Print Skechers
the Manhattan Beach footwear brand that makes athletic and walking shoes
New York investment firm 3G Capital will acquire the company in a transaction that is expected to close in the third quarter, 3G Capital said Monday.
Business
Manhattan Beach-based Skechers announced record sales in the first quarter of 2024
while other brands like Nike see weak earnings
Skechers had a market value of about $7.4 billion before the deal was announced
The $9.4-billion valuation reflects a price of $63 per share when accounting for Class A and Class B shares
Shares of the company were up nearly 25% on Monday but had fallen 28% year to date through Friday’s close
founder-led brand with a track record of creativity and innovation
We have immense admiration for the business that this team has built
and look forward to supporting the Company’s next chapter,” 3G said in a statement
The sale announcement follows a decision by Skechers to not offer full-year earnings guidance in April
citing “macroeconomic uncertainty stemming from global trade policies.”
President Trump’s aggressive tariffs have impacted trade with major manufacturing hubs including Vietnam and China
where Skechers makes a large portion of its shoes
Trump placed a 145% tax on goods imported from China
The tariffs and subsequent trade wars have raised consumer prices and hit large and small retailers who rely on importers’ goods in Southern California and elsewhere. Skechers is adjusting its prices and working with vendors to mitigate costs, Bloomberg reported.
“Particularly in this environment, where there’s some economic shock waves going through the consumer products industry, not being publicly traded can be an advantage,” said Lloyd Greif, an investment banker with connections to Skechers Chief Executive Robert Greenberg.
Greif expects the partnership between Skechers and 3G Capital to be mutually beneficial. The footwear company imports 40% of its product from China, Greif said, and will have to restructure its supply chain in light of the tariffs.
Skechers’ affordable prices and focus on comfort have provided a strong foundation for the company, Greif added, preparing it for economic downturns.
The company reported record quarterly sales last month of $2.41 billion, more than a 7% increase from last year. In 2024, Skechers saw $8.97 billion in annual sales and sold 27 million units. Net earnings during the quarter dropped 2% to $202.4 million.
Nike Inc. has named Elliott Hill as its president and CEO effective, replacing John Donahoe, who will retire next month.
The footwear company, known for its original designs including Hands Free Slip-Ins and Shape Ups with arch support, was founded in California in 1992. The venture began by selling boots to loggers and has since expanded to offer a range of sneakers for adults and kids.
The company has a flagship retail storefront in Manhattan Beach and hundreds of locations across the country, including several more in Southern California.
Skechers was founded by current Chief Executive Robert Greenberg, who will continue to lead the company after its acquisition. Greenberg has prioritized comfortable styles at affordable price points, a strategy that has helped his company flourish while competitors such as Nike and Adidas have faltered.
Analysts and company leadership attribute the brand’s success to a strategy built around constant innovation and a diverse array of footwear products.
Skechers declined to comment on the deal. The company’s share price closed Monday at $61.39, down around 8% year to date.

The 18-year-old bagged another victory just days ago, winning the Mission League doubles championship. In a photo, the beaming Levi stands beside teammate Cooper Schwartz, holding up four fingers — one for each of his four straight league doubles championships.
Those achievements had to be a bit of a balm for the Levi family, coming just a few months after their home in Pacific Palisades burned in the January firestorm. The family had relocated to the South Bay.
It felt beyond comprehension, then, when Loyola Principal Jamal Adams emailed students and staff of the Catholic Jesuit school Sunday to inform them that Levi had been killed in a traffic accident just hours earlier, a month before his high school graduation.
“Braun was a shining presence in our Loyola family,” Adams wrote, “bringing light, joy, and inspiration to everyone he touched.”
The principal invited the Loyola school family to a prayer vigil on campus Sunday evening. “All members of our community are welcome to join us as we gather in unity and remembrance,” Adams wrote.
Manhattan Beach police said they had arrested a 33-year-old Los Angeles woman on suspicion of drunk driving and homicide in connection with the crash, which they said occurred after midnight Sunday morning.
A brief news release from the department said only that a call came in at 12:46 a.m. about a traffic accident involving a pedestrian in the 100 block of South Sepulveda Boulevard. They found the victim, whom they did not identify, lying in the street.
The police statement said that Jenia Belt of Los Angeles had been arrested in the crash. Belt remained in the Manhattan Beach jail Sunday, a police watch commander said.
Friends showered Levi’s social media accounts with tributes to him. Levi was to attend the University of Virginia in the fall.
“Anyone who got to know you knows how lucky they are,” said one message. “You never met a stranger, and left an impact on everyone you met. I’m going to live and love as big as you every day.”
Said another: “Whether you were lucky enough to cross paths with him for an hour or a lifetime, he left an impression. It was impossible to be sad or bored whenever Braun was around, and his gift for lifting those around him was truly singular.”
The images from Levi’s social media hint at a prototypical Southern California upbringing. He’s wading in a High Sierra lake with his family, arm-in-arm with buddies on the beach, posing for a selfie with actor Adam Sandler and rocking a pink suit and a fedora beside a horse racing track.
Just two years ago, another Loyola High student-athlete died in the final weeks of his high school career. Ryan Times, a pitcher on the baseball team, was struck and killed by a train in April of 2023, when the school was on spring break.
Brian Held, coach of the Loyola varsity tennis team, called Levi, a three-year captain, “probably the most decorated player to ever play for the school.”
Held also taught Levi in AP Economics and Statistics. “We are all stunned, devastated and heartbroken with this tragedy,” Held said via email. “Braun was the most amazing, all-around leader, whom everyone loved, even his opponents. He was just that type of kid — unique and special. As one of his teachers, I witnessed how he brought joy to everyone.”
Levi is survived by his parents and an older sister.
Times staff writer Eric Sondheimer contributed to this report.
James Rainey has covered multiple presidential elections, the media and the environment, mostly at the Los Angeles Times, which he first joined in 1984. He was part of Times teams that won three Pulitzer Prizes.

The City of Manhattan Beach has purchased the former U.S
located in the middle of downtown adjacent to Von’s
The purchase was approved by the Council at its April 1 meeting and sale closed April 15.
City Manager Talyn Mirzakhanian told the council the site’s location
both near the Civic Center and in the heart of town
made both a good investment and a potentially new public-serving facility.
“The site holds tremendous civic value with numerous possibilities for community benefit,” she said
“At approximately 16,570 square feet across three parcels
this acquisition presents a rare opportunity to shape an important segment of our downtown area
the city will retain complete control over what gets developed on the site
This means we can ensure any future use aligns with our community’s character and needs.”
Mirzakhanian’s comments came in the midst of a council meeting that included the passage of amendments to the City’s code that were required by the state in part to encourage more Density Bonus housing projects
and a lot of angry resident testimony about the new state-imposed Residential Overlay District areas
particularly residents of Oak Avenue who were protesting a 7-story multi-family development slated for Sepulveda
which total a little over a third of an acre located at 400 Manhattan Beach Boulevard
would have qualified for a residential project.
“We heard a lot today about density bonus projects,” she said
“Residential is a use that’s allowed in the commercial [zoning] downtown
so there was potentially an opportunity there for a density bonus project.”
Mayor Amy Howorth amplified that point.
or seven story apartment building from going in,” she said.
Mirzakanian said that the City will conduct an extensive community engagement process to gather input on potential uses for the site
“This is also a sound financial investment,” she said
“Similar properties in the area have appreciated nearly 13 times their original purchase price over approximately 30 years
the site offers opportunities for revenue generation that could benefit our city for generations to come
lauded the acquisition but also urged that the resident input process for its future use be extensive.
“I’m thrilled that we are purchasing this property,” he said
gives value to the community and our return on investment is just going to be spot on
especially if it’s going to generate some revenue. And [we] have plenty of opportunities to talk about this with the community
I do want to make that voice loud — that we are going to open this up
and put out the notification way in advance of the meetings to make sure that we hear the voices of the community of what they would like to see here.”
said a parking lot would be a misuse of the property.
“It is a legacy property downtown,” he said
My biggest thing is what are we going to do with it
A parking lot would be the worst thing you can do to those residents.”
The purchase was made using part of the existing
unreserved $32 million balance in the City’s General Fund
the council will consider the issuance of general obligation bonds to repay the General Fund.
Mayor Pro Tem David Lesser said he originally opposed the acquisition simply because the City is already backlogged on Capital Improvement Projects and he didn’t want to spend the money
But he became convinced when he considered what might happen to the property if the City did not buy it.
“To the extent all of us are committed to preserving our small town character
we have lost control of much of the entitlement of our property in our city,” he said
“As was mentioned in passing by the city manager
a much larger multi-tenant residential bonus density project could be built on this lot
How would that impact the character of our downtown
We cannot purchase all of the properties in our downtown
and we can involve the public in the decision making as to how it’s used.”
Howorth recalled that one of former councilperson Steve Napolitano’s biggest regrets was that the City didn’t purchase the site of the former Good Stuff restaurant downtown when it had the chance.
But I wanted to give Steve some credit for empowering us
and I think he had his eye on this property
but his leadership has definitely gotten us here
along with [former councilperson] Richard Montgomery
who will definitely text me if I don’t mention him.”
The council voted unanimously to purchase the property

Parking citations will increase from $53 to $59
and monthly commercial parking permits will cost $45 or $250 for a six-month pass
especially amongst business owners and employees
"My biggest concern is the parking permit," Councilmember Nina Tarnay said during the meeting
"We should really make an effort to make sure there are spaces available for the employees."
Tarnay said business owners often complain that their employees have to move their cars multiple times a day or risk getting ticketed
parking permits are futile as structures are usually full by the time employees arrive at work
saying the city has a "real problem with oversubscription," and that it doesn't make sense to charge a high monthly permit fee for a 50% chance at getting a spot
"It doesn't seem right to me," Howorth said
the council decided to set parking citations at $4 lower than what was recommended and voted to raise permit fees from $27 to $45
The increase was lless than the city staff recommended $65 fee
the new prices are expected to bring in upwards of roughly $3 million in additional annual revenue to help the city support parking needs brought on by increased demands in parking
aging infrastructure and outdated parking meter tech
"We do recommend we'll be reevaluating these fees on a more consistent basis," Libby Bretthauer
"I think we can all agree that smaller incremental increases are a lot easier to incur rather than the large increases every 10 years."
Bretthauer said the city is currently conducting a study that will take into consideration variable rates across the city depending on location
and different seasons — possibly changing rates again in the future
The findings of the study will be presented to the city council sometime in mid-summer
