the Diocese of Camden Throughout this somewhat-young Division I career Andrew Phillips has done something many might consider rare in today’s college basketball landscape The Lafayette sophomore waited deep into his senior year of high school for the right scholarship offer He stayed put at the school he had felt was the right fit coming out of high school He made the most of an uptick in minutes to start his second year despite not starting right off the bat.  Andrew Phillips (above) has been on a tear midway through his sophomore season (Photo courtesy Hannah Ally/Lafayette College) And this season — and especially of late — the Malvern Prep product’s patience is paying off Phillips has made the most of a newfound starting role this season catching fire as one of the nation’s most efficient 3-point shooters while developing as a reliable While Phillips’ season averages have been significant increases from his debut season he’s been especially productive of late averaging 14 points and six rebounds in the month of January we were playing a lot of guys,” he said By the latter half of his senior season at Malvern Prep Phillips was still uncommitted and in search of a Division I scholarship it was the Leopards who tracked down Phillips “We knew that he had Division II offers,” Lafayette head coach Mike McGarvey said “He had a lot of recruitment at lower levels from successful programs and I knew he was playing out that spring and also trying to find a Division I scholarship … so “He was not the one pushing the buttons,” McGarvey added Phillips only played a total of 63 minutes in 16 games — in only two games did he see the floor for double digit minutes Phillips only had the opportunity to attempt 30 shots in live game action.  But Phillips went against the “norm.” He hadn’t had much of a chance to play but he took that as an opportunity to grow and develop in his current confines rather than an opportunity to seek a more open door at a different program.  Over the offseason heading into the 2024-25 campaign to have someone who didn't play a whole lot as a first year just stayed consistent in his work ethic and his belief and now it’s all coming together,” McGarvey said “And then with the opportunities in the games early on in the season he started to get his feet on the ground and feel confident in his play.” this season has been the payoff of his dedication — and it’s even taken some extra patience as the sophomore came off the bench of the Leopards’ first five games averaging just shy of four points and two boards.  Phillips in action during the 2024-25 Patriot League season But in Lafayette’s sixth contest of the season Phillips logged his first collegiate start three assists and two boards on 4-of-6 shooting and has averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds on the season.  The Leopards have struggled as a whole on the season currently standing at 8-13 with a 3-5 conference mark but they’re in the process of developing a young core Of their top five players in minutes per game this season four are either freshman or sophomores.  “Last year we had a solid group of older guys,” he said and I think just going through the spring and the summer the most notable highlight during his standout season has been three-point shooting that’s been a strength of Phillips’ since before he got to Lafayette but it’s come alive in the past month especially.  Phillips is shooting a blistering 47 percent from long distance on the season which ranks second in the Patriot League behind teammate Alex Chaikin connecting on 21 of his 36 attempts — that’s good for just shy of 60 percent.  he tallied a career-high 27 points against Loyola Maryland shooting 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 10-of-15 from the field That capped off a four-game stretch in which Phillips shot a combined 15-of-19 from 3-point range.  much of the opportunity he’s had to prove himself as a shooter came down to a culture of trust “They’ve always known I can shoot,” he said you’ve got to shoot it.’ I think they’ve been really happy with me having that confidence and shooting open shots.” that’s what our coach preaches,” he added it’s not just Phillips’ shooting that’s earned him a starting opportunity “He's a physical kind of wing forward that really shoots the three very well,” McGarvey said “He's become a really good cutter from the perimeter and he's a really good offensive rebounder he's been doing a combination of both those things.” But of the many skills he’s developed in year two for Phillips — a known 3-point shooter at his core — one stands out above the rest He’s happiest to have his confidence back.  “I wouldn’t say I lost it freshman year I have a bit more confidence,” he said “I knew I had to step up for the team.” (Ed. The complete list of schools previewed thus far can be found here.) So much of what Malvern Prep did offensively over the last three seasons centered around Ryan Williams and Andrew Phillips won the 2022-23 Inter-Ac League MVP in helping the Friars capture a share of the league title was named All Inter-Ac First Team three straight years which included 50 victories and a pair of shared league titles The pair averaged over 17 ppg during the 2022-23 season before Williams averaged 22.0 ppg in his final prep year Williams drove much of what Malvern Prep (16-10 providing critical late-game scoring as one of the best lead guards around As both he and Phillips have moved on to play Division I basketball head coach Paul Romanczuk has a major void to fill -- and while no one person will be able to make up for what was lost the biggest question mark to Malvern Prep’s success this season will be where the production comes from Marvin Reed (above) averaged 10.8 ppg as a freshman “That’s a critical question that we’re going to have to get figured out here,” Romanczuk said “Losing [Ryan] who scored almost 1,500 points in three years and someone who They scored the ball when we needed it most and that’s certainly going to be a question that has to be answered.” Williams blossomed as a sophomore and the next two sophomores who could follow that ascent are Marvin Reed and Nick Harken averaged 10.8 ppg and posted two 20-point games including a career-high 24 points at Episcopal Academy Harken is a 6-4 wing who averaged9.2 ppg and scored 19 points against Mount Saint Joseph (Md.) Romanczuk expects huge seasons from both sophomores who will be relied on for scoring production and leadership in key situations “They both realize that in order to fulfill their goals or realize their potential of playing at the next level be coachable and have a hunger to improve,” Romanczuk said “You don’t have to tell those guys to get in the gym They both know they need to improve their perimeter shooting as the basketball word today is about spacing teams out.” What is going to make Malvern Prep so unique this season will be the addition of 6-9 freshman forward Logan Chwastyk who already holds an offer from Cal State Bakersfield Chwastyk is one of the most highly-touted prospects in the area and the versatile big man should contribute immediately “People are buzzing about him," Romanczuk said "He provides us with something we frankly have not had much of and that’s some size and ability I don’t know the last time Malvern had someone 6-8 plus and Logan has a wealth of talent The sky’s the limit and he’s very skilled for his size." as a stable post presence in his first season back on the sideline in 2021-22 then ran a lot of sets through the 6-4 Phillips on the block during his career a 6-7 right-handed pitcher who was named a baseball All-American at Duke last season and was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 12th round of the 2024 MLB Draft flourished under John Harmatuk as a two-time All Inter-Ac Second Team selection it has been some time since Malvern Prep had a big man as polished or skilled this early in their career and Romanczuk is ecstatic about Chwastyk’s future Nick Harken (12) defends Episcopal's Timmy Dennis during a game in January 2024 “His ability to shoot the ball and drive by guys is pretty darn advanced,” Romanczuk said “His feel for the game and IQ is pretty advanced for someone his age ‘It takes time for big guys to develop,’ and I say that’s generally true but I think Logan is right there as far as one of the best big guys I’ve ever been able to coach I’m excited to see his development and we’ll continue to work to show him his versatility is his best attribute.” There is certainly a youth movement leading the way for the Friars and the underclassmen will have another full season under the tutelage of an experienced group that was part of the most recent Inter-Ac title team Hanif (Junior) McFadden stands at 6-6 and the senior forward is a returning starter who avg 6.8 ppg with six double-digit scoring games last season Romanczuk notes that McFadden “is a great complementary player for us meaning he complements our players on the court” and “he’s very versatile at 6-6 6-7 where he can guard multiple positions then he’s very versatile on offense as well.” a 6-3 senior wing who was named one of four captains can play inside and out and “gives a physical presence and toughness defensively and can also knock down a shot for us,” as Romanczuk described Taig McErlane and Ryan Sims provide depth in the backcourt and will vie for minutes McErlane is a 6-foot senior lefty who has “potential to start at one of the guard spots” with his shooting and ball-handling ability Sims is a 5-9 senior and Gettysburg lacrosse commit “who can provide us some insurance as far as ball-handling,” Romanczuk said Cooper is a 6-3 junior guard who “had some really good moments over the summer He provides us with a guard who has a bigger frame He can shoot the ball and provides athleticism there.” Bryce Perkins should provide depth inside with Chwastyk and McFadden at 6-5 and the junior forward is “bouncy and long and someone we can rely on defensively.” 30 against The Hun School (N.J.) and will also play Bishop Shanahan Archbishop Wood and Salesianum (Del.) in nonleague play The Friars open Inter-Ac League play on Jan 7 against Episcopal Academy and their first matchup with reigning champion It’s the first season without either Phillips or Williams and while Romanczuk is excited for the prospect of developing a younger corps led by Reed figuring who will step up and how is one of several unanswered questions heading into the new season “We have some guys who are up to the challenge but right now a lot of our guys are inexperienced as far as being a main or second option,” Romanczuk said “We’ll have to work on it early to see who’s up to that task.” Sitting in a chair off the corner of the court at the Alan Horwitz ‘Sixth Man’ Center was a tall man with white hair and a few wrinkles on his face studying the Malvern Prep game against Germantown Academy intently Quite a bit of that focus was spent on the lanky youngster who came off the bench for Malvern Logan,” when a ball came off the rim.  when Chwastyk threw home an alley-oop slam dunk in the second quarter of Malvern Prep’s 67-55 win.  Logan Chwastyk (above) is turning heads early at Malvern Prep It’s a voice that’s become normal to Chwastyk — but sometimes he has to pinch himself and remember that most kids don’t have Doug Collins helping them out.  “You don’t really appreciate it until you think about it and it’s there,” he said “and then you’re just like ‘wow The father-in-law of Malvern Prep head coach Paul Romanczuk Collins has always been around Romanczuk’s teams when he can be from Romanczuk’s years as Carroll head coach and now in his fourth season at Malvern 1 draft pick of the Sixers (1973) and 12-year NBA head coach has helped a number of Romanczuk’s players over the years but it’s a little different when it’s someone with Chwastyk’s upside.  “He cares for these kids and he pours himself into the Northwestern basketball team And it’s great,” Romanczuk said Chwastyk started taking basketball more seriously in the summer between sixth and seventh grade That’s when the Rutledge (Delco) native it’s a move that’s clearly already paying off big-time Chwastyk’s a young forward with a ton of upside — and a hoops journey that’s only just starting to develop.  He flashed that potential on Saturday in Malvern Prep’s win which was supposed to be the second of a three-game Inter-Ac affair but became the opener of a doubleheader after clock issues forced the postponement of Haverford School and SCH Academy in the opener two assists and a steal in a well-rounded Friars effort Though he’s undoubtedly one of the most high-upside prospects around Chwastyk comes off the bench for Malvern Prep learning from senior forwards Junior McFadden and Andrew Davis while getting plenty of quality minutes for a team that’s hoping to challenge Penn Charter for the Inter-Ac title over the next few weeks.  He didn’t flash his jumper against GA but that’s another skill he’s developed over the last few years and his handle is good for a youngster at his position Though certainly he’s got a lot of work to do in all areas of his game his potential is such that Cal State-Bakersfield became his first Division I offer in the fall; if he continues to progress “I know ‘trust the process’ is always such an overused phrase and it doesn’t always bring the most positive of connotations,” Romanczuk said “but that’s what (his family’s) doing they’re looking at it with more of a long viewpoint than a short-term one of the players of the game for us on a few occasions.  “He has a really good understanding of that and where he fits on the team and I just want him to enjoy everything that Malvern has to offer [...] he’s a great kid and we’re lucky to have him.” who plays his summer ball for Team Final on the Nike EYBL circuit certainly doesn’t mind coming off the bench knowing that his body still needs time to adjust to the physicality of the varsity level especially as he still could be adding a couple more inches to his frame before it’s all said and said He’s happy to take advantage of having a couple seniors ahead of him to see how to play it when he enters usually around the mid-point of the first quarter I just watch his matchup and see what he likes to do especially for defense,” Chwastyk said Before he even began his freshman year at Malvern Prep an invitation to a USA Basketball junior national team minicamp in October Over the course of four days in Colorado Springs he got an opportunity to play with and against some of the best young players in the country working with some of the best high school coaches in the nation as well.  He said the biggest thing he learned was that “(it) doesn’t matter if you miss a shot doesn’t matter if you blow an assignment you’re going to come out of the game Malvern Prep’s win improved the Friars to 11-4 (2-0 Inter-Ac) with 15 points apiece from sophomores Marvin Reed and Nick Harken leading the way along with 13 from senior guard Taig McErlane The Friars were up 36-18 at half after a 22-8 second quarter six rebounds) scoring 14 in the second half to keep the Patriots within striking distance.  The Friars will find out in the next week if they’re in the mix for an Inter-Ac title playing at the Haverford School and then hosting Penn Charter on Tuesday and then Friday MALVERN — When Ryan Williams and his 1,500 points graduated from Malvern Prep last spring the Friars were left with quite a vacancy in the scoring department It was evident no one was ready to fill those big shoes themselves Coach Paul Romanczuk’s squad is perfectly fine with the all hands on deck approach as it showed Saturdays in a 48-45 home win against La Salle The Friars went without a double-figure scorer getting scoring contributions from all eight players who entered the game in the comeback win “It has been a little bit of a dry spell on the offensive end without Ryan but I feel like as the season goes on we continue to keep getting better on the offensive end,” said senior Taig McErlane “We’re sharing the ball a lot more We’re really trusting each other a lot and that’s what we need because the points will come We’re going to start knocking shots down.” Taig McErlane led Malvern Prep with nine points in Saturday's win The Explorers were the balanced group early Saturday with six different scorers getting on the board before the end of the first quarter Sophomore Nick Neri led La Salle (1-3) with 12 La Salle went on a 19-2 run at the end of the first into the second quarter to go up 24-12 with about five and a half minutes left in the first half Malvern Prep (4-2) tightened things to 30-25 by the break a putback by Neri in the final seconds making it a two-possession game Defense was key for the Friars as they held La Salle to just 25 points total over the final three quarters after the offensive explosion in the first Malvern limited La Salle to four points in the third to knot things 34-34 entering the fourth make sure that we’re all set on defense all the little things,” senior wing Junior McFadden said McFadden was a representation of doing the “little things” in Saturday’s win He stuffed the statsheet with seven points He helped slow down La Salle big man Grayson McKeogh after six early points Malvern’s sophomores sparked them in the fourth Marvin Reed had six of his eight and Nick Harken had four of his eight over the final eight minutes Reed pulled up to give Malvern a 44-41 lead with 1:28 left Then McFadden had the sequence of the game The 6-foot-6 forward swatted what looked to be an easy bucket for McKeogh on the other end and got himself to the line when the Friars got the ball to extend the advantage to 46-41 with 49 seconds to play.  “I saw Joey O’Brien running down with the ball hit a little jab at him knowing there was a guy behind me,” McFadden said “I didn’t know if he was going to go up or not but I knew I was going to try and make a play either way He passed it a little early and I knew I had a little time to turn and jump and try to get the ball and that’s what happened was able to get it out to Marv and they fouled.” Junior McFadden had a game changing block for Malvern against La Salle McErlane left the door open with two misses at the line but knocked in a pair with 16.4 to play to push the lead to six and put the game away ‘I gotta make my first two,’” McErlane said I kind of just zoned out and acted like I was in the gym after practice and knocked them down.” Harken and Reed started as freshmen last season with McFadden The rest of the rotation is still getting comfortable in their roles assists) left their imprint on the game for Malvern.  getting the team out of an early offensive rut with a four-point play and adding another triple in the second quarter At the foul line with the game on the line is not a position he has been in before in his first three years at Malvern but he’ll likely have more crunch time moments as the season progresses “I would say I’m still trying to find my way because last year I was kind of on and off,” McErlane said so I’m still stepping in and getting my feet under me but I’m starting to find my role and it’s easier to help other guys find theirs when I’m fine.” The Friars are already having a lot of fun this year McErlane said it’s a close-knit group he pointed to the complications the coaching staff is having pairing roomates for an upcoming trip They usually like to pair teammates who don’t know each other as well but McErlane said he could be matched up with anybody Ensuring that dynamic stays that way throughout the rest of the season is just important for McFadden and McErlane as putting the ball through the hoop it’s really about bringing everyone together really being a family,” McFadden said “I find that we play better when we play for each other and not for ourselves we didn’t have anyone in double digits and we still got the win.” 2025Go inside Malvern Prep: One of the top lacrosse programs in the It happened Friday night at Wakefield Stadium and the 50-48 final sent Hillsdale to the regional finals in the OHSAA Division VII tournament Another guess is that no team ever took a lead with a half-minute left in the first half then took another lead with 30 seconds left in the game then lost the first lead and eventually the game on Hail Marys of almost exactly the same length senior Malvern quarterback Jared Witherow hit Roy Simmons on a slant and watched the junior receiver turn it into a 35-yard touchdown A 2-point conversion provided a 48-44 lead The soundtrack was along the lines of everybody in Malvern bursting out of their houses and screaming at the top of their lungs But Hillsadale quarterback Kael Lewis passed the Falcons to the Malvern 36 with the clock stopped at 1.2 seconds Along the lines of his completing a heavily guarded 37-yard pass to Brock Bower on the final play of the first half Lewis won the game with a 36-yard completion to Hayden McFadden Malvern players tipped the ball before the Hillsdale player caught it as Hillsdale made its desperate last drive Malvern’s head coach when the Hornets reached the 2008 state semifinals said this would be the greatest win in Malvern history When the fateful last pass got tipped and caught as time expired it was a bit much for current head coach Matt Chiurco to digest “It went from the best win to the worst loss,” Chiurco said a three-year starter who arguably was the best QB in school history mingled in a swarm of Falcons faithful who stayed on the field for the longest time Neither of his Hail Marys would have worked had he not scrambled to a place where he could set Lewis entered the game with 2,417 passing yards and 27 touchdowns McFadden arrived with 1,116 receiving yards and 14 TDs “I saw the ball in the air,” McFadden said Malvern was trying for a third playoff win for just the second time in school history Chiurco advised his players to “treat it like any other game.” Funny It was Malvern’s game until the first Hail Mary and it might have stayed Malvern’s game without the first one By the time the third quarter was running out Hillsdale running back Owen Sloan was unstoppable Then Hornet junior Josh Untch made an interception near the goal line A 55-yard touchdown catch from Simmons made it 44-34 with 5:15 left in the fourth quarter An onside kick recovery soon was followed by another bomb to Smith A sneak by Witherow made it 44-40 with 4:05 left on a defensive stop and another Simmons touchdown “(Witherow) has such a strong arm,” said Hillsdale head coach Trevor Cline “There’s nowhere he can’t throw the football and he fits it in any window “He reads the defense and finds the weak spot and delivers the ball on time You can see the vast majority of opponents game plan to slow him down and he still finds ways to get open and make big plays Both sides brought large cheering sections 3 Malvern and as such got the home grandstand and dibs on the band playing the national anthem a train coming from Hillsdale’s direction passed just behind the Malvern crowd on third down with Hillsdale deep in its own territory defensive end Braidon Miller stepped in front of a Lewis pass and returned an interception 10 yards for a touchdown and Malvern’s defense couldn’t stop strong It added up to what Cline suggested is the best win in Hillsdale prescribed burn at Malvern Hill is to reduce build-up of flammable fuels reduce woody and non-native species density and foster native meadow vegetation The burn will also enhance the valuable wildlife habitat associated with the native plant communities and reduce the park’s maintenance costs To ensure that the burns remain under the control of firefighters a burn will be carried out only proceed; if the conditions start favorably and change the fire will move slowly through the area and stop at established burn breaks although neighbors may smell smoke during and shortly after the burn period the areas to be burned are surrounded by a wide gravel road The park will have no fewer than 8 certified wildland fire fighters on hand and will be assisted by Henrico County Fire Department to ensure that each fire is conducted safely and without incident The burn is expected to last no longer than eight hours the park trail and parsonage parking lot at Malvern Hill will be
