MATAWAN -- Bill Morris bought his single-family home on Jackson Street in downtown Matawan in 2001
impressed with the neighborhood’s old-world charm
word that a four-story 46-unit apartment complex is in the works for the corner of Spring and Main streets — within view of his home and in the heart of the borough’s historic district — has him alarmed
“I don’t want it to look like Jersey City around here,” he said
“I didn’t buy a house in downtown Matawan to live in a big city
I bought a house in Matawan to live in a quaint town.”
which would be 50 feet high and designate eight of its units as affordable housing
is the result of a builder’s remedy lawsuit brought against Matawan by the property’s owner
an affiliate of real estate developer TG Acquisitions LLC
See which towns rose the fastest: Monmouth County average home price second highest in NJ
The lawsuit claimed Matawan was not meeting its affordable housing obligations as mandated by New Jersey law
and the apartment building is the fruit of the resulting settlement — though the matter is still pending in court
who is chair of the Matawan Historic Sites Commission
“We have a couple of vacant properties right now and developers are champing at the bit
it’s going to open up the floodgates to destroy everything on Main Street.”
Matawan administrator Ryan Michelson said that concern is unfounded
“This will ensure compliance with the state's affordable housing mandate while safeguarding the borough’s ability to control its housing plan and prevent future lawsuits from builders
regardless of location within the borough."
Burrowes Mansion: Musket shootout, cannon fire highlight reenactment of Matawan Revolutionary War raid
is a shuttered Santander Bank branch that was selected by the developer
“The borough reached a settlement with the developer of 160 Main
including a reduced unit count and modifications to the building's scale and design from the developer’s original plan,” Michelson said
“The outcome of this process remains uncertain
as it has not yet been finalized in court," Michelson continued
the decision will ultimately be guided by the constitutional obligation to prioritize affordable housing
Additional approvals may still be required from the governing body and the unified Planning and Zoning Board
but any action must adhere to the framework established in the agreement before the court.”
The parcel lies almost equidistant between Main Street’s two most historic sites — the 302-year-old Burrowes Mansion Museum (where a Revolutionary War skirmish occurred) and the Blue House
a 152-year-old French Second Empire Victorian House that is undergoing extensive restoration after years of neglect
Revolutionary fight, pacifist dentist: Wild Matawan history at Burrowes Mansion
“So you have places like that and you go 50 feet and you’re going to see a giant four-story apartment complex?” Morris said
when Main Street Matawan is not going to be a historical place to visit
It’s going to be a canyon of apartment complexes.”
Matawan musician: Inside the pressure-packed, music-filled world of a film-score composer
“We do have a designated historic district
and the building we’re talking about being built is in that district,” said Steven Russell
a member of Matawan’s borough council who serves as a liaison to the historic sites commission
“We have specific zoning for that portion of Main Street as a preservation district,” Roinestad said
The zoning would have to be changed to make way for the apartment building
“The constitutional obligation to provide affordable housing takes precedence over local zoning guidelines,” Michelson said
“Pursing a settlement agreement in this lawsuit is the responsible choice to avoid costly
prolonged litigation that wastes taxpayer dollars.”
Matawan's 'Blue House': Eyesore getting facelift, but at what cost to history?
Roinestad said it never should have come to this
“Part of the problem is that Matawan has kicked this can down the road for so many years – they could have designated an area as being for low-income housing and they never designated any area of town for that,” Roinestad said
“So it left us open to one of these builder-remedy lawsuits.”
Russell said the historic sites commission works with developers to make sure any building’s outside appearance “maintains that historic integrity” consistent with the other structures in the neighborhood — many of which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries
“We’re looking for an aesthetic that relies on brick and wood
with smaller windows that look older — not the big-picture windows that would not fit into a historic setting,” Russell said
“And not a long solid line of building but broken up into smaller buildings
'You had to be everyone's friend': Mayor of Aberdeen, Matawan's neighbor, stepping aside after four terms of growth
The artist’s renderings of the building by the Holmdel architectural firm Sonnenfeld & Trocchia show potential in meeting Russel’s first two guidelines
“The commission will have the opportunity to provide input on the development’s aesthetics so that it fits into the borough’s long-term vision for historic preservation,” Michelson said
but we want to see something appropriate for a historic district,” Roinestad said
“We don’t want to see something four stories high that looks like it came right out of Hoboken among these Victorian mansions on Main Street

The Matawan man is Sameh F. Kaldes, 43. He was arrested Friday by East Brunswick Police
and charged with two counts of attempted murder
According to an affidavit released by the Middlesex County Prosecutor
who lived in the apartment on Cranbury Circle in East Brunswick
He and she were involved in a legal battle: The woman said she was bitten by Kaldes' dog while delivering packages to his home on Morristown Road in Matawan in May 2024
The woman filed a police report for the dog bite
She also filed a civil lawsuit against Kaldes and a woman named Rita Kaldes on March 19 of this year
She is demanding they pay her medical bills from the dog bite
plus any additional expenses and legal fees
police say Kaldes went to the woman's East Brunswick apartment many times in the month of April: He would peer through the apartment windows
and on multiple occasions he shone a blue laser pointer inside
Police say he did this to try and provoke the woman to come outside so he could take photos of her
Kaldes fired a gun in the direction of the apartment
East Brunswick Police said they were called to the apartment each time for 911 calls of shots fired
Police said they located multiple bullet holes in the apartment's windows
a witness told police they observed a dark blue van or SUV fleeing the area on Cranbury Road
East Brunswick Police detectives investigating the case obtained video of a dark blue Mercedes parked in the shoulder of Cranbury Road
That car matched the same car parked in the driveway of Kaldes' Morristown Road home
An automated license plate reader (ALPR) camera stationed at the intersection of Cranbury Road and Ryders Lane in East Brunswick showed that Mercedes in the area of the apartment five times between April 2 and April 11
East Brunswick Police then found a video on Kaldes' Facebook page "that shows a blue laser pointer being activated inside a vehicle," read the affidavit
police say Kaldes drove to the apartment driving a different car
this time a blue Mazda bearing a license plate stolen out of Old Bridge on April 17
East Brunswick Police stopped the Mazda Friday and placed Kaldes under arrest
A search of the car revealed two .22 caliber spent bullet cartridges as well as one .22 caliber cartridge
Police say they also found a vile containing 6.6 grams of a white powder substance (suspected MDMA)
Police say they also found a blue laser pointer on Kaldes' person
In an interview with police after he was arrested
he told them he went to the woman's apartment complex numerous times and that he did shine a blue laser pointer inside her apartment
Kaldes is charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder for firing the gun
drug possession and one count of receiving stolen property for driving in the stolen blue Mazda

“I ran out and saw him across the street parked and yelling
The flag had been placed on a pole attached to the front of the store
He also has an American Flag on the other side

Police said Wojciak was taken into custody and charged with bias intimidation

opened his arms and tore the flag off the pole.”
which has been in business for seven years
Rizzuto said a similar incident occurred about two years ago and that person was also arrested
But he chose at that time not to make a big issue out of it publicly

Rizzuto’s supporters took to social media on Saturday and Sunday to promote his business and decry the hate with posts and messages of thanks for his ongoing aid to the community and devotion to local causes

But New Jersey has its own twist on the big ball drop: For the second year in a row
The transition from one year to the next is often marked by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” a Scottish folk song whose title roughly translates to “days gone by,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica and History.com
The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates back 8,000 years to ancient Babylonians
who made promises to return borrowed items and repay debts at the beginning of the new year
which was in mid-March when they planted their crops
the pagan gods would grant them favor in the coming year
they would lose favor with the gods. Many secular New Year’s resolutions focus on imagining new
The failure rate of New Year’s resolutions is about 80 percent
but a big one is they’re made out of remorse — for gaining weight
for example — and aren’t accompanied by a shift in attitude or a plan for coping with the stress and discomfort that comes with changing a habit or condition

'We love this wood paneling'Familiarity with the area from a previous movie shoot is what led the “Song Sung Blue” location team to scour Matawan for potential sites
“They wanted to shoot a scene in the garage,” Lacerre said
“They were in our office and saw the wood paneling in the office and said

“It’s wall-to-wall wood paneling,” Lacerre said
They saw that and this morphed into them taking over the place
Lacerre said the producers are compensating the shop for the three-day closure
“We scouted the location and loved it,” said Fernanda Reuel

OLD BRIDGE – While Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff glad-hands with donors at two New Jersey fundraisers this weekend
Emhoff spoke glowingly of his "typical Jersey suburban childhood," riding bikes around the neighborhood and going for Slurpees after Little League practice
everyone left their garage door open," he said
Emhoff’s upbringing resonates with me because that was my childhood
Our families both moved to Old Bridge when we were around the same age
I have friends who live in his old neighborhood
He played Little League and I played soccer
but I know the joy of a post-practice Slurpee
I've also spent the last four-years in a one-sided feud with Emhoff for one simple reason: The White House – and the Second Gentleman himself – insists he’s from Matawan
doesn't somebody look at this," said Richard Pucciarelli
president of the Madison-Old Bridge Historical Society
More: Kamala Harris' husband, Douglas Emhoff, has 'NJ in his veins'
I'm a bit of a fanatic about the places I care about
I take a lot of pride in the fact that my hometown has more Wawas (four) than McDonalds (two)
I brag about Metallica's shout-out to the "Old Bridge Metal Militia" on their first record
I'd love to talk about this with Emhoff himself
but his office hasn't responded to my interview request
I say Old Bridge...let's call the whole thing off.The Emhoff family moved to Old Bridge in 1968
when it was still called Madison Township (the name changed in 1975)
He played tennis and joined the ski club at Cedar Ridge (which merged with Madison Central in the 1990s to form Old Bridge High School)
But if you look for any mention of Emhoff’s actual hometown
there isn’t much beyond a 2019 tweet that references his time in “Matawan/Old Bridge” and a few passing references in news stories that refer to his time in “Matawan and Old Bridge,” as if he moved around a lot
When Michael Strahan went on a guided tour of Emhoff’s old haunts for a Good Morning America feature
They sat down for an interview at the Park Place Diner (also in Matawan)
when Emhoff pointed out the initials his brother scratched into a streetlight
That was in Old Bridge – even though they prominently featured a “welcome to Matawan” sign in the piece
As much as I’d like to attribute this to a massive
widescale cover-up to hide the truth of Emhoff’s origins from the American people
I don’t think there’s much of a mystery here
Emhoff grew up in the Lake Ridge neighborhood
less than 1,000 feet from the Matawan border
Every home there has a Matawan mailing address – it’s not that weird
Even the historical society and Old Bridge High School have Matawan mailing addresses
And I’ll begrudge him this: It seems like the Emhoff family spent a lot of time socializing beyond our shared hometown. They attended Temple Shalom in Aberdeen and
there wasn’t a whole lot to do in Old Bridge — still a relatively sleepy town a few years away from the development boom that would characterize it for the rest of its history
But that’s not enough of a reason to shrug off your hometown
It’s just as bad as the people who live in Neptune and Ocean Township but claim “Asbury Park."
It's almost as bad as the New Jerseyans who lie and – gasp
While the Old Bridge of my youth was a classic New Jersey “purple town,” it’s become solidly Republican over the last decade while Matawan has become more consistently blue
Former President Barack Obama carried Old Bridge in both 2008 and 2012
but former President Donald Trump won the town in both 2016 and 2020
A Democratic mayor hasn’t been elected in Old Bridge in more than 20 years
I see plenty of Trump-Vance lawn signs and even a flag for Three Percenters
an extremist anti-government militia group
I'm yet to see a Harris-Walz sign anywhere near my old neighborhood
Would the country's potential first-ever First Gentleman walking up to the microphone and saying "I'm from Old Bridge
More: Campaigning for wife Kamala Harris, Doug Emhoff embodies (and redefines) masculinity
"Nobody really talks about it, to tell you the truth. You probably know more about (Emhoff) than me," Old Bridge Mayor Debbie Walker said. "The most important thing to my son is that Metallica shouts out Old Bridge whenever they play a concert."
2 on my unofficial Old Bridge power rankings
nestled between Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Junot Diaz
He left platinum-selling singer Vitamin C and NFL all-pro cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick in the dust years ago
"Clerks" actor Brian O'Halloran and WWE Hall of Famer Sunny aren't even in the same stratosphere
And If Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov
It's about sticking up for each other," Emhoff said on Good Morning America last month

NJ — A Laurence Harbor man who worked as a door-to-door salesman was found guilty last week of stabbing a man to death in Ocean County
Michael Tsamas, 35, was found guilty of aggravated manslaughter in the death of Joseph Delgardio, 44, of Jackson Township, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer announced in this press release on March 26
Tsamas was working for a third-party company hired by Verizon to solicit customers on a door-to-door basis
Tsamas knocked on the door of Delgardio’s home in Jackson Township
Delgardio told Tsamas he was not interested
Delgardio confronted Tsamas on the street and a physical altercation ensued
Tsamas removed a dagger from his pocket and stabbed Delgardio in the neck
Jackson Township Police responded to the area of West Veterans Highway and Conor Road at 6:15 p.m
that evening for a 911 call that a man was lying in the roadway in a pool of blood
and responding officers found Delgardio with a severe wound to his neck
CPR and first aid from local firefighters was unsuccessful
and Delgardio was pronounced dead at the scene
Tsamas was taken into custody without incident at the scene
at which time he faces up to 30 years New Jersey state prison
and is separately accused of inappropriately touching a female patient
a cardiologist who owned and operated Matawan-Aberdeen Heart & Medical Center
which used to be located on Main Street in Matawan (the practice closed this January)
The State Board of Medical Examiners voted to permanently revoke Dr
Panezai's medical license because he was convicted in a $1.9-million healthcare fraud scheme
Panezai is also facing unrelated allegations that he engaged in criminal sexual contact with a female patient in 2018
This was announced Friday by NJ Attorney General Matt Platkin and the Division of Consumer Affairs. The public can read the consent order to permanently revoke his medical license
Panezai has also been charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual contact against a female patient
That criminal charge stems from an alleged incident with the female patient in September 2018
On April 11 of this year, Dr. Panezai pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of knowingly and intentionally executing a scheme to defraud healthcare benefit programs
He is facing up to 10 years in federal prison
The AG said Panezai submitted "numerous false claims" to health insurers: He submitted the false claims for office visits that either never occurred, or he exaggerated the length of the office visits. Panezai kept the illicit profits, which totaled more than $1.9 million, federal prosecutors said in this press release in April
Panezai said he stopped practicing medicine in New Jersey last January
and he closed his Matawan cardiology practice on January 31
He agreed to permanently retire from practice in the state
with his retirement to be deemed a permanent revocation
In compliance with the Board’s regulations by November 4
Panezai must provide the Board with written notification as to where his patient records are secured and how patients may obtain them
2025 at 9:58 am ETA rendering of how one of the four-story apartment buildings will look
Planning Board)Where The Green at Old Bridge will be located
NJ — Plans have been revived for The Green at Old Bridge
a massive apartment complex of 20 apartment buildings (529 apartments total
plus two additional office buildings and a parking garage off Matawan Road
The developer is Alfieri-Old Bridge Associates
All documents and plans for The Green at Old Bridge have been submitted to the Old Bridge Planning Board, and can be viewed here
The Planning Board will be asked to approve the first phase of the project at their meeting next Thursday night
It will be brought up for a first vote and public discussion at that time
The Green at Old Bridge will be located on a 94-acre property on Matawan Road
bordering the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen
directly across from the on/off ramps for the Parkway north
The property is expected to bring in $9.8 million a year in property taxes to the town of Old Bridge (page 14)
The development will also bring more students into Old Bridge public schools
the increase in school students was determined to be "negligible" by that Community Impact Statement
and the amount of taxes generated by The Green will far offset any additional costs to the school district
The Green is estimated to bring in 406 preschool-aged children and 72 school-aged children
according to predictions from the Community Impact Statement
106 will be set aside as affordable housing
is trying to ensure that at least 13 percent (14 units) of those affordable apartments will be designated as very-low-income
reserved for households that make 30 percent or less of the New Jersey median income
The developer also plans to construct one 4-story office building, one 2-story office building, a separate clubhouse (see renderings of the clubhouse here
page 16; it will have an indoor gym) and outdoor pool
plus a three-story parking garage and outdoor parking lots
there will be 2,171 parking spaces (132 outdoors
It is not immediately known if the parking garage will be available for use by the public
The developer will also build one large public green in the site's western portion
several "neighborhood parks" in the site's northern portion and one "neighborhood park" in the site's southeast portion
four stormwater basins and a sanitary pump station on the property
Here are the boundaries of The Green at Old Bridge:
Get the full proposal here: #12-2022P Alfieri-Old Bridge Associates, LLC
MyCentralJersey reports the Old Bridge Planning Board first rejected The Green in 2022; in response
Alfieri argued the town's denial was illegal
as Old Bridge is required to have a certain number of affordable housing units in town
and The Green would have affordable housing
Alfieri argued Old Bridge was shirking its affordable housing quota
Such a lawsuit is what some in New Jersey call "builders' remedy" suits: Critics argue developers use affordable housing quotas from the state to force towns to approve lucrative developments
counter that it's important to have affordable housing in New Jersey
