Tavern that in a 2000 Inquirer headline was referenced as  “Elegance and Prices Put Marlton Tavern in a Class By Itself” is no more as crews have completed the full demolition of the once beloved Marlton Tavern The Marlton Tavern closed in early 2020 and very soon after that in March that same year we reported the liquor license was sold to the Cinder Bar family Today that liquor license is still owned by Cinder Bar but is unused.  We do not expect Cinder Bar to develop on the former tavern property The future for the former Marlton Tavern property It’s a big topic of conversation amongst the locals as ownership has not stated what the plans are for the property In my 2020 article on the liquor license sale I had captured in my writing some commentary that is no longer online… the “About Us” page of the now defunct website stated the building was constructed in 1898 initially built as a private home for the Brick family Somewhere along the way the home converted to commercial uses.  I see newspaper references in the 80’s that the building was used as an office “Comptroller/Accountant wanted” Eventually around 100 years after its construction it was converted into a restaurant…  operating as Clayton’s and then Scargo On Main In 1999 the Lavdas family took over the restaurant completely restoring the building to its original charm At that time of the closing I had found a video posted to a Facebook group where one of the Marlton Tavern owners toasted the bar and its loyal patrons.  The gentleman said in a saddened but proud tone that the night may be the last that the bar was open serving alcohol I tried to find that video again this morning but I cannot locate it The timing of all of these changes was just as the pandemic was becoming aware to the United States… with New Jersey shutting down temporarily shutting down restaurants in mid March That being said it’s clear based on timing of the 2020 Public Notice regarding the liquor license sale that the process to close the Marlton Tavern had started months before the pandemic swept the country “This place has been here for 20 years And due to the latest events we may not be able to have a final night So for everybody that’s come here for all these years. In the future you’re gonna be driving by here just think about when you’ve been here Neil from Facebook’s A View From Evesham contributed to this story No one has been covering the fate of the Marlton Tavern more than Neil at the popular Facebook page A View From Evesham (Facebook: Marlton Tavern Search URL) A quick search of his Facebook page chronicles the history over the last few years as locals and the Township’s Historic Preservation Commission tried to save the building from the bulldozers I don’t think it was made clear at the point of closure what the plans were for the building…if the owner had originally intended to keep the building standing and sell it intact not long after the closing the plans clearly shifted towards demolishing the building a plan to which the Historic Preservation Commission of Evesham initially denied In a June 2023 update at A View From Evesham, Neil does an excellent job capturing the commentary which describes the newer challenges that the building faced in being restored. (Facebook) it’s just important to know that Mother Nature can be a very vengeful entity… it’s amazing how fast any building left uninhabited for even a short amount of time can quickly see the elements start to take it back with the Tavern closed the applicant had shut off the water (as one would expect) but the water to the fire sprinklers was not turned off.  With no heat operating in the building a pipe froze in the cold of December… burst open… and water from the sprinkler supply severally flooded the building The commentary goes on to say that the ownership had no idea this was taking place and was notified by the Township about the flooding There was likely many hours of water pouring through the building The water damage destroyed the electrical system and damaged the walls floors and more…  and it was stated that in this case insurance does not cover water damage from a sprinkler system At that point the ownership stated the cost to repair the building would be an astronomical amount of money.   While they ownership did not have an estimate on the repairs at the time a local realtor who was representing a prospective buyer said it would have cost between $2-2.5 million to update the building and reopen it as a restaurant The building actually sat for another year with Mother Nature doing her best to take back the property.   In August of 2024 Neil noted that it looked like a part of the ceiling had collapsed inside the front room of the Tavern the approval was given to demolish the Tavern As of today there there’s no information on what is planned for the property nor what the Cinder Bar family has planned for the liquor license I am reaching out to the Cinder Bar ownership to see if they have any updates Marlton Tavern – Demolished 65 E Main StMarlton Roadhouse steak restaurant is coming to Marlton NJ taking over the recently closed TGI Friday’s in the AMC movie theater shopping center This news was initially speculated about a week ago at popular Facebook Page A View From Evesham.  (Facebook) Super-Sleuth Neil had discovered a new LLC was created for “Texas Roadhouse of Marlton NJ LLC “   There was no address attached to this new LLC formation but Neil also noticed that the TGI Friday’s property real estate listing had been updated recently to say Lease-Pending The final confirmation came late yesterday when a liquor license change public notice was published listing Texas Roadhouse of Marlton NJ LLC as taking over the license for premises located at 970 N Route 73 Marlton That address is the former TGIFriday’s restaurant As you can imagine this is very early in the process so at this time we do not have an expected opening date Plus you have to consider that based on their existing locations in Sicklerville and Millville… Texas Roadhouse really likes to carry the rustic Western theme both inside and outside of the restaurant… So I would imagine this TGI Friday’s building will see some significant remodeling to bring the “Texas Roadhouse Style” to Marlton Regardless it seems like a great location for the steakhouse restaurant with the shopping center already supporting a Whole Foods Market and an AMC Marlton 8… offering very good foot traffic From what I see from the existing locations particularly the one on Cross Keys Road in Sicklerville the public really does love this national chain steakhouse…   and this new Marlton location should prove to be very popular particularly sitting on the highly traveled Route 73 and Route 295… people will drive a little bit out of their way to get to Texas Roadhouse If you’re unfamiliar… Texas Roadhouse is an American steakhouse chain which specializes in steaks… and additional Southwestern entrees and appetizers Everything at Texas Roadhouse is made from scratch including the dinner rolls Even the steaks are hand-cut within each location Almost as famous as the delicious steaks is the Cactus Blossom appetizer which is a Texas sized golden fried onion with Cajun sauce for dipping The menu also includes Fall-Off-The-Bone Ribs One of their early signature features was their free peanuts where they would encourage you to throw the peanut shells onto the floor!  It was a great marketing campaign because people would talk about it “hey did you hear…” and then want to go and see it for themselves By the end of the night the floor could be completely covered with peanut shells that had been ground almost into a powder from guests and servers walking on them Today that practice is no longer allowed and in fact many locations stopped serving the free peanuts It seems the “shells on the floor” practice changed during extra-cleanly COVID pandemic era but then also was a medical risk for those with peanut allergies Texas Roadhouse Marlton – opened in Marlton on Route 73 about 2 weeks ago offering their delicious Mexican cuisine as well as a full bar featuring their signature margaritas and more I stopped in on Friday with my daughter to check the new location out… And while we did not order a full meal we did dive into the OMG Nachos as well as 2 drinks including their amazing Margarita This is the second South Jersey location for Plaza Azteca, with their first opened in Sicklerville (Cross Keys Road) back in 2015.    Plans for a third area location in Voorhees NJ were previously announced (before Marlton) but the Voorhees location will not be happening Back in May of this year 42Freeway in partnership with popular Facebook Page “A View From Eveshamfirst brought news of this new Plaza Azteca Marlton location The Marlton building was previously home to Bertucci’s which closed in 2022.  It’s location is along Route 73 positioned in the front parking lot of 5 Greentree Center Office Building There is a second building in the parking lot I’d say the property is about a 1/2 mile from the busy Route 70 and 73 “Marlton Circle” interchange.   In the immediate area are Bonefish Grill For the new Plaza Azteca restaurant it’s a beautiful rebuild of the square building with the bar positioned along the right wall and the remaining space available to the dining room While there is a low height partition wall between the bar area and dining room The dining space features comfortable booths with high backed cushioned seats around the perimeter.  The main dining room floor offers traditional table seating The bar (which is on the right side) seats probably 25 customers and features a center wooden refrigerator cabinet for ice cold bottle beers As you would expect Tequila is a big part of the Plaza Azteca menu and they feature a large variety of options The decor carries a Mexican theme but it’s not overdone Uniquely beautiful custom lamps add to the Mexican redesign as well as calming greenery hanging from overhead planters For our visit we sat at the bar and at around 1pm it was very busy with a late lunch crowd We had to squeeze in for the last two available seats.  By the time we left about an hour later we were in the mid-afternoon phase and there were plenty of seats available I went with a classic Plaza Azteca House Margarita which features El Toro tequila The OMG Nachos are prepared as loaded-up individual nacho chips so that each byte is getting all of the flavors of the dish.  Ingredients include chicken applewood bacon and topped with refried beans They were very flavorful nachos and I appreciate the individual preparation of each chip being loaded with so much delicious ingredients You may find it easier to put it on a plate and cut with a fork Their delicious food and creative drinks will absolutely make the new Plaza Azteca in Marlton a popular dining destination in the area… but when you factor in the recent closings of the nearby Mexican Food Factory and Jose Tejas… well I bet this new Mexican spot will be an even more popular eatery Royale Banquet & Event Center Atco Opening Soon Monroe Township Wawa Rt 322 at Tuckahoe Road Building Rises it may seem like Watch restaurants The location is in the Marlton Commons shopping center where Kohl’s and ShopRite are located Local Facebook Page “A View From Evesham” has been following this story through approvals and construction.  Some aspects of this story come from AVFE The shopping center where this new construction is taking place sits at the intersection of Routes 70 and 73 which prior to 2011 were connected by the Marlton Circle.  Back in 2011 NJDOT opened a new bridge overpass for Route 73 which effectively signified the end of the Marlton Circle The former Friendly’s building was located in the front corner of the parking lot actually very close to the interchange (Marlton Circle).  The Friendly’s building was demolished ahead of the construction of the new 4-unit strip mall First Watch two restaurants) will be located very close to another pad site building in the shopping center with that other one featuring Shake Shack and honeygrow.  The four restaurants in one connected parking lot area should make for a nice premium fast-casual restaurant destination not too far away is a Bank of America branch building (which has a shopping center entrance driveway between the two buildings) This project was initially proposed with a second building on the north side of Shake Shack but the Zoning Board initially denied that plan the board stated difficulties with traffic flow within the shopping center According to local website 70and73.com the developer quickly filed a lawsuit stating the denial was improper.  The Township and the developer soon came together to work on a compromise agreement which led to the development of just the one building at the Friendly’s property According to the Township of Evesham’s Zoning Board meeting minutes the single building is 10,800 square feet with space for four tenants With its development focused in the area of the Friendly’s property and parking spaces there are no changes to the parking lots for the significantly larger intersection of Kings Grant Drive/Barton Run Boulevard Project construction is expected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026 who added that federal funding is expected to cover all construction costs "This is first and foremost a needed safety improvement," Levinsky said of the project "A secondary benefit of the project will be congestion relief." Bruce Easterly of the engineering firm said the project calls for overlaying Taunton Lake Road and installing eight-foot-wide shoulders on both sides beginning at Kings Grant Drive toward Marlton Parkway a culvert and the bridge that spans Black Run near Camp Creek Run on Taunton Lake Road will be replaced Frequent flooding problems along the road will be addressed by one stormwater basin constructed on a currently unused part of the Laurel Oak Garden Center property and another on open-space land that Burlington County owns on Marlton Parkway "There are wetlands on both sides of (Taunton Lake Road)," Easterly explained as the reason for putting in stormwater basins "We could not put any stormwater management alongside the road." Scott of Kings Grant is far from the only resident concerned about traffic on the road said congestion has increased during the 23 years she has lived in Marlton adding: "It happens every year with the school buses….I do not go down certain streets if I know that it is the time (for) school buses or people (to be) picking up their kids."  it is not unusual to see one lane of traffic backed up in either direction from Tomlinson Mill to around the Kings Grant main entrance While there is a stoplight at the intersection of Taunton Lake Road Kings Grant Drive and Barton Run Boulevard there is none at the Crown Royal Parkway intersection Cars exiting there often have to wait some time before getting a break in traffic "There certainly was not as much housing all the way around," Scott said of the area when he and his brother opened Laurel Oak Garden Center about 24 years ago "I daresay 30% to 40% of the people who commute in Medford come down this way in the morning." As an emergency vehicle with its siren sounding went past his shop during the interview he added that the nearby firehouse in Kings Grant can sometimes cause traffic congestion A representative from Evesham Fire-Rescue declined to comment on how the narrowness of Taunton Lake Road impacts the department's response times, telling a 70and73.com reporter the entity "does not comment publicly on matters associated with traffic." Representatives from the Evesham Township Police Department Public Works Department and Mayor's Office Levinsky said after the meetings next week the project's plans and design will be finalized and the needed right-of-way acquisitions will begin there are no recent results for popular images there are no recent results for popular videos Your browser is out of date and potentially vulnerable to security risks. We recommend switching to one of the following browsers: Account processing issue - the email address may already exist Invalid password or account does not exist Submitting this form below will send a message to your email with a link to change your password An email message containing instructions on how to reset your password has been sent to the email address listed on your account A school bus struck and killed a man in a wheelchair in Philadelphia The crash happened on the 500 block of West Lehigh Avenue in the city’s 25th District at approximately 4:49 p.m. The adult white male victim was hit by the school bus He was taken to Temple University Hospital which was held for investigation by the Crash Investigation Division at Taunton Lake Road and Barton Run Boulevard intersection noise-reduction devices and sidewalks were on the public's mind on Tuesday at a virtual meeting about a $12-million 18-month Taunton Lake Road construction project in Marlton that Burlington County says will improve safety and reduce congestion an average of 6,200 vehicles traveled Taunton Lake Road daily between the Kings Grant entrance and Tomlinson Mill Road the latest year for which data are available that total more than tripled to about 19,300 vehicles daily according to Bruce Easterly of the engineering firm Taylor Wiseman & Taylor "The number of accidents has also increased each year," Easterly said "The majority of accidents are rear-end collisions caused by…either driver distraction intersection backups or vehicles turning into driveways." Another virtual meeting on the project will be held this Thursday at 7 p.m. Details on how to attend are here on the Evesham municipal website The project would overlay Taunton Lake Road and install eight-foot-wide shoulders containing bike lanes on both sides beginning at Kings Grant Drive (the development's entrance) and ending at Marlton Parkway A bridge spanning Black Run near Camp Creek Run on Taunton Lake Road will be replaced Frequent flooding problems along the road will be addressed by one stormwater basin constructed on an unused part of the Laurel Oak Garden Center property and another on open-space land that Burlington County owns on Marlton Parkway Shoulders will be widened one side of the road at a time meaning two-way traffic on Taunton Lake Road will be maintained throughout most of the project with only "temporary isolated traffic stops" during the bridge replacement "The project had to go through (New Jersey) Pinelands Commission and (New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection) approvals for all the encroachments in the wetlands," Easterly said "It took about 12 years to get all those approvals." Right-of-way acquisitions for portions of Laurel Oak Garden Center Camp Creek Run and 18 residential properties will take about a year to complete Construction will start once that process is complete Dave Scott, co-owner of the garden center, told 70and73.com on Friday that he was "open to the idea" of using part of his property for a stormwater basin Representatives from the Camp Creek Run declined to comment Easterly was asked by a member of the public if installing noise-reduction devices along the project route was possible "The traffic is not moving closer to homes so they are not increasing the traffic noise," he explained Another member of the public asked if sidewalks could be installed near the project route "We have to draw the line somewhere," he explained "If we include one thing for one concerned party then you might have to do something else for somebody else the project is just expanded much beyond what the county's budget."
