Los Alamitos may not have felt like they were at much risk of losing at Long Beach Poly on Tuesday night
but the Jackrabbits were very competitive with the Griffins is a 1-0 loss
A 25th minute goal from Los Alamitos freshman Jaelyn Guidry proved to be the difference while Los Al outshot Poly 8-6 in the game
“That’s a good test and I’m getting these girls ready for playoffs
that’s the goal,” Poly first-year coach Angel Zavala said
“This is (also) going to get us ready for Wilson
1-0) will face Moore League rival Wilson next Tuesday
“Los Al has a lot of chemistry so they’re running players around and switching positions so communication was really important
especially defensively,” Poly co-captain Sydney Santos said
Santos put Los Al under some pressure by charging up the left flank from her outside midfield position in the second half
She finished the game with a team-high three shots
“The special thing about the 3-5-2 is we get more in the attack but it’s a lot more running,” Santos said of Poly’s formation
“Timing is also important and I play this formation in club so I kind of get the timing of when to go forward and when to stay back.”
Zavala had his team in a press from whistle to whistle because of their superior pace and athleticism
He said he wants the Jackrabbits to stay versatile in different formations
but stuck the press that helped the home side stay in the game
but there were some moments in this game where we did get it,” Santos said
“I think working on it a little big more will help.”
The first 10 minutes of the game were very even until Poly got on the front foot and earned a few dangerous crosses into the box
Kadence Bain came off the box to add a spark up top which led to Poly’s first and only shot on goal in the first half
“She is doing great things and stepping up when needed,” Zavala said of Bain
“She’s earning more and more minutes as we continue to go.”
Five minutes later against the run of play
Los Al found the go-ahead from Guidry controlled finish in the heart of the 18-yard box
Los Al junior central midfielder Zamorah Malinoski was the best player on the field for the rest of the half while recording a game-high four shots
Santos led the Poly charge in the second half but the Jackrabbits couldn’t find the equalizer

Los Alamitos High School’s boys basketball team is headed to the CIF finals for the first time since 2007.
The Griffins extended their winning streak to 10 games with an 82-57 victory over Los Alamitos in a CIF Division 1 semifinal Friday night in front of a standing room only crowd at Los Alamitos.

Los Alamitos will face the winner of the Santa Barbara vs. Mira Costa game which will be played Saturday. The final will be next weekend at a location to be announced.
Crean Lutheran (18-12) had its six-game winning streak snapped but had already qualified for the CIF Regionals which start the week after the CIF finals. Los Alamitos also advances.
Five Los Alamitos players scored in double figures and the Griffins pulled down 37 rebounds and displayed dominating play. Samori Guyness led the way with 19 points and Wesley Trevino scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Los Alamitos attack.
Kedric Delaney scored 15 points, Trent Minter added 13 points and Tyler Lopez scored 12 points as the Griffins were virtually unstoppable.
“I think our rebounding was the difference in the game,” said Guyness, who along with Overland College-commit Liam Gray, Cal State Dominguez Hills-commit Trevino, and Colorado School of Mines-commit Minter all surpassed the 1,000 points scored in their careers this season. “We’re a team of guards and they’re a big team, so our plan was to drive to the basket and crash the boards.”
Los Alamitos was successful driving to the basket and executed its offense flawlessly and caused Crean Lutheran issues with their pressing defense.
“It’s the first time in 18 years this school is going to the finals, and I’m so happy for these kids; they deserve it,” said Griffin Coach Nate Berger, a Los Alamitos alum. “It’s great for the program, the school and it was awesome to see the community come out and support us. They really pumped a lot of life into our team tonight.”
The game got off to a quick start and the pace was fast. The game was tied at 12-12 at the 2:15 mark of the opening quarter when Los Alamitos went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter. Guynesss scored six points during the surge and the Griffins led 23-12 after the first quarter.
Despite not scoring for a span of four minutes in the second quarter, Crean Lutheran stayed within striking range. However, two Los Alamitos free throws and a Crean Lutheran turnover in the final seconds led to an easy Griffins basket and Los Alamitos upped its lead to 40-28 at halftime.
Los Alamitos came out strong in the third quarter and scored on nine of its first 11 possessions. Delaney’s 3-pointer increased the Griffins lead to 56-38 with 2:41 left in the quarter. Lopez led Los Alamitos on a 9-0 run over the final 1:28 of the quarter and the Griffins extended their lead to 60-42 after three quarters and cruised in for the win.
“It’s amazing, it’s incredible on how I feel right now; the school hasn’t gone to the finals in a long time,” said Minter. “Words can’t describe how I feel.”
Hunter Caplan led the Saints with 20 points. Jordan Ceballos added 12 points and Caden Jones scored 10 points.
“We’ll learn from this game, and we still have basketball left this season,” said Caplan. “They played fantastic defense but I’m proud of our team. We fought to the end.”
Ceballos said the Saints defense was the difference.
“We didn’t play with the intensity we needed tonight and in the second half I could see that they wanted it more than us,” said Ceballos.
Crean Lutheran’s Matt Ciftcikara said Los Alamitos’ pressure caused the Saints trouble.
“They came out and trapped us and made us turn the ball over,” said Ciftcikara. “We didn’t execute, but we’ll take time and heal up and get ready to make a run at a state championship in a few weeks.”
Saints Coach Nate Klitzing credited Los Alamitos.
“They outplayed us tonight,” said Klitzing. “I’m disappointed but we didn’t make shots, and you have to give credit to Los Alamitos. But I ‘m still proud of what these guys did this season. If you would have told me at midseason, we would be playing in the semifinals, I would have been blown away. These guys are resilient.”
—-Crean Lutheran was attempting to reach the CIF finals for the first time since 2021 when it defeated Agoura.
—Hunter Caplan played with a slightly swollen knee and Matt Ciftcikara played with a banged-up elbow for Crean Lutheran.
—Trevino recorded his 8th double double of the season and 11th of his career.
—Los Alamitos defeated Redondo Union in the 2007 CIF finals 67-50. It was the last time the Griffins have reached the CIF finals.
—Los Alamitos reached the semifinals by defeating Vista Murrieta, Long Beach Poly and Rolling Hills Prep. Each win was by single digits while the Saints defeated San Clemente, Brentwood School and Campbell Hall to reach the semifinals.
The first horse that was infected and euthanized was Bullet Train V on Sept. 24, according to the California Horse Racing Board website. Then six more horses were euthanized Oct. 2 and 3. All were quarter horses, meaning they wouldn’t be racing at Santa Anita or Del Mar. The five who were euthanized Wednesday also were quarter horses.
There were six other deaths among Taylor’s horses reported at Lone Star Park in Texas. There are six other horses in the Taylor barn who are under quarantine but have not tested positive for the virus and will be monitored.
Sports
Trainer Heath Taylor has had to euthanize seven horses after an outbreak of EIA at his Los Alamitos barn. Three horses survive, for now.
If a horse tests positive for EIA, they can be quarantined for life or euthanized. It is costly to keep the horse limited to quarantine alive.
Taylor is considered one of the sport’s most prestigious trainers, having won almost 2,000 races from about 9,000 starts. In an interview with the Paulick Report, Taylor said he was “absolutely devastated” by the deaths.
Los Alamitos, which runs almost year-round, has had an abnormal amount of fatalities. The track also has had five musculoskeletal deaths this month.
This outbreak has put more scrutiny on horse racing in Southern California. The sport is languishing locally, with lower attendance, mutuel handle and foal crop (number of horses born).

Journalism and jockey Umberto Rispoli flash under the wire in the Los Alamitos Futurity at Los Alamitos Race Course

Gaming was the logical choice and went off as the 1-2 favorite. But bettors didn't ignore Journalism's impressive maiden score at Del Mar Nov. 17, when fellow Futurity entrants Rank and Mellencamp were among the vanquished

The full advisory issued by the CHRB follows:
“Under the supervision of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and dictated by state and federal standards
five additional horses have been euthanized at Los Alamitos after they tested positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
This follows the euthanasia of seven other EIA positive quarter horses earlier this month
All 12 horses were trained by Heath Taylor and stabled in his barn at Los Alamitos
CDFA ordered three of the Taylor horses to remain in quarantine as part of a group including those that tested positive
All three of those horses later tested positive and were among the five euthanized on Wednesday
“After EIA was detected among Taylor horses in other states as well
CDFA and United States Department of Agriculture initiated epidemiological tracing of the disease
all of Taylor's horses at Los Alamitos were tested by CDFA
Those tests identified two additional positives in the Taylor barn
The other horses tested by CDFA have tested negative but six remain in quarantine
The six are identified as “close contacts” while in another state
and CDFA is actively monitoring the situation
“All fatalities are reported on the CHRB website on a weekly basis consistent with existing statutory requirements. More information about EIA is available at equinediseasecc.org.”

Los Alamitos High School senior Sydney Forsyte has always felt a personal connection with the story of Anne Frank.
As the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors, Sydney believes Anne’s story carries a universal message of empathy and tolerance that resonates with people of all backgrounds. Now, through a collaboration with the nonprofit Anne Frank LA
Sydney is giving her high school peers the opportunity to form their own connections by bringing a new traveling exhibit to campus.
Making its first appearance in an Orange County school
the Anne Frank – A History for Today exhibit tells the story of the Holocaust and World War II through the lens of the Frank family’s experiences
Their story is illustrated across 32 movable panels
currently housed at Los Alamitos’s media center
Sydney felt moved to present the exhibit to her school after learning about it during an internship with the Freedom Writers Foundation — a Long Beach-based organization founded by educator Erin Gruwell that uses “The Diary of a Young Girl” to inspire students.
“I just really thought it was an impactful story
and I wanted to bring it to Los Alamitos so other students could connect with it the way that I did,” Sydney said.
Assistant Principal Cara Vienna said Sydney approached administrators with the idea before the school year started and wrote three different grants to secure funding for the immersive display.
we wanted to figure out how we could make it relative to what the kids were learning and ensure that as many students as possible could experience this student-driven project,” Vienna said
Despite Sydney’s initial concerns that the project might not draw enough interest
sign-ups for the exhibit filled up within minutes
Senior Maleah Fennessy was among the first students to register to volunteer as a docent
“I’ve always felt like I really connected with Anne personally,” Maleah said
“I feel like being able to tell her story was a really cool opportunity for me.”
Through Oct. 25, Los Alamitos High School students will lead tours of the exhibit for 10th graders as part of their English and world history courses.
For more information about the program, visit the Anne Frank LA website. Educators interested in bringing the Anne Frank – A History for Today exhibit to their campuses can contact the organization at annefrankla@gmail.com

Print For one shining moment
when kids went to neighborhood schools and fans came out to cheer with pride for their friends and fellow community members
It’s happening Saturday in the rare Southern Section Division 1 boys’ basketball championship game matching two public schools
These are teams with players who have stuck together for years led by coaches who value commitment and loyalty
It’s so hard to keep kids,” Los Alamitos coach Nate Berger said
“It’s great two public schools going at it in Division 1
which nobody would have predicted,” Mira Costa coach Neal Perlmutter said

The coaches have been texting each other throughout the playoffs knowing they have similar teams and similar stories
They’ve played against each other in the Ocean View tournament in recent years
Perlmutter even changed his philosophy after seeing Los Alamitos’ full-court press and conditioning program to help his own program
“I’ve always liked to press and decided to up it more and double down on our conditioning,” he said

Both schools played challenging schedules to prepare for the playoffs. Los Alamitos, in particular, experienced some tough losses. The Griffins lost to Open Division finalist Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 100-69 and lost to Redondo Union 92-75. Those games helped teach young players about what they needed to improve on for the playoffs.
It sets the stage for what should be a fun, competitive matchup, with each team employing similar tactics. At any point during the game, there are numerous candidates capable of stepping forward to contribute. That adds to the uncertainty and curiosity in trying to determine which team can finish on top.
“We say we love twos and like threes,” Perlmutter said. “Our strategy is always going to be attack the basket and get to free-throw line.”
Said Berger: “It’s going to be a good battle of coaching and kids. Whomever wins is going to deserve it.”
It’s a weekend of championships and big-time matchups.
The Southern Section Open Division boys’ and girls’ finals Saturday should be equally compelling. Notre Dame will take on Eastvale Roosevelt at 6:30 p.m. in the boys’ title game, followed by Ontario Christian playing Etiwanda at 8:30 p.m. in the girls’ final. There will be some future professional players on display in both games.
But take a moment to close your eyes and think back to the days of years ago. When you open them for Los Alamitos vs. Mira Costa, you will not be disappointed.

EIA is an incurable disease that usually results in euthanasia. Horses with EIA have that virus mostly for the rest of their life, meaning an interminable quarantine or euthanasia.
The first horse to have the condition detected was Bullet Train V, an Oklahoma bred, on Sept. 24. The 2-year-old colt was winless in two starts, neither at Los Alamitos, having finished third in a trial for the All American Futurity in Albuquerque.
The California Crown $1-million purse drew a strong field and crowd of 21,812 to Santa Anita Saturday in Arcadia
Upon notification, the horse was euthanized and nine horses run by Taylor were put in quarantine. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), as is standard, was put in charge of the situation and subsequent investigation. EIA is not confined to the U.S.; it is a problem worldwide.
The three remaining horses who were quarantined have tested negative for disease. They will remain quarantined and be re-tested in two months.
The California Crown card at Santa Anita Park
combines music and horse racing in attempt to draw new fans
According to records from the California Horse Racing Board and supplemented by The Times, Taylor has had six deaths since 2000. He also had a sudden death during training.
Los Alamitos runs a year-round quarter horse and thoroughbred meeting that is partly made up of lower level thoroughbred horses. So far, the track has had eight racing or training deaths because of musculo-skeletal and one sudden death during training. The Times accounting of horse deaths do not generally account for diseases or non-racing injuries.
In 2019, Taylor was restored to good standing in Louisiana after a 2012 drug violation for the drug Dermorphin, a pain killer, known as frog juice because its origin was from secretions of South American tree frogs. Taylor served three years and nine months before being reinstated.
Racing at Los Alamitos is conducted every Friday and Saturday.
Senior captains Sadie Hoch and Bridget Taketa anchored a superb midfield quartet that took command after the break, but the Sailors’ inefficiency when opportunities arrived left them with in a 2-0 home loss that sends Los Alamitos into a novel second stage of Sunset play with an advantage.
All-CIF Southern Section midfielder Viviana Zacarias scored both goals for Los Alamitos, from a long through ball in the first half and with an arcing free kick in the closing minutes. The win gave the Griffins (12-5-3 overall, 6-0 Sunset League) a three-point edge on Newport Harbor (13-3-3, 5-1) and a first-round bye in the inaugural league-closing tournament that begins Thursday.
Newport Harbor’s Mia Knox (20) takes a shot as Los Alamitos goalie Avarie Gonzalez (1) tries to block on Tuesday. (Don Leach / Staff Photographer) The expected prize: a rematch at Los Alamitos in Wednesday’s final. That game, far more than this one, would have more to say about who wins the Sunset League title. This one adds fuel.
“Sometimes that happens in soccer, the better team doesn’t necessarily win,” Hoch said. “We felt like we were the better team, at least for the second half. You know, that game didn’t really mean much, other than seeding [for the tournament], so, hopefully, we’ll get another chance at them ... show them our real team and get the result that we want.”
The inaugural tournament, designed to avoid a mid-December start to league play, won’t determine the league champion but will provide the decisive points. Nine will go to the champion — four in the title game — and a Harbor triumph over Los Alamitos would give them 24 to the Griffins’ 23.
The Sailors are home against seventh-seeded Fountain Valley (8-6-3, 0-6) in their first-round game. The winner will meet No. 3 Huntington Beach (12-3-4, 4-2) or No. 6 Marina (4-10-0, 1-5) in Monday’s semifinals.
Newport Harbor’s Natalie McCarty (24) is tripped up during a key Sunset League soccer match against Los Alamitos on Tuesday. (Don Leach / Staff Photographer) Los Alamitos, an enduring powerhouse that has won seven successive Sunset or Surf league championships, awaits No. 4 Edison (10-7-2, 3-3) or No. 5 Corona del Mar (13-5-0, 2-4). Higher seeds are home throughout, and there’s a consolation bracket, with the Edison-CdM loser receiving a bye into the final.
Huntington Beach is the only team aside from the top two that can win the league title. The Oilers would have to win the tournament while Los Alamitos lost its semifinal and third-place games.
“Anyone can beat anyone on any day, so it’s going to be a challenge,” Griffins head coach Pat Rossi said. “That’s why the Sunset League is so strong, because every team can play.”
Rare is the team that plays such beautiful, flowing soccer as Los Alamitos, which looked the part for the first 10 minutes or so. Newport Harbor then figured out how to deal with a tightly spaced midfield as the Griffins mirrored the Sailors’ 3-2-4-1, box-midfield alignment.
Newport Harbor’s Leah Showalter (14) takes a shot on goal past Alina Perez (12) against Los Alamitos on Tuesday. (Don Leach / Staff Photographer) Harbor brought greater intensity in the second half, penning the Griffins inside their defensive third, forcing them to go direct, ineffectually, and cutting off passing lanes. Zacarias’ dead-ball strike in the 76th minute was their first shot of the half.
The Sailors in both halves failed to capitalize on their chances, the best coming in a six-minute span midway through the second half: a misplaced Paige Shanahan header from Abbi Clapp’s cross, a loose ball in the goalmouth from another Clapp delivery five minutes later, and a Mia Knox one-on-one sent high moments after that.
“The first half was a little uneven for us, but the second half was definitely more of things that we could do,” Newport Harbor coach Justin Schroeder said. “Just a bummer [to lose]. I mean, that’s part of the game. Oftentimes you come out games and you’re like, ‘We played really well.’ We might have been the better team. We just didn’t get the result. And that’s soccer 101, for the most part.”
“They totally [took us out of our game],” Rossi said. “They’re awesome. Their coach did a great job there, and we were fortunate to get a set piece there and a goal early. ... We were just trying to defend the lead at that point.”
Huntington Beach secured the third seed as freshman Mia Sanchez, just pulled up from the junior varsity team, scored in overtime for a 1-0 victory at Corona del Mar. Marina claimed the No. 6 seed, beating visiting Fountain Valley, 1-0, on Cadence Dodosh’s goal midway through the first half.
