Two families, both alike in dignity and each with plenty of suppressed damage, meet in a crumbling Altadena mansion for the reading of Oscar-winner-turned-recluse Vivian Yin’s will in Christina Li’s adult fiction debut, “The Manor of Dreams.” On one side of the table are Vivian’s daughters, Lucille and Rennie, as well as Lucille’s only child, Madeline. On the other side are Elaine Deng, a single mother, and her daughter Nora. Completing the opening tableau is Reid Lyman, Vivian’s attorney. It’s not entirely clear why the families are meeting in Yin Manor, Vivian’s dilapidated mansion, as opposed to in the attorney’s office, but as this is a gothic haunted house novel, the venue, if a tad contrived, is crucial. Books Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s ‘Silver Nitrate’ continues her tradition of overturning genres — this time in the chilling story of film horror fanatics in Mexico City. When Lucille gets a preliminary toxicology report from her mother’s autopsy, she learns that the results are “inconclusive,” and becomes convinced that Elaine must have poisoned Vivian, and sets out to use her week in the house to prove it. That these two women have bad blood between them is obvious, but readers are, at this point, as in the dark as daughters Nora and Madeline. L.A. author Lisa See explains how her historical novel about a doctor, ‘Lady Tan’s Circle of Women,’ was inspired by an antique bed in her family store. The book falls short in its attempt to tie Yin Manor’s haunted nature to the exploitation of the thousands of Chinese migrants who built the Western half of the first transcontinental railroad, however. It’s an evocative through line, to be sure, but it’s given short shrift, and doesn’t end up having the emotional or political impact that it might have. On the whole, though, “The Manor of Dreams” is a swift and enjoyable read, increasingly spooky, with a surprising queer romance twining its way through. what they are we’ll attempt to uncover in the days and weeks ahead the power play — a primarily reason for their loss to the Oilers last season — was remarkedly better this time around – Clarke & young players step up — The Mayor | Team MM (@mayorNHL) May 2, 2025 While the notes highlighted in the above tweet are true there remains plenty more to discuss at a later date that’s likely not enough to get a coach fired He is universally considered one of the NHL’s better bench bosses and major gaffes in Boston were not enough to initially get him dismissed nor to diminish his reputation Barry Trotz had many playoff failures before finally winning a Stanley Cup Another case in point would be Peter DeBoer Why does a guy like that get repeated chances The answer is partially that good coaches can be hard to find at the top level there should at least be reasonable consideration to the fact that much of what he did was positive One thing we’d hope Hiller would not repeat in the future is playing his veterans so many minutes That game plan didn’t appear to work well and we’ll assume it’s something he’s going to review at length over the summer Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty are future Hall of Fame players Their numbers will be in the rafters of Crypto.com Arena at some point They also should not be leading the team in minutes played The long talked about transition to the next generation is here and should be now there is still a lot of inexperience on this team LA entered the playoffs with more than a handful of players who lacked postseason action For every hardened veteran there was somebody who came with question marks Andrei Kuzmenko had never played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs Alex Laferriere had five games of playoff experience it’s an important factor when looking back at the reasons behind Blake adding guys like Warren Foegele and Joel Edmundson last summer And the other key piece acquired at that time was Tanner Jeannot It had even been said that one of the main reasons they traded for the 27-year-old forward was for Game 83 That alone will be one of the many (many!) ‘what ifs’ that could be debated over the off-season We would expect the Kings to explore adding a few more experienced players to their lineup this summer — not to take minutes away from young players but rather to surround them with additional support There needs to be a greater emphasis on letting those young players shine They’ve proven (albeit in smaller sample sizes) that they’re up for the challenge Quinton Byfield made a costly mistake late in a game That doesn’t take away from the growth he’s shown this season He’s blossomed into a well-earned larger role on the team Although Clarke had an up and down regular season according to some he’s better today than he was 12 months ago because of the experience gained Byfield has taken noticeable steps each of the past three seasons We expect Clarke to show similar — if not greater — levels of improvement next season The Kings will have roster openings this summer and money to spend We’re still of the belief that Vladislav Gavrikov will sign a contract extension (details forecasted here) Jeannot will be an unrestricted free agent Erik Portillo is assumed to be taking over as the No His Reign teammate Andre Lee will be given an opportunity to earn a full-time NHL job during training camp he’s a restricted free agent on July 1 When all of the above transactions are completed, the Kings should have around $10-15M more to spend (due to a combination of the salary cap increasing, retention money coming off the books, etc. — again, we did a deeper dive on the numbers here) Hopefully, they can use some of their extra cap space to add a player with the elusive intangible; that grit or it factor. They need at least one Matt Greene, Mike Richards, or Jarret Stoll type guy heading into next season. We wrote about it several years ago the Kings won’t just be ‘running it back’ next season They’ll be adding to a group that finished as one of the best in the league over the final few months of the season… and produced 105 points… and earned valuable playoff experience for some of their young core If they learn from their mistakes of the 2025 playoffs the future looks a lot brighter than it did at all from this awful finish was that Blake HAD to finally get fired being perhaps the single largest reason for the quick exit between his mind-boggling and series changing to his repeatedly failing attempts to lock down leads with prevent defense (which we have seen fail at a ridiculously high rate the last 20 years) demonstrating repeated and massive asset mismanagement and somehow getting credit for course correcting Would I rather have a a 25 year old Vilardi right now than a 34 year old Kuemper I don’t know one single Kings fan whose love for the Kings hasn’t wavered over these last years–not because it’s tough to root for a losing team but because the organization doesn’t seem to care remotely about winning Bringing back proven losers like Blake and Hiller who will make more mistakes foster a culture of falling apart and actively stand in the way of winning cups next year 5 years from now or a decade from now is more of the same Blake inherited a rebuilding team with a TON of draft capital spence and laffy (only 2 of them are every day players and only 1 is a game changer and he’d better be at #2 overall) Almost every trade has been completely one sided PLD being the most obvious but let’s not forget the horrible Cal Peterson signing and subsequent trade of assets to rid his contract A 2nd and 4th for a 4th line player with 1 year left on his deal (Jeannot) A 2nd for lias andersson who never amounted to anything Between the terrible drafts and trades it is absolutely mind boggling that Blake would get a new contract They are not built to compete with teams like Florida They can’t beat an Edmonton team with literally 1 good line and a lineup of all offensive defensemen The only positive of losing in the first round for 4 years in a row was that Blake would be gone in the never ending acceptance of mediocrity If this team had ownership and upper management that truly cared The Kings are a sad excuse for a hockey franchise What about the other younger players eg Thomas He may not be the best but his record is great I don’t think Lee makes the NHL roster next season Smith and Lee didn’t impress in his King games Lewis wouldn’t have touched the ice in the last part of the season Having to run Kopi and Doughty out there again is going to be tough both all time King greats but time to give up the thrones Byfield… not a lot of hockey sense but a ton of talent Not sure if he ever takes over the first line I’d like to see Turcotte get serious minutes outside of the fourth line They all know it won’t be long until Greentree takes one of their jobs in the next season or two Maybe Zoeller and a decent free agent also joins the team in 25/26 and/or 26/27 Rob Blake has had 8 years to win a playoff series and simply can’t do it Keeping him is the absolute stupidest idea in the history of hockey so OF COURSE the Kings will bring him back This is a team that has stopped trying to win Stanley Cups and is simply satisfied with decent attendance A regular season 105 point record is meaningless Do you think they hang up banners for that You play the regular season in order to make the playoffs He didn’t come in with a proven playoff track record He did not allocate time on ice effectively He did not adjust mid series when his rivals did And why trust Hiller automatically going into this season We’re not even certain they interviewed other coaches before they gave it to Hiller Blake kept handing out pricey multi year extensions to coaches and here we are Prime example of what can be done in ten years Rob Blake was gifted this job and didn’t match even a fraction of what the Golden Knights pulled off I’ve been a fan of this organization for 25+ years introduced all three of my children to the team and the sport I left the cesspool called Los Angeles and am in South Carolina i stayed up late and saw about 70 games including all the playoff games i kept the billing for my TV service in LA so as to keep access to FSW You are entitled to a different opinion of course I can’t justify supporting the team anymore My question to John Hoven is do you have a counterpart in Florida and Carolina I will be switching my allegiance locally They need big time playoff performers when it matters Hiller has only been here one full year but to have leads that late in several games & they not able to put a team away is seriously concerning aside from the two old heads: Kopitar & Doughty (big contracts and hard to trade any way) everyone is tradable Even with the additions we made this team is 10-ply Kopitar as captain has been a complete failure no playoff series wins since his promotion Drew was on the ice for 17 of Edmonton’s 27 goals this series and finished with a team worst -7 there’s a ton of blame to go around but no one should be under any illusions that they are top line players at this point of their careers He lost his composure in the playoffs and has no accountability for his actions You guys let your personal feelings get in the way of making sound decisions for the success of the team Even a partial retain would free up like 8-9 mill on the cap If all we get is a rerun of this season fans should run for hills it does make sense…Hiller couldn’t expect 14 players to take on 20 for six grueling games Totally on the players letting EDM back into games when leading but Hiller broke their back with his challenge They never recovered after that…it crushed their spirit All the other positives you mentioned may be true but coaching cost the Kings a 2nd round advance The kings defense could not keep a relic like perry out of their goalies crease I’m checking out until this entire regime changes—president like many other fans on this site have spent serious hard-earned dollars to watch the Kings the last 4 years have been really hard to take I have no personal animus against Luc or Blake but there’s such a thing as accountability They have won nothing in 8 years and we keep paying financially and emotionally to watch the same result over and over again It’s going to be really hard to accept any form of “we got better we’re running it back – now give us another 20K so you can watch the same thing next year.” You can argue that they mismanaged what was considered the best young talent pool in hockey but to their credit they did end up putting a very good team together that did have an outside shot who have given everything and deserved better by sticking them with an arrogant rookie coach A coach who put way too many miles on aging horses throughout the season so he can give the 7th D-man 2 minutes of ice-time in a game A coach who had all season to build a 4th line he trusted but would often bench players mid-season for the smallest of mistakes A coach who ultimately didn’t trust his team he would have never challenged a goal that every fan and every analyst watching knew had a slim-to-none chance of being overturned So instead of giving his team a chance in OT They came back as much as they could in game 6 because they’re elite athletes and have pride the 4th line finally got a chance to play and proved to be effective the minute a coach like Montgomery became available they did the right thing for the team and jumped Look how much better the Leafs are now that they finally have a real coach Blake and Luc will most likely keep Hiller who’s under contract and in so doing betray the fans yet again and take away any chance Kopi or Drew have for one more deep playoff run before Father Time finally catches them How many upcoming UFAs in the next few years are going to want to stay here and continue to play for a team that can’t get out of the first round I feel more than ever that what happens this off-season is going to dictate the Kings’ future for years to come It’s entirely possible that the team we had this year will be the best for years to come I hope ownership is watching and cares enough to make the right moves It’s been 8 years of futility and no plan for improvement Blake tries to full holes and creates new ones that can’t be fixed during the season because we are always up against the cap our new talent doesn’t have the support it needs and our head coach (5th in 8 years) is not ready to take a team into the playoffs Blake keeps doing the same thing over and over again expecting better results despite getting the same results each time and develop a new 5 year Dean Lombardi plan Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" With the days winding down on his 40+ year career in the direction of English teacher Scott Hertzog a miserable old man living a hollow life in a small community along the Susquehanna River When his inner demons take a monstrous physical form and threaten not just him Dean must confront both the monsters — and himself — if he has any hope of saving his home Robert has been passionate about writing since childhood often writing far beyond his grade school assignments because he loved storytelling.  “After writing my first short story for a contest when I was around 12 or 13 “But it wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school when a theatre teacher in Florida encouraged me to write a play that won at a thespian festival that I realized I couldn’t survive without writing.” Seeing his first novel in print is “pretty incredible,” he said Susquehannock was inspired by I Am Legend by Richard Matheson “Waits was the inspiration for the main character’s design and voice to the extent that it even played a role in the plot.”  “I remember going for the first time and wondering what kind of person could live there — and decided to tell that story.” The book cover art was designed by Robert’s father based on one of the characters in the book who oversaw Robert’s independent study project “Robert’s ability to craft a story filled with atmosphere and he should be incredibly proud of what he has accomplished.” The project took the entire school year to complete who has helped five other Penn Manor students publish novels over the years Susquehannock is now available through Lulu.com. Dr There will also be a reduction in bus stops and the start and end time at the high school will be 30 minutes earlier I think it was somewhere around $250,000 year-over-year in the reduction in transportation costs." Dr Sormani says Manor ISD is in a better position than most districts "You hit a balanced budget; it's a huge milestone," Dr "There are districts all around the state who would kill to say we have drafted a balanced budget." He promises it's all for student success and I think it is a positive step to put us on the right strong foundation to build upon what our kids are already accomplishing," Dr To celebrate the city builder's first anniversary Slavic Magic outlines the major Manor Lords updates it has coming in the near future Follow us for daily PC games news, guides and reviews on X, Facebook, Google News, and Steam.
