(WPBN/WGTU)— The Manistee City Police Department is reminding residents of the importance of locking their car doors especially as warmer weather brings increased foot traffic This reminder follows two recent reports of vehicle thefts The most recent incident occurred Monday night when a vehicle was stolen from the parking lot at Duffy Park during a soccer event Police emphasized that keys and valuables should not be left inside vehicles They also urged residents to report any suspicious behavior immediately (WPBN/WGTU) -- A former Manistee school teacher was arraigned Wednesday on charges of child abuse Emily Tomaszewski is accused of assaulting a student All we know is what the Manistee County Sheriff's Office has shared We know detectives started investigating in early January when a child told their parents they were assaulted by their teacher 34-year-old Tomaszewski appeared with her attorney Tomaszewski was arraigned on fourth-degree child abuse charges The judge shared that the allegations listed in the complaint against Tomaszewski spanned several months: From September 25 to December 9 “This charge alleges more specifically that you did knowingly or intentionally commit the following act or acts that posed an unreasonable risk of harm or physical injury to a child by using physical assaultive discipline beyond that which is reasonable or permitted by law,” 86th District Court Judge Jared Henry said they have video of at least one incident where Tomaszewski is accused of assaulting her student “She's lived in Manistee for eight years and she has no criminal record,” Tomaszewski’ attorney said “She poses no threat whatsoever to the public.” I think saying that she's no danger to the public that's a little bit of a stretch,” the prosecuting attorney said A few blocks from the courthouse is Jefferson Elementary School where Tomaszewski taught Tomaszewski was first placed on administrative leave during the investigation Manistee Area Public Schools Superintendent Ron Stoneman said the safety and wellbeing of our students." the superintendent encouraged families to come forward if they have any information Tomaszewski could face up to one year in jail or probation for five years Follow reporter Alli Baxter on Facebook
