The Lone Tree Lions came away with the girls’ track and field team championship in the Class B division Thursday at the Ekstrand Relays in Wayland, finishing with a score of 108 points that was 18 more than the second-place Hillcrest Academy Ravens.
Lone Tree raced to victory behind their relay teams. The quartet of sophomore Addison McCullough, junior Ava Christofferson and seniors Vivian Zaruba and Rylee Shield won the Class B championship in the 4-by-100-meters with a time that was one-one hundredth shy of 52 seconds flat.
That same group won the 4-by-200 in one minute 49 seconds and the sprint medley in almost 1:53. Meanwhile, the team of junior Dalanie Graap, sophomore Abby Zaruba and freshman Addyson Eiben and Evenlyn Mueller were the champions of the 4-by-800, clocking in at 12:04.
Shield also won the 400-meter dash for the Lions in a few ticks over a minute flat, while Christofferson leaped 16 feet eight inches to win the long jump and senior Hayden Yoder had the top shot put toss of over 33 feet five inches. Vivian Zaruba was third in the 200 for Lone Tree, which also finished runner-up in the distance medley and third in the 4-by-400.
Hillcrest Academy finished second in team scoring thanks in part to junior Rya Scott, who was the 200-meter champ in 27.22 seconds and took third in both the 400 and the long jump.
Sophomore Marie Yoder won the 3,200 meters for the Ravens by clocking in at nearly 11-and-a-half minutes. Yoder was also second in the 1,500, while junior Stavia Miller took third in the 100 and the 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relays also won silver for Hillcrest.
Bren Graber was the Class B champion of the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:10 for the hosting WACO Warriors. The freshman also ran a leg on WACO’s winning shuttle hurdles relay, joining senior Ally Rinner and sophomores Madelyn Farmer and Drew Graber for a time of 1:14.
The distance medley team of sophomore Natalie Wagler and freshmen Josie Dykstra, Taelyn Egli and Trinity Dean were the champions in 4:49, while Dykstra took second in the 400-meter hurdles, as did Bren Graber in the high jump, sophomore Carlee Lunsford in the 800 and the Warriors’ 4-by-400 relay.
Ellie Yates led the Sigourney Savages with a victory in the 1,500, posting a time of 5:26, and the junior was also second in the 3,000. Junior Addison Yates was third in both those races, while senior Josephine Moore took second in the shot put and third in the discus for the Savages.
Senior Josie Nelson picked up another victory for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 16.38 seconds. Freshman Kynlee Buffington was the 100-meter winner in 13.32 seconds and also finished second in the long jump, while WMU’s sprint medley team brought home an additional silver medal.
The Highland Huskies got a second-place finish from Kamryn Fink in the open 100 and fellow freshman Maiya Singbeil in the 100 hurdles. Junior Brena Hazelett was runner-up in that race, as was freshman Grace Bombei in the 800 and Highland’s 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relays, as well as the Huskies’ sprint medley.
The Keota girls took part in the Arrow Relays on Thursday at Wapello and were led by a second-place finish in the 4-by-200 and the sprint medley, while junior Olivia Lyle was third in the open 200 for the Eagles.
South Metro Fire Rescue reports the vehicle drove off the overpass onto the tracks
One person is dead and parts of several Regional Transportation District rail lines are out of service after a driver drove a vehicle off a highway ramp and collided with a light rail train early Tuesday morning
The crash happened near the C-470 and Interstate 25 interchange in Lone Tree
“One operator and one passenger were on the train at the time of the crash and are uninjured. One confirmed fatality of an occupant of the vehicle,” South Metro Fire Rescue said in an early morning update.
Traffic appears to be moving normally through the area as of late Tuesday morning. The southern sections of RTD’s E and R lines, however, are both suspended
A light rail operator struck the vehicle at about 1:15 a.m.
“The light rail train was moved from the accident site earlier this morning
and crews were able to remove the non-RTD vehicle from the light rail alignment at approximately 9:30 a.m.,” the release said
“Prior to a full resumption of light rail services
RTD Maintenance of Way staff will need to inspect the track infrastructure to ensure it is safe for operations.”
A structural engineer is also assessing a retaining wall that runs along the track

DENVER BRONCOS
BY JAKE SHAPIRO
New stadium talk is all the rage around the Denver metro
and Lone Tree is solidifying their case to be the future home of the Broncos
In a Friday report from the Denver Gazette
the paper detailed that Lone Tree officials this weekend audibled a possible site location in what is already designated to be a large-scale development in RidgeGate East that is already planned to be a big development
“We’re continuing our diligence, it’s complex; we haven’t ruled anything out,” Broncos owner Greg Penner said earlier this week
We don’t have a set timetable for making a decision
We have a lease that ends at a certain date
but it could be something that happens earlier than that (date
or we could be in our current stadium for longer
We don’t have a set timetable at this point.”
The Broncos are focused on a project that would best prepare their NFL team for the next 50 years. They’ve been eyeing a possible move from downtown to Lone Tree for months
the city shared the RidgeGate East land on the southeast corner of Interstate 25 and Lincoln Avenue as a possibility
They highlight that it was already approved in 2018 to house a 440-acre development
“We are always open to ideas that support the vision of the Lone Tree City Center as a destination urban center
first envisioned when voters annexed the area into Lone Tree,” Melissa Gallegos
said in the statement when asked to respond to the Gazette about the Broncos interest in Lone Tree
“The city and the property owner have worked for decades to ready the site for regional destination development
including transit investments into the heart of the City Center,” Gallegos said to the paper
The land is owned by Coventry Development Corp.
which also owns land that is supposed to be the Lone Tree City Center
There is already infrastructure in place at the site
Lone Tree has invested hundreds of millions in the area that they annexed back in 2000 between highway improvements and making sure the RTD light rail reached the location
The Broncos’ lease on Empower Field at Mile High expires in 2030, and the team is focused on not rushing into a new building but instead setting up the best situation possible for the next 50 years. Could that spot be Aurora? Colorado’s third-largest city is close to one of the country’s biggest airports and has other benefits
Aurora didn’t give as much hope in their comments in the same story
One interesting aspect being overlooked is how much the current site has been overlooked by the public but continues to get mentioned by ownership
The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves secured another team victory in a boys’ golf dual against the Lone Tree Lions yesterday at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside
WMU finished with a combined team score of 164 strokes
Justin Knipfer was the meet medalist and led Winfield-Mount Union by shooting a three-over-par round of 39
The sophomore bounced back from a triple-bogey on the first hole with birdie on the second and an eagle on the sixth to go with three other bogeys
Sophomore Cody Milks was only stroke back of Knipfer
finishing with two eagles to make up for two triples
Junior Konner Kinneberg added a 41 for the Wolves
while juniors Max Edwards and Grant Anderson each carded a 44 and junior Nick Sparrow had a 54
Senior Jack Patterson led Lone Tree with an eight-over 44
making eagle on the sixth and birdie on the fifth
Junior Carter Schott added a 52 for the Lions
while sophomore Owen Eden finished with a 56
There was no team competition on the girls’ side
but Winfield-Mount Union was paced by an 11-over 47 from freshman Ashlyn Bender and got a 58 from junior Ella Kann
Sophomore Rylie Viers was the lone girls’ golfer for Lone Tree and finished with a 73
The Lone Tree Lion track and field teams would put together another strong showing last night at the Belle Plaine Co-Ed Invitational
The Lone Tree girls were second in the team standings with a score of 116 points
51 behind the winners from English Valleys
The relay teams would again lead the way for the Lions
as they were the 4-by-100-meter champions with a time of 53.29 seconds and the winners of the 4-by-200 in a tick under one minute 53 seconds
Lone Tree’s victory in the sprint medley came in 1:53
and they would also finish in second place in the distance medley
Rylee Shield was one of the individual winners for the Lions
taking the title in the 400-meter dash with a time of just under 1:02
Fellow senior Hayden Yoder would win the discus throw with a top toss of 112 feet three inches
as was junior Ava Christofferson in the long jump and senior Vivian Zaruba in the 200 meters
The Lone Tree boys finished fourth as a team at Belle Plaine
but their 4-by-100 relay would claim victory by clocking in at 46.81 seconds
Junior Dom Garcia was the runner-up in the 200 for the Lions
as was sophomore Brock Nebergall in the 800
while junior Emmett Burke and freshman Trenton McKean took third in the 400 and 1,600

The Denver Broncos don’t yet know how or when they will address their quarter-century-old stadium downtown but ownership made it clear once again on Wednesday that the franchise continues to look at options for building a new home
they’ve let it be known they’re still considering the latter option as well
which means we could be getting close to the team getting very serious about this possible project
“I’m sure you all have seen some rumors recently, we’re continuing to do our diligence, it’s a complex question and decision with what we decide to do,” Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said at Wednesday’s season-closing news conference
“We haven’t ruled out anything at this point
We’re still looking at options on the current site
we’ve visited other places like Lone Tree
We still have more steps to take there.”
The news here might be that Penner confirms the team’s interest in Denver’s south suburb of Lone Tree
seemingly opening up many of the Mile High City’s suburbs as options for the team
where the Broncos have always played as the old Mile High Stadium is part of the parking lot for the current joint
sets up the possible move and development of a new area of the city
While we’re no closer today to anything tangible on a Broncos stadium it does seem like the team is continuing to work on ideas for what will be a generational construction project
Majority of parcel that’s remained vacant for 20 years finally being developed
Starting their regular session an unusual 55 minutes late
and approved the new Lone Tree Retail Project on an unusual 3-2 split vote with Councilmembers Don Freitas and Monica Wilson joining in opposition
The meeting began with a closed-door meeting at 6:00 p.m
before the regular session began at 7:55 p.m
here we are ready to go,” Mayor Ron Bernal explained for the delay
Acting City Attorney Derek Cole reported out from Closed Session saying
Second was conference with real property negotiators on the Sycamore Square police substation
The council gave direction to its negotiators
was a “Qui Tam” including several agencies
Lone Tree Retail Project Approved on Split VoteThe Lone Tree Retail project on three parcels totaling 3.22 acres next to the In-Shape Fitness health club at 4099 Lone Tree Way
is part of an 18-acre Master Planned Development
but the rest of the site has remained undeveloped
Following council discussion with both Freitas and Wilson expressing their concerns that the project didn’t fit with what they had envisioned for the site
the Council voted 3-2 on Tuesday night to approve the project
the new project consists of three buildings: a car wash
fast casual restaurant (aka Quick Service Restaurant or QSR)
fast casual restaurant and retail building
along with associated site improvements Tenants with signed leases include Mister Car Wash
It will also include an adjacent multi-family residential project on the nine acres behind the project
former CEO and owner of In-Shape Health Clubs
said the larger restaurants suggested by members of the public won’t work at that location as those types of restaurants want freeway visibility
At the March 11th meeting
he said they also had spoken with multiple grocery stores
“The rear nine acres are in contract with a developer
to build a residential complex,” Rothbard said
“They’re ready to go…in Q3 of this year.” His father and partner on the project
The son said they’re hoping to be under construction with the retail project by this August and have it completed by next July
Rothbard also mentioned that the Chipotle will have a drive-through for picking up orders made on the app
The Council then heard opposition from three members of the community during their March 11th meeting
with the main concerns being the fast food uses
no grocery store and no affordable housing included in the adjacent multi-family residential development
Brian Heron of Fresno-based Commercial Retail Associates
who has been working on the property with the Rothbards since 2005
we had agreed to get those 7,000 square-foot restaurants
By and large those are obsolete concepts and…not willing to come to this location
The brands are “in demand in your community,” he added
“We have tried getting all the grocers,” Heron continued
“We’ve spoken to Sprouts…to Nugget…from big to small
We went into the next phase of that development
Freitas spoke first saying he was “very surprised”
very grandiose view of this particular development…and I embraced it,” he continued
“I’m conflicted…because the world has changed
and we all are aware of that.”Mayor Pro Tem and District 2 Councilman Louie Rocha asked
“Are we really in a position that we can turn away business and revenue?”
District 1 Councilwoman Tamisha Torres-Walker then said
“What the opponents are saying is ‘we don’t want this
bring us something else.’ But this is not our property
We’re talking to the actual owners who are trying to develop it because they lost money on it for 20 years for not being able to get a project completed.”
“My recommendation was to sell it to someone who wanted to develop more housing.”
but the way they’re oriented.” He asked if staff if there was an attempt to place the drive-through on the back side of the building
When you’re looking at 30 cars sitting up there with marginal landscaping
that’s a whole different looking project to me
City of Antioch Associate Planner Nathan Tinclair responded saying
“One of the things we have to look at on this parcel is it’s already partially developed
There’s already this main entrance drive with the main
kind of circle with the access points to the adjacent parcels.”
He then shared his concerns with the project being presented to council “with a couple days’ notice to look at it on really tiny sets of plans” as well as landscaping
the council voted 5-0 to continue the item until their meeting last night
A noise study was completed to confirm that noise generated by the new project does not create a significant impact
in excess of the noise levels permitted in the City of Antioch General Plan
the Planning Commission at their February 19
with two members (Robert Martin and Christian Hills) absent and one vacancy
voted 4-0 to approve the Addendum to the Adopted Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration
and Commissioners Jennifer Perez and Cortney Jones
The IS/MND was approved by the City Council in 2005
But the motion to adopt the Final Development Plan
Use Permit and Design Review failed on a 3-1 vote
as motions require four “yes” votes to pass
Rocha and Torres-Walker approved all four requirements for development of the project

Both the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Lone Tree Lions hit the road Thursday to compete in track and field meets
Winfield-Mount Union finished second in the boys’ team scoring at the Falcon Co-Ed Relays in West Burlington
thanks in part to two individual victories from Kohlby Newsom
Newsom won the 400-meter dash in 51.19 seconds and had the top time of four minutes 37 seconds in the 1,600 meters
Fellow senior Cooper Buffington picked up a win in the discus with a top toss of 126 feet three inches
while the Wolves won the sprint medley relay in one minute 44 seconds and were champions in the shuttle hurdles in 1:09
Buffington would finish second in the shot put
as would junior Gavin Prior in the 100-meter hurdles and freshman Brayden Cline in the two-mile
while WMU also won a silver medal in the distance medley
Third place went to seniors Levi Walter and Lane Genkinger for the 400 hurdles and open 200
The Winfield-Mount Union girls were led by Kynlee Buffington
who again won the 200 meters with a time that was just a tick under 28 seconds flat
The freshman also claimed the crown in the long jump by hitting 16 feet five-and-a-half inches
Senior Josie Nelson also won for the Wolves in the 100 hurdles in almost 17 seconds and was runner-up in the 400 hurdles
while Buffington was third in the open 400
Lone Tree took part in the Chad Gates Co-Ed Invitational at West Branch and finished fifth in the girls’ team scoring
The Lions were the champions of the 4-by-200 meters in 1:51 and won the sprint medley in 1:54
Lions senior Hayden Yoder brought home bronze medals in the shot put and discus
as did junior Jazmine Nino in the 800 meters
Junior Domonic Garcia led the Lone Tree boys with a victory in the 200
— Police in Lone Tree are investigating whether the discovery of a suspicious camera in the Heritage Hills neighborhood is connected to a series of burglaries targeting Asian residents that occurred last year
police got a call from a resident who reported a suspicious camera in a neighbor’s yard pointing directly at another home in the Heritage Hills neighborhood
No other hidden cameras were found by police after they canvassed the neighborhood and spoke to neighbors in the area
a spokesperson for the department said they were working with several other law enforcement agencies around the metro as they believe this incident could be connected a series of burglaries in 2024 that targeted Asian residents
Officials said no new burglaries have been reported in Lone Tree since that trend started
Neither homeowner (the property owner on which the camera was located or the property the camera was pointing at) was aware the camera was there
a police department spokesperson told Denver7
Anyone with information on this case, please contact Detective Lori Mohr at 720-509-1225 or at Lori.Mohr@cityoflonetree.com.

— A 25% tariff on global aluminum and steel is now in effect as President Trump's march toward a potentially destructive trade war continues
despite warnings from economist that the move could backfire
In anticipation of the imposed tariff on aluminum and steel goods
a Lonetree developer building an affordable housing complex
chose to try and get ahead of the price increase of certain products
"We started preparing for it and asking our contractors to buy the materials as soon as they can," Koebel said
"We asked our contractor to go out and purchase the 100 water heaters for this building so that we wouldn't be impacted by a price increase later."
Koebel told Denver7 water heaters weren't the only item he chose to buy ahead of the imposed tariffs
Items like plumbing fixtures and other appliances were also on that list
and don't come without extra incurred costs
buying those products sooner is not cost-free for us
which means we have more interest on our construction loan associated with the purchase
So even if the tariffs would not to be implemented
we would already have incurred costs trying to mitigate their effect," he added
Koebel isn't the only local business owner dealing with such additional costs
the President and CEO of the Brewers Association
local brewers in Colorado will also potentially have similar headaches
"I think the biggest concern is just around pricing," Watson said
"Pretty much everything that goes into making beer has gotten more expensive the last few years
so this is something that's added on top of all the inflation we've seen in the last few years
and it's gonna create a difficult choice for brewers
Do they eat that and see their margins go down
or do they pass it on to customers and risk loss sales?" Watson questioned
In Colorado, where breweries have become a staple, Watson believes local brewers will incur additional costs
"They're going to have to look at their margins and whether they can absorb this or not
but we do anticipate it would lead to some price increase overall
as some brewers pass that cost on to customers," Watson said
officials at the World Trade Center Denver said they're fielding calls from business owners concerned about imposed tariffs
"It's a huge concern for a lot of businesses
especially those that are using multiple components into their finished good," said Karen Gerwitz
the president and CEO of the World Trade Center Denver
Gerwitz added she's also concerned for businesses operating out of Colorado that work directly with aluminum products
"Ball Corporation makes a lot of aluminum products
so Ball Corporation will certainly be affected."
pushing along and trying to make the best of the situation while also working on completing the affordable housing project is what he's focused on
"We really would love a robust onshore manufacturing industry," he said
The interim pain associated with it is acute for us
and the on the other it was heartbreak last night at Sigourney High School
as the #14 in Class 1A Sigourney Savage girls collected a regional semifinal victory over the Lone Tree Lady Lions in an instant classic on KCII
The game started much like it did Tuesday night in the regional quarterfinal round for Sigourney
getting out to a 22-6 lead after the first frame to take the early command of the contest
preserving the potent lead for the Savages heading into the second half
the Lady Lions were awakened in the locker room
as Lone Tree outscored Sigourney by nine points heading into the fourth and final quarter when it all counted
the Savages locked themselves into a blow-for-blow scoring frenzy with the Lady Lions
with Lone Tree continuing to erase the gap little by little
Lone Tree would get the gap as close as three points
but would not be able to muster enough to come all the way back
falling to the #14 Savages by a final of 64-60
sending Sigourney to the Class 1A Region 7 final next Wednesday
Sigourney pulled down 40 total rebounds in the game
Sigourney was led by Josephine Moore and Brynn Clarahan
who combined for 43 total points in the victory
The pair took over the fourth frame for the Savages
combining for 17 in just the final eight minutes alone
Moore earned Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game honors in the win
while Clarahan joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about her second career postseason win
“My team doesn’t want to be done,” Clarahan said
Clarahan also took time to preview Wednesday’s regional final
“We’re just going to come out with all the energy we can get
so we’re just going to put it all on the floor.”
Sigourney Head Coach Kaylee Weber joined KCII Sports postgame to go over what allowed her team to capture the narrow home victory
“I’m just so proud of them [my players],” Weber said
They played defense in the last three minutes
and that’s what sealed the deal.”
Lone Tree was led by Finley Jacque’s 19 points
Sigourney is now one victory away from qualifying for their first state tournament since 1992
Their opponent in the regional final will be the Springville Orioles
and will say goodbye to seniors Rylee Shield
Lone Tree Brewing presents a new spring seasonal
freshly canned and available in Colorado and Kansas
Honey Lager hit shelves the first week of April
and lager lovers can find it on tap at both of the brewery’s South Metro Denver locations while supplies last
Lone Tree selects its seasonal cans based on popularity in the tasting rooms
making Honey Lager an obvious choice for the 2025 spring offering
and Munich malts comprise the grist of this Golden Lager
with additions of Jasmine rice and Colorado honey that create sweet malt aroma and subtle honey flavor
Cascade and Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops balance this lager’s sweeter side
“This beer signals a fresh start to the spring season for us,” says Lone Tree Director of Brewhouse Operations Jerry Siote
“It’s a delicate dance when incorporating the local honey at the right stage of fermentation to get a finished product that’s not overly sweet
but still carries the essential aroma and flavor qualities of the honey itself
The Jasmine rice comprises more than 30% of the overall grain bill
vanilla-like profile that increases drinkability of the beer
and it’s something we’ve been excited to share with the market for a while now.”
Honey Lager will be available on draft at Lone Tree Brewing’s tasting rooms in Lone Tree and Parker
as well as packaged in cans and kegs for the Colorado and Kansas markets
Ask for it on draft at your favorite bars in Colorado
and look for canned 12oz 6 packs while supplies last this spring season.
