The Lynnwood City Council may soon allow marijuana retail shops within city limits
BY MYNORTHWEST STAFF
The Lynnwood City Council has taken a significant step toward permitting retail marijuana sales within city limits
the council approved a motion expressing its intent to allow such sales on April 28
The potential revenues from the marijuana tax was a key impetus for consideration
after the city enacted a ban on the retail shops in 2015
Councilmembers Patrick Decker and David Parshall opposed the measure
Lynnwood has four state-issued cannabis retail licenses allocated by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board
due to the city’s longstanding ban on retail marijuana shops
The council’s decision follows recommendations from the Lynnwood Planning Commission
which conducted an extensive analysis of potential zoning and regulatory frameworks for retail cannabis
The proposed ordinance would permit retail cannabis establishments in designated zones, including Highway 99 Mixed Use, General Commercial, and Alderwood, subject to specific buffer requirements and zoning standards, according to the Lynnwood Times
which first reported details of the council meeting

Attempted child abduction reported on public trail near golf course in Lynnwoodby Karina Vargas and KOMO News Staff
— The Lynnwood Police Department is investigating an attempted abduction that occurred Monday afternoon
The LPD said officers responded to a report of an attempted abduction around 4:30 p.m
Monday on the 7300 block of 202nd Street SW
Officers determined three boys were riding their bikes on a public trail behind a golf course when an unknown man approached them
described as a Hispanic man between 45 and 50 years old
allegedly grabbed one of the juveniles by the wrist
for elderly for everybody who wants to take a walk," a resident who wanted to remain anonymous told KOMO News
The boy managed to pull away and rode off toward a nearby residence
The suspect did not speak or make any comments to the kids and was last seen walking in the same direction as the boys at the intersection of 73rd Avenue W and 202nd Street SW
so we came out on the left side and we saw two gentlemen yelling at each other
One told the other person ‘stay away from children’," said a resident who lives nearby
and there were no indications that the suspect attempted to pull the child off the bike
Parents and residents said they are worried about the safety of kids in the area
“It’s disturbing because we walk here all the time and people are pretty nice around here and we consider this a safe area," said Ben Paul
The LPD said officers have communicated with the local school district to raise awareness and have increased patrols in the area
Detectives have been assigned to further investigate the case

Watt says police have told him thieves are mainly looking for personal information
perhaps ruin your credit for whatever they can gain
They’re not just going down my street – drive around the block and see the mailboxes open on the next street also,” said Watt
Postal Inspector John Wiegand says mail theft is a growing problem and a top priority for the agency
“If there’s anything I can ever say about mail theft
It’s a dramatically underreported crime,” said Wiegand
Watt says he’s encouraging other neighbors to put cameras out
“This is very easy to do and it almost always gets a face and that’s enough for the police to work with,” said Watt
Watt says he knows of at least one thief who was caught with the help of his video

The Lynnwood City Council is reconsidering who should fill a vacant seat after new information came to light about the person appointed to the position Monday - including alleged controversial online comments and sexually explicit material posted online
Roberts ultimately beat out more than a dozen other candidates who initially applied for the position
City Council President Nick Coelho told KOMO News the process included applicants submitting their resumes and completing a civic questionnaire
with the top eight candidates invited to an interview with the council
KOMO News has learned new information has come to light about Roberts’ political views
and sexually explicit material posted online
were aware of the statements made by Jessica Roberts while we were deliberating on selection of an individual to fill the vacancy,” Council Member Patrick Decker told KOMO News in a statement
“I certainly had no idea of the views Jessica held and do not feel those views and activities are in keeping with the gravity and seriousness of serving the people of Lynnwood on the City Council.”
The details of Roberts' alleged explicit online material and comments were not elaborated on by the council in the statement
the council plans to discuss rescinding the appointment of Roberts to position 5
as well as decide on next steps to fill that position
which could include bringing in new candidates or considering the remaining top candidates from the initial pool
KOMO News also reached out to Jessica Roberts about the recent issues that have come up with her city council appointment
This is not the first time a Lynnwood city council member has come under fire in recent years
As the city council decides on next steps to move forward
they are also considering whether to change the vetting process to appoint potential candidates to serve on city council to now include looking at social media accounts
"I think that might alert us to any alarming opinions or behavior that might become either disqualifying or at least be considered during this process as we try to make the best choice possible to fill this position for the residents," Coelho said
"It's important to move forward as a team in a unified way," Coelho added
"Whatever decision we come down on we're going to move forward together."
The special meeting is scheduled for Thursday
