London was the third stop on our summer travels
The first time I visited London was way back in 1981
That was also the first time I left the USA
except for the time I went to Canada for the Toronto worldcon in 1993; I was over in the UK for six weeks on that first trip
traveling everywhere from Scotland to Cornwall
on the theory that if I was going to cross that great big ocean
I might as well see everything there was to see
but I loved what I did see… museums and castles
Hadrian’s Wall and Cecil Court and so much more
I have lost track of how many times I’ve been there since
and yet there’s still so much to see and do
starting with a delightful lunch with my British editor
Across the street from our restaurant a chess game was in progress
First time I’ve gotten up in it; on previous visits the lines were always too long
the playwright who is adapting the tourney at Harrenhal for the stage
We grabbed a lunch at our hotel a few days before seeing the play
I am told that the show is coming along splendidly
Our team did a run-through for the managers of a score of West End theatres (before we arrrived
We have not nailed down our opening day yet (next year
but it looks as though we will have our choice of theatres
We also got together with Maisie Williams for pizza and pasta
where Winston Churchill used to get his headware

Texas — Residents from the London Towne subdivision protested today with signs
Residents told KRIS 6 News that their children have to walk across a busy London Pirate Road
“There is no sidewalk,” and that “kids have almost been hit.” Residents also said the kids have to walk in ditches to stay safe
safe access optional?" We all know that our children need to attend school
Their access to the school is unfortunately unsafe."
said,"The bare minimum that's being requested is a sidewalk being built."
Pereira and Hargraves were just two of several London Towne residents protesting about the lack of sidewalks along London Pirate Road
They directed their concerns toward Braselton Devlopment."It's very scary for a 12-year-old or a 10-year-old to walk along these roads with all these cars zooming by
So the safest path is the ditch," Pereira said
tells KRIS 6 that building a sidewalk may sound simple
that road [London Pirate Rd] was a county road
and the county does not allow sidewalks on its streets."
Braselton added that the City of Corpus Christi annexed just the roadway itself
further complicating things."That ties a lot of hands because then it falls within the policies of the city
That's why we offered to go with the homeowners to petition for a sidewalk to be placed there," Braselton said
There is a temporary solution in place right now: this granite path
and then that granite will get pushed to the side
I've asked four or five builders that I know in the neighborhood," Hargraves said
Braselton said the temporary path is ADA-compliant and is used by the city of Corpus Christi for their walking paths
He also mentioned that he has moved up the timeline of building the next unit at London Towne
which he said will ultimately solve the problem."We have construction drawings underway for the next unit of London Towne
which includes connecting sidewalks to Lady Claudia Blvd
which is in connection to the school," Braselton said
That permanent solution would include a concrete path to the school from the London Towne subdivision
It could be finished as early as fall of 2025

(7News) — When 7News On Your Side drove through the large London Towne community of Centreville Monday
there were bags of trash lying out everywhere
Residents say no one has picked up trash in the community since late November
We spotted wildlife including squirrels and even turkey vultures picking at the trash
and many bags have holes in them as a result
Residents who pay homeowner’s association fees say they are growing increasingly frustrated by the situation
which they describe as unsanitary and ugly
the homeowners association dropped a previous trash company after complaints of inconsistent service
In early November the HOA board of directors hired a company called Haulin’ Trash
which picked up trash in the community for a short time before filing for bankruptcy
the HOA has struggled to hire anyone else; one community message included a complaint that the HOA is being quoted prices much higher than previous quotes
it affected other Fairfax County communities in addition to London Towne – the county estimates about 3000 people in all lost their trash service
the county board of supervisors voted to waive fees for affected residents who bring their trash to either the county’s I-66 Transfer Station or its I-95 Landfill Complex
Residents must bring a receipt from Haulin’ Trash or a letter the London Towne HOA says on its website it is sending to residents
The county says both facilities are open 7 a.m
One resident told 7News that she and others didn’t want to take their trash to the landfill in their cars
since in many cases the bags have holes due to animals getting inside
Residents say they are just hoping the HOA is able to hire a new company soon
County officials say trash companies are facing shortages of drivers and trucks

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse Marks 150 Years Have You Toured It Yet?
its co-owner dreaded reading Patch the following morning
Paige Blair, who owns the business with her husband Robbie
said she feared a flood of negative comments after the stabbing incident
citing the establishments “rough” reputation
But less than an hour after the story hit Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch’s front page
what she read left her overwhelmed and speechless
“I was really watching the Patch because of the negative feeling that the community [previously] had about the place
I was thinking ‘Now they’re going to say it all again,’” Blair said
What she expected was a flood of condemning and negative comments
but what Blair found was an overflow of positivity and an “unbelievable” amount of support from the community
Blair and her husband Robbie purchased the Londontowne Pub
give the business a slightly new name and establish the pub as a beloved staple within the surrounding neighborhoods
we wanted people to come out and make it a community place—to get rid of the old image,” Blair said
“I would say [the old reputation] was not family friendly and rough.”
Blair knew they were “on their way” to reforming the restaurant’s reputation
but it took a stabbing and some critical commenters for them to realize just how much the community truly appreciated their pub and its new feel
“I thought there was going to be a lot of negativity
but I didn’t realize that they supported us that much,” Blair said
“I’m so grateful … I’m truly overwhelmed.”
The stabbing occurred inside Blair’s Londontowne Pub and Grill just after midnight on Saturday
Blair said her business was bustling with people who specifically wanted to show that the incident wasn’t going to diminish their patronage
The community’s support of Blair’s Londontowne Pub and Grill all began when a Patch reader said the pub was “filled with a bunch of low class dirt bags.”
Just minutes after the initial comment
a flood of supporters came to defend the establishment
its patrons and the Blairs for devoting themselves to reshaping the pub’s culture
The Blairs purchased the pub just less than three years ago, and coincidentally, the critics of the business admitted they hadn’t been there in about three years due to their distaste for the restaurant. Commenters who supported the business consistently told critics that the pub had drastically changed in just a three-year span
Mike H. wrote
“In the last three years under the new ownership it has changed dramatically
I now like it as a local dive bar with decent/good food
I would like to see the owners continue to improve the restaurant and make it into a hidden gem.”
Another user named Jason told critics
“If you went there lately you would see different.”
Of the 46 comments left on the article as of 3 p.m. on Monday, an overwhelming majority of them openly supported the Blairs and their pub
Do you feel strongly about Blair’s Londontowne Pub and Grill
Does the stabbing deter you from heading to the local pub

Authorities investigate Thursday morning after a man was shot by a police officer in the 900 block of East 100th Street in Pullman
Police responding to a domestic situation fatally shot a man who pointed his gun at police Thursday morning in the Pullman neighborhood
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the man as 43-year-old Devon L
at the University of Chicago Medical Center
officers responded to a domestic call of a person with a gun at an apartment complex in the 900 block of East 100th Street where an armed man was in a bedroom with a woman
As officers attempted to deescalate the situation
and Smith allegedly pointed his gun at an officer
As the attack unfolded in the London Towne Houses complex
a Calumet District officer reported it to 911 dispatchers and several other officers arrived
Were shots fired by police or just the offender?’’ a dispatcher asked
who was initially taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center serious condition
The woman inside the home was taken to an area hospital for treatment
and an officer was taken to an area hospital for observation
Vanessa Dallas left her home to go for a walk around 8 a.m
and was curious about the increased police presence in the area
“I figured it had to be something serious,” Dallas
Sandra Brown said she didn’t hear any gunfire or police sirens
but “looked out her window and saw all the commotion” around 7:30 a.m
Brown has lived in the apartment complex for over two decades and said she doesn’t feel any less safe because of the shooting
Incidents like this happen in the home and on the streets,” Brown said
Neither neighbor knows the people involved
a heavy police presence remained hours after the shooting
Detectives clutching clipboards or on cellphones funneled in and out of a home cordoned off by red and yellow police tape
The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days
Investigators for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are on the scene and asked that anyone with information related to the incident call their office at 312-746-3609

What could be better than hearing the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra play some of the spookiest pieces of classical music less than a week before Halloween

The concert began with a unique performance of the national anthem

The orchestra then commenced with some of the creepiest tunes of Bach
The costume contest was held at the intermission
More than 230 audience members enjoyed the concert altogether
with several South River High School students joining the orchestra for some performances as well
The LSO’s next concert will be ‘Movie Music Live,’ to be held Saturday

Director of Hammond-Harwood House to retire
Fairfax County police have charged a 31-year-old Falls Church man with the Feb. 21 fatal shooting in Centreville
Officers said Richard Kenneth Pearson IV went to the townhome in the London Towne area on the night that Amaru Amin Shabazz, 37, was killed
Police said Pearson was there to visit someone who lived there
“Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting but have determined Pearson IV shot Shabazz multiple times inside the home then left prior to officers arriving,” an FCPD news release said today (Monday)
Police charged Pearson on Thursday (March 3) with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
He was arrested Friday and taken to the Adult Detention Center and held without bond
Police officers responded around 10 p.m. on Feb. 21 to a townhouse in the 14800 block of Bodley Square and found Shabazz inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds, the department said in a news release
Detectives ask anyone who may have information about the shooting to call 703-246-7800, option 2, or to submit tips anonymously, call Crime Solvers by phone – 1-866-411-TIPS (866-411-8477), by text – Type “FCCS” plus tip to 847411, and by web at fairfaxcrimesolvers.org
Fairfax County drivers should be prepared to slow down if they don't want to risk getting ticketed
The county is starting a speed camera pilot program near eight different schools
The school zones where drivers can expect the newphoto-monitoring devices are:
Fairfax County officials said drivers will be given a 30-day grace period to start out
with no fines in effect and just a warning if the camera captures them speeding during that first month
"The reason why we're doing this program is just for safety," said Captain Alan Hanson
commander of the Fairfax County Police Department's traffic division
particularly in school zones where you have the most vulnerable people out walking."
7News met Captain Hanson on Silverbrook Road
where two of the new speed cameras have been installed
That stretch of Silverbrook road runs adjacent to several schools
"We reached out to Fairfax County Public Schools to ask what input they might have on where they would like the cameras," Hanson explained
when asked how the school zone speed camera locations were chosen for this pilot program
"We also get a lot of community complaints about speed at different schools
and so we chose them based off of that as well."
the county also conducted speed surveys in school zones
and found thousands of drivers exceeded the speed limit by more than 10 mph during the sample period
"The great thing about having these cameras is that
we can't put an officer at every school
but having the ability to have these cameras out here as a traffic calming measures
it increases our ability to address speeding problems and hopefully save lives," Hanson said
He added that the speed cameras will be active when school zone lights are flashing
both in the mornings as students are coming into school and in the afternoons during dismissal
After the initial 30-day grace period with warnings only
drivers will then face citations with fines of up to $100 based on how fast they're going
"There are no points associated with it
and no impact to your insurance," Hanson said
"It's a civil penalty much in the same way that a parking ticket would be a civil penalty."

“The goal of the Speed Camera Pilot program is to improve the safety of our roads
protect pedestrians and motorists and prevent accidents,"Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay said in a statement
in coordination with the Police Department and Fairfax County Public Schools
is a critical tool to deter dangerous behavior and ultimately save lives
As you drive in our neighborhoods and school zones—the message is clear
Fairfax CountyChief of Police Kevin Davis shared a similar message
7News spoke to some parents and neighbors on Silverbrook Road who said the new speed cameras are a welcome sight
"I have an 11th grader at South County High School," said Kamini Patel
"And when I saw [the camera] it gave me some peace
that now the drivers will be careful with their speed and looking out for the kids
just on the other side of the entrance to the high school
So I think the speed camera will help"
Some people might be wondering why a speed camera has not yet been installed on Blake Lane, near Oakton High School in Vienna, the site of a deadly crash that killed two students in June of 2022
Captain Hanson said that location is absolutely on the police department's radar
and they hope to have a speed camera added there soon
is because Blake Lane is not yet officially designated as a school zone
"So we've been working towards that
the county and Fairfax County Public Schools have been working hard toward establishing that as a school zone," he said
adding that both the state and county departments of transportation are also involved in that process
but we expect it in the not too distant future."
The school zone designation is needed because a Virginia law passed in 2020 allows speed cameras only in school zones and work zones
Fairfax County said these are five important details that drivers should know about the newly installed cameras:
Hanson said a work zone speed camera at Route 28 near Old Mill Road is also in the works
"Once lights have been placed to notify people when the work zone is active
then we'll transfer a camera out to Route 28," he said
If the six-month pilot program is successful
the county's plan is to further expand it in two phases:
"We anticipate that prior to the end of the pilot program
we'll have an understanding of how it's going and if it's working the way we believe it's going to work
we will roll right into the expanded program," he said

(Michael O'Connell/Patch)CENTREVILLE
VA — School Age Child Care (SACC) programs will be returning to all public schools in Fairfax County when the academic school year begins on Aug
The county-run program provides care for students before and after school
"With the school board's decision to return kids to the classroom this fall
we will return with 142 SACC locations throughout Fairfax County
including two new SACC centers at Clearview Elementary School and McNair Upper Elementary School," Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay said
during a Thursday morning news conference at London Towne Elementary in Centreville
McKay said he recognized the anxiety many families were experiencing about whether child care would be available when schools opened
"We all are making plans for our kids this upcoming school year," he said
"We're making important decisions about when they will return to school and our parents and our families need to know that Fairfax County and our school system has put together a safe program for kids to come to SACC throughout Fairfax County."
it operates in full partnership with the school system
McKay called that partnership vital to the program's successful operation during the pandemic
the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the importance of child care during the first decade of life for young children and their families," he said
the availability of child care services was altered in communities throughout the country
There was anxiety not knowing if families who needed it most would have access to safe and regular child care."
McKay was joined Thursday by County Executive Bryan Hill
the director of the county's Office for Children
London Towne Elementary was chosen as the site for their news conference because it is one of the 31 schools offering the Camp Fairfax summer program
"I'm proud to say that our Camp Fairfax program here has averaged 90 percent daily enrollment," McKay said
"And we could not have done that without the work of a lot of county staff
inviting environments for our young people today."
As of Wednesday afternoon, 76 percent of Fairfax County residents 18 and older have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 69.4 percent have been fully vaccinated
Since the COVID-19 vaccine is now only available to people 12 and older
many school-age children are at greater risk for catching the virus
FCPS does not currently require teachers and school staff to get vaccinated
but Pekarsky said a large percentage of them sought out the vaccine when it was made available to them
"We were lucky in the school system that our teachers and staff were actually prioritized in the spring and offered the vaccines and we saw a very large number of who took advantage of that," she said
I believe the number was over 90 percent."
At Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting, McKay introduced a board matter tasking the county executive to explore the possibility of mandating vaccinations for all county employees
"We know that the CDC has updated mask guidance for the country
and we're following that closely to make sure that we are doing everything we can to message to our public the importance of protecting each other and making sure that SACC centers like the one that will be in this school
like the program that is being run safely now
