2024) The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) today announced the completion of a $106 million infrastructure project in Maspeth
Queens that is the second of three that are creating a new drainage network through central Queens
The project also upgraded over a mile of water mains and replaced smaller
and successfully used micro-tunneling technology throughout large parts of it to minimize construction impacts during work
The project is the second in a series of three that is creating a major new drainage network through central Queens
And connects at several points to work that was previously completed by DDC in parts of 69th Street and Calamus Avenue in Middle Village
which installed 2,600 feet of new sewer using open trench construction
created excessive noise and disruptions for local residents and was halted early
with the remaining work moved to the recently completed project so that micro-tunneling could be employed
The third project is currently being designed in-house at DDC and is expected to start construction in mid-2026 with an estimated budget of roughly $80 million
That project will connect with the recently completed work at the Long Island Expressway and extend the new drainage system south to roughly Juniper Boulevard South
“This $106 million project is part of DEP’s commitment to building a new drainage network through Central Queens
which will alleviate the flooding caused by extreme weather,” said DEP Commissioner Rohit T
“We will continue to partner with DDC and DOT to invest in infrastructure upgrades that create more resilient communities
allowing us to better manage stormwater and protect our residents from climate change.”
“When the first project in this important new drainage system proved too disruptive to the community
changed its approach and used micro-tunneling instead
including in a very sensitive and busy area where crews tunneled under Queens Boulevard,” said NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Thomas Foley
plus the massive Southeast Queens Initiative
DEP and DOT are investing billions of dollars in Queens drainage and street upgrades.”
the project installed about 3,625 feet of new 96-inch diameter combined sewer plus about 900 feet of new box sewers up to 12 feet by 8 feet and about 300 feet of 84-inch HOBAS sewers
approximately 1,300 feet of combined sewer were replaced
About 5,500 feet of water mains up to 90 years old were replaced with new ductile iron pipes
One location where micro-tunneling was particularly effective is where the new sewer crosses under Queens Boulevard
Engineers estimated it would have taken months and many pedestrian and traffic disruptions to relocate underground utilities that are already in the street and then install the new sewer
micro-tunneling reduced construction time at the Queens Boulevard location from several months to roughly one week
Local catch basins and fire hydrants were upgraded and nearly 1.5 miles of local curbs were replaced along with sidewalks in many areas
The project also upgraded 47 pedestrian ramps to be ADA-compliant
and added 18 trees and a bike lane in the area
"The need to upgrade our sewer infrastructure is more pressing than ever,” said Councilmember Robert F
“Thanks to the City for completing the second phase of this massive sewer project
and I look forward to the third and final phase being completed in the coming years to finally give residents some relief."
"The families of Maspeth deserve to live free from flooding every time it rains
and this critical project will go a long way toward protecting homes and businesses across this community," said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr
"Thank you to our partners at DDC for getting this work done in a way that was as least disruptive to area residents as possible
and I look forward to completing the third and final phase of this project in the years to come."
"I am happy to see the completion of this infrastructure project here in Maspeth,” said Assemblymember Steven Raga
“It is incredibly important that our city's design meets the needs of residents
and this new drainage system and additional upgrades will better serve Queens residents
I appreciate DDC responsiveness to community concerns throughout the installation of this new system and look forward to the completion the third and final project in near future."

In a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Maspeth President and CEO Thomas Rudzewick called the new tech center "a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation
The new Maspeth Federal Savings Tech Center will be the primary workspace for employees in the mutual bank's information technology
"Here in this space we'll be developing and implementing leading-edge tech security measures including fraud prevention
rapid incident response and enhanced risk management," Rudzewick said in his opening remarks at the event
"It's an investment in the protection of our members' financial well-being and the safeguarding of their hard earned savings."

located in the New York City borough of Queens
"This state of the art facility in the heart of Maspeth is a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation
cybersecurity and community leadership," Rudzewick said
"Today's rapidly evolving digital landscape of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept
This center represents our pledge to proactively address the challenges that these technologies bring and harness their potential so that we are ensuring the financial safety and stability of our association's members and the communities that we serve."
Members of Maspeth Federal Savings' board of directors who attended the event believe that the new tech center is valuable for the community bank's future

2025 11:56 AM "We believe that this is a strong step towards the future of Maspeth Federal," said board member Michael Demetriou
"I think technology is forever rapidly moving," said board member Lisa Masone
"This will be a hub for all of our technology pieces to come together to solve any issues or come up with new project solutions that we need."
The new tech center building is located next door to the bank's loan center and across from the main branch office
the building is situated right in the heart of Maspeth
on a main road full of storefronts and small businesses and operating as a community-facing office space for a department that typically works behind the scenes

"Our cybersecurity is top notch in the industry
and now the neighborhood is going to see that this is what Maspeth Federal really invests in to protect their savings."
The space also brings together employees that were previously not working in the same environment
"The technology departments were spread across four offices in an adjacent building to the main office
and there was no connectivity between them," Rudzewick said
"This brings them all together so they can collaborate."
Rudzewick believes that this in-person collaboration will help Maspeth Federal to be a leader in the banking technology space
Monitors on the wall of the new tech center display a live cyber attack map and an IT alert dashboard.Melinda Huspen/American Banker "I think that technology and banking is something that is going to be and has been a focus for the last two decades," he said
"What I see coming forward is more of a reliance on technology: artificial intelligence
all of those pieces are critically important to not only be a part of but also be leaders in."
To support these technology initiatives, Maspeth Federal upgraded its core through a partnership with COCC. Rudzewick joined the COCC board of directors in October 2022
A 2024 ABA report surveying mostly community banks ranked COCC as number one in its list of top five core platform providers for banks
ranked by satisfaction scores from survey respondents
The Connecticut-based core provider earned a satisfaction mean average of 4.03 out of 5 in the survey
with 86% of surveyed banks who use COCC as their core provider responding that they were "extremely or somewhat likely to remain" with COCC and 81% saying they were "likely to recommend" the core provider
'We need to change cores,'" Rudzewick said
"We were frustrated with our other core at the time
so our mutuality was a match with COCC's cooperative basis
They are one of the most up-to-date technology companies and
and I think our website is just fantastic."

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today joined with the Trust for Public Land (TPL)
and others to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Green Infrastructure playground at P.S
By replacing the formerly asphalt playground with new green infrastructure
the new schoolyard will absorb 720,000 gallons of stormwater annually
helping to combat flooding in the area and reduce pollution in the East River and New York Harbor
“Extreme weather caused by climate change continues to bring more intense rainstorms that can sometimes overwhelm our sewers
so Green Infrastructure playgrounds like the one at P.S
229Q play a crucial role in combatting flooding and reducing pollution,” said New York City Chief Climate Officer and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Rohit T
“I’d like to thank our partners at The Trust for Public Land for their hard work in transforming this space
and all the students who helped design this wonderful new playground.”
DEP provided $1 million in funding for the new playground
and green infrastructure that will capture 720,000 gallons of stormwater annually
This will ease pressure on the area’s sewer system
and help improve the health of the East River and New York Harbor
The schoolyard will be accessible to both the school and wider community after school hours and on the weekends
TPL’s NYC Playgrounds Program has helped design and build 231 school and community playgrounds across the five boroughs
TPL is leading the movement to transform asphalt school grounds into vital green infrastructure through advocacy
resource sharing and by creating and evaluating important projects like the P.S
DEP’s nation-leading green infrastructure program has constructed nearly 14,000 green infrastructure installations including curbside rain gardens
All of these green installations intercept stormwater before it can drain into the sewer system
thereby creating additional capacity in the sewers
which helps to reduce flooding and any overflows into local waterways
Over the last 10 years DEP has invested $5.7 billion to upgrade all drainage systems
across the city and is planning to invest more than $10 billion for similar upgrades over the next decade
