PRIMUS is back with its first new studio track since 2022's "Conspiranoid" EP: the blistering
A twisted fable steeped in groove and dark humor
the track features a guest appearance from Maynard James Keenan (TOOL
PUSCIFER),whose unmistakable voice slithers through the chaos with sinister glee
The single also marks the official studio debut of drummer John Hoffman
a Shreveport native who joined the band earlier this year after beating out more than 6,100 applicants in a global audition process dubbed the "Interstellar Drum Derby"
"Little Lord Fentanyl" showcases the intricate
whose unconventional style — described by Stereogum as a "weightless bustle of high-velocity flurries
and cartoonish cymbal clutches" — has brought renewed fire to PRIMUS since he officially joined the band earlier this year
His unlikely journey from Louisiana jam nights to the PRIMUS drum throne was recently chronicled in a feature interview with Stereogum
as well as the band's "Interstellar Drum Derby" YouTube series
The release of "Little Lord Fentanyl" comes in the midst of PRIMUS's spring run on the "Sessanta" tour — a collaborative outing with A PERFECT CIRCLE and PUSCIFER celebrating Keenan's 60(ish) birthday — and ahead of their "Onward & Upward" summer headline tour
The "Onward & Upward" tour marks an exciting new era for the band
Selected after a months-long audition process
his arrival has brought fresh fire and creative reinvention to the PRIMUS universe
including iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre
and a two-night finale at Channel 24 in Sacramento
the band will be joined by support from Ty Segall and MONONEON on select dates
Louisiana has breathed a very potent breath of freshness into this band we all call PRIMUS," Claypool said in a recent statement
"Come see why this amazing fellow was able to rise above over 6,100 applicants to win the 'Interstellar Drum Derby' and become the latest
drummer to sit on the PRIMUS drum throne."
PRIMUS played the first concert since longtime drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander's departure at the Fox Theater in Oakland
Sitting behind the drums for the show was Bryan "Brain" Mantia
who previously played with PRIMUS when Alexander originally left the band in 1996
PRIMUS also enlisted musicians from frontman Les Claypool's side projects
to perform during the December 30 performance
PRIMUS recorded two studio albums — "Brown Album" (1997) and "Antipop" (1999) — as well as the covers EP "Rhinoplasty" (1998) and the original theme song for the TV show "South Park"
In November, Alexander shared a letter with Rolling Stone magazine explaining his decision to leave the band
and sometimes the passion turns into a job
and sometimes that job doesn't feel like it's your being anymore," he said
He reflected on the impact his decision had on his physical
"When I discovered that I'm struggling with all these things
I had to sit and think about exactly what am I doing," Alexander said
"I don't think I've ever chosen my path in life
I think I've just always thought 'I'm a drummer
I'm just gonna do music,' and things came to me
The news of his departure was initially shared on October 29 by his now-former bandmates
who claimed that they received an e-mail from him nearly two weeks earlier saying he had "lost his passion for playing."
Alexander joined PRIMUS in 1989 and left in 1996
He exited the group again in 2010 but returned in 2013
Alexander revealed that he suffered a second heart attack after he previously endured a similar health scare in 2014
Les Claypool's plan to reform the "classic" PRIMUS lineup — with Alexander and guitarist Larry Lalonde — was put on hold when Alexander suffered his first heart attack
a "minor" attack that resulted in the drummer requiring triple bypass surgery
PRIMUS recruited TOOL's Danny Carey to fill in for a few dates
Weird-metal veterans Tool and Primus have been tight with one another since they were both on the Lollapalooza tour in 1993. Last year, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan’s side projects A Perfect Circle and Puscifer went out on tour with Primus, and the three bands released the split EP Sessanta E.P.P.P. Now
Primus have a new single with Maynard James Keenan guest vocals
and it’s naturally called “Little Lord Fentanyl.”
Right now, Primus are on their second tour with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer; it’s the Bay Area trio’s first run with their newly recruited drummer John Hoffman
they’ve been playing “Little Lord Fentanyl,” the song that they recorded with Keenan
If you can definitively make out any lyrics beyond “they call me Little Lord Fentanyl,” you’re a more attentive listener than I
Les Claypool naturally goes crazy with the slap-bass on this track
Is it weird that a song can be transgressive and comforting at the same time
Listen and check out the Sessanta tour’s remaining dates below
“Little Lord Fentanyl” is out now on Virgin. Read our recent interview with John Hoffman, who plays on “Little Lord Fentanyl,” here.
UPDATE: And here’s Keenan, who runs Merkin Vinyards, explaining in a Facebook comment how tariffs affect winemakers…

Stuart Maynard took charge of Notts County in January 2024
Automatic promotion-chasing Notts County are in a "shootout" for final day glory against League Two title hopefuls Doncaster Rovers
Notts need to beat already-promoted Doncaster and have results elsewhere go their way to snatch a third-placed finish to go up this weekend
"Saturday is like a cup final," Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham.
"We just have to take care of our own business
we have to win on Saturday to give ourselves that opportunity
"It has that feeling about it because of what is at stake
They can win the league if they beat us and if we win
so it has that feeling about it that it is a one off game."

Notts County beat Harrogate to secure play-off spot
Notts are in with a last-gasp chance of sealing promotion during the regular season after spending the past 11 weeks outside the automatic promotion spots
Maynard's side are two places and three points behind third-placed Bradford City
It means that beating Doncaster will not be enough to get the Magpies up
Notts will also need Bradford to lose against Fleetwood Town and fourth-placed Walsall to drop points against Crewe Alexandra to make it possible on goal difference
"It is a little bit frustrating that we are relying on others and that it's out of our hands
but we know what our task is and we are ready to go," Maynard said
"When we have lost a couple of games they have always responded and bounced back in big games and got big results."

On Thursday (April 24), Maynard James Keenan joined Loudwire Nights to celebrate the launch of the Sessanta V2.0 tour with A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus
He also spent some time talking about Tool's involvement in Back to the Beginning, the final show for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath
Listen to the full conversation in the player near the end of this article
"I was at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, hanging out with Wolfgang [Van Halen] and some of the guys, I think even Robert Trujillo," Keenan recalled to host Chuck Armstrong
"We were on the travel over there and are just going
there's a rumor about the Black Sabbath show.' I was like
Keenan's initial thought was he'd go to Birmingham and collaborate with other artists onstage
similar to his experience at Ozzy's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony
"All of a sudden I'm at home and I get the call
Tool's been asked to do a song,' and now I have to call back Wolfgang and those guys and go
Keenan admitted he wasn't optimistic about Tool actually agreeing to do Back to the Beginning — and he wasn't even sure if the event itself would happen
"Initially we passed because I was like
I don't know how this is going to go," he said
I guess I can hop on a plane and go over and do the song with a couple of guys
rather than dragging the whole band and going through all that
It always ends up being something difficult
so I didn't think it was going to happen."
Diving deeper into his love and appreciation for Ozzy
Keenan gave a tremendous amount of credit to Black Sabbath for him even being an artist
"The reason I'm on a stage at all is because of Black Sabbath's first album," Keenan explained

passed away unexpectedly at the age of 74 from a stroke
His final days were spent surrounded by the love and support of his cherished family
whose quiet strength and deep kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew him
It’s hard to sum him up in words—except to say
and together they built a life centered around love
They proudly welcomed and raised three children—Jeremy
and Joey—each one a source of pride and joy for him
David loved the simple and meaningful pleasures of life
especially golfing with his wife and youngest son
hunting trips with both of his sons and grandsons
and he was never happier than when camping with his wife and family
He and Karen built a home that became a true haven—a place of peace and laughter where their children could escape the world and just be together
and nothing brought David more joy than having his entire family together
simply enjoying each other’s company
especially when baking his famous cinnamon rolls—a treasured family tradition every Easter and Christmas
He especially loved when his daughter and grandchildren joined in to make them
a steady presence who gave his heart completely and unconditionally
He was also an incredibly gifted carpenter
What began as a hobby became a deeply meaningful way he showed love to those around him
David built countless beautiful treasures for his family and friends—hutches
His hands could repair anything that needed salvaging
and everything he made carried the unmistakable mark of care
David spent his career as a plumber and was a devoted member of UA Local 19 and 140
and proudly working for Great Western Mechanical for 28 years
and lending a helping hand wherever it was needed
he continued to serve and volunteer with the union—proof of the pride he took in his work and the community he helped build
and has joined the loved ones he has missed so dearly
He leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years
and Joey (Karin); six grandchildren—Samantha
and Abby; and a family who will forever miss his gentle smile
David’s absence leaves a space that cannot be filled
but his presence will continue to be felt in every shared story
and every act of love that reflects the man he was
We invite all who knew and loved David to join us for his viewing on Thursday

When I started my interview with Maynard James Keenan, the frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle
I said "Happy Birthday," because he turns 61 on April 17
That might seem like an unusual response for someone celebrating his birthday while on the "Sessanta V2.0" tour, the six-week co-headlining tour featuring Primus, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle, which kicks off on April 24 at Acrisure Arena
Keenan doesn't shy away from the reality of aging; he understands his limits and remains creatively free and focused more than ever
“There are things not to eat before you walk on stage
and things not to lift with your back,” Keenan said
There’s just more frame of reference and more experience.”
All three bands will be blended into one continuous performance
and will be less about theatrics and flow and more about orchestrated chaos
and it has to be people who are wired to handle this kind of chaos
then hang out and get ready for your next songs
this is not the tour for you,” Keenan said
he performed during the two-night Sessanta concert at the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix with the same lineup followed by a tour
It was extended into 2025 to celebrate his 61st birthday
Each of Keenan’s bands has its creative vision for live performances
which don’t always align with mainstream audiences and sometimes even the most devout fans
you have to dig into whatever your approach was
and if you’re wrong and you don’t get it right
you have to be OK with making those mistakes and adjustments to make it better for your group of people
especially if your heart is in it,” Keenan said
As live music has become a multi-billion-dollar industry with rising ticket prices
Keenan believes there will always be live music
regardless of the “industry” side of things
“People enjoy learning how to play instruments
And I think there’s a culture of humans that enjoy the larger format and arena (shows)
But you’re always going to have those performances around the campfire
and that’s always going to happen on those levels
It’s just the nature of what we’re going to do,” Keenan said
Does Keenan have any birthday plans in the local area or a reason for starting the tour in the Coachella Valley
“I think it was because the booking agent said
‘You’re opening in Palm Springs,’” Keenan said
so you can at least do production rehearsals
and still have access to equipment that you might have forgotten to bring
Palm Springs isn’t that far of a drive back to Los Angeles if we need to make some adjustments.”

Primus brought in Tool singer Maynard James Keenan and his side project Puscifer for a new single, “Little Lord Fentanyl”. The standalone track marks Primus’ first studio release with new drummer John Hoffman
who recently beat out over 6,100 other applicants to join the band
While Claypool’s slap-bass and Hoffman’s funk pocket carry the song and give it some potential
the forced eccentricity once again comes off as contemporary Primus trying to capture the authentic strangeness of the band’s early days
the band’s first headlining trek with Hoffman
featuring support from Ty Segall and MonoNeon
“This fiery, cheerful, octopus-like drummer from Shreveport, LA has breathed a very potent breath of freshness into this band we all call Primus,” Claypool said in a recent statement. “Come see why this amazing fellow was able to rise above over 6,100 applicants to win the Interstellar Drum Derby and become the latest

vocalist Maynard James Keenan has revealed that the aforementioned alternative metal juggernauts initially passed at the chance to perform at the upcoming live sendoff extravaganza being planned for pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath & their legendary frontman Ozzy Osbourne this July
Speaking to Loudwire Nights
Keenan relayed that he himself initially had different plans altogether for the this final hurrah
“The conversation first came up when I was at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
hanging out with Wolfgang [Van Halen] and some of the guys
there’s a rumor about the Black Sabbath show.’ I was like
So I kinda had planned a song to do and all of a sudden I’m at home and I get the call
Tool‘s been asked to do a song,’ and I’m like ‘Fuck.’ Now I have to call back Wolfgang and those guys and go
the conversation about going to do the song was like
ahh… I don’t know that this gonna happen.’
he’s gonna do it.’ Because man
I don’t know what kind of modern miracles we’ll come up with to get him on stage to do the songs
but I’m kinda preparing for the worst — but hoping for the best
When asked about how the call to do the upcoming farewell show came about
“I wasn’t sure who the call was coming from
And having seen Ozzy move around I was doubtful it was gonna happen at all
I don’t know how this is going to go
I guess I can hop on a plane and go over and do the song with a couple of guys on site
Nothing is a simple decision of just ‘Yes
Let’s go!’ It always ends up being something difficult
so I didn’t think it was going to happen
Keenan later went on to explain the impact Sabbath and Ozzy have had on him, offering, “The reason I’m on a stage at all is because of Black Sabbath‘s first album.” Keenan has also previously discussed how influential Black Sabbath were in his musical upbringing
Sadly, Keenan‘s concerns over Osbourne‘s health aren’t unwarranted. Earlier this year, Osbourne himself revealed he could no longer walk unassisted due to the various injuries he suffered over the years and his advancing struggles with Parkinson’s Disease
it has repeatedly been stated that Osbourne‘s ability to sing remains unaffected
Speaking on his SiriusXM program earlier this week, Osbourne revealed he was currently in a heavy training regimen to get as healthy as possible for this final live swan song. He commented [transcribed via Blabbermouth.net]:
“I’m in heavy training for this show that’s coming up
I haven’t done anything for — this will be seven years [since I played a full concert]
and so I’ve been through all this surgery
It really is like starting from scratch.”
“…It’s endurance training
The first thing to go when you’re laid up is your stamina
I’m doing two sets of three-minute walks a day and weight training
but I’ve been laying on my back recovering from umpteen surgeries.”
Keenan also went on to outline what Puscifer have in store for their fifth studio album, stating:
“We have a whole collection of music now. We’re just kinda waiting on some drums from Sarah Jones. Uh, Greg Edwards is working on some bass right now. Women’s sports veteran joins the Fever ahead of the 2025 season
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 27, 2025) — The Indiana Fever today announced the hiring of Jackie Maynard as associate vice president of basketball communications, a newly created role within the organization.
Maynard joins the Fever with 14 years of experience in sports communications and public relations, having spent the previous 12 seasons working in professional women’s sports. Reporting to Fever Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Amber Cox, Maynard will oversee all aspects of basketball communications for the Fever, including department strategy and serving as the primary contact between the team and the media.
“I am incredibly excited to join the Indiana Fever. From my first conversation to the last, it was clear that everyone, at every level, is invested in setting the standard for fans, players and the community,” Maynard said. “I look forward to joining a franchise that has been committed to the growth of women’s basketball for over two decades and I’m ready to do all I can to help the Indiana Fever become the preeminent women’s sports franchise in the world.”
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Maynard comes to Indianapolis after a nine-season tenure with Orlando City SC of Major League Soccer and the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League. Leading Orlando’s communications team, Maynard was responsible for all communications and media strategy for both professional sides, the organization’s MLS NEXT Pro franchise and events at Inter&Co Stadium.
Most recently, Maynard and her team were awarded with the inaugural NWSL Communications Team of the Year following a historic season for the department which saw a 121% increase in global media coverage for the Pride. In 2020, Maynard was also a key contributor to a campaign that saw the Pride win Sports Business Journal’s “Best in Sports Social Media” award.
Starting her career in women’s sports in 2013 with the Western New York Flash, Maynard has built relationships and managed media relations for a number of elite athletes including six-time FIFA World Player of the Year Marta, U.S. Women’s National Team stars such as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd, and international soccer stars Kaká and Nani. Prior to her time in professional soccer, Maynard also worked in the National Hockey League and collegiate athletics.

announced today the introduction of the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act
a groundbreaking initiative to position Oklahoma as a national leader in embracing sound money principles and cutting-edge fiscal policy
“Bitcoin represents freedom from bureaucrats printing away our purchasing power,” Maynard said. “As a decentralized form of money, Bitcoin cannot be manipulated or created by government entities. It is the ultimate store of value for those who believe in financial freedom and sound money principles.”
The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act would ensure Oklahoma is prepared for a future where digital assets play a pivotal role in the global economy, Maynard said. By allowing state funds to responsibly invest in Bitcoin, the legislation would provide a hedge against inflation and reinforce Oklahoma’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and forward-thinking governance.
“This bill is about protecting the hard-earned money of Oklahoma’s citizens,” Maynard continued. “By diversifying our state’s savings and pension funds into digital assets, we are not only securing a stronger financial future for our state but also demonstrating Oklahoma’s leadership in adopting innovative fiscal policies.”
The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act underscores Maynard’s belief in leveraging technology to empower individuals and governments alike. With Bitcoin’s finite supply and decentralized nature, he said it represents a unique opportunity to strengthen Oklahoma’s financial foundation and ensure sustainable growth for generations to come.
HB1203 will be eligible for consideration in the upcoming legislative session, which starts Feb. 3. If enacted, it would become effective Nov. 1.
