site, barely a week after a developer’s plans to erect an indoor ski complex skidded to a halt due to financial reasons a Delaware-based subsidary of a Canadian organics processing company The proposed facility could divert an estimated 60% of waste from the landfill according to the Envision Waste Services proposal the mixed waste processing facility (MWPF) would occupy 16 acres of a closed portion of the landfill — separate from the site tied to the ski complex project “Carbon emissions will be virtually eliminated as our system will remove the organic fraction that would otherwise decompose in the landfill which creates methane and carbon dioxide both of which are harmful greenhouse gases,” Envision Waste Services wrote Anaergia said its project would generate “renewable” natural gas that could be added to the county’s gas grid providing “carbon negative” fuel and electric power for the transportation network The Fairfax County Department of Procurement and Material Management formally notified prospective ski complex developer Alpine-X last month that it was concluding its review of the project with an interim agreement set to expire on Dec the project has not moved forward for additional review during the Interim Agreement window,” Lee Ann Pender wrote in the Dec The 450,000-square-foot ski complex, dubbed Peak Fairfax, would’ve erected a 1,700-foot indoor ski slope — the largest in the country — as well as a tubing slope The project initially carried a price tag upwards of $400 million Alpine-X says financial constraints haven’t forced it to completely abandon its vision “We are taking extra time to deal with the dramatic increases in construction cost and interest rates,” Alpine-X CEO John Emery told FFXnow last month “Since we build projects with a long-term view we make every effort to ensure the future financial success of a project prior to breaking ground.” Both the ski resort and the recycling facility could be implemented at the I-95 landfill some of which are still active as a landfill neither project is a guarantee at this point The county’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is still reviewing the waste processing facility proposals Other unsolicited bids for reuse projects for the landfill are also being accepted Image via Fairfax County New details regarding the March arrest of Alaskan Bush People star Rain Brown and her husband, Josiah Lorton, reveal that the couple allegedly stole more than $170,000 in cash wine and gold coins from a family member of Josiah As The Ashley told you last month, the 22-year-old former reality star was arrested in Okanogan, Washington and charged with burglary in the first degree malicious mischief in the first degree and criminal trespassing in the second degree except for the criminal trespassing charge A post shared by Rain Lorton (@heroofkirrkwell) The list of allegedly stolen items includes $75,000 in cash, $85,000 in gold coins, $8,000 in wine and champagne, a pistol valued at $2,500, a revolver valued at $650, a second pistol valued at $450 and a bong for marijuana valued at $250. Jason also noted that there was damaged glass and a broken generator on his property; he valued the alleged “vandalism” at $5,000. Jason claimed that a neighbor of his has video footage of Josiah and Rain at the residence where the allegedly burglary occurred. He also informed police that his nephew was the only person with whom he had shared the location of the missing valuables and that he feared Josiah was only at his property to steal the items.  “Jason went on to explain that even though he does not have a positive opinion of [Rain], he believes that even she would not be capable of stealing from him unless Josiah told her about the location of said valuables,” the report stated.  As The Ashley previously told you, Rain took to social media last month seemingly proclaiming her innocence in the aftermath of her arrest.  A post shared by Rain Lorton (@heroofkirrkwell) “It hurts my heart that my rainbows would choose to believe the lies that my old manager who stole $43,000 from me and abused me instead of maybe thinking ‘Oh no who is saying this about Rain?’ Not ‘Wow what a waste,’” she wrote “With all this said I hope y’all will stick around to hear my side of the story,” she continued This is not the only unsavory thing that Rain and Josiah have recently been accused of. Last month, Rain’s older brother Noah called the police to ask for a welfare check on Rain and their mother, Ami who has reportedly been living with Rain and Josiah Noah told cops he had heard that Ami was now taking meth given to her by Josiah and Rain He went on to claim that Ami, who was hospitalized in February and placed in a medically induced coma Noah alleged that his mother wasn’t taking her medication because Rain “is not allowing her” to do so A post shared by Amora L. Brown (@amibrownwolfpackmama) He also claimed that Rain’s husband was in possession of guns which he is allegedly not permitted to own.  Police reportedly contacted Noah on April 8 to notify him that there had been an attempt to contact Ami and that Ami “might be” with Rain and Josiah Noah claimed that Rain “struggles to keep up with taking her medication and thinks that anybody who tries to force her to take it is the devil.”  “Noah continued to explain that Josiah is known to always be armed,” the police officer wrote in the court documents Noah advised me that his mother and [Rain] refer to Josiah Lorton as the next ‘Messiah,’ which extremely worried Noah.” Noah also accused Rain of stealing a pistol from him.  An officer attempted to do the welfare check on Ami; however he was only able to deduce that Ami “might be” with Rain and Josiah.  RELATED STORY: ‘Alaskan Bush People’ Star Noah Brown Calls Cops to Request Welfare Check on Mom Ami; Claims She’s “Taking Meth” & “Deteriorating” Yellowfarmstudios.com (7News) — The man responsible for a bank robbery in Lorton is still at large according to Major Crimes Bureau of Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) FCPD officers arrived at Truist Bank on the 9400 block of Richmond Highway to investigate a bank robbery A man entered the bank and gave a note to the teller implying he had a weapon but the man ran away before officers arrived Anyone with information on this case is asked to call FCPD Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800 The exclusive rights to bring an indoor ski resort to Lorton will soon expire for one developer Alpine-X, which is looking to build a 450,000-square-foot complex on a closed section of the I-95 landfill, will continue to pursue the “Fairfax Peak” project after the rights end on Dec The company intends to take a closer look at the financial state of the project before moving forward “We are taking extra time to deal with the dramatic increases in construction cost and interest rates,” Emery said “Since we build projects with a long-term view we make every effort to ensure the future financial success of a project prior to breaking ground.” The project now has an estimated cost of $400 million to $500 million, the Washington Business Journal reported The proposed project targets an unused portion of the 489-acre landfill site to build the largest indoor ski slope in the country The company says it’s “expected to be the first facility of its kind in the U.S.” Fairfax County would grant a “sufficiently long” ground lease for the property while Alpine-X would be responsible for developing the complex the ski slope would be accompanied by a tubing slope and a snow field where visitors can “build snowmen play in snow and engage in other snow activities.” A hotel featuring more than 100 rooms would also be housed on the property as would multiple drinking and dining establishments and select outdoor recreation facilities Construction of the initial phases of the project would take between three and four years to complete based on certain variables Alpine-X once hoped that the resort could begin operations in late 2024 but “market changes” and rising construction costs due to inflation have kept the company from moving forward with the project so far Chief Financial Officer Jim Calder told FFXnow last year “We have discussed this extensively with the County who without fail have been and remain extremely supportive and will proceed in a timely fashion as the development process and financial requirements allow,” Emery said county officials have considered establishing a body that would oversee similar recreational projects in the future several groups have expressed interest in partnering with Fairfax County to establish entertainment and other recreational facilities,” the approved board matter said Fairfax County has specifically defined formal mechanisms to explore public-private partnerships that benefit residents and ensure adequate public involvement in project planning and community use of new facilities.” The office of Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw didn’t provide an update on the subject by press time Fairfax County Planning Commission members will try again next month to find the appropriate level of residential development on a series of parcels on Ox Road (Route 123) in the Lorton area A developer — L&F Laurel Highlands LLC — has proposed building almost two dozen new single-family houses on eight acres of mostly vacant land at 9224 9300 and 9304 Ox Road near the intersection with Hooes Road The development will require an increase in the site’s allowed density from at most 0.5 dwelling units per acre to up to three units per acre — a change that some local residents and planning commissioners say might be too intense for the Pohick Planning District As a result, the commission voted after a public hearing on Wednesday (Jan 29) to defer a final recommendation on the proposed comprehensive plan amendment until Feb “We’ll be rolling up our sleeves to come up with a finished product,” Mount Vernon District Commissioner Walter Clarke said “Some language may need to be tweaked.” With a rezoning application submitted last year the developer seeks to construct between 16 and 23 single-family homes on the combined parcel That level of density would be on par with the nearby John Leary subdivision but higher than other residential areas nearby The proposal was downsized from an initial concept that envisioned up to 70 townhomes but residents nonetheless lined up at the planning commission public hearing to voice criticisms of the project said some of those arguments were persuasive “The community has a point about the compatibility,” he said Carter also said the impact of increased levels of development in the southeastern portion of Fairfax County “bothers me a lot.” He pushed for a plan allowing one to two units per acre on the site Commission members made an effort to scale back the allowable development intensity before ultimately deciding to defer action A Board of Supervisors public hearing on the application currently is slated for March 4 If the comprehensive plan amendment ultimately is approved by supervisors the developer is expected to submit a new rezoning application “If we make it to the rezoning process we will come out with a project the community will be supportive of,” Clarke predicted While the site isn’t subject to the county’s affordable housing requirements, the developer has proposed a monetary contribution to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund pedestrian and bicyclist upgrades and tree preservation efforts Already have an account? explicit content on social media Jose Alejandro Belmonte Cardozo, who pleaded guilty in November to one count of transporting child pornography, was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison yesterday (Tuesday) by a judge in the U.S District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia The 31-year-old Belmonte Cardozo collected more than 1,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) across five different devices many of which were sent via Snapchat and saved locally which was collected over three years until Belmonte Cardozo’s arrest in May 2024 was discovered after he went through customs inspection at Dulles International Airport Belmonte Cardozo voluntarily provided the passcodes for his two cell phones to Customs and Border Protection agents who discovered multiple sexually explicit videos “When I escorted Belmonte out of Dulles he made a spontaneous statement that he was sorry for what he had on his phone and that we had to look at ‘that stuff’ on his iPhone,” Homeland Security special agent David Shuffelton wrote Belmonte used one Snapchat account to catfish two 15-year-old girls He then apparently recorded the sexually explicit content on his second phone Belmonte also convinced minors to create and send CSAM in exchange for admission to a phony group chat that he claimed to run During an interview with federal officials Belmonte claimed that the interactions helped him process his grandfather’s death “Belmonte said meeting people on Snapchat has helped him cope,” Shuffelton wrote “He acknowledged having ‘these things’ on his phone was a ‘mistake’ and that he was ‘sorry.'” Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application Lorton; cherished daughter of second location at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton late last month The Fairfax-based brewery, which also operates a location in Burke just south of Royal Lake Park, officially launched its new outpost at 9514 Workhouse Way on June 29, coinciding with the Workhouse Arts Center’s Independence Day fireworks event “We opened at noon and had a ton of people show up,” owner and co-founder Sam Gray told FFXnow Gray had expected to open the location last fall but he noted that the building’s historical character and age led to “unforeseen delays.” “The historical significance and building characteristics led to some hurdles not expected early in the lease process,” he said the new outpost boasts more seating than its Burke counterpart and features a full kitchen with items like flatbreads The owners also plan to brew alcohol at the Lorton location initially at one-third of its potential capacity The name Bunnyman Brewing is inspired by the local legend of the “Bunny Man,” a mysterious (and completely fictional) asylum escapee who left behind a trail of gutted rabbits and humans Adding to the myth were reported sightings in the 1970s of a person in a white bunny suit who allegedly terrorized residents in the Kings Park West neighborhood Given the Workhouse Arts Center’s history as a prison Gray saw it as the perfect place to set up shop “We love this location,” he
