“Are you talking about the cookies?” asks Thaddeus Pham as I enthusiastically chat with Raquel Curtis at Anh Chị Em Bakery’s weekly pop-up at Fishcake about an unrelated topic (Labubus)
and Thaddeus puts me on to Lovejoy Confections
Since he and I both adore his sister’s jasmine tea cake
On a Saturday morning, I track down these cookies at Try Coffee
Lovejoy Confections is set up at a table beside the counter with neat stacks of cookies and pastries on rustic wooden boards
Kimbro is a familiar name on the baking scene
He made arguably the city’s best chocolate chip cookies at The Curb in Kaimukī
Frolic editor Mari Taketa still gets rhapsodic about the natto Stroopwafel that Kimbro made one year for Natto Day
SEE ALSO: The Curb’s Cookies and Toasts Are Worth A Drive to Kaimukī
With buckwheat groats and cacao nibs in the mix
this cookie looks like a mineral deposit and is about as big as my hand
It has the perfect balance of not too sweet and a touch of salty with a soft
I’m not sure if I’ll like this since it has a strong cinnamon smell
but the chai flavor in the cookie is actually not strong
The brown butter maple crème filling makes it for me; it’s richly flavored yet almost fluffy in texture and addictive
Keep in mind that it’s a messy eating experience
You’ll get sugar all over your mouth and fingers
The Stroopwafel is the only cookie made fresh when you order it
Kimbro pops a couple of balls of batter into a little waffle iron
squeezes the shoyu caramel filling between them and puts a finishing shake of black sesame sugar
It only takes a few minutes and is well worth the wait when you get to enjoy a warm
It also walks the line of sweet and salty in the best way
chewy cookie is mildly sweet and reminds me of the kind that comes in a tin
I don’t quite get the makrut lime sugar flavor
though it might be too subtle to taste after eating all the other cookies
but I probably won’t get it again given the other more tantalizing options
I also try the lup cheong kolache bun ($8)
which is good but doesn’t stand out compared to the sweets
born from Kimbro’s desire to strike out with his own creations
he made savory pastries but wanted to branch out more
Kimbro credits reading and trial and error
“How do you make a dessert that’s craveable and not just sweet?” he asked himself
which led to the mash-ups of sweet and savory
drawing from Southeast Asian culinary influences and his experience at Asian restaurants
Lovejoy Confections will continue to pop up at Fishcake and Try Coffee

and musician James Lovejoy’s larger than life personality will live on
James succumbed to the cancer he had been fighting for almost a year
James was the first of four children and the only son
he never backed down from any sort of fight.
he chose to become a truck driver to continue seeing the world day in and day out.
most people knew James for his musical talent
Many nights were spent jamming with friends and singing old country songs
One of his favorite things to do was sing and play for his family
He would break out the old guitar after a long day of fishing
James leaves behind a large family who already miss him dearly
The mark James made on the world lives on in the many people who grieve him now
but never doubt that the world was a better place for having had the privilege of his presence.
private celebration for James in their own time
Those who would like to do something can make a donation in James’ name with the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Ralph was surrounded by his loving family members when he passed
Ralph Edward ("Tom") Lovejoy; and brother-in-law
He is survived by his two loving daughters
Katherine Ann Lovejoy and Lynn Lovejoy Krueger-Andes; son-in law
Matt Krueger-Andes; beloved granddaughters
Benner and Madelyn (and his first grandson expected in October); sister and best friend
Tessa Cooper (Jeff) and LeeAnn Bills (Noah); and beloved cousins who he adored
where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration
from West Virginia University School of Law
He had a long successful career in investment banking and finance that began in Pittsburgh after graduating law school and passing the CPA exam
His career success eventually brought him to Charlotte
where he built a beautiful family and continued in his professional endeavors
Ralph loved nothing more than his daughters and made time each day to be there for them and make them smile and laugh
From being the "Cheer Dad" at Lynn's cheer competitions to being the assistant coach for Katie's tennis team
he loved celebrating and supporting his girls
Ralph cherished quality time with each of his daughters
taking Katie to every horseback riding competition
Open (despite absolutely loving golf) to drive Lynn to camp every summer
As they "flew the nest," he wrote letters of advice to guide them and was there every day they needed him
proudly wearing their Hopkins and UGA gear everywhere he went
With two full-grown daughters and grandbabies
he stayed connected each day through thoughtful calls and messages
sending them a text every single morning with a special Dad Joke (or a meaningful message on Sundays) and video messages to his granddaughters for their birthdays
He never met a stranger and was a friend to many
Ralph will be remembered for his infectious smile
which his daughters intend to bring to the world
He loved to play and watch golf and was a devoted football (Brady!) fan with his nephews and son-in-law
Funeral information and arrangements will be announced in the near future
or monetary gifts to the American Red Cross
This mission was incredibly important to Ralph and he viewed it as a "gift of life." Ralph donated blood every 58 days
and was disappointed after his 70th birthday when he could no longer do "doubles" or platelets
Ralph was so proud to receive his 13-gallon pin the week he passed away
and pinned it to his hat to wear every day
It's our honor to award you this milestone pin
Your 104 lifetime donations have made a true difference in the lives of others
We're proud to celebrate this achievement with you." In Ralph's final message to his family
What we do for others can live on through eternity."

(WCHS) — What do you do if your parents are both talented artists
your father draws and they're both talented musicians as well
Ashley Lovejoy of South Charleston was left with little choice
She became a very talented multimedia artist herself and absolutely loves it
"I've been drawing my whole life ever since I was a little kid," Lovejoy said
"Some coloring books and crayons you know?."
Lovejoy has come a long way from childhood doodles with crayons
Lovejoy is now a gifted artist who works in different media
producing some of the most realistic pieces you'll ever see
"I think it's really satisfying being able to create something and make it look super realistic
or make it look weird." Lovejoy explained
but Ashley's work could be considered that way depending on your taste in art
After seeing many of her pieces on the walls depicting characters from horror films
it's easy to see how folks might leave with that impression
"I do tend to lean more toward the weird stuff
I like the darker stuff," Lovejoy said
"I try to incorporate other stuff that doesn't scare people."
That other stuff includes amazing commissions of family portraits
beloved pet paintings or anything else a potential customer may want
Lovejoy's largest piece to date is a huge portrait that hangs in her living room
the eye-catching painting is a departure from her normal work
"I decided to do a giant portrait of (Frank) Zappa," Lovejoy said
which is try to make it look exactly like the picture and hyper realistic
I wanted to make it colorful and vibrant and step out of my comfort zone."
While Ashley's work appeals to many people
she does it for several reasons including self-gratification and outside validation
"I like when my art speaks for itself," Lovejoy said
'That's awesome' and that makes me feel really good
All art is beautiful no matter what."

EAST LANSING — Lewis Lovejoy started the game off feeling himself and wanted to test his range
The freshman point guard for A&T Academy of Pontiac grabbed the pass after the opening tip and walked into a 3 a few feet behind the college line
A&T Academy of Pontiac coach Orlando Lovejoy Sr.
got on him immediately for his shot selection
"I was feeling good during the warmup line," Lewis said

The fatherly message resonated with Pontiac's freshman point guard, who went away from 3s after two misses early on. From there, he exclusively used his handle to navigate around the high pressure from Ishpeming Westwood in the Division 3 Michigan high school boys basketball semifinals at the Breslin Center
but made all eight shot attempts inside the arc to lead A&T Academy of Pontiac with 19 points and five assists in the Lions' dominant 76-40 win over Ishpeming Westwood to reach the first state championship game in school history
A&T jumped on Westwood with an opening 8-0 sparked by steals and blocks
which eventually morphed into a 36-15 lead by halftime
Lewis led the way with 13 first-half points
using his quickness to beat whoever Westwood put in front of him
He would get to his pullup jumper or floater between 10-15 feet
or hesitate to beat the last line of defense
Orlando credited the work Lewis puts in on his own
or working with college coaches such as former Mercy coach Mike Davis
who used to be the coach at University of Detroit Mercy

"Those guys get a lot of one-on-ones with them over at Oakland Fieldhouse
We go over there and get a lot of one-on-ones and he just gets it in

Westwood tried different defensive coverages in the third quarter
including doubling Lewis as he crossed halfcourt
but nothing translated to easy points for the Patriots
A&T continued to cruise in the halfcourt thanks to their point guard
while turning up the pressure defensively for easy transition points
or the Hicks brothers — Terrance and Teyshaun
who combined for 18 points — filled in the gaps
"We've been in the gym working together a lot
They are the first Pontiac team to reach the state final since Pontiac Northern repeated as Class A champions in 2001-02
And they are primarily led by a group entirely new to the school
who is in his first year as a high school head coach after spending time leading AAU teams and serving as an assistant or middle school coach in Detroit
I just was thinking that it was like another game
but it is way bigger than that," Orlando said

BRIGHTON — It took one game to realize Brandon Lovejoy was going to have a greater impact on Brighton’s basketball team as a junior this season
In the season opener, he made his presence known by scoring a career-high 25 points in a 68-57 victory over Linden
The closest he came to duplicating that output came when the Bulldogs needed someone to step up the most
Down 17 points at halftime against Hartland in the district semifinals
it appeared Brighton’s district championship drought was going to be extended to 17 seasons
It took everyone stepping up their game in the second half to pull off a monumental comeback
but it was Lovejoy who provided the bulk of the offense
He scored 17 of his team-high 22 points in the second half
who is the Livingston Daily Athlete of the Week
We didn’t want to lose to Hartland; that wasn’t our goal
but provided valuable experience and motivation for Lovejoy and a strong core of juniors going into next year
“We’ve got a lot of players who played in that game
so we’ve got a lot of experience playing in these types of games,” said Lovejoy
who had a team-high 12 points on four 3-pointers against Catholic Central
“It’s definitely going to be fun playing next year.”
It was more fun playing this season for Lovejoy
showing flashes of his potential with a 20-point performance against Howell
reaching double figures in 15 of 25 games for a team that had a balanced attack
“I would say Brandon is maybe our best two-way player on offense and defense,” Brighton coach Taylor Langley said
“He plays both sides of the ball really well and really consistently
“His bad games need to be more in the 10- to 12-point range; he’s capable of that
He just needs to learn to play in those tough games
those physical games a little bit so he can find the bucket when his shots are not falling.”

Two champions of Amazon Rainforest conservation have been awarded the inaugural Thomas E
Lovejoy Prize at the United Nations biodiversity summit
The cash prize of $100,000 each was awarded Oct
29 to agronomy and forest engineer Marc Dourojeanni from Peru and Indigenous advocate Belén Páez from Ecuador
The prize is in honor of renowned ecologist Thomas Lovejoy
dubbed “the father of biodiversity.” Both award winners received a framed plaque with a distinctive bow tie under glass
a favorite accessory of the late Lovejoy’s when he wasn’t wearing muddy field clothes during his decades of Amazon research
Dourojeanni won the award for his 50 years of work creating Peru’s protected area system
He has been a mentor to two generations of conservationists in the region and has served in leadership roles with the University San Martín de Porres
the International Union for Conservation of Nature
“Life is only worthwhile and interesting if it is about fighting for something more than just yourself,” Dourojeanni said in his acceptance speech
“It is only worthwhile if you feel useful and… what better than helping the Amazon?”
Co-winner Belén Páez has focused on climate change and post-extractive industry transitions across Ecuador and Peru
contributing to victories for the protection of forests and Indigenous territorial rights in the Ecuadorian Amazon
As the general secretary of the Amazon Sacred Headwaters Initiative
she led systemic transitions that echoed across the Andean Amazon
she has implemented innovative and effective programs to promote the rights and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples
“It is important to live with purpose and commitment
and the people who have protected it for generations,” Páez said
“In these forests there is a wisdom that we must not only listen to

he was a passionate champion for the conservation of the Amazon Rainforest
advocacy and a spirit of collaboration as he served on some 50 environmental boards over his lifetime

BRIGHTON — Missing back-to-back 3-point shots on the same possession early in a season-opening basketball game didn’t rattle the confidence of Brighton junior Brandon Lovejoy
and Lovejoy certainly wasn’t going to shy away from his next opportunity
‘Keep shooting; they’re gonna fall,’” Lovejoy said
“I put in a lot of work to get those shots off.”
Four of Lovejoy’s 3-point shots in the second quarter found the mark as he scored 14 points in that period alone
He finished with a career-high 25 points for the Bulldogs Monday night in a 68-57 victory over Linden
It was the fulfillment of the promise Lovejoy showed on one special night during his sophomore season when he scored a game-high 20 points in a 59-46 rivalry victory over Howell
He was under the radar for the most past last winter
averaging 3.4 points and being held scoreless in 10 of 23 games
“I’m being more of a scorer this year,” he said
I started six games last year and played a couple minutes
reps on varsity definitely helped me for this year.”
Lovejoy went 6-for-11 from 3-point range and 8-for-15 overall from the floor

Brighton coach Taylor Langley raised his eyebrows when told Lovejoy scored 25 points
but he wasn’t surprised the junior guard had that kind of night
“Wow,” Langley said after making his debut as Brighton’s coach
He does a nice job pressuring the ball on defense for us
Some kids just have that confidence and that swagger
Lovejoy’s second-quarter explosion helped bring the Bulldogs back from an early 17-9 deficit
Ryan Nosek hit four 3-pointers in the first three minutes and 15 seconds of the game for Linden
which hit six 3-pointers as a team in the first quarter
It was Lovejoy’s turn from beyond the arc in the second quarter
his fourth 3-pointer giving Brighton a 33-32 halftime lead
The Bulldogs built their lead to 52-41 late in the third quarter before the Eagles made a small run
cutting the deficit to 53-48 early in the fourth
That’s when Lovejoy hit back-to-back 3-pointers to keep Brighton safely ahead
Langley said it wasn’t part of Brighton’s game plan to feed the ball to Lovejoy
“We don’t really play that way,” Langley said
who can go for 20 points on this team on any given night
we’re going to trust them to have the confidence and the ability to knock down those shots
and I think there’s going to be a lot of other nights he does it this year
Vince Salmon and Luke Bellino each scored 11 points for Brighton

4 Argyle turned in an efficient offensive performance and forced five turnovers defensively in Friday’s 42-17 playoff win over Lucas Lovejoy
The Eagles led the contest 28-10 by halftime after scoring 21 offensive points on just 19 plays in the opening half
One of those scores was set up by recovering a Lovejoy fumble
and the fourth first-half TD came on a pick six
Argyle added a touchdown on its second play of the third period to continue the efficient offense and kept Lovejoy at arm’s length from there on out
The Eagles ran the ball on 37 of their 43 offensive plays
racking up 176 of their 317 yards on the ground along with some opportunistic pass plays
an abundance of emotion — those are all catalysts for playing really good football,” Argyle coach Todd Rodgers said
“We really energized the offense this week
We had ’em tracked on where they were going to line up [defensively]
so we got ’em blocked and handed the ball off.”
It all amounted to a convincing victory for the Eagles in the 5A Division II Region I final at Prosper ISD’s Children’s Health Stadium
earning the program its third state semifinal appearance in the last five years
Argyle (13-1) advances to face Dallas South Oak Cliff (12-2) in next week’s 5A DII state semifinal round
It’ll be a rematch of the 2022 5A DII state semifinal, which South Oak Cliff won 14-6 on the way to its second straight state championship
The Golden Bears fell to Port Neches-Groves in last year’s state title game but avenged that loss with a 56-14 win over the Indians in Friday’s Region II final
Argyle earned its rematch in part due to the five turnovers forced by its defense
Maliek Bracy intercepted two passes along with a third that was negated by a penalty
and Grayson Peschel returned a pick of his own for a touchdown
Max Bland also forced a fumble that Nathaniel Bruce recovered
and Bruce later forced a fumble that Brody Bomar recovered
Bracy’s second pick helped set the Eagles up for their final score
which helped put the contest completely out of reach
“I just did a lot of film study,” Bracy said of his interceptions
but we just had to keep going until the clock hit zero.”
Lovejoy opened the scoring as Cooper Ryan capped off its opening drive by making a 43-yard field goal to make it 3-0
The Eagles answered exactly a minute later on a 10-yard touchdown run by Maguire Gasperson
Gasperson finished with 10 carries for 39 yards and one touchdown along with going 4 of 6 passing for 141 yards and two scores
One more first-quarter score came on a 3-yard pass from Jacob Janecek to Daylan McCutcheon that made it 10-7 Lovejoy late in the period
Bland’s forced fumble recovered by Bruce came on the first play of the second quarter
setting up a 10-yard TD pass from Gasperson to Jaxon Greene
who finished with nine carries for 63 yards and one TD
added a 1-yard scoring run less than a minute later to give the Eagles a 21-10 edge
Argyle extended that lead with Peschel’s pick six to make it 28-10
The Eagles went up 35-10 just 41 seconds into the third quarter on a 73-yard TD pass from Gasperson to Caldwell
Caldwell finished with 113 yards and the one score on two catches
the other of which was an acrobatic play as he fell to the ground and hauled the ball in while lying on his back
who already holds scholarship offers from several power conference schools
has now posted at least 71 receiving yards and one TD grab in each of Argyle’s four playoff games
“It means a lot,” Caldwell said of his contributions
Bracy intercepted passes to end back-to-back Lovejoy possessions in the third period
the second of which set up another Argyle scoring drive to go up 42-10 with 3:08 left in the third on a 5-yard run by Watson Bell
Bell finished with 17 carries for a team-high 73 yards and the one score
Lovejoy set the final margin with 10:12 left in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard pass from Cade Lynch to Coleman Reaugh
Argyle sets sights on flipping the script in its semifinal rematch with South Oak Cliff
“It’s real nice,” Bracy said of the chance at a rematch

Composer and pianist Allison Lovejoy discusses the score of ‘Elijah’s Call’ with Urs Leonhardt Steiner
music director and conductor of the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus
(Kate Stilley Steiner)A few years ago
the pianist and composer Allison Lovejoy was looking into her family history when a name of a distant relative caught her attention
was a newspaper editor and devout abolitionist
Lovejoy received what he referred to as a calling from God to fight for an end to slavery
Lovejoy was warned to stop printing and distributing his anti-slavery materials
and his printing presses were destroyed multiple times
and continued his work until a pro-slavery mob murdered him in 1837
Allison Lovejoy shared her findings with longtime friend and former San Francisco Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman
and asked if she knew about Elijah’s legacy
I was just reading about him the other night,” Lovejoy tells me today
“I was thinking of writing an opera.”
Lovejoy is in rehearsals with the with the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus to premiere her oratorio dedicated to Lovejoy
3 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco
It’s the culmination of years of work
Elijah Lovejoy’s mother taught her children to read the Bible
waiting for God to show him his life’s calling
he set out on an incredible journey on foot
walking from his hometown in Maine to what was then the edge of the country: St
that would become the starting point for Lovejoy’s work
Lovejoy brought in San Francisco writer and historian Gary Kamiya
the two dove head-first into Elijah Lovejoy’s life and career
Kamiya helped select the most significant events of Lovejoy’s life to include; he also wrote lyrics
using Elijah Lovejoy’s words as a guide
“We interpolated quite a few of Elijah Lovejoy’s own writings
as well as statements made by his enemies — political defenders of slavery,” Kamiya tells me
as well as family histories written by other relatives
“[There was] a book written by his brothers
Lovejoy that has a lot of lengthy quotations
including poems that he wrote,” Kamiya says
researched the language of the time to better understand Elijah Lovejoy’s rhetoric
and its influences from the era’s church preachers
“I didn’t want to write in that style,” she says
“but I wanted to understand that sound.”
would best tell Elijah Lovejoy’s story
“Oratorios sound scary because it sounds very biblical
like Handel’s Messiah,” she says
I can’t call it ‘Elijah.’”
She kept thinking about Lovejoy on his long trek to St
and about the moment he’d found that calling in abolition work
The oratorio’s title came to her: Elijah’s Call
“The whole thing about ‘the call’ is someone walking
walking with this constant motor with this ostinato rhythm underneath
but then you also have the voices of the chorus like a Greek choir
Where are you going?’ And they give him the courage to move forward.”
Courage was certainly a necessity for an abolitionist in the slave state of Missouri
Elijah Lovejoy published editorials that began as anti-slavery pieces
eventually calling for universal emancipation
Lovejoy’s enemies grew larger in rank
Eventually Lovejoy left Missouri for the free state of Illinois and his family’s safety
Settling across the Mississippi River in the town of Alton
Lovejoy ordered a new printing press to begin his work again
a violent mob formed and stormed the warehouse where the printing press was stored
Reviewing the tragic events of Lovejoy’s life and death
Allison Lovejoy thought long and hard on how to best evoke emotion through the oratorio
Lovejoy’s choices of tempo and key are one piece of it
it’s dynamic layering and buildup,” she says
Lovejoy opted to tap a variety of influences for Elijah’s Call
Lovejoy’s initial dive into her family history began around 2020
Lovejoy saw parallels between Elijah Lovejoy and Floyd — how their murders are part of a larger
intersectional fight for justice and safekeeping of Black lives and those who advocate for them
In choosing the narrator of Elijah’s Call
Lovejoy found a perfect fit in Oakland-based civil rights activist and lawyer Walter Riley
The father of musician and filmmaker Boots Riley and a longtime friend of Lovejoy
Riley was immediately drawn to Elijah Lovejoy’s story
“The idea of fighting slavery … and the history of those folks who were building a movement resonates with me,” he says
“It’s the kind of work I do now: civil rights activism
When I ask Lovejoy what it’s like working with Riley
“It’s wonderful,” she says
“I’ve always admired his insights
His wisdom brings something to the piece that elevates it.”
Elijah Lovejoy may not be widely known today
but Lovejoy hopes the oratorio will help change that
Elijah Lovejoy’s story is directly connected to modern social movements
The phrase “I lit a lamp,” for example
which appears more than once in the oratorio
“I didn’t know that that [phrase] was a symbolic line — the lighting of the lamp of the Underground Railroad,” Lovejoy says
“I use that throughout the oratorio to say
the connection between Elijah Lovejoy and today’s fight for racial justice was instantaneous
“It’s the exact kind of story we see today,” he tells me
“It’s part of the struggle we face
And every time we see an example from history from… the folks who came before us
it’s useful to pay attention to that
and then maybe we become a more…enlightened society.” He points a finger as he speaks
“That’s what Elijah learned in this story
He learned about and accepted the humanity of these Black folks…but they attacked him and killed him for it.”
Before Lovejoy has to head back into dress rehearsal for the oratorio
I ask what she hopes audiences will take away from Elijah’s Call
and inspiration to stand together.”
‘Elijah’s Call’ premieres Sunday
at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco
