The conductor celebrates his third decade with the Boston Pops exactly as you'd expect—by throwing a yearlong bash that kicks off this month

Favorite song in the Great American Songbook?Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are.” “Lush Life” would be another
but it’s a downer.Anyone you would never work with again
and we tend to have bigger names of the moment than we have at any other time
Their motivation for being there may not be quite the same as some people who are a bit more thoughtful about why they want to work with an orchestra
you really get to see what people are like
but there are artists who come in and are just delightful
They do exactly what they’re supposed to do
And then you get people who treat everyone badly
because they’re inclined to be polite to me
But the runners and the people making sure they have towels in their dressing room
I would punch them. How physically demanding is conducting?More than it was 25 years ago
I used to get away without doing a whole lot of exercise because I figured 30 hours on the podium per week made up for it
and the lower back is becoming a bit of a problem
And the worst thing is that I can’t sleep on my left or right side because it starts to hurt
because I snore.Do you ever get stage fright? Not as a conductor
but one reason I knew I wasn’t cut out to be a concert pianist was that I had stage fright to the level of panic
I remember getting ready for my senior recital
I used to think if I got through a recital
But when I started doing more than dabbling at conducting
I realized it was something that I could do
that I felt very comfortable in the milieu
that I was a better coach than I was a player.Do you have any superstitions
Anything you reflexively do before going onstage?Seiji Ozawa used to touch the door frame
Mine are more like routines than superstitions
I used to have a couple that were more overt
like a stone in my pocket that meant something to me
But the problem with things like that is that you’re fine until the day you forget the stone.Your greatest achievement?Besides my kids
and the way that people recognize me as being an elemental part of the arts community in Boston
what I’ve been doing for the past 18 years with the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival
creating an extraordinary and unique place for kids to learn about music
So it’s nice to know that something you had an elemental part in making may be useful for people 50 years from now.BSO Archives / Photo via BSO Archives

Cynthia Erivo to headline Opening Night concert on May 8
The Boston Pops will once again turn to the music and stars of Broadway when the orchestra opens its 139th spring season at Symphony Hall on May 8 with Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winner Cynthia Erivo (“The Color Purple”) as special guest
An Academy Award-nominee for Best Actress for 2024’s “Wicked,” British actress and singer Erivo is having a very big year, a fact not lost on Keith Lockhart
celebrating his 30th year as conductor of the Boston Pops
“It may look like we’re hitching our wagon to a star
but we’ve actually been trying to get her for years and the deal was finally made before ‘Wicked’ was released,” explained Lockhart by telephone recently from his home in Brookline
And with the huge success of ‘Wicked,” she has become a mega star
I’m really excited that she’ll be making her debut with us on ‘Opening Night at Pops.’”
Lockhart’s enthusiasm for Broadway began during his childhood in Poughkeepsie
“I’ve been a musical theater junkie since I was a little kid,” he acknowledges
“The Broadway repertoire is one of the goldmines of American music and Broadway performers are great for us.”
Indeed, the conductor – a classmate of Tony Award-winner Billy Porter (“Kinky Boots”) at Carnegie Mellon University – says one particular Broadway-themed Pops program has left an especially lasting impression on him
“Orville Peck is a very interesting talent
He’s an award-winning South African country musician – a singer and instrumentalist
And his activism as a gay man has made him a hero to the LGBTQ community,” says Lockhart
as the emcee in the amazing revival of ‘Cabaret.’ We’re really looking forward to welcoming him to the stage of Symphony Hall.”
Video tributes and archival film will also be shown during the concert
The season closes with the 31st annual “Gospel Night” on June 7
When it comes to the subject of his 30th anniversary in Boston, Lockhart is humble even though he is the second longest-serving conductor, after the iconic Arthur Fiedler
and has conducted 2,250 concerts featuring more than 300 guest artists from the worlds of classical
I first found out that I had been chosen for this position just before the holidays in 1994 when they called my manager to make the deal,” recalls Lockhart
I had a months-long tour with the Cincinnati Symphony
two weeks before the formal announcement was made
they had me sequestered at a hotel in Waltham before I had to face the press
It was a very exciting time for a kid from Poughkeepsie.”
Both Marvin Hamlisch and Quincy Jones were also finalists for a post that involved toiling in the shadow of two towering figures, Fiedler and legendary film composer John Williams
after 50 years as conductor of the Pops and before that as a violinist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra
“When you follow people like Arthur and John
you just have to put the blinders on and move forward.”
With Williams staying on as Pops’ laureate conductor
Lockhart has forged a lasting relationship with the 26-time Grammy
and three-time Emmy winner that dates to their first meeting
“I had dinner with John the night before my appointment was formally announced
so we’d never actually met before,” says Lockhart
“He told straight away to respect the tradition of the orchestra and be the best steward possible and he said
‘Don’t try to change everything all at once
Don’t try to make to make it your organization right out of the gate
It’s been around longer than either of us and it will be around after we’re gone.’”
whose current contract has been extended to 2027
is clear that his role with the Pops will one day come to a close
do I want to be doing this job when I’m 95-years old
but I can promise that I won’t still be doing it in 30 more years
I have other things to look forward to – like going to a barbecue on the Fourth of July,” he says with a laugh

a former Post-Dispatch editor and longtime local journalist
Those who knew her recalled Lockhart as a rigorous wordsmith
a strong advocate for Black journalists and a passionate storyteller
“She was an absolute force,” said her daughter
“She was always working so hard to make wherever she was better.”
Louis as the eldest daughter of Cornelious and Laura Lockhart
She spent her early years living in the Lewis Place and Kingsway East neighborhoods on the city’s north side and attended Lutheran grade schools from kindergarten through eighth grade
most of her friends went to Lutheran High School North
so she went to the nearly all-white Lutheran High School South in south St
Decades later, she could still recall her first day: She got on the bus not knowing anyone and within minutes had met her new best friend. She became the school’s first Black graduate in 1970 and enrolled at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s School of Journalism on a full scholarship the Post-Dispatch offered outstanding Black students
“He was the white guy at the Black paper,” Lockhart later recalled in an interview with a Lutheran High alumni publication. “I was the Black girl at the white paper.”
They married in 1982, shortly after Lockhart began a 17-year tour of the upper Midwest: She worked at the Milwaukee Journal, the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota, and the Wisconsin State Journal and the Capital Times in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 1998, the Post-Dispatch called her home. She spent the next decade as a Metro section editor, editorial writer and an editor on the paper’s national and international news desk.
Margaret Freivogel, a former Post-Dispatch editor and Washington correspondent, recalled Lockhart as a talented colleague, unafraid to push those around her to dig deeper and better understand the communities they covered. She also remembered the line editing.
“You didn’t get away with any sloppiness with Linda,” Freivogel said.
Lockhart took early retirement in 2007 after Lee Enterprises bought the paper and the industry began a long retrenchment. But when a group of fellow former Post-Dispatch staffers started a new online publication, the St. Louis Beacon, Freivogel successfully begged Lockhart to join them.
“I knew she would be a tremendous asset,” she said.
Lockhart retired in 2019, then came back to edit the St. Louis American for three months during the pandemic before retiring again.
But she was still around and willing to offer advice to those who asked for it.
“Get to know people,” she told the Lutheran South alumni publication in 2021. “Build friendships, and don’t get hung up on what makes people different but rather what makes them the same.”
A funeral will be held Saturday at a location to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, Lockhart asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

In a piece of official USC news that feels like it has long since been the case, Brandon Lockhart has shut down his recruitment. The class of 2026 cornerback has been committed to the Trojan program for about a year and a half now, and Saturday was the day for him to join the wave of the ongoing positive recruiting news.
The current Loyola High School junior is constantly making public pitches to other potential recruits and hyping up Trojan announcements as they come
There are other commits like Esun Tafa who are doing everything in their power to bring the best talent to the Cardinal and Gold
Lockhart is certainly among the top engagers with others in that regard
Currently rated as a four-star corner, Steezo, who is a media contributor for Rivals, announced that Lockhart would be shutting down his recruitment, as posted on X
Considering the aforementioned run of encouraging Trojan news for the future
this should be celebrated by fans just as much as the rest of the announcements
He is a talented secondary player. Other schools like Georgia
and Texas A&M wanted Lockhart to join their team in 2026
he chose coach Lincoln Riley and the current Trojan staff
In terms of creating a genuine bond with his future teammates and coaches
the CB is already fostering a true USC brotherhood
Lockhart is someone who does run the routes for the receivers that he is covering
And despite what can be the reputation of the position
he has good hands and is able to make contested interceptions through contact and in traffic
he does a good job of balancing playing smart and going full force downhill to make the tackle
People like coach Riley and GM Chad Bowden, of course, deserve praise for the shift that has occurred at USC over the last few months. The snowball effect has been greatly enhanced by terrific talents such as Lockhart
further helping to push the momentum along

Fake daycare's illegal COVID cash pays for Disney trip
(CBS12) — A man has been arrested after allegedly misusing a Paycheck Protection Program loan intended for a nonexistent daycare center to fund a lavish Disney vacation and dining splurges
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) said that Adrian Lockhart received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan in April of 2021 for his alleged daycare center named "Playhouse."
Lockhart's bank records showed that he was receiving weekly paychecks for working with a lawn service business
officials said that there were no records of any daycare supplies being purchased with his account
and records showed that Lockhart never had a business with the name "Playhouse."
In a deeper dive into Lockhart's bank accounts
PBSO uncovered that he used the PPP loan to allegedly fund a Disney vacation in Orlando and eating out
and the funds were depleted by September 20
Lockhart allegedly admitted to never owning a daycare center

DENHAM SPRINGS - A 13-year-old from Denham Springs died early Sunday morning after he was hit while bicycling along Lockhart Road.
State Police said teenager Matthew Temple was riding his Huffy bicycle down Lockhart near Magnolia Boulevard just before 1:30 a.m
when a Dodge Dart hit the bike from behind.
Temple was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries

HalleyAnna Finlay spent months last year campaigning for the Lockhart Freedom Act
a referendum to decriminalize possessing 4 ounces or less of marijuana
the social justice organization behind the ballot measure
sent thousands of texts and knocked on hundreds of doors to encourage people to vote
it seemed like it was all worth it when 68% of Lockhart residents voted in favor of decriminalizing marijuana
“The City Council just decided they weren’t going to go with it with no real explanation,” she said
the Lockhart City Council voted in a closed session to not codify the Lockhart Freedom Act into the city's constitution
arguing it conflicts with state and federal law
Finlay and dozens of other campaigners and community members brought boxes of fresh pizza to Lockhart City Council’s meeting on Thursday
“Our free meal aims to creatively remind local officials of the overwhelming popularity of the referendum among Lockhart voters
which a few of these council members are daring to undemocratically disregard
despite the clear election results,” Sam Benavides
managing editor of the Caldwell/Hays Examiner and protest organizer said
Lockhart City Attorney Brad Bullock said the referendum is too much of a legal question mark to codify into city law and puts the city at risk of a lawsuit
that’s not a position that officers want to be in
It’s not a position this council wants to be in … but that’s the reality,” Bullock said
Attorney General Ken Paxton filed lawsuits against Austin
San Marcos and three other Texas cities early last year for passing similar decriminalization measures
“My job as the city attorney is to try to keep my client
“I don’t want them to get sued if we can avoid it by the proponents of the charter amendment
and I don’t want them to get sued by the state of Texas because that’s a cost that you the taxpayers have to bear.”
Finlay said she wants Lockhart to be on the “fightin' side” of the issue
The lawsuits in Austin and San Marcos were both dismissed last summer
and residents in support of the Lockhart referendum say it’s up to a court to decide its legality
Lockhart Police Chief Gary Williamson said the decriminalization amendment poses another issue for him: it would axe the police’s ability to use marijuana as a “tool” to investigate other crimes
“Often during a traffic stop we’ll use the odor of marijuana as probable cause for searching a vehicle,” Williamson said at Thursday’s meeting
Lockhart resident Dorothy Jennings said using marijuana as grounds for suspicion has led to vast inequality in the city
said she was arrested in Lockhart for possessing marijuana after a traffic stop in the early 2000s and was subsequently put on probation
A friend of hers who was not Black faced a similar situation and only got a ticket
Jennings said it's difficult to get people to first register to vote and then follow through at the polls
and what's happening now will likely further discourage people
"With them winning this and then [City Council] overturning — it just shows that their vote does not count," she said
This isn’t the first time Lockhart City Council has tried to fiddle with the Lockhart Freedom Act
After the proposition got enough signatures to appear on the ballot last fall
the City Council tried to break it up into 13 separate measures that would have taken up a page on the ballot
Voters on both sides of the issue showed up in defense of one concise measure to vote on
Lockhart City Council Member John Lairsen said the dais should take another vote on the issue at their next meeting
“I’ve heard so many times that our credibility and transparency are being questioned
I don’t think any of us wants that,” Lairsen said
“I think we owe it to our citizens to present this in front of them.”

KYLE, Texas — A man wanted in connection with a shooting in Lockhart was arrested in Kyle Thursday evening following a multi-agency pursuit

When officers tried to pull Hall over, he fled, lost control of his vehicle, and ran into a wooded area near the 1400 block of Bunton Creek Road. Law enforcement from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Buda Police Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety assisted in the search. Hall was eventually found barricaded inside a building, where he surrendered without incident.
In addition to the existing warrants, Hall now faces charges from the Kyle Police Department, including evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest on foot, possession of marijuana, interference with public duties, accident involving damage, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Lockhart Police, Kyle Police Department, Buda Police Department, Hays County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Department of Public Safety were involved in the investigation.
Gateway’s Austin Lockhart is a senior on the 2025 track and field team.
It wasn’t his best distance of the season. That was a 44-5 at a regular-season invitational.
But his top jump in his WPIAL debut earned him a spot on the medals podium in fifth place and also provided a great deal of momentum heading into the offseason to be best prepared for his final outdoor season this spring.
“WPIALs was a lot of fun,” said Lockhart, now a senior.
“It was a great atmosphere to compete. Overall, there was some pressure, but I like those tense kind of situations. They push me to jump better. I am looking forward to doing even better there this year and qualify for states.”
So far, so good for Lockhart who recorded a season-best 44-¼ in winning the triple jump at last Wednesday’s section dual meet with Franklin Regional. That top distance was an improvement on a 42-7.5 which placed him third at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association meet three days earlier.
Lockhart at WPIALs last year missed an automatic trip to states (top four) by three inches.
“Over the summer, it was mainly lifting and getting stronger,” Lockhart said.
“I didn’t do any specific jump workouts or anything like that. Moving into the fall, I was doing more plyometrics and jump-centered work. Getting to WPIALs and getting so close to states, I wanted to do whatever I could to prepare to get back (to WPIALs) and take that next step.”
Lockhart said he also was able to improve through the indoor season which provided him the chance to see the summer and fall training was paying off.
“Because I hadn’t been on the runway and doing jumps between the end of the outdoor season and the start of the indoor season, to come back and do almost as good as I had done when I ended the (2024) outdoor season, it really boosted my confidence,” Lockhart said.
The Tri-State meet was the first invitational opportunity this spring for Lockhart and the other Gateway athletes.
In addition to his third-place finish in the triple jump, he landed a 19-9 in the long jump to finish 20th and was a part of the third-place 100-meter relay with Aaron Staley, Isaiah Kelley and Jayden Stammer (43.57).
“I’ll be honest with you, it was cold,” Lockhart said of the jumping and running conditions at the Tri-State meet where temperatures struggled to make it into the 40s.
“Besides that, it was a good meet for me. My (jumping phases) felt pretty good, for the triple, at least. It helped me see that there was work still to be done, and I was able to hit 44 (against Franklin Regional).”
Lockhart said he’s excited to go after the triple jump school record. Eric Jones owns the all-time mark of 45-11¼ set in 2006.
“Hopefully, I am able to get over 46,” he said. “I would like to get 47 or better, but I think that is a stretch.”
Hitting 46 feet was a goal Lockhart hoped to reach as he competed last Thursday at the annual Butler Invitational. The meet was to conclude past the deadline for this week’s edition.
He also hoped to soar past 20 feet in the long jump.
Lockhart also hopes for good things at Saturday’s South Fayette Invitational and also at the prestigious Baldwin Invitational on May 2.
Then the focus turns to preparation for the WPIAL championships May 14 at Slippery Rock. The top four place finishers in each Class 3A event at WPIALs earn an automatic trip to states May 23-24 at Shippensburg.
“Right now, my goal is to go top three (in the triple jump),” Lockhart said.
“A WPIAL title would be amazing, though. I am looking forward to seeing what happens there.”
Gateway assistant coach for the jumps, Bill McCord, said Lockhart is on pace to meet his triple jump goals.
“His goal is to break the record,” McCord said. “He’s stronger this year. A big thing for him is his self-esteem knowing that he can keep getting better and jump further to go after that record. That gives him a lot of motivation and energy. He takes instruction so well to where even a slight change can make a difference.”
Lockhart said good things also are in the offing for the current 400 relay lineup which bettered its Tri-State time with a winning and season-best 43.4 against Franklin Regional.
“Overall, the relay is looking good. Everyone is running really well,” Lockhart said.
“The handoff between me and Jayden needed some work, but we were able to get that down and taken care of. Kelley, Staley and I were on a relay last year, and we had that chemistry. Bringing in Stammer added so much to what this relay can do.”
The relay, Lockhart said, hopes to be in top form heading to WPIALs with a goal of going under 43 to somewhere around mid 42 at some point before the end of the season.

IN - The Toledo Mud Hens fell 6-2 to the Indianapolis Indians Saturday night after the Indians broke the game open in the sixth inning
The Hens held their ground in an early-game pitching duel
but things fell apart after Lael Lockhart left the mound
Saturday night’s game opened as a defensive standstill between Lockhart and the No
Chandler has been an issue for opposing teams this season
allowing just two runs through three starts
Jehmai Jones would have the privilege of adding to Chandler’s run tally with an RBI single in the fourth inning
after Hao-Yu Lee stole his third base of the season
Matt Gorski wasted no time in deleting the Toledo lead with his second home run of the season
This would be just the third home run to go against Lockhart this season
Lockhart’s day would come to an end following the fifth inning with things still knotted 1-1
Ricky Vanasco would take over on the mound
but the Indians were more than prepared for him
Vanasco allowed his first two batters to walk
before a Gorski RBI double gave Indianapolis a 2-1 lead
Liver Peguero then hit a double of his own
He wouldn’t be left stranded either as Eli Wilson brought him in with a double of his own
All three doubles came off of Vanasco’s curveball
showing the Indians clearly knew what they would see from him
were much more efficient during his inning of action
but Colin Holderman and Hunter Stratton pitched back-to-back hitless innings
Things then turned even more bleak for Toledo when Gorski hit his second home run of the game
This one just cleared the left-field wall and would go down as the lone run allowed by Tyler Owens
The Hens looked to make some magic happen against Jarod Bayless in the top of the ninth
A Riley Unroe base hit and a Lee hit-by-pitch brought Ben Gamel to the plate
Jones would draw a walk to load the bases with no outs
earning three-straight strikeouts to close out the Indianapolis victory
The Mud Hens and the Indians will play their series finale Easter Sunday at 1:35 p.m

Texas — The Lockhart High School football team is featured in a new commercial calling for a timeout against hate
Lockhart’s Todd Moebes pops up to call a "timeout"
I saw your dad in a commercial," said Todd's son and Lockhart quarterback Kadon Moebes
along with some of the biggest names in sports
"We need to understand that we’re all different
We need to accept other people," said Todd Moebes
This commercial debuted during last Thursday's NFL game
it is also on various digital platforms and billboards
"I was surprised how much it was on television
it’s everywhere," said Lockhart wide receiver
The Foundation to Combat Antisemitism founded by New England Patriots owner
led this campaign and partnered up with multiple commissioners of sports leagues including the NFL
The campaign will run through the end of the year
The Lockhart and Bastrop residents who fought for marijuana decriminalization celebrated a resounding victory when the measures passed with roughly 70% support in November
the election results put them in a Catch-22
Adopting the marijuana decriminalization charter amendment would almost guarantee them a legal battle with Attorney General Ken Paxton
rejecting the will of the voters is also illegal
Lockhart and Bastrop city councils chose the second route
The amendment asks local law enforcement to decriminalize the possession of four ounces or less of marijuana
local law enforcement would be allowed to take it away
but would not be allowed to arrest them for the offense or issue a citation
Lockhart City Attorney Brad Bullock said that policy conflicts with a 1997 state law that prohibits cities from adopting policies that do not fully enforce drug laws
Paxton has filed six lawsuits against a slew of Texas cities who passed similar marijuana decriminalization measures under the same logic
But not everyone agrees these measures conflict with state law
who dismissed Paxton’s lawsuit against Austin last summer
argued that the marijuana decriminalization policy did not mandate police to stop enforcing drug laws
it tells police to prioritize more serious offenses
A judge also dismissed the lawsuit in San Marcos
Paxton is in the midst of appealing those decisions
the charter amendment might be less about legalities and more about money
A lawsuit from the state could saddle the cities with hundreds and thousands of dollars in legal fees
how much would that cost the City of Bastrop
Does that affect our grant funding for the police department
These are things that as a smaller agency we depend on,” Bastrop Police Chief Vicky Steffanic told KUT in October
in avoiding a costly litigation with the state
Lockhart and Bastrop may be violating the law they’re trying to bypass
“To refuse to follow what they know to be the law
illegal and rips at the fabric of our democracy and our republic,” Hays said
Hays said failing to respect the outcome of the election could put the cities at risk of a lawsuit from community members or advocacy groups
she said it appears the city is hedging its bets that the state government has more resources behind it than an advocacy group
and litigation with the state would be more costly
Lockhart resident Taylor Burge said the city’s response to the charter amendment could cause confusion within the community about where the local laws around marijuana decriminalization stand
“The whole bottom line of passing this charter amendment was to help alleviate the fears surrounding marijuana and the police,” she said
Burge said waiting for litigation in other cities to guide how Lockhart officials should move forward could leave residents in limbo for years
“City council is supposed to be speaking on the people’s behalf
They are meant to advocate for the general person
[I feel like they’re] speaking up for the 32%,” she said
“How are the people of Texan supposed to make our voices heard?”
