TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield gave a warm welcome to first-round draft pick Emeka Egbuka
The day after Egbuka's arrival in Tampa on Friday
treated the former Ohio State wide receiver and his family to brunch
"He immediately asked me for Emeka's number and he said, 'When is he getting in?'" Licht told Adam Schein on Tuesday
"And he came in -- we flew in Emeka and his family on Friday
Baker and his wife picked them all up and took them out to brunch just to show 'em around and get to know them
And he probably doesn't want me even telling anybody that
He does that under the radar without wanting any fanfare for it."

"[He's a] Heisman winner. There are not too many people who have that achievement and he's done great things as well in the league. He's had successful receivers all the way around him so I'm just excited to be able to learn and to grow with him at the helm of everything I'm doing [with] a seasoned vet like he is," Egbuka said of joining Mayfield in Tampa
He texted me here shortly after I got drafted so it's just good to know that he's excited with the pick as well and I just can't wait to get to work."
Egbuka and his fellow rookies will hit the field for Bucs rookie minicamp May 9-10

Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield is gearing up for his eighth season in the National Football League, and his third with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Both of Mayfield's seasons with the Bucs have produced career years
with 2024 standing as his best NFL showing yet
The former OU legend and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns with a 71.4% completion percentage last year
Those numbers put him among the best quarterbacks in the league
He had a 106.8 QBR and also ran for 378 yards and three touchdowns
Despite losing offensive coordinator Liam Coen
Mayfield is primed to repeat or even improve on those lofty numbers this year
One of the biggest reasons for Mayfield's success in Tampa has been the wide receiver group he's been able to work with over the last couple of seasons
And as good as that room has been with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin leading the way over the last two years
it looks like it'll be even better in 2025
Touchdown Wire's Camber Michelle outlined just how dynamic Mayfield's WRs are heading into the season
as the Bucs used their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka to get even better at the position
"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers boast one of the NFL’s most exciting wide receiver groups heading into the 2025 season," Michelle said
the Bucs’ receiver room is both deep and strategically built for now and the future
General Manager Jason Licht’s bold draft moves and savvy contract management have created a unit that’s a nightmare for opposing defenses
Leading the way for the Buccaneers are Mike Evans and Chris Godwin
two players who have spent their entire careers in Tampa
They form one of the best WR duos in the entire league when healthy
and Mayfield has displayed chemistry with both of them
Tampa Bay's offense is very difficult to slow down when Evans and Godwin are at their best
But it's a couple of younger pieces that really have a chance to take the WR room from good to great for Mayfield in 2025 and beyond
"The addition of first-round pick Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka (No
2025) hints at a future-thinking approach," Michelle said
on a four-year rookie deal (with a fifth year option) worth approximately $10.6 million
While his immediate role may be limited behind Evans and Godwin
his selection ensures a seamless transition if either veteran departs or becomes injured
Egbuka’s value lies in his high ceiling and cost-controlled contract
emerged as one of the biggest steals in his rookie year
McMillan’s $1 million cap hit in 2025 is a bargain for his downfield threat and growing chemistry with Baker Mayfield
His eight touchdown grabs ranked second among 2024 rookies
and he’s poised to compete for a larger role
adds electric speed and punt-return ability
His cap hit and potential as a gadget player make him a low-risk
Michelle also noted that the Buccaneers have other players who stepped up last season when Evans and Godwin were injured
That includes Trey Palmer and Mayfield's old teammate from his college days in Norman
They are also solid at the tight end position with Cade Otton
boast two talented young running backs in Bucky Irving and Rachaad White
and return all five starters on the offensive line
Tampa Bay clearly believes in Mayfield holding the reins of the offense
and have confidence that the unit will soar again
even with Josh Grizzard taking over after Coen left to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars
As Mayfield enters the second season of a three-year deal
his team is doing all it can to set their quarterback up for continued success with a very deep group of wide receivers and an offense that looks like it'll be very tough to stop

Steward and trustee Thomas Bright and long-time member Benetta Jones said the St

James AME Church in Mayfield retained its original cornerstone with the establishment date of 1868

according to steward and trustee Thomas Bright
— After sustaining heavy damage in the Dec
students from the Murray State University history department documented the status of this extensive process as the church nears the final stages of reconstruction
Having lost his aunt and fellow congregant in the disaster
Bright said the church community encountered substantial tragedy
but it will define itself by resilience in shared faith moving forward
The roof was blown out and the sides were caved in
so there was just trauma on top of trauma,” Bright said
and we knew that God would provide a way for us to get back on our feet and rise to become better than what we were before.”
After some complications in FEMA and other funding
Bright said a major emblem of hope arrived when the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded the church a $100,000 grant for revitalization
“The head cornerstone said the church was established in 1868
but the Murray State University History found records that date the church as far back as 1861,” Bright said
“We’ve always been an active community church
We are small in numbers but great in hearts.”
Bright highlighted the importance of restoring a long-standing community pillar
James AME is the oldest African American church in Graves County
He added that the church features a wall mural from nationally renowned artist Helen LaFrance
James AME is vital not only to the African American population but also Mayfield in general
as the legacy of perseverant strength is valuable today
“You can’t change history or erase it as if it didn’t happen
it got burned a couple times like so many Black churches did during that time,” Bright said
“But our church has always been a voice for education and rights advocacy
James AME has relied on camaraderie in adversity
he said Mayfield Church of the Nazarene and other local congregations opened their doors to St
James AME for joint services and fellowship
“Those who never lost faith and hope still participated,” Bright said
“We keep going because the church is more than just a building
Benetta Jones said the congregation’s spirit was indescribably vibrant during its height
but the disaster and other factors have caused membership to decline
She said the church will hopefully experience a resurgence after reconstruction
and we loved singing and hearing the preaching
and then the tornado just took the church out
We have faith that we’re going to build our church back up
Jones said the congregation’s close collaboration in rebuilding illustrated the power of unity
she said churches promote tight-knit bonds in the community that withstand hardship
She said all the local churches provided critical aid to Mayfield in the aftermath of the tornado
delivering supplies or offering facilities
but you just have to look to others to push forward.”

After back-to-back division titles and playoff appearances under Baker Mayfield
and after keeping most of the roster together
Now, we aren't saying they will be in Super Bowl contention
but what about contention in the NFC?
CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan, in his latest NFC rankings, has the Bucs at No. 6, with the much-fancied Green Bay Packers (5) and Los Angeles Rams (4) ahead of them
It's no surprise the Bucs remain the favorite to win the NFC South and make the playoffs for the sixth straight year."
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) greets Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (6)
The Buccaneers will welcome the praise for being a favorite in the NFC South
but that is the bare minimum for Todd Bowles' team
Having won a playoff game and then pushed the Detroit Lions to the brink in 2023, to then follow that up with a one-and-done performance last season with a loss to the Washington Commanders
the focus is not on the regular season for Tampa Bay
And that is a big leap for a franchise that is not often mentioned in such a manner
maybe the 2025 season is when we see the Buccaneers take that next step in their evolution with Mayfield
Winning the division year after year is fine
but players and fans want Super Bowls.
but they have a roster capable of making every team in football nervous

The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice confirmed Tuesday that its investigation uncovered sexual misconduct

It follows investigations into alleged misconduct
The DJJ confirmed Tuesday that its investigation uncovered sexual misconduct
Five Mayfield employees in total were disciplined after the investigation
Another employee retired from his position and the last was demoted
The state department said its investigation substantiated several problems at the Mayfield facility
a reporter with the Lexington Herald-Leader
filed an open records request to obtain the details of the investigation
Hundreds of documents detail several sexual encounters between employees inside the facility
One instructor also exposed the juveniles to a topless video of a female counselor
An employee also orchestrated a fight club
referred to as “running 30's.” The boys were allowed to fight for fun
Cheves said experts believe the issues arise from juvenile detention centers being understaffed and undertrained
"They've cut the staffing just in the last few years
They give them what they call on-the-ground training
the Department of Juvenile Justice Academy in Louisville
There have also been several escapes reported from the center in the last two years
Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden said his department assisted in locating two juveniles who escaped to Grand Rivers in January 2024
He told reporters the facility is not safe for the juveniles or the surrounding community
you can walk in and walk right out,” Hayden said
Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Randy White released the following statement regarding the investigation
“As soon as these serious allegations were reported through our Ombudsman
individuals who are employed make daily decisions on whether they will adhere to their workplace policies and training
and if they choose to engage in misconduct
they will need to find employment somewhere other than the Department of Juvenile Justice
I have been committed to removing those who wish harm on our juveniles and facilities
We have no tolerance for actions such as what took place at the Mayfield Youth Development Center and will not allow employees to remain employed if they chose to conduct in similar behavior.”
He said he's working to improve security and employee training at the 27 facilities across Kentucky
This is the most recent local case of misconduct within the juvenile justice department. In March, former McCracken Juvenile Justice Guard Tyler Lynn was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal abuse
Department of Justice began probing the DJJ in 2024
for possible civil rights abuses of children in state custody following several recent stories of misconduct

Richard (Dick) Kenneth Mayfield returned home on January 27
1932 on the kitchen table in a rock home in Farmington
He was married for time and all eternity to his childhood sweetheart
he met and married Mary Diane Benson on May 26
Dick may best be remembered for having the finest garden in Farmington
He loved working in the dirt and everything he touched grew and produced amazing food
His garden has fed half of Farmington and the produce has been transported around the globe
There was no better day in Dick’s life than when he was rototilling
Dick loved his family and was always believing
He had to be the person most willing to look past people’s faults and love them despite themselves
He was not judgmental and preferred to look upon each person’s heart and what they hoped to become
He believed they would be what they wanted to be
Playing cards was another hobby Dick enjoyed
but never for money – only for the fun of interacting with others or for helping them learn
Grandpa was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 67 great children.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield knows this well. As a former top overall pick for the Cleveland Browns back in 2018
Mayfield once had the hopes of an entire franchise on his back.
he was kicked to the curb by the Browns and bounced around the league in several backup roles
After finding a new home with the Buccaneers
Mayfield has learned from what he has previously experienced to be an even better leader now.
The latest example of this came after the first round selection of wide receiver Emeka Egbuka out of Ohio State
Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht explained Tuesday evening that Mayfield was one of the first people to reach out after Tampa came to their decision
“He immediately asked for Emeka's number and he said, 'when is he getting in?” Licht told Mad Dog Sports Radio
“We flew in Emeka and his family on Friday
Baker and his wife picked them all up and took them all to brunch
“I don't think he was anticipating getting any new toys for his offense.”
Tampa Bay had plenty of needs across the roster going into the 2025 draft
The fact that they decided on a top wideout shows their continued commitment to Mayfield as a leader and quarterback.
So long as Mayfield plays like he did in 2024 (41 touchdowns and 4,500 yards)
the Buccaneers will continue to build around him.
A few days after this story ran in 2018, I found Baker Mayfield in the Cleveland Browns’ locker room and introduced myself
I told him I was the one who went to Oklahoma and ate at Tarahumara’s
his favorite restaurant near OU’s campus with the great chicken quesadillas and margaritas.
I was hoping to sit with Mayfield for a story, but the Browns elected not to make him available to me because he was feuding publicly with former coach Hue Jackson at the time
It was a bit of an omen of things to come.
polite chat in the locker room about the restaurant and my time on campus
I believed it was the first step in building a relationship with the Browns’ franchise quarterback
someone I’d be talking to and writing about for the next decade.
they were the first and final minutes I spent any amount of time around Mayfield privately
He arrived in Cleveland right about the time LeBron James was leaving
I told my bosses at The Athletic early into Mayfield’s rookie year that he was going to be Cleveland’s new LeBron and we needed to treat him as such
swept away in a cocktail of incompletions and interceptions blended with some of the highest moments this franchise has experienced in the last 25 years
which is why Mayfield’s mediocrity looked so good in isolated moments to a thirsty fan base searching for someone to love.
Mayfield’s legacy in Cleveland will forever be akin to the messy franchise that drafted him: complicated
He departs fourth on the all-time list in passing yards behind only Brian Sipe
Otto Graham and Bernie Kosar — the holy trinity of Browns quarterbacks
He’s fifth in touchdown passes and second in passer rating (minimum 500 attempts).
Yet his constant failures in fourth quarters and tight moments
made it evident the Browns needed to get better at the most important position to compete with the arms race of AFC quarterbacks
Mayfield always thought he was better than he was and it repeatedly got him into trouble with terrible footwork and ill-advised throws at inopportune times.
As he moves on to Carolina now
it’s difficult to pinpoint how it all unraveled so quickly
The torn labrum in his left shoulder certainly is part of it
The debate last summer was whether Mayfield was worth a $300 million contract
The Browns wisely never offered him an extension and
ultimately had to eat $10 million just to unload him
The Browns were toxic for 20 years and cycled through four head coaches and four coordinators in his first three seasons
terrible instability for a franchise quarterback
He sparred with Jackson after he was fired
and Mayfield was sabotaged by an unprepared and overwhelmed Freddie Kitchens
who was so horrifically inept at his job that he cost general manager John Dorsey his.
It was supposed to be different with Kevin Stefanski
Mayfield and Stefanski were terrific dance partners in 2020
guiding the Browns to the postseason and the team’s only playoff win of the new era
Stefanski spent their first season together trying hard to get Mayfield comfortable early in games with simple pitch-and-catch routes before getting more aggressive as the game progressed
but the relationship soured like so many others involving Mayfield
after Garrett lashed out to the media postgame over the coaching staff’s lack of adjustments at New England.
In one of those “careful what you wish for” moments
Stefanski never missed another meeting and privately shined a glaring spotlight on his quarterback during film sessions from that day forward.
There were plenty of errors to point out. In a league built for close finishes, Mayfield had a passer rating of 17.8 in the final four minutes of games last season when the Browns trailed by one possession or less. For those insisting it was the shoulder injury hindering him, Mayfield’s career passer rating was 51.1 under the same parameters — 59th in the NFL
His 19 career interceptions in fourth quarters are the second-most in the league since 2018
There was an eerie feeling surrounding that night
it felt like Mayfield’s final game as a member of the Browns
It looked from the press box like the Browns were setting up Mayfield to fail
almost deliberately delivering him a message
The team privately felt like Mayfield had plenty of chances to get rid of the ball and part of his problems that night were systemic to his issues throughout the season: a lack of confidence and an inability to trust what he saw.
We were left with a quarterback who didn’t trust his coach and a coach who didn’t trust his quarterback
Whether or not that ever could’ve been repaired will never be known now
but the team believed the issue was more the quarterback than the coach
this wasn’t a power struggle between coach and quarterback
The Browns never offered Mayfield an extension partly because they had four years of evidence that he was good
I’ve spoken to members of the organization who fully believe Mayfield can still have a fine career when he’s healthy and finds his swagger again
The Browns had an opportunity to get someone better and they took it.
The details surrounding Deshaun Watson are messy and the allegations are horrific
No one knows yet when he’ll take the field again
The comment ESPN reported that the Browns wanted an “adult in the room” at quarterback is an awful look for the franchise given Watson’s current predicament
Mayfield was widely viewed as childish and immature
His behavior annoyed teammates and divided the locker room
he’s off to another tenuous situation in Carolina to learn another system under another head coach who could soon be fired
Matt Rhule and Mayfield are now relying on each to save the other
At least Rhule will be getting a motivated Mayfield who feels slighted and disrespected
That’s historically when Baker has been at his best.
A franchise that has spent the better part of the last 20 years in football hell is back in purgatory
waiting on another new quarterback to save them

It’s early, but Notre Dame is letting Jalaythan Mayfield know that the 2027 North Carolina linebacker is on its radar
The Irish sent linebackers coach Max Bullough to Lincolnton High School to check in on Mayfield on Monday
the first day they hit the road recruiting this spring
“He just came to watch me practice,” said Mayfield
“He said it was good to see me out there and he wanted to start the relationship
build that relationship with me and continue to build that relationship by inviting me to the campus and getting me up there to see it.”
Mayfield has an impressive offer sheet that includes schools like North Carolina
Florida State and Ohio State among many others.
225-pounder was struck by the fact that the Irish had him on their radar
“It's pretty crazy to think that he could find a small-town kid like me and then make that trip,” he said
Mayfield said he will “probably” make his way to South Bend for a visit
but we'll do some planning and organize it with them,” he said.
He isn’t sure about any upcoming visits just yet
“Nothing's clear as of right now,” he said
“We're just getting information thrown at us
so we're taking it all in and figuring it out.”
Mayfield will be looking to see how Bullough and the rest of the Notre Dame coaches get to work.
“They're a pretty good team,” he said
“I was watching last year and they were a pretty good team
I'm excited to get to know the program a little more.”
Coaching will be a primary factor when it comes time for him to choose a school
relationship with head coach as well,” he said of the biggest factors
“A school that's going to take care of me
If there's anything that ever came up that happened
they'll still make sure I get to school and take care of me as well as development.
“A school that'll develop me and not only better me on the field
but better me in the classroom and ultimately develop me to be a great young man.”

Reaching the top is always a great feeling — Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans know it well
having witnessed a Super Bowl twice in franchise history — but can quarterback Baker Mayfield make it a third
In honor of McIlroy's incredible achievement that truly launched him to golf's immortal pantheon
CBS writer Bryan DeArdo went over 10 quarterbacks who could use a McIlroy like moment — it took McIlroy 11 years since his previous major victory to don the green jacket
and CBS selected 10 quarterbacks who could use a Super Bowl championship to relieve them of the weight on their shoulders just as McIlroy did
DeArdo picked Mayfield as one of his quarterbacks, reasoning that the question of whether or not Mayfield could win a Super Bowl remains
"After his time in Cleveland came to an end, Mayfield toiled around for a season before getting a fresh start in Tampa in 2023. Mayfield has made the most of his opportunity with the Buccaneers
He's played some of the best ball of his career and has led the Buccaneers to a pair of division crowns
But he and his teammates came up short at home against Washington in last year's wild-card round
dropping Mayfield's playoff record to 2-3
The loss to Washington begs the following question: Is Mayfield good enough to lead a team to a Super Bowl
That question continues to be unanswered heading into 2025."
Mayfield has been waiting quite a while to reach his own mountaintop
Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy in college at Oklahoma
but he never won a college football championship — nor has he won a Super Bowl
He's one of many NFL quarterbacks still waiting for it
but can he bring the Bucs to the promised land
Mayfield was excellent last year in many respects
throwing for 41 touchdowns and completing an astonishing 71% of his passes
but he also has turnover problems he needs to address — he led the league in both interceptions and fumbles last year
If he's able to clean up that side of his game and the Bucs can build a stout defense
Mayfield could end up lifting the Lombardi Trophy — just as McIlroy lifted the Masters Trophy on Sunday

Baker Mayfield becomes a fan favorite everywhere he goes
Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht was on Mad Dog Sports Radio this week and shared a story about Mayfield
volunteering to welcome a new NFL Draft pick and his family to Tampa Bay
Mayfield was ecstatic when the Buccaneers drafted a wide receiver in the first round with the 19th overall pick
The Bucs took Emeka Egbuka from Ohio State
and Mayfield immediately asked for the phone number for his new target and when he would be getting to Tampa Bay
Egbuka left Ohio State with 205 career receptions
more than any other receiver in program history
"I don't think he was anticipating getting any new toys for his offense," Licht said on the radio
Egbuka and his family got to Tampa Bay on Friday
the day after he was drafted and while the NFL Draft was still going
picked up Egbuka and his entire family to take them to brunch and show them around Tampa Bay
"He didn't have to do that," Licht said
"And he probably doesn't want me even telling anybody that
it's just he does that under the radar without wanting any fanfare for it."
This will be Mayfield's third season in Tampa Bay. He's made the Pro Bowl the last two years and has led the Buccaneers to an NFC South division title both seasons
Mayfield was the first quarterback in Buccaneers history to earn multiple Pro Bowl invites

Joe Burrow (2024) and Aaron Rodgers (2020)
Mayfield became one of 10 players in NFL history to ever throw for 4,500-plus yards and 40-plus touchdowns in a single season
The former Heisman Trophy winner finished the 2024 season ranking among league leaders in completions (tied-2nd)
passing yards (3rd) and passer rating (4th)
Mayfield has been among the league's elite
leading the NFL in passing touchdowns (69) and ranking second in passing yards (8,544)
Mayfield led a Tampa Bay offense that ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring (29.5 points per game) and finished with the second-most points scored in a single season in franchise history
The Buccaneers were the only team in the NFL to rank in the top five in both passing yards per game (250.4) and rushing yards per game (149.2) and became the first team in NFL history to complete 70% or more of their passes while averaging at least five yards per carry
Tampa Bay led the NFL in third-down conversion rate in 2024 (50.9%)
Mayfield operated at an exceptional level in 2024
layering the football with ease to a variety of targets as his disposal

underrated arm talent and off-platform prowess
The Buccaneers have found their franchise quarterback
A conversation on digging deep and realizing there is always something greater than football
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has always been open about his faith. He’s discussed countless times before on how much his faith plays a big role in his life. It’s a theme we’ve seen across the NFL from stars like Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, Texans quarterback C.J
But ahead of this third Sunday of the Lenten season
Mayfield joined the good folks at Sports Spectrum Friday to discuss several aspects of his faith
how a lesson from God brought him back to reality on his identity
When talking about his transition into the NFL from college and realizing he made it as a football player
Mayfield revealed how he was only focused on that rather than being something more
“[God] had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize I am more than a football player
There’s much more going on than the game of football,” said Mayfield
The veteran quarterback would add how challenges in his marriage
and his career being ‘stripped down’ made him open his eyes and ‘dive back in’ to his faith and accepting grace
"For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom."Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield on the latest Sports Spectrum podcast pic.twitter.com/QCD7EvxBy4
Mayfield’s faith journey also reflects his personal growth as a father
noting how becoming a “girl dad” has deepened his spiritual and emotional maturity
When asked if a young player comes and asks him who Jesus was to him
Tampa Bay’s signal caller would set aside his helmet and put his faith in front of everything else
that gave us this opportunity to live life.”
Whether it is immediately following a game or on podcasts and TV shows
Mayfield sharing his words on faith is refreshing and a trend we are beginning to see from more and more players
You can check out his full podcast appearance below
and teams are starting to pick up players that were not drafted and add them as depth pieces
Per a report by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are signing former Bowling Green quarterback Connor Bazelak
This will give the team more depth under center
The Buccaneers obviously already have their franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield
but it is always good to have guys that can come in and get the job done if Mayfield were to ever go down for any reason - so Tampa Bay is smart to throw a dart here
Bazelak ended his final season at Bowling Green with 3,044 passing yards on 66.9 percent completion
both of which led the Mid-American Conference
He was also able to limit turnovers by only throwing five interceptions in 402 passing attempts
The Buccaneers already have some guys to back up Mayfield
who has been with the team since they drafted him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft
But it is never a bad thing to have more guys to back up your franchise quarterback
especially one like Mayfield who tends to run very aggressively when he gets outside of the pocket
The Buccaneers will be hoping they do not have to use Bazelak in that kind of scenario
they will be hoping he can develop and learn under Mayfield until he possibly becomes a very solid NFL QB down the road
He covers the NFL and NBA for Athlon Sports

So you can imagine his surprise when he saw the franchise turn the card in for Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka
Adding Egbuka to a receiving room that already houses Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan
that is now some quartet that Baker has at his disposal
General manager Jason Licht had the pleasure of telling Mayfield about the Buccaneers' pick
and detailed how his quarterback felt about seeing Egbuka's name pop up
“I don't think he was anticipating getting any new toys for his offense,” Licht said on Mag Dog Radio
"I send him a text before we turned the card in
I immediately got an Aww expletive word that meant he was very happy."

Print It took time for Christine Mayfield to overcome the dread she felt in open spaces after she and five of her family members survived a mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas almost eight years ago
When she eventually laced up her favorite pair of New Balance shoes again
she did so with purpose: the Placentia resident made it her goal to complete 58 marathons in honor of each person killed in the attack
Mayfield is poised to cross that milestone Sunday at the Orange County Marathon
She said she wouldn’t have gotten to this point without the patience and support of a group of 10 women she’ll run with this weekend
which includes one other survivor of the same shooting
“It made all of us realize that community is everything,” Mayfield said
it has been seven and a half years of really leaning on each other and realizing we are blessed
There were 58 angels who did not come home from the concert that night.”
Mayfield and her group plan to continue sharing the stories of their “angels.” In the process
they’ve connected with a broad and diverse community of runners
each going the distance for their inspiring reasons
“When you’re at the start line of a marathon you’re very cognizant of the fact that your special story is one of many special stories,” Mayfield said
“You look at the person next to you and perhaps they just finished their last chemo treatment
perhaps they just lost a parent or a tragedy in their own life

an organization of runners who push people with disabilities along with them in chariots so they can experience the joy of crossing the finish line
The routes laid out for the OC Marathon will feature plenty of challenges
including a late uphill section that can intimidate some as they approach it
But the courses are not as hilly as similar events and a net downhill path
“It is probably one of the most beautiful half marathons that anyone will ever run,” Kutscher said
“Starting at Fashion Island you turn the corner on MacArthur and you have the entire Pacific Ocean staring at you.”
Kutscher advised those interested in cheering runners on to find positions away from the starting line
That allows the pack to thin out and makes spotting an individual among the throng easier
he recommended watching from Castaways Park near mile 7
he suggested going to the foot bridge at South Coast Plaza or to the Bird Streets in the Mesa Verde area
The latter tend to draw a large gathering of people form surrounding neighborhood
One place visitors are sure to catch up with runners is the finish line at the OC Fair & Event Center
It will also be the site of a carnival Kutscher described as a “celebration of running,” giving attendees an opportunity to “be social with other like-minded healthy people.”

(Eric Licas) There will also be a lifestyle and fitness expo at the event center on Friday
at least 4,000 people are signed up to participate in a 5K run and over 6,500 children will take on the Kids Run
The latter event is a recent addition encouraged by the marathon’s primary sponsor
They’ve invested heavily into the race in hopes of promoting more active lifestyles and getting people to think about their health earlier
The race has seen significant growth due to a rising popularity of running clubs and growing health consciousness
There was a dip in younger participants in the OC marathon around 2019
but this year the number of registered runners aged 18 to 34 is almost equal to those in the 35 to 45 bracket
And as many as 25% of those joining this year will be attempting their very first marathon or half-marathon
Kutscher advised new marathon runners to stay hydrated and “high five the volunteers or say
‘Thank you.’ When you have that spirit of happiness while you’re running
If you have a happiness about you it will help you in your run.”
