presented with their “big check” at Lottery Headquarters after claiming the April 9 Lotto jackpot prize
BATON ROUGE ---- After picking up roadside trash as part of a community volunteer effort
Ronald Myers stopped by the Circle K store on Highway 59 in Mandeville to make quick change of a $100 bill by purchasing five Louisiana Lottery Lotto quick picks for the April 9 drawing
The long-time player would usually use his children’s birthdays to choose his numbers
Little did he know that this quick trip would change his life to the tune of $2.4 million dollars
once he discovered his Lotto numbers matched all six in the previous evening’s drawing
he patiently waited for his wife of 35 years
“You’re not going to believe this,” he told her
“Did we win the Lotto?” she asked jokingly
The couple checked the ticket several times before the reality set in -- they won the $2,445,468 Lotto jackpot
The couple claimed their prize at Lottery Headquarters in Baton Rouge on April 25
taking home $1,785,196.02 after state and federal tax withholdings
The winning numbers for the April 9 drawing were 04-07-23-34-38-39
Myers said he plans to invest the money back into his business
The couple also plans to splurge on upgrading their upcoming Disneyland trip
will receive a selling bonus of 1% of the prize or $24,454.68
For security purposes, the Lottery strongly encourages players to sign the back of their tickets immediately after purchasing. More information about Lotto and other jackpot winners can be found on the Lottery’s website, www.louisianalottery.com/lotto
Lottery ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age
Draw-style game tickets must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing

The landmark at Mandeville's harbor across from the yatch club will be spruced up under a new contract approved by the City Council
Including in the deferred maintenance will be replacement of the gazebo's worn old railings
The gazebo at the Mandeville harbor will get a facelift under a contract approved April 10 by the City Council
The council unanimously voted to accept the low bid of $467,996 from Scottmoore LLC and authorized Mayor Clay Madden to sign the contract for the long-anticipated project to spruce up the pavilion
The 10 bids submitted ranged to a high of $798,000
The open-air structure at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Lakeshore Drive on the Mandeville lakefront was built in 2008
and city officials said “years and years” of deferred maintenance has left it in need of improvements
Councilman at large Jason Zuckerman said money for refurbishing the gazebo was included in past city budgets
but the repairs could not be started until design work was completed and other loose ends were tied up
Zuckerman said the city was able to “add scope” to the project while keeping it generally in line with the original cost estimates
The additional elements involve improvements to the area surrounding the gazebo that is located directly across the street from the Pontchartrain Yacht Club
“I’m very excited to get this project going,” he said
The 17-year-old gazebo perched above the waterway leading from Lake Pontchartrain into the Mandeville harbor
is partially surrounded by rusted railings
Benches located inside the structure also show sign of wear
and repainting the gazebo and installing a new steel railing system
The contractor will also make electrical repairs and replace the lighting system
the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Jackson Avenue will be reconfigured and improvements made to surrounding sidewalks

Print To the editor: I would like to address this letter to the firefighters and other first responders in Los Angeles
My husband and I live in Mandeville Canyon
To say we were in harm’s way is an understatement
We were in the direct path of the Palisades fire
apparently destined to be the next group of homes to go up in flames
dedicated person to leave loved ones behind and sacrifice his or her own personal safety and life to help thousands of complete strangers
overpowering one of the worst disasters in California history
If the fires weren’t stopped at Mandeville Canyon
it would have been an additional loss of unfathomable proportion
But you extraordinary men and women risked everything to make sure that didn’t happen
Just as these horrendous fires will be remembered as one of the worst events ever in California
your work will also have a place in history
You fought an impossible battle and would not accept defeat
my heartfelt thanks to all the firefighters
National Guard and all other brave souls for doing such an extraordinary job

Since 1966, UC San Diego’s Mandeville Art Gallery has presented highly experimental contemporary art within the context of a major research university and the greater region. The gallery also serves as a laboratory for learning about curatorial practice
with programs for students to gain hands-on skills in museum studies
In recognition of Director and Chief Curator Ceci Moss’s compelling vision
$150,000 grant by the New York-based Teiger Foundation
The grant is designed to advance innovative curatorial practice in contemporary art
with freedom to support a range of projects
from exhibitions to public programs and new commissions
“We couldn’t be prouder of Director Ceci Moss’s vision for the gallery,” said Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities Cristina Della Coletta
“Support from Teiger Foundation will enable Moss to advance innovative programming for the Mandeville Art Gallery
and the institution's success will be a crucial driver for ArtsConnect—the Chancellor’s Arts Initiative that activates the entire university as a lively location to learn about and experience art.”
The gallery has thrived under Moss’s leadership, whose position was strategically established by the university as part of the Mandeville Art Gallery’s reopening in March 2023 following a multi-million-dollar (and award-winning) building renovation
UC San Diego is poised to become one of the leading destinations for arts and culture in our binational region
“We are thrilled to receive funding from Teiger Foundation to bring our ambitious projects to life and support the gallery’s interdisciplinary research and educational instruction,” said Moss
“Our vision is to function as a teaching gallery and experimental laboratory powered by the work of the most important artists of our time.”
Mandeville Art Gallery presents up to four solo or group exhibitions that feature prominent local
there are many exciting shows on the horizon that explore climate change
the gallery will present the program "Text Messages" on the building’s massive exterior LED screen that will feature site-specific works displaying text manipulated and hijacked using programming and code
the group exhibition "Omni Intelligent" will examine the intertwined relationships between non-human and human entities as artificial intelligence is integrated into contemporary life
Other programming will include the annual MFA in Visual Arts group exhibition
which offers a preview of the graduating cohort’s final solo shows under the advisorship of Southern California-based curators
Mandeville Art Gallery will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a year-long suite of programs to mark the significant milestone
Moss is exploring the possibility of hosting "Harold Cohen: AARON" (curated by Christiane Paul
curator of digital art at the Whitney Museum of American Art) in spring 2026
Cohen was a faculty member of UC San Diego’s Department of Visual Arts from 1968 until his retirement in 1994
public relations and museum education through part-time employment
Several other initiatives at the gallery foster experiential learning—from the many activities led by the gallery’s student organization
all of the exhibitions actively nurture partnerships and connections across the campus community
For instance, the current LaJuné McMillian commission for the exterior video façade of the gallery, “The Portal’s Keeper,” was created through a workshop with UC San Diego students
co-sponsored by the Black Studies Project (BSP)
And the upcoming exhibition “Helen and Newton Harrison: California Work” was curated by alumna Tatiana Sizonenko
students are connected to professional opportunities beyond UC San Diego
These have included internships with museums in Balboa Park and mixers with the San Diego Emerging Museum Professionals Group
“Training the next generation of arts leaders is an important part of our mission,” said Moss
“The students who engage with the gallery carry on its highly innovative
experimental and socially conscious approach in their own career trajectories
This is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work.”
COVINGTON --- District Attorney Collin Sims reports that on February 28
Tammany Parish jury returned guilty verdicts against 43-year-old Damien Chance White of Mandeville after deliberating for approximately four hours
White was convicted of first degree rape of a child under the age thirteen and two counts of sexual battery of a child under the age thirteen
Assistant District Attorney Zachary Popovich with the Special Victims Unit and Assistant District Attorney Le’Anne Malnar presented the case to the jury with Judge Alan Black presiding over the 5-day trial
Tammany Parish Sheriff Office was the lead detective on the case
a pre-teen girl sent a note to her school guidance counselor concerning “inappropriate stuff at home” and how she felt unsafe going home
the child disclosed she had been sexually assaulted
Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office which opened an investigation
Forensic interviewer Callie Huggins with the Children’s Advocacy Center’s Hope House in Covington interviewed the child to obtain additional information
the girl said Damien White touched her inappropriately in two separate incidents and then raped her on a third incident
She said White told her several times not to tell anyone
The victim was taken to the CARE Center at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans for medical care
the victim testified and her recorded forensic interview was played for the jury
Prosecutors also introduced evidence that while stationed in Norfolk
the defendant was caught having sex with a 14-year-old girl
After prosecutors completed the presentation of their evidence
Prosecutors confronted him with a recorded phone conversation during which he pressured the victim in Virginia to keep quiet about his actions so he would not get in trouble
Prosecutors asserted the defendant did the same thing to the victim in the case presented to the jury
which showed the lengths he was willing to go
During his closing argument at the conclusion of the trial
defense counsel said the victim’s mother was behind the victim’s false accusations
He accused the victim of rehearsing her testimony and said he hated having to call her a liar to her face but that’s what she was
He gave prosecutors an “A” for their effort in trying a “dog case” but that an acquittal was the only just outcome
ADA Zachary Popovich reminded the jurors how palpable the victim’s trauma was during her testimony and how
the defendant often laughed while on the witness stand
He argued it was ludicrous to think the young victim in this case could make up such a detailed accusation and dupe expert after expert
He also pointed out how the defendant’s sexual exploitation of the young girl in Virginia demonstrated his lustful disposition toward children
He said the victim in this case and her family have been living in trauma every day for the last four years
He lamented the young victim has had to wait four years for someone to listen to her and she deserves justice now
Judge Black remanded White to jail pending sentencing which he set for March 31
First degree rape carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison
Sexual battery of a child under age thirteen carries a sentence of 25 to 99 years in prison
