Evans ‘deserved better fate’ in tough loss to RangersPlus
Kirby K's 4 in first Minor League rehab startMay 4th
ARLINGTON -- Logan Evans isn’t too worried about what the stat line suggests from his second start in the Majors
It looks forgettable, as he was charged with six runs on 11 hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings in the Mariners’ 8-1 loss to the Rangers on Sunday afternoon
Evans didn’t give up much hard contact all day
many of which simply found the right holes at the right time in what became a six-run third inning for the Rangers
Evans’ other four innings of work were scoreless frames
I feel like I could’ve executed a little better with those walks
Evans, the Mariners’ No. 10 prospect who joined the rotation when Logan Gilbert landed on the injured list last month
navigated around traffic the first two innings
Evans issued a one-out walk to Rangers nine-hole hitter Blaine Crim
followed by Josh Smith reaching on a popup that landed safely in shallow left
third baseman Ben Williamson couldn’t make a play on a sharply hit grounder by Wyatt Langford that loaded the bases
Corey Seager drove in two runs with a single to right
After Evans got Joc Pederson to line out for the second out
the Rangers scored four more on RBI singles by Marcus Semien
Evans walked Jonah Heim during that stretch
Part of the growth of a young pitcher is figuring out how to minimize damage in innings such as the third
manager Dan Wilson felt like Evans made the pitches that could have done just that
but just luck wasn’t on his side that inning.”
He threw two scoreless innings after the six-run third
as the Mariners’ starters have now gone at least five innings in 26 of 33 games
“The way he bounced back from that inning was really good,” Wilson said
“I thought that was a big learning moment for him and a confidence booster.”
The six runs are the most runs Evans has allowed since joining the professional ranks as a 12th-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft
Evans has had a couple of Minor League starts in which he gave up five runs
including earlier this season on April 3 when he was pitching for Triple-A Tacoma against Reno
But Evans hasn’t endured this type of outing since his college days at the University of PIttsburgh in 2023
even looking at his college stats shows a pitcher who was able to recover nicely after subpar performances
Evans plans to keep that trend going in the Majors
and not let an outing like Sunday’s linger
There were definitely some things that I felt like I could’ve executed a little bit better
Latest on KirbyRight-hander George Kirby (right shoulder inflammation) is officially back on the road to the big leagues
making his first rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday
Kirby allowed one run on a solo home run with four strikeouts over a 42-pitch
went 14-11 with a 3.53 ERA in 33 starts last season
Wilson addressed Kirby beginning his rehab assignment this weekend
saying: “He’s just continuing his progression and we’ll obviously see how those starts start to go.”
Texas — The results weren’t what Logan Evans wanted in his first major-league start on the road
an 8-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday afternoon
the 23-year-old said he’ll take away some encouragement from his second big-league start
Regardless of the outcome — good or bad — he said he has to maintain a positive mindset
There were definitely some things that I felt like I could execute a little bit better
But just keep with my Plan A and keep going and attack.”
Evans’ pitching line wasn’t pretty — he was tagged for six runs
on 11 hits (all singles) — as the Rangers ended the Mariners’ six-game winning streak
Manager Dan Wilson suggested Evans was pretty unlucky
“I thought Logan pitched a really good ball game today,” Wilson said
Throwing the “kitchen sink,” as he calls his vast arsenal
and Wilson said he liked the pitch-selection mix
And with rotation stalwarts Logan Gilbert (right elbow flexor strain) and George Kirby (shoulder inflammation) still on the injured list
Evans does not sound in jeopardy of giving up his rotation spot in the short term
Wilson said he appreciated that Evans was able to gather himself after that ugly third inning and get through five innings (on 92 pitches)
providing some relief for the Mariners bullpen
“That’s a big learning moment for him
The Mariners had taken a 1-0 lead off Jacob deGrom in the third inning
singled to center field and stole second; J.P
Crawford followed with an infield single to move Rivas to third; and Jorge Polanco’s groundout brought in the game’s first run
Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with two outs
but Randy Arozarena hit into a fielder’s choice to end the threat
The Mariners (20-13) had won the first five games of the season against the Rangers (17-18)
including the first two games of this series
and they’ll head to Sacramento for their first road series in the Athletics’ new park to begin a three-game series Monday
Josh Jung led off the third with a hard-hit lineout to Arozarena in left field
eight of the next nine Texas batters reached base
starting with Evans’ five-pitch walk to the No
Josh Smith followed with a blooper into shallow left field — just between shortstop J.P
Crawford and Arozarena — and the next batter
was credited with an infield single on a bouncing ground ball that ate up rookie third baseman Ben Williamson
Corey Seager hit a sharp single to drive in two runs and give the Rangers their first lead of the series
“They were able to find some holes,” Wilson said
“And sometimes that’s the way the game goes
he threw the ball well; he made some good pitches
But luck wasn’t on his side in that inning.”
Crawford snared a line drive off the bat of Joc Pederson for the second out
but Marcus Semien followed with a first-pitch single to drive in another run
Evans walked Jonah Heim to load the bases again
and Adolis Garcia’s sharp groundball single up the middle drove in two more to make it 5-1
Jung’s soft single made it 6-1 before Evans struck out Crim to finally end the third inning
“Sometimes it falls my way; sometimes it falls theirs
I feel like I could have executed a little bit better with those walks

A pair of dwelling fires over the weekend left one person dead
several without a home and multiple firefighters injured
firefighters were called to a dwelling fire at 105 E
where it was reported there was entrapment
City firefighters arrived on scene about 10:30 p.m
to find three people hanging out of an attic window and a fourth person trapped on the second floor
Firefighters were able to rescue the three on the third floor
adding that those three were flown to “other hospitals for treatment.”
the Blair County Coroner’s Office reported
An autopsy will be conducted early this week to determine the cause of death for 64-year-old Sandra Howard
“There was heavy fire in the rear of the second floor when we arrived,” Free said in describing the conditions of the late night blaze that was called in by a passerby
“Five firefighters were transported to UPMC (Saturday) night,” with three of those transported to UPMC Pittsburgh for additional treatment
All have since been released and are expected to make a complete recovery
two for smoke inhalation and a fourth for dehydration
The fifth firefighter suffered a concussion when part of the ceiling fell on his head
The fire started on the second floor and is under investigation by the state fire marshal as well as the Altoona Fire Department and Altoona Police
Free estimated the damage at $35,000 to $40,000 and said there was insurance on the single-family home
The Red Cross was called to assist the family and the Salvation Army supplied hydration for the firefighters
Logan Township United Fire was also available to assist
a dwelling fire in Logan Township left one man without his home
but thanks to some “divine” timing
Fire crews responded to 3002 Gwin Road about 1:30 p.m
where Logan Township United Fire Department Chief Rusty Shoenfelt said the fire seemingly began on the right side of the house and moved inward
The wind caused the flames to brush up against the neighboring house
resulting in some exterior heat damage to that home
According to the elderly occupant’s cousin
he regularly passes by the house to make sure his cousin is doing all right as he is not currently in the best health
While he was making his trip over on this occasion
he noticed the beginnings of the blaze and acted quickly to save his cousin
The homeowner does not have much use of his legs
and he typically uses a motorized scooter to get around
His cousin said he had to kick open the door to the house because it was stuck and quickly found his cousin in his chair
The smoke inside the house made it difficult to see – or breathe – so the cousin could only make it part of the way to the door while carrying the homeowner before running out of breath
That’s when a pair of Penn State Altoona students stepped in to help
The cousin said the two students entered the house after crossing the street from campus and rescued the two men from the house as the fire continued to build
It was “divine intervention” on all accounts
from his arrival at the house in time to pull his cousin out of the fire to the college students entering to save them both
They all escaped unscathed and the homeowner did not require any medical care
There was no official assessment of the property damage
but there was severe damage to the home and two vehicles
Shoenfelt said he indicated he wasn’t notified of the blaze by any fire alarms
Shoenfelt said it’s important for residents to check their detectors monthly and swap them out every 10 years
adding that preventative fire safety is crucial to give everyone the best chance of making it out alive in the event of a blaze
“We encourage people to ensure they have working smoke detectors,” he said
The homeowner will be staying with relatives and did not require any housing arrangements
The residents of the neighboring house were out of town at the time of the fire
Logan Township United was joined on scene by Pinecroft Volunteer Fire Company
Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company and Newburg Volunteer Fire Department
Excelsior Fire Department also arrived on scene to offer their Rapid Intervention Team
according to the International Association of Fire Chiefs
acts as a standby search and rescue team in the event of a firefighter getting injured or going missing
Shoenfelt said about 50 firefighters in total were on hand to combat the blaze
adding that there were no injuries reported
AMED offered medical assistance and officers with the Altoona and Logan Township police departments were present as well
Shoenfelt said the state police fire marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire

As a WWE superstar who also defeated Dillon Danis in a pro boxing bout, Paul is constantly making noise and exploring different career paths
has proven to be a huge success for the social media star
is with FC Barcelona which is the former home of the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner
After he accused the soccer star of copying PRIME with his own drink, MAS, Paul was called out by Messi’s bodyguard but he’s now attracted the attention of a staple of the UFC’s welterweight division
As a fellow Argentine, Santiago Ponzinibbio didn’t hesitate to come to the defense of one of his nation’s sporting heroes
The brief comments that were exchanged between Logan Paul and Lionel Messi’s bodyguard didn’t lead anywhere but that didn’t stop from the 19-fight UFC veteran from making it clear that if the WWE superstar wants to get anywhere near the Inter Miami FC player
Ponzinibbio spoke in a recent interview with MMA Fighting where he gave his reaction to the beef and stated that he would be one of many names who would be ready to defend Messi in such a scenario
It all started because Logan Paul talked about Messi
“This guy went after Messi saying he wants a boxing match
but he’ll have to beat a lot of people before he gets to Messi — and I’ll be one of them
Having spent 17 years playing for Barcelona’s first team before joining Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons
Messi moved to America in 2023 where he was named the MLS’ Most Valuable Player at the end of the 2024 season
who is one year older than the sporting icon at 38
said that the decorated forward is an inspiration to many people which would only make Paul’s task even harder if he truly wants to fight the Argentina captain
It’s incredible how many years playing at the highest level and doesn’t lose focus
So [Paul] definitely has to beat a lot of people before he gets to our beloved ‘Pulga’
Santiago Ponzinibbio backs football star Lionel Messi in Logan Paul beef:"Messi doesn’t even know who Logan Paul is, brother. … He'll have to beat a lot of people before he gets to Messi — and I’ll be one of them."(🎥 @guicruzzz) pic.twitter.com/BJY49RIiKs
Santiago Ponzinibbio is set to return to the Octagon at UFC Des Moines on May 3 where he faces Daniel Rodriguez with the hope of recording back-to-back wins for the first time since 2018
the entertaining welterweight has struggled to recapture the form that previously made him one of the most exciting contenders in the world at 170-pounds
Before he was forced to take significant time off due to injuries, Ponzinibbio put together a 7-fight win streak that included wins over the likes of Neil Magny, Mike Perry and Conor McGregor’s teammate
After being just one fight away from a title shot
he has gone 3-5 after stepping back inside the Octagon in January of 2021 to try and pick up from where he left off

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas baseball's list of players out with injuries could be shrinking this coming weekend against LSU
Head coach Dave Van Horn hosted his monthly Swatters Club lunch Monday at the Fayetteville Public Library and reserved a few minutes of his discussion with the fans in attendance to address his team's health
Here's a look at Van Horn's updates on five players prior to the No. 2 Razorbacks' (40-9
The TCU transfer has dealt with a lingering hamstring issue all season and tweaked it on a failed pickoff attempt in Arkansas' 6-4 loss to Florida on April 25
"It's pins and needles with him whenever he's running," Van Horn said

Maxwell didn't play in the final two games against the Gators or the more-recent sweep over No
Van Horn said Monday that Maxwell 'might be available' to face LSU
Carson Boles was Maxwell's replacement against the Longhorns and is hitting .321 with 17 runs and 16 RBIs
He hit a two-run homer Thursday night to open the scoring in a 9-0 victory over Texas
Coil hasn't pitched since March 23 with a back injury
The original target for a return was the final series of the regular season against Tennessee
but Van Horn indicated the timeline has moved in favor of the Razorbacks
and he'll be ready to go," Van Horn said of Coil's availability against LSU
Two MRIs on Wiggins' right elbow did not reveal a tear
to which Van Horn said 'thank goodness' at the Swatters Club
we probably wouldn't have had him next year
which means he probably wouldn't pitch here much
Arkansas doesn't expect the freshman to be available for the remainder of the season
Van Horn said there's a chance Wiggins returns if Arkansas is playing into late June at the College World Series
three saves and 20 strikeouts in 14 innings
Van Horn announced Souza will undergo surgery on his torn right shoulder next week
The sophomore sustained the injury sliding into third base in the Razorbacks 13-3 win over Georgia on April 11
Souza posted a .250 batting average with four homer
The freshman was the initial replacement for Souza at second base
but Fraser is now dealing with a back injury that bothered him in high school
Van Horn said Fraser will undergo two tests Monday and will likely miss a week or two
Fraser has a .255 batting average with 12 RBIs
Arkansas moved Cam Kozeal to second base and played Reese Robinett at first this weekend against Texas
The move paid off as Robinett hit two home runs in a 13-8 win Saturday that clinched the sweep

A Telford man was driving recklessly and at more than twice the speed limit on a winding road last month when he caused a crash that ejected a 15-year-old who was riding in the passenger seat of his car
fled the scene of the accident without calling police and asked a female friend to pick him up shortly after he flipped his Kia Sorrento onto its roof
according to the affidavit of probable cause for his arrest
Freed told the girl that “he thought his friend may be dead,” the affidavit said
Freed has been charged with homicide by vehicle
awaiting a preliminary hearing on those charges
State police were dispatched to Whites Mill Road in Salford Township
on April 24 by the 911 Connect service in Freed’s Kia
The system automatically notifies emergency responders when a vehicle’s air bags are deployed
dispatchers heard a voice asking where the Kia was and a person within the vehicle saying he was OK
they found the Kia upside down in a ditch next to the road
Freed’s father arrived at the scene and said that the car belonged to his wife
that only she and their son usually drove it
The elder Freed later returned with his wife and told the troopers that his son was not at home
The couple gave troopers the phone number for one of their son’s friends
after troopers told them dispatchers had heard a female voice on the 911 call
That young woman later told detectives that Freed had called her shortly after the crash and asked her to pick him up
The young woman told police that she overheard Freed tell his parents that the crash came as he “swerved to miss a deer that was in the roadway,” according to the affidavit
State police received a call the day after the crash from Freed’s father saying that Freed had been driving the car and was back at his home
he and his parents refused to answers questions
Detectives reported that Freed had fresh injuries on his left shoulder and abrasions on his body
Freed is scheduled to appear before a district judge for a preliminary hearing on May 19

(KLKN) – Logan Greeno is a Junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the president of the Husker Bass Anglers
Greeno helped the club win the 2025 sports club of the year award at UNL
A passion stirred by his late father and grandfather
growing up I did a lot of Walleye fishing out west with my grandpa,” said Greeno
I started fishing more public lakes in my hometown of Kearney
My Dad would take me often when I was younger and that’s really where I fell in love with Bass fishing.”
Greeno has helped grow the Bass Anglers from 20 members to now having around 80
The club competes around the country in large fishing events
“We traveled to pretty much every tournament we could,” said Greeno
Having support through local businesses and fundraising throughout our club is the only way we’re able to do it
It’s super expensive to travel and compete competitively
We’ve probably hit more tournaments this year then we have in the last two combined
we’ve been all over the place and had some good finishes.”
Greeno has also started his own organization and business
Casting to Make a Difference was created to help young anglers find their love of the outdoors with a mentor who can teach them tips and tricks of the trade
“Casting to Make a Difference is getting these experienced guys to become mentors,” said Greeno
“When it comes to fishing for some of these kids
they might not have that figure in their life to get them started.”
Greeno also started his own business called “Revived Bait Co.,” which aims to create baits from 100% recycled soft plastics
Whether you’re brand new to the sport of fishing, or an experienced veteran, Greeno’s advice is to just get out and fish.
“Get out in the outdoors, even if you are just throwing a bobber and a worm,” said Greeno. “Fishing is just so much fun and I would definitely recommend it if anyone hasn’t done it. Go get a license and go out and have a blast fishing on the water.”

The Seattle Mariners may be in first place in the AL West, but it's hard to ignore just how backward their 2025 season feels. It is their formerly much-maligned offense that is carrying them
What would help is if the Mariners got George Kirby and Logan Gilbert back in their starting rotation sooner rather than later
Both aces were seen throwing the ball over the weekend
with Kirby doing so in an especially notable way
After missing the first month of the season with inflammation in his right shoulder
the 27-year-old made his first rehab appearance for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers
To say it was encouraging would be an understatement
Kirby threw 42 pitches over three innings against the Las Vegas Aviators on Sunday
His fastball touched 97.8 mph and he struck out four while allowing one hit and no walks
George Kirby tops out at 97.8 mph in his first rehab start with @RainiersLand.Pitching for the first time since Feb. 26, the @Mariners RHP fans 4 and faces one above the minimum in 3 IP. pic.twitter.com/NSNzI6nCXp
As Adam Jude of The Seattle Times wrote on Sunday
the Mariners don't have a firm plan for when Kirby will return to the rotation
Yet he should only need one or two more rehab outings
putting him in line to return in the middle of May
There's never a bad time to welcome back an All-Star hurler whose career stats include a 3.43 ERA and 7.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio
Yet with Seattle starters struggling more than their 3.76 ERA lets on
getting Kirby back stands to be capital-H Huge
yet another encouraging development that took place on Sunday involved Gilbert playing catch at Globe Life Field
Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports shot the footage:
Logan Gilbert is throwing a baseball. pic.twitter.com/Wp2RHlVmiw
Sidelined since April 25 with a mild flexor strain in his right arm
Gilbert was meant to take a two-week break from throwing
as making lob tosses while playing catch isn't the same as "throwing" when the player in question is a pitcher
Even still, this particular game of catch reinforces what we were already thinking about Gilbert's injury: it could have been so much worse
Season-ending Tommy John surgery was the worst-case scenario for Gilbert
but it now seems as if that possibility is off the table entirely
As part of an interview with Brian Kenny on MLB Now on Friday
Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said he hopes Gilbert's return will happen in the general vicinity of Kirby's return
“We’re hopeful that we’re gonna see both this month, which is a little better we had thought initially,” Dipoto said, as per Brent Stecker of Seattle Sports
The 28-year-old Gilbert led the majors in innings and WHIP in 2024
and his first 30.1 innings of this year had yielded a 2.37 ERA
At 20-13, the Mariners already lead the AL West ahead of this week's showdown with the Athletics in Sacramento
If they can be this good despite not having their two best pitchers together in the rotation until May
the imagination naturally runs wild when thinking about what might come next

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas baseball is dealing with a slew of injuries as the No. 5 Razorbacks (37-9
14-7 SEC) prepare for a top-five showdown against No
The SEC Availability Report will be released later tonight
but Dave Van Horn hinted at Logan Maxwell being limited and freshman pitcher Carson Wiggins being unavailable to face the Longhorns (38-5
19-2) during his Wednesday press conference previewing the series
Wiggins was removed after throwing four pitches in a 9-5 loss to Florida on Sunday
Wiggins signaled to the dugout and summoned head trainer Corey Wood
Wiggins walked off the field and was replaced by Will McEntire
Van Horn said that the Razorbacks received good news when an initial MRI on Wiggins' elbow didn't reveal a tear
but the hard-throwing righty will undergo a second MRI this week to reveal the full extent of his injury
"It doesn’t mean that he’s going to pitch again this year even if it’s not (torn)," Van Horn said
If there’s a nerve issue or something jumped out
More: Three takeaways as Arkansas baseball falls to Florida, loses third straight SEC series
More: Arkansas baseball needs more from weekend starting pitchers to stop SEC slide
Maxwell exited Friday's game against Florida in the bottom of the fourth with an ailing hamstring he's been battling throughout the season
He didn't play in the final two games of the series
Van Horn said Maxwell won't be in the lineup for the series opener against the Longhorns Thursday night (6 p.m.
ESPN2) and will be limited regardless of his role this weekend
I mean he might be able to play during the series some time," Van Horn said
I don’t know about playing in the outfield yet."
Van Horn mentioned that freshman Gabe Fraser's 'having some issues.' The infielder has been the primary replacement for Nolan Souza
who is likely out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury
The injury to Wiggins comes as Arkansas was on the cusp of a healthy pitching staff
4.35 ERA) returned to the starting rotation earlier this month after missing nearly eight weeks with a shoulder ailment
0.60 ERA) missed the last five weeks with a back injury
but Dave Van Horn hopes the lefty can return before the final weekend of the regular season
is healthy and available to make his season debut after having surgery to address the bone-related issue in his elbow last spring
Wiggins began the spring by splitting closer duties with Christian Foutch
He hasn't picked up a save since early March
but Wiggins has been a reliable presence out of the Arkansas bullpen with a 3.21 ERA across 14 appearances
He has 20 strikeouts and nine walks in 14 innings

who made the All-Star team and received Cy Young votes
has joined him there due to a flexor strain
and the Mariners soon announced that he had departed due to forearm tightness
“I felt it a little bit warming up,” said Gilbert
Sometimes you just get going and it feels a little better
As MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer described it
both Gilbert’s pregame long-toss and warm-up pitches were of lesser intensity — he mostly didn’t use a windup for the latter — than usual
He didn’t throw a single split-fingered fastball because of the stress the pitch places on his forearm
“We didn’t think it was a good idea,” he said
as though throwing mid-90s fastballs and breaking balls through discomfort was otherwise perfectly sound logic
just kind of how I want to be known — eating innings and being dependable and being healthy,” said Gilbert
But I’ve been healthy and never really came out of a start
An MRI taken on Saturday revealed that Gilbert had suffered a Grade 1 flexor strain, meaning that it was a mild one, “relatively good news,” as the righty said
He was placed on the 15-day injured list for the first time in his career
and will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks before being reexamined
A return sometime in June is the best-case scenario
Gilbert finished sixth in the AL Cy Young race last year on the strength of a 3.23 ERA, 3.27 FIP and 4.1 WAR, and tied for second in the voting in our preseason staff poll
One notable change in his approach from 2024 to ’25 is that he had been throwing his splitter more often: 21.2% (22.6% prior to Friday)
The pitch has been especially effective; last year
batters hit .101 and slugged .162 while whiffing on 50.6% of their swings at the offering
they’re at .067 AVG (1-for-30) and .100 SLG with a 50% whiff rate
In light of Gilbert’s words and approach on Friday
it’s fair to wonder whether that uptick in usage factored into his injury
and whether he’ll back off his increased reliance on the pitch once he returns
Evans has begun to take a sweeper-first approach to pitching
Whereas last year he was using it 31% of the time
so far this year his breaking ball usage has been 46%
Evans’ slider spins at 2,800 rpm and has hellacious lateral wipe
His reliance on it robs it of some bat-missing ability
and Evans’ slider’s miss rate the last couple of years has been pretty average because he’s so often trying to throw it for strikes and hitters anticipate its arrival
But because Evans’ fastball is fairly vulnerable
he’s forced to lean on his breaking stuff
up to 97) has only generated six whiffs across 200 total pitches so far in 2025 (including his big league start)
hitters (in the minors and majors combined) have a .965 OPS against his mix of sinkers and four-seamers
Evans can change pitch shape and speed off of his primary sinker/sweeper mix
He’ll throw some harder cutters around 87 mph
as well as some slower curveballs and changeups
it’s really only the slider that’s plus
he throws a good rate of strikes and gets groundballs
he proved he could sustain this kind of stuff across more than 100 innings
Without a single pitch generating plus miss
he’s probably not going to be a star
but he does enough to be a useful member of a big league rotation
and his 45 FV grade is above the 40+ FV of last cycle when I thought Evans looked more like a nasty swingman or long reliever
Evans made his major league debut on Sunday against the Marlins
allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings; he got his first W in Seattle’s 7-6 victory
Both his four-seamer and sinker sat in the 91-95 range and averaged 92.9 mph
He threw six different pitch types including the two fastballs
but generated just four whiffs and a 17% CSW rate from among his 78 pitches
he threw 35-40 pitches to a pair of hitters from High-A Everett and “felt awesome.” He could begin a rehab stint as soon as this weekend
either with Tacoma or Everett due to their proximity to Seattle
and will build up his pitch count to the point where he can handle five innings
Kirby’s spot in the rotation is currently being filled by Emerson Hancock
who was lit for six runs in two-thirds of an inning in his first start on March 31
who scuffled in his 12-start stint with the Mariners last year (4.75 ERA
allowing four runs in 11 innings while striking out 11 in starts in Cincinnati and Boston
During Hancock’s brief exile to Tacoma, his spot in the rotation was filled by Luis F. Castillo, which isn’t what you call this guy when he makes a great start or pitches his way out of a jam with an emphatic strikeout
The Castillo in question is a 30-year-old righty who spent 11 seasons beating the bushes before making three appearances for the Tigers in 2022
and then took a two-season detour to Japan
where he pitched for the Chiba Lotte Marines and the Orix Buffaloes
seven runs allowed (six earned) and seven walks
As for “the real” Castillo — who early in his career had to escape the shadow of his namesake second baseman — he’s pitched to a 3.63 ERA and 3.93 FIP in a staff-high 32.1 innings thus far
His performance contains all kinds of warning signs
starting with an average four-seam velocity that’s dipped to 94.8 mph
and 97.1 in ’22); by both Stuff+ and PitchingBot
His strikeout rate has plummeted to 19.7% and his walk rate has risen to 9.9%; his 9.9% strikeout-to-walk differential is less than half what it was two years ago (20.3%)
they’ve hit him for a 90.3 mph average exit velocity
which may help to explain Tuesday’s walk total
He also noted that he dealt with minor arm soreness earlier this month.]
Bryan Woo has been the team’s best starter this side of Gilbert
He’s gained nearly a full tick on his four-seamer (95.7 mph
and the pitch has become one off the majors’ most effective thanks in part to the deception created by his low arm slot (27 degrees)
Batters have hit just .154 and slugged .288 against it thus far while whiffing on 32.5% of their swings (10th among pitchers with at least 100 four-seamers thrown)
His walk rate has just about doubled over his 2024 rate as well
though the jump from an otherworldly 2.8% to a still-impressive 5.5% isn’t a big deal
particularly when it’s offset by improved strikeout and home run rates
We can probably expect that offense to regress somewhat
if not all the way to the dire state of the pre-shuffle squad
So long as Gilbert and Kirby are able to return as planned
this team has a solid chance at a division title (44.6%
per our Playoff Odds) or at least a Wild Card berth (29.1%)
but we’ll see if that plan and those performances hold up
One of these names doesn’t look like the others and probably shouldn’t have gotten this many starts (Mikolas)
“He’s been one of the game’s most durable starters in recent years
with 103 starts since the start of the 2022 season
tied with Aaron Nola for fourth in the majors
Dylan Cease and Miles Mikolas (both 104)”
The Rockies have played in about one out of every nine games in Oracle Park’s 25-year history, and they’ve hated almost every second of it. The last time they won consecutive games in the same series in San Francisco was May 2018
when the Giants were using Austin Jackson as their starting center fielder and Gorkys Hernández as their leadoff hitter
Giants reliever José Váldez gave up two runs in the top of the ninth of that second game
even though it’s possible that Baseball-Reference made him up
So when the Rockies won the first game of the series
but it was time to tighten muscles you didn’t even know you had
Tyler Rogers entered Thursday’s game with one run allowed in 16 games
and then he gave up two runs in the span of 12 pitches
and the baseball gods’ group chat was going wild
even the baseball gods can only do so much
The jump scare will eventually get everyone
tidbits and general errata from the series
Willy Adames raised his season OPS by 73 points on Sunday
The first is that he had an outstanding game
The second is that it’s still early enough in the season that a single game can make that big of a difference in a player’s stats
I’m not sure what the expiration date is for the “it’s still early” excuse
but apparently it’s after the first week of May
Adames was hitting .202/.279/.263 at the conclusion of last Sunday’s game
and he’s up to .230/.312/.363 exactly one week later
and nobody will remember the slow start at all
Let’s agree upon a general rule that you can stop using “it’s still early” when it’s not possible for a player to raise his slugging percentage by 100 points in a week
and the Giants are finally getting the player they were expecting when they gave him a franchise-record contract
let’s appreciate how much worse it could have been for Adames and the Giants
If the team were 10 games under .500 with its prize free agent struggling mightily
it would have been easy to place an outsized portion of the blame on him
“Of course the Giants are struggling,” the pundit industrial complex would have noted
and he’s not doing anything.” That kind of attention makes the spotlight brighter
which eased just enough of the burden on Adames
which might have been the case on a different team in a different situation
When Adames came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday
the Oracle Park crowd gave him a standing ovation that roughly translated to
and we’re glad you’re here now.” It was a nice sentiment
It also might not have happened like that without the hot starts from Jung Hoo Lee and Mike Yastrzemski
Wilmer Flores’ well-timed RBI hits and a pitching staff that’s been among the most effective in baseball
and the 2025 Giants have done incredibly well in spite of Adames
Now they’ll have a chance to keep it going because of him
which is where they were expecting to be all along
the Giants designated Lou Trivino for assignment and recalled Kyle Harrison
You’re also recalling Kyle Harrison right now
It’s been quite the couple of months for him
Harrison found whatever was missing from his Cactus League outings
with uniformly positive reports about his velocity and stuff
and his Triple-A stats were trending toward absurdity
He struck out 33 percent of the batters he faced
He struck out seven batters over five innings in his last start for Triple-A Sacramento
which was especially impressive considering that the game was in Reno
which is like the Coors Field of the Pacific Coast League
to give you some idea of the offensive environment he was thriving in
Now the only question is how the Giants are going to use him. They’re saying he’s in the bullpen for now
they’ve been adamantly against the idea of him being a second left-handed reliever
even when that looked like an obvious fit on paper
It would be odd for the Giants to reverse course after he’s succeeded as a starter in Triple A
especially considering that Erik Miller has been far from overworked as the only lefty in the bullpen
Robbie Ray is coming off his best outing of the season
and his fastball-slider combination has moments where it looks just as unhittable as it was in his Cy Young season
Justin Verlander is pitching well enough through seven starts to stick with him indefinitely
Landen Roupp’s 3.86 FIP seems much more predictive than his 5.10 ERA
and his best career outing was just two starts ago
It doesn’t seem like the time to yo-yo him in and out of different roles and rosters
That leaves Jordan Hicks as the starter who might be on the bubble
He hasn’t had a quality start since his first game this season
and while there are a lot of questions about what the Giants would do with any of the other starters if they were removed from the rotation
That thing he did very well at times for his previous teams
Hicks moving to the bullpen is the easiest transition the team could make
Another possibility to consider is that it’s Hayden Birdsong who will squeeze back into the rotation
with Harrison taking over the every-fifth-day bullpen role that Birdsong has been so good in
Or maybe we should just stick with Occam’s Razor and assume that Harrison is going to step into the Lou Trivino role because that’s all we know with any specificity right now
Or maybe the Giants will use one of their extra starting pitchers to make a trade for Carlos Correa when they’re in Minnesota this week
He could fill in for Tyler Fitzgerald until he’s back
maybe we should just wait and see how Harrison is used
It’s notable that this is the first roster move the Giants have made that wasn’t a result of an injury
I almost miss the roster carousel of previous seasons
I’m pretty sure the Giants clubhouse doesn’t
Webb threw 14 four-seam fastballs against the Rockies on Sunday
That’s more swings-and-misses than he got out of any his sweeper
even though he threw a lot more of those pitches
The first time Webb used a four-seamer on Sunday was in a 3-2 count to Michael Toglia in the second inning
The pitch missed high and outside for ball four
and it would have been easy to ditch it entirely and stick with proven pitches
He used it again in a two-strike count with the very next batter
Webb would then strike out the next two batters on six pitches
finishing them both off with the four-seamer
It’s not just a pitch he’s using to change eye levels
and we’ve already established that they’re being punished by the baseball gods for stealing the secrets of rosin from Mount Olympus*
it’s not like their scouting report reads “can’t hit 94 mph four-seam fastballs.” It still takes a quality version of the pitch to get major-league hitters out
and that’s what Webb is showing off right now
It’s not like it’s a new pitch for him — he was throwing a four-seamer predominantly as a rookie — but the effectiveness is what’s different
but instead of an eagle eating the Rockies’ liver every day
they have to play at different altitudes and tolerate a foam triceratops

She graduated from Stanley High School in 1951
She worked as a bank teller at First National Bank in Oelwein prior to being united in marriage to Ray Logan on September 3
at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein
Ray and Ethel first lived in an apartment above the bank in Oelwein
and Waterloo before moving to Marshalltown
she continued employment at Brenton (later Wells Fargo) in Cedar Rapids
Ethel will be remembered for her Catholic faith
the tremendous joy she found in raising six children
and her remarkably positive outlook on all things in life
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years
her brother-in-law John Miculinich and her son-in-law Bob Walther
We wish to thank the care teams at Calvin Community and Davita East for their family-like love and support they poured out on our Mom
She thought of so many of her caretakers as family
Aunt Jane: “My last visit with Ethel was on November 21
But I will always be grateful for our e-mails and our phone calls every Tuesday
I always called her by her nickname which was "Eck" and she said so many times how she liked that because I was probably the only one left that knew her as " Eck”!!
The other memory we shared was that I referred to her as my "second mother" because she was 9 when I was born and she pretty much took over my care and I became HER baby!
So many times she told me that no matter how old we got I would always be HER baby sister!
She will always and forever be in my thoughts and prayers!
Julie Rae: “I guess have too many memories to choose a favorite
But truly the greatest gift has been to be by Mom’s side all these years after she and Dad moved to Des Moines in 2013
Bob: “I so enjoyed sharing meals with her at the various care centers over the years and seeing how engaged she was …EVERYONE just loved her
It has been a delight to become her son-in-law
Jeff: “I’ll always remember the great meals and the wonderful conversations that went along with the great food.”
Jerry: “All the great meals she prepared and was always in the kitchen getting ahead of the next meal.”
Julie Marie: “I loved our visits at the kitchen or dining room table chatting away about life
We’d always have a Diet Pepsi and sweet treat
especially Texas sheet cake with homemade frosting.”
Mom and I went down to watch the game on their big screen on the first floor
We had a lot of fun cheering for University of Iowa
but that’s the day Mom became a fan of Caitlin Clark and women’s basketball
Mom valued “Family.” She lived and breathed it
early one morning when I was about 11 years old
After a minute I thought it the perfect time to surprise him when he got back into the bedroom by hiding behind the door and smash him in the face with a pillow when he came into the bedroom
As I waited to pounce…steps closer and closer…and then-POW-AARGH!!-IT WAS MOM!
The fact I honestly don’t recall getting clobbered as I deserved and expected
is a testament to her taking things in stride.”
Laura: “Two special moments I had with Ethel that I would like to mention happened to be the first minute I ever met her and the last minute I ever saw her
she gave me the biggest hug and made me feel so welcome with all of her kind and genuine words
The last minute I ever saw her was on Thanksgiving Day 2024
I said to her that I really hated to say goodbye
I thank you for all your love and support throughout the years."
Joel: “One of my favorite memories of Mom is the way she used to wake us up when we were little by coming in singing “Good morning
Gina: “My favorite memory of Ethel is that when Ryan was born
Her presence and gentle guidance exuded so much warmth and kindness that not only did she calm Ryan down whenever he cried
had given me the confidence I needed as a new mother.”
Angela: “Making monster cookies in the Monster Cookie Bowl to send to Jim and Joel during basic training
They got packaged up in oatmeal containers with popcorn to keep them fresh
I now use that same bowl to cook for my own family
enjoyed listening to her chit-chat and her stories.”
Courtney: “One of my fondest memories of Grandma was Grandma and I in the kitchen
She enjoyed teaching me how to bake chocolate chip cookies
John: “Grandma always wanted to know how we were doing and was interested in what we had going on.”
Macy: “Grandma Ethel Logan made holiday’s and family reunion’s special for her 6 children and many grandchildren
Grandma will always be remembered for her incredible baking
memory and ability to always look on the bright side.”
MaryJane: “Playing games with her at Calvin and all the family reunions at the big house.”
Luke: “When I was in college at the University of Colorado
I would drive my Subaru back to Ohio to visit my mother
Des Moines is the midpoint between Boulder
I would always stop to see Grandma and usually would make it there by supper time
She would always be excited to have me join her supper table and show me off to her friends
we were ordering dessert and one of the options was spumoni ice cream
I had never heard of it before and we each ordered it
joking around that we weren't sure what it was
we learned that spumoni ice cream combines layers of chocolate
For some reason I remember that detail well
Every time I see spumoni ice cream on a menu
I think back to my Grandma and getting to sit down for supper with her in the middle of
Callan: “Grandma never missed an opportunity to proudly introduce me to Calvin staff whenever I visited
This made her so excited that she frequently forgot to eat the food they brought her.”
Kylie: “The most special memory I have of Grandma would be Thanksgiving 2024
My Mom and I were visiting her and decided to bring a board game called “Blank Slate.” The rules were fairly simple: You’re given a word or two and have to finish it with the first word that comes into your head
You write that word down on a mini white board
she was laughing or surprised by the other answers she would hear
She would laugh even harder when she made a mistake
I thought it was so sweet that she could laugh at herself
I’ll always cherish our memories together
Ryan: “My favorite memories of Grandma were going through old photos albums in the house in Van Horne
She always had so many personal anecdotes-what was going on in people’s lives
and thoughtful advice that really stuck with me
lives of everyone that knew her demonstrated empathy and compassion that defined her.”
Nicholas: “My favorite memory of Grandma has to be one of the quiet nights spent in Van Horne trying
to catch the fireflies in between my hands in the early evening hours
I remember always running back to her when I finally caught one
as I showed her the tiny bugs clasped in between my hands
the love and attention she gave me made me feel like I was on top of the world
She made that night seem magical and it’s a memory I will always cherish.”
Jack: “One of my favorite memories with Grandma was smelling her strawberry rhubarb pie and asking her what “rhubarb” was because I had never heard of it before
Her wise answer was to try a piece first and see if I still had any questions after
After scarfing down the heaping plate of pie and vanilla ice cream she served me
“Can I have another piece please?” She was always so caring and insightful about knowing exactly what to say to allow you to learn and experience at your own pace
and when to withhold that rhubarb is a vegetable and just let the pie speak for itself!”
Madison: “Playing Hi-Ho-Cherry-O with her and Boppa”
Josie: “When we used to stop and get her ice cream.”
Christopher: “When she let us make a map out of sticky notes
Maverick: “When she let us make a map out of sticky notes.”
Sebastian and Isabelle: Eating homemade ice cream with Mamma at Logan family reunions
We enjoyed our visits and will miss visiting.”
Hayden: “I always remember when I used to go out to visit Grandma and pick out flowers and acorns
That was my favorite thing to do with Grandpa JJ and Grandma."

lot worse': Gilbert exits early with forearm tightnessApril 26th
SEATTLE -- Logan Gilbert was on cruise control on Friday night
carving through the Marlins’ lineup and needing just 29 pitches to work through three perfect innings
Which made the Mariners’ call to the bullpen to begin the fourth that much more abrupt
as Gilbert was relieved by journeyman long reliever Casey Lawrence to begin the inning
Then one inning later in an eventual 8-4 loss
the Mariners announced that Gilbert exited with right forearm tightness
A source with knowledge of the situation told MLB.com that initial medical reviews revealed “modest” but “not zero” concern
and specifically that there’s optimism that his UCL is still intact
But the Mariners won't know more until after he undergoes an MRI on Saturday
“I don't want to make it like a pity party about myself,” Gilbert said
just kind of how I want to be known -- eating innings and being dependable and being healthy
But I've been healthy and never really came out of a start
Gilbert has never been on the injured list since his debut on May 13
2021 -- making every scheduled start since
“I've got a lot of faith,” Gilbert said
Gilbert experienced diminished velocity across all his pitches throughout the brief outing
His four-seam fastball velocity was down 1 mph from his 95.6 mph season average
his two-seamer was down 0.3 mph and his curveball was down 0.8 mph
The heater topped out at 96.1 mph and was as low as 93 mph
And he opted not to throw his splitter at all
as that specific pitch can cause more strain on the forearm
“We didn’t think it was a good idea,” Gilbert said
adding that he began noticing the issue when warming up and that it “just never really went away.”
Gilbert was seen with far less effort on his long tosses
his warmup pitches were mostly without a windup
“It didn't really get like a ton worse
The slight drop in speed was notable given that the workhorse typically carries his velocity from start to finish
compared to other starters who build it as their outing progresses

and April can be tough as you just get some stressful pitches to get over the hump
it just didn't really get to that point.”

The other 'Big Logan' leaps to The Show
SEATTLE -- Logan Evans told himself upon being selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2023 MLB Draft that he wouldn’t visit T-Mobile Park until he reached The Show
but it finally came to fruition on Saturday
when the promising right-hander arrived in Seattle after receiving word from the baseball operations staff that he’d be called up from Triple-A Tacoma and make his MLB debut in Sunday’s matinee against the Marlins
He’s essentially taking over the rotation spot held by Logan Gilbert, who was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with a right elbow flexor strain
“Getting out here to see the field for the first time was just breathtaking,” Evans said
“I've played it in [the video game MLB] The Show
but it's a lot bigger and much nicer than I anticipated.”
Evans is the Mariners’ No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline and one of the headlining arms among their next wave of talent
where he began this season following a promotion from Double-A Arkansas
“He understands what the art of pitching is all about,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said
“And he's got a lot of weapons in which to do that with
and along with the philosophy that we have here.”
but the more encouraging numbers were a 21.1% strikeout rate
a 59% ground-ball rate and zero homers allowed among 109 batters faced over 25 2/3 innings
That represented an improvement from Spring Training
when he surrendered 11 earned runs over eight innings (12.38 ERA) across four Cactus League outings
But his biggest growth came from that mid-summer move to the bullpen last year
“It was my first real bump in the road in pro ball
I use the kitchen sink and I rely on my routine
That kind of threw me off a little in the bullpen
I got to learn from that and understand and now get to use that moving forward.”
Evans figures to get a legitimate opportunity, given that the Mariners are now down two All-Star starters between Gilbert and George Kirby
has taken Evans under his wing -- the two were seen hugging in the home clubhouse on Saturday
It was only four years ago that Gilbert was in Evans’ shoes
a homegrown product who thrived by embracing the Mariners’ core pitching philosophies
“I don't want to ever pile on too much when there's a lot on your debut and that kind of stuff,” Gilbert said
“But I want to be able to help him -- help any of the younger guys -- like with questions they have
and just like not treating it too different
described himself as a “thrower” when he was first drafted but is now much more of a “pitcher.” They both call each other “Big Logan,” as Gilbert stands 6-foot-6 and Evans is 6-foot-4
“I didn't have any plan of attack,” Evans said
“Now it's buying into the scouting report I have on each individual hitter I face
throwing those first-pitch strikes and winning the 1-1 counts that we talk about
making my pitch and knowing what those hitters struggle with.”
By inserting Evans into the rotation now rather than for Gilbert’s next scheduled turn
the Mariners will be able to also bake in Monday’s off-day for extra rest with their other starters -- Bryce Miller being the soonest
as he was initially slated for Sunday and expressed “soreness” earlier this month
The Mariners have also been diligent about Bryan Woo -- their best starter so far in this young season -- operating on a six-day routine as much as possible
Greg Paul previously said he "never laid a hand" on Jake or Logan
though he admitted to taking a tough-love approach as a parent
Can the Rockies sneak another win in San Francisco
which is tied for the worst start in franchise history on the road with the 2021 and 2005 clubs
they are also in the midst of a 26-game stretch playing against clubs with records above .500 (May 1-June 1)
They will not face an opponent with a record below .500 until they head to play the Miami Marlins on June 2
Germán Márquez (0-5, 9.82 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies. Márquez has struggled this year in his return from Tommy John surgery. He recorded his 1,000th career strikeout on April 24 against the Kansas City Royals
His 9.82 ERA is highest among MLB pitchers while his .369 average against is the second-highest among starters with a minimum of five starts
His five losing decisions are also tied for second-most in MLB
In his last outing against the Atlanta Braves
Márquez tossed 5 1⁄3 innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits with just one strikeout and one walk
Márquez has not struck out more than four batters in a single start so far this year
Márquez has made 17 starts against the Giants
Márquez will face Giants’ right-hander Logan Webb (3-2
Webb is coming off a career season in 2024 where he matched a career-best 33 starts
pitched an NL-leading 204 2⁄3 innings and posted a 13-10 record and 3.47 ERA
Webb threw five innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk
Webb has faced the Rockies 16 times (15 starts) and owns an 8-3 record and 3.23 ERA

Gilbert (mild flexor strain) placed on IL for first time in MLB careerApril 26th
SEATTLE -- Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert is headed to the 15-day injured list, one day after he abruptly exited his start on Friday night at T-Mobile Park
But the 2024 All-Star appears to have avoided something far more severe
at least via the initial prognosis released by the club on Saturday
Gilbert underwent an MRI on Saturday morning away from the ballpark
which revealed a mild flexor strain in his pitching elbow
He’ll be shut down from throwing for two weeks then re-examined to determine next steps in his rehab
The injury was designated as a right elbow flexor strain on the transactional release published by the club
I would have been really surprised if it was something really bad
and especially when it just never quite got back right
I feel better today already than I did yesterday
So we probably don't want to rush anything
The Mariners also made a few additional roster moves to account for Gilbert and their bullpen, after Casey Lawrence was called upon to pitch five unexpected innings in relief of Gilbert in an 8-4 loss to the Marlins:
• RHP Logan Gilbert placed on 15-day IL• RHP Casey Lawrence designated for assignment• LHP Tayler Saucedo recalled from Triple-A Tacoma• RHP Troy Taylor recalled from Tacoma
And they’ll have to make one more on Sunday for Evans
This is the first stint on the IL for Gilbert
who has blossomed into one of MLB’s most durable pitchers
and you can quickly start to feel useless when it's like
So I feel like I can still play a role and help the team however I can
But mentally you always want to contribute
Gilbert has made every scheduled start since his big league debut on May 13, 2021, while racking up 734 2/3 innings over 127 outings since -- seventh most in the sport. In this stretch, he’s been worth 13.4 Wins Above Replacement
A huge part of his durability is rooted in his meticulous arm-care routine
which made the injury that much more frustrating
“There's only so much you can do,” Gilbert said
everybody goes through stuff at some point
So far this season, Gilbert has a 2.37 ERA (150 ERA+
where league average is 100) and leads all qualified starters with a 37.6% strikeout rate
The Mariners had gone 4-1 in his first five starts but lost the one on Friday after he departed
The right-hander could throw live batting practice as soon as Monday’s off-day, which would be the first time he’ll face hitters since the injury. But because building arm strength and volume and a Minor League rehab assignment are still on the horizon within his recovery, he’s still probably at least a few weeks away, barring setbacks.

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves:
· Logan Evans (#73), RHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
· Tayler Saucedo, LHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game April 26).
The Mariners 40-man roster is now full at 40 players.
Evans, 23, is set to make his Major League debut in today’s game. He has made 5 starts for Triple-A Tacoma this season, going 1–1 with a 3.05 ERA (11 ER, 25.2 IP), 4 walks, 23 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP. His last start came on April 20 at Oklahoma City, where he tossed 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs with 4 strikeouts.
Evans will be the third Mariners player to make his Major League debut this season, joining Ben Williamson (April 15 at Cincinnati) and Sauryn Lao (April 21 at Boston). He is also set to become the 48th pitcher in franchise history to start his MLB debut and first since Emerson Hancock (August 9, 2023 vs. San Diego).
The 6-foot-4 righty earned Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors on April 14 after tossing 6.0 innings allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and no walks with a season-high 7 strikeouts on April 9 against Sacramento.
Evans was the Mariners top pitching prospect entering the season, and 8th overall in the Mariners system by Baseball America. He is also ranked as the №10 Mariners prospect (MLB Pipeline).
The Ann Arbor, Michigan native was 9–5 with a 3.20 ERA (38 ER, 107.0 IP), 42 walks and 98 strikeouts in 32 games (22 starts) with Double-A Arkansas last season. In 10 starts before his transition to a reliever, he was 5–2 with a 1.23 ERA (7 ER, 51.1 IP), 15 walks and 47 strikeouts. He made 10 appearances as a reliever from June 4–30 before transitioning back to a starter.
Evans was selected by the Mariners in the 12th round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. He has appeared in 3 minor league seasons going 11–6 with a 3.05 ERA (50 ER, 147.2 IP), 48 walks, 136 strikeouts and a 1.15 WHIP in 42 games (32 starts).
Saucedo (saw-SAY-doe), 31, was recalled yesterday and tossed a scoreless 9th inning. In 3 games out of the Mariners bullpen this season, he is 0–0 with a 9.82 ERA (4 ER, 3.2 IP) with 1 home run, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Saucedo has also made 7 appearances with Triple-A Tacoma this season, going 1–0 with a 1.42 ERA (1 ER, 6.1 IP), 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Saucedo was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 21st round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Tennessee Wesleyan University. He made his Major League debut with the Jays on June 17, 2021. He was claimed off waivers by the Mets on Nov. 9, 2022, and then claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Mets on Jan. 31, 2023.
The Hawaii-born hurler grew up in Washington and attended Tahoma High School in Maple Valley, Washington. In 142 Major League appearances with Toronto (2021–22) and Seattle (2023-c), the left-hander is 5–2 with 4 saves and a 4.18 ERA (55 ER, 118.1 IP) with 55 walks and 103 strikeouts. “Sauce” has made 109 appearances for the Mariners (2023-c), going 5–2 with 4 saves and a 3.80 ERA (38 ER, 90.0 IP) with 44 walks and 84 strikeouts.

Help
Here's the status of injured Mariners heading into key divisional showdownApril 29th
SEATTLE -- On the heels of an off-day on Monday
and with the Mariners coasting into first place over the weekend
here’s a recap of where things stand on their injury front
What’s the longer-term status of Logan Gilbert (right elbow flexor strain)
The 2024 All-Star called the prognosis of his MRI exam “relatively” good news, which, all things considered, represented a far more promising tone than when he spoke on Friday shortly after suffering the injury
While any arm injury for a pitcher is concerning
the Mariners appear to have avoided something catastrophic
they aren’t out of the woods yet on Gilbert
who will be shut down from throwing for two weeks then be reassessed
he wasn’t yet sure what rehab he’d be able to do until then with the rest of his body
saying that he still needed to map out a short-term plan with Seattle’s athletic training staff
But given that he’ll be shut down altogether
that he’ll need to nurse the injury then rebuild arm strength and go through a Minor League rehab assignment
How about George Kirby (right shoulder inflammation)
Kirby is going through what’s akin to a Spring Training ramp-up
he could be cleared for a rehab assignment -- likely with Triple-A Tacoma or High-A Everett given their proximities to Seattle -- and make multiple starts
building on inning- and pitch-count in each
The Mariners almost certainly will want to see him reach the five-inning and/or 80-pitch threshold before being activated
so calendar mathematics suggest he’s probably still a month away
And Matt Brash (Tommy John surgery)
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander indicated this week that the club plans to ease Brash back once he’s activated from the IL -- specifically saying that Seattle’s “usage with Matt at the beginning of this active period of the 2025 season will not mirror his usage in the 2023 season
where he's pitching three out of four [days] or back-to-backs
right away,” adding that they “are going to have to ramp him up and be cognizant that he is coming back from Tommy John.”
Hollander added that Brash is “nearing the final stretch of rehab
And Ben Williamson (back spasm)
The rookie third baseman isn’t expected to be sidelined long
but after waking up with some back tightness on Sunday morning -- and with that day’s game being in the afternoon after a night game -- they opted to rest him and piggyback it with Monday’s off-day
with the hope that he’ll be good to go on Tuesday vs
Williamson has been everything that the Mariners could’ve hoped for so far
hitting .310 with just a 19% strikeout rate through his first 11 games -- while playing as-advertised defense at the hot corner
How have they been able to overcome these injuries
Williamson probably wouldn’t be here otherwise
Other guys who’ve also stepped up when given an opportunity have been infielders Miles Mastrobuoni and Leo Rivas
who have a combined .402 on-base percentage -- which is exactly what manager Dan Wilson needs from lower-lineup bats
And that’s not to mention Cal Raleigh and Jorge Polanco, who’ve played like All-Stars in the first month.
