always been a special place in Southern California It is a place that is close in miles to large metropolitan cities and yet far in spirit the rolling hills were home to a few ranches and homesteaders A handful of property owners appreciated the beauty of the hills The majority of the residents were red tail hawks Boys Republic made Chino Hills its home in 1909 The facility continues to provide important contributions to the lives of young people and sends its famous Della Robbia wreaths around the world during the holidays Sleepy Hollow was a perfect weekend getaway from the fast pace of Los Angeles Sleepy Hollow was a summer resort with about 90 cabins these cabins and newer dwellings became permanent residences was also a favorite spot for city dwellers members of the golf club could purchase small lots in the community The club members would erect cabanas on their property Today the course is owned by the family of tennis legend Jack Kramer and is still a favorite Chino Hills attraction The natural beauty of Chino Hills in the early 1900's is preserved in Chino Hills State Park was the guiding force behind the preservation of 14,102 acres of land that became the largest California State Park located in an urban setting Visitors to the park take a step back in time to a place where they seem to be decades away from the urbanization of California word was spreading that Chino Hills was a great place for year-round family living More and more people were discovering the unspoiled hills located within an easy drive of downtown Los Angeles Residents appreciated the rolling green hills and beautiful vistas in the community They wanted to preserve and protect the hills and guide future development into the most suitable locations They were realizing the importance of providing needed services while safeguarding environmentally sensitive areas It was clear that Chino Hills was a special place and residents began seeking a way to be involved in shaping the community's future the County of San Bernardino initiated the development of the Chino Hills Specific Plan – the document that would plan for the eventual development of 18,000 acres – 26 square miles – located in Chino Hills The area had been protected from haphazard development because the land was not flat enough to build inexpensively that development pressures were moving toward Chino Hills The innovative Specific Plan was the first in the State of California to be designed for an unincorporated area A Citizen's Advisory Committee and County officials worked in cooperation with 150 property owners to develop the Plan The Southwest Hills Environmental and Planning Association (SHEPA) also participated in the public land use discussions during that time The Specific Plan called for clustered residential development concentrated in village cores decreasing in density away from the core in order to protect as much open space as possible Commercial development was slated along the Highway 71 corridor there were approximately 4,000 homes and 12,000 residents in Chino Hills citizens in Chino Hills were represented by one member of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors The Fourth District County Supervisor appointed citizens to serve as advisors to various County Service Areas that had oversight responsibilities for items such as road maintenance and landscaping Chino Hills residents also served on the Chino Hills Municipal Advisory Council that met monthly at Gerald F Litel elementary school to listen to citizen concerns and make recommendations to the County Supervisor a 45-minute trip to San Bernardino was necessary Building and Safety issues and permits were handled in Ontario some residents were actively exploring the pros and cons of cityhood The issue of local control was moving to the forefront or sign up for a new account to continue reading We hope that you continue to enjoy our free content THIS SERVICE Country Club Drive A view of the northwest section of Los Serranos Golf Course from Fairway Boulevard A housing development could be built in the next few years on a portion of Los Serranos Golf Course on Yorba Avenue if negotiations are fruitful between the City of Chino Hills and golf course property owner Jay Greening Greening owns the property and leases it to the Kramer family who reportedly is working to reconfigure the course The city council met behind closed doors in October to discuss the possibility of a transfer of high-density units designated for the open land at Tres Hermanos Ranch to the golf course to comply with Measure U requires a public vote before a developer can increase the number of housing units beyond what is allowed in the city’s General Plan Community development director Joann Lombardo said Mr Greening approached the city to request the transfer that would allow the development of a nine-hole portion of the course into single-family residential “The city considered this request in closed session and indicated a willingness to consider a transfer,” Ms it’s not a “slam dunk deal” that he can do whatever he wants to do especially if we get a lot of negative feedback from the community.” The closed session agenda item stated “conference with real property negotiators for price and terms for property” at Tres Hermanos Ranch but it is unclear why price and terms were discussed because the city is not purchasing the property City attorney Mark Hensley did not respond by deadline to a request to clarify why the transfer was discussed behind closed doors a public process would take place that includes public hearings The units would come from Tres Hermanos “site A,” an area along Grand Avenue where units were transferred as a placeholder during the city’s 2015 general plan update Tres Hermanos is located on both sides of Grand Avenue in Chino Hills and Diamond Bar and is owned by the City of Industry Greening and Los Serranos Golf Course management declined to comment for the story Councilman Art Bennett said his understanding of the nine-hole portion referred to by Ms Lombardo is the northern section of the golf course where it wraps around Fairway Boulevard and adjacent to Pipeline Avenue but he said things are still up in the air The two 18-hole golf courses would undergo a redesign and the holes would drop from 36 to 27 under the proposal Bennett said the golf course industry is hurting because of the high cost of maintenance and watering and other factors He said the transaction would relieve the golf course from high maintenance costs while allowing it to continue operations and remain an asset to the community Lifelong Los Serranos resident Ron Eaton said the housing plan is a disappointment and is not a secret in the Los Serranos community including those who work at the golf course While canvassing the neighborhood during the election said he was approached by several people about the proposed housing “That was one of the things I hoped to address if I became a councilman,” he said Marquez said he did not receive any money from Mr who also owns the Lake Los Serranos mobile home will be discussed by the Chino Hills Planning Commission at 6 p.m is asking for approval of a site plan and minor use permit for the golf instruction facility to be built on a one-acre portion of the 176-acre Los Serranos Golf Course The facility would consist of a 3,376-square-foot building with offices five golf instruction bays ranging from 300- to 400-square feet and a new asphalt surface parking area with 17 stalls The one-story building would have a maximum height of 16 feet with an architectural style similar to the Los Serranos clubhouse Golftec will provide private one-on-one golf lessons using video analysis A maximum of five instructors and five clients will be present at any given time Golftec will be open to the public seven days a week from 8 a.m Access to the project site city of Chino Hills and the Los Serranos community,” said Chino Hills Mayor Cynthia Moran when she opened the ceremony under sunny skies the city set out to find a way to bring a park to this community.” Joint meetings between the school district and the city of Chino Hills began in 1998 but land ownership issues muddled the process over the years because the district owned the land Wayne Joseph for helping the city solve the problem but you were the superintendent who said yes,” she said “We owe you a debt of gratitude for supporting our plan to build a park on school district land.” Joseph joked that he didn’t know the difference between Bird Farm and Big Bird when the city of Chino Hills approached him about the matter The mayor introduced former Chaparral principal Tom Mackessy co-founder of RJM Design Group who designed the park and several others in Chino Hills chief executive officer of Kasa Construction of Chino and his team who built the park Moran credited the Chino Hills Community Foundation for originally committing $150,000 to help build the playground an amount that was increased to $173,000 thanks to two donors She thanked Champion publisher emeritus Allen McCombs and the McCombs Family Foundation for contributing $20,000 and Chino Hills residents Howard and Nikki Applebaum and their foundation for contributing $3,000 for special needs play equipment Mayor Moran said the city made a $4.8 million investment in the park with funding from various sources including the General Fund $2.7 million from park fees paid by new home developers and Community Facilities District 5 taxpayers who paid $1.9 million Competitors for a 1960 tournament at Los Serranos County Club Jack Kramer (1921-2009) was the top-rated tennis player in the world and the 25-year old seeing that making a living at his sport was going to be difficult despite this honor created his own professional tour the following year demonstrating his business acumen along with his athletic talent Kramer was born in Las Vegas to Daisy French and David Kramer The family moved in the early 1930s to San Bernardino and then to East Los Angeles with Kramer graduating from Montebello High School Kramer found his forte early on the tennis court netting the National Boys Championship in 1936 and a National Junior Interscholastic Tournament two years later he joined the American squad for the Davis Cup being the youngest player to date to play in that prestigious competition Illness slowed his progress in the early 1940s and he then served in the Coast Guard during World War II but the immediate postwar period found Kramer in his playing prime Nationals back-to-back and captured the crown at Wimbledon perhaps the pinnacle of tennis achievement He also won several doubles titles at the Nationals during the decade and won major tournaments in the United States and England as the Forties came to a close While his playing career peaked as the 1950s began as co-founder of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) were complimented by his success as a television commentator His Jack Kramer Autograph racket produced by Wilson was a smashing success It was said that Kramer took up golf after a rainstorm washed out a tennis match and he wandered over to the adjacent course to check it out a local pro living in Montebello and who made the cut at the U.S founder of the Thermador appliance company in taking a 20-year lease on the Los Serranos Country Club but frequently struggled to stay afloat financially including the subject of a recent “History of the Hills” column An attempt in 1949 by a Los Angeles group of investors to develop a Black-owned recreation center met stiff local resistance as well as problematic financial issues but the purchase of the club by Jack Greening who amassed a massive real estate portfolio in what became Chino Hills and who will be featured in next month’s column was quickly followed by the lease to Cranston suburbia spreading further east from Los Angeles Los Serranos finally became the success for which it always had the potential Eaton moved to Palm Springs to manage a municipal course while Cranston sold his interest to Kramer a much-lauded south course was added to the long-existing and remodeled north one so there were 36 holes to challenge golfers at the public facility a columnist for the Pomona Progress-Bulletin interviewed Kramer and noted he was owner of Los Serranos but added “that’s not his claim to fame,” reminding readers that he was one of the best tennis players in history Kramer invited the columnist to a pro tournament at the Los Angeles Tennis Club and the writer observed that he accepted because it would be like turning down a baseball game on the invitation of the commissioner later long-time general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers Next year marks 70 years of the Kramer family’s operation of the Los Serranos Country Club with 2025 being the centennial of the club’s opening so there’s plenty of history to soon commemorate I moved to Chino Hills in the Los Serranos community not too far away from the Los Serranos Country Club in December 1989 before the houses in Butterfield Ranch were constructed Chino Hills was not yet a city until it became incorporated in 1991 The market Alpha Beta was located where the 99 Cents Store is now When we moved here the area code was 714 and our zip code was 91710 The nearest video store was known as Rusty’s Country Video and we had Blockbuster Video and The Wherehouse as well The construction boom of houses and shopping centers did not begin until a few years after I moved here The air smelled more like cows and fertilizer from the farms When my family and I moved to Chino Hills I guess the elementary schools were not handicap accessible For elementary school I moved around a few times because they had a physical therapy unit that would help me out when I used to walk and after that I transferred over to Oak Ridge and Glenmeade elementary schools and I graduated from Ayala High School in 2001 I am still in school today; I go to Chaffey College in Chino One thing I have learned in being in college for so long is that you have to want to go to school and now that I am older When I graduate from Chaffey College at the end of the year I am going to transfer to Cal State Fullerton to major in communications with a minor in journalism My dad would drop me off there almost every day before he went to work He was understandably upset to find out that I was not going to class It is safer for everyone if I just wheel everywhere or take the bus I am content with doing that as long as I keep up my strength all the kids would talk about going to Skate Express in Chino or Jer’s Board Shop in the shopping center where Chino Hills Pizza Company and KYR Music are today I never went to any of those places for obvious reasons if you know me Now that I am older there is not much to do besides go to a bar or eat at a restaurant Chino Hills has grown so much over the last 30 years that it is hard to even go out and meet someone I want different things like a friend that will hopefully lead to something more than that As much as I have wheeled around in this city I am really surprised that I have not met that special someone yet I am single and have been for the last seven years Just because I am in a wheelchair does not mean that I cannot have a girlfriend After we get through this pandemic; that is my mission Thomas Davila is a contributing columnist for the Champion David Kramer tests the idea of a bicycle towing a golf bag on a “surf wagon” at the Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills He said the golf course didn’t go with the idea because it was deemed too risky David Kramer and his wife Rosie at the Kentucky Derby Churchill Downs Racetrack in May 2017 He met his wife in Germany when he was teaching tennis and they got married one year later in 1983 “A citizen is a person who possesses the virtues of ruling and being ruled He is able to act morally in morally demanding situations.” This definition of citizen pretty much sums up the life and philosophical principles of David Kramer of Chino Hills a man who practices citizenship by way of self-interaction and building goodwill for the benefit of others Kramer was told last week he was named the Champion’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year for 2021 he was driving into Boys Republic to feed the family’s thoroughbred horses he visits twice a day He could be heard informing the person at the gate that he just visited his Aunt Muriel and had already taken his temperature Then he responded to the Champion by saying Kramer will be recognized at the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce installation dinner at 6 p.m is the eldest of the five Kramer brothers who own Los Serranos Golf Course purchased by their father Jack Kramer in the late 1950s He is known for his philanthropy to Chino Valley organizations and his long-time service with the Rancho del Chino Rotary Club and Chino Valley YMCA considered the number one player in the world from 1946 to 1953 winning the Wimbledon title in 1947 and the U.S Kramer has the distinction of being photographed inside the Davis Cup when he was age 1 “I doubt that anyone is more deserving of this honor than David He truly is one of the most considerate persons alive,” she said Kramer’s dedication to saving his family’s thoroughbred horses he invited her to join him for a horse feeding he picked her up at the Lake Los Serranos Mobile Home Park where she resides “The thrill of petting the horses and giving them peppermints took me back to my childhood of growing up with thoroughbreds,” she said Kramer didn’t stop there and made arrangements for her to watch the farrier trim their hooves showing me the facilities and the animals,” she said “David Kramer truly went above and beyond to bring happiness to an elderly person Kramer said what makes a city great is the collection of individuals who work beyond the range of their own personal concerns to make the city great “Heck we’re all citizens of the year,” he said “David has been with the Rancho del Chino Rotary Club for 25 years,” he said “He is a passionate advocate for Rotary International’s Peace Conference and participant for peaceful solutions to worldwide issues,” he said Another service effort is the Chino Hills Community Foundation Kramer and the Kramer Family Foundation regularly donate to community causes such as The Let it Be Foundation The Jack and Gloria Kramer Family Foundation has generally donated significant sums of money to the foundation Kramer represented the Rancho del Chino Rotary Club on a trip to India with the Peace Conference in 2008 where he visited small villages with no schools The club partnered with a Rotary Club in Delhi to raise money for an educational program he attended a six-week Vedic conference that included a four-day trip in Rishikesh in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River “I took a bath in the river and it was so cold Kramer was a teaching tennis professional from 1975 to 1983 in Coto De Caza and managed two tennis clubs for 10 years in Palm Desert “My dad invited me to join the family business in 1991,” he said He commuted to Los Serranos Golf Course for many months until his wife Rosie said When asked to share “something the community doesn’t know about him,” Mr “I taught Transcendental Meditation to Arthur Ashe.” Kramer took a course in Transcendental Meditation from the first American-trained teacher in San Diego in 1968 and has been practicing it seven days a week twice a day for 20 minute sessions ever since He said it comes as natural to him as brushing his teeth “Our nervous system can reach a deeper level than the deepest level of sleep,” he said Kramer joined the Naval Reserve in 1967 because he thought it would be “prudent to be on a boat instead of a foxhole.” “I went to an 80-day boot camp to start my active duty as soon as possible,” he said and was assistant director to the athletic director at Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay Kramer and his wife Rosie have been married for 38 years A concept site plan shows apartments proposed at Lake Los Serranos mobile home park A traffic study and environmental report will be conducted for 354 apartments proposed around the lake at the Lake Los Serranos Mobile Home Park on Pipeline Avenue in Chino Hills The apartments will consist of two-and three-story buildings The city council approved the agreements at its Sept 10 meeting where a few residents opposed the project said the project will worsen gridlock between 7 and 9 a.m and make it difficult for people making left turns from Country Club Drive to Bird Farm Road “Think about the impact on citizens who have to drive,” he said just open your eyes and see what the problem is.” Buchanan was also concerned that developer Jack Greening is seeking a variance (an exception) to increase the building height from 35 feet to 41 feet Tim Witten said the project will increase property values and improve flood runoff on Ramona Avenue and Bird Farm Road said she supports the project but wants to see as many trees preserved as possible including the pepper and palms that surround the lake said Ramona Avenue is a circus from 3:30 to 7 a.m She was also concerned about animal life at the lake liability for children at the edge of the lake and one-way in and one-way out access for mobile home park residents contains numerous trees and riparian habitat of Irvine will prepare a traffic impact study for $48,875 and ECORP Consulting of Redlands will process an environmental document in an amount of $73,300 who owns the mobile home park and is proposing the apartments sat with his wife in the back row of the council chambers during the proceedings longtime property owners in Chino Hills dating back to 1945 also owns Los Serranos Golf Course and is proposing a residential development of single-family homes on a portion of the golf course on Yorba Avenue Greening’s plans consist of two “villages” of 13 acres each connected by a bridge over the southern tip of the lake the development will have a boardwalk and seating area and a pedestrian walkway on the connecting bridge The 49-acre project includes the 19-acre lake A simulation of the main entry to the “east village” of Rancho Cielito with the lake shown in the background is provided in the architectural design reports submitted to the city This image of the western shorline at Lake Los Serranos shows some of the vegetation communities that were mapped along the lake edges as part of the project’s biological and environmental studies An apartment complex consisting of two “villages” connected with walking paths and bridges with Lake Los Serranos as the prominent feature received approval on Tuesday by the Chino Hills Planning Commission The proposed Rancho Cielito will consist of 354 apartments on 48 acres The development will be built at 15303 Country Club Drive north of Los Serranos Boulevard/Valle Vista Drive and south of the lake at Lake Los Serranos Mobile Home Park The project will appear on the Chino Hills City Council agenda on Tuesday to allow the council the option  of calling it up for discussion The developer is mobile home park owner Jack (Jay) Greening beginning with his grandfather Paul Greening The complex would include the east village section of 166 units accessible on Ramona Avenue with a second entrance on Valle Vista Drive; and the west village containing 188 units on Los Serranos Boulevard The apartments will consist of 7 two-story and 7 three-story residential carriage buildings The internal road linking the villages will be anchored at the two roundabouts circling two mature eucalyptus trees A signal will eventually be installed at Bird Farm Road and Ramona Avenue with the developer’s fair share of the signal cost projected at $51,062 The developer received approval to increase the building height from 35 feet to 44 feet to screen the mechanical equipment for three elevator towers Greening told the Planning Commission in December that Rancho Cielito was named after the nearby dam It is also a term of endearment in Spanish meaning “honey” or “sweetheart.” “The goal of Rancho Cielito is to create an upscale community that is compatible with our senior community on the north,” he said and engineers to create a project with unusually generous open space and walking trails throughout the community,” he said The apartments will feature elevators that will make it a lot easier for seniors and young mothers with children and groceries to get to the second and third floors He said the complex will feature a boardwalk and gazebo for outdoor events Extensive efforts have been made to preserve and enhance the lake over the years said the project will place the animals and wildlife in jeopardy “This is the most unique place in Chino Hills,” he said “You won’t find wildlife like this in any other area.”  Several residents said they were concerned about traffic impacts in the area The traffic report calculates 2,591 trips on a daily basis Dorst said a signal at Ramona and Valle Vista will not take care of the traffic issue when the real concern is the intersection of Pipeline Avenue and Los Serranos Boulevard The commission engaged in a lively discussion with the traffic consultant about speeding and traffic impacts Law & Greenspan said a traffic signal is not warranted at Los Serranos Boulevard/Pipeline Avenue Commissioner Mike Stover said he was also concerned about the configuration “I hope this is not placed in the background until an incident occurs because there will be plenty of people to say I told you so,” he said Commissioner Sean Phan said a signal may not have met the criteria to be installed at Los Serranos Boulevard and Pipeline Avenue but he shared the same concerns as the others said she agrees that the curve from Los Serranos Boulevard onto Pipeline is dangerous Gilfy said there are approximately 200 Canada geese at Lake Los Serranos Most of them leave during the day to find food at Prado Lake and fly back to Lake Los Serranos between 4 and 7 p.m Gilfy said approximately 50 Canada geese live at the lake year-round the project will have to go through numerous regulatory hoops with the U.S and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Biological reports required to be submitted by the developer show that there are two vegetation communities considered sensitive: the Fremont Cottonwood Forest and Woodland and California Bulrush Marsh The site contains 2 acres of eucalyptus groves and mitigation plan must be submitted to the city showing the location of all removed trees Shoreline trees must be preserved wherever feasible Nearly 125 different wildlife species were observed or detected during the biological surveys Nesting habitat for migratory birds is also present on the site including Canada geese and hooded orioles which were all observed over the course of various focused biological surveys Double-crested cormorant Rock climbing walls at left and a zipline, at right, are some of the unusual amenities being built at Los Serranos Park in Chino Hills. Mayor Cynthia Moran and Councilman Peter Rogers took turns on the zipline. Chino Hills Councilman Brian Johsz tries out the exercise equipment at Los Serranos Park during a Wednesday morning tile ceremony. Under grey skies, children and adults gathered at Los Serranos Park Wednesday morning to celebrate the future park and imaginative tiles students created for it. Chaparral Elementary School fifth grader David Jaramillo said the park will be “a good park -- our park,” as he joined his classmates at the circular bench around the courtyard where the tiles are being placed. Faith Jaloma, 11, proudly held her tile showing a girl on a swing with the words “Fun in the Park.” A tree will be planted in the center of the courtyard. Councilman Brian Johsz, while heading over to play on the equipment, said he hoped it would be an oak, the tree on the city logo. The 6-acre park on Pomona Rincon Road at Bird Farm Road, adjacent to Chaparral and designed by RJM Design Group, has been under construction since September. It will feature a full basketball court, a playground with features such as a place to spin gears, a zipline, rock climbing walls, dual slide, exercise stations, and a sidewalk area for traditional games like foursquare and hopscotch, as requested by Mayor Cynthia Moran. The hopscotch is in the form of a large yellow sunflower with numbers on the leaves of the stalk. Also included is a restroom, walking path and a gazebo. Crews hope to have the park completed by the end of the year, despite rainy weather that hampered construction because of the clay-type soil in Chino Hills. The $4.8 million park is being paid for by the city’s general fund, parks and recreation facilities fees, an in-lieu fee that developers pay who do not build parks called the Quimby in-lieu fee, and community facilities district 5 taxes. The Chino Hills Community Foundation donated $170,000 for playground equipment. The city’s 44th park is being built on land owned by the school district leased to the City of Chino Hills for $1 a year. Sorry, there are no recent results for popular videos. mobile home park The project site is owned by the Greening family Notices have been mailed to residents of Lake Los Serranos mobile home park on Pipeline Avenue in Chino Hills about a lakefront apartment project planned by mobile home park owner Jack Greening The Greening Family is proposing 354 apartments in two “villages” of 13 acres each connected by a bridge over the southern tip of the lake Each village would have a clubhouse and pool The Spanish word cielito is a term of endearment similar to honey or sweetheart the development consists of a “peninsula” area with a boardwalk and seating area jutting into the lake walking paths along the lake with vista points a pedestrian walkway on the connecting bridge The 49-acre project includes the 20.7-acre lake said community development director Joann Lombardo She said the project is still under review so any improvements and mitigation measures (corrective steps to reduce impact) have yet to be determined The development won’t come before the Chino Hills Planning Commission until early 2020 A total of 445 notices were sent by the city to mobile home park residents and property owners within 300 feet of the project At least one mobile home park resident has major concerns and dropped off a lengthy stating that adding 354 family-style apartments onto the banks of a quiet serene lake will change the atmosphere and character of the Lake Los Serranos mobile home park Play areas and outdoor congregation areas will be located just several feet away from senior citizens who have enjoyed the quiet and solitude of their homes for years The resident is urging the city to require the owner to keep the lake’s water aeration systems operational year-round so as not to kill lake stock as has happened in the past and that the water level should be kept to its maximum mark in the hot summer months A signal will be installed at Bird Farm Road and Ramona Avenue where the Lago Los Serranos condominiums are under break under the gazebo The six-acre park is the city’s 44th park and includes a playground with a zipline The ordering of a dedication plaque for Los Serranos Park in Chino Hills last year prompted some changes to policy guidelines on who should be recognized The Chino Hills Parks and Recreation Commission  on Wednesday night approved changes to the 2005 policy including the addition of commissioners and department directors’ names on the plaques The policy was broadened to include all community facilities The names of city council members and the city manager were already included The addition of department directors and commissioners is new to the policy however those names have been included on dedication plaques in the past said community services supervisor Jessica Gandara former Community Services Director Mike Fleager’s name is on the plaque for Grand Avenue Park even though it wasn’t in the policy to do so Current director Jonathan Marshall’s name appears on the dedication plaques on Community Park Chairman Greg Higgins said the changes were made to standardize the policy and recognize additional individuals Also added to the policy was a provision that the community relations division review and approved plaque verbiage Although dedication plaques are on some community facilities including the civic center buildings public works commissioners or their respective department directors are not included Push for legislation to protect employees in hospitality industry rife with abuse as corporations spend millions to oppose initiatives Sexual harassment is pervasive in the restaurant service and hospitality industries in the US and more claims of this kind are reported in the industry than any other sector of the American economy A 2021 survey by One Fair Wage found over 70% of female restaurant employees have been sexually harassed at least once while working in the industry with 44% reporting they experienced sexual harassment from someone in a management or ownership role A May 2018 survey by Restaurant Opportunities Centers United found 34% of women who formerly worked as tipped restaurant workers left their jobs due to sexual harassment they experienced in the workplace But big corporations, such as JC Resorts, have spent millions of dollars in opposition to initiatives that would require panic buttons for hospitality workers When four young women began working at the Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills, California a country club and two-golf course resort in one of the wealthiest suburban cities outside of Los Angeles they immediately began experiencing sexual harassment from a senior chef at the resort Over the course of their employment from 2021 into 2022 the harassment gradually escalated The club is part of the JC Resorts portfolio a luxury resort owner and operator in southern California The women, Jalyn Ito, Reagan Coburn, Daniela Serna and Ariana Tan have recently filed lawsuits against the club and JC Resorts alleging they experienced rampant sexual harassment on the job They say that upon filing formal complaints with the human resources department an investigation was conducted and the chef was only demoted leaving the women forced to continue working with them while they then experienced retaliatory behavior The Los Serranos country club golf course Four young women claim in a lawsuit that they experienced sexual harassment from a senior chef at the resort Photograph: Rick Loomis/Los Angeles Times/Getty ImagesAriana Tan began working as a line cook in the kitchen of the Los Serranos Golf Club in 2021 at the age of 17 two chefs constantly made sexually inappropriate comments about her and other women working at the club while on the job “I felt really traumatized by this entire experience,” said Tan “The fact that me and the other girls are so young and we’re challenging such a huge corporation should serve as a warning to employers that the younger generation is sick of being marginalized and we’re not going to put up with misogyny in the workplace.” She described the need to hold those in charge accountable for a lack of action and to address these issues of sexual harassment in the workplace not being taken seriously by employers “I felt like I’m at the top of this burning building I felt like we just didn’t matter to human resources and feeling this sense of being worthless there,” she added all these other expenses are covered by this job you just have to go home with this mentality of keeping your head down to keep going just to pay rent or feed yourself and it’s been really mentally exhausting to go in and just work every single day and it’s super heartbreaking.” Tan alleges a chef made frequent comments about her physical appearance engaged in inappropriate touching and was made constantly uncomfortable by their behavior and commentary from offering to bring in high heels for her to wear to physically comparing female banquet servers with another chef in a sexually explicit manner After human resources conducted an investigation Tan had to continue working alongside the chef in the kitchen where they escalated aggressive and predatory behavior toward her and continuing to make sexually inappropriate comments within her earshot began working at the Los Serranos Golf Club in 2021 The chef immediately began fixating on them making suggestive comments and interrogating them about their romantic lives “I felt extremely manipulated by my employer and my employer’s response and it made me feel extremely anxious When all four women reported formal complaints to the club’s general manager and human resources they were initially reassured the complaints were being taken seriously and action would be taken I’ve felt lost just walking into that place remembering all the lies and memories has really hurt all of us Every person wants to feel safe in their workplace wants to feel heard and like they’re being cared for we feel that in our experience that just wasn’t the case here,” said Ito looking at the managers and just feeling let down that they didn’t listen to us.” “We just want young women to be able to have power and feel heard because we feel like we we weren’t heard,” said Coburn “We want employers to know that they can’t just get away with this type of stuff.” A spokesperson for JC Resorts said in an email: “At JC Resorts we support our people and are invested in their workplace safety and success JC Resorts has not received the specific lawsuits we take very seriously all allegations of employee misconduct we conduct thorough investigations and implement appropriate discipline based upon the available evidence.” 10% off products and services for Chapman University students and faculty with ablaze in pinpricks of angry red and orange flame paid little mind to the wail of nearby sirens and the broadcasts of the San Bernardino Police Department to evacuate immediately.  he pointed at a ridge of tall trees about a quarter mile away from his home roughly in the middle of him and the fires gazing out at a largely deserted neighborhood “The only thing that really matters is my wife About a mile away from Wheeler’s residence Kamren Sherman was working a shift at Nonno's Pizzeria that the restaurant wasn’t worried about the fire’s threat Sherman’s attitude changed just a few hours later when the scent of smoke wafted into Nonno’s.  “You can look outside and just see the panic,” Sherman said ‘Are we going to cover shifts tomorrow?’ I was like ‘You should be worried if this place is going to be open.’” While Sherman and his family are still deciding whether to evacuate Chino Hills sisters Natasha Barnett and Jordan Huel have already fled they initially resisted orders to evacuate from their house off Butterfield Ranch Road which has the now-burning Chino Hills State Park as its “backyard,” Barnett said.  The hillside next to Los Serranos Ranch in Chino Hills contributed to the 14,344 acres lost in the Blue Ridge Fire Every 30 minutes throughout the night of Oct police would announce the need to evacuate with a loud banging on the front door when their neighbors implored them to leave “It was really sad because one of our (other) neighbors next door he’s really old and he didn’t know what was going on,” Huel said the roar of a firefighting backyard on fire – what it’s going to do to my community and the loss that’s going to be happening,” Barnett said “We haven’t experienced something like this in a very long time … It’s never that close to home.” With specks of ash cascading from the sky and the sun’s reddish hue projecting an eerie glow behind layers of smoke, evacuation orders continue to spread through Chino Hills, with the Blue Ridge Fire currently at 16% containment. About 10 miles away, the Silverado Fire in Irvine is 25% contained Helicopters and planes flew overhead to drop fire retardant on the flames Southern California Edison has shut down power to communities near the fires, as the electricity supplier has said their equipment may have sparked the Silverado Canyon fires.  In total, the two fires have devastated over 27,000 acres and have forced at least 90,000 to flee. The “resident” geese, as they are called, are laying eggs, getting bold, not moving for cars, attacking residents, and leaving behind slippery waste deposits. Owner Jack Greening said the geese carry salmonella and diseases that can be dangerous to people with compromised immune systems. Some are laying eggs on rooftops with the potential for lice and mites entering the homes. “They’re very aggressive especially at this time of year when they’re getting ready to lay eggs,” he said.  The goose overrun began seven or eight years ago when a resident dumped his backyard geese into the lake and the population began multiplying, Mr. Greening said. To control the problem, Mr. Greening is following the advice of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) by coating the eggs with vegetable oil.  The eggs are then taken on the outskirts of the lake for coyotes and critters to devour. The oil clogs the pores on the shell and prevents the eggs from hatching. This method of population control led to rumors posted on social media that a maintenance man was maliciously killing Canada geese and destroying their eggs at the mobile home park. “People with ignorance are making these statements,” Mr. Greening said. “They assume the worst and have no idea what is going on.” Pam Bierce, spokesperson for USFWS said it is legal for landowners and local governments to destroy the nests and eggs of resident Canada geese when necessary to resolve or prevent injury to people, property, crops, or other interests, as explained in a fact sheet. The eggs of migratory bird species other than resident Canada geese may not be destroyed. Landowners must register on the USFWS website between Jan. 1 and June 30 of the year in which the nests and eggs will be destroyed. Instructions are provided on how to conduct nest visits and how to report the number of eggs destroyed. Fawn Witten, who has resided at the mobile home park for 19 years, said the resident geese are the ones that act like they own the road while the migratory geese scamper out of the way. Ms. Witten, a self-described animal freak, said she loves the geese and wildlife. “I feel sad when the eggs are destroyed and the geese can’t hatch their babies,” she said. “The geese hang around and grieve for awhile. You don’t think of a bird having a loving spot but evidently they do.” Andrew Hughan, spokesman for California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the agency doesn’t believe in destroying wildlife and would not condone the practice, on moral grounds. Show Search Search Query Submit Search Don't Miss is one of the last remaining oral historians of the Indigenous Serrano language (Christina House / Los Angeles Times) When Ernest Siva was a boy on the Morongo Reservation in Riverside County he listened to the music and stories of his ancestors who had lived in Southern California long before the land was called by that name He recalls running around a ceremonial fire on the reservation at age 5 as a weeklong ceremony honoring those who had died the previous year culminated with the burning of images in their likeness Dollar bills and coins were thrown into the fire in tribute as tribal elders sang songs reserved for special occasions Siva and his cousin chased after the singed money that fluttered out of the flames largely ignoring the traditional lyrics in the background The specific words and rhythms are now distant memories for the 84-year-old Siva I didn’t learn any of those songs because they’re only sung for a specific occasion,” he said California TOVAANGAR “The world.” From the top of Signal Hill, Los Angeles disappears in the haze. The following year, the ceremony was hosted by another tribe, but over the years, the people who knew the Indigenous songs died without passing them on. Siva is working to change that. For the last 25 years, the Banning resident has been a tribal historian with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. For thousands of years, the Serrano language was passed down through oral tradition. The word “Serrano” comes from the Spanish term for “highlander,” which is what the 18th century explorers called the Maara’yam people. Stories were passed on for generations by elders, but Siva thinks by the 1950s, some of the oral history — as well as the Indigenous language, which has many dialects — had already begun to fade away. Dorothy Ramon, Siva’s aunt, was the last “pure,” or fluent, speaker of the Serrano language. In the 1920s, Ramon was forced to attend the Sherman Institute in Riverside, a boarding school meant to assimilate Native American children and strip them of their Indigenous traditions and languages. But Ramon and her siblings were encouraged by their grandfather Francisco Morongo to keep their language alive or risk losing their heritage. The traditional Thanksgiving story got it wrong How should you talk about the holiday with your kids linguists have researched the Serrano spoken word she collaborated on a 12-year project with linguist Eric Elliott who translated her stories into the 2000 book “Wayta’ Yawa’ (Always Believe).” “It was a big surprise that she even worked with a linguist because she was on the shy side and kept to herself,” Siva said Revitalization efforts over the last three decades carried out by the Morongo and San Manuel Bands of Mission Indians have worked to resurrect the language that was once spoken by people across the region Cal State University San Bernardino has a full-credit course on the Serrano language that counts toward a general education requirement. (Christina House / Los Angeles Times) Earlier this month, San Bernardino County formally recognized the language for the first time even though Serrano people have been in the region since before the arrival of Spanish missionaries in the 1700s He devotes most of his time and energy to sharing the Serrano culture and language Siva contributes to Cal State San Bernardino’s language program through an arrangement between the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the university A class on the Native American language was introduced over a decade ago the coordinator of the California Indian Languages Programs at Cal State San Bernardino said Siva’s instruction has been vital in keeping the Serrano language alive “I believe that his sincere desire to preserve and pass along the language and traditions of the local native cultures — evident in his generous gifts of time talent and knowledge — is clearly a driving force behind these efforts,” Jany said in an email about Siva’s work opened the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center in Banning One devoted student at the learning center is Mark Araujo-Levinson a 25-year-old Latino who found the classes through a Google search The Riverside resident’s great-grandfather was Mixtec and Araujo-Levinson’s fascination with languages began during childhood But it wasn’t until after he had graduated high school and some friends told him about the Native American dialects in the region that he began to wonder why he hadn’t heard of them before That curiosity set him on a journey to learn more about the Indigenous languages of California — and led him to Siva in 2017 Mark Araujo-Levinson owns Dorothy Ramon’s book “Wayta’ Yawa’ (Always Believe).” The book was the culmination of a 12-year project with linguist Eric Elliott (Christina House / Los Angeles Times) “At first he became more encouraging,” Araujo-Levinson said “These past years have truly been a blessing for me It means a lot to me that he taught me the language Araujo-Levinson, a mathematics student at Cal State San Bernardino who views grammatical rules like equations or theorems, shares his love of languages — including the Serrano dialects — on his YouTube channel and even earned a job with the Morongo Cultural Heritage Department as a language preservation specialist. Siva relishes having such a natural — if unconventional — student. “He surprises everyone with his ability to pick up and to understand and all that’s required to write,” Siva said. “Not many people can do that.” About two years ago, Araujo-Levinson translated a tale told in 1918 by Yuhaaviatam leader Santos Manuel to anthropologist J.P. Harrington. The story, titled “What Owl Said” and initially written in English and Spanish, was translated into Serrano with Siva’s help. Kwenevu’ kesha’ ’aweerngiva.’ (There was a bad storm.) Hakupvu’ weerngtu.’ (It was raining a lot.) The story describes the darkened skies and four boys playing in the rain. Then an owl visits an old man who was sleeping. The owl tells him to sing and play his rattle in the morning. The story ends with the old man’s music chasing away the rain. Puuyu’ taaqtam hihiim taamiti.’ Puuyu’ peehun ’a’ayec ‘amay’ nyihay kwana.’ (All the people saw the sun. They were all happy.) Kwenemu ’api’a’ puuyu’ taaqtam poi’cu’ chaatu.’ (After that, all the people began to sing.) The end of such storytelling — in the native Serrano language — is what Siva fears. He never set out to become Morongo’s tribal historian. As a teenager, he wanted to play the saxophone but after decades as a teacher, from elementary schools to universities, he understood the responsibility to preserve his language. He said his family used to struggle for the right word in Serrano and came up short. “They would say, ‘Oh well, so long, language,’ ” he said. “That was the ending of our ways, you know,” Siva said of the long-ago celebrations on the reservation.” Without having those things ... without having the ceremonies, they were gone,” he said of the Indigenous culture, language and songs. “We’d hate to lose him,” Siva said. “He’s just one of those talents. It’s great to see him teaching it. Teaching it is so important now.” Siva recalled his aunt telling a story of how her grandfather was once approached by a neighboring tribal community, who admitted it had lost its songs to honor the dead. It was a humbling experience, she said, and Morongo offered to teach the community the Serrano songs. He explained that the songs are from the creator and meant for all of God’s children. But the experience left an impression on the family — especially on him, Siva said. “My great-grandfather told his family: ‘You have to remember your culture and language, or else you’ll be left a wandering tribe.’” Nathan Solis reports on breaking news with the Fast Break team at the Los Angeles Times. but sometimes it's nice when a brew brings the heat Green Flash Brewing Company in California proves the point with Dia De Los Serranos a lovely double stout with a serious hot pepper kick a coffee-like bitterness is prominent and the body is thick The aroma is all malts and coffee and serrano chiles and see how the flavor changed as the beer warmed up this brew is rich in flavor and that serrano wallop kicks in hard at the finish I will be picking another peck of this peppered prize The stout flavor plays very nicely with the serranos giving the beer an almost Mexican molé quality The brewery suggests paring Dio De Los Serranos with barbecue or other spicy foods; that's a decision that you'll have to make depending on your own tolerance for big flavors This beer is intense enough to stand up to any food you serve with it I think I would go with a big omelet-and-bacon sandwich because peppers are great with breakfast foods Dio De Los Serranos is 8.8 percent alcohol The beer began its history as a cask ale in a San Diego tavern and is now available all year in 22-ounce bottles use a snifter if you want to boost that pepper aroma to high intensity and if you are wondering if a pepper-popper of a beer might actually make you thirsty there are other quality beers infused with peppers out there: • Stone Brewing Company's Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers would be an excellent choice for someone seeking a lower alcohol option • Habanero Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing Company is a hot India pale ale at 7 percent ABV • If you are in the Mansfield area, grab yourself some of Phoenix Brewing Company's Santa Muerte spiced imperial chocolate stout Santa Muerte's pepper vibe is not as intense as that of Dia De Los Serranos and I am slowly working my way through them (KTVZ) – Nearly a week after a 70-year-old real estate investor and developer was shot and killed in the driveway of his home just east of Bend Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel confirmed the cause of death Friday and said it “remains a very active investigation.” (Leonard) Peverieri was shot and killed in the driveway of his home" on Los Serranos Drive "We’ve been gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses on a daily basis since the shooting.” Deschutes County sheriff's deputies on Monday identified the homicide victim as a friend recalled Peverieri as a successful and ambitious but gentlemanly real estate investor and developer Anyone with "information relevant to this case” was asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 541-693-6911 Peverieri’s family is requesting privacy during this time.” NewsChannel 21 was contacted Monday by someone who said Peverieri was a friend and former client who was a real estate investor and developer with his real estate investments," Jim Floyd said County property tax records show Peverieri owned several properties and also bought the tiny town of Millican east of Bend in 2010 He was also a recreational marijuana producer before the Oregon Liquor Control Commission revoked his license for 13 violations in 2018 said he sold Peverieri a home about seven years ago and they stayed in contact over the years “Other things he would like to do is deep sea fishing down in Mexico and so forth," Floyd said I didn’t have the privilege of knowing all of them and maybe other kids that I didn’t know about investigating the circumstances surrounding Peverieri's death and collecting evidence Initially termed a suspicious death investigation nearby residents had been advised to make sure their homes outbuildings and vehicles were secured and report anything suspicious in the area Janes said deputies responded around 5:30 a.m the death was determined to be suspicious,” Janes said in a brief initial news release Janes said it had been determined to be a homicide but added "Detectives do not believe there is still a suspect in the vicinity of the crime scene." A man suspected of shooting and killing a man was barricaded inside the home, but surrendered after a four-hour standoff. Residents help move police tape to allow a San Bernardino County SWAT truck to get by on Valle Vista Drive near where a man barricaded himself for four hours inside a Chino Hills house. Authorities gather on Valle Vista Drive near the house on Val Verde Drive where a suspected gunman was believed to be. Dozens of Chino, Chino Hills, Ontario and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officers were called to the area after the 2 p.m. shooting. Dozens of heavily armed police officers and SWAT team members surrounded a home in the Los Serranos area of Chino Hills on Tuesday afternoon after a man suspected of shooting and killing another man barricaded himself in. Donald McCarthy, 53, of Chino Hills surrendered and was arrested at his home at 4361 Val Verde Drive after a four-hour standoff that prompted a huge police response involving Chino, Chino Hills and Ontario police departments and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s SWAT team. Mr. McCarthy is being held on $1.75 million bail on a felony count of murder at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Superior Court. The victim was identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office Thursday as Robert Burdett of Brea. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Chino Valley Fire District paramedics. Many neighbors on Val Verde Drive and the surrounding streets were kept away from their homes until late Tuesday as homicide investigators began looking into why the 53-year-old man was shot and killed around 2:30 p.m. “There was an argument between the suspect and the victim, but details on what they argued about are not clear at this time,” said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Bachman.  Mr. Burdett owns a vacant piece of land next to Mr. McCarthy’s home, Mrs. Bachman said.  Mr. Burdett was there for landscape maintenance when the argument began, she added. Police positioned themselves around a three-block area surrounding the home, closing streets and evacuating many people in nearby homes. Some residents were told to stay inside their homes, police said. A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s helicopter flew overhead as did at least three television news helicopters watching over the scene as officers armed with rifles converged on the house. “Detectives continued phone contact with Mr. McCarthy when he eventually exited the home and surrendered,” Mrs. Bachman said. By 6:32 p.m., Mr. McCarthy was taken into custody without further incident. With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, the mountainous Los Serranos province of Valencia is perfect for trail running enthusiasts – here’s why you should consider it for your next active holiday abroad. Is this little-known Spanish province the hidden gem of Europe’s trail running destinations? Located to the north-west of the city of Valencia, in south-east Spain close to the Balearic Sea coast, Los Serranos is an interior Valencian district you’ve probably never heard of. But perhaps that should change, because this mountainous area is being billed as a must-visit destination for trail runners. Loosely translated to English as either “the mountains”, “highlanders” or “men of the hills”, Los Serranos is as adventurous as the name suggests. Consisting of 19 small municipalities and covering an area of 1,400km2 with a very diverse mix of landscapes, Los Serranos is home to some of the highest mountains in the whole comunidades autónomas of Valencia, in the foothills of the Sierra Javalambre. It’s also home to dynamic river valleys, wild forests and so much more. The local tourist board describes the area as follows: “a mountainous landscape, crossed by rivers and ravines, Los Serranos offers an ideal setting for lovers of hiking, climbing and observing native flora and fauna”. Plus the area receives a whopping 300 days of sunshine every year, so – unlike the grey and rainy UK – you’re likely to be trail running in glorious conditions, whether you head to Spain in the spring or summer, or for a winter sun break. Whether you’re visiting the municipalities of Chulilla, Sot de Chera, Aras de los Olmos, Calles, Villar del Arzobispo or the capital Chelva, there is so much adventure to be discovered in Los Serranos. One particular highlight is the Turia River, which meanders through narrow canyons to form a mesmerising landscape of gorges and waterfalls, with the beautiful Benagéber Reservoir at its epicentre.  But there are many other options too. In other words, Los Serranos is perfectly set up for adventurous, active holiday-makers, with a geographical area “full of secrets to discover”, as the local tourist board boasts. For more information visit comunitatvalenciana.com, and check out our top 4 reasons to consider Los Serranos for your next trail running holiday below. This region has no shortage of epic trail running routes. Many are used for official races, but you can follow the same itineraries independently. Excellent options include the Trail de las Tres Culturas (a climb to the Pico de Chelva), the Turia Valley Trail in Gestalgar, the Bomba Trail in Alpuente  and the Chulilla Trail, to name but a few. Affordable and regular flights are available to Valencia from a broad range of UK airports, including Bristol, London Gatwick and Manchester. Once in Spain, an excellent road network into the rural areas ensures your transfer to the Los Serranos mountains will be far from arduous. One of the pure joys of trail running is – after you’ve smashed out the miles – you can indulge in whatever food you fancy. And the options in Los Serranos are plentiful. Local delicacies and homemade products include migas, gazpacho serrano and homemade sausages. There is an excellent network of rural accommodations in Los Serranos. Whether you want to stay at a modern hotel, idyllic farm stay, boutique B&B or even a campsite, your accommodation choice will add a sense of homely, authentic comfort to your holiday in this part of Valencia. Although it didn’t have any sci-fi elements or the usual cliffhanger of J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof‘s series the Spanish series began to pull too many plot twists that made it get lost along the way leaving Diego a widower for the second time Teté and Guille got involved with each other -as their older siblings had done at the beginning- and even little Curro became a petty criminal the scriptwriters were in trouble: how could they generate a round ending that would put everything in its place they decided that the end of the series would end right where it began: the morning after the wedding Diego wakes up and realizes that he has dreamed it all his young children uncorrupted and everything in its place the series ended with a mythical scene that we all remember: dressed as children but now grown up the children of Diego and Lucia meet for breakfast as at the beginning of the series It seemed that nothing had happened and that’s how they wanted to show it Remembered as one of the worst endings in history the conclusion of Los Serrano was quite curious and raised some controversy in its day it was seen as a fun resource that is still alluded to today one of the most striking ingredients of the series was its use of music The well-remembered introduction to the episodes was the song Uno más uno son siete composed by Mikel Erentxun but performed by Fran Perea Fran Perea’s character was building his own musical career throughout the series and themes such as La chica de al lado or La vida al revés were the backbone of the structure of Los Serrano who played an important role in the series Los Serrano also served to boost the career of El sueño de Morfeo a group that came to represent our country in Eurovision as the singer Raquel del Rosario appeared as Marcos’ girlfriend for a time a group that I have already mentioned above but which was aimed at a young audience and sought to enter the postureo rap trend that marked those unenviable 2000s In spite of having been a summary of Spain in the 2000s and serving as a generational portrait Los Serrano had a very interesting presence outside our country The original version was broadcast in dozens of countries from northern and eastern Europe such as Serbia Montenegro and Finland -where it was a real phenomenon- to all of Latin America several versions of the series were made in other countries: in Portugal it was called Os Serranos Undoubtedly, Los Serrano was an unprecedented success that made clear the good work of Spanish fiction, and served as a precedent for everything that came after. Evidently, the success of Money Heist would not exist without Los Serrano Some of the links added in the article are part of affiliate campaigns and may represent benefits for Softonic Cultural journalist specialized in film, series, comics, video games, and everything your parents tried to keep you away from during your childhood.
