Competitive harness driver Neva Burright at age 65
competed as a harness racer at Maywood Park in Chicago
Joe Scherschel/Life Picture Collection/Shutterstock
In the 1940s Neva Burright gained attention as a harness-racing grandmother
But by that time she had been competing in the sport for decades
and she had been around horse tracks from the beginning of her life—quite literally
The photos by LIFE staff photographer Joe Scherschel show a woman who was truly at home at the track. whether racing horses or hanging out with her family in the stables. LIFE’s 1948 story said that Burright “not only spends 18 hours a day training and driving trotting horses at Chicago’s Maywood Park
but she spends the night in one of the barns
with her husband [who was also a harness racer] in the next stall.”
The crowning moment of Burright’s career was in 1943, when she became the first woman to win on harness racing’s Grand Circuit, with a gelding called Luckyette. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch described the joyous scene after her race victory: “…it has been years since we saw so many hats tossed into the air at a race track
and heard so many feminine screeches of satisfaction as when this pleasant white-haired lady demonstrated her skill and the ability of her honest gelding to such a superb degree.”
Neva competed until 1954, and she died in 1958. In 1994 she was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame

Rendering of AV Chicago’s new headquarters in Maywood
Event production company AV Chicago is moving from the South Loop to suburban Maywood
where it will expand its footprint and transform a former military armory
AV Chicago held a groundbreaking event with local officials on Thursday to kickstart the redevelopment
The event company is spending upward of $4 million on the project
AV Chicago co-owner and co-President Justin Frick said
Property records show an affiliate of AV Chicago purchased the former armory for $1.2 million in December
“It allows a lot of room for expansion,” Frick said
It was built in 1923 as a Moose Lodge clubhouse and automobile camping ground
aimed at club members who wanted to spend the night in the suburbs rather than the city
The future headquarters of AV Chicago at 50 Madison St
The facility was used by the Illinois National Guard 33rd Tank Company in the 1940s
when 122 men were inducted and served in the 192nd Tank Battalion in the Philippines
It’s also been home to Saltzman Printers and Reuse Depot
the building will be renovated to include offices
production space and a 7,500-square-foot event space called The Armory
The entire building spans 43,000 square feet
and Frick said its transformation into an event space is one of the most exciting components of the project
The space — with its vaulted ceilings — will be able to accommodate events ranging from weddings to galas and theater performances
There will also be two wedding suites and dedicated catering space
Another nod to the building’s history will be seen with its renovated lobby
which will celebrate Maywood’s soldiers and their sacrifice
The redevelopment is a big step for AV Chicago
which has rented space in the South Loop for the past 13 years
The event company has about 35 employees and expects to grow once it moves
The event industry was hit hard by the pandemic
with about 30% of the industry’s employees exiting during that time
He said AV Chicago hopes to work alongside Maywood to create new jobs and bring the company’s headcount into the 40s
It’s also exploring new internship opportunities with schools like Proviso East High School
but the company is outgrowing its South Loop office. He said it needed a new home with room for expansion and an active labor market
someone had suggested looking into the former armory as a potential office
AV Chicago co-Presidents and co-owners Justin Frick (right) and Andrew Brode at the company’s groundbreaking ceremony for its future Maywood headquarters
we found ourselves taking a tour of the place,” Brode said
but we could see the vision of what this would be for not only our company
Maywood Mayor Nathaniel George Booker said bringing new life to 50 Madison St
has been on the village’s radar since before he took office in 2021
Booker was a village trustee for two years before he was elected mayor
Booker welcomed the new event space and workforce development that the project will bring
along with new property taxes for the village
“This is more than just the AV company coming together,” Booker said
“This is a new partnership coming on board that I could not be more happy to say we’re bringing to the village of Maywood.”
AV Chicago partnered with Maywood; West Regional Enterprise Zone; Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development to acquire the building
The company also secured state incentives for the project
AV Chicago anticipates occupying the building in late 2025

A hearing was held in Frontier County District Court Monday on a motion challenging the “sufficiency of the evidence” of the Felony Child Abuse charge against Maywood Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bejot
The case stems from a Frontier County Sheriff’s Office investigation into an October 1
2024 confrontation that reportedly occurred between Bejot and a 12-year-old student in the Maywood Schools’ Commons Area
Both Bejot and the student tumbled to the floor during the interaction
During Monday’s Plea in Abatement hearing
Bejot’s attorney Mark Porto challenged whether there was enough evidence presented in Frontier County Court to bind the case over to District Court for trial
Porto questioned whether elements of the Child Abuse statute were met
Nebraska Assistant Attorney General Demetria Herman is prosecuting the case
She said that while Bejot could ask the student to remove their hat
the Superintendent had no authority to seize the hat from the student
She continued that the Superintendent had other means of maintaining order
Both Porto and Herman pointed to Preliminary Hearing testimony and the 1.5 minute surveillance video of the incident
Both items were entered as evidence at the Plea in Abatement hearing
District Judge Patrick Heng took the arguments under advisement and will issue a ruling at a later time
a status hearing on the case was scheduled for March 19
After charges were filed against Bejot last October
the Maywood Board of Education issued a statement stating that Bejot was placed on paid administrative leave
Their statement continued that placing an employee on administrative leave is not any determination of guilt or wrongdoing
An investigator with the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office filed a report with the court indicating that the Maywood School Board voted at their December 16
2024 meeting to reinstate Bejot as Superintendent and he returned to school on the following day
The Frontier County District Court amended Bejot’s bond conditions to not have any direct contact with the alleged victim in the case
A former Maywood Public Schools teacher is now facing amended charges
including allegations of manufacturing child pornography and abuse
