A major restoration project has begun on the historic 1859 stone horse barn at the Pony Express Museum in Marysville, with completion expected by August. Led by BHS Construction of Manhattan, the project involves replacing deteriorated masonry using historically accurate mortar.
Funding includes $100,000 grants from both the Kansas Department of Commerce and the Heritage Trust Foundation. The project follows heritage conservation standards and was supported by the National Park Service’s Vanishing Treasures Program. Museum board members and local planners played key roles in securing funding.
The barn, originally built by Joseph Cottrell, is one of only two original Pony Express structures still accessible to tourists. Restoration is estimated at $275,000, with current funds covering only three walls. Additional fundraising is underway.
The museum has seen over 7,000 visitors post-pandemic, many from out of state and abroad, underscoring its significance as a historic site.

FORECASTPolice visited Marysville home numerous times before son admits to killing fatherby WSYX Staff
Micaiah Swindler was booked into the Tri-County Regional Jail around 5:30 p.m. Monday on a murder charge. Investigators would only say Monday that Swindler was arrested for stabbing and killing someone at a home on Meadowlark Lane in Marysville, but Tuesday, with the release of the 911 calls, ABC 6 learned that Swindler's father was his victim.
"God told me to," Swindler told the dispatcher. "I had orders.”
Police records show officers were called to the home on Meadowlark Ln at least nine times since 2023, many times for what was described as mental health issues involving Joe Swindler's son Micaiah. The son called 911 around 12:30 p.m. Monday and told police he stabbed the man.
Micaiah was calm and matter-of-fact on the call with dispatchers. Rich Digney, a neighbor, saw police arrest Swindler and described him as calm as police took him away.
"The boy just walked out and gave himself up to them," he said. "And they put him in handcuffs, put him in the car, and that was it."
In court, he remained calm and politely answered the judge's questions. When the judge asked him if he had anything to say about what his bond should be, Swindler said this:
The judge set his bond at $1 million. His next hearing has been set for May 1.

A man filed a lawsuit against two Union County Sheriff's office detectives saying they targeted him and filed criminal charges they knew weren't warranted because of an ongoing feud likened to the Hatfields and McCoys
The lawsuit, filed April 17 in U.S. District Court Southern District of Ohio, accuses Union County Sheriff's office detectives Ricky Garrison and Seth McDowell of charging Joshua Bradley
with a felony when they knew the charge was false
Union County Sheriff Mike Justice called the lawsuit "frivolous," saying the detectives had more than enough information to charge Bradley
Bradley bought a car in December 2022 for $10,000
an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper pulled over Bradley and said he believed the car was stolen
Garrison and McDowell came to the scene during the traffic stop
Both detectives knew Bradley and other members of his family because of a "lengthy history involving numerous interactions with law enforcement officers from the Union County Sheriff's Office," according to the lawsuit
"The law enforcement officers would refer to the relationship between their office and the Plaintiff's family members as something similar to the feud between the 'Hatfields and McCoys'," the lawsuit says
Garrison and McDowell arrested Bradley and charged him with receiving stolen property
despite Bradley telling them that he bought the vehicle legally and had proof of ownership
Bradley posted bond and was released from the Tri-County Jail the following day
Garrison and McDowell then came to his home unannounced
The lawsuit says that during that unannounced visit
the detectives told Bradley that his story "checked out."
"Detectives Garrison and McDowell advised that because of their office's feud with Plaintiff and his family members
they intended to proceed with felony charges and expressly referenced the Hatfield-McCoy feud as the basis for their decision," the lawsuit says
Garrison later confirmed this to Bradley's attorney in a phone call
Bradley's attorney asked the detectives to provide prosecutors in Union County with the information about Bradley's story checking out
the lawsuit says the detectives did not do so
A Union County grand jury indicted Bradley in January 2023
That condition cost him a job opportunity in Florida
Union County Prosecutor's office dismissed the case in April 2023
Bradley is asking for monetary damages for malicious prosecution and civil conspiracy against Garrison and McDowell
Justice said in a statement that evidence and records prove the car Bradley was driving had been reported stolen
"He had no registration or title to show that he owned the car
in fact the registration and license plate traced back to a completely different car," Justice said
Bradley even tried to obscure the VIN number of the car so the deputy wouldn’t see it and double check it against the improper paperwork
Bradley also gave conflicting accounts of who made the purchase and the identity of the purported seller
All this evidence resulted in more than enough probable cause to arrest Mr
Justice also said the evidence was independently reviewed by members of the grand jury
which found there to be enough evidence for an indictment
Court records show Bradley has faced dozens of charges in Marysville Municipal Court involving traffic violations and misdemeanor offenses
He also served time in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking
Garrison was hired by the Union County Sheriff's office in 2017 and is still listed as a full-time staff member there, according to information provided by law enforcement agencies to the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission
McDowell joined the Union County Sheriff's office in 2016 and resigned in April 2024 while under investigation
McDowell was then hired by the Franklin County Sheriff's office in June 2024

Marysville Exempted Village School District plans to cut 30 faculty and staff positions next school year if a levy on the May ballot fails
While voting unanimously to cut 24.5 teaching positions and another 5.5 classified staff positions as of May 23
the somber Marysville school board on Thursday stressed the reductions will only happen if their levy fails
“This is only if the levy does not pass in May
and we have to make these known and be very transparent to not only the professionals that we have
but also to the community and our parents,” said school board member Jermaine Ferguson
three high school math teachers and two middle school foreign language teachers
The district will also cut positions for a middle school family and consumer science
middle school fab lab and a middle school robotics teacher
as well as a high school science and a high school social studies teacher
The half position is listed as high school English
A list of impacted employees notes that some teachers will be reassigned
while others have already resigned or retired as of the end of the school year
The reductions to classified positions include 4.5 elementary technology aides and a high school aide
One of the affected staff members has already resigned
At Thursday’s school board meeting
board president Bill Keck said it was a “sad
"This has no reflection on these teachers' abilities and on their performance whatsoever
some of them are some of the top and probably the top in the state,” Keck said
Board vice president Nan Savidge noted that the same was true for the classified staff
"Classified staff often are the gap fillers within any school operating system,” Savidge said
Marysville voters rejected a 5.5-mill operating levy
The district has placed it back on the ballot for the May 6 primary
The district reports it will cost homeowners about $16 per month
Thursday night, board members also approved shortening class time for elementary and intermediate students in the district
the instructional day at the elementary schools and Creekview Intermediate School will be shortened by 30 minutes each day for the 2025-2026 school year
Creekview's new school day would run from 9:05 a.m
and the elementary schools would have class from 9:45 a.m
MARSYVILLE, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — The role of superintendent at Marysville Exempted Village Schools is more than just a job for Dr
The 1995 Marysville High School graduate will take over as superintendent in August following the retirement Dr. Diane Allen at the end of May
Allen started leading the district in 2012
“I couldn’t be more excited for him or for Marysville.”
Howard is coming home after spending the last four years as superintendent of Mount Gilead Exempted Village Schools
he spent more than 20 years with Pickerington Local Schools
he said Marysville was never far from his mind
“This is a post that doesn’t come open very often," he said
"I think it’s because it’s a really good place to be
I’ve always compared that district to Marysville because I love the values
the relationships that are in place here.”
Howard acknowledged funding is the district’s biggest challenge
but that didn’t make him apprehensive about returning
“I want be a servant leader to this community on behalf of our kids because I gained so much from my time,” Howard said
Howard said a new superintendent doesn’t mean a new outcome if the May levy fails. Early voting begins on Tuesday
He said if voters reject the district’s latest 5.5-mill, 10-year emergency property tax levy, then planned cuts will take effect for next school year, including the elimination of 30 positions across all grade levels.
Those cuts would give Marysville a student-to-teacher ratio of 27:1
which would be the highest of any Ohio district
The current average is 26:1 and the statewide average is 20:1
the district is planning on eliminating 30 minutes of instructional time at elementary schools and Creekview Intermediate School if the levy fails
the passage of this levy and the local share of taxes that would be generated from that
and hopefully growing and improving up upon that,” Howard said
The last time Marysville Schools passed a new operating levy was in 2008
which occurred before Allen became superintendent
Allen said she’s strived to create more opportunities for student career pathways during her 13 years with the district
She oversaw the opening of the Early College High School, which provides a focus on science
and Allen said he’s proud of the pathways the district has created for the performing arts
“I think that’s the legacy that’s really left behind is we’ve intentionally designed opportunities for kids to think about and play in a variety of those pathways,” Allen said
and letting them drive their own learning moving forward.”
Howard said it’s a “huge task” to follow Allen
He praised her innovation and student-focused initiatives
He said he’s grateful for the relationships he already has in the community
and he looked forward to meeting many more people
“We didn’t know at the time we made our levy recommendation that this would be happening,” Allen said
UCBDD Superintendent Kara Brown said the decision came after a miscalculation was discovered that revealed the UCBDD’s additional 1.1 mill operating levy passed in November wasn’t enough to cover increasing Medicaid costs
County boards of developmental disabilities aren’t required to provide preschool services
but school districts are for students between the ages of 3-5 with Individualized Education Programs
“We are inheriting it right now," Allen said
"We will take on all their employees under Marysville Schools and run that service moving forward
it’s less than ideal for our financial situation
and it is just another stressor on the district when you look at our overall financial situation.”
Allen said the district anticipates dipping into cash reserves to pay for the preschool costs
that might mean another levy request in one to three years,” Allen said
UCBDD plans to seek a replacement of its 3.8-mill levy this fall
and pass the cost of preschool onto school districts
we believe we can make it five to seven years before we need to go back to the taxpayers,” Brown said
