We really don’t need anymore fast food eating joints
What we need are some clean industries that will bring in a younger workforce and entice families to relocate

The finance director for the city of Marble Falls has accepted another position as he leaves the municipality with confidence about its financial health and foundation for growth
Jeff Lazenby has worked for the city for nearly four years
He recently submitted his resignation to become the finance director for the city of Blacksburg
the Finance Department has evolved into a wellrun operation
We have built a cohesive team with a mission-driven focus on customer service,” Lazenby told The Highlander
“I am truly thankful for the department’s hard work
and responsiveness to the changes that have been enacted in making the de- partment more efficient and effective.”
Lazenby explained that he’s most proud of his efforts in streamlining the budget process
and I was able to help implement a more automated system and process for our budget planning and using modern budget planning software
so it’s helped reduce time spent on budget planning by at least 50% - 50% of the finance director’s time,” he
Some of the biggest challenges the city has surmounted include keeping pace with growth
It doesn’t appear to be slowing down,” he said
“One aspect that I liked about working for the city is that it is able to approach growth from a strategic perspective
being proactive in terms of handling the growth versus being reactive
Lazenby expressed confidence about the leadership which will steward the direction of the city
“It’s headed on the right path in terms of managing the growth
being strategic about the growth,” he said
They’re really focused on running the city efficiently
effectively with the taxpayers in mind and being mindful of spending taxpayers’ dollars.”
“The city management have really exhibited and shown what it is to efficiently run an expanding municipality
Lazenby says his decision turned out to be the right move at the right time
Everything runs efficiently and smoothly,” he said
They’ve all been a pleasure to work with.”
Lazenby has a master’s in public administration with an emphasis in public financial management
he served as the finance director for the City of Blaine
His past experience includes a job ad administrative services manager for the Whatcom County Library District in Washington State for three years
LakeFest takes place every June on Lake Marble Falls
The Southern Drag Boat Association has canceled the 2025 LakeFest races following a change in SDBA ownership
citing time constraints in making sure the popular Marble Falls event went off without a hitch
The association promises a return to action on Lake Marble Falls in 2026
“It’s all new ownership, so we’re starting fresh,” SDBA Promotions Director Robin Reed told DailyTrib.com
a sister publication of 101HighlandLakes.com
“(LakeFest) is the biggest attended race (in the SDBA season) and has a lot of logistics
We just didn’t have time to do it justice and do the planning.”
in partnership with the Marble Falls/Highland Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce
is committed to bringing the event back in 2026
“We didn’t want to use LakeFest as a learning curve,” Reed said
“We’re already in conversations for 2026.”
LakeFest competitors hit the water at thundering speeds upwards of 200 mph while fans watch from Lakeside Park
A free show-and-shine at nearby Johnson Park is typically the Friday before the Saturday and Sunday action and features boats on display

View important chapters in Marble Falls’ story at the new Black History Museum
another key figure in the lives of African Americans in the Highland Lakes
The Black History Museum has been under construction for years on the grounds of the 132-year-old church
A grand opening ceremony is from noon to 3 p.m
Exhibits feature important people in Black history across the country as well as Highland Lakes residents who have had impactful careers and lives
The museum is a lesson on the past for present and future generations
“I want the students who are here today and will be here in the future to see the people who were here before them and know that they were part of this community,” she told The Picayune Magazine, a sister publication of 101HighlandLakes.com
“I want them to grow up to learn not to settle for nothing
I want them to see the positive that can come out of life if you apply yourself.”
One of the exhibits showcasing that tenacity is on Edward Abney
a 1981 Marble Falls High School graduate who is now a medical technician for LENSAR in Altamonte Springs
He builds robotic laser systems that cut the operating time for cataract surgery down from hours to minutes
“I think this is a great thing Marble Falls is doing,” he told The Picayune Magazine
“I want the young African-Americans there to get a good feel for their school
and know the people who came before them and contributed and paved the way for them.”

Crews began demolishing the Thai Niyom restaurant building
26 to clear the way for a right-of-way upgrade at the intersection of RM 1431
Texas Department of Transportation contractors prepped to clear a fueling station structure and a restaurant Feb
27 as a three-building demolition project unfolded the week of Feb
An intersection in the heart of Marble Falls morphed into a cleared lot as crews demolished several structures for upcoming work aimed at making the thoroughfare safer
as commuters noticed fences installed around the targeted buildings
which included a former restaurant and pawn shop
“TxDOT partially acquired right-of-way on four properties at the southeast corner of the U.S
281 and RM 1431 intersection,” Spokeswoman Kellen Mohrmann said
“TxDOT has a safety and mobility project to add a right-turn lane for northbound traffic
and make signal improvements at the intersection.”
the intersection which is currently more of an ‘X’ design will be reconfigured into more of a right angle
The estimated cost of the project is $11.3 million
Mohrmann said the state project is funded through the Unified Transportation Program (UTP) Category 2 – Metropolitan and Urban Area Corridors
The state reportedly acquired right-of-way and offered buyouts to property owners
six blocks south of their now-demolished building
Thai Niyom restaurant closed its business with word pending on whether it would move to another location
For now the fueling station remains until mitigation efforts trigger its demolition
The work comes on the heels of clearing of the northeast corner after properties there were purchased by the Marble Falls Economic Development Corporation
In 2023 and 2024 board members secured removal of unoccupied buildings located at 1001
281 and RM 1431 opposite of the newly-demolished site
The EDC property buildings were previously occupied by an eatery which relocated and a bait shop which closed permanently
Both projects complimented the process of re-structuring the intersection
TXDoT officials say the intersection project is expected to go out for bids in mid 2026
“The contractor will be selected through a low-bid process,” Mohrmann said
“The construction timeline is not yet determined.”
eventually surrendered about an hour an half later following a tense standoff
An unidentified man was taken to the hospital
following a standoff lasting over an hour near a park in Marble Falls
Police confirmed that Marble Falls police initially attempted a traffic stop on Industrial Boulevard
Authorities soon discovered the male behind the wheel was allegedly armed. “A bondsman contacted one of our police officers and notified them of a wanted fugitive traveling in Marble Falls in a 2010 black Ford F150,” according to Marble Falls Police Capt
“The suspect was a 59 year old white male out of Spicewood
TX and he had a drug related failure to appear warrant out of Llano County
“The suspect would not pull over and a short vehicle pursuit ensued.”
“The vehicle was contained to a small area and it would not have been able to leave. All traffic approaching was diverted,” Cole continued
“There was a park but it was not busy
“The people that were in/around the park were asked to leave and they did without any confrontation,” he added
Police say shortly thereafter the driver became a threat to himself
Assisting agencies included the Department of Public Safety
Burnet County precinct 4 constable and the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office
“Officers were able to get the suspect to surrender peacefully,” Cole stated
The driver was taken to Seton Highland Lakes to be treated for non-life threatening issues
“He will also be charged with evading in a vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon,” Cole stated
