available for purchase The sale was held to help get rid of any remaining items staff members from UWGB helped to relocate reusable item to other campus locations Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Theatre on the Bay Program at the Bayshore Arts Center on the Marinette Campus "It's definitely hard for the community and glad we still have a presence with the theater and the fine arts building definitely bittersweet for sure," said Erik Aleson with UWGB facilities management UWGB opened its doors to the community looking to sell off tables office supplies and any other odds and ends not advantage of the sale planning to outfit its offices with all -- new to the department -- furniture "It's going to help us out a lot Just a simple desk could be a couple hundred bucks but with everything we got 15-20 desks so we're going to utilize it It's a huge costs savings so we're thankful," said Office Brad Bayerl While some people shopping the surplus sale were here out of need others were looking to take home a little piece of nostalgia "This has a legacy and it's been such an important part of the community for so long so just to have a piece of the history here I think really does Marinette County officials say there are no plans to repurpose the vacant buildings just yet telling Fox 11 UWGB is still responsible for the buildings And what does this have to do with Wisconsin but China now has the largest navy in the world Navy is key to a successful deterrence strategy in the Indo-Pacific The real question is: If China takes real action against Taiwan While American ships are still higher quality Navy is in desperate need of more warships the Navy is building a new class of frigates intended to be built faster and at lower cost than current classes of U.S Two of those would be built in Marinette and two more built at a second shipyard elsewhere Millions from Navy contracts could be coming to Wisconsin If the Navy and Congress follow through with the increase that could mean a big influx of capital for this small Wisconsin town.  In 2020 Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s contract for design and construction of the first ship alone was worth $795 million Marinette’s shipyard would need to hire new welders and other employees to accommodate this planned production expansion But that is a big “if,” and there remain many obstacles to the Navy’s expansion of the Constellation-class frigate program finding skilled workers and overregulation make shipbuilding unnecessarily difficult and expensive Another issue is that the Navy has added too many requirements to the Constellation-class frigate effectively changing the ship so much from the original design that it is — for all intents and purposes — an entirely new ship Coming back to a shipbuilder repeatedly after construction has begun and adding even more requirements causes both production delays and cost overruns there are simple solutions that can help small towns like Marinette to restore America’s Navy To make it easier to find skilled workers, for example, one initiative that both federal and state governments can take to assist shipyards like Marinette is to redirect existing federal education spending to training for critical defense tasks like welding and engineering reducing the overly restrictive regulatory burdens on shipbuilders would help reduce overall costs To solve the problem of adding too many requirements the Senate Armed Service’s Committee can move to require the Navy to certify that the design of the frigate is complete before they authorize any new funding for the program This will help encourage the Navy to move quickly thus avoiding cost overruns and unnecessary delays America needs Wisconsin shipyards to enhance global security These solutions are important because America needs shipyards like the one in Marinette to be effective which is why prominent conservative organizations like The Heritage Foundation are supporting dramatic increases in shipbuilding that would benefit towns like Marinette To facilitate that increase, conservatives are advocating for large block buys of American ships Block buys have historically reduced costs long-term and encouraged shipbuilders to invest in additional shipyard infrastructure based on marginal revenue and anticipated profits Marinette will soon be building two frigates a year This new class of frigate will allow for a more efficient distribution of missions across the fleet and free up the currently overtasked Arleigh Burke-class destroyers for critical high-end missions This piece originally appeared in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel An increasingly hostile China threatens America’s friends and vital interests in Asia and abroad.  Winning the New Cold MARINETTE — Last year, the Marinette girls basketball team said it was “literally unreal” as they took home their first conference crown in program history. Now, they've done it again, winning back to back North Eastern conference titles and this years senior believes it has started a new standard for classes to come. "That's kind of what we wanted to do – just leave our mark on the program,” senior Chloe Seymour said. "As a coach you feel like with this group every time you step onto this court you have an opportunity to win,” head coach Zac Barker said. The Marines have nine seniors in total and Bryanna Torkko, Riley Kieffer and Seymour have played significant minutes since they were freshmen. Since that trio were sophomores, they've led the team to a winning record each year. This comes after the program had gone more than 20 years without a winning season. "Marinette basketball has had a stereotype and to kind of break that and be different and prove we are that kind of team, it's something special,” senior Regan Hermanson said. "This is probably one of the biggest programs we've ever had just in my four years,” Seymour said. “It's great to see more girls become interested in basketball." Described as one in a million, the girls credit Barker, who is in his sixth year at the helm. "He always has a quick plan for us and motivates us and pushes us and he always says, 'no matter what I'm proud of you guys,'” Kieffer said. “No matter what we do, we always know he's going to be proud of us." They say the success all starts by being "pests" on defense. The Marines run a full court press nearly the entire game. "We always throw teams off,” said sophomore Liz Wade. “They're like maybe they'll come out in it, but for a whole game, it's really unheard of." While making program history is great, they say they have their sights set beyond a conference title. "Our goal this season was to make it further in the playoffs than we have before,” Kieffer said. The (19-4,15-2) Marines can win the NEC outright with a win over Fox Valley Lutheran, or a (18-5,14-3) Freedom loss on Thursday night.
