(KGTV) — For Maricela Santa Cruz and her family
the sounds of construction tools have become a regular part of life
The Santa Cruz family has faced challenges in restoring their home after suffering significant damage from floods that occurred in January of 2024
I think a few weeks ago it rained pretty hard and I was just staring at this wall the whole time hoping because I mean it got repaired but it hadn't rained like that so I thought that's the true test.”
Maricela detailed the extensive damage that had to be addressed
“This part had to be completely gutted completely it was just soaking wet," she explained
"So we had to take down this wall and then our flooring got damaged so we had to repair that as well." Many essential elements
the Santa Cruz family is still navigating their repairs while figuring out how to finance them
A significant boost has come from SDGE’s Solar Equity Program
which was recently highlighted at a news conference for potential applicants
offers rooftop solar installations at low to no cost for qualifying homeowners
expressed relief when she learned she would receive free solar panels on her roof
"It's about over $200 a month that we're saving just in electricity
This considerable savings is especially beneficial for her family of five as they continue to restore their beloved home
the Santa Cruz family remains hopeful and determined to rebuild their lives in a house that has been their home for the past decade

Lomita City Council is having a different kind of election. I asked Wade to explain the difference
Wade Kyle: The Lomita City Council Election has historically been conducted as an “at-large” election
By that I mean that the entire city receives the same ballot with the same assortment of city council candidates to choose from as opposed to selecting from candidates that are running for a specific district because they didn’t have districts until this election
SK: There are 88 incorporated cities in L.A
how is Lomita different from the rest of the cities in Los Angeles County
Wade Kyle: Large cities like Los Angeles
and Pasadena created city council districts decades ago but most smaller cities in Los Angeles County conduct at-large city council elections
Lomita is one of a growing number of incorporated cities in Los Angeles County that have chosen to divide their city into council districts
Some say the council districts were created to avoid a lawsuit but today
only the Lomita residents that live in Lomita City Council District 2 will see the candidates running for Lomita City Council District 2
District 4 residents will have their own District 4 ballot
and 5 are not up for votes this election season but will be on the 2026 ballot
SK: As a candidate for Lomita City Council
how has the creation of city council districts impacted you
it’s one of the reasons that I’m in this race
I had considered running before the districts were created but when the Lomita City Council moved forward with the idea to implement district-by-district elections
2025SK: Why did the creation of districts make such a difference to you
I was reluctant to jump into a city council race for several reasons; 1) I would have been running against two long term incumbents; 2) at-large races require that the candidates reach out to the entire city as opposed to a single district within the city; 3) name recognition
although I regularly attend Lomita City Council meetings and am a public interest advocate
I don’t have much name recognition in Lomita
All or some of those barriers could be overcome with money but I don’t take corporate money
I am actually attempting to knock on every single door in my district before election day
That would have been impossible if this were an at-large election
SK: You talk about diversity in ways that are different from the typical talking points
Can you tell us what you mean when you talk about diversity
Wade Kyle: Social scientists have known for a long time
it's an established fact that diverse teams make better decisions
They've come to that conclusion based on the fact that collective wisdom consisting of different points of view tends to result in better solutions and better problem solving
at all levels of leadership in our government but especially at the city council of a city that is overwhelmingly diverse although you wouldn't know that by looking at the photos of the city council
SK: The role of a city council member in a small city is somewhat limited
Can you tell me - quickly - a couple of other areas you'd like to focus on
Wade Kyle: Lomita operates under the Council-Manager form of government
there is a city manager and the city council serves as the elected legislative and policy-making body of the City
I want to place additional focus on public safety and engaging the community.

The Brooklyn rockers will release the full LP July 24 via Exploding in Sound
With 232 pages and an expanded 12″ by 12″ format
our biggest print issue yet celebrates the people
and Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records
the sophomore album from the endearing Brighton duo is a jolt of punk-rock beauty
The NYC-based project’s second album delights in its confident sense of chaos
with vocalist Cole Haden knowing full well there’s no way we’re going to avert our gaze for a single moment
Channeling Ziggy Stardust’s glam transcendence
Will Toledo resurrects the album as a grandiose narrative vehicle while marking his valiant stride into the rock canon
The concept of “summer music” is a little weird to think about right now, but as the world outside begins to warm up, the Charli XCX bangers are beginning to drop. In addition to the many May releases rescheduled to drop mid-summer, Brooklyn’s Dig Nitty is adding to the pile of highly anticipated summer jams
announcing their debut Reverse of Mastery today with the quick-burning surfy “Lomita.”
Blending West Coast garage-rock guitars with the sounds of their native DIY scene
the two-minute introduction to Mastery manages to pack in catchy hooks
and some pretty relatable lyrics about returning to the outside world
“It’s a song about visiting a hospital—Lomita is the name of the street I would go on to get there,” vocalist Erin McGrath shares of her time spent in California
“It’s a song about wishing you could bring the outside world to someone inside
and how weird it is to be able to just leave a hospital room and go back to the outside world
The second verse compares death to take-off in an airplane or spaceship.”
Stream the track below, and expect Reverse of Mastery to be out July 24 via Exploding in Sound. You can pre-order it here.
The sheriff’s department said in a statement that detectives had spoken with family members of the abandoned infant and had identified the child and the pregnant mother. The department provided no further details.
The department said the infant, described as a girl between 7 and 9 months, was left at a store Tuesday evening in the 2000 block of Pacific Coast Highway by her pregnant mother.
A store employee told deputies that a pregnant woman had walked into the store and placed the infant in a shopping cart. At some point, the woman left the store and got into a taxi, leaving the child behind in the shopping cart.
The department released photos of the infant and the pregnant mother hoping that the public may recognize and identify them.
Sheriff‘s officials said for now, the infant has been placed in the care of the Department of Children and Family Services. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lomita Sheriff’s Station at (310) 539-1661.

Lots of restaurants let you grill your own meat
but only Wagyu Butcher seats you in front of a master butcher from Osaka carving hunks of well-marbled Japanese beef like a sculptor with clay
This low-key Torrance yakiniku spot has two omakase options at $50 and $70–both excellent deals–though the addition of freshly chopped beef tartare and Japanese A5 wagyu make the more expensive tier an easy yes
Each unique cut dissolves in your mouth faster than the last
which means your teeth are basically along for the ride
The minimal counter space only has about 20 seats (and 10 grills)
so come with a date and take turns flipping pieces of wagyu until they’re charred to your liking
Just don’t take your eyes off the heat too long—the delicate slices cook faster than you think
Japanese
Hermosa Beach
Ryla is the most exciting thing to happen to Hermosa Beach since the time Jack Black lived in the neighborhood
Unlike most restaurants that sit 1000 feet from a coastline
Ryla falls into the category of "Sexy Sit-Down Restaurant To Be Cool At." The candlelit dining room is loud enough for you to identify which R&B song is playing
but not so loud that people wouldn’t notice you singing along
And practically all of the Japanese-Taiwanese dishes at Ryla are worth braving the traffic on PCH for
We especially like their Hokkaido milk bread
and the Penicillin with tea-infused Japanese whiskey
Come to Ryla if you’re looking to impress someone who will appreciate snacking on inventive seafood or sipping a couple rounds of top-notch cocktails

Sushi
Gardena
This high-end sushi spot in Gardena has just 10 seats and is only open Friday to Sunday, but here’s the good news: their $230 omakase is well worth it. The minimalist Sonagi comes from the chef behind Katsu Sando (and Kura Sushi
19-course omakase here mixes traditional Japanese techniques with Korean touches and includes dishes like monkfish liver tarts with caviar
cut rolls filled with silky soy-marinated crab
and delicate sea trout sashimi rolled in toasted sesame seeds
Snagging a reservation can take some patience

7.9Ali'i Hawaiian GrillSeafood
El Segundo
This pint-sized poke counter in El Segundo
understands a fundamental truth: Quality fish is king (they source theirs from the Honolulu Fish Auction)
From succulent cubes of ginger soy ahi to a slightly wasabi-y ponzu salmon
everything here tastes exactly like something you’d get from a Foodland poke counter in Hawai’i
It comes with your choice of poke flavor and a generous serving of kalua pork over perfectly cooked sticky rice
8.5Sakae Sushi1601 W Redondo Beach Blvd Gardena
Come any day of the week (except Mondays when they’re closed) and you’ll find a sizable crowd of parents
and grandmas running errands all waiting in line outside Sakae Sushi
family-run shop that’s been open since the ’60s
hidden behind an office building in Gardena that serves simple handmade sushi
wrapped up in beautiful white parchment paper and a green bow
so you can try each kind of sushi on the menu
There are bright yellow tamago maki enveloped in a fluffy
sweet egg blanket and tongue-curdling sabazushi
a bite-sized piece of pickled mackerel placed on a mound of vinegared rice
8.0Barsha1141 Aviation Boulevard Hermosa Beach
Wine Bar
Set back from the beach in a spacious Hermosa Beach shopping center
under-the-radar restaurant that South Bay residents probably don’t want anyone outside of their zip code to know about
it’s too charming (and reasonably priced) not to share: The food at this breezy
with a good mix of small plates like falafel sliders and roasted cauliflower alongside larger
shareable entrees like juicy lamb meatballs or a rich seafood stew
And since the owners also run a wine shop nearby
you’ll find a fantastically priced list that offers various-sized pours to suit however many people you’re drinking with
8.0Sushi Chitose402 S Pacific Coast Hwy Redondo Beach
Redondo Beach
affordable omakase in an almost impossible-to-spot building on PCH
preferably at the bar where you can watch baseball behind the heads of the people preparing your fish
you’ll get somewhere around 15 pieces of fish
but you’ll probably end up asking for another piece of the fantastic
7.9Aunty Maile’sHawaiian
Torrance
the owners of Aunty Maile’s ran restaurants in Kona and Las Vegas
spreading legit island cooking across the mainland like Johnny Appleseeds
where they’ve become a local name for huge portions of dishes like chicken katsu loco moco and oxtail soup in a casual
Though they also offer a few flavors of ahi poke
Pick two proteins—we like the sweet-and-sticky furikake fried chicken and the meaty grilled kalbi—and they’ll load a plate (or takeout box) with rice and a big scoop of their peppery mac salad
The sweet and sour spareribs on Tuesdays and beef stew on Saturdays are certified winners
8.5Al-NoorIndian
Lawndale
If In-N-Out is usually your first LA meal after landing at LAX
That’s because this little restaurant between a cigar store and a Domino’s in Lawndale is home to the best Indian and Pakistani food in Los Angeles
We have lost many hours of sleep thinking about their chicken korma
And even if we had to travel hours in blistering
we would gladly take the journey for a top-notch meal here
7.8Pollo A La Brasa VermontPeruvian
Best known as the wood-roasted chicken spot that you can smell from a quarter-mile away, Pollo A La Brasa Vermont is the older sibling of the extremely popular Peruvian-style chicken spot in Koreatown, Pollo A La Brasa Western
there's a huge glass wall in the kitchen
where you can watch hundreds of golden chickens slowly roasting on spits
or whole birds—which come with sides like fries
or salad—are every bit as salty and juicy as you want the rotisserie chicken to be
you may have to borrow a bottle of the spicy green aji sauce from the table next to you
but it's what you should be smothering your chicken in anyway
8.4Coni'SeafoodMexican
Inglewood
Coni’Seafood isn’t just one of the best restaurants in Inglewood, it’s one of the most essential mariscos spots in all of Los Angeles
The Mexican seafood specialist on the southern tip of the neighborhood is definitely a bit more expensive than other restaurants in the area
but that’s the price you pay for some of the most delicious seafood in the city
You can’t go wrong with any of the ceviches or aguachiles
but the marlin tacos and whole snook need to hit the table or you can’t actually tell your friends you came here
7.8Gardena Bowl Coffee ShopDiner
If you know the laws of eating food inside of bowling alleys
you know to generally steer clear altogether
Break that rule at Gardena Bowl Coffee Shop
This tiny diner inside a neighborhood bowling alley has a very good menu of every American breakfast staple in the book
but you’re here for their Hawaiian/Asian fusion dishes
The kimchi bacon fried rice is excellent and we wish we were eating the Hawaiian Royal—a massive plate of eggs
8.3Jame EnotecaItalian
Located in a downtown El Segundo strip mall
Jame looks more like a Panera bread than a very legitimate Italian restaurant
this tiny spot is home to some very good food
Whether it be the giant plate of prosciutto
the food at Jame is delicious across the board
and everything outside of the big plates falls under $25
8.3Fishing With DynamiteManhattan Beach
Fishing With Dynamite is a very small seafood spot with a handful of tables and one of the best raw bars in the city
You will certainly be asked to wear shoes if you try to come in straight from the beach for crab cakes
It’s a great spot for a date or an extravagant lunch
but we especially love getting off a plane at LAX and waiting out the traffic here with multiple orders of Peruvian scallops
8.2MadreKaguraLunasia Dim Sum House Torrance2575 E Pacific Coast Hwy Torrance
Dim Sum
The Lunasia location in Torrance has become our favorite dim sum destination in the South Bay
There’s just something great about kicking off your morning with plump pork buns
crunchy shrimp rolls on their string-lit patio
All of the ordering is done via the QR code at your table
but the made-to-order dim sum dishes come so quickly
Come with a group after 11am on weekends and there will almost certainly be a wait—the space is enormous
so hang in there and you’ll probably be eating within 30 minutes
8.4OtafukuThe Arthur J903 Manhattan Ave Manhattan Beach
Steaks
The Arthur J is the Jeff Goldblum of steakhouses—we haven't met anyone yet who is immune to its charm
The dark leather booths and sleek walnut ceilings inside this Manhattan Beach spot radiate laidback luxury
the kind you'd usually find in a members-only supper club
The steaks are cooked over a wood-fired grill
Once you've decided which cut you want
and sides to round out your red meat dream
with a side of chimichurri and a little slab of foie gras right on top
Keep this spot in mind when you want a steak dinner that feels both classic and cool without being too over the top
8.1Ayara ThaiThai
Westchester
Ayara Thai is a neighborhood staple in Westchester that also happens one of the city's best Thai restaurants outside of Thai Town
The family-run spot has been cranking out tremendous classics like khao soi and pad see ew for years
and they even sell their own Thai curry kits in case you want to make their family recipes at home
Each plump wing is marinated for maximum flavor
then served with a dipping sauce that takes the dish to a new level
7.9Carnitas El ArtistaTorihei Yakitori Chori-Man2309 S Alma St San Pedro
Burritos
San Pedro
The Chori-Man is a chorizo shop that mostly sells to restaurants
any regular person can walk in and get a few sausages
There are four different types of chorizo you can add to any of their dishes
we especially like the poblano chili-heavy green pork one
Just keep in mind that this is a takeout window with no outdoor seating
so you’ll probably end up eating your glorious tortilla-wrapped meal while standing on the sidewalk
The Chori-Man also serves homemade blueberry and strawberry horchata—if you see either one
8.3Sushi InabaRainbow Road of seafood restaurants—simply put
This tiny omakase spot hidden inside I-Naba Restaurant in Torrance feels less like a sushi bar and more of a meeting of the Secret Society of Seafood
they only offer a very high-end omakase for $280 per person
filled with symmetrical cuts of ultra-fatty bluefin toro
combining a mix of hard-to-find cuts of fish with some of the freshest crustacean and seafood you’ll find on dry land
reservations often book out at least a month in advance

Two men pray at an early morning service at La Lomita chapel
Before sunrise and illuminated by lantern light
and Roy Rogers' song "Blue Shadows On The Trail" plays from a battery-operated radio in the chilly pre-dawn gloom as Rev
Roy Snipes makes his way down the aisle to preside over the Mass
The choice of processional music is an unusual one
Father Snipes is known around here as the cowboy priest
and on the altar with him are two of his rescue dogs
Father Roy Snipes with his dogs outside of La Lomita chapel
you made our hearts and you know us and you know our affliction and our astonishment at the arrogance of our own government desecrating the sanctuary of our homeland ..
ignoring our rights as free Americans and sons and daughters of Texas
The local Catholic diocese is mired in a legal battle with the U.S
which is right next to the Rio Grande River
25 miles of President Trump's proposed border wall
funded in 2018 when Republicans still held a majority in the House
La Lomita — which means little hill — has been here almost since the southern border was created
following the Mexican-American War in the mid-19th century
It's part of a series of missions established by the Catholic Church to maintain a presence on the U.S
The town of Mission — now with a population of around 80 thousand people — grew up around it
money was allocated for "levee fencing" on the land at La Lomita – a massive 30-foot wall on the north side of the property
Snipes says he believes a wall will desecrate this place
The Mass ends outside the chapel with a hymn in Spanish
and the congregation gathers around a bonfire amid the twisted mesquite trees
Rene Villarreal is a 51-year-old electrical contractor and a father of five sons
He says this is more than just a spiritual place
"I mean you're here in the mornings," Villarreal says
"And you just wonder how many of your ancestors have been here praying for the same things we're praying
and asking our God to help us and give us the strength to go through another day."
he has deep roots on both sides of the border
People here switch easily between Spanish and English: The town of Mission is in Hidalgo County which is 92 percent Latino
and many of the residents have family in Mexico
"Look at people just eating breakfast here..
under some of these trees here in this nice park here in Mission
It was the same message he delivered to President Trump when he met him last month during Trump's border visit
How can we get even water and sewer on the other side
they say they will have some gates and all that
The latest legal battle over the land between the government and La Lomita took place last week
The local diocese tried and failed to stop the government from surveying the chapel land
Mary McCord is a senior litigator at Georgetown Law's Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection
and she's one of the lawyers representing the diocese
She says the government has the right to claim private property for public use — but La Lomita is a chapel
"Is that government can't take action that substantially burdens the free exercise of religion and that is not only part of the First Amendment
but it's also part of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act."
She says the church argues that the wall is inconsistent with Catholic teachings
"which includes this principle of universality that all people are equal and need to be treated as such
and provided with basic necessities of life
and according to the teachings of the pope migration is an important piece of this."
The next court battle will be over the government's plan to actually seize the land and start building
Driving down the proposed path of the border wall
there's an RV park where Texans come to enjoy the warmth in the winter
There's also a riverside restaurant and a lot of farms and houses
But there's also the constant presence of Customs and Border Protection
The area encapsulates the debate over border security — specifically
is a businessman and supporter of President Trump's proposed border wall
"Our national security is at risk," he says
He runs his construction business from his ranch
He also met with President Trump when he was down here last month
"When I asked President Trump to sign my name tag," he says
and I just kind of reached out and started undoing my belt."
digging around his pants in front of the president
"Everybody kind of lost their head like whoa
He was actually going for his rodeo championship buckle
since he's a vocal supporter of the president's signature campaign promise
he threw a barbecue for border patrol agents working without pay during the shutdown
and I asked them their opinion of the wall," he says
"Whether the mayors or local law enforcement want to say so
They've never had [migrants] walk up on their doorstep at three in the morning begging for help."
Awbrey says he got a lot of hate on social media
He says those labels don't work on the border
His wife is Latina and he speaks fluent Spanish
And he's friends with Father Snipes — he was even baptized at La Lomita six months ago
when he became a Catholic at his wife's request
"Father Roy [Snipes] and I discussed this," Awbrey says
"And he knows what side I stand on and he understands my views and I understand his as well
You know Father Roy is a very compassionate man
I love him to death and I'll do anything in the world for him."
A bumper sticker on Father Roy Snipes' car
You can stand on different sides of an issue and still respect each other
Customs and Border Protection declined to comment for this story
They did confirm that no work has begun yet on the Mission section of the border wall
And 72-year-old Leonor Ochoa is sitting at the table enjoying the food and company
"We live in a neighborhood where everyone shares," she says
and all of us are coming together and sharing our tacos

Edible Monterey Bay
2021 – Blame it on Peter Bargetto’s fascination with the grapes of his ancestors who hail from Piemonte
Or blame it on a quirky obsession of one local viticulturist
but there are Nebbiolo vines thriving in the Santa Cruz Mountains
vineyard owner Mark Porter and I stopped to admire a little lily-padded lake
just a few miles past Wrights Station Vineyards & Winery
is a 12-acre vineyard named for this tiny lake discovered by Spanish explorers
which roughly translates to Lake of the Low Broad Hill
Porter tells me the name appears on all the USGS maps of the area that he’s seen
It catches rain runoff: remember rain?
along with all the toys and props needed to support them
this 44-acre property was once home to a vineyard that was originally planted in 1983 and then left to wild.
Wild is a verb here in the rugged mountains
They began a massive clearing of the 44-acre property in 2013
involving backhoes and tractors and the expertise of a Watsonville-based land engineer
the Porters began planting their 12-acre vineyard
She figured land up there near the San Andreas faultline would be a good deal and besides
she needed an escape from her crazy high tech world
the ambitious among us just trade one kind of crazy for another
It’s now one of the most popular Air BnB rentals
searching for the meaning of lifers and full moon lovers
in a beautiful home overlooking a block of Pinot Gris
Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc climb up the hilly slopes on the western side
and plantings of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese sit
so stunningly different from the manner in which the other varieties are pruned
Mark says they weren’t sure about the idea of Nebbiolo at first
“Prudy said she’d failed at growing this variety at a couple of other sites
‘do we want to risk this?’ It took awhile for the Nebbiolo to mature
Given that we’re almost always above the fog in the summer
we’re able to give it all the sun and degree-days that it needs
along with the cool evening winds blowing across the top of the fog layer in the evening
The 2019 Soquel Vineyards Nebbiolo from Lago Lomita Vineyard won a Best of Class at the 2021 San Francisco Chronicle Competition
Winemaker Peter Bargetto was clearly thrilled to find this fruit and to make something that resonated with the judges
“The 2020 vintage of Nebbiolo is aging half in one-year-old barrels and half in new Gamba barrels
with a rich mouthfeel and has enough depth to create warmth and creaminess.”
He says they’ve been doing egg white fining trials
and will add four egg whites per barrel prior to bottling
“One filtration will be enough to protect the integrity of this wine
The structure is solid and it’s a wine built for the cellar
The Porters just planted another 2 acres of Nebbiolo
bringing them up to almost 3.5 acres total of the grape
They now have two clones of the variety and are looking forward to seeing what Bargetto
who currently gets their entire Nebbiolo crop
They also recently planted another four acres total of Cabernet Franc and additional clones of Pinot Noir
most of it goes to Soquel Vineyards and Wrights Station
Dan Lokteff makes a Pinot Grigio and Cabernet Franc as a Lago Lomita vineyard designate under the Wrights Station label
Lokteff also makes Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo
You can purchase the wines on their website and at the Summit Store.
Foxx continues to scout for other sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains that might be ideal for Nebbiolo
the grape whose name is derived from the Piemontese word for fog
She’s a real devotee of the grape and she’s not alone: Fogarty Winery has two sites planted to Nebbiolo
one at the estate where the winery is located and another at Gist Ranch
winemaker Nathan Kandler makes a Nebbiolo that echoes all the hallmarks of Piemonte renditions: roses
and a slightly brick orange rim in the glass.
2019 Beauregard Oeuf en Béton Pinot Noir – You wouldn’t expect a winemaker to do pinot in concrete
which is the luscious essence of Chardonnay uncluttered by oak
this pinot simply charms from the pink rose petal color to the lipsmacking finish of cherry pastilles
You would be fooled into thinking it’s a rose
carried along by a relentless river of acid
the cherry candy keeps it lively and alluring.
2013 Kings Mountain “Bacchus” Pinot Noir – At a wonderful SCMWA wine dinner held at Armitage Winery
former home of Heart Of The Mountain in Scotts Valley last Sunday
I had the privilege of pouring two pinots from Kings Mountain in Woodside
This 2013 isn’t going to calm down for decades
so you can buy a lot of it and be sure it will outlast you

(KABC) -- An investigation is underway after a large three-alarm fire ripped through an apartment building in Lomita
Saturday in the 2100 block of Palos Verdes Drive North
then a third-alarm was called around 8:30 p.m
It took 150 firefighters nearly four hours to extinguish the flames
Video from the scene showed heavy flames and smoke coming from the roof of the building
It's unclear how many people had to be evacuated but no injuries were reported
The apartment building borders the Green Hills Memorial Park Cemetery
The cause of the fire was being investigated
previously inhabited by Stanford’s Kappa Alpha (KA) fraternity
will be reassigned as themed housing for the 2020-21 school year
Vice Provost for Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole announced this week
the house will serve as the Cartographic Arts Academic Theme house
“It’s a community we can trust to uphold the Standards of Excellence,” Brubaker-Cole wrote
“You get 10 Greek houses when you earn 10 Greek houses.”
This decision has been made following KA’s failed attempt to repeal their two-year loss of housing privileges to Provost Persis Drell and a student panel
It’s out of our hands now,” commented KA President Chad Smith ’21
This transition is possible in part through collaboration with the Stanford Cartographic Society (SCS)
Their student representatives worked with the university to “foster an environment of creativity and precision for the University’s map-making community,” according to the house’s new page on the ResEd website
the house will no longer be searchable on Google Maps and will only be found on TreeMap
The house is being outfitted with a drafting studio
a single MacBook with publishing software and a map library containing antique maps and over 200 unique globes
and events are prohibited to prevent spills
“I really believe this choice reflects the wishes of the student body,” said a student in the SCS planning to move into the house next year
ResEd is currently taking pre-assignment applications in anticipation of an overflow of potential residents
The Daily is still hopeful in securing 550 Lasuen

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An 11-year-old boy was injured Thursday evening after being struck by a car while riding his bike in San Diego's Lomita neighborhood
According to the San Diego Police Department
Officers say the child crossed over the northbound lane and went onto the east sidewalk before turning back and leaving the sidewalk in a westerly direction
A 37-year-old woman was driving her Hyundai Elantra in the northbound lane of 1300 Woodrow Ave when her car hit the child as he entered the lane from the sidewalk
The boy sustained a fractured left femur and tibia
SDPD says the woman was not injured and stayed at the scene after the crash
She is not suspected of driving under the influence

you’ll find an interesting assortment of buildings in what looks like regular ol’ residential neighborhood
But every Sunday it suddenly becomes something a bit saucier
Pepe Maldonado is the persona who has the persona to make La Lomita Park what it is
“We have our own dances every Sunday,” Pepe said
The peculiar dance hall is darn popular on Domingo
it’s been open every single Sunday since Pepe built it back in 2000
But what makes this dance hall different from the rest is the type of tune you’ll get to take in
“Conjunto music has got a different beat than the original Tejano or Norteno music,” according to Pepe
“They basically use the same instruments we do
but it’s a different beat and a different kind of music
The sound of south Texas resonates off the walls of La Lomita as Pepe keeps a watchful eye on the reception of the serenade
Irma his wife of 54 years takes the fee at the door while his son Joe does what he can to keep his Dad’s dream adrift
So he built it and people started coming.”
Now Pepe is no stranger to this particular kind of music
“A lot of people recognize him because of his last name,” Joe said
Pepe will clear the pipes and sing with other south Texas artists like Gilberto Perez
and he gets a kick out of all the people running up to the stage to see him play,” Joe said
Pepe was a popular Conjunto star in the 60s
and his star power still pulls in the people
I still get up there and sing and do what I used to do 40-50 years ago
His daughter Diana makes some the darn best enchiladas we’ve ever had while Rosie gives gringos like me a few lessons on how to cut a rug to conjunto
You can see you’re surrounded by some kids there.”
This mixture of music with Mexican roots is blended in a melting pot method with sprinkles of Italian
just about everything that’s gone into making south Texas what it is today
It’s been said that dancing is way to find yourself and lose yourself
Well at La Lomita Park you’ll definitely lose yourself to the music but you will also find yourself in the friendly faces fixated on continuing a family tradition that happens to be a terrific part of Texas culture
and have a good time every Sunday.,” Joe said
Fernando chatted with us virtually from his home in Ensenada
but canceled and postponed to 2021 because of the pandemic
Unsurprisingly, Fernando says the valle has been hurting. He closed La Lomita’s tasting rooms, as well as Lunario—the winery’s new restaurant that had just opened last fall—for nearly four months
They managed to keep their employees on payroll
and have since been able to reopen at a limited capacity
Fernando says they miss the regulars from Southern California who appreciate the valle and its vintners
we also learned a lot about the ins and outs of exporting wine from the valle to California
that small businesses in Mexico don’t have access to any kind of government assistance
