by JeanneTyler Moodee Lockman & Christian Flores (7News) — A child and two adults were shot and injured during a Fourth of July celebration in Marlow Heights according to Prince George’s County police Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz said officers responded to the 4500 block of Akron Street around 7:50 p.m LATEST |6-year-old in critical condition after July 4 shooting in Temple Hills at least two people began shooting their guns and it's possible that gunfire was exchanged One young child - a boy - was taken to a hospital in critical condition and two adults suffered non-life threatening injuries "Preliminary information says they walked up Whether they were here or they walked up from somewhere else we don't know that at this time," Aziz said it appears to be [that there was an exchange of gunfire] at least two people were firing in one direction that we know right now." Prince George's County officials shared an update READ MORE | Person arrested after leading Virginia police on pursuit into DC in stolen car Aziz said detectives do not know yet if the shooters were part of the festivities in the neighborhood or what exactly was the motive behind the shooting The police chief repeatedly expressed his frustration with the fact a celebration quickly turned tragic it's a very young child from early indications one of our youngest citizens is in critical condition right now due to the recklessness of gunfire - of carrying weapons here and using them - right in a neighborhood on a beautiful day of celebration," Aziz said Aziz was also joined at the press conference by Prince George's County Executive - and Democratic nominee for the U.S Senate seat in Maryland - Angela Alsobrooks "Tonight at a time when the rest of the country is celebrating freedoms the people in this community are here celebrating with each other having a barbecue - doing exactly what they should be able to do what they have a right to do in their community - when someone brought a gun to that occasion and it resulted in a minor child who is very seriously injured tonight It is unconscionable," Alsobrooks said "The fact of the matter is all of these occasions - the ones our community has a right to enjoy together they had the right to enjoy coming together tonight as families - they turned violent when someone brings a gun We have got to get these guns off the street." 7News' cameras captured several fireworks being set off in the neighborhood throughout the evening We asked Aziz if the noise possibly masking gunfire - or even the traffic from leaving fireworks events throughout the region - delayed the response to the shooting or other crimes I talked to one of our sergeants who was one of the first on the scene tonight and he described that situation out here," Aziz said it was very difficult when people are hearing fireworks and then they realize those are not fireworks They came out and handled the situation like our men and women do everyday." 7News also asked Alsobrooks what programs are not working to tamp down gun violence we're actually seeing the crimes come down We have fewer homicides this year than last year We're seeing every category of crime except for one it's unacceptable for families to come together - they should be safe in their own neighborhoods We're working along with some of our federal partners We'll continue to change our strategies to make sure we are addressing the crime," Alsobrooks said "It is absolutely unacceptable - whether it's a child or adult - for any person to be in their community in a block party setting and to be unsafe only because someone brought a gun This is what we are seeing: all of these disputes that would have ordinarily been resolved maybe through a fist fight That's the reason the focus has to be on removing the guns."
