Michael Manville, professor and chair of Luskin urban planning, commented in a Bloomberg CityLab Perspective on service cuts that could be coming to regional transit systems nationwide
While focused on Pittsburgh’s transit system
which is considering reductions in service
are weighing service cuts due to growing deficits caused by increased costs
passenger counts below pre-pandemic levels
creating longer wait times for other routes
limiting running times as well as disconnecting a number of suburban townships from the network
Experts caution that severe service reductions could have effects that will last for years to come such as forcing low-income riders to purchase cars
straining budgets and contributing to regional congestion and pollution
you’re not coming back to the train or bus
even if service is restored,” Manville said

Ragan’s Council Career Conversations, a recurring video series from Ragan’s Communications Leadership Council
allows members to share the strategies that made them leaders and the lessons they’ve learned about their careers
Eric Brown, director of corporate communications at Johns Manville
told Ragan that communications leaders should build their skills much like architects build houses
“Your basic building blocks include writing
“You glue those together with some creativity and collaboration
and you can basically build up to any industry you’re communicating in
That’s what’s helped me over the last 30 years.”
He also added some advice for leaders seeking to overcome challenges in their journeys
Brown pointed to an example of leaders trying to lead both in-person and hybrid teams
direct and genuine — there’s not a whole lot you can’t overcome,” he said

Lesley Manville, Aidan Turner and Monica Barbaro are set to star in a major revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the National Theatre
This marks the first time the celebrated adaptation by Christopher Hampton has been staged at the National
and the first return to the venue for Elliott in nearly a decade
Elliott, whose past National Theatre credits include Angels in America, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and co-direction of War Horse
brings the intrigue of pre-revolutionary France to the stage in a production that promises sharp wit
The play was originally adapted by Christopher Hampton in 1985 and has since become a staple of modern theatre
The casting of Manville, a BAFTA and Olivier Award-winner, alongside Turner (Poldark, The Lieutenant of Inishmore) and Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) signals a high-profile ensemble for this anticipated revival. Manville returns to the London stage fresh from her acclaimed, Olivier Award-winning performance in Oedipus at Wyndham’s Theatre earlier this year — a production now set to transfer to Broadway
The show is one of 16 new productions unveiled today in Indhu Rubasingham’s first season as Artistic Director of the National Theatre in London
Further casting and creative team details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks
ticket booking information are yet to be confirmed
Audiences can expect a dramatic return to the National for one of literature’s most enduring tales of manipulation and betrayal

Professor and chair of UCLA Luskin Urban Planning Michael Manville commented in a Smart Cities Dive brief on California Gov
Gavin Newsom’s proposal to shift 200 million daily passenger miles off the state’s highways and onto a zero-emission passenger rail system by 2050
estimated to cost $310 billion — involving local
state and federal funds — also would incorporate intercity
regional and local transit systems to the high-speed network
Aimed at reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions
the project would also improve safety for travelers in the state
“Shifting 200 million passenger miles off the roads is a big shift,” Manville said
“pulling vehicles off the road doesn’t prevent other vehicles from taking their place.” Manville also observed that in 20 years
money spent on rail has not seen strong results
“so I think it’s natural to look at big ambitious goals like this with some caution.”

A-list actor Lesley Manville brings style and substance to amateur sleuthing in the Moonflower Murders
the second in the series of Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling books
Manville shares insights about her character Susan Ryeland
The interactions between your Moonflower Murders character
Tim [McMullan] and I have to think about it as a real relationship because ultimately
that’s what the audience member sees—two people communicating—even though obviously
he is absolutely a figment of her imagination
And you have to bear in mind that she knows this character very
very well through all of the Alan Conway books that she’s published and edited and scrutinized
Pünd has become the character that she really gravitates towards and really likes
They have a great thing that’s good for any couple
whether romantic or platonic: They have humor together
And she has such respect for his investigative skills
spending a lot of time urging her to push forward with her own investigating skills
There’s mutual respect and admiration between them
With the understanding that there’s no better role than that of Susan Ryeland, is there any part of you that wishes that you had been able to play two characters in the two different time periods, as did much of the Moonflower Murders cast
I was quite jealous of that because there’s not much on television where an actor hears
“Can you come and do this fantastic series”—written by Anthony Horowitz
no less—”and you’ll get to play two characters?” I mean
It’s like doing two jobs rolled into one
But then I’ve got so many rich pickings with playing Susan in that he’s written such a multifaceted
So I’ve got absolutely no complaints
But I know those other actors were thrilled and couldn’t believe their luck that they got to play two characters
the two different versions of those characters
It just shows what a kind of wonderful chameleon bunch they are
because it really is a pretty impressive cast of talent
demonstrated in the fact that they play these two characters that are so different and with such ease
We stayed at a very lovely hotel on the beach
It was this little hotel with individual rooms and chalets
and right on the sea—the crew were jumping into the water every lunchtime
because I had costume and hair and makeup and everything
But they were all just putting on their swimsuits and spending their lunch breaks in the water
I did get stung quite badly when we were filming in Crete
and I had to be taken to hospital to get it looked at because I really did react very badly
I think it was a bee—there were lots of beehives up in the mountains
But one of them got up my trouser leg and gave me a nasty sting
so I had to have a few injections and things like that
When Susan returns to England in Moonflower Murders
it’s exciting to see her back in her chic leather jacket
How do her different Greece and England styles relate to her character
I think the England style is symbolic to her of her old life and the old Susan
She’s gone to Greece full of optimism about the relationship and the hotel they’re going to run
But it’s almost as though she’s trying to fit into a world that really she’s not organically comfortable in
and you wake up to this beautiful glistening sea every day and the sun is shining and you can eat amazing Greek food
But you can’t put those on a sticking plaster over your life and just say
and there are people who pay lots of money to go on holiday and have two weeks off every year
aren’t I lucky I can have that 365 days of the year now?” Of course
and it isn’t ultimately what makes her tick
There’s a really lovely moment when she does go back to the UK and she gets her car out of the garage
and it’s just the noise of that lovely MG engine—it’s thrilling to her because it represents everything that is the meat and bones of Susan
even though she’s not back there strictly speaking
to do her job; she’s back there to investigate a murder that somebody thinks is partly to do with the book that she published
So she’s back there for a whole set of complex and rather uncomfortable and slightly scary reasons
but she can put her leather jacket on and a bit of red lipstick
and she doesn’t have to wear the kind of loose dresses that she wears in Greece to keep cool
She can actually be the cutting edge Susan that she is
We created her as a woman who unashamedly enjoys her wardrobe…And I love the fact that a woman can be brilliant and intelligent and vibrant and thoughtful and provoke all kinds of conversation
and also be very interested in her own personal style
which can often be seen as something that’s quite slight in a person
Isn’t it a bit fickle just to be interested in your clothes
and I don’t think it diminishes anything about my personal integrity or intelligence
And I think Susan feels exactly the same way
Are there any similarities between an actor and an amateur sleuth
I suppose only that when I get given a part to play
I have to fill in so many gaps and create history that sometimes might not be there
But as to whether I feel an actor is a bit like a sleuth
I think I’d have been quite a good detective
but not because of my acting skills—just because of my nosiness and my understanding of what makes men tick

A $55,000 out-of-court settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by a former Manville Police Department employee who alleged that a lieutenant pointed a loaded weapon at her and laughed
In the settlement, reached this summer after mediation and first reported by Transparencynj.com
employed in an administrative capacity in the department
Paul Meixner of aggravated assault by pointing what she believed was a loaded shotgun at her in February 2022
The woman had also filed suit against Police Chief Thomas Herbst alleging sexual harassment and sexual assault
However that lawsuit has been dismissed without prejudice pending the outcome of Herbst's criminal trial early next year on an eight-count indictment returned by a state grand jury in June 2023 on charges of engaging in sexually inappropriate, criminal acts with multiple women against their will for years
Herbst has also filed a defamation suit against the woman
That suit has also been dismissed without prejudice until the criminal matter has been resolved
More: Opinion: Manville's resilience is powerful. It's a microcosm of the American dream
the woman will receive $33,213.92 while her lawyers
According to the lawsuit filed in Somerset County Superior Court
the woman was in Meixner's office when a sergeant walked in with a shotgun
pointed the shotgun directly at the woman and said
"she had asked him to do some work which she was not able to do."
then laughed about pointing the shotgun at her
"He seemed to relish in the demonstration of power over an unarmed and helpless female and frightening her with a loaded weapon," the lawsuit charged
The woman was "shocked" and "very shaken" by the lieutenant's conduct and went home and cried
The woman feared retaliation if she reported the incident to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office and feared Meixner and the chief then would make her working conditions "intolerable."
A state appellate court has upheld the conviction of a Somerset County man for punching a dog in Manville and his 180-day sentence in the county jail
was found guilty of animal cruelty in May 2023 by a Superior Court jury in connection with a May 2020 incident in Manville
But the court overturned part of the sentence handed down by Superior Court Judge Jonathan Romankow that placed various conditions on Hartobey's Parole Supervision for Life that he had been given in 2010 for an aggravated sexual assault charge on a 5-year-old girl in Edison in 2006
a Manville woman was sitting in her living room at about 10 p.m
2020 when she heard "a loud thud" against her house followed by another thud 10 seconds later
kicking at what she first thought was a bookbag until she heard whimpering and realized it was her dog
After she yelled at Hartobey "to get the hell off that dog," he responded that she should get "her fat … back in the house," according to trial testimony
More: Hunterdon County man shoots and kills dog, charged with animal cruelty: prosecutor
She then went back inside the house and called 911
came to the house and saw Hartobey striking the dog "with a closed fist" on top of the head
They also saw Hartobey pulling on the dog's leash "to force the dog to raise her head," according to trial testimony
The officers saw Hartobey strike the dog twice but stopped him as he was trying a third time
The officers described Hartobey as intoxicated
staggering and having alcohol on his breath
shaking and cowering with flesh blood on top of her head
They brought Nessa to police headquarters where
lured her with treats and took her to the shelter
Nessa yelped as if she was in pain when the animal control officer picked her up
Hartobey was found guilty of fourth-degree animal cruelty
arguing that the judge did not define the cruelty charge for the jury
through the judge followed the model jury charge for the offense
The appellate court rejected that argument
Hartobey also argued there was "insufficient" evidence for a conviction
The appellate court also rejected that argument
saying "a reasonable jury could have found (Hartobey) guilty of animal cruelty" after hearing the testimony
Romankow placed three conditions on Hartobey's Parole for Life conditions – a prohibition on contact with Nessa
a prohibition on owning other animals in the future
Hartobey argued that those conditions had no basis in law and were unrelated to a crime committed more than a decade previously
He contended that a judge may not impose parole conditions because it is a power reserved to the state Parole Board
The appellate court agreed that the judge did not have the authority to set parole conditions
Hartobey was convicted before a new law was passed in 2023 allowing a judge to ban a person found guilty of animal cruelty from having a pet

MANVILLE — A jury convicted a police chief of several counts of official misconduct related to years-long sexual harassment of subordinates
Manville police chief Thomas Herbst was charged in 2023 of "abhorrent" sexual abuse that went on for over a decade
according to Attorney General Matt Platkin
The jury found Herbst guilty on four counts of official misconduct
one count of pattern of official misconduct and one count of sexual assault
He was also found guilty of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact
The person who was Herbst's "primary victim" was sexually assaulted over 13 years
Some of the attacks happened while they were on duty and occasionally within police headquarters
The jury also convicted the chief of seeking sexual favor from the wife of someone in the department in exchange for "favorable employment decisions" including a promotion
He asked another officer's wife for explicit phone calls to get him a schedule change
Herbst was also found guilty of viewing pornographic websites on his borough computer in his office
The chief was also found guilty of violating department policy by keeping his badge after his suspension and flashing it during a traffic stop
He identified himself as the chief during the stop
Today’s conviction shows no one is above the law
in New Jersey my office will continue to hold corrupt officials to account," Platkin said in a statement
"We will continue to protect victims and serve the public
I want to thank the career prosecutors and law enforcement in my Office of Public Integrity and Accountability who expertly prosecuted this case."
Herbst was named chief in 2019, according to Manville PBA #236. Payroll records show he has been in the Police and Firemen's Retirement System since Jan

Robert Icke's modern adaptation of the Sophoclean tragedy is 'riveting' from start to finish
I already knew how this most shocking of tragedies would end
yet I "found myself not only wishing but almost believing that things might turn out differently"
which brilliantly restates the "power of Greek tragedy to lay bare all the grief of the human soul"
Yet Icke has done an "astonishing job in both departments
An old play is masterfully analysed and made newly devastating."

A modern audience could find this ancient story – with its prophecies
hubris and climactic revelation – far-fetched
"The liberal use of ironic foreshadowing in the dialogue – references to mothers
knowledge and the like abound – came across as more of a knowing comic device than a horrifying tragic one"
and there is a flabbiness to some of the dialogue
Strong and Manville are "desperately moving in the extraordinary final scenes
which play out as the most unbearable of love stories"
