Ivor D. Thornton was part of the second wave of the invasion on Omaha Beach and exited the landing craft at about 7 a.m. He was last seen wading ashore but was not seen after that. On June 7, 1944, the day after the invasion, Thornton’s unit searched for him but to no avail. He was then listed as missing in action. A day later, officials recovered remains from Omaha Beach but were unable to positively identify them. The remains were interred in the U.S. Military Cemetery (USMC) at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, adjacent to Omaha Beach. In 2022, Thornton’s family, in addition to the family of another missing soldier, asked for the remains to be disinterred and compared to Thornton and the other soldier. In September 2023, the Department of Defense and American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed the remains and transferred them to the DPAA laboratory for analysis. To identify Thornton’s remains, scientists conducted dental and anthropological analyses as well as a mitochondrial DNA analysis. Thornton’s name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at Normandy American Cemetery in France, along with others still missing from WWII. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for. Thornton will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on a date yet to be determined. All four cars earned top-10 starting spots via single-lap runs, led by Chase Elliott whose lap of 19.735 seconds was good enough for the second starting spot.  "I thought our NAPA Chevy was close," Elliott said "Feel like my balance was really good to go fast I just think we might need a little bit for the race but thought we had a solid day overall and really proud of the effort coming into the weekend a lot of work to do tomorrow and long ways to go Right behind him will be a pair of teammates with Alex Bowman (19.738) set to start third a week after winning a pole at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Kyle Larson was next in fourth with a lap of 19.754 seconds with William Byron Prior to qualifying, all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers took part in the second of two practice sessions Byron (seventh) and Elliott (10th) each turned in a top-10 single lap.  Hendrick Motorsports drivers have combined to win the last three spring races at Martinsville and the organization's 29 victories there are the most by any team at any track in NASCAR history.  The NASCAR Xfinity Series race was scheduled for later on Saturday. Hendrick Motorsports' Corey Day was set to roll off eighth in his series debut.  RELATED: Take our Martinsville quiz, win 40th anniversary diecasts!
