In a neighborhood known for its standout Mexican establishments, La Licor Panamericana goes beyond Mexican flavors to embrace the vast culinary traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean
The thoughtful menu and bar program showcases iconic dishes and national beverages from places that rarely get their due
Patrons are invited on a journey through destinations from Argentina
and El Salvador to Cuba and the Dominican Republic
Inspired by the wanderlust of owners Abraham Ramírez and Javier Arroyo — young restaurateurs with hospitality chops and passports thick with stamps — La Licor opened its doors last fall in Logan Square
The restaurant is a nod to the iconic Pan-American Highway
a route that stretches from Alaska to Argentina tying together distant places through shared heritage and traditions
the kind of handmade baskets that are often found at outdoor markets
are arranged in a display that serves as the room’s visual focal point
As guests move toward the intimate dining room in the back
handmade artifacts and textiles from different parts of Latin America decorate ceilings and walls
These details are like souvenirs from a road trip begging diners to pause
Chef Juan Jiménez — whose background includes stints at Sky
His dishes reflect the rich mosaic of Latin American cuisine rooted in Indigenous and European traditions
shaped over time by the contributions of Asian and African diasporas
Designed to share, the menu’s selection of starters includes pão de queijo
chewy cheese bread that’s a staple in Brazil
served with a tangy pickled cabbage relish and tomato sauce
The menu also features chuzos — grilled meat skewers brightened with cilantro
East Coast oysters seasoned with michelada seasoning for a bold
and a surprising jícama salad dressed with yuzu vinaigrette and finished with radishes and sesame seeds
Honduras steps into the spotlight with pollo chuco
a raw fluke dish similar to ceviche but prepared without prior marination
alongside dishes highlighting the flavors of Colombia
Jiménez believes there are shared threads that connect all these cuisines
The main dishes include a grilled pescado zarandeado
seasoned with a red adobo sauce traditional to Mexico’s western coast
a tribute to Mexico City’s street food culture
semi-cured sausage called chistorra and is served on a buttery brioche bun
There’s a lemon mousse spiked with cachaça
a traditional corn-based treat with a texture somewhere between flan and jelly
which has been quietly appearing on menus across the city
pairing it with chocolate ice cream and a delicate corn foam
The bar at La Licor mirrors the Pan-Latin philosophy
offering a selection of spirits that goes deep into the region’s heritage
guests can sample Bolivia’s national brandy
which share a name but differ in grape varietals used
and aging processes; Brazil’s sugarcane rum-like cachaça; and the Dominican mamajuana
The lineup also features intriguing ingredients like papaya
The cocktail menu reimagines classics with a refined
This standout blends 2012 vintage barrel-aged chocolate pu-erh tea and bourbon
velvety texture through a fat-wash technique that creates layers of complexity
The Alba Martini combines the same pu-erh with cold brew and rum
Form is as important as content at La Licor
listed among the restaurant’s Latin American Classics
is adorned with the colors of the Peruvian flag
a playful sangria served in penguin-shaped pitchers often found in Argentina
a nostalgic reference to the flightless birds that visit the country’s coasts
A curated selection of Pan-American beers highlights unique brews from across the region and plans are underway to expand the offerings to include Latin American wines
nonalcoholic offerings receive equal attention
The list includes takes on classics like the Zeroni
There’s also the fruity and frothy I See Red
a nonalcoholic twist on an Aperol spritz made with soursop
with the option to add CBD or THC for an extra twist
La Licor aims to be more than just a destination for food and drinks
offering events that celebrate the traditions
the team hosted a Hanal Pixán night for the Day of the Dead
a celebration unique to a few states in southeastern Mexico
A mixology competition is currently bringing the space to life
providing a platform for creativity and community connection
and a menu that transcends typical bar fare
La Licor offers a journey of discovery through food and drink — one that might just inspire your own wanderlust
