Reilly MATTYDALE, N.Y. — An almost empty Kmart Plaza in Mattydale is harboring sadness from those in the community. “This used to be great, I used to call it the hub of the universe because you could walk and get anything you needed,” said Dianne Bourgon. The Kmart Plaza has lost many of its staples. Beloved restaurant Zebb’s is set to close its doors this weekend. Dianne and her husband Peter have been going to Zebb’s for as long as they can remember. Peter said the closure only adds to the many stores leaving the area including those at the Northern Lights Plaza also located in Mattydale. Raymour and Flanigan bought the plaza, but so far has not said which retailers it has lined up. State Senate candidate and current Town of Salina Supervisor Nick Paro is sad about the closing of Zebb’s but is hopeful for a new future for the plaza. Paro said Kmart Plaza is about to go up for auction in a few weeks, the goal is to see a mixed use of the plaza. As of now, Paro said there are three potential buyers for Kmart Plaza. “Those two plazas are in the very baby stages of transition to what I think are going to be transformative and very positive for that community,” said Paro. “The Town of Salina made a big investment. We’re putting a 14,000 community center just up the road from it. I can promise you, we wouldn’t be doing that if I wasn’t working so diligently with these private developers on the type of investment that they’re about to put into the Mattydale community.” Former Marcy Corrections Officer pleads guilty to manslaughter in case involving the death of an inmate in December 2024.
