Inter are set to make a late call on Lautaro Martinez’s availability ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona
appeared to sustain a muscular injury immediately before half-time in Wednesday’s first leg
and was replaced by Mehdi Taremi for the start of the second half
He is yet to return to full training and missed Saturday’s victory over Verona
Defender Benjamin Pavard missed last week’s first leg draw and the weekend’s Serie A win
Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi confirmed Pavard had returned to training on Monday and is in contention to be available for the second leg
“We will decide together with the medical staff, together with the players themselves, because they will be the ones who will have to tell me their own feelings,” Inzaghi said during Monday’s pre-match press conference, as quoted by the Associated Press
“Pavard participated in the first part of training yesterday
Lautaro hasn’t trained since the Barcelona match
today we’ll see how he is and then we’ll decide.”
Martinez has scored 21 goals and added six assists for Inter across all competitions this season
The Argentina forward had been substituted off with the first leg poised at 2-2 and the game went on to end in a 3-3 draw ahead of Tuesday’s return at San Siro
Inzaghi had initially been more pessimistic about Martinez’s chances of featuring in the second leg when asked at full time
“Lautaro felt something in his leg and we will know more tomorrow after we run some tests
but it seems extremely unlikely that he can make it to the second leg
which will be a final for us,” Inzaghi told Movistar Plus after Wednesday’s match
but I don’t think we can expect the same from Lautaro
It will be a final for us and I’m counting on 75,000 of our fans to help us achieve this remarkable accomplishment.”
Inter have two major injury doubts ahead of the huge Champions League tie
Sport | Football
Inter Milan are hopeful Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard will be fit for Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final second leg showdown with Barcelona
Inter were without both players at the weekend as they secured an important 1-0 win over Verona to avoid dropping more points in the Serie A title race
Martinez missed the game with a hamstring issue sustained in the first leg against Barcelona last week
The club captain was forced off at half-time in Spain and is facing a race against the clock to prove his fitness
Pavard has not featured for Inter since limping off after just 15 minutes of a recent home loss to Roma
The good news is the Frenchman has taken part in a training session ahead of the crucial semi-final decider
Inter boss Simeone Inzaghi said: "We'll decide tomorrow with the staff and the players
Lautaro hasn't trained since the Barcelona match
Mehdi Taremi is on standby to partner Marcus Thuram - who was rested completely at the weekend - if Martinez is unable to return
whilst Yann Bisseck can continue to fill in for Pavard as the right-sided central defender
Hakan Calhanoglu is available after serving a domestic suspension
and Nicolo Barella are all set to return to the starting XI after being left on the bench against Verona

The fitness of Lautaro Martinez has been the biggest question mark for Inter Milan heading into their all-important Champions League clash against Barcelona on Tuesday
Following a 3-3 draw in the first leg of the semi-finals
both teams are desperate to secure a win at San Siro tomorrow
Inter suffered a massive blow when it was revealed that their star striker Lautaro had picked up a fresh injury
there were countless reports ruling the Argentine out of the second-leg clash at San Siro
However, Inter Milan appear to be growing optimistic about Lautaro’s fitness with each passing day
is determined to return to full fitness ahead of the tie
Now, in the latest indicator of Lautaro’s fitness, journalist Alvaro von Richetti now claims that the Argentine was seen in Simone Inzaghi’s training regime before the Barcelona clash
Martinez was seen operating alongside Marcus Thuram in Inzaghi’s training drill
whereas Yan Bisseck continued in place of Benjamin Pavard
who is said to have recovered from his physical issue as well
This indicates that Martinez might be fit enough to conduct group training sessions and could
get the clearance to play against Barcelona tomorrow
Even if the former Racing Club prodigy fails to start
his mere presence in the Inter Milan squad could serve as a real threat to the Catalans
With 21 goals in all competitions this season
coupled with his connection with Thuram upfront
could spell trouble for the Barça backline
With merely 24 hours left before the big clash
Barcelona will be keeping a close eye on Martinez’s fitness

BUMP AND STACY
The Seattle Mariners have been a different team offensively this season, but the improvements at the plate can be traced back to last season
Three observations from Seattle Mariners’ eighth straight series win
In a recent post on social media, ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney pointed out the Mariners’ offensive prowess dating back to the final two months of last season
the M’s produced the following AL rankings:
Olney joined Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy on Friday to discuss the Mariners
and he shared what he thinks has keyed the club’s recent offensive success
it’s not perfectly all the way through
who brought assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes with him
“Part of the reason why I went back and looked at those numbers was because just talking with people about Edgar’s impact as a hitting coach for the Mariners
I think it’s real,” Olney said
“Sometimes guys come in and they’re a pitching coach or they’re a hitting coach and they don’t have much impact
but I think Edgar’s had a real impact
so the vast majority (64) of those 82 games were under his tutelage.”
Olney revealed he had some bias sway his belief in Martinez’s impact on the Mainers offense due to conversations he had with former Mariners star shortstop Alex Rodriguez when they worked together on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight
about after the Mariners would finish a series
and Edgar would be in the back and he’d be sipping some wine
and Alex would go back there and ask him all kinds of questions about hitting
… Alex told me about how Edgar has this beautiful ability to simplify everything that he’s talking about
and Alex would pepper him with questions for an hour
and finally Edgar would chase him back to the front of the plane.”
Olney said he’s heard Martinez’s way of communicating is also connecting with this group of Mariners
“The idea that the Mariners for basically half a season would be second in runs while playing in their home ballpark
which everyone knows offensive numbers are generally going to be depressed
And I’m going to say I think it’s in part because of Edgar Martinez.”

Nick Martinez was set to become a free agent but the Cincinnati Reds made a qualifying offer to him and he accepted it rather than test the free agent waters
When the 2025 season started he was a part of the starting rotation
but he struggled a bit in his first four outings of the season
But Martinez has gotten things turned around over his last three starts against Miami
He’s thrown 17.2 innings in those three outings
and has given up just four runs – that’s a 2.04 ERA
Not giving up any home runs plays a big role in keeping runs off of the scoreboard and avoiding that has been key
He had allowed four homers in his first four starts and those four home runs led directly to six of the 14 earned runs he allowed in that time frame
“I got into a good rhythm with my mechanics
The command of my offspeed was way better today
too.” Martinez said after the game last night about his start against the Nationals
But he didn’t just talk about how things went last night
He talked about how he’s progressed a bit early on this season
“Working with (Jose Trevino) the last few times
he’s done a great job driving the ship and getting me back or going to plan A or plan B
I’ve just been really getting into a groove physically.”
On Sunday afternoon he threw more change ups than he has in any other start this season
he threw it more than any single pitch he used during the game – throwing it 28% of the time
as he had seven swings and misses on the pitch during his six innings
“I was throwing it more in the zone today
I think that’s credit to where my body is physically
I was kind of coming out of it a little early in my last outing
almost trying to force it and search for it instead of being a little more free and more athletic.”
The Reds rotation has been their anchor this season
Their starting five have combined for an ERA of 3.24
But it’s been Nick Martinez that’s been the exception thus far as he’s the only guy in the group with an ERA that’s been above 3.27
With his last three outings he’s dropped that down to 4.19 and is starting to look more like the pitcher he was in 2024
If he can keep that going then things are going to start looking even better for one of the best rotations in the game
There has certainly been some hiccups along the way this season for the Reds bullpen
But when you look at the main guys coming into games in relief – those who have made 10 or more appearances – they’ve been pretty much lights out
and Ian Gibaut have all pitched in double-digit games for Cincinnati
Only Gibaut has an ERA above 3.21 among the group
And only Barlow is above 2.35 among the rest of them
Nick Martinez
Doug Gray has been covering Cincinnati Reds baseball since the 2006 season
Past bylines at The Athletic and a few other places I've forgotten and or cease to exist
“The Reds rotation has been their anchor this season
Their starting five have combined for an ERA of 3.24.”
Pitching like that could go a long way in getting us to the post season and beyond
Hard to gripe about the pitching staff thus far
I do wonder about outcomes when the hot weather hits our hitters stadium
Another positive from last night is that he didn’t give up a walk
He only gave up 18 in total last year and was already at 11 this year
he’ll be back to the all star level Nick of last season
They are 29th (2nd last) in xFIP and 28th (3rd last) in FIP
a lot of those fly balls are going to become HR
and the advanced metrics say the bullpen will be a bottom third or bottom quartile unit
so some of the young guns could develop and give the bullpen more firepower
but imo Francona was late pulling Lodolo the game before and early pulling Martinez yesterday
Lodolo was a disaster waiting to happen and Francona tried to squeeze a couple more outs from him
Martinez was dealing and his pitch count was still low and Francona pulled him
we have no idea what Lodolo and Martinez might have said to Tito
of course: Managers make errors in judgment from time to time
but we don’t necessarily recognize them
It’s funny because in Martinez’ previous start someone here said he should never pitch the 3rd time through the lineup
Your comment about hindsight is correct though
You are using hindsight to conclude that Martinez at 86 pitches would be more effective than Ashcraft
who had a 0.57 ERA going into the appearance
It’s a place say non sense stuff for fun AllTheHype
And….There is another Big Guy that is coming back from TJ surgery pitching at AA (Chattanooga ) now
He could be a darkhorse to get a long look next Spring
So he likely gets promoted to AAA sometime this summer
besides Martinez (maybe) gets traded (starting pitcher) to make room for at least one or two (or three!!) young guys
Or…do we trade one of the young guys for something we need
I’m not sure Luis Robert sounds like a head case to me and not good fit for our team
but I would stick with what we have and wait to develop one or trade youth for a starter
We might be able to get a Wild Card spot but that’s as far as I can see us getting this year
The name of the game is pitching many people say…It’s nice to go through the everyday games counting on a good starter and a solid bullpen who keep the team with the chance to win…Just hope everybody stay healthy
But the Reds do need to score more consistently
They had a chance in the first inning on Sunday
and the “Middle of the Order!” coming up
It’ll be interesting to see how Martinez’ season goes
Last year at 142 innings was the most he’s ever pitched in a season
Can he hold up to a 175 inning or so season
That’ll be really interesting to watch
Maybe if Moll gets healthy again that will really complete the pen
but I think he’s solid overall for now in the closer role for this team
Looks like his season high is 122 innings from last year

As a Red Sox fan
I’m proud to own a few pieces of Sox memorabilia
I have a Triston Casas bobblehead (prayers up) from his bobblehead night last year
a supposed-vintage Pedro Jersey that I wear to most games I go to (not real Sox merch
Nothing big or major or worth a ton of money
Some old family friends just moved out of my hometown
and they were cleaning out the place before their departure
The family patriarch found an unopened Pedro bobblehead and offered it to me
unaware that something is Wrong With It until I picked it up from them
Is the spirit of the vengeance Pedro felt against Don Zimmer somehow trapped inside this thing behind the bobblehead’s tight
This is not the silly Pedro we know and love
nor is it the fiery powerhouse multi-time Cy Young winner
There’s a surprising lack of information on the box about it
It was made by a company called Bobble Wobbles
I know the absolute basics of Spanish and that’s it
Would this also bring out a malevolent spirit
Burning it would be kinda messed up to do to something that someone really hand-painted
I guess I could put little doll-sized sunglasses over it
but they might come off when the bobblehead bobbles
Could I paint the eyes so that they look less stoned
but it’s a real vintage Red Sox bobblehead of my favorite Sox player of all time
That might just make it worth it in the end
The Pedro bobblehead likely won’t be the last piece of Sox-related merch I acquire
but hopefully it’ll be the last cursed one

Rick Martinez's 9 Tips for Salsa SuccessLooking to take your salsa up a notch (or seven)
Martinez has some thought to help you get there
he was very aware that many cooks think of their salsa options as red or green
There are so many ingredients—vegetables
Once you think outside that red or green box
"I really wanted to give people freedom and creative license with these salsas to be daring
"So that was really the point of this book."
Martinez has seen this salsa creativity in Mexico
"One of the things that has struck me living in Mexico for the last five years is that people are so free to create," he says
use what they can afford in their salsas and it's really interesting."
"One of the things that I've noticed going to family parties is that there's a hierarchy within Mexican families that if your grandmother is making tamales
If your older aunts or your mom are making the rice or the beans
which then leaves salsa for the younger folks to make
"I've seen little kids—like 8
11 years old—making these amazing salsas
You don't need to have crazy culinary skills
You just need to have a basic understanding of flavor
what you like and maybe a blender—that's pretty much it
"And the reward is that you get to stand out among all of these culinary giants
If you make a salsa that everybody in the family loves
then people ask for it at the next family party
that is a pretty significant accomplishment."

but not all tomatoes are delicious yearround
If you're making a tomato-based salsa
and I made a pico de gallo with what looked to be really
but they had not flavor," says Martinez
"They were very showy and they were beautiful
And so the only thing that I could taste was onion and cilantro
That's why I encourage people to use different tomatoes—use what has the best flavor
and the only thing that you have are grape tomatoes or Campari tomatoes
but Martinez has found that sometimes a little bit of time can transform a salsa into something extra special
"I just love fermented salsas," he says
"You can let any salsa—probably with the exception of anything with avocado or fruit in it—sit on the counter for a day or two (no more than than four days)
I think you know day one salsas tend to be really aggressive
And a lot of the the ingredients are all kind of competing
Everything is singing more harmoniously together
You start to get a little bit of funk that I personally enjoy and the umami builds as it sits."
Check the crisperYou can absolutely got to the supermarket and pick up everything you need for a specific salsa
but salsa is also a great way to use up all those produce bits and bobs that you have in your crisper drawer—and a fun way to tap into your culinary creativity
"What I've been doing recently is just using whatever is left in the crisper drawer," says Martinez
and it's an easy way to use up things
it's just kind of fun because the flavor profiles are always different depending on what I've been cooking
"It can really be anything—like
I think strawberries and chili árbol is a really good combination
Add a little it of olive oil and it makes a really good salad dressing
"This is also how the cucumber salsa in the book was born
I bought the cucumber thinking I was going to use it for something
I need to use this so I decided to see if I could make a salsa with a cucumer base
very different than I think probably most Americans are used to
It was refreshing in the same way that spa water is refreshing—the coolness of the cucumber really tamed the heat of the chilies."
Related: 46 Summer Recipes You'll Want to Make on Repeat All Season Long
and that idea apparently applies to salsa-making
which is something Martinez found out the hard way
"If you're using fruit or tomatillos or tomatoes
you never want to blend above medium or medium-low," says Martinez
"You'll incorporate a lot of air into the salsa
and you'll basically have salsa Jell-O
and it's happened to a lot of my followers They're like
how did this happen?' You'll make the salsa
you're having company over and the salsa sits on the counter for like half an hour
it's literally the texture of Jell-O."
Rick Martinez making salsa in a molcajete
The phrase "salsa first" jumped out to us when we read Salsa Daddy
Salsa is often seen as a component to a meal
but if you flip the script and start with the salsa you might think about your cooking in a different way
"I think when you start with the salsa first
you can go in a lot of different directions," he says
"If you're making a taco there might be a specific salsa that you would want to pair with that dish
but if you start with the salsa first you can put it on a hamburger
"I think when you start with the salsa and you taste it like
Does it want to be on a vegetable on a piece of meat
"The other thing that's become my favorite easy weeknight meal is using salsa to braise a chicken
put it on low and let it cook for about 40 minutes until the chicken is falling apart
I serve it with rice or beans or in a taco and it's just so easy and so fast
and then you just dump whatever salsa is hanging out in the fridge."
Related: How to Make Store-Bought Tortillas 10x Better, According to Celebrity Chef Pati Jinich
Martinez has some strong feelings about the best type of allium for the job—white onions
Can you use whatever you can find at your market
but Martinez makes a strong flavor case for the white onion
the white onion is the most common in Mexico
so people definitely use white onion more than anything else
the white onion is really great because it has an assertive flavor
but it has a very quick start and quick finish
which detracts a little from the flavor of the salsas
I would much rather have an onion that gives you just a burst of sort of flavor and then fades out
as opposed to something that's just there throughout the entire bite."
Sometimes you need to add fatWhen you think of salsa
but some of Martinez's recipes call for frying the salsa
"When I first started cooking in Mexico
I didn't understand the idea of frying a liquid
cooks will blend the salsa and then you fry it in lard or olive oil or neutral oil
and you pour this liquid with a lot of suspended pieces of of chilies and vegetables
you're caramelizing those and developing flavor
you're developing the sugars and you're adding the caramelization
I don't know the exact science behind it
but I do know that frying helps to emulsify the salsa and hold it together
Sometimes when you make a salsa and it sits you'll get little puddles of water on the top
And so you have moles that are this perfect consistency—thick and rich and creamy—and that happens because you're frying them."
Don't forget the fruitMany cooks lean into veggies when making salsa
When we asked Martinez about some of his favorite surprising recipes in the book
"I made a watermelon based salsa with chiles and that is really
"You throw everything in a food processor and process it
It's a really fun picnic/barbecue/cookout salsa
It's summery and a little spicy and a little smoky
"The peach and pecan salsa was another one that I didn't know if it would work
I wanted to try it as an homage to my father because he grew pecan trees and and peach trees in Texas when I was growing up
'This is either going to be really horrible or really amazing.' And it is so good
It's one of my favorite salsas in the book
I think one thing that's important when you're using fruits to make salsa is that you need onion and garlic and chili
because it's very easy for your brain to take fruit in a dessert direction
are going to move you into the salsa direction."
Lenny Martinez takes the overall race lead ahead of stage 5 finale at the Tour de Romandie
The peloton racing stage 4 at the Tour de Romandie
Ben Zwiehoff and Julien Bernard in the breakaway on stage 4 at the Tour de Romandie
Remco Evenepoel hangs on to the selection on stage 4 at Tour de Romandie
Jay Vine leads the selection on stage 4 at Tour de Romandie
Lorenzo Fortunato takes third on mountaintop finish
moves up to second place overall ahead of finale time trial on Sunday
The pair had attacked an already select group to go away in the final 4km
and were closely matched on the final slopes
with only half a wheel in the final sprint
Stage 2 winner Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) took third on the day
with the Italian moving into second overall
The key action all unfolded in the final 8km of the 20km climb
with Bahrain Victorious and UAE Team Emirates-XRG setting a high pace before Vine and Almeida attacked to draw out a select group with Martinez and Fortunato
Four became two when Martinez and Almeida pushed on and battled for the victory
Martinez now leads the GC with only one stage remaining
though Almeida is very much still in contention
three seconds back ahead of Sunday's final time trial
so here you just have to try to not go too deep for too long
otherwise you can get tired very quickly," Martinez said at the finish
and in the end I had the punch to beat João Almeida
so I'm really happy to win here today for the team
and I think they [UAE] were trying to distance the Astana rider for the GC
Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) said goodbye to the yellow jersey after dropping early on the climb and the GC was completely shaken up by the top of the climb
with the top three riders now within three seconds of each other but bigger gaps after that
The losers of the day included the still-recovering Remco Evenepoel
who opted to work for his teammate and best young rider Junior Lecerf instead of his own interests on the Queen stage
and though Lecerf dropped three places on GC
assistance from Evenepoel does mean he keeps the white jersey
Even after over 4,000m of climbing on stage 4
and will be decided by stage 5's 17km time trial around Geneva
Stage 4 of the Tour de Romandie featured five categorised climbs
but the first four were really just a warm-up for the final 20.2km ascent up to Thyon 2000
set to be the most decisive finish of the race so far
a 14.5km steady ascent up to Anzère
a three-man group got away with relative ease
made up of Louis Barré (Intermarché-Wanty)
Julien Bernard (Lidl-Trek) and mountains classification leader Ben Zwiehoff (Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe)
in pursuit of more mountain points before the final climb
as UAE Team Emirates-XRG did much of the work to control things and keep the leaders within reach
The situation remained calm and controlled for most of the first 80km of the stage
with Zwiehoff accomplishing his aim of winning the KoM points
enough to ensure he will take home the jersey as long as he finishes the race on Sunday
On the descent after the penultimate climb to Suen
Zwiehoff duly sat up to wait for the peloton
allowing Barré and Bernard to push on but with their gap shrinking as the race approached the base of Thyon 2000
The pair started the climb still 45 seconds ahead of the peloton
leaving Bernard to push on ahead of the peloton led by Lotto and Bahrain Victorious
race leader Alex Baudin was one of the first riders to be dropped
and with very few riders to support him and try to limit his losses
but what remained of the bunch – around 35 riders – stayed controlled as Lotto continued to lead the way
an injection of pace from Bahrain Victorious saw the group start to shrink more quickly
including the Soudal-QuickStep duo of Evenepoel and white jersey wearer Junior Lecerf as the Belgian tried to help his younger teammate
Almeida and Jay Vine started to pace for UAE Team Emirates
dragging out a very select group alongside Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) and Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious)
testing each other without fully attacking
Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) rejoined Vine and Fortunato
the chasers weren't making inroads into the leaders
and the pair stayed ahead to fight for the win between them

investigators charged her with three felonies: official misconduct
promoting prison contraband and possession of a controlled substance
and trumpeted her name and picture in a press release email blast amplified by media across the state
they were dropped by prosecutors in the Delaware Department of Justice
prosecutors said the case was dropped because they ultimately couldn't rule out her explanation
A spokesperson for the Delaware Department of Correction declined to comment on the dropped charges

the detective wrote in an affidavit justifying the charges
She was searched at the prison and 5.8 grams of meth was found in her bag
She told the searching officer the drugs must have been planted in her bag
which had been in a break room accessible to at least some prisoners
state police said she had smuggled the drugs into the prison and the head of the Department of Correction said her arrest demonstrated a commitment to protecting the health and safety of those in the prison
After she was detained and taken to a state police holding cell
a detective read her Miranda rights and she agreed to speak
she told the detective that she didn't know how the drugs got into her bag
Martinez-Morales told the detective she believed it was planted by a prisoner and that another person
who is not identified as an officer or prisoner in the court documents
had warned her that a prisoner had gone into the breakroom and was seen thumbing through her belongings
That person had apparently denied issuing such a warning when authorities inquired about it
The detective wrote in the warrant that he ultimately ended the interview with Martinez-Morales because she continued to insist she didn't know how the meth got into her belongings
The detective also noted he reviewed video footage that showed a prisoner going into the breakroom where her bag was
"They knew that when they charged her," said Foley
He added that a prisoner later confessed to planting the drugs after his client was charged
Prosecutors declined to discuss the evidence
They also said nobody else has been charged
a state police spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing

Lautaro Martinez is being tipped to return from injury and start for Inter against Barcelona on Tuesday at San Siro
The forward was rated as doubtful after he picked up a problem in the first leg but optimism is growing in Italy that he will be able to play
Lautaro may even be fit enough to make Simone Inzaghi’s starting XI for the visit of the Catalans
Benjamin Pavard is also expected to return for the crucial match as both sides eye a place in the final against either PSG or Arsenal
Inter warmed up for the visit of Barca with a 1-0 Serie A win over Verona at the weekend
Inzaghi made 10 changes to his line-up for the game
with Yann Bisseck the only player to keep his place in the team
Inter went on to win thanks to an early penalty converted by Kristjan Asllani
drop in velocity 'nothing to worry about'The D-backs' de facto closer is also close to receiving more help from a mending D-backs 'penApril 30th
NEW YORK -- Justin Martinez got done running laps in the outfield early Tuesday afternoon and then strolled to the mound at Citi Field
The mound was still covered by a blue tarp with a Mets logo on it
The Diamondbacks' right-hander stood and looked around and then went through his delivery without a baseball in his hand
The brief session on the mound was so that Martinez could get the feel for what it would look like on the mound should he get called upon that night
A way to get familiar with the surroundings of a ballpark he was not used to and a technique that former Diamondbacks bullpen coach and longtime Major League reliever Mike Fetters taught him last season
Martinez’s health has been a bit of a concern early in the season. He has been held out of some games recently due to shoulder fatigue, and when he closed out Sunday’s 6-4 win against the Braves, his velocity was down around three mph
Martinez said that he has been doing a lot of shoulder strengthening exercises recently and that could have been why his velocity was down
but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about
I just feel like I’ve been working too much on my shoulder and I was probably doing too much work
That’s why maybe I was throwing that velocity there
The team’s concern level is low at the moment
as evidenced by the fact that they haven’t sent Martinez for any kind of MRI
Had Martinez complained of any kind of pain
the team would likely have reacted differently
but the fact that his strength still tests out well and there’s no pain gives them confidence that it’s not an injury
“I don't think it's all that uncommon for guys' stuff to have additional volatility when the pitching pattern has been a little inconsistent,” Arizona assistant general manager Mike Fitzgerald said
“So in talking to [pitching coach Brian Kaplan] and [manager Torey Lovullo] and the pitching group at large
let's monitor it day to day.’ If we continue to see repeated 96
then let's dive a little bit deeper.’”
Martinez was always going to be a big part of the bullpen as he opened the year as a co-closer with lefty A.J. Puk, but his role has taken on added importance with Puk out for a yet-to-be-determined amount of time with an elbow issue
The Diamondbacks did continue to tweak the bullpen on Tuesday
with Kevin Ginkel being activated off the IL and Drey Jameson optioned to Triple-A Reno
Ginkel was placed on the IL just before the end of Spring Training with right shoulder inflammation
Ginkel’s return would be a big boost for the backend of the bullpen
Ginkel was encouraged by how he felt recovering from his outings both in extended spring games and his two appearances for the Aces
“I feel like how I've been bouncing back has been really good
which I was struggling with before,” Ginkel said
and now it’s just going out and producing.”
As for Jameson
the Diamondbacks would like him to get some more innings under his belt and work in back-to-back games before bringing him back up
The right-hander missed all of 2024 after having Tommy John surgery in 2023
“There's definitely still some sharpness to refine a little bit to get him being able to find consistent success up here,” Fitzgerald said
Evan Kleiman: We always love when we have you on
where you had one salsa that changed everything for you
Rick Martínez: It was actually a really good friend of mine
and he puts pretty much everything on them
He wanted me to try all the different salsas that he had
and one of them was not anything like I'd ever had before
It didn't look like anything I've ever had before
caramelized onions but with a healthy dose of caramelized serranos as well
imagine the most unctuous and delicious caramelized French onions that you're about to put into a soup
Just these two ingredients plus salt and it completely changed the flavor and the profile of the torta
so I put some serranos with it." In the end
that was as much thought as he had given to that salsa
and therefore I'm going to make a salsa with it
Rick Martinez credits a two ingredient caramelized onion salsa in Mexico City with blowing his mind and changing everything
Speaking of breaking from the usual ingredients
I love kiwi and tomatillos as a combination
I actually really like fruit paired with tomatillos
it brings out the fruitiness and the sweetness in the tomatillo
So the kiwi was sort of a tropical pairing
and I felt like the kiwi had enough sweetness to really balance out the tartness of the tomatillo
Then it also takes you in a very different direction
Whereas when you pair a tomatillo with a plum
you get more of a prickly pear kind of vibe
it takes you very much into a beach and seafood place
plummy vibes that work perfectly in a kiwi salsa
would you pair that kind of sauce with something in particular
but do you feel that certain sauces pair best with certain other ingredients
or is everything just a mishmash of our own personal taste
The way that I view it is very similar to wine pairings
there were seemingly very strict rules about red and white wines and what you could pair with them
I think those ideas are not not enforced anymore
I think people just drink the wine that they want to drink
and if it happens to taste good with what they're eating
I think that that kind of mentality applies to salsas as well
I like pairing more tropical flavors with seafood because it reminds me of home
I have mango and pineapple plants on my patio
when you're at a taqueria or when you're on the beach
they're serving ceviches and tacos with those fruits in a spicy salsa or a pico de gallo or a salad
but I think there's another salsa in the book
and I wanted to make a salsa out of those two ingredients
I thought this would be incredible with pork carnitas
and the toasted pecans added an extra layer of umami and toasty
roasted nut flavor that paired so well with the pork
Let's talk about tomato sauces for a minute
What varieties of tomatoes do you use for most of your salsa
Roma tomatoes are the most common tomatoes in Mexico
I had a two-month window of opportunity to use tomatoes
and so I used whatever had the most flavor
I was just continually buying heirlooms and anytime I needed a tomato
If they had really good flavor out of the box
I might cut them in half and roast them or saute them in a little olive oil to evaporate some of the moisture and concentrate the flavors and build up some of that umami
char a tomato that maybe was not so great to concentrate the flavor
But I think the most important thing for me when talking to someone about tomatoes in the United States is to use the best that you can find
more flavorful tomato salsa using a canned tomato or a fire roasted tomato
use the onion that you have or that you like
The thing that I like about it versus either yellow or red onions is that the burn of the white onion is very quick
It hits you then it recedes whereas the yellow tends to linger
I think the flavor of a red is a little bit too aggressive for me
or if I'm gonna use a raw red onion in a salsa or as a topping for a taco or a garnish
I actually let it soak in salted hot water for five minutes
I just find them to be a little bit too aggressive and a lot of times
I'll only taste the red onion and not whatever it is that I'm eating
Let's talk about fresh chilies versus dried
whether that is a cooked salsa or a table salsa de mesa
you would want to stick to things that are red in color
So if you're making a salsa roja for chilaquiles or enchiladas
You could put a fresh chili in there but you're gonna muddle up the color
I would much prefer to see a red cooked salsa on chilaquiles or enchiladas than something that's more blackish brown
So you would want to use maybe chile de arbol
All of those are going to contribute to the red color and give you a different type of heat
Chiltepin and pequin tend to be pretty quick
Chipotle and Morita will give you that smoky heat
maybe you have a habanero that you want to use that's orange
It's what you like and what you have and the effect that you're going for
I know I'm going to be making salsa after this interview
so give me one idea for incorporating leftover salsa into a quick meal
the thing that I probably do most often is chicken
and then dump two to three cups of salsa in the pot
the other thing that I've been doing is if I have random vegetables in the crisper
I will chop those up and add it to the pot
but each one has been completely different because the salsas have been different and the stuff in the crisper drawer has been different
This gorgeous green salsa not only tastes like a day at the beach
We're using one of my favorite combinations
The kiwi functions similarly to tomato (soft
but its tropical flavor matches up with the tangy tomatillo in a way that makes them both brighter and bigger
A bit of basil always transports me to summer
Taste and season with more salt and lime juice if desired
for about 10 minutes so the flavors can meld

Inzaghi Cautious On Lautaro Martinez Fitness For Inter Milan Vs Barcelona Champions League Clash: ‘We’ll See Tomorrow’ | OneFootballSempreInter.Com
Simone Inzaghi is being cautious on the fitness of Lautaro Martinez for Inter Milan’s Champions League semifinal second leg against Barcelona
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews
Inter Milan take on Barcelona in the second leg of a Champions League semifinal tie tomorrow
And the biggest fitness doubt for the Nerazzurri concerns the availability of Lautaro Martinez
The Inter captain suffered a muscle problem during the first leg
Inter breathed a sigh of relief as medical tests confirmed that Martinez had not suffered a serious muscle injury
he had sustained an “elongation” to his left thigh flexors
Reports indicate that Martinez is now back in training
And there has even been talk of the 27-year-old being ready to come straight back into the starting eleven tomorrow evening
However, the timeline is certainly tight. And Inter coach Simone Inzaghi isn’t making any promises
MILAN, ITALY – APRIL 16: Lautaro Martinez of FC Internazionale celebrates after scoring their team’s first goal during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg match between FC Internazionale Milano and FC Bayern München at San Siro on April 16
Inter coach Inzaghi addressed the fitness of Martinez and also Benjamin Pavard
“They certainly have huge motivation,” he said
“But we’ll have to evaluate how they’re doing.”
“Pavard did some work with the group in training yesterday,” Inzaghi continued
“We’ll evaluate tomorrow what the best decision to make is,” the Inter coach made clear
Then, Inzaghi said that Inter “have had a great ride” to make it to the Champions League semifinals
The Inter coach said that tomorrow’s semifinal second leg “can be a turning point for us.”
“The components that can allow us to get to an incredible final.”
“Playing in front of our fans will give us something extra,” the Nerazzurri coach then predicted
BARCELONA, SPAIN – APRIL 30: Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona celebrates scoring his team’s first goal during the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Semi Final First Leg match between FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on April 30
Inter coach Inzaghi then gave his thoughts on how Inter can try to stop Barcelona danger man Lamine Yamal
He said that Inter “analyzed what we could do better” after the first leg defending the teenager
“The ideal would be for us to give very few reference points to a player like that.”
“He has great quality,” Inzaghi said of Yamal
“We have to do well all together in trying to limit him.”
“Then we know that they also have a lot of other great players besides him.”
who make possession their main characteristic.”
“We’ll have to play a match that’s truly worthy of Inter.”
And the Inter coach also congratulated his brother Pippo Inzaghi on guiding Pisa to an historic promotion from Serie B
“Pippo and his club deserve congratulations,” he said
“I’ve already congratulated them in person

Martinez's MRI reveals no structural damage in shoulderMay 3rd
PHILADELPHIA -- The Diamondbacks received some good news Saturday when an MRI taken of closer Justin Martinez’s shoulder showed no structural damage
Martinez had recently experienced a sharp downturn in velocity, which was a cause for concern for the team, especially since A.J. Puk, who had shared the closing duties with Martinez, has been out with a flexor strain and was recently transferred to the 60-day IL
Martinez was placed on the 15-day IL on Thursday morning
“The 15 days are going to be a well-needed rest for him
and we'll get him back in there throwing as soon as possible,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said
“And hopefully get him back here throwing the way he was.”
The Diamondbacks have a good baseline to judge how things look in Martinez’s shoulder because he underwent an extensive physical process, including an MRI, before he signed his contract extension in March
The news that there was no damage in the shoulder was not particularly surprising given that Martinez never complained of any pain in that area
There are a couple of theories as to what could have caused the velocity drop
One is what pitchers refer to as a “dead arm” which is when there is a loss of strength in the shoulder without an injury
“And if you talk to every pitcher that's pitched in this game
dead arm happens towards the end of Spring Training
When he first started experiencing some of that fatigue in the shoulder
Martinez increased the exercises he does to strengthen the shoulder which perhaps contributed to the additional loss of velocity he experienced
honestly,” Martinez said two days before he went on the IL
“I just feel like I’ve been working too much on my shoulder and I was probably doing too much work
It’s also possible that Martinez was hesitant to throw full out given the uncertainty with what was going on with his shoulder
Now that he has the imaging to show that there’s nothing structurally wrong
Lovullo said it was possible that Martinez could begin throwing lightly as soon as Monday
which would seem to indicate that he won’t be out for very long

Gallen's gem aids D-backs 'pen as Martinez (shoulder) hits ILMay 1st
NEW YORK -- Nothing helps a beleaguered bullpen quite like an outstanding start and some timely hitting, two things the D-backs got in a 4-2 win over the Mets on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field
Zac Gallen allowed just one run -- a homer to Juan Soto -- over six innings of work
and the Arizona offense did just enough against New York
Alek Thomas and Eugenio Suárez each drove home a run
while late solo homers from Geraldo Perdomo and Tim Tawa helped secure the series win
The victory was much-needed on a day when the D-backs' bullpen suffered another blow, as co-closer Justin Martinez was placed on the 15-day IL after experiencing shoulder fatigue
When the season opened, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo elected to use both lefty A.J. Puk and the right-handed Martinez to close out games based on matchups. Now, both are on the injured list, with Puk transferred to the 60-day IL due to a flexor strain in his elbow
Martinez complained of shoulder fatigue a couple of weeks ago and the team has been careful with his usage since
From Opening Day through his appearance on April 23
Martinez averaged 100.4 mph with his two-seam fastball
That dropped to 97 mph on average last Sunday against the Braves
and it was down to an average of just 93.5 mph on Wednesday against the Mets
when he faced three batters while allowing a homer and two walks
Lovullo almost immediately got another reliever warming when he saw the drop in velocity on the stadium scoreboard
and he met with Martinez and the team’s training staff after the game to plot the next course of action
That included Martinez flying back to Phoenix on Thursday and having some imaging done on his arm
“We just figured this was the best option for him to get back to Arizona
and let's find out what's going on in his shoulder,” Lovullo said
“We feel strongly there's nothing wrong
The reason the D-backs feel so confident that there is nothing other than fatigue going on with Martinez’s shoulder is the feedback they continue to get from him that he is not feeling any pain or discomfort
“I feel good,” Martinez said after Wednesday’s outing
Having both Puk and Martinez out of action puts Arizona in a tough spot
the bullpen has gotten excellent performances from lefty Jalen Beeks and right-hander Shelby Miller so far this year
Add to that the fact that right-hander Kevin Ginkel returned from the IL on Tuesday
giving Lovullo three good options late in the game
Lovullo used Miller to close out Thursday's game
Who closes going forward remains to be seen
“We have a deep group of guys that we trust,” Lovullo said
“I know everybody’s going to ask me who’s going to be the closer
But they’re going to heal and they’re going to come back and they’re going to help us win games
everybody’s going to hold down the fort and keep their seats warm for them.”

the D-backs selected the contract of left-hander José Castillo from Triple-A Reno
The 29-year-old has pitched parts of four seasons in the big leagues
Arizona signed him following the 2024 season to a Minor League deal with a spring invite
and he impressed the coaching staff before getting injured
In 5 1/3 innings for Reno this year since being activated on April 19 he has allowed just one run
“He’s been throwing the ball really well,” Lovullo said
playYamal: I don't compare to Messi (1:05)Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has revealed that he doesn't compare himself to Lionel Messi despite similarities
Many similarities have been drawn between Yamal and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi
because Leo is and will always be the best player of all time," Martínez said of the Inter Miami captain
All I can say is that Lamine is an important player
Lamine Yamal has made 99 appearances for Barcelona. Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty ImagesMessi scored 672 goals in 778 games for Barcelona before leaving the club in 2021
and he helped them win 10 LaLiga titles and the Champions League on four occasions
has scored 21 goals and set up 27 more in 99 appearances for Barça since being promoted to the first team in the summer of 2023
At 16, Yamal became the youngest scorer in LaLiga history and the youngest player ever to feature at a European Championship with Spain
He won the Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024 after helping Spain claim the title
he's doing a great job and has won important titles with his national team," Martínez said of Yamal ahead of his side's Champions League semifinal on Wednesday
Yamal, who lifted the Copa del Rey after his team's 3-2 extra-time win over Real Madrid on Saturday
played down the comparisons himself in a news conference on Tuesday
"I don't compare myself with him," Yamal told reporters when asked about Messi
so I don't want to compare myself with the best player in football's history
I still haven't spoken with him in person."

sparking immediate concern among fans and staff
Early reports from Italy suggested that Martinez could be out for at least a week
ruling him out of Saturday’s Serie A clash with Verona and leaving his participation in Tuesday’s second-leg in serious jeopardy
Lautaro’s absence would be a significant blow for Simone Inzaghi’s side
The 26-year-old has been in lethal form this season
with eight of those coming in the Champions League
the club confirmed that Martinez has suffered a strain to the flexor muscles in his left thigh
While Inter have not disclosed a definitive recovery timeline
they stated that his condition would be assessed “day by day.”

Sources close to the club suggest he will “do everything possible” to make himself available for the decisive clash at San Siro

Inter will now be sweating on Lautaro’s recovery as they look to reach their second Champions League final in three years

NEW YORK -- The Arizona Diamondbacks placed reliever Justin Martinez on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Thursday, a day after after his velocity dipped while he failed to record an out against the New York Mets
To replace Martinez, the Diamondbacks recalled left-hander José Castillo from Triple-A Reno
Puk (left elbow inflammation) was moved to the 60-day injured list
Martinez entered with a three-run lead in the ninth inning Wednesday night, but allowed Tyrone Taylor's homer before walking Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. Ryan Thompson got the final three outs in the 4-3 win
Martinez's fastball was clocked between 95 and 96 mph - down a couple of mph from his previous appearances against the Atlanta Braves last Friday and Saturday and down 5 mph from his peak velocity last season
who flew back to Arizona on Thursday morning to undergo an MRI
battled right shoulder fatigue during the back half of April
we were all watching the same thing - his stuff was down," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday before the series finale against the Mets
"We're going to find out what's going on with his shoulder
Lovullo said he didn't know who would step in as the closer for the Diamondbacks
Martinez and Puk have combined for seven of Arizona's nine saves this season
and we're going to miss 'J-Mart' - but they're going to heal and they're going to come back and help us win games," Lovullo said
keep their seats warm - hold down the fort and help us win baseball games."
Martínez's exuberance rubbing off on GuardiansApril 30th
CLEVELAND -- Angel Martínez made a diving catch in center field on Saturday to snare a Ceddanne Rafaela line drive in the third inning of the Guardians’ 7-3 loss to the Red Sox in the second game of a doubleheader
As Martínez rested on his chest in the Progressive Field outfield grass
Moments such as Saturday’s stand out for a few reasons
whether he’s on the field or making his way around Cleveland’s clubhouse
It’s all reflective of the 23-year-old’s comfort level in his second stint in the Major Leagues
and the mindset he carries at the ballpark every day
So you’ve gotta be able to enjoy it and have fun
that's all that you want to do: go out to the field and have fun
The Guardians certainly won’t ask him to change. Martínez radiates positive energy, and he’s been an energizing presence for Cleveland while showing growth in his second big league season
he has a .333/.339/.426 slash line and has played good defense in center field
“[He’s] a gamer,” assistant hitting coach Jason Esposito said
“The highest compliment you can give somebody is just a good baseball player
He’s really competitive and goes out and competes and works hard
Another great compliment you can give someone is they’re the same person [always]
That smile you see on the field is the same smile you see in the locker room
Martínez was in the mix for a spot on the Guardians’ Opening Day roster
before he was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on March 21 in a late round of roster cuts
after Lane Thomas suffered a right wrist contusion on a hit by pitch
Martínez noted he didn’t have his best rhythm offensively during Spring Training
His option afforded him an opportunity to work on his timing
and he credited Columbus hitting coach Junior Betances for helping him get on track
His progress has been evident in the early going this season
Martínez hit .224 against fastballs in 2024
“The biggest adjustment I see with Angel is he’s on the fastball,” manager Stephen Vogt said
… He’s one of our better hitters at adjusting to offspeed
but now he's actually hitting fastballs hard
What Martínez has done defensively has been just as impressive
Last season marked the first time he played outfield professionally (298 innings in the Majors)
after he came up through the Guardians’ farm system as a middle infielder
While he’s spent his most time in center this season (112 2/3 innings)
he stays ready to move around as he’s needed
And his mentality in staying ready to do so speaks to his maturity level for such a young player
“You’ve gotta have your mind opened up to be able to do those things,” Martínez said
you're gonna be able to play anywhere and do whatever you want
and it’s evident Martínez is having a great time
“Angel’s at his best when he's having fun
MLS Injury Report Roundup: Josef Martinez
Brian White out on Saturday | OneFootballFanSided MLS
The San Jose Earthquakes are one of only two teams in MLS who have multiple strikers with six goals already in league play
but they'll be without one of them in Saturday night's game against the Portland Timbers
Josef Martinez is unavailable with a leg injury, according to the MLS Player Status Report for Matchday 11 released on Friday
Martinez had scored his sixth goal in last week's 2-1 defeat at the Columbus Crew but was removed at halftime
Bruce Arena's group will lean more on Cristian Arango in Saturday's game against a Timbers squad that has scored 17 times in its last six games
Arango scored his fifth and sixth goals two games ago for San Jose
including his second from the penalty spot
in a 5-3 home defeat to Sporting Kansas City
Vancouver Whitecaps striker and leading scorer Brian White is officially out of contention for Saturday's home match against Real Salt Lake
Three days after scoring during Vancouver's 3-1 Concacaf Champions Cup victory over Inter Miami
it's unlikely White would've played much part in the match anyway
he did leave the match before the hour mark
suggesting this isn't merely a matter of load management
Ryan Gauld has already missed considerable time during the Whitecaps' surge to the top of the Supporters' Shield and Concacaf Champions Cup final
His return is thought to be near, while White has until June 1 to be fit for the Concacaf final in Mexico City against Cruz Azul
Minnesota United FC v Real Salt Lake | David Berding/GettyImages
Ghanaian striker Kelin Yeboah is officially questionable for Minnesota United as they try to respond from a 3-1 defeat to the MLS-best Vancouver Whitecaps last Sunday
But media reports suggest he's more likely not to participate or at least be limited to a bench role after not taking part in training on Friday
Yeboah appeared to suffer the injury in Sunday's loss
playing through it initially but eventually coming off in the 63rd minute
Yeboah is one behind Tani Oluwayesi for the team lead
Federico Bernardeschi had to leave last weekend's 1-0 home defeat to New York City FC early
but there may be some chance he can return in time for Toronto's home clash against the New England Revolution
The Italian is listed as questionable with a lower body issue
His status could be vital to the Reds' hops of a secon victory -- and first at home -- this season
given that he has scored or assisted half of Toronto's eight goals

Seahawks selected Miami running back Damien Martinez with the No
223 pick in the seventh round of the Draft
having played two years at Oregon State before transferring to Miami
he was named Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year
was first-team All-Pac-12 and led the team with 982 rushing yards
His second season at Oregon State was even better
rushing for 1,185 yards and named first-team All-Pac-12 for the second year in a row
Martinez might be particularly familiar to local football fans for his play against the University of Washington
having rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 84 receiving yards in two games against the Huskies in 2022 and 2023
averaging 6.3 yards per carry with 10 touchdowns
NFL.com Lance Zierlein's Analysis of Martinez:
Productive three-year starter with an impressive blend of power
Martinez is truly a "big back" who proves he can find yards after contact on most carries
He lacks speed to win outside but does a nice job creating alternate routes using vision and agility when it's congested inside
Martinez averaged 6.2 yards per carry on 514 career totes
He can catch passes here and there but could be best dialed in as a complementary banger capable of taking on the lion's share of the carries if needed

Fireballing reliever Justin Martinez's MRI came back clean
This was first reported by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic on X. Subsequently even more detail came out from Jody Jackson of Dbacks.TV
Good news on Justin Martinez- the MRI was clean showed no difference from the MRI taken around the time of his extension
He is likely to begin a throwing program starting Monday says Torey Lovullo
It is no surprise that Martinez had an MRI at the time of his extension
and explains why the team did not immediately send him for imaging when he first reported the shoulder fatigue
Martinez displayed ever-diminishing velocity over his next couple of outings
Things came to a head on April 27 when his two-seam fastball was clocked at only 93.5 MPH
almost seven MPH down from his season average up through April 17
Martinez was placed on the 15-day Injured List on May 2
The fact that he is scheduled to begin a throwing program on Monday may possibly indicate a minimum injured list stay
providing all goes smoothly and there are no setbacks
The earliest Martinez can return is Saturday
May 17 against the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field
He had not allowed an earned run through his first 10 outings
but gave up three earned runs over his final two outings before being placed on the injured list
At the same time Martinez began to feel the effects of shoulder fatigue
Puk went on the injured list on April 19 with elbow inflammation
The co-closer is now on the 60-day injured list and not eligible to return unil June 18
Shelby Miller appears to be the first choice for saves in the interim for Torey Lovullo
or even Jalen Beeks could be called upon in the ninth inning
depending on who is available and matchups
The table below shows the current pitchers in the Diamondbacks bullpen
These are the pitchers that will have to hold down the fort for Arizona until they get Martinez back
BALTIMORE -- Over the course of a Major League season
there will be many individual sparkplugs for a team
there’s been one player who has made a difference in the Guardians’ lineup
and they’re hoping he’ll stick around for a while
That, of course, is outfielder (and proto-utility man) Angel Martínez
who was optioned to Triple-A Columbus less than a week before the season started
only to find himself getting recalled 19 days later
On Tuesday, it was Martínez who lit a spark for the Guardians, tallying three of the club’s 11 hits (and two runs) en route to a series-opening 6-3 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards
"We had that last year when Angel came up
and he brings a ton of energy,” manager Stephen Vogt said
Martínez was recalled on April 9 to deepen Cleveland’s bench after center fielder Lane Thomas was sidelined following being hit by a pitch on his right wrist the day prior
having gone 8-for-14 (.571) in his first four games of the year
Part of what makes Martínez stand out is his all-around skills
signed by Cleveland as a shortstop on July 2
It wasn’t until last season when the Guardians approached Martínez and asked him to start learning the outfield -- he hadn’t played a single game in the Minors as anything other than an infielder or DH until then
it was in the outfield that Martínez found his home
He bounced between Triple-A and the Majors some last summer before he was recalled on Sept
“We asked him to play more outfield last year
and he came up and played a lot of center field for us,” Vogt said
“He's gonna get some reps in right and he's gonna get some reps in center and in the infield
And Angel’s definitely worked his backside off on his defense.”
“It's really impressive, for him just to be able to adjust and command the outfield,” left fielder Steven Kwan said
“Center field has to be the captain out there
has a front-row seat to both Martínez’s offense and defense
Kwan reaped the benefits of some of Martínez’s bottom-of-the-order hitting
particularly in a key three-run top of the fifth
Martínez opened the inning with his first career triple as the wind caught the ball
sending it bouncing off the wall just out of reach of Orioles right fielder Tyler O’Neill
Kwan launched his third homer of the season
a two-run jack just inside the right-field foul pole
they're creating havoc -- that makes my job easier,” said Kwan of the bottom of the order
and then they make a mistake and hopefully we make them pay.”
Martínez did give the Guardians a scare in the bottom of the ninth
when a fly ball to shallow right field made a weird bounce and appeared to hit his wrist
But Martínez kept the ball in front of his body the whole time
holding the runner at first and preventing a double
He was checked out by the training staff but remained in to finish out the game
That play epitomized the heads-up athlete Martínez is
a player who -- even when the ball gets lost in the lights
does what he can to prevent notable damage
and Cleveland wouldn’t have it any other way
“Always looking for sparks throughout the year,” Vogt said
“So when you get someone -- whether they're coming back from Triple-A
coming back from an injury -- a lot of times
they bring in a renewed energy that really sparks the team
And every time we've gotten Angel to us
And just hope -- hopefully we can keep him there.”
PHILADELPHIA – The Nationals made their first significant bullpen change of the season this evening
signing veteran left-hander Andrew Chafin to a major league deal and designating Colin Poche for assignment
has 601 games of big league experience with six different clubs
the first 380 of them with the Diamondbacks
he had a 3.51 ERA in 62 games with the Tigers and Rangers last season
Chafin opened this season with Detroit's Triple-A club in Toledo
posting a 2.13 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings before opting out of his minor league contract and becoming a free agent
He's scheduled to join the Nats in Cincinnati on Friday
Poche made the Opening Day roster out of spring training based on his solid track record with the Rays
but the 31-year-old struggled from the outset and never found a groove despite a number of opportunities
He also allowed 8-of-12 inherited runners to score
Ferrer as the two left-handers in a Nationals bullpen that enters the day ranked last in the majors with a 7.41 ERA and 1.77 WHIP
The team will be a man down for tonight's game
* Davey Martinez is away from the Nationals today to attend the funeral of his longtime agent
leaving bench coach Miguel Cairo to manage the team’s series finale against the Phillies
who represented him during both his playing and managerial career
who worked alongside Alan Nero at CSMG Sports for decades before the group was acquired by Octagon
Martinez is set to rejoin the Nats on Friday for the opener of their weekend series against the Reds
Cairo gets his second chance to manage the team this season
having already filled in for its April 17 game against the Pirates when Martinez was suspended along with reliever Jorge Lopez for allegedly throwing at Andrew McCutchen
the 50-year-old former major league infielder
He managed the final 34 games of the White Sox’s season in 2022 after Tony La Russa took a leave of absence
He joined the Nationals in 2024 as Martinez’s bench coach
Cairo will call the shots throughout tonight’s game
but Martinez helped him map out a plan before leaving town
* Michael Soroka will make another rehab start before the Nationals decide if he’s ready to return from the injured list
who has been out since straining his right biceps during his March 31 season debut
following a pair of outings for Double-A Harrisburg
Soroka has not thrown more than 78 pitches yet on rehab
The Nats will hope to get him closer to the 90-pitch mark Friday
also hoping he completes at least five innings before they activate him off the 15-day IL
the Nationals will have to decide whose spot in the rotation he takes
The most likely solution would be to move Brad Lord to the bullpen
The rookie right-hander makes his fifth career start tonight
having pitched well but having yet to complete five innings
* Batting practice pitcher James Frisbie is “in good spirits and doing OK,” according to a club spokesman this afternoon
Frisbie collapsed near the mound at Citizens Bank Park before throwing a BP pitch to Keibert Ruiz on Wednesday afternoon
with members of both teams’ training staffs as well as ballpark paramedics rushing to tend to him
driven off the field and taken to a local hospital
Martinez said after the game doctors had run a battery of tests on Frisbie but did not know the results of those tests
saying only that the 52-year-old coaching support staffer was “coherent and feeling better.”

By Steve Adams | May 1
Martinez was set for an MRI this morning after experiencing an alarming velocity drop over the past week
He’s gone from averaging triple digits on his power sinker to sitting just 93.5 mph in his most recent appearance
Though the right-hander claimed he felt 100% healthy
he’ll head to the injured list with a still-vague injury designation
The D-backs will surely provide more information on his status and potential timeline later today
today’s move to the 60-day IL only further underlines the fact that Arizona is going to be without him for quite some time
averaged 100.2 mph on his sinker in 2024 and averaged better than 100 mph on the pitch in each of his first eight appearances this year
A dip into the 97-99 mph range over his next three outings was concerning but not necessarily cause for full-fledged alarm
Last night’s drop all the way to 93.5 mph
in an outing where he faced three hitters and allowed two walks and a home run
It’s become an ominous situation for D-backs fans to monitor
and one that’s compounded by Puk’s absence
eight saves and seven holds across 72 2/3 innings for the Snakes last year
but the elite velocity coupled with plus strikeout and ground-ball rates helped to mitigate that bloated walk rate
clearly bullish on Martinez’s future
The contract contains a pair of club options for the 2030-31 seasons
which would’ve been Martinez’s first two free agent years
there was little reason to fear an injury (beyond the general attrition rate of pitchers in today’s game)
Were Puk healthy, the Diamondbacks would surely have just plugged him into the closer’s role and moved forward with Kevin Ginkel setting up
But Puk hit the injured list with elbow inflammation after a strong eight-inning start to his 2025 season
and a subsequent MRI revealed a flexor strain that’ll require a notable shutdown period
With Martinez and Puk both shelved, the D-backs will likely turn closing duties over to a combination of Ginkel and Shelby Miller
who returned to Arizona on a minor league deal this offseason and has been outstanding after earning a job this spring
Ginkel only just returned from his own bout of shoulder inflammation
which sidelined him for the first month of the season
he pitched a combined 164 2/3 innings with a 2.95 ERA
Miller has pitched 12 2/3 scoreless innings in his return to Phoenix
punching out a gaudy 31.9% of opponents against an 8.5% walk rate
The 29-year-old Castillo isn’t likely to replicate the type of results that could’ve been expected from either Martinez or Puk
but he’s a reasonably experienced southpaw who’s had some prior success in the majors
the southpaw looked to be breaking out as a viable bullpen arm for the division-rival Padres
pitching to a combined 3.23 ERA with a 35% strikeout rate and 8.4% walk rate in his first 39 big league innings
Injuries have blown up Castillo’s career since
He suffered a torn ligament in his hand that cut his 2019 season short
He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021 and missed most of the 2022 season as a result
It’s a staggering run of unfortunate maladies for the southpaw
but he’s shown some encouraging signs since joining the D-backs on a minor league deal last year
In 24 innings between Arizona’s Rookie-ball and Triple-A affiliates last year
He whiffed 24.1% of his opponents and issued walks at an 8.1% clip with Triple-A Reno
he’s started out by holding opponents to a run on four hits and no walks with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 frames
Castillo has had an arduous grind to get back to the majors after pitching just two MLB frames from 2019-23
He’s now poised for his first real look in a bullpen since 2018
despite accumulating four years of MLB service time through his various stints on the 60-day injured list
Castillo could be a multi-year option for Arizona if he can get back to his early career form
Enough time has already elapsed that he won’t be able to reach five years of service before the conclusion of the 2025 season
That means even if he’s back in the majors for good — and that’s far
far from certain — he can be controlled through the 2027 campaign via arbitration
Arizona Diamondbacks Transactions A.J. Puk Jose Castillo Justin Martinez
a pretty decent slide-piece and a passable cambio
I so just so happen to be a Free Agent however
and I *totally* won’t sabotage any save opportunities against my Padres… holler
Ginkel has to be the choice for closer now
Maybe Morillo can contribute at the back end
Could it force the hand of Hazen to make a deal with St
and how much would he have to overpay to get him
but there’s an awful lot of blue on Helsley’s Savant page for 2025… Anything close to a Top 10-15 prospect feels like an overpay currently
When i begged for David Robertson this was the reason
I’m not sure what you mean; Puk might be the best lefty reliever in the game
he’s never put up a season above 2 WAR
but he’s upper-echelon for a lefty reliever
Throwing Andrew Chafin on your list of better LHRPs is contrary to your initial qualifiers; have you looked at his WHIP over the years
Even assuming Chafin is a better LHRP than Puk (you’d have a hard time finding someone that agrees with you on that)
that’s 4 names that you listed; that’s not far from the best in the league
especially considering that much of their peripherals are a stones throw away from each other
straightuphonestguy at least pre-qualified his statement with the words “might be”; that’s a subjective analysis
Ginkel and Graveman are getting healthy at the right time
I’m guessing Hazen is in the market for a high leverage arm

Inter have provided an injury update and a status on Lautaro Martinez
The 27 year old suffered an injury and was substituted out for Inter during their 3-3 match in the Champions League against FC Barcelona
Inter have given an update on their website about the striker
stating that tests were done on Lautaro and he has:
“An elongation of the flexor muscles in his left thigh
His conditions will continue to be reviewed day by day.”
They will host FC Barcelona on Tuesday in the second leg of their semi final Champions League match
Diego Simeone’s ultra defensive tactics already costs Atletico 3 trophies and he is still hell bent on his same rotten ineffective tactics even after a major bottle job
Strikers hardly get any service and have to rely on either the opposition making mistakes or some individual brilliance
he is Mourinho 2.0 and nothing is going to change next season if he stays
I watched him in the U17 tournament and he was far from what people are saying about him
Echeverri and Alvaro Montoro is the real deal in my opinion
For me he is world class player .He has everything like dribbling
He will be most expensive sale of argentine league
Currently one of the best player of south America and best player of argentine league by miles
Many top world class ex- player are praising him
Recently Thiery Henry compared him with lamine Yamel
He is the top ranked player of river plate in almost every match
If you watch highlights of his last few matches you will understand his worth
But he never compared him with Lamine Yamal
That boy [Yamal] is head and shoulders above the rest
The other thing you didn’t observe correctly is Mastantuono’s right foot
It’s his weak foot and barely shoots or touches the ball with it
I didn’t see anything fancy about him
I hope he proves me wrong and let’s see what the days are holding for him

Bastoni
who faced Yamal during last year's European Championship
expressed admiration for the teenager's rapid progression
and he was not yet at this level," Bastoni told a press conference on Monday
"I was impressed by the level he reached
for his age and ability to create incredible things on the pitch
I think he is among the best in the world right now
maybe triple (mark) him like we did at times in the first leg
late chaos and Yamal's history-making feats
has set the stage for what Bastoni likened to "game seven of the NBA finals."
and I think it will be a similar game from the first leg
so I'm glad that we will play in front of our fans," Bastoni said
"I can only be proud of how far we have come
We are two games away from winning the Champions League
"We are sure that our fans will give us a big hand at the San Siro
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi agreed with Bastoni
stating that their defensive strategy would primarily focus on neutralising Yamal
we'll have to try not to let him get the ball
but that's impossible in modern football," Inzaghi said
Inzaghi revealed that the availability of injured defender Benjamin Pavard and captain Lautaro Martinez remained uncertain
"We will decide on Lautaro (Martinez) and Pavard together with the medical staff and the players
they will have to tell me how they feel," Inzaghi said
Pavard participated in the first part of training and felt okay
Lautaro hasn't trained since Barcelona
so we'll see today how it goes."

Martinez earns 1st win of '25 thanks to 'phenomenal defense' in supportApril 29th
CINCINNATI -- Coming off the field after a top of the fifth inning that could have gone sideways for him, Reds starting pitcher Nick Martinez couldn't contain his excitement
Martinez's defense kept the Cardinals from scoring and helped support his long-awaited first win of the season
Cincinnati’s 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on Monday at Great American Ball Park extended the club's winning streak to a season-high five games as it improved to 16-13
guys played some phenomenal defense," Martinez said
That stuff is contagious and it leaks into at-bats.”
Martinez gave up one run and five hits with two walks and three strikeouts while throwing 76 pitches
The Reds had dropped all five of his previous outings
The Reds held a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when Pedro Pagés led off with a double to right field
then Victor Scott II followed with a four-pitch walk from Martinez
Masyn Wynn attempted a sacrifice bunt on the grass in front of home plate
Catcher Jose Trevino quickly collected the ball and fired to third base to get Pagés on a force out
That changes the whole game," Reds manager Terry Francona said
Lars Nootbar hit a 104.9 mph rocket of a grounder to the right side
Second baseman Matt McLain picked it perfectly and threw to Elly De La Cruz before the shortstop turned the inning-ending double play
"You're hoping for a crooked number there
especially with the way [Nootbaar] has been swinging it at the top of the lineup
But that didn't happen," Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said
Martinez let out a yell and pointed his glove to the middle infielders
"To be able to follow that up and get a double play was good.”
That was one of three double plays turned by the Reds' infield
The Cardinals had just one more baserunner the rest of the game -- when Brandon Donovan walked in the sixth against Martinez
But he was erased when Nolan Arenado grounded to Noelvi Marte at third base for another inning-ending double play
including center fielder TJ Friedl making a sliding catch on a shallow fly ball to take a hit away from Nolan Gorman in the fourth inning
It’s fun to play defense behind Nick," McLain said
It was the latest game that highlighted an improved Reds defense this season. Last year in defensive efficiency -- which is the percentage of balls converted into outs -- Cincinnati was tied for 14th in MLB at .702%
Last season, the Reds' defense was at -30 in defensive runs saved
the Reds took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on Trevino's leadoff home run to left-center field
A hot-hitting Marte provided the go-ahead run in the fourth inning with his one-out RBI triple through the gap in left-center field that scored Gavin Lux
Lux also kept up his recent offensive surge with a 3-for-4 night
opposite-field double landed inside the left-field line and scored Austin Hays to make it a two-run game
Francona opted for Graham Ashcraft and his bullpen in the seventh inning after Martinez threw only 76 pitches
kicking off a stretch where Reds relievers retired all nine of their batters faced
“[Martinez] got us to a point in the game where I thought
‘Let’s give Ashcraft a clean inning,'" Francona said
It was a good first game at home for the Reds to handle
“It was good to keep carrying the momentum into the home series after a 10-day road trip that was kind of grindy," Lux said
"I think this was the best we’ve played all year so far.”
A baseball season can often be a war of attrition
A 162-game schedule is a grind for any team
and when the cold streaks or the bumps and bruises start to pile up
the teams that can weather the storm most effectively are often the teams that will put themselves in a position to be hoisting a trophy at the end of the year
The Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves in such a position right now
With Jordan Montgomery out for the season following Tommy John surgery and All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte and co-closer AJ Puk already on the IL
the Diamondbacks were dealt another tough blow on Thursday when they were forced to place their other closer
on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation
Martinez saved eight games for the Diamondbacks in 2024
pitching to a 2.48 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while striking out 91 batters in 72 2/3 innings
The 23-year-old looked electric in spring training
and began the 2025 season with a 2.70 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10 innings while picking up three saves as a co-closer with AJ Puk
He was able to pitch around a few baserunners to secure a save in his next performance
Martinez was averaging 93.5 on his sinker and allowed three baserunners before being pulled from the game
right?” said Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo before Thursday’s contest against the Mets
so we called [Martinez] in and had a really nice
We just figured this was the best option for him to get back to Arizona
and let’s find out what’s going on in his shoulder.”
the team is simply saying that Martinez is experiencing fatigue in his shoulder
and Martinez himself “feels strongly that there’s nothing wrong,” according to Lovullo
the team will get imaging done and allow Martinez the time and space to rest
work to get their young closer back up to speed
“He said he’s not sure why it’s fatigued,” explained Lovullo
“He was working hard to strengthen [the shoulder]
but we’re going to remain optimistic that everything’s clear
Just a little bit of a rest is going to get him back up to speed.”
with both Martinez and AJ Puk on the injured list
who will be taking the ball in the ninth inning to close games for the Diamondbacks
“I know everybody’s gonna ask me who’s gonna be closer,” smiled Lovullo
The three names that Lovullo mentioned specifically were Shelby Miller
Thompson is a side-armer who registered the final outs on Wednesday night in the win over the Mets when Martinez had to be lifted from the game
He has eight saves in his MLB career and currently ranks 5th on the team in Game Leveredge Index
which is a Fangraphs stat that measures the average leverage (or how important to the game) a situation is when the pitcher comes into the game
it would seem that Thompson is likely just an ancillary option to close games
The pitcher with the highest Game Leveredge Index score on the Diamondbacks
the pitcher who has pitched in the biggest spots this season
“His emergence and his growth from the last time I saw him has been enormous,” said Lovullo
“He’s executing pitches at a very high level and getting huge outs for us.”
Miller has yet to allow a run on four hits in 12.2 innings while striking out 15 and walking four
It’s been quite the resurgence for the former 19th overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft
who posted a 4.08 ERA in 735 MLB innings as a starting pitcher before officially moving to the bullpen in 2021
He pitched mainly low-leverage innings early on
before finally getting thrust into some medium and high-leverage spots with Detroit last season
“Nothing really changes too much,” Miller said of his shifting roles over his career
you kind of have to be ready for any situation at any time
The preparation part stays the same: just go out and you have a game plan and attack hitters with the best stuff you got.”
That stuff for Miller in 2025 has included a few changes to his arsenal
like modifying the shape and attack plan on his splitter
“I killed some vert on the split,” he explained before Thursday’s game against the Mets
The pitch now has 1.5 inches less vertical drop but slightly more horizontal run
the bigger change is that Miller is no longer as focused on using it early in the count
Miller threw his spitter early in the count 63% of the time and only 32% of the time in two-strike counts
It had just a 36% zone rate and an 11% called strike rate
so the choice to use it early in the count is a bit perplexing
he’s throwing it early in the count just over 44% of the time
while using it in two-strike counts 51% of the time
which measures how often a two-strike pitch results in a strikeout
and the overall swinging strike rate is up 7% to 21.3% overall
Much of that may have to do with how often he’s attacking low in the strike zone
he’s throwing his splitter in the lower third of the strike zone or below it 83% of the time
He did that just 70% of the time last year
So even though the overall zone rate on the pitch is worse
the approach is working much better for Miller
I really don’t want to throw for a strike,” Miller confirmed
“The key to any kind of pitch is just to have a look
You want everything to kind of be in the same zone as late as possible and break from there
So there will be times where I need to throw a split for a strike
but that’s not necessarily what I’m trying to do.”
Another change that has worked for Miller has been bringing back his sweeper
they wanted me to go to kind of that gyro or bullet slider
and I didn’t really have very much success with it against right-handed hitters,” he explained
which is just something that’s a little slower
Miller’s sweeper is averaging 15.2 inches of horizontal movement at 82.6 mph compared to his slider last year
which had just five inches of horizontal run at 88.3 mph
The sweeper has only posted an 8.3% SwStr% compared to a 12% mark on the slider last year
but Miller sees the value of the sweeper being more than just swings and misses
“It’s just a different look to right-handed hitters
and then obviously using the split and heater off of that..
but it’s just something to be able to show and throw for a strike and get ahead in counts
There’s gonna be hitters that swing and miss off of it
so it’s just a nice pitch to have a bigger shape to be able to use.”
The changes to the arsenal that helped fuel this breakout have also put Miller in the position where he may be called on to get the final outs of the game
He knows that being a good closer takes “confidence in yourself and your stuff
and then after that it comes to execution.” But that level of confidence is something Miller feels when he steps onto the mound right now
and he has every look of the kind of pitcher you’d want to slam the door on the opposition for you
that could also work against him if you’re projecting out saves since Lovullo could continue to use him in the highest leverage situations
even if they happen to be in the sixth or seventh inning
then Kevin Ginkel would emerge as the favorite to rack up the most saves in the Arizona bullpen until Martinez and/or Puk return
The 31-year-old saved five games for Arizona last season and was in the mix for the closer’s role during a strong spring training before shoulder inflammation landed him on the IL
He made his season debut on Wednesday night and was immediately thrust into a high-leverage spot
coming into the game with two out in the seventh inning
He walked Pete Alonso but struck out Mark Vientos to preserve the lead for Arizona
“I feel great,” said Ginkel after his performance
It was cool to be in a spot like that and deliver for the club..
The biggest thing was coming back and feeling good and bouncing back after an outing
I think the hardest thing as a reliever is when you come back from an injury
I feel like I’ve mentally and physically prepped.” From the third inning on
I felt like I was ready for that situation
The veteran has been ready whenever his name is called many times in his Arizona career
which is why his manager knew that he could turn to him right off the injured list
“I knew [Ginkel] was going to get back in that saddle right away because of that experience,” said Lovullo
“He’s already pitched at the highest level in the biggest games
and I knew he’d step into that and succeed.”
Being a “leverage guy” also means that Ginkel won’t strictly be used in the ninth inning
that I’ve come into games in the fifth or it’s been in the eighth with two outs
so it really doesn’t matter because there’s moments in the game where that momentum shifts to the other side and it’s hard to regain that momentum
Being able to keep that energy and that momentum in our dugout is critical
Anytime you can leave runners stranded or put up a big zero after we score
if Ginkel’s name is called in the ninth innings
“I definitely have appreciated pitching in [late inning] spots and delivering for the club
Getting the last three outs in the game is really tough
However [Coach Lovullo] wants to do it with Martinez out now going forward
The next few games will give us a better understanding of how the Diamondbacks are going to deploy their bullpen
but early usage patterns seem to point to Shelby Miller being used to get the highest leverage outs with the game hanging in the balance
but other times it could be in the seventh or eighth
Ginkel would likely be the favorite to come in for the ninth inning and secure the save
but Ryan Thompson will also hear his name called when they don’t want to put too much strain on Ginkel’s shoulder
that might make Shelby Miller the priority add given his success so far this season
but Kevin Ginkel should also see enough save opportunities in the coming weeks to be valuable in most league types as well
