(KATV) — UPDATE (1/13/25): Arkansas State Police (ASP) has released the identity of the individual killed in the officer-involved shooting in Maumelle The man has been identified as 34-year-old Benjamin Prowell of Conway After being struck by the officers' service firearms Arkansas State Police (ASP) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is currently investigating the incident and will be preparing a case file to present to the Pulaski County Prosecutor who will determine if the use of deadly force is consistent with Arkansas law ORIGINAL: The Maumelle Police Department says that one person is dead following an officer-involved shooting that took place on Saturday afternoon Police say that they responded to a call reporting an emotionally distressed person armed with a knife on Crystal Hill Road at 2 p.m Officers say they engaged the individual for 45 minutes before the situation "deteriorated." Police responded to a call around 2 p.m. on Crystal Hill Road regarding an emotionally disturbed individual who was reportedly armed with a knife. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the person holding the knife and displaying erratic behavior. Officers attempted to communicate with the individual for nearly an hour in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation. However, when the person advanced toward the officers, a Taser was deployed, but it was ineffective. The individual continued approaching officers in a threatening manner, prompting them to open fire. The person was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. No officers were injured during the incident. The Arkansas State Police has been called in to investigate the shooting, as is standard protocol.
