Brighton’s coach He does a nice job pressuring the ball on defense for us Some kids just have that confidence and that swagger Lovejoy’s second-quarter explosion helped bring the Bulldogs back from an early 17-9 deficit Ryan Nosek hit four 3-pointers in the first three minutes and 15 seconds of the game for Linden which hit six 3-pointers as a team in the first quarter It was Lovejoy’s turn from beyond the arc in the second quarter his fourth 3-pointer giving Brighton a 33-32 halftime lead The Bulldogs built their lead to 52-41 late in the third quarter before the Eagles made a small run the opening half One of those scores was set up by recovering a Lovejoy fumble and the fourth first-half TD came on a pick six Argyle added a touchdown on its second play of the third period to continue the efficient offense and kept Lovejoy at arm’s length from there on out The Eagles ran the ball on 37 of their 43 offensive plays racking up 176 of their 317 yards on the ground along with some opportunistic pass plays an abundance of emotion — those are all catalysts for playing really good football,” Argyle coach Todd Rodgers said “We really energized the offense this week We had ’em tracked on where they were going to line up [defensively] so we got ’em blocked and handed the ball off.” It all amounted to a convincing victory for the Eagles in the 5A Division II Region I final at Nathaniel Bruce recovered and Bruce later forced a fumble that Brody Bomar recovered Bracy’s second pick helped set the Eagles up for their final score which helped put the contest completely out of one TD added a 1-yard scoring run less than a minute later to give the Eagles a 21-10 edge Argyle extended that lead with Peschel’s pick six to make it 28-10 The Eagles went up 35-10 just 41 seconds into the third quarter on a 73-yard TD pass from Gasperson to Caldwell Caldwell finished with 113 yards and the one score on two catches the other of which was an acrobatic play as he fell to the he also wrote lyrics using Elijah Lovejoy’s words as a guide “We interpolated quite a few of Elijah Lovejoy’s own writings as well as statements made by his enemies — political defenders of slavery,” Kamiya tells me as well as family histories written by other relatives “[There was] a book written by his brothers Lovejoy that has a lot of lengthy quotations including poems that he wrote,” Kamiya says researched the language of the time to better understand Elijah Lovejoy’s rhetoric and its influences from the era’s church preachers “I didn’t want to write in that style,” she says “but I wanted to understand that sound.” would best tell Elijah Lovejoy’s story “Oratorios sound scary because it sounds very biblical like Handel’s Messiah,” she says I can’t call it ‘Elijah.’” She kept thinking about Lovejoy on his long trek to St and about the moment he’d found that calling in abolition work The oratorio’s title came to her: Elijah’s Call “The whole thing about ‘the call’ is someone walking walking with this constant motor with this ostinato rhythm underneath but then you also have the voices of the chorus like a Greek choir Where are you going?’ And they give him the courage to move forward.” Courage was certainly a necessity for an abolitionist in the slave state of Missouri Elijah Lovejoy published editorials that began as anti-slavery pieces eventually calling for universal emancipation Lovejoy’s enemies grew larger in rank Eventually Lovejoy left Missouri for the free state of Illinois and his family’s safety Settling across the Mississippi River in the town of Alton Lovejoy ordered a new printing press to begin his work again a violent mob formed and stormed the warehouse where the printing press was stored Reviewing the tragic events of Lovejoy’s life and death Allison Lovejoy thought long and hard on how to best evoke emotion through the oratorio Lovejoy’s choices of tempo and key are one piece of it it’s dynamic layering and buildup,” she says Lovejoy opted to tap a variety of influences for Elijah’s Call Lovejoy’s initial dive into her family history began around 2020 Lovejoy saw parallels between Elijah Lovejoy and Floyd — how their murders are part of a larger intersectional fight for justice and safekeeping of Black lives and those who advocate for them In choosing the narrator of Elijah’s Call Lovejoy found a perfect fit in Oakland-based civil rights activist and lawyer Walter Riley The father of musician and filmmaker Boots Riley and a longtime friend of Lovejoy Riley was immediately drawn to Elijah Lovejoy’s story “The idea of fighting slavery … and the history of those folks who were building a movement resonates with me,” he says “It’s the kind of work I do now: civil rights activism When I ask Lovejoy what it’s like working with Riley “It’s wonderful,” she says “I’ve always admired his insights His wisdom brings something to the piece that elevates it.” Elijah Lovejoy may not be widely known today but Lovejoy hopes the oratorio will help change that Elijah Lovejoy’s story is directly connected to modern social movements The phrase “I lit a lamp,” for example which appears more than once in the oratorio “I didn’t know that that [phrase] was a symbolic line — the lighting of the lamp of the Underground Railroad,” Lovejoy says “I use that throughout the oratorio to say the connection between Elijah Lovejoy and today’s fight for racial justice was instantaneous “It’s the exact kind of story we see today,” he tells me “It’s part of the struggle we face And every time we see an example from history from… the folks who came before us it’s useful to pay attention to that and then maybe we become a more…enlightened society.” He points a finger as he speaks “That’s what Elijah learned in this story He learned about and accepted the humanity of these Black folks…but they attacked him and killed him for it.” Before Lovejoy has to head back into dress rehearsal for the oratorio I ask what she hopes audiences will take away from Elijah’s Call and inspiration to stand together.” ‘Elijah’s Call’ premieres Sunday at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco
