leaders are launching an initiative to help new residents feel a sense of belonging in the area Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz and Mandan Mayor James Froelich along with the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC launched the "Where Home is More than Hello" initiative during a Thursday news conference The effort seeks to engage residents and businesses in the community to become more welcoming to new residents The program aims to help newcomers feel welcome in the community and encourage them to make the Bismarck-Mandan area their permanent home City officials say retaining new residents strengthens the local economy through increased business revenue and a broader tax base while also enriching the lives of current residents by fostering connections with new community members Schmitz said achieving the goal of retaining new residents requires a cultural shift "We are a friendly community -- both of us Mandan and Bismarck -- we say 'hello' when we're on the street but that's only when we're passing by," Schmitz said but when we are asking people to consider taking the next step and actually welcoming people home into their friendship circles and family and gatherings Froelich said the community welcomes around 1,000 new residents a year from many walks of life Some are local college graduates from out-of-state who choose to stay and build their futures while others include retirees seeking access to health care professionals bringing their skills to the region and immigrants looking for safety and opportunity Making new residents feel welcome can be as simple as introducing yourself to someone new in your neighborhood inviting a neighbor or co-worker out for coffee or fostering a workplace culture that values belonging connection and shared commitment to making everyone feel at home," he said "Whether you live here for generations or just arrive "We want to show that whether you're moving here from across the country or just across the state but where you belong,"
