Ward I Councilwoman Jacqueline Timmer discusses a potential partnership with the YMCA on the Miller Park Pool
Lynchburg Ward I Councilwoman Jacqueline Timmer has proposed a partnership with a private entity that could lead to the privatization of the Miller Park Pool
Timmer toured the Miller Park Pool complex Friday afternoon with officials from the YMCA of Central Virginia and Lynchburg City Manager Wynter Benda to discuss a potential partnership with the YMCA
The news media was not allowed to join officials on the tour of the pool facility
Timmer said the YMCA would take ownership of the pool as long as it would continue to allow public access
She said she began exploring a possible partnership in late March
“It’s important that we explore all options on the table,” Timmer said in a statement Friday
Since the city released its five-year capital improvement program earlier this year
some Republicans on city council have expressed opposition to plans to spend millions on upgrades to the pool and the main branch of the Lynchburg Public Library
Lynchburg proposed spending $10.4 million on improvements to the pool complex and $12.5 million on renovations to the library
which has seen few upgrades since it opened in 1984
“Rather than spend more than $10 million by ripping out the existing pool and starting over
Faraldi’s idea to pursue private ownership as long as any agreement with the YMCA requires continuing public access to the pool,” Timmer said in reference to Ward IV Councilman and fellow Republican Chris Faraldi
Daily fees to the Miller Park Pool are $3 per person
It’s unclear whether the YMCA would require memberships to Miller Park Pool
vice president of the YMCA of Central Virginia
said he does not know what will come from the discussions with Timmer
“But we believe it’s worth exploring how we might partner with the city of Lynchburg to better serve our community together,” he said in a statement
“There’s been a lot of conversations about how things are going to work out in the capital improvement project during this budget cycle
and one of those focuses has been Miller Park Pool.”
Timmer said the pool is “an amazing asset to the community
and the Y and I are exploring private options” to keep the pool open to the residents of Lynchburg
But Timmer also said she is in support of lowering the current tax rate to the equalized rate of 76.7 cents per $100 of assessed value for fiscal year 2026
which could lead to funding for pool upgrades getting cut from the budget
Benda proposed keeping the tax rate at 89 cents
The equalized rate is the rate at which taxes would need to be set to ensure that on a collective basis — when taking into account residential
commercial and industrial properties — the amount of real estate taxes collected by Lynchburg does not go up from the previous year
told The News & Advance that he appreciates when local organizations partner with the city on projects because it makes the city stronger
But Wilder wondered if the YMCA is going to give $10 million to “redo a pool that has passed its useful life.”
“The YMCA is in the process of a Fund Development Campaign to renovate its downtown facility,” Wilder said
“It must be going really well to take on another $10 million project.”
Vaughan said he and his colleagues at the YMCA have been watching the budget debate on city council and that the YMCA’s “goal is not to raise taxes or to put any extra burden on the citizens.”
“We want to make sure the pool stays and that the community has access to it,” he said
As far as who will own the pool under Timmer’s plan
Vaughan said that’s not part of the discussion right now
Vaughan said he decided to tour the pool to see what it would take for the YMCA to upgrade it and ensure it remains safe to use
Timmer said the next step after Friday’s tour of the pool will be a discussion with the YMCA about the terms of a potential partnership
Benda declined to comment on Timmer’s proposal for the Miller Park Pool
Other city staff who took part in the tour were Assistant City Manager Kent White and Parks and Recreation Director Wyatt Woody

Game Recap: Softball | 5/4/2025 11:35:00 PM
-- The University of Lynchburg softball team opened postseason play with a split on the first day of ODAC pod play
1 Virginia Wesleyan in a tight 2-1 contest
Lynchburg faced a Shenandoah squad that had previously swept them in two close games earlier this season
Shenandoah struck first with a solo home run in the top of the first
After racking up six hits in the opening frame, Lynchburg kept rolling in the second. Sarah Watts added another run with a double—Lynchburg's third of the game—before Barnes recorded her third RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1
Shenandoah's offense came alive in the third
scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 7-4
Lynchburg answered right back in the bottom half
setting up Talayumptewa's clutch 2-RBI single down the right side
A throwing error on the play brought in a third run
Pitcher Kailey Dorcsis and the Lynchburg defense held off Shenandoah the rest of the way
but Shenandoah couldn't string together the hits needed to mount a comeback
Lynchburg earned an emphatic 11-5 win and advanced to face top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan later that evening
Virginia Wesleyan entered the contest after a dominant 9-1
Both teams appeared poised for another high-scoring game
and Lynchburg jumped ahead in the first inning
After a Watts single moved Hudnall into scoring position
Talayumptewa drove her in with a fielder's choice
that opening-inning hit was one of just three for the Hornets in the game
Dorcsis held the Marlins scoreless through two innings
but Virginia Wesleyan tied the game in the third
a fielder's choice followed by back-to-back strikeouts resulted in a 1-1 score
Virginia Wesleyan broke the tie in the fifth
stringing together consecutive hits to take a 2-1 lead
The Hornets made one final push in the seventh. Hodge led off with a single, and pinch runner Zoe Elliot advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Alex Love followed with a single to left
putting runners at the corners with one out
Powell then hit a dribbler back to the circle
which pitcher Hanna Bible fielded cleanly and flipped home to tag out Elliot for the second out
Hudnall slapped a ball between second and short
but a runner's interference call ended Lynchburg's rally and the game
With Averett upsetting Shenandoah later in the day
the Hornets will now face the Cougars tomorrow for a chance to earn a rematch with Virginia Wesleyan
with a potential second game scheduled for 4 p.m

(WSET) — Major changes are on the horizon for the Candlers Mountain interchange and the Lynchburg Expressway
as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) embarks on a $64 million project to enhance traffic flow and safety in this heavily trafficked area
The project will impact drivers accessing the northbound Lynchburg Expressway from Candlers Mountain and those entering Candlers Mountain from the southbound expressway
Current entry and exit loops will be eliminated
and new acceleration and deceleration lanes will be added to each ramp
The Candlers Mountain Bridge will also be replaced
expressed concerns about the existing setup
as they're flying down to try to merge on 501 and I'm trying to get off
are they going to let me in?" she said
SEE ALSO: Man hospitalized after shooting near Sunshine Express Market in Lynchburg
Len Stevens from VDOT said the changes aim to simplify driving. "It's making driving easier for the drivers, fewer decisions to make behind the wheel, and then also getting the vehicles through much more efficiently."
Local drivers are supportive of the improvements. Jen Rowland, another Lynchburg resident, described the current situation as challenging.
"It was a bit of a challenge for us to figure out how to navigate that, it is like 'Oh my gosh there's a car, we've gotta go!'" she said.
The project is set to begin in the spring of 2026 and will end in the spring of 2029.
But that's not all. From May 18 to July 1, crews will repair the surface of the eastbound side of the bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, primarily during overnight hours, to extend the bridge's lifespan by 25 years. Phase 2 of that project will involve daytime lane closures.

Future of Lynchburg's Miller Park Pool up in the airby Brittany Slaughter
Va (WSET)-- — The future of Miller Park Pool in Lynchburg is up in the air
and City Councilwoman Jacqueline Timmer has some ideas on how to fund improvements
Timmer said city staff members have recommended leveling Miller Park Pool and rebuilding
The price tag for that is over $10 million
Timmer said you would have to foot the bill if they keep the real estate tax where it is after higher assessment values
Timmer is proposing partnerships with organizations like the YMCA
"We really want to continue to have that as an amazing asset to our community
the Y and I are exploring private options as far as how to make that possible and continue that legacy moving forward," Timmer said
said this is just a preliminary conversation to see what could be possible
"The Y is here to serve the community
and that's why we're considering an opportunity to come together and talk to see if there is a mutually beneficial move forward for the community," Vaughan said
One parent said he doesn't care who owns the pool
but hopes the price of admission remains top of mind
"The pool stays pretty affordable with the city owning it
so as long as the company comes in and they're willing to still meet the community where they're at and provide a good service
no problem with a private company owning it," said Parent Adam Barela
as the rest of the council will have to get involved in a decision
but Timmer and Vaughan both emphasized that no matter what path is taken

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The Salvation Army has been serving the Lynchburg community for nearly 120 years
Major Caleb Prieto said their donations are down 25 percent in the first quarter and some of their vital programs are at risk
The Salvation Army offers an array of services
from outreach to people experiencing homelessness to a daily community feeding program
we feed about 80 to 90 people every day of the year
We really are not looking to cancel any of that
but it's really tough to do it without the support of the community," Prieto said
Any drop in donations will have effects on that program
We also have families with basic needs like rent assistance
that probably would be affected too if we are not able to pick up a little bit on donations."
Prieto said their kettle fundraiser this winter didn't perform as well as they'd expected
which may be contributing to their funding shortfall
he said a lot of people are struggling right now
The Salvation Army said their work is vital
and a lot of people need the extra support right now
"The Salvation Army has always been the front part of providing service to the community
This community has been extremely generous with us for years," he said
"I think this is the first time that we have a waiting list for family services
we have been able to make appointments and provide the services
That tells that the situation is not good and people are struggling
that creates an instability in the community
and they come to the Salvation Army for help."
If you're interested in donating, they're accepting monetary donations
as well as non-perishable food items for their food pantry and toiletries for their residential programs

The Hillcats rebounded in the bottom of the first as Tommy Hawke would get aboard on a leadoff single
After a stolen base and advancing to third on a ground out
