The Jefferson County Commonwealth's Attorney Office said Moises May
was recommended a sentence of 35 years in prison after he was found guilty on felony charges of human trafficking
kidnapping and intimidation and misdemeanor charges of harassment
May will be formerly sentenced July 2 in Jefferson County Circuit Court
“This was a deeply emotional case for all involved
and I commend the diligent and hard work of our Special Victims Unit prosecutors in getting justice for the victim,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina Whethers said
“Human trafficking will never have a place in our community
and this outcome sends a strong message that we will stand up against these despicable acts.”
Maxwell Gosman also thanked the woman as well as local agencies who assisted in her rescue
“I want to commend the bravery and resilience of the victim in this case
without whom we could not have achieved justice
A victory in this case will hopefully bring some meaningful closure amid very difficult circumstances,” Gosman said
“I also want to commend the outstanding work of Louisville Metro Police Det
whose investigative initiative was critical in ensuring that the defendant was held accountable for his horrific crimes.”
More: Man accused of chaining woman to floor in Park Hill pleads not guilty
LMPD officers responded to a two-story house in the 1700 block of Bolling Avenue in the Park Hill neighborhood in August 2023 after a call came in from neighbors reporting a woman screaming for help
Officers discovered the first floor of the house was barricaded and that all the doors were screwed shut
Ladders were reportedly required to gain access to the second floor of the home
where the woman was found chained to the floor by a metal dog collar
The Courier Journal does not name victims of crimes unless they choose to be identified
May and the woman were arguing when May allegedly grabbed the woman and held her down on a bathroom floor "while he used a machete to cut off a majority of her hair." May then "slapped the victim around" before she was able to leave
May allegedly threatened to kill the victim multiple times
tying a metal dog chain around her neck and bolting her to the floor
He then took her phone so she could not call for help
The woman was later able to break open a window and scream for help, prompting bystanders to call the police, the citation said. LMPD, along with Louisville Fire and Rescue, responded to the call and were able to rescue the victim and treat her for minor injuries

Racing Louisville FC midfielder Ary Borges has been suspended for an additional three matches for pushing the center referee after a recent match
Borges, a Brazilian international, had already served a one-match ban over the weekend after receiving a red card at the conclusion of Louisville's 3-3 draw with the Portland Thorns on April 27
The match featured 41 combined fouls, a new NWSL record
The National Women's Soccer League announced on Monday that its Disciplinary Committee issued the additional three-game sentence following review of the altercation
"The NWSL has a zero-tolerance policy regarding abuse of officials and will continue to uphold the integrity of the game and the conduct expected of all players
coaches and club personnel," the league said in a statement
Portland scored an equalizer from the penalty spot in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time to earn a 3-3 draw
Louisville led 3-1 in the first half before conceding penalty kicks in stoppage time of each half
The Thorns' equalizer came following a sequence in stoppage time in which referee Corbyn May initially called a foul on Portland defender Reyna Reyes, but reversed the call to a Thorns penalty kick after video review showed Louisville forward Emma Sears stepped on Reyes' foot
Racing Louisville assistant coach Sergio González was also ejected after the second penalty was awarded
Borges posted a story to her Instagram account calling May's refereeing "a shame."
it is not acceptable to have someone commanding a match like it was today," Borges wrote
Louisville's Ary Borges battles for the ball with Portland's Mallie Mackenzie. Photo by Al Sermeno/ISI Photos/Getty ImagesThorns midfielder and Canada captain Jessie Fleming lamented both the refereeing and her opponents after the match
"I do think that match can't keep happening in this league," Fleming said
and I think it's embarrassing for Louisville as a club
so I think I'm very proud that we were able to find a way to come back from that and to get points out of that game
probably one of -- if not the most -- frustrating match I've ever been a part of as a player
I think the league needs to look at that closely
I think Louisville should be embarrassed."
Borges posted to Instagram after Fleming's comments
"For those who had two questionable penalties and spent the whole game throwing themselves in and around the penalty box
please take a moment to reflect and not talk about my team," Borges wrote
On Monday, the NWSL Disciplinary Committee also issued an additional one-match ban to Washington Spirit head coach Jonatan Giráldez for his actions in a 3-0 loss to NJ/NY Gotham FC on April 26
Giráldez was ejected from the match in stoppage time of the match. He served his suspension for the red card on Friday, in Washington's 4-3 loss to Angel City FC
The NWSL Disciplinary Committee issued the additional suspension, which Giráldez will serve on Saturday against Chicago Stars FC
because he "failed to exit the field as required" following his ejection

Southbound Interstate 65 in Louisville near the John F
Kennedy Memorial Bridge is closed May 4 due to a crash that left the cab of a tractor trailer hanging off the bridge
Louisville Fire and Rescue crews successfully rescued the driver of the tractor trailer in about 30 minutes after arriving at the scene of the crash
Louisville Division of Fire spokesperson Donovan Sims said in a statement
A rescuer from Louisville Fire was lowered into the cab via a high point rope system
A preliminary investigation showed the trailer was heading southbound when the driver lost control and struck the rail of the bridge
causing the cab to hang over the rail with the driver inside
LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said in a statement at 10:40 a.m
No other vehicles were involved in the crash
Officials are still investigating what caused the driver to lose control of the trailer
The eastbound Interstate 64 ramp from the Kennedy Bridge is also closed due to debris on the roadway, according to TRIMARC
It is unclear how long the road closures will last
The closures were still in place as of 3 p.m
In a news conference hours after the rescue operation
Louisville Fire Chief Brian O'Neill said the department trains its crews for situations like the one on the Kennedy Bridge
We certainly don't want to minimize the danger that's there
but that's what you hired those firefighters to do

(WAVE) - A man is dead and a woman is injured in a shooting in Louisville’s University neighborhood early Sunday morning
officers were called to the 400 block of University Boulevard where they found two people who had been shot
Both were taken to UofL Hospital where one of the victims
The Jefferson County Coroner later identified him as 32-year-old Bradley May
is being treated for what police say are non-life-threatening injuries
Police said they believe all parties are accounted for
Louisville is known nationally as basketball country
But those who live in the city are well aware of its love affair with volleyball
The sport's NCAA championship returned to Louisville in December — 12 years after it first hosted the event — and left a grand financial mark
making for a total impact of $15.3 million
It's tied with the 2023 NCAA men's basketball regional for the highest economic impact of any NCAA championship event the city has hosted
These numbers were determined by the Economic Impact Calculator from Destinations International
which Louisville Tourism has used since 2017
is "the global association for destination professionals," and its calculator is an industry standard used by more than 375 destination entities in North America
The calculator takes two types of data into account when evaluating the economic impact of a given event:
Event-specific data includes information like type of event (in this case
attendance (including athletes participating in the tournament or meet)
Louisville Tourism gets this information from the event producer
City-specific data remains unchanged by Louisville Tourism. This information takes into account eight different sources of industry information like local taxes (such as sales tax, which is 6% in Kentucky)
The 2012 national semifinals between Oregon-Penn State and Texas-Michigan entertained 13,385 in-person fans
making those the 13th most attended volleyball match at the time
The regional final between SDSU and Creighton drew 20,051 fans
Center's 22,090-seat capacity that makes it optimal for hosting high-profile events

- While there are still six months until year two of the Pat Kelsey era gets underway
summer hoops in the city of Louisville is just around the corner
the Louisville men's basketball alumni team known as 'The Ville' will embark on their third run in the event
former Cardinals sharpshooter Luke Hancock
after being a player-coach and an assistant coach for the team's first two years of existence
moves to the lead chair to assume the role as head coach
as well as The Ville's head coach from year one in Mark Lieberman
"We're very excited to get year three going for The Ville," Hancock said Monday
"Our enthusiasm is in part because of the excitement built from the last two seasons
I think we had a great foundation in those two years
and it's definitely put us on the right foot to get year three started."
The Ville has three former Louisville players suiting up to take the court in the 2025 TBT
Russ Smith is returning for his third go-round
while Montrezl Harrell and David Johnson are returning after making their debut last summer
Former Kansas State/ETSU guard David Sloan has also joined the fold
Once again, The Ville will serve as the host for one of the TBT's eight regional sites, with games taking place at Freedom Hall. The Louisville Regional will take place on July 19-23, and tickets can be purchased at this link
Siva and Lieberman took time to meet with the media
They discussed The Ville's third run in the TBT

Pick your favorite Cardinal athlete from this field and bet the corresponding horse tomorrow
An absolute specimen who checks every box on paper
but has given a couple of puzzling performances that have left people with questions about whether or not he can be truly great
I’m going to go ahead and apologize to Warren here
I just pulled up the men’s golf roster and picked a freshman who hadn’t played a ton
Clearly an elite athlete relative to the rest of the world
but doesn’t belong with the rest of the field here just yet
Final Gambit — Terrence Edwards (men’s basketball)
Will have you a little bit worried early on
will hit his stride at about the midway point
and will be absolutely flying by the end of the race
American Promise — Mackenly Randolph (women’s basketball)
Great pedigree here and a very well-known connection (D
but has not been able to put it all together against the best of the best just yet
Admire Daytona — Isla Juffermans (women’s basketball)
Both had to make insanely long trips to get here (Juffermans from Australia
Admire Daytona from Japan after a victory in Dubai)
but immediate success of the highest degree wasn’t on the menu for Juffermans (who averaged a respectable 6.9 minutes per game as a freshman)
Luxor Cafe — Sananda Fru (men’s basketball)
the Japanese runner has been remarkably impressive overseas
but there’s no way to know for certain how that’s going to translate to his first experience in America
but certainly seems to have all the makings of a long-term star
Very talented and loves to come from off the pace to win in extremely dramatic fashion
Flying Mohawk — Frank Anselem-Ibe (men’s basketball)
Qualified to join the fray in Louisville at the very last minute
much like the final scholarship member of the 2024-25 Cards
East Avenue — Taj Roberts (women’s basketball)
but burns pretty hot and cold for the time being
Publisher has never crossed the finish line first
and Tyler Shough had never finished a season healthy
Shough delivered on his chance on the big stage and now Publisher has a chance to follow suit
Tiztastic — Khani Rooths (men’s basketball)
but both need to prove they can get it done against the best of the best
with Moss playing for USC —arguably the best producer of quarterbacks in the sport — and RJ being trained by Kenny McPeek
A great underdog story
and a very consistent performer who has the ability to be even more than that
Sandman — Chucky Hepburn (men’s basketball)
No reason to think he won’t put himself in a position to be right there at the end
Sovereignty — Jayden Ulrich (track and field)
You might not hear about him/her as much as some of the other horses/athletes here
but that’s just because he hasn’t run is as many races and her sport isn’t as high profile
Both are very accomplished and live shots to win every time they compete
Chunk of Gold — Adrian Wooley (men’s basketball)
The sport’s insiders love Chunk of Gold way more than the general public seems to
Wooley is a player not to known to many general college basketball fans
but who is loved by college basketball insiders
Owen Almighty — Aidan McCool (men’s basketball)
Just happy to be here at the end of the bench/starting gate
Baeza — J’Vonne Hadley (men’s basketball)
It took a new NCAA rule/late scratch for them to be here
but they are both more than capable of producing at the highest level

died April 16 following a car crash in the Tyler Park neighborhood
Louisville Metro Police have said officers located Caroline with a gunshot wound unrelated to the crash
LMPD spokesperson John Bradley said the agency is investigating the accident as a non-criminal shooting
along with two other students from her class who've passed away
Her family will attend the ceremony and accept the diploma for Caroline
who lived with the mantra of "love God and love people."
"It's never going to replace her walking on that stage because she worked so hard," Jim said
"The consolation is that because of that hard work

lived a life dedicated to her faith and to those she encountered
Her celebration of life on April 22 drew a crowd of hundreds from Louisville to Bowling Green to Marion County
with Caroline going on several mission trips to Guatemala
"It didn't matter if she spent five minutes with you or if she spent weeks or years with you
and that's intentionally how she was made," her father said
"She didn't care in a world that people try to separate themselves as being rich
She saw a life that could be beautiful regardless of who you were
Scott Long, head pastor at the Highview Baptist Church Southside Campus in Louisville
where Caroline had dual membership along with Muldraugh Hill Baptist Church
echoed that Caroline put her trust in her faith and Jesus and set an example for others
"She truly was a light," he said at Caroline's celebration service
"That's a testament not just to obviously her faith but the way that was raised."
which he took over when she left for college and still does weekly
"She was always proud because it was just another way for her to spread the message," he said
She continued her education at Western Kentucky University
where she majored in biology and minored in chemistry
She'd originally pursued a broadcast journalism degree in her undergraduate education before discovering that dentistry was her calling
"Her whole idea of changing her major was on this idea that 'how could she better be able to reach people and help people and love people?' and she believed that it was through dentistry
where she often focused on providing dental care to children
Jim said Caroline's name will be placed on a legacy wall in Guatemala
Dental school classmates frequently described Caroline as an encourager
who would send text messages and leave sticky notes for those who might've needed a pick-me-up ahead of an exam or before a deadline for a difficult assignment
"She was all about anything she could do to pour into other people
That's how she lived — even if it meant not leaving enough for her," Jim said
she wanted to be there for whoever needed her."
Her father also recalls a full circle moment with Caroline's college sorority, Alpha Epsilon Pi, which raised money for the Ronald McDonald House
Jim said she was born premature and rushed to Norton Children's Hospital, then-Kosair Children's Hospital, with a brain bleed. While Caroline was there, he and his wife stayed at a Ronald McDonald House nearby. He said her recovery was a "blessing" and that "she defied the odds."
"I remember she came home because they were raising money for Ronald McDonald House, and she wanted my wife and I to sit down with her and do a video — a testimonial of why the Ronald McDonald House was so important to us and why it was so important to her," he said. "It came full circle with her sorority and knowing her own mom and dad had benefited tremendously."
Caroline leaves behind a brother and sister, who Jim said she treated like a "mother hen."
"She would show them the ropes. They looked up to her. She would lead the way," he said. "She was the best big sister that they could ever be blessed with."
Jim said Caroline made a difference in people's lives, putting words into action.
"She wasn't trying to change the world. She just wanted to do her part to make it a little more beautiful," he said. "That's how she lived her life — she didn't live it with a bumper sticker on a car, she walked it."

If your ears are burning, Louisville, it could be because Miki Abraham, one of the leads in the Tony Award winning musical "Shucked," has been talking about you
The PNC Broadway in Louisville production of the musical comedy arrives at the Kentucky Center May 13-18 and Abraham
who plays the part of Lulu in the show's first national tour
is thrilled to be bringing the musical comedy to an audience in her home state
"I have been with the show since 2022 and this is my first time touring through Louisville and I am so excited," Abraham told the Courier Journal
"It feels very much like a coming home moment."
The Wall Street Journal calls "Shucked" "flat out funny."
Abraham said the show’s opening song is “Corn” and it’s a four-minute-long opening number about — corn
More: Bonnie Raitt, Wilco, Kevin Hart and 19 more music events happening in Louisville in May
"I will see the audience sometimes look around confused like
'What have we bought a ticket to?'" Abraham said
"Then I will start to see them start to laugh and warm up to the world of Cobb County after that."
who won a Tony for writing the stage adaptation of "Tootsie."
"What is so cool about this musical is that it is completely original and many musicals these days are based on movies or a revival," said the actor
who has to leave our safe little town and go out into the world to find help
She brings back a con man and that creates a sticky situation."
"That was the first time I left Kentucky for a professional gig," Abraham said
I am 33 years old now and looking back on that time seems like a lifetime ago."
More: Coming to a Louisville stage in May: 'Shucked,' 'Half Baked' & 5 more shows to see
The work eventually led to auditioning for "Shucked" in 2022
when they understudied the role of Lulu both regionally and on Broadway
Abraham is traveling on the first national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical to over 30 cities and is excited about bringing the show to Kentucky
"My parents are both coming from Paducah and I have a lot of relatives coming to the show from Mt
"And I have professors and friends coming to the show from NKU
While you can bank on your family loving the show of which you are part, Abraham is hopeful Louisville audiences are also ready for a bushel of fun
but it is neither political nor does it try to push an agenda
"Shucked" is a story about the human condition that also happens to be very funny
"'Shucked' is about family and the fact that we have way more capacity for love and change than we think we do," Abraham told the Courier Journal
"Just because something feels comfortable doesn't mean it is the only way it can ever be."

many sections are represented by seamount groups known by their own names
the three oceanic plateaus are shown that are thought to have made up Ontong-Java Nui together
Shatsky Rise and Mid-Pacific Mountains erupted near a spreading center (likely causing plume motion5)
while Rurutu-Arago and Samoa erupted within the growing Pacific plate
Louisville’s position shows the approximate modeled track for the updated model rotation
strongly leached samples that have undergone significant phosphatization tend to have highly radiogenic 143Nd/144Nd of unclear origin
Nd isotopes decouple from Sr isotopes (panel D) and Hf isotopes (panel E); obscuring some source mantle information
176Hf/177Hf provide a more useful “isotopic fingerprint” of the HIMU-to-FOZO provenance characteristic of other Rurutu-Arago seamounts than plots using 143Nd/144Nd
and are consistent with interpretations from the Pb isotopes
The FOZO Louisville hotspot track and older Ellice Basin Seamounts as well as Seka Seamount; which are likely FOZO-to-DMMlike with Pb isotopes partly overprinted by seawater U ingrowth
Only two samples from EX1606 had material suitable for age dating
with one yielding a 91.3 Ma age that confirms that the Rurutu-Arago plume was active in the Wake region
The second successful sample predates passage of this area of the Pacific crust over the Rurutu-Arago hotspot and is excluded as a constraint on the modified stage pole
The two unsuccessful samples lacked a statistically robust plateau and were therefore inconclusive
Open circles represent Wake area seamounts and their ages
predating the 80–100 Ma time period modeled
and C-F) Y/Y* versus radiogenic isotope compositions
206Pb/204Pb (A) exhibits only a weak correlation with Th/U
while 208Pb/204Pb (B) is much more strongly correlated
indicating modification of U abundances in the EX1606 samples
143Nd/144Nd (E) exhibits some correlation versus Y/Y*
while Pb and Sr isotopes show no correlation

Secretariat. 1973. The fastest mile-and-a-quarter in Kentucky Derby history
But did you know that more than 50 years after Big Red ran for the roses (and then the Triple Crown)
his greatness still factors prominently in American horse racing
In fact, a search of pedigrees shows every horse running in the 151st Kentucky Derby is a descendant of Secretariat
if you go back six generations in most horses
you'll find they're a descendant of some great
"It’s one of those stats," Derby contending trainer Whit Beckman said
"It’s bound to happen at some point with how much he shows up in every single pedigree
who claims Secretariat in his pedigree five generations back
Secretariat was the sire of Weekend Surprise
(That's the great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather
who went on to win the Belmont Stakes by clocking the second-fastest running behind his damsire Secretariat
shows up in the third generation of Render Judgment and Sovereignty (fifth-generation descendant of Secretariat)
as well as the fourth generation of Chunk of Gold and Journalism (sixth generation)
Secretariat was also the sire of Terlingua
was once the leading sire in North America
(He remained in Kentucky to stand his entire career.)
Storm Cat was the third sire of Final Gambit
making him a fifth-generation Secretariat descendant
(You can find Storm Cat in last year's Kentucky Derby winner's lineage
making Secretariat his great-great-great-great-great grandsire.)
American Promise has a long pedigree to Secretariat
Indy appears through his mother's line four generations ago
East Avenue can claim Secretariat in his lineage seven generations ago
While Publisher has Storm Cat in his lineage
his shorter relation to Big Red is through his fourth dam Secrettame
Owen Almighty is a fifth-generation Secretariat descendant
while Baeza is a sixth-generation descendant
whose lineage to Secretariat goes back only four generations
In all, Secretariat sired more than 660 registered foals.
And 52 years after crossing the wire at Churchill Downs
one of his descendants is about to become a Kentucky Derby champion
