will play four more scheduled concerts but cancels remainder of 2025 run
the US pop singer whose career stretches back to 1956
has announced his retirement from performing live
A statement posted to Facebook reads: “As many of you may already be aware
Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year
it’s with sincere regret that due to Mr Mathis’s age and memory issues which have accelerated
we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts.”
“Johnny Mathis and his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis fans worldwide for your continued love and support of his music
had a number of concerts booked for 2025 but will only perform four more scheduled dates
That show will bring a remarkable performing career to an end
Mathis is regarded as one of America’s great romantic balladeers
and his 1976 UK Christmas No 1 When a Child Is Born
The last is one of Mathis’s many festive classics which remain popular today
including versions of Sleigh Ride and It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Mathis was once the record holder for the album with the most weeks spent on the US chart: his compilation Johnny’s Greatest Hits
which was on the chart for 490 weeks between 1958 and 1968
Six of his albums became platinum sellers and he had 10 Top 10 albums in a row during the late 1950s and early 60s
Pop fashions changed and his crooning style fell out of favour come the middle of the 60s
but Mathis’s core fans stood by him while he maintained an extraordinary work rate
recording 53 studio albums between 1960 and 1990
The mid to late 70s were another successful phase for him
with his Christmas No 1 plus a US chart-topping duet with Deniece Williams – Too Much
Too Late – and a deft embrace of the era’s disco sound
A lost album from this period made with Nile Rodgers
Mathis’s most recent studio album is Christmas Time Is Here
he spoke about how the quality of his health would influence the length of his career
“It revolves around whether or not you’re physically able and in good health,” he said
“That’s the most important thing because you won’t feel like doing anything if you’re not healthy
The vocals cords are flesh and blood so anything can happen to them … You take care of the thing that got you to the dance.”

Ecclesiastes 3:11 haunts the human mind that pretends to be secular:
yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end
those that refuse to acknowledge any religious or spiritual basis for human life and our world — may attract those aching to suppress the truth that God has made plain in his creation (Romans 1:18–20)
Secular life does not prove satisfying — emotionally or intellectually
Secular “believers” may enjoy the initial thrill of feeling free from divine oversight and the wages of sin
But the wishful thinking of cosmic rebels proves empty sooner or later
we were made for him and cannot get around or beyond his purposes
no matter how much sin pressures us to flee
While Christians in this generation may feel a new acuteness in secular pressures
the Christian faith has always required the look of faith to the unseen
Some forces seem new; the fundamental realities of the Christian life remain unchanged
Long have we been a people with a different kind of vision
we have a different kind of vision than our unbelieving age
Believers the world over may dispute or variously read a number of passages
but every stripe of church and tribe of Christians confesses
“We look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen” (2 Corinthians 4:18)
and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17)
And oh how counter-secular are such invisibilities
our invisible faith — arising in the inner
unseen person — comes from hearing the audible yet invisible word: the good news about Christ
And that through an unseen Helper we call the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:5)
we live in this world and look at seen things all day
We are bombarded with sights and their accompanying sensations
and now all the more with glittering pixels
we do not look to the things that are seen to get our ultimate bearings about reality
Has not this faith in the unseen been the legacy of our heroes
Noah’s faith received God’s word “concerning events as yet unseen” and moved him to build the ark to save his household (Hebrews 11:7)
“not knowing where he was going,” stretching by faith to see what he could not yet see (Hebrews 11:8)
“for he endured as seeing him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27)
And Christ himself (both the focus of our faith and our supreme exemplar) endured the cross “for the joy that was set before him” — that is
not a joy at hand he could see and reach for
but a yet unseen joy in the distance that would lead him to and through the visible and sensible horrors of crucifixion
and all the way to his Father’s right hand (Hebrews 12:2)
Even if obstacles to this kind of sight are especially pronounced in our day of secular assumptions and pixelated visuals
the life of faith has always run against this grain: looking through and beyond what we can see with our physical eyes to yet unseen rewards we taste even in the present
“Faith is the [foretaste] of things hoped for
the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1)
not just believing that he exists but “that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6)
Faith hears and embraces his audible-yet-invisible word and lives in light of it
we have a different kind of mindset than our world’s
Faith in the unseen God frees our minds from the prison of “the immanent frame” — that small slice of reality that we can see
Christian faith liberates us from the earthly mindedness into which we are born as natural humans
helps us to see through and behind and beyond the phenomena of our world
he also makes us increasingly spiritually minded
Even in an era of oppressive earthly mindedness that claims so many as its victims
we inhabit the glorious freedom of Colossians 3:2
setting our minds on the things that are above
and our true life is now hidden with him in God (Colossians 3:1)
and we not “seek the things that are above
seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1)
Earthly things rightly cross and occupy our minds every day
we learn to set and reset our minds elsewhere
the old self and its practices (Colossians 3:5–9)
and put on the new self in Christ and its fruit (Colossians 3:10–17)
the world will have its way with our minds and their frame
We might still read our Bibles and frequent churches and even speak in pulpits; we might still quote verses and expound Christian doctrines
Have our world’s terms and ends infected and seized our cast of mind
our world can’t help but fill the void with politics
If our own hearts have been captured by this mindset
our dreams and greatest joys will look very much like the world’s
and very little like the different kind of joy on offer in Christ
we have a different kind of joy than the world’s — a joy that flows from our different vision and mindset
As we see the unseen God (vision) and see our world through his eyes (mindset)
our joy rises far beyond the joy rooted merely in this world we can see
the world has tasted and talks about a kind of “happiness” — one that is fleeting
ours is a different sort of happiness — one that is lasting and deep and soul-satisfying
It is rooted in God and expands through loving others and doing them good
Our happiness is the kind of joy that sustains us in suffering
and gets us in the end to the great reward that is God himself in Christ
And stunningly, in this different kind of joy, we do not diverge from the one who made and upholds our world, and who will decide our eternity, but in Jesus our joy is at one with the very purposes of God. “The end and goal of all things,” says John Piper
“is the glory of God reflected in the gladness of his people in God.” Isaiah spoke of this different kind of joy seven centuries before Christ when he said Christ’s people will “go out in joy and be led forth in peace
and it shall make a name for the Lord” (Isaiah 55:12–13)
we turn our focus to the unseen world with a three-part structure: (1) the unseen world within
Our focus will be reclaiming our felt sense of these unseen realities: the human soul

KRIS 6 will not be identifying any individuals involved pending the district's investigations
“The focus should be on the game,” White emphasized
“You've got two great groups of kids from good schools working hard

The altercation occurred during the fifth inning of the game
"It was a battle for the district championship," White added about the significance of Tuesday's match-up

Some concerns being raised by residents over a Mathis coach who is seen grabbing the Taft player
a review of reactions on social media are in the belief that the coach had tripped
we haven't taken any disciplinary action against any coach or player
We typically wait until we’ve fully investigated.” He anticipated inquiries regarding the coach’s actions but stressed that all stakeholders are under scrutiny
KRIS 6 reached out to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) to see if it was conducting its own independent investigation into the incident:
Both districts aim for a thorough investigation
White expressed his desire for the community’s focus to shift back to the students’ achievements rather than the altercation
“Everyone is disappointed and wishes things were different
and we want them to succeed as they move toward the playoffs.”

The Amazon founder is one of the financial forces behind the Slate truck

Slate Auto is pitching the new truck as "minimalist design with DIY purpose," an attempt to "create a new category of vehicle with a huge focus on personalization." The ideas behind the truck are a "rolling rejection of the current

Elon Musk has "made big promises" about a $25,000 budget EV from Tesla but has repeatedly pushed back a production date
Slate's low price point makes it a "potential Tesla killer."
Some caution is needed. New EV truck companies that promise to "revolutionize or disrupt the industry" have "come and gone," said CarBuzz
But Slate seems to be offering something different: If you "just need a runaround little electric truck" for chores and getting around town
If you want something different — to add that radio
or transform the two-seater into a five-seater — the vehicle is designed to be "infinitely upgradable and customizable." If it works
Slate could serve as a "wrecking ball" in the EV industry
His companies have a history of union-busting and have been accused of anti-competitive practices
Bezos already profits from the "very sort of customers looking for more affordable vehicles." That makes Slate's success discomfiting: It would further "enrich one of the wealthiest people on earth."
Slate announced on April 29 that it will build the vehicle at a former printing plant in Indiana, said Business Insider
The first deliveries are expected near the end of 2026
The truck arrives at a "volatile time" during America's trade wars and President Donald Trump's antipathy to the industry
But its plans to build in Indiana may insulate it from the "turmoil facing other startups and established automakers."

A Fort Bliss soldier was defending himself and a 6-year-old boy when he was wounded in a street gunfight that killed another soldier in a far East El Paso neighborhood
28 outside a house party at a short-term rental home on Setting Sun Drive
What occurred on Setting Sun Drive and who was the aggressor differ significantly in the versions described by Mathis' attorney and the police and prosecution
his defense attorney Brian Livingston said at a teleconference bond hearing on April 2
“He was lawfully protecting himself as well as (the) 6-year-old ..
he considers him his stepson," Livingston said
explaining that the child is the son of Mathis' girlfriend
Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Tarango at the hearing countered that Mathis and another shooter were the aggressors and Smith was the one protecting himself
An El Paso police investigation alleges that Mathis and another shooter — identified only as "Slimy" — killed Smith in a confrontation between soldiers
At least one witness claimed that after the initial shots were fired
"Slimy" stood over Smith and shot him several times while Smith was on the ground
An autopsy by the El Paso County medical examiner found Smith had eight gunshot wounds: two to the head
five to the torso and one on the left thigh
a criminal complaint filed by a homicide detective stated
When interviewed at El Paso Police Department Headquarters after being released from the hospital
Mathis told detectives that he was shot at the location but denied having to do anything with the shooting
a complaint affidavit filed by the police detective stated
The EPPD Public Information Office did not respond to questions regarding whether "Slimy" has been identified and is sought by police
Mathis remains jailed at the El Paso County Jail Annex under a $1.5 million bond
Magistrate Judge Antonio Aun "split" the bond on April 2
making it a $600,000 cash/surety bond and a $900,000 personal recognizance bond (which requires no money)
the judge ordered the conditions of his release to include drug and alcohol testing and no possession of firearms and ammunition outside of his employment with the Army
Smith, who was affectionately known as "Quan" by his family, was a native of Chicago, an obituary stated
He was the father of two sons and was passionate about writing poetry and rap music
Army in 2022 and was with the 1st Armored Division
"Quan possessed a radiant smile that illuminated any room
and friend was further enhanced by his pure heart," the obituary stated
More: El Paso police seeking information on suspicious death, case being investigated as murder

Army assigned to the 32nd Army Air and Missile Command at Fort Bliss
his attorney and a Fort Bliss spokesman said
and attended the University of Toledo before joining the military
He served his country," Livingston said of Mathis
The complaint document mentions that other active-duty U.S
Army soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss were involved in the case
An investigation began after El Paso police responded to multiple calls about numerous shots fired at 11:58 p.m
Smith was found dead on a sidewalk from multiple gunshot wounds
the complaint affidavit filed by a police detective stated
Police soon learned that Mathis had been dropped off with a gunshot wound at El Paso Emergency Room East
Livingston claimed that a confrontation between Smith and Mathis stemmed from a woman who was in a relationship with Smith but was seeing Mathis on the side
"My client (Mathis) had no romantic feelings toward this woman," Livingston added
Livingston claimed that Mathis arrived with his girlfriend's 6-year-old son and went to ask Smith about a supposed threat that Smith had made
"The decedent (Smith) came to my client’s car
My client then backed away from that vehicle," Livingston said
Smith then allegedly made "aggressive comments," and “he shot my client before my client ever pulled his firearm."
blindly fired and hid behind a vehicle," Livingston said
The person known as "Slimy" then shot and "finished" Smith
"I don’t know if it's even clear if my client even hit the decedent
and then he hid behind a vehicle across the street."
Livingston claimed that one of the witnesses was Smith's girlfriend and that after the shooting
she grabbed Smith's gun and hid it inside the party house
The investigation found there were multiple shots fired by Smith
Mathis and "Slimy." Several projectiles were collected from nearby homes
and investigators collected spent bullet casings from three different calibers of firearms
adding that it appeared to be "a very planned and coordinated attack on the victim" involving people experienced with firearms
A witness told police that Smith was confronted by two men with firearms as soon as he arrived and got out of his vehicle
Smith appeared confused about the reason for the confrontation
Tarango said that Mathis and "Slimy" fired at Smith
who returned fire and likely shot and wounded Mathis
blood evidenceInvestigators obtained video showing Mathis' maroon-colored Chrysler 300 and a tan-colored Jaguar XF sedan belonging to another soldier departing the area
Army Criminal Investigation Division assisted El Paso police with the investigation

TAFT
Texas – A South Texas high school softball coach and her mother were arrested after allegedly assaulting an opposing player and her mom
The incident happened on April 15 during a district softball championship game between Taft High School and Mathis High School in Taft
an altercation began in the fifth inning after a Mathis softball player used explicit language toward a Taft softball player
The Mathis softball player reportedly told the opposing player: “You ain’t s*it b**ch
get the f**k out of here before I beat your a**,” the affidavit said
The Taft player reacted by shoving the Mathis player
prompting coaches and players from both teams to intervene and separate them
things escalated when Mathis softball coach Briana Cruz “ran directly” at the Taft player and tackled her
The opposing coach removed Cruz from the player
Cruz was later arrested for assault causing bodily injury
Another altercation occurred in the bleachers between Cruz’s mother
and the mother of the Taft player whom Cruz allegedly assaulted
According to another affidavit obtained by KSAT
the Taft player’s mother was yelling at Cruz for tackling her daughter
Deleon approached her and began to punch her in the head repeatedly
Bystanders and the opposing head coach of Taft High School separated the two women
Deleon was later arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury
According to KRIS 6 News, Cruz posted a $3,500 bond three days after her initial arrest on April 15

With the 2025 NFL Draft in the rearview mirror and undrafted free agent signings all but done, the focus for the Pittsburgh Steelers has shifted to rookie minicamp invites. After reports of South Carolina linebacker Debo Williams and Rhode Island TE/WR Tommy Smith receiving invites
That would be William & Mary standout receiver Hollis Mathis
who is a Pittsburgh-area native as a Penn Hills High School graduate
Mathis’ invite to Steelers’ rookie minicamp was shared by his agency, LA Sports Group (@LASportsGroup) on Instagram.
Mathis is a versatile athlete who played quarterback
running back and receiver at William & Mary
He made the switch to receiver full time for the 2024 season and put up a strong season
hauling in 52 passes for 602 yards and three touchdowns
Hollis Mathis measures in at 6013, 174 pounds with 9 3/8-inch hands, 32 3/4-inch arms, a 77 1/8-inch wingspan and clocked a 4.59 40-yard dash with a 1.59 10-yard split. He also recorded a 36.5-inch vertical, a 10’10” broad jump, a 4.43 short shuttle and a 6.90 3-cone, according to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler.
He finished his college career with 87 receptions for 1,005 yards and five touchdowns
Mathis also recorded 260 carries for 1,091 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns and 1,716 passing yards
10 touchdowns and four interceptions on 126-of-251 passing
though most of that came in 2019 when he threw for 976 yards
Mathis is just one of two players in college football history to achieve that mark
Penn Hills alum Hollis Mathis has made HISTORY at the D1 level at William and Mary
He is the 2nd player in CFB History to throw for 1,000 yards
A WPIAL round of applause for Hollis 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 pic.twitter.com/0fj7IKObZp

Mathis was a full-time QB at Penn Hill High School

He never thought of transferring to a bigger program
sticking it out at William & Mary and graduating with a degree in kinesiology and health sciences in 2023

Locked in a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning of a district game between Mathis and Taft at Taft High School
tensions were understandably high between the two clubs
But what was about to happen is tougher to comprehend
recording the out on a close play at the plate
As Mathis’ catcher and Taft’s runner began untangling themselves
one person wearing white can be seen on video racing from the Mathis bench
now identified as Mathis coach Briana Cruz
appeared to put hands on the Taft player before both fell near home plate
Here's the video, courtesy of Corpus Christi Cronica:
NEW ANGLE REVEALS TRUTH: Mathis Coach Briana Cruz Didn’t Trip — She GRABS Taft Player by the Waist and TAKES HER DOWN
Fans can be heard on the video shouting toward the field
“You’re a coach!” and “That’s a coach!” as the field erupted into further chaos
Cruz formerly played four years at Mathis before going on to play collegiately at Texas A&M International
where she was rostered as a junior in 2021
a coach appears to walk back toward the field and pick something off the ground before the video ends
According to a report by Corpus Christi Cronica
“Now the Taft player and her mother are in the emergency room,” the outlet posted
and her mother fought the victim’s mom after a threat to press charges.”
The report didn’t specify who the “victim” was in the case
or whether Cruz’s mother was also accused of fighting
Neither the Taft player nor her mother were named in the report
The Cronica did quote the player’s mother as saying
“I want Coach Briana Cruz to never be allowed to coach again.”
The mother reportedly confirmed to the outlet that her daughter suffered back and neck injuries during the skirmish and that both were treated in the ER
It is not known if any players or coaches were ejected
but there were no immediate changes to either lineup after the event and the game resumed
the incident is currently being investigated by Taft ISD school police and said the mother intends to press charges “to the full extent of the law.”
not everyone was ready to pile on Cruz or point fingers at the coach
as many claimed she simply tripped while trying to break up a fight
Many also pointed to the heightened sense of fear some are feeling after a student was recently stabbed to death at a track and field event in Frisco
once the dust settled it wound up going into extra innings – and even had another play at the plate when a Taft runner was caught trying to steal home – before Mathis prevailed 8-5 in 10 innings
