second round draft pick The New York Jets drafted former LSU Tigers tight end Mason Taylor in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft The 20-year old Taylor is listed at 6’5” and 251 pounds He was a third team all-SEC selection in 2024 He caught 129 passes for 1,308 yards and six touchdowns in three seasons at LSU Taylor is the son of Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor, who spent most of his career with the Dolphins but was with the Jets in 2010 He headed to LSU as a four-star high school recruit and started the last 12 games of his freshman season in 2022 Taylor ended that season with 38 catches for 414 yards and three touchdowns and looked set to take his game to another level in his sophomore season but he suffered an injury in the second game of the year which caused him to miss one game and limited him for several weeks and he ended up with 36 receptions for 348 yards and just one touchdown His junior year saw his role expand and he caught 55 passes for 546 yards and two scores before sitting out the team’s bowl game to prepare for an early entry into the draft Taylor opted not to work out at the NFL scouting combine but he had a strong performance at his pro day and was regarded as a likely day two pick The Jets selected Taylor in the second round with the 42nd overall pick Let’s move on to some more in-depth analysis of what Taylor brings to the table as a player based on extensive research and film study although his length and catch radius are slightly below average for the position he impressed by running a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash and posting 28 bench press reps and a 7.06 three-cone drill All three marks would have placed him in the top five at the scouting combine He didn’t participate in the broad jump or vertical jump and his short shuttle was below average for the position Taylor is a modern-style tight end who has lined up outside or in the slot more than half of the time He lined up as a conventional tight end about 45 percent of the time with a marginal decrease over the course of his career Even when he did line up as a conventional tight end he typically was off the line of scrimmage and he regularly went in motion Taylor was mostly used as a safety valve during his first two seasons and didn’t catch any downfield passes until his third year He only averaged 10.1 yards per catch for his career and did not record a 40-yard play He’s not the kind of player you can expect to get behind the defense on a deep route but he did get down the seam to stretch the field for a few downfield passes last season Taylor moves around naturally and smoothly although he doesn’t necessarily use deception or sharp changes of speed and direction to get separation A lot of his production comes underneath or leaking out to the flats but when he has ventured further downfield Taylor looks natural catching the ball as well can extend to make catches beyond his frame and is able to hang onto the ball in traffic While he doesn’t necessarily have a lot of highlight reel catches in his film he has shown good body control in making some nice catches keeping his feet inbounds near the sideline and has made some impressive snags at full extension He had seven drops in three seasons at the college level but he showed dramatic improvement in this area with just one in his last 88 targets Taylor only had six touchdowns in his college career with five of these coming from inside the red zone He had 14 receptions for 100 yards and five scores overall in the red zone These scores mostly came about from Taylor leaking into an open area rather than beating tight coverage The Tigers showed good faith in him on this game-deciding two-point conversion during his freshman year as he showed a good nose for the goal line Taylor generates plenty of yardage after the catch because he will often be targeted on short passes that enable him to turn upfield while he might on occasion be able to slip the first tackle he’s yet to show he can be dynamic enough to break multiple tackles in space and create big plays from nothing He’s generated consistent yardage in the screen game averaging just under eight yards per catch He will finish his runs strong and is tough to bring down as he tries to fall forwards for a few extra yards One nitpick is that Taylor will often go to ground as he secures a catch in space seemingly in situations where he might have been able to stay upright and pick up some extra yardage He had one fumble during his college career Taylor isn’t the finished article as a blocker but he has shown some promise in that area but he also held his own when required to block on the edge He battles to maintain leverage in the trenches but can often fail to sustain it through the play he needs to be better with his hand placement Opposing players are able to get up into his chest when he doesn’t keep his hands inside Taylor stayed in to pass protect 93 times last season That’s more than all but three tight ends from Power Five conferences This is always a strong sign that the player is close to being able to handle the same duties at the NFL level especially when paired with good numbers for pressure rates Taylor only gave up a few pressures all year so his pressure percentage was also in the top five Taylor’s pass protection numbers were still good but he did give up a couple of sacks This one came about because of a similar loss of leverage as that which we mentioned will occasionally be seen from him when run blocking Taylor has decent strength and battles in the trenches and for every yard when he has the ball in his hands as noted He only had one contested catch in his first two seasons The main thing it would be nice to see him add to his game is more route physicality He is big enough to lean on or box out defensive players to generate separation but doesn’t seem to do much of this Taylor doesn’t have a very good record on special teams he lined up on the edge on the placekicking unit for five snaps but the last of those saw a last second game-tying extra point blocked as FSU overloaded his side and a blocker came free he never saw action on special teams again although that was probably because he became a starter rather than some kind of punishment or benching Taylor doesn’t seem to blow any obvious blocking assignments or run the wrong route and has a knack for coming back to the football when plays are extended or sitting down in open areas in the defense albeit that these were in the closing moments of a comfortable win Taylor was a two-time member of the SEC academic honor roll Taylor grew up with a father and uncle who were both recently enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and these people in his life to mentor him it’s not surprising that Taylor has reached a high standard to the point where he doesn’t have many interests outside the game and he is known as a hard-worker and a good locker room leader His on-field discipline has been good with just nine penalties in his career Three of his four penalties in 2024 were false starts Taylor hasn’t been too badly affected by injuries in his career so far but he was slowed in 2023 by an ankle sprain He missed the next game but then returned to the line-up although it seemed to limit him for most of the rest of the year Taylor fits into the projected tight end rotation with Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt neither of whom have been able to establish themselves as being worthy of a full-time role Taylor will therefore have his eye on this he will need to prove he can line up on the line of scrimmage and hold his own they used zone blocking schemes on approximately 60 percent of their carries which is consistent with other players the Jets have added on offense He was a teammate of current Jets defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse during his freshman year with the Tigers Taylor seems like a safe pick with a high floor and excellent upside with many of them likely to naturally improve as he continues to mature and gets used to NFL lifting and conditioning programs The tight end rotation was one of the weakest spots for the Jets following the departure of Tyler Conklin and the team will be happy to have been able to add Taylor to help fill that out Some rumors suggested they had interest in Tyler Warren in the first round but the assumption is that they felt the drop-off at tight end was less than at right tackle It seems likely that Taylor will get a lot of opportunities for playing time and then that should mean he is involved in the passing game based on Fields’ recent history the Jets will be hopeful that Taylor can develop into one of the better tight ends the team has had in recent memory The strides he made in several key areas last season are hopefully a positive sign that this is feasible The song “400 Degreez” by Juvenile rained through the speakers inside Wells Fargo Arena The Des Moines faithful were that the merchandise shack would replace a tent where snacks are currently sold but told Ruggiero they were not prepared to approve it or even take the initial step of declaring the application complete until the plan was approved and stamped by a licensed engineer Board members said there was also at least one existing structure not present on the plan and that they wanted more information on a specific timeline for when each aspect of the plan would be built “I don’t see any timeline; that was one of the questions I had,” said Planning Board Chair Dane Rota saying that in conversations with board planning consultant Cassie Cashin Cashin indicated a stamped plan wasn’t required until the final approval phase She said she had held off on finalizing the plan until she heard board merchandise shack and noted that she is hoping to have it up as soon as possible I’m only open for five months,” Ruggiero said of the summer-based business “This shouldn’t be a big discussion – you’re acting like it’s a new business.” The board reviewed the checklist of completion and noted some items that they considered unfulfilled including showing that there was sufficient area for a septic system for the proposed toilets and additional information on the lighting for the toilets to show it was sufficient for safety The board has received feedback on the plan from the police and highway departments and both offered no objection to the changes The police indicated that the toilets should have sufficient lighting The Fire Department did not respond to a request for comment but Select Board ex-officio Charlie Moser indicated he’d like to see comments from the fire chief specifically related to the seating areas and their safety from a fire-evacuation standpoint Ruggiero said that the seating would be identical to what is already on the property Ruggiero asked if removing the toilets from the proposal would allow for an approval that night but the board indicated that they were not prepared to do so without the final plans “I’d have to see an engineered plan before I’d be willing to approve it,” said Moser “it’s not a particularly objectionable plan,” but that he wasn’t willing to approve it without seeing finalized plans The board did vote on whether to accept the plans as sufficiently complete to start the public hearing on the plan but the majority of the board found that it was not and agreed to continue the hearing to a future meeting Ruggiero requested a meeting sooner than the board’s regularly scheduled monthly session and the board agreed to His familiarity with BYU dates back to 2021 when he attended a BYU game at Lavell Edwards Stadium "I got to come out to a game back in 2021 I think when they played against USF," Mason said But obviously that comes from a great winning culture and Coach Sitake and a lot of the staff has been at BYU for a while now so it shows the stability in the program." "Coach Hill and Coach Fowler have both said how they just love the way I play the game Flying around the field with my speed and physicality especially at my size and how I can do many different things on the field whether it’s playing in the post He can see how I can do it and how my traits will translate to the next level both in college and eventually putting me in the NFL." Mason is expected to have a busy couple of months before he makes his college decision He will take his official visits in May and June before he announces his college decision on July 4th On what he is hoping to accomplish on his BYU official visit "On my OV I’m hoping to see what BYU’s plan for me in the program is and how it would translate to me getting to the NFL Then just building more of a relationship with all of the coaches and seeing if it’s the right fit for me in the program and at the school." over his Last Night of the Proms comment When I heard my name my whole body shone with delight as I saw when I watched the footage back later relief mixed with impossible joy on my face I walked out in front of the standing crowd like a boy in a dreamworld … my family in a row was also hosting a thread of darkened disbelief turning on the idea that being Black meant I couldn’t possibly have been good enough I was the first and therefore the unconscionable that itself was proof there should be none of us now We were damned if we won and damned if we didn’t my parents folded all of this into their quiet whispering together and hid it from me … The radio and newspaper interviews let me know without hiding it that I had questions to answer was I a bona fide good cellist or“just” a Black musician Was I really fit to be pushed into this spotlight and stand next to “real” classical musicians who looked authentic for making my Black identity visible and meaningful when clearly it’s on your mind because that’s what you’re asking me about.” This double-bind thrust upon me of denial and yet responsibility for my identity was a confusing but familiar message The only route was working harder … I wanted on improving all the time and being the best musician I could be But I carried a responsibility I couldn’t shake I wanted to represent hope and possibility for children families and people who relied on the visible fact of who I was Having a choice didn’t come into it as there was none and never had been I couldn’t pretend to be anyone I wasn’t but somehow I had to place Black and classical next to each other in a way that made perfect ‘When I heard my name my whole body shone with delight.’ Sheku Kanneh-Mason winning BBC Young Musician in 2016 Photograph: Mark Allan/BBC/PAOn music educationIn effect we have a two-tier education system in the UK and its result is that we are educating our children differently from each other Private schools offer prestigious music scholarships for skilled young musicians and their music facilities are often state-of-the-art Eton College’s website boasts of an astonishing offering of “two concert halls a music library and a large number of teaching and practice rooms” It also advertises music scholarships: ‘Each year around 27 boys from a wide variety of backgrounds arrive at Eton as part of our Music Award programme receiving specialist support to develop their musical talents.” Similarly Winchester College does not shy away from music as a valid career aspiration: “Music Awards are available to any candidate who shows exceptional musical talent Many former pupils have highly successful careers as performers conductors and composers.” And at Marlborough College the website acknowledges and encourages music as a significant career possibility: “Where applicable individual learning programmes are designed to meet the demands and needs of those wishing to study music at conservatoire or university following Marlborough.” To be educated in music within these schools belief and an appreciation of the importance of music And all this comes hand-in-hand with education and access Sheku Kanneh-Mason performing at 2023’s Last Night of the Proms featuring the BBC Symphony Orchestra Chorus and BBC Singers conducted by Marin Alsop Photograph: Chris ChristodoulouOn the Last Night of the PromsI appeared on the BBC Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs in January 2024 should be dropped from the Last Night of the Proms repertoire There are a few things that are guaranteed to spark the volcano of racism that bubbles underground in the UK Many people outside the UK were frankly bemused by the rage I had quietly stoked and could afford an amused and rather wry glance at it all I am a passionate supporter of the BBC Proms Its series of concerts are a testament to the strength and creativity of live classical music and I treasure the significance of this summer festival and its continuing legacy A number of the concerts are televised but it’s always been the case that the Last Night is reserved for the showcase It’s a night where Britishness is proudly exhibited in all its joy We hear music from around the UK – from Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland – sea shanties from Britain’s island traditions A lot of the repertoire is interchangeable and can be altered dependent on the choice of musicians and programme planners reflecting the passions or obsessions of the day and an ice-hard determination to preserve its place has settled around it It’s a moment that most musicians and those who decide the repertoire would dearly love to leave behind as a rather embarrassing reminder of a Britishness that celebrates imperial glory and subjugation It’s a moment that acts to turn away many who themselves The angry and somewhat baffling energy directed at retaining Rule seems to rest on the idea that here is Britishness Here are the root and proof of “our” nationalist pride It makes no odds – and seems utterly enraging to the defenders of this song – that there are many of us who don’t fit into that “we” or who feel profoundly and aggressively attacked by it I had been honoured to perform at the Last Night the summer before. I loved playing and collaborating with the incredible Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen and the Last Night is a wonderful culmination of the world-class inclusive and exceptional concerts in the weeks that precede it there was nothing controversial about the lyrics of Rule I was not required to be on stage for its rowdy the entire – almost entire – Royal Albert Hall of 5,000 people roaring the lines: “Rule never will be slaves.” Using the words from a 1740 poem and set to music by Thomas Arne in the same year it is a composition tied to a particular kind of patriotism Its vigour and intent were born in Britain’s burgeoning slave trade and at the height of its thundering imperialism I wasn’t asked on the radio to give my historical analysis of the song but to explain how I felt and could have felt being in the room while the song was belted out I had chosen to remain backstage for this moment because it made me – and many others – feel uncomfortable but hoped my response was valid because honest but to whole groups of British people who felt we had a stake in a definition of Britishness If our inclusion meant we should happily boast that we were not people who could be enslaved or subjugated by navy or army had been unable to escape their seats in the auditorium and sat as crowds stood and shout-sang their victorious nationhood around them Most of my family were in tears by the end and all of them were miserable and frightened My truthful and understated remark on Desert Island Discs that the song made many of us “uncomfortable” was greeted with an uproarious wave of censure and horror against me in the media and an unguarded uprising of racist bile on social media to “go back home” and to “‘keep my mouth shut” inflammatory reactions such as these operate on the same spectrum as the indignant were excluded or frightened by a nationalism we couldn’t share If we wanted to stay at the centre and apex of our most prestigious classical music festival proudly broadcast nationally on Saturday evening television and radio our voices had to be fervently and bitterly silenced Then if playing classical music is an exercise in self-denial This is an edited extract from The Power of Music: How Music Connects Us All by Sheku Kanneh-Mason, published by Viking (£16.99). Meanwhile, Stephens has emerged as a superstar in BKFC, even getting called out for a fight by long-time rival Conor McGregor Mason Jones was keen from early on to show off his striking, particularly against a renowned knockout artist like Jeremy Stephens. The former featherweight contender is eight years the senior of his rival, and a veteran of 50 fights to the Welshman’s 17. But when he appeared on Desert Island Discs last year In his debut book, The Power of Music he recounts what happened next: “My truthful and understated remark … was greeted with an uproarious wave of censure and horror against me in the media and an unguarded uprising of racist bile on social media.” ‘If there are things I am struggling with practising and playing are always helpful.’ Kanneh-Mason at the Barbican Photograph: David Levene/The GuardianHe had stumbled on an “ice-hard determination” he writes – the book is a mix of autobiography and musical manifesto – to preserve a place for a deeply troubling song Its “vigour and intent were born in Britain’s burgeoning slave trade and at the height of its thundering imperialism” His remark let loose a “volcano of racism” On social media people called for him to be “tagged flogged and deported” and to “keep [his] n***er mouth shut” how angry and aggressive people can be about attacking groups of people” was “disproportionate to the intensity of the comment I made for the first time since 2017 (pure coincidence he writes about playing in a way that is so grounded joyous and straightforward that anyone who has had the good fortune to make music with others – choir amateur chamber group – will feel his words resonating his upbringing was less of a hothouse environment than one in which music was as much part of life as eating or playing football He writes of the “energetic conversation and teasing battle” of performing duo sonatas with his eldest sibling as if music-making was an extension of the babble round the dinner table He now flat-shares in London with his brother a guitarist – he likes to come home to a busy “It wasn’t some big project,” he says of the family’s musicianship and they loved learning instruments as children It became clear very quickly that Isata was very into it and enjoyed it and then the rest of us kind of followed on from that.” He adds: “My parents also like the idea of learning something that you can do endlessly You can constantly practise and explore and get more from music And that’s such a universe to give a child.” It wasn’t just the family home where music was fostered I was surprised to learn from the book how important his Nottingham state school was to his and his siblings’ musical formation – after all he was in London having lessons at the Royal Academy of Music’s Saturday school from a young age He loved playing instruments he wasn’t so advanced on – bass guitar and trumpet – in bands and for shows and spent time “being part of a bigger musical community and just sharing ideas … Without that I certainly wouldn’t be the musician I am.” “optimistic – just because I am an optimistic person” He relishes the fact that music is mutable using it “when other people would take out a book” “I like the process of building something that you can’t see and you can’t preserve The Power of Music by Sheku Kanneh-Mason (Penguin Books Ltd, £16.99). Rudolph has starting experience both in Pittsburgh and with the Tennessee Titans though he is not considered a long-term solution.  He will serve more as a bridge to whichever quarterback gets the reins to the franchise next But that does not seem to bother him much months out from the start of training camp.  he is mostly excited to be back Pittsburgh and representing a vibrant sports environment He made that perfectly clear while volunteering at the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on Saturday.  Now the competitor in Rudolph hopes to prove the Steelers right in reclaiming him during free agency The Steelers did take a flier on Will Howard late in the draft but neither he nor Skylar Thompson is expected to command the starter's reps among this group.  That familiarity with Pittsburgh and holdovers from the coaching staff during his previous stint should play into his favor He spent his first five seasons with the Steelers before leaving last offseason for the Titans.  Whether or not the Steelers have one more move planned or end up bringing in Rodgers they know they have at minimum a known commodity in Rudolph to get them through the season.  Thanks for visiting The move came as the Steelers continued to wait for Aaron Rodgers who they still don't have an answer from Rudolph could end up getting his chance to start for the Steelers this season rookie Will Howard and Skylar Thompson as their three QBs on the roster but it's hard to imagine they wouldn't give Rudolph a shot to be their guy for 2025 The former third-round pick has spent all but one season of his NFL career in the city of Pittsburgh "Being back in the city of Pittsburgh, it’s a sports town like no other. Any time we get to repay that, it’s always a fun opportunity," Rudolph told WTAE Many fans are rooting for Rudolph to get an opportunity this season after his last tenure ended on a high note who was replacing an injured Kenny Pickett toward the end of the 2022 season Rudolph earned the starting job over both players and remained their QB1 heading into the postseason who remains silent as he deals with personal issues off the field Maybe Rudolph does get that opportunity this season and it appears the quarterback is excited to be here he's back in the City of Champions and is loving that he's in a Steelers uniform once again Make sure to bookmark Steelers On SI to get all your daily Pittsburgh Steelers news, interviews, breakdowns and more! Combining the attention to detail usually found in niche higher-end labels with the accessibility of a mall brand has helped Buck Mason gain a loyal following from guys who live in jeans and tees to card-carrying members of the menswear Illuminati “Their color palette leans heavily into neutrals which makes layering and mixing incredibly straightforward It takes a lot of the guesswork out of building a cohesive wardrobe.” “We’re making tees the old way,” says brand co-founder Erik Allen Ford.Buck MasonFor the rare brands that can thread the needle Buck Mason has proven that staying the course pays off “We were fortunate to be able to fund the business primarily through our own savings and some early investors who shared our vision,” Koehn says “We worked for so many years with such little capital,” Ford adds “that when we finally were able to raise money because we liked running the business in a more instinctive way.” Despite this incremental approach to growth, the brand has been making big moves in recent years, rolling out a steady stream of collaborations with household names like Eddie Bauer and Lee, along with niche labels like Moonstar and Brycelands. Buck Mason bought a shuttered sewing factory and cloth mill in Mohnton as well as the brand’s Toughknit waffle-knit thermals “Eastern Pennsylvania was once an epicenter of American knitwear and we’ve been able to mix the knowledge we scraped together roaming downtown Los Angeles with a completely different but equally qualitative perspective out of Eastern Pennsylvania,” explains Ford we’re making tees the old way in the same region of the country where some of the best were made during the heyday of American knitwear.” The loafers didn’t require 50 revisions to get right, but they tick all the boxes of provenance, craftsmanship, and style now distinct to the Buck Mason canon. “The consistent thread is history,” says Ford. “What are the greatest products that have ever been made and how can they be made better?”
