the Manassas Park man accused of murdering his wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt and hiding her body
appeared in court Friday morning for a hearing
The hearing addressed the Commonwealth's request to summon three out-of-state witnesses
including two local reporters and a resident of Pennsylvania
There was no objection from the defense on that motion and the judge granted the request for all three witnesses
“Naresh Bhatt conducted several interviews with the press prior to his arrest," explained John Fishwick
“I'm sure the Commonwealth’s Attorney wants to play those interviews [at the trial]
'He did not seem like an innocent man
or somebody who was really distraught over his wife being missing.'”
Fishwick expects the reporters will need to authenticate the interviews as business records
but he ultimately doesn't expect them to have to testify at the trial

Mamta went missing and has not been seen ever since
Naresh was later accused of killing her and was officially charged with concealing her dead body
court records revealed that Naresh now faces murder and physically defile dead body charges
"I want people to know that we were here to get justice for Mamta
and I think we accomplished that today by getting the first-degree murder charge," Chief Mario Lugo of the Manassas Park Police Department said during a press conference Monday evening
Naresh Bhatt spoke publicly on August 14 at an initial press conference at police headquarters
and that was one of the things we were trying to see-- what he was saying to the public
That’s not what he was telling us was going on
so there were some incorrect statements being made by him
'Hey what’s going on here?'"
Naresh appeared in court several times -- each time with more evidence that connected Naresh to the crime
In court documents 7News acquired in August
three evidence pictures showed what appeared to be blood stains inside the couple's home
One of the pictures highlighted a stained carpet of a room
and we confirmed that it belongs to Mamta," Chief Lugo said
Watch the Manassas Police Department's press conference on the charges
Mamta was seen through a surveillance camera sitting outside the hospital
This was the last time Mamta was seen at work
Mamta's friends and family haven't heard from her ever since
Prince William County and Manassas Park Police have been actively searching for clues that might lead to Mamta's whereabouts
Investigators conducted multiple searches of the couple's Heather Court home
police searched nearby parks and other areas in hopes of finding evidence
Court documents and evidence presented inside the courtroom throughout the past couple of months linked Naresh to the crime
Although Mamta's body has not yet been found
prosecutors believe Naresh murdered his 28-year-old wife and hid her body
and community members supporting justice for Mamta held a news conference outside a Prince William County
Naresh was supposed to appear before a judge on his two new charges on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
but the hearing was continued because there was no interpreter
it was the chief public defender speaking on Naresh's behalf
it was the senior assistant public defender
7News spoke with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office after the decision to continue the hearing
and we were told it's possible the new charges could be consolidated into one trial with his original charge
Naresh's hearing is now set for Wednesday at 9 a.m
Dates for his trial are expected to be set
7News is being told the first few months of next year are already booked for trials
woman has been indicted on a charge of murder and physically defiling a dead body
Naresh Bhatt, 37, was charged in August with concealing the body of Mamta Kafle Bhatt
— who was last seen in July and whose body still hasn’t been found
He is now scheduled to appear in Prince William Circuit Court on Wednesday to be formally charged
after a Nepalese interpreter wasn’t available Tuesday morning
Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo said one reason for the updated charges was that they were able to match Mamta’s DNA to blood found at the couple’s home
Lugo said “there’s a lot of evidence” in the case against Naresh
“I know the crime scene was a big one
The forensic unit at Prince William County said it was one of the worst crime scenes they’ve seen,” he said
The chief added that he was sorry Mamta’s family found out more details of the charges because of “the courts posting it before I had an opportunity to talk to them.”
Police have not yet talked to Naresh Bhatt
but they have sent all of the collected evidence to prosecutors
who “felt confident” enough to take it to the grand jury Monday and secure the indictment
“I feel we have a strong case for not having a body,” Lugo said
though he added that authorities still hope to find Mamta’s remains
Lugo alluded to the notion that Mamta was likely dismembered inside the home
we believed that she was murdered,” he told reporters
Investigators conducted their first search warrant when Naresh Bhatt was home with the couple’s baby and discovered blood in the bedroom as well as the bathroom
He added that evidence shows that Bhatt cut up his wife’s body
In a detailed timeline, Prince William County prosecutors have said Mamta’s last video call with her mother was on July 29
which is the same day police believe she was killed
prosecutors said Naresh Bhatt dropped the couple’s daughter off at a babysitter’s apartment early in the morning
he was seen on camera dumping several plastic and trash bags into a dumpster at the babysitter’s apartment complex
he went shopping at Home Depot and Walmart
That evening he bought a “40-pack of extra strong black trash bags,” according to senior assistant commonwealth’s attorney Sarah Sami
Naresh Bhatt was also captured on video in Falls Church retrieving bags from his Tesla and putting them into a trash compactor
but his phone was inactive and not with him at the time
over 150 gallons of water were consumed by the Bhatt residence — far more than the typical three or four gallons
Naresh Bhatt was charged with a felony count of concealing a dead body and placed in jail
A prosecutor had said in court over the summer that the amount of blood found in the home indicated injuries that were not survivable
The investigation continued into her death
argued that Naresh Bhatt was still entitled to a speedy trial on the count of concealing a dead body
The trial on that charge was scheduled for next week
a former hospital co-worker of Mamta and spokesperson for her family
said the family feels “a sense of relief” that a charge has finally come
“Their goal has been two things: justice for Mamta and securing a future for her baby
And that’s what guides their steps every day,” Wirth said at the Monday news conference
who told WTOP she was a survivor of domestic violence
said she felt a connection to Mamta and helped in the earlier searches for her remains
“People who have narcissistic tendencies
he had no remorse,” adding that she has long believed Naresh Bhatt killed his wife: “I just wish that he would just have admitted it
and save everybody the time and grief,” allowing Mamta’s family to grieve

7News has been following the case of Naresh Bhatt, 37, and his wifeMamta Kafle Bhatt since she first went missing over the summer
Naresh was arrested in connection to Mamta's disappearance and charged with Prohibition Against Concealment of a Dead Body
Mamta went missing at the end of July and police presume she is dead. The defense has claimed Mamta could still be alive and missing
His public defender is working to get him out of jail
while prosecutors are working to keep him there
claiming police used a "false statement" to obtain it so there was no probable cause to arrest him
mentioning conversations with the prosecution Wednesday
He stated possible concessions were made that could be more beneficial to his client
but said he may potentially refile the motion at another date
Ben-Avraham did not elaborate on the potential concessions made
"You're being slightly cryptic here," Judge Irving told him
She also raised concerns about rescheduling the hearing if a new motion is filed
saying finding a Nepalese interpreter took a lot of calls
"We're very limited in our timing right now," she told Ben-Avraham
The prosecution did not object so the judge agreed to withdraw the motion for Thursday's hearing
Naresh's next court date is a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Nov
“[The defense] probably got some information that was better than they were going to get
because they were going to likely lose this motion," opined John Fishwick
Attorney for the Western District of Virginia
"I doubt the Commonwealth's Attorney is conceding anything," he added
"They may have provided information about how the search warrant went down and what their information is about the movement of the body
That’s information that should be disclosed to the defense.”
Mamta’s disappearance has sparked an outpouring of support from the northern Virginia and Nepali community
Her supporters have gathered at every court hearing and spoke outside the courthouse Thursday morning
Bina Khadkalama called the recent hearings called by the defense a "distraction."
She said although she is concerned and anxious
she is assured that "whatever time is given to the Commonwealth
they have been utilizing it and working very hard."
Khadkalama and other supporters are hoping for a capital murder charge
Regardless of whether his charge is upgraded
they want Naresh to serve the maximum sentence possible
that so many of us that didn't know her
connected so deeply and showed up at the right time to support each other
and hopefully give Mamta the justice that she deserves," said fellow supporterBrianna Lambert
the Manassas Park man connected to the disappearance of his wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt earlier this year
will have a September 2025 trial after recently being charged with murder and physically defiling a dead body
Naresh waived his right to a speedy trial Wednesday morning
His defense requested his cases be combined to one trial
Trial dates were set aside for 16 days on Monday through Thursday
The judge also addressed a request from Court TV to film the trial
saying there will be a hearing sometime after February to go over that
The defense also asked whether the Court will make sure interpreters are available for the trial
which court officials tell us is standard procedure to request the Virginia Supreme Court to assign interpreters
Manassas Park Police and prosecutors have long speculated that Naresh killed his wife Mamta and disposed of her body
a grand jury indicted Naresh for murder and physically defiling a dead body
Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo held a press conference
saying blood from the couple’s home matched Mamta’s DNA
He said the evidence shows he dismembered her
A community member said Naresh looked somewhat shocked when he heard the charges from the judge
"I think he realized that there is a homicide," the community member said during a news conference after the hearing
"I don't know whether he had communicated with his attorney or not at the moment
Naresh's defense initially sought a speedy trial after being charged with prohibition against concealment of a dead body
Wednesday's decision to combine his cases together canceled that trial
on the same day he was supposed to have a preliminary hearing for it
who at one point expressed frustrations over Naresh's efforts to hasten a trial
said during a press conference following Wednesday's hearing that they are upset that the trials will be pushed back
They said they hope for justice for Mamta and echoed a promise to attend every one of Naresh's court hearings
"We thought that they were going to go ahead with the pre-trial for the concealment of the dead body," a community member told news outlets
"But they decided to go ahead and just put it all in one which probably does make sense for the court's time
but we do have faith in the justice system."
Naresh's status hearing is set for March 20 at 9 a.m

concerns with displacing homes and other factors
The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority
which allocates regional revenues for transportation projects with a focus on relieving congestion

Prince William County officials remain determined to find a solution to the traffic issues in the Route 28 corridor

MANASSAS, Va. (7News) — The husband of Mamta Kafle Bhatt
a missing mother from Manassas Park who disappeared in late July, will have his criminal trial before the year ends despite concerns from Commonwealth attorneys
is scheduled to appear for a criminal trial on Dec
He was charged with Prohibition Against Concealment of a Dead Body in connection with Mamta’s disappearance
Another pre-trial date is set for November 20 while Naresh's arraignment is scheduled for Dec
Prosecutors in the courtroom said the December trial date is "not convenient or fair to the commonwealth," due to the long list of witnesses they need to speak with and pushed for a February 2025 trial
The defense said they weren't available during that time
the defense strategy has been pedal to the metal," said John Fishwick
offering his independent expertise as a former U.S
Attorney for the Western District of Virginia who now does criminal defense
He called the strategy for a speedy trial "risky and unusual."
“Now it'll be time for 'put up or shut up' for each side," he explained
"Does the Commonwealth have enough evidence and does the defense raise the issue of
'Is there not proof beyond a reasonable doubt?'"
"The battle lines have been drawn," Fishwick added
"Time will tell if this strategy of the defense works.”
“There’s some disappointment when we talk about the speedy trial good play by the defense to essentially block out their calendar," said Holly Wirth
Her supporters gathered outside and inside the Prince William County Judicial Center courthouse on Monday
Some wore scrubs and "Justice for Mamta" shirts in support
Wirth also added "It is the absolute right thing for his daughter if he could take accountability for his actions
I will go on the record and say he's a coward and he's not going to do that."
Flyers were handed out to the public outside the courthouse asking people to come forward with information
The defense confirmed they had received theevidence from theprosecutors including text messages
videos/photos of Mamta leaving the hospital
Prosecutors say there was a history of domestic abuse in the family. If you or someone you love is a survivor of abuse, help is available at https://thehotline.org or 1.800.799.7233.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected Monday afternoon and evening. Some may become severe with large hail and high winds.

located at [redacted] in the City of Manassas Park
a substantial amount of digital and forensic evidence consistent with her death was recovered
There was evidence in the residence indicating the body was inside the residence and dragged out of the residence.”
police and the commonwealth’s attorney officially announced in a press release Naresh had been arrested and charged with concealing a dead body
arguing that the detective who filed the criminal complaint lied about the body being dragged from the house
Captain Steven Loving said the detective who filed the criminal complaint was advised by the magistrate to include details about the body being moved from the house
saying she wrote that part in a rush: “She assumed since the body had been dragged inside the house
it must have also been dragged out of the house.” He said she had been working for over 30 hours straight which could have led to her “poor choice of words.”
stating it lacks any indication the detective possessed “an ill-intent to mislead the magistrate,” adding her “perhaps poor choice of words” was a “reasonable interference given the substantial amount of digital and forensic evidence recovered.”
law enforcement was notified the Tesla they were awaiting records for had been sold at CarMax in Dulles
Prosecutors said Bhatt sold it the day after Manassas Park police had been at the residence and asked for consent to look into the vehicle
At some point in the latter days of August

Also during the course of the investigation
a Manassas Park detective spoke with two people who indicated Naresh had contacted them to do a quick short sale of his house
To detail a past history of domestic violence
20 that someone saw Naresh slap Mamta in the face
Sami also stated Mamta was known to confide with coworkers and friends about her concerns with her marriage
and posted on Facebook groups for single and divorced mothers looking for help
countered to the judge that Naresh told police the couple was trying to sell the house and was going through a divorce
“They have no evidence that she is dead,” he testified
“They have no evidence that they have body parts that have led to death.”
Mamta had one appointment left to gain her United States citizenship
