It's the start of a new day in Snohomish and inside a historic building, built back in 1937, it's one that begins with the hum of conversation and clatter of silverware, the smell of fresh-brewed coffee and the sizzle of the griddle. Yes, this is a typical morning at Maltby Cafe
They're always friendly," one customer told me
"It's a place where friends can come together and share
That's why I come here," added another
It's not hyperbole to say the Maltby Cafe is a community hub
It's one of those places everyone seems to know about
a restaurant where the smiles customers receive are almost as big as the portions on the plate
country-style restaurant with everything homemade
chopped fresh for the plate," said Tana Baumler
"It's a place that brings people in
serves them the most top quality food and a restaurant that wants to serve and love on people," added Keesha Laws
Baumler's daughter and a manager at Maltby Cafe
the Maltby Cafe started as a support building for a schoolhouse
one that went through numerous owners before Baumler and three friends bought the place back in 1988
we had a lot of friends in the restaurant industry saying
I walked in and I loved it," recalled Baumler
Baumler's partners have retired and the Maltby Cafe has become a true blue family business
with her daughters now helping to run the show
"I think my mom has instilled so many life values in me
A lot of that is serving others," said Laws
"Continuing that legacy on is just something I couldn't imagine myself being anywhere else."
She napped on benches and walked the floor when she was just a toddler
The same can be said for many of Maltby Cafe's customers
"We don't have to advertise because we have all these people
we've known them since they were lumps in their mom's bellies
they're bringing their babies back and those babies are getting to be in high school," said Baumler with a laugh
It's the quality of people we get in here
you have to have good help and you have to have good food."
Maltby Cafe takes it as seriously as the hospitality
with an array of breakfast and lunch options built on a foundation of quality ingredients and old school
Some items are inspired by Baumler's childhood growing up in Montana
We fill them with strawberries and marionberries with creme fraiche on top
We have our bacon out of Montana because I grew up on Daly's Bacon in Montana
It wouldn't be on the menu if I didn't like it," said Baumler
if there's one thing Maltby Cafe is known for
there's a lot of love put into it," explained Laws
The cinnamon rolls have been a staple here since before Baumler and her friends took over
The recipe came with the restaurant and they're still making them the same way decades later
the bakers at Maltby Cafe will turn out as many as 200 fresh baked cinnamon rolls
Out of the oven the rolls almost as big as the plate they're served on and finished with a generous amount of icing
It's enough to share with the table or take home to eat for breakfast the next day
While its become something of a cliche to say 'made with love'
at the Maltby Cafe it's not just true
it's the foundation the restaurant is built on
love of family and love for their customers
"We want (our customer) to feel that they walk in here and it has changed their day," said Baumler
good service and just go out feeling warm and loved."

The post-dinner rant is all of a piece with our fetish for feedback
due to offensive activities in the bedroom
My sin is that two months after purchasing this admirably functional
I have yet to leave a review on the company website
of course – I have been haunted by an increasingly plaintive sequence of requests
these pleas moved firmly into the territory of emotional blackmail
my bed linen providers rely on positive reviews to keep a roof over their heads
I’m aware that the duvet cover itself isn’t sentient but
with this level of pressure leveraged in its name
it’s hard to catch sight of it in the laundry and not attribute to it a smidge of cotton-fibred resentment
Incessant demands for consumer feedback are the newest plague on our inboxes. It’s not just the duvet cover: Tripadvisor is still badgering me to review a restaurant I didn’t actually attend
after looking it up last month; my new exercise mat came with a questionnaire; and when I bought a splurge item through a luxury fashion marketplace
I was invited separately to review the web portal
It’s enough to drive one back to shopping in person
with cash – anything that doesn’t require an email address
So I was initially enthused to hear about Dorian
the Notting Hill restaurant that is tearing up the rulebook on customer feedback
Gone is the review-driven service and the abject apologies issued online to any grumpy sot who issues calumnies from behind a pseudonym
Any complaints left on Google or Tripadvisor will be roundly ignored; any customer who even mutters about leaving a review will be ejected on the spot
They certainly won’t be emailing you to ask if there’s room for improvement
and get ready for your manners to be marked out of five
As the old joke used to go: “In Soviet Russia
although you’ll get a sense of where you rate
based on whether you’re blocked from repeat bookings
or added to an elite WhatsApp group with access to last-minute reservations
Dorian’s owner Chris D’Sylva told the Mail last week that he keeps a logbook of diners’ behaviour
“It’s a tiered system whereby we rank how much we like the customer and the value of the customer
or the destructiveness of the customer.” Behaviours likely to get you marked as “destructive”
Turn up with a ring-light and demand help filming your dinner for Instagram
(D’Sylva has a healthy scorn for Insta influencers
largely due to the number of freebies they request.) The worst crime
is to show any hint of offering your own feedback
The only critique that matters here is the one issued to the customer
we find ourselves in a world in which we’re all reviewing each other
all the timeThe Dorian approach may seem aggressive to many
and no doubt has been publicised as a calculated strategy to cultivate a reputation for exclusiveness
The Mail’s initial interview with D’Sylva included a blingy list of celebrities
or “people of influence” to use his preferred phrase
there’s surely something laudable about any business owner who refuses to be held hostage by any curmudgeon with a laptop and a Google account
You have nothing to lose but your Tripadvisor stars
has joined a list of chefs backing Dorian’s approach
although he doesn’t ignore bad reviews by tricky customers: “I respond to every unfair
It’s not only negative reviews that can be faked
revealed that 10% of surveyed Amazon customers had been offered bribes by retailers to leave a five-star review
often comprising a gift card of greater value than the original amount spent
we find ourselves in a culture of uber-reviewing: a world in which we’re all reviewing each other
The most obvious form of low-level irritation this provokes is that of the hassled customer: the part of me that resents when a retailer expects me to make payment by giving up my time
it builds a world in which we’re encouraged to complain after an encounter rather than adopt strategies to build trust with those who serve us
There is something avoidant about the post-dinner review
it seems to be an outlet for any minor dissatisfaction that a diner has never quite dared voice to a waiter
The same moral cheapness surely creeps in when customers themselves are reviewed
The old adage tells us to trust a new date by how he treats the waiter
but what if he’s only mustering basic courtesy because he wants to stay on the restaurant’s list
(He’ll need that gold rating if he’s planning to bring a different date there next week.) Meanwhile
the services that already feature reviews of consumers have a nasty tendency to reward “normal” social behaviour
One friend received a bad Airbnb review because he didn’t choose to watch the football with his host

Among a highly-celebrated Rachel Daly goal and the return of Rachel Corsie
there was a significant milestone for another Rachel Villan
During the last Aston Villa Women win, there was more than an impressive 5-2 victory over Arsenal
Rachel Maltby made her WSL and Villa senior team debut on Wednesday during the thrilling win
Subbing on for Mayumi Pacheco during the 69th minute
the defender played at left wing-back for the remainder of the fixture
The combined efforts of everyone on the pitch proved to be enough to see off the Gunners and secure the three points
For someone to be able to make their first appearance against such a strong side shows a lot of trust from the manager
Natalia Arroyo sensed the visitors on the day beginning to gain something of a foothold in the match and made the adjustments that she felt were needed to prevent a comeback
For Malby, it was more than a chance to show that she can hold her own. The WSL opportunity will be the first of what she'll hope will be many and a steady run on the pitch in England's top level. While speaking after an earlier U-17 World Cup semifinal match for England, the defender spoke on what it means to play against the best competition. She shared, as can be seen on the Tata Sports YouTube channel:
Although it ended up being Chelsea officially solidifying their spot as champions for the season, certainly Arsenal were among the best this year during the 2024-2025 campaign
that Maltby used in her approach for the younger Lionesses side showcased itself this week against the Gunners
Particularly under a new manager, there are opportunities for the current AVWFC players to make an impression and garner further consideration for playing time
Knowing the focus and ability that Malby displayed against Arsenal and her continued drive
the English defender will make a strong ongoing case for herself to see the field on a regular basis for Villa

“Closer Than Ever: The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby Jr
and David Shire” catalogs the 60-year partnership between Broadway icons and Yale alums Richard Maltby Jr
“‘Closer Than Ever’ sort of has a double meaning because it’s the title of one of their revues and it also refers to them because they’ve been writing songs together for more than 60 years and they are truly closer than ever,” Rosenblum said
“It’s really wonderful to see them work together and hear about their work from them
he interviewed both Shire and Maltby several times
The two met in their first year at Yale in 1955
Maltby was a lover of musicals seeking to become a set designer
and Shire always wanted to write and compose musicals.
but there was nobody else to write songs,” Rosenblum said
“[David] actually came to Yale with an entire musical score
they had to start writing songs together.”
They put one another through a “training period,” said Rosenblum
Maltby learned the basics of musical composition and Shire that dramatism
is essential to writing songs for the stage.
they wrote their first jointly composed musical
This show would be staged at the end of their junior year as the commencement show
the duo uncovered a rhythm of collaboration that has sustained their partnership and careers
David still says Richard is kind of the arbiter.”
Rosenblum attributes this synergy to Shire and Maltby’s individual selflessness and humility
Shire and Maltby’s more than 60 years of collaboration are akin to a marriage
“lies in that neither of them is attached to being right
but they are both attached to getting the best results.”
He said that the pair is so close that they nearly finish each other’s sentences
Watching them is comparable to observing a “polished vaudeville act.”
Rosenblum said that he learned a variety of interesting facts that few others know
wrote the Motown classic “With You I’m Born Again” in 1979
curating cryptic crossword puzzles for the magazine’s monthly issues
Shire told him that he would have written “six or seven more musicals” if Maltby wasn’t writing “those damn crossword puzzles.”
Rosenblum believes Maltby and Shire’s influence is significant on modern composers and writers
He hopes that readers in the Yale community familiarize themselves with their works to preserve history
as he finds them to be “cultural forebears and artistic godfathers.”’
Irene Nam ’28 has read from the book and said that its importance lies in its ability to show how ideas in the creative world are formed and brought to life
“[“Closer Than Ever”] really shows how relationships and working as a team
are so important and essential to making good work,” Nam said
“I think it also conveys the beauty of partnership and collaboration.”
Copies of Rosenblum’s book are available at the Yale Bookstore
where they are showcased in the books by Yale authors section
Oxford’s Broadway Legacies publisher of “Closer Than Ever,” says that he is excited it is finally out.
“I am delighted to report that the book was an incredible hit,” Block said
thorough and insightful book on a team that has often been overlooked
Rosenblum’s original six-page introduction for the book was axed
Rosenblum released his unpublished foreword with the News.
he describes his piano-playing stint at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Connecticut
where he worked on the music for the first production of the summer: “Starting Here
Starting Now.” The revue of songs happened to be written by Maltby and Shire.
he realized that “there was something quite special about their songs.”
Maltby and Shire right away became role models for me,” wrote Rosenblum
“I had been writing music since around the time I was eleven and had recently become interested in composing for musical theater
which meant I was experimenting with writing my own lyrics as well
These two gentlemen really had it going on in a way that I thought was well worth aspiring to.”
Maltby and Shire played recurring and significant roles in his life
Rosenblum hoped to take on the task of chronicling
deconstructing and celebrating the work of “two of the smartest
and most diversely talented people [he knows].”
Rosenblum is writing another book about Maury Yeston ’67 GRD ’73 ’74
composer of the Tony award-winning musical “Nine,” and his former undergraduate teacher.

LONDON (AP) — An 84-year-old British man armed only with a pair of trousers beat back a mugger half his age who tried to rob him at a laundry in northern England
Ron Croker was drying his clothes last week when the masked thug accosted him at the unstaffed Coin-Op Launderette in Maltby in South Yorkshire
In the altercation caught on a surveillance camera
it appeared the two were struggling over the pair of jeans Croker was folding when the man attacked him
But the would-be robber wanted his wallet and Croker wasn’t giving it up without a fight

Have you bumped into the Prop Man of Orcas Island at Moran State Park
BY FELIKS BANEL
Halloween is tomorrow and we’ve been collecting your Washington spooky stories and tales
but about public places around Puget Sound where myths and legends have emerged over the decades about creepy goings-on and other miscellaneous things that go bump in the Puget Sound night
Last week, we put out the call to hear from listeners about neighborhood myths and community legends in the KIRO Newsradio listening area
We said we were interested in stories that pre-date the internet
but that somehow were shared and spread through word of mouth or what cultural anthropologists might call “oral tradition.”
And the KIRO Newsradio listeners came through
The story that started it all came from Ryan Kingsbury
which then inspired this story collection effort
Kingsbury grew up in the Canyon Park area of Bothell
he took a school trip to Fort Casey State Park on Whidbey Island
the teachers told Kingsbury and the other kids many stories
It’s stayed with Kingsbury for more than three decades
there’s a hole in the ground where they’ve patched it with cement,” Kingsbury told KIRO Newsradio
“And the story was that a man got stuck in there when they were pouring the concrete
and (they) didn’t discover it till later.”
“He (had) put his hand up for help,” Kingsbury continued
but the concrete cured and hardened before the man was found
and then they just filled it in the hole there with extra concrete.”
went to go look at the hole that had been filled in already,” Kingsbury said
and there was no evidence of a body encased in the concrete
I’ve always thought there’s a dead guy under there.”
Listeners were inspired by Kingsbury’s tale and by other spooky stories about Fire Trail Road that were shared last week
and more examples began arriving via email
KIRO Newsradio reached out to the authors of some of the creepiest tales
‘Unsolved Histories:’ Feliks Banel’s new podcast examines airliner that crashed after departing Tacoma
has it that a man is encased in concrete in the floor of the SWITCHBOARD building at what’s now Fort Casey Historic State Park on Whidbey Island
Nate Ratto is a carpenter who lives in Kirkland
Nate was a sixth-grader at Robert Frost Elementary
For the year-end “Outdoor Ed” trip
all the sixth graders at Robert Frost went to Camp Moran at Moran State Park on Orcas Island for a two-night trip
“And the one that stuck out to me was the one about local pilot that crashed in the fog,” Ratto explained
he ended up with the propeller stuck in his head
and so he roamed the island in the fog with this propeller sticking out of his head.”
Nate feels like this particular story was told mostly for his benefit; it was intended as a cautionary tale to scare him enough so that he would behave himself
“And so we were scared to leave our cabins at night,” Ratto continued
We didn’t want to encounter the ‘Prop Man,’ as they called him.”
Our final local micro-myth comes from Mike Sears of Sultan
All Over The Map: LiDAR tech reveals ghostly causeway, phantom lake on Eastside
Mike heard one of his friends talking about a spooky place east of Lynnwood just off Highway 522
“They’re sitting there talking about the Maltby Cemetery
What are you talking about?” Sears told KIRO Newsradio
“And they said that there’s these 13 steps
“That was the story,” Sears said
and told his friends he would go that very night to check it out for himself
because he came down with a cold that evening
He says that when he didn’t show up for school that morning
his friends assumed he had gone to Maltby Cemetery and walked the 13 steps and was now dead
when he showed up for school the day after that
And that was the end of Mike’s entanglement with Maltby Cemetery
But the story stayed lodged in the back of his mind
and you’re not allowed to go back there” – it’s private property
Mike says – “it was kind of sketch anyways
but so we pull over to the side of the road
and the friends of mine start walking up into the woods
More from Feliks Banel: The mystery of Washington’s first corn maze
Mike left his friends and went back to the car they’d driven to the Maltby Cemetery
and it wasn’t the Mystery Machine he went back to – it was his friend’s 1986 Toyota Corolla
Mike says it was pretty scary sitting just there by himself waiting for his friends
this is like two o’clock in the morning
and you could hear howling in the distance,” Sears told KIRO Newsradio
“And then I saw something fly from the trees,” Sears continued
did you hear the howling?’ They’re like
I saw something fly from the tree.’ And then
Unlike “The Haunted Hand of Fort Casey” or the “The Prop Man of Orcas Island,” the story of “The 13 Steps of Maltby Cemetery” has actually become “a thing” on the internet – though Mike heard the story before a decade before Reddit was founded
Mike says he’s looked but never found anything resembling 13 steps at Maltby Cemetery
and it’s unclear how far back that story actually goes
or how it first originated in those long-ago pre-Internet days
If any of these stories might be inspiring you to go in search of the supernatural
veteran observer of the paranormal on Fire Trail Road
instead of heading out into the spooky darkness and tempting fate
why not devote your energy to digging into the recesses of your memory and then sharing any or your community or neighborhood haunted stories with KIRO Newsradio
With Halloween still to come – as well as our ongoing efforts to pretend to be cultural anthropologists – we’d love to share your story on the radio, too. Send your best live and local spooky stuff to fbanel@kiroradio.com
Veteran executive to be replaced with gas carrier owner’s chief commercial officer Jakob Bode
BW Epic Kosan, a leading owner of small gas carriers, announced on Wednesday that chief executive Charles Maltby will step down on 1 June, after a decade at the helm.
He will be succeeded by the company’s current chief commercial officer, Jakob Bode.
“Jakob will provide a seamless CEO transition,” chairman Andreas Sohmen-Pao said in a statement.

Luca Kettles in OHL U18 draftNewest selections make most of second opportunity
When it comes to persevering through the ups and downs of a hockey career
Sutton Maltby need not look far for inspiration
Article contentNot only is his uncle former NHLer and four-time Stanley Cup champion Kirk Maltby
but his father is longtime professional Shawn Maltby
who saw success as a player on both sides of the Atlantic
“Hockey’s a big part of my family and it has been for a while,” said Sutton Maltby
but he has played in leagues higher than many people who were drafted and that’s a great example for me
I look at him as a leader and he’s more than just a dad for me.”
Dad and the rest of the family were thrilled when Maltby
a centre for the Waterloo Wolves U18 AAA team
was named as the Sudbury Wolves’ first-round choice

“I was ecstatic,” Maltby told The Sudbury Star
we were sitting on the couch just watching it
thinking maybe second or third round I’d see my name
then it popped up and it was just a great feeling.”
Passed over in his first year of OHL draft eligibility in 2024
Maltby put himself in the mix for a U18 selection with a strong 10-goal
10-assist performance in 34 games in the Alliance U18 league
160-pounder also played seven games as an affiliate for the Elmira Sugar Kings of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League
“I took a big step from last year in U16,” he said
“I definitely got my confidence up this year
I really needed to work on my puck around the net and burying the close ones
just helping out the team with the scoring and stuff
and I put the work in other the summer and I think it helped me out and led to a better year
because I knew I could have been there last year
stayed to the grind and made good things happen
I had teammates and buddies who did get drafted last year and we all ended up playing in the same league and for the same teams
Having followed Maltby’s progress since last season
Wolves general manager Rob Papineau continued to be impressed with the youngster’s competitiveness
“He’s not one of those guys you have to look for from shift to shift,” Papineau said
“He’s a guy who caught our attention in the past and he was one of those guys who snuck through
but he went and played in Waterloo for a very good coach and we have seen the results with someone like Rowan Henderson
“His compete level is just so high and our coaches are going to love him
which we thought would be good to add to the hockey team
Waterloo’s U18 program has proven a reliable source of talent for the Wolves in recent seasons
Not only did Henderson become a first-round selection in 2024
en route to securing a full-time spot in Sudbury
but forward Joey Brehmer was a second-round choice in 2023 and made his debut with the local OHL club this season
“They go for locker room guys,” Maltby suggested
you have to have the skill and the compete
but we just had a great group of guys in the room and great coaches
making it fun to come to the rink — and that’s important
wanting to get better and to be with everybody
Ottawa Junior 67’s winger Luca Kettles clearly made an impression on the Sudbury staff
who selected the speedy 17-year-old in the second round
because I was out for more than half of the season
he had six goals and 10 assists in only 16 games in the Hockey Eastern Ontario U18 loop this year
“I really think I stepped up from previous seasons,” he said
“I took more of a leadership role on this team and I was with good people
good linemates and it was a good environment to be in
I also put a lot of effort into my off-season training and gained a lot of weight
but I’m glad I put in the work and it finally paid off.”
calling him “one of the fastest skaters we have seen in recent years
in any age group,” and making complimentary comparisons to fleet-footed Wolves alumni Owen Robinson and Nick DeGrazia
but this guy can get to full speed in about a step,” Sudbury’s GM suggested

‘Closer Than Ever: The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby Jr
and David Shire’By Joshua RosenblumOxford University Press
The American Popular Song Society Presents a Gala Celebration of Richard Maltby Jr. and David ShireStreaming Here
For more than 65 years, Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire have written songs and shows together and given us an extraordinary body of work.
I’ve had reason to contemplate their careers, both as a team and individually — Mr. Maltby is a librettist and director and Mr. Shire is a composer — thanks to an all-star tribute concert that can be viewed on YouTube and an excellent new biography of the two creators by Joshua Rosenblum that studies their output.
It’s no insult to Messrs. Maltby and Shire to say that their general reputation needs a book like this, though not to make a case for the overall excellence of their work. As the concert proved over and over, their songs speak for themselves, and to hear even a few of them is to agree that Messrs. Maltby and Shire are two of the finest creators of musical theater of their generation, and ours.
Yet that’s just the beginning of their oeuvre; as Mr. Rosenblum shows, there has hardly been a moment since 1955, when they met as undergraduates at Yale and, reluctantly at first, started working as a team, that they have not been doing remarkable things together. Apart from the two works that actually made it to the Great White Way, they have done dozens of projects that have played off-Broadway, regionally across America, and around the world.
“Starting Here, Starting Now” and “Closer Than Ever” are not that. Perhaps they’re better described as song cycles, except that song cycles aren’t staged and presented theatrically. Messrs. Maltby and Shire have essentially created a musical-theatrical form that is uniquely theirs.
These two works function so well as entire programs that I was surprised to learn that they were cobbled together from earlier book shows that never got off the ground.
The racy “Miss Byrd,” sung sexily by Kaye Tuckerman, was from a 1987 production titled “Urban Blight.” One of the team’s most widely performed numbers, “The Bear, The Tiger, The Hamster and the Mole,” a witty reflection on relationships in the animal kingdom from a female perspective, had been written for “Baby” but was cut from the final script. At the concert, it was delivered winningly by Christiane Noll, reprising it from the 2012 York Theater revival of “Closer.”
As Mr. Maltby’s daughter, singer-actress Charlotte Maltby, put it at the concert, “These songs are little plays. In just three minutes, they are able to create a world that is so fully-realized, voiced from a character as rich and real as anything.”
Mr. Rosenblum’s book ends with a thorough discussion and analysis of three more M&S works that may yet make it to Broadway, “Take Flight,” “Sousatzka,” and “Waterfall,” as well as a new version of “Baby” updated for the 21st century. Still, the project their fans are probably most looking forward to is a new, third song cycle/revue in the tradition of “Starting Here” and “Closer.”
Most theater fans would probably name either “I Don’t Remember Christmas” or “What About Today” as their favorites. Yet it illustrates both the quantity and quality of their work that the concert didn’t didn’t feature the M&S song that I love most, “Back on Base.” On second thought, after hearing Mr. Maltby himself perform “If I Sing” — a song dedicated to his and Mr. Shire’s fathers — I might be changing my mind about what’s their best.

HIs hometown's small soccer team is getting international attention from sponsored merch.Lia Toby/Getty ImagesThis story was produced by our colleagues at the BBC
The biggest sports teams are fashion brands in their own right — with people all around the world wearing merch from the likes of the New York Yankees
But how do you tap into that market when your team isn’t even fully pro
is about as far from the Super Bowl or the World Series as you could imagine.Based in the town of Maltby
in South Yorkshire — about 160 miles north of London — the club play their home games in front of around 100 fans
Soccer clubs move up and down leagues depending on success; Maltby Main currently plays in one of the lowest leagues
their new kit launch has caused an unexpected stir
with demand for their team jerseys coming from around the world
And it’s been a lot for the club’s chairman
“I have to sleep with my phone on silent because whenever we launch anything it’s just you can tell what time people are waking up around the world,” he said
“Because at certain times it’ll go off and it’s like
South America’s just getting up because we’re getting loads of orders coming in.’ So it’s been madness
I can’t wait to go on holiday and see somebody laying around the pool in a Maltby Main shirt.”
So why the sudden interest? It’s because Maltby Main’s matchday kits are now sponsored by Grammy-nominated metal band Bring Me the Horizon
and you’re also getting a bit of music merch
Kieron said the response has given a real boost to the team’s finances
“It’s keeping us going because it does cost quite a lot of money to run a team at this level,” he said
It came about because Bring Me the Horizon’s drummer Matt Nicholls is from the town
“Maltby’s not a place that has much going on,” he said
and then obviously like the coal industry’s gone
So it was more just like getting the community together and giving them something to be a part of
That was the aim from the start,” Nicholls said
but I think the aim more than anything is just to get people through the gate and to actually get involved.”
“If I’m driving through there and I see one of the shirts
after all.) But for a club the size of Maltby Main
Matt Nicholls said he’s already seen the shirts abroad
Malaysia and I’m seeing someone on the front row
he’s got a Maltby Main shirt on,” he added
Music isn’t often thought of as part of the path to sporting greatness
more shirt sales means more cash to spend on players — and that could lead to a climb up the leagues

Mercado Sin Nombre lets coffee beans and corn from Mexico shine through espresso and biscuits
The essence of Austin Mexican cafe Mercado Sin Nombre is reflected in its atole cortado
a masa beverage made with Oaxacan bolita corn and oat milk
It’s the cafe’s core concepts in a drinkable form: coffee and corn
“There’s intricacy in the coffee and the corn itself,” explains owner Julian Maltby
Mercado Sin Nombre is found in East Austin’s Holly neighborhood on 408 North Pleasant Valley Road, where the cafe serves up daytime coffee and food. Although it opened in early July
Mercado was foremost a coffee roasting and masa nixtamalization operation
using products sourced directly from families
Opening a physical restaurant made sense to the family-run company because it’s a way to show off the beauty of what can be accomplished with the ingredients
(Maltby’s uncle Michael Stimets has been its head roaster since the beginning.) Its name — Spanish for “market without a name” — is intentional
It’s not about the business itself; rather
the family wants to highlight and forefront the families and farmers actually growing everything
“I’m hoping we bring a new side of Mexican coffee and corn,” Maltby says
Maltby discovered the magic of Mexican coffee and corn while he was getting his master’s degree in architecture in Mexico City in the late 2010s
He even dedicated his thesis to the processes of producing those ingredients
He sees a huge correlation between coffee and corn with architecture
“Corn is so specific to a place and a time,” he says
and the “people who grow them and coffee are the same way.” The country has so many microclimates where terroirs influence the flavors of everything grown on the fincas
Learning more about these ancient processes was also a way for Maltby to reconnect with his family
He recounts inheriting his grandmother’s metate (a stone vessel used to grind corn)
which dates back 130 years when his great-great-grandmother used it in Mexico before the family came to Texas in the early 1900s
“It became a bodily fulfillment because I was grinding corn with something that somebody had done 100 years ago.” And now he gets to continue that family tradition and legacy
The resulting physical alfresco-for-now space is so vibrant with a counter window
He used his architectural background to build the cafe
from the colorful crate tables and shelves to the indoor wooden bar
“I’m really trying to do right by the neighborhood,” Maltby says
“not change it and keep that vibe.” The cafe’s already got its regulars
which makes him happy: “I feel like I’ve gotten their blessing.” It’s a very casual inviting space with affordable prices; “the intricacy is going to be in what you eat.” he says
“Even though we’re highlighting these places in Mexico
we’re in Austin.” That means sweet and savory masa-based dishes like pancakes; biscuits and gravy; blue masa biscuit sandwiches with chicken sausages
and cheese; conchas; and house-made twinkies filled with orange buttercream
It’s all about making “masa an everyday food again,” he says
Rounding out the Mercado team is culinary director Daniel Gaspar. Before, he had been part of the Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group. He also runs his own catering company, Daffodil
Back in October 2020, Mercado started as a delivery bakery and coffee bean delivery
it participated in various pop-ups around Austin
Then it got into the farmers market stand game
Currently, Mercado roasts its coffees through the roasting co-op Rising Tide Roast Collab in South Austin
It produces year-round beans like the El Ritual and micro-lots (the latter are roasted at the cafe)
Other drinks at the cafe include horchata cold brews and espresso-based coffees
There are also plans to eventually sell beer and wine
Education is another important aspect for Maltby because it allows people to understand and relate to what they’re consuming. “We want to create a fantastic product that you can try,” he says, “but I think the best way to appreciate something is to interact with it with your hands.” There was a coffee processing class run by a farmer family from Mexico and a cupping event
Mercado also hosts pop-up Small’s Pizza on Mondays and Tuesdays starting at 5 p.m.
where owner Kelsey Small serves New Haven-style pies
Having a regular pop-up at the cafe is in line with its ethos: “You don’t know what to expect,” says Maltby
Mercado Sin Nombre’s hours are from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The business still operates its farmers market stand at Texas Farmers Market in Mueller on Sundays
There are plans to host a grand opening block party tentatively on Saturday
