There are no reports of injury. The campus briefly went into lockdown.
Law enforcement sources reported that the student was a 13-year-old boy and that the gun went off accidentally, possibly from inside a backpack, between 8 and 8:30 am.
A Los Angeles Unified message to parents did not specify the age or gender of the student or the precise time of the incident:
“Today, a student allegedly discharged a possible firearm inside of a classroom and thereafter fled the campus,” according to a message that went out at 10:40 a.m. “No students or staff were injured. The campus has been swept by law enforcement and the lockdown has been lifted.”
In the message, officials said they “took immediate action, including notifying the Los Angeles School Police Department and Region West Operations for further investigation.”
The parents of the “impacted students” have been notified, according to the district message.
As is typical in such situations, L.A. school police will be providing “on-campus support and extra patrols for the remainder of the week,” the message said.
Counseling services also will be available.
The school also has scheduled a parent meeting on Zoom at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
An earlier message, sent out at 9:11 a.m., alerted parents that “there was a situation on campus that per District Policy resulted in ... going on lockdown. Students and staff are safe. School Police and District are on campus. There is no imminent threat to any student at this time.”
Westside Global Awareness Magnet SPAN school serves grades K through 8 and describes itself as a “small, family-friendly campus, nestled between the Venice Beach shoreline and the Ballona Creek wetlands. ... Westside students utilize the surrounding environments of ocean and wetland to enhance their academic explorations in all classes, including physical education.”

Print A eucalyptus tree in a Marina del Rey park that was home to dozens of soon-to-hatch double-crested cormorant eggs became unstable after strong winds
prompting a rescue mission to remove the eggs earlier this month
A total of 20 nests holding more than 60 unhatched eggs and chicks were found on the failing tree inside Burton Chace Park
The tree’s trunk split as a result of strong winds
causing a large piece to topple near a walkway leading to the park’s parking lot
The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors and the International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles Wildlife Center assembled a crew to move the eggs and chicks to a safer location
Two wildlife biologists assisted in the March 10 rescue operations
A total of 20 nests holding more than 60 unhatched eggs and chicks were found on a failing tree inside Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey
(Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors) The eggs and chicks were sent to a wildlife center in San Pedro and the rest of the tree was cut down
But cormorants have been maligned for the damage they do to the trees they make their home in and the bodies of water where they fish. Cormorants can eat an average of one pound of fish per day, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Cormorants were blamed for an 80% to 90% decline in the prey-fish population of Lake Huron, a Great Lake bordering Michigan and stretching to Canada, according to the Huron Daily Tribune.
Cormorants are also known to kill trees, shrubs and other vegetation due to the accumulation of their guano, or feces — which can be highly acidic. Cormorants also remove foliage for nesting material, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Each parent takes turns incubating the eggs over a monthlong period, according to the Department of Beaches and Harbors. It can take a cormorant five to six weeks to learn how to fly on its own. A cormorant is completely independent at month 10, according to the Sacramento Audubon Society.
“Feeding and caring for hatchlings is a delicate and time-consuming process, and Bird Rescue clinic staff are working into the night each day helping raise these birds,” the department said in a news release. “Many of the rescued chicks may be in care for up to three months.”
International Bird Rescue Chief Executive Officer JD Bergeron said the birds will be released into existing cormorant colonies when they are ready to be on their own again.

A 13-year-old student allegedly discharged a firearm inside a classroom at Westside Global Awareness Magnet in Marina del Rey on Wednesday morning
prompting a brief campus lockdown but no reported injuries
The incident occurred between 8 and 8:30 a.m.
and the gun may have accidentally fired from inside the student’s backpack
law enforcement sources told the *Los Angeles Times*
The student reportedly fled the campus following the discharge
In a message sent to parents around 10:40 a.m.
the Los Angeles Unified School District stated: “Today
a student allegedly discharged a possible firearm inside of a classroom and thereafter fled the campus
The campus has been swept by law enforcement and the lockdown has been lifted.”
District officials confirmed that immediate action was taken
including notifying the Los Angeles School Police Department and Region West Operations for further investigation
The parents of students directly impacted by the incident have been notified
The lockdown was lifted after officers completed a thorough sweep of the campus
the district reminded families: “Students should not bring any dangerous items to school
including items that may resemble or imitate a dangerous object.”

HealthLeaders recently interviewed Jessica “Jess” Almeida, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital
how the hospital supports nurse wellbeing and her perspective on emerging technology trends
that many mentors and leaders guided her and fostered her career growth
“They really influenced my career more than they probably will ever realize,” Almeida said of the nurse managers
directors and chief nursing officers who have exposed her to new opportunities
She told Hatfield the new Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital—expected to open in late 2026—has been a helpful tool in recruiting nurses
The hospital will feature outdoor terraces and calming meditation areas to emphasize work-life balance and wellness
along with state-of-the-art tools and technology to make nurses’ jobs easier
As leadership prepares to move into the new hospital
they’ve encouraged career growth and helped nurses reach their goals
through open communication with staff members about their individual aspirations
“My success may not be somebody else’s success,” Almeida said
Even our nursing assistants may not want to be nurses
what can we do to support them and grow them within their idea of success?”
Growth can include developing new skills and using new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to improve patient care
Nurse leaders can help staff members adopt this new technology and feel comfortable using it
“AI is probably more familiar than people realize,” she said
“It’s [more about] how do we use that and bring that into a facility to benefit our clinicians and our patients.”

Dozens of bird eggs and chicks were rescued from nests in a single wind-damaged eucalyptus tree that was dangerously close to collapsing in a California park
Now staff at the International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles Wildlife Center have been working around the clock to care for the 47 eggs and 12 chicks
in hopes that they will be able to be released back into the wild in a few months
The tree at a park in Marina del Rey was flagged earlier this month after one of its trunks fell and crushed a trash bin enclosure
a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches & Harbors
Its other trunk was showing signs of collapsing as well
“It wasn’t a question of if this tree is going to fail
tree contractors meticulously removed each of the 20 nests and chopped off branches one at a time
Biologists on the ground put the eggs and hatchlings in egg cartons and boxes with heated blankets acting as temporary incubators
Double-crested Cormorants are common in Southern California and tend to nest in large colonies that may crowd a single tree
wildlife center manager for the bird rescue
Taking care of them can be very difficult because when they hatch they are essentially “naked little balls of skin” completely reliant on their parents
the chicks must be fed every hour from 8 a.m
they wear a black suit and disguise their face
while using decoys and puppets to keep the birds from forming an attachment with them
which could make them too trusting of humans in the wild
Rescue staff expect the birds to stay for at least three months and then once they can hunt on their own and fly
with some about 2 weeks old and already eating whole fish
We do our best; we do what we know; we treat what we know," she said
“And we can only hope that they do a good job and they can survive.”
Fisherman’s Village will host a slew of birthday activities
Month-long specials abound in Marina Del Rey
Marina Del Rey is known internationally for its sailing and crystal blue waters
It seems unbelievable that Marina del Rey is only 60 years old
considering the land was a salt marsh for centuries
the Marina del Rey Tourism Board and its partners are planning a birthday celebration
featuring restaurant and activity specials with a community event in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Harbors
Marina del Rey has transformed into a vibrant destination for tourism,” said Janet Zaldua
“Significant investments from local hotels and restaurants have breathed new life into the area
making it a strong competitor to nearby destinations such as Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.”
Marina del Rey attracted more than half a million overnight visitors
supported over 4,100 jobs and generated $617 million in total economic impact
The unincorporated seaside community is home to residents
diners and North America’s largest man-made
Several major developments offer everything from AMC to Warby Parker
Villa Marina Marketplace Mall and the latest to pop up
“Marina del Rey has become a huge part of the dining scene on the Westside
and Boardwalk MDR has played a big role in that growth,” Zaldua said
“It has brought a wonderful variety of dining options
from Latin-inspired vegan dishes at Planta to fresh pasta imported daily from Italy at Uovo
friendly atmosphere really resonates with visitors
Boardwalk MDR is located along the bike path
making it easy for people to stop in for a bite during a bike ride or leisurely stroll.”
Zaldua has served as CEO of the Marina del Rey Tourism Board for three years
her career in tourism and hospitality spans nearly two decades
including roles at the Pasadena Convention and Visitors Bureau
and the Marina del Rey Convention and Visitors Bureau
As the primary person overseeing Marina del Rey’s destination marketing efforts for nearly 12 years
“Some of my favorite places are definitely the waterfront dining spots,” she said
“There’s nothing quite like enjoying a delicious meal while taking in the amazing views
and even catching glimpses of the sea lions bobbing in and out of the water
I also enjoy the many experiences on the water
a yacht or sailing charter or sport fishing
Being on the water is always a relaxing and peaceful experience
Another highlight is the beautiful Marvin Braude bike trail
which stretches 22 miles and offers a scenic ride all the way from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach
I enjoy taking a leisurely walk along the promenade near Mother’s Beach or Burton Chace Park.”
Although Venice and Santa Monica’s beaches are more popular
Mother’s Beach is beloved for its lack of waves
where food trucks park in the lot every Thursday evening in the summer
ADA ramps and enhanced pedestrian accessibility
Month-long specials offered in April include vintage cocktails at Cast & Plow at The Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey and meals at popular local spots like Brizo
Tony P’s and Salt and $60 off a premium dinner cruise for two with City Cruises
guests can enjoy a variety of treats at the community celebration at Fisherman’s Village
including free 45-minute historical harbor tours with Marina WaterBus
celebratory cupcakes for the first 150 attendees on the 12th and an exhibit from the MDR Historical Society featuring photos and stories from the past 60 years
As Marina del Rey continues to develop and grow
the 804-acre area must find a balance between the expanding residential community and the influx of tourists
“The Marina has certainly become a popular destination for travelers
while also a highly desirable residential community,” said Zaldua
with thoughtful development alongside efforts to preserve green spaces
Maintaining this balance is very important
and it is something that the County will continue evaluating as they consider the future development plans for the Marina
Any actions that can help reduce traffic and improve accessibility would certainly be welcomed by both locals and visitors.”

Dozens of double-crested cormorant chicks and eggs were rescued from a wind-damaged tree in Marina del Rey and are now getting around-the-clock care, officials announced Monday.
JD Bergeron, chief executive of the nonprofit, told LAist it’s always a last resort to disturb birds while they’re nesting, but the babies have been doing well.
“Just like geese, they habituate really quickly and easily, so we have to make sure we are not making any human sounds,” he said. “The team actually covers their entire form, feeding at times with puppets ... so that the birds do not grow up associating humans with food.”
Cormorants are colonial nesters, which means they nest together in groups, and a towering eucalyptus tree in Burton Chace Park was a popular destination.
But when a large trunk collapsed and the base became unstable earlier this month, officials realized it needed to be removed.
“ It wasn't a question of if this tree is going to fail, it was a question of when," Nicole Mooradian, public information specialist with the L.A. County Department of Beaches and Harbors, told LAist.
Twenty nests were carefully removed from the tree one-by-one by a pair of wildlife biologists, a tree contractor, the International Bird Rescue and L.A. County Department of Beaches and Harbors officials.
Many of the nests had three or four eggs in them, as well as some newly hatched chicks. About 61 eggs and eight hatchlings were taken to the rescue’s L..A. wildlife center while the rest of the tree was removed.
“This was the best result for a really bad situation,” Mooradian said.

Nguyen Opened Fire at the Pearl Apartments and the Nearby Marina 41 Complex for Hours in April
A group of tenants from Marina del Rey’s Pearl Apartments have filed a lawsuit against Equity Residential and several other parties
alleging gross negligence in failing to prevent a shooting rampage in April
which pinned residents to the floors of their homes
could have been avoided if property management had taken earlier warnings about Victoryloc Nguyen’s erratic behavior seriously
opened fire at the Pearl Apartments and the nearby Marina 41 complex for nearly four hours on the night of April 13
armed with multiple AR-15 rifles and a pistol.
Despite residents’ complaints about Nguyen’s behavior in the months leading up to the shooting
the lawsuit claims that the building’s owners
and their security contractor failed to take appropriate action to remove or monitor him
Nguyen reportedly made alarming comments to fellow tenants
including expressing a desire to be “the Pearl’s drug dealer” and making comments to kill residents and “cook their bodies into tasty food.” Tenants witnessed him brandishing weapons
and exhibiting signs of drug-induced psychosis
leading his former roommate to move out secretly due to fears for their safety
One particularly troubling incident occurred on April 9
when Nguyen was allegedly seen acting aggressively at the Pearl’s pool area in front of multiple tenants
Witnesses reported that Nguyen exposed himself in front of minors
and slashed at nearby trees and a young woman
No immediate action was taken to remove him from the property
The lawsuit further criticizes management’s failure to facilitate a swift police response on the night of the shooting
The complaint details how law enforcement was delayed in entering the building because the complex did not provide key access to officers
allowed Nguyen to continue his shooting spree
further endangering lives and increasing the emotional toll on residents
including plaintiffs Anil and Ulku Alpogunc
describe the harrowing experience of being trapped in their apartment
is now seeking damages for the emotional and psychological trauma suffered during the attack
Many of the plaintiffs have reported post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
The lawsuit further alleges that Equity Residential acted negligently by failing to provide adequate security measures
such as installing security cameras or coordinating with law enforcement to address Nguyen’s increasingly aggressive behavior
The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages
and a failure by management to protect tenants from foreseeable harm
Equity Residential didn’t immediately respond to inquiry from Mirror Media Group
including two counts of attempted murder of officers
one count of attempted murder of a civilian
and several counts of assault with a machine gun

100-foot yacht docked in Marina del Rey that had fireworks and 1,000 rounds of ammunition aboard erupted into a fiery inferno before sinking on Wednesday night
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of the blaze at 2201 Basin A shortly after 8:30pm and thankfully
the two passengers that were onboard escaped with only minor injuries
With Mariners Village and the Courtyard Marriott close by
this was quite the spectacle in the harbor
burning brightly against the black night sky and as such it was captured by many on video and posted to social media
the vessel reportedly had large amounts of both fireworks and ammunition of an unknown caliber stored below deck on the starboard side of the vessel
As first responders worked to contain the blaze
which threatened nearby boats and residential structures
fireworks began exploding from the deck of the boat
According to Boat International
the twin-diesel-engine yacht was built by US shipyard Broward Marine in 1986
It featured four cabins including the master suite
all were equipped with flatscreen televisions
entertainment centers and en suite facilities
It could hold 10 guests with three crew members and was last listed in 2018 for $985,000
the vessel began sinking into the not terribly deep water of the marina at the end of Bora Bora Way
The boat was declared fully submerged at 11:33pm
Fire crews set up a boom in the area of water where the boat was docked in an attempt to capture any contaminants leaking from the vessel as it was sinking
an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water
