BERWYN >> It was a sign of life for Conestoga
As a tepid first half for the District 1 champions in their PIAA Class 6A first round game was drawing to a close
Shane O’Brien pulled up for a three that was ambitious in both its intention and its distance
especially with ‘Stoga mired in a scoring rut
giving the efforts of Ben Robinson a lift and jolting a packed gym back to awareness
It was only a precursor of what was to come
The slash and splash tandem of Robinson and O’Brien helped Conestoga turn the game around in the third quarter
the Pioneers riding it to a 52-42 win over Mechanicsburg for their first PIAA playoff win since 2009
“I knew we had a ton of potential; it was just a matter of if we all came together
trusted each other and were willing to be unselfish,” Pioneers coach Sean Forcine said
I might have questioned you once or twice but as this group comes on
we keep getting stronger and tighter together.”
Shane O'Brien scored 14 of his 17 points in the third quarter
sparking a Conestoga rally in the PIAA 6A first round
O’Brien provided the splash on Saturday
The junior reached the zone all shooters dream of in the third quarter
scoring 14 of his game-high 17 points in the frame and nailing all three of the three-point attempts he took in the quarter
“I thought this was a typical Conestoga win,” O’Brien said
I think we exceeded everyone else’s expectations
We want to go as far as we can in this tournament.”
The senior’s relentless rim attacks wore down the Wildcats over time
he kept Conestoga from falling too far behind in the first half and didn’t stop on his way to 16 points to go with five steals and a block
it seemed like I had a lot of lanes,” Robinson said
“We were not hitting shots in the beginning
there were shots I could have taken that I do take but I opted not to take those so I could get downhill
jump-stop and kick or just finish it over a defender or not over a defender – sometimes there just wasn’t help there.”
Playing for the first time since winning their first District 1 title in 38 years last Friday at St
Forcine felt like the team’s offense was just a little too selfish
Robinson concurring that there were too many one pass then shot possessions
and they weren’t competing on the board
doesn’t have a lot of size but the Wildcats have athletes and they played well together
After the hosts fought back from a 9-3 deficit to take a brief 10-9 lead on Rowan Miller’s three with six minutes left in the second
Mechanicsburg followed the lead of senior Princeton football recruit Josh Smith on an 11-0 run to take a 20-10 lead
“They were winning I think 11-7 on rebounding in the first half and we pride ourselves on rebounding so we could not let that happen,” Robinson said
“That’s why we were losing and in the second half we really locked in but in the future
We have to be ready from the start.”
Conestoga senior Ben Robinson's strong drives led to 16 points as the Pioneers rallied past Mechanicsburg
Forcine demanded two things specifically from his team
He wanted them to be tougher defensively and more unselfish offensively and with what he called a “strong-minded” team
The sequence that led to O’Brien’s second quarter three brought both
After the Pioneers forced a stop, Miller grabbed the board then threw a long outlet pass up the floor to O’Brien who didn’t hesitate to put up the shot
I just shoot it,” O’Brien said
Forcine had no problem with O’Brien pulling up from deep and even less so with any of the shots he took the rest of the way
“That kid’s the ultimate gamer,” Forcine said
“There’s nothing that he’s afraid of
only had five points but he played a terrific floor game mixing defense
ball-handling and creation with half of his six assists going to O’Brien
Mechanicsburg netted the first points of the second half
then Miller found O’Brien for back-to-back threes
Robinson answered a Wildcats jumper with a drive then Sam Gibbs splashed a three to put Conestoga ahead for good in what grew to an 11-0 run when Robinson found O’Brien for a three-pointer then again for a traditional three-point play on an and-one
it all just came to me and I was ready,” O’Brien said
I love playing in front of a lot of people.”
but a technical foul assessed to the Wildcats with 27.9 left in the third quarter allowed O’Brien to step to the line and knock down both foul shots to finish his 14-point frame
Miller and Robinson went back-to-back converting driving layups to open the fourth and another slashing take by Robinson with 3:04 left extended the lead to nine and put the Pioneers in sight of a milestone win
It shows what it means to us and to our community for us to have this success.”
A 16-year gap between state playoff wins is an interesting thing to ask a roster full of players between 14 and 18 years-old about
but the senior quickly added that right now
it’s just another win and the Pioneers are focused on getting one more to keep their season going
That will come Wednesday when the Pioneers face Hazelton
What they could quantify was the environment they played in on Saturday
Conestoga’s gym was packed to the rafters
the public address announcer repeatedly announcing the game as a sellout during pregame and asking fans to pack in to get everyone a seat
“It was our biggest crowd by far since I’ve been the head coach
we hung up our first championship banner in 38 years and the fact the community came out to support us means a lot to me as a community member and someone who went to this school.”
(WHP) — A group of people standing outside a Cumberland County Tesla dealership Friday night took part in a national movement against Elon Musk for his involvement with President Donald Trump
It was organized by The PA 10th District Network
a group of local activists who say they are committed to "defending democratic values and institutions by partnering with individuals and groups with a common mission through engagement
The protestors who came from all over Central PA came together to make some noise
it was almost all positive," said organizer Susan Roller
But that noise didn't come without some opposition
One man interrupted Roller's interview with CBS 21's Maxine Rose
grown adults acting like little children." He later called the protestors "pathetic" and told Roller to "shut up."
it was largely positive," Roller said
"He didn't come out here when there were 120 or 200 people here."

Disruption was the goal for many outside of the dealership
“Elon is a corporate welfare queen,” "Swastikars," and "Buy a Tesla
"In the service of what is needed in this country
a minor disruption by people speaking here using their First Amendment rights is not something anyone else should complain about," Roller said
"I feel we all have freedom of speech
but I feel your speech should be educated," said Brenda White
a Mechanicsburg resident who had been observing the protest
and now they turn their back on him because he's tried to save the country."
others across the country have responded with violence

"I don't think violence is a response
It feeds into the violence that's being done against us," said Roller

Elon Musk shared on X responding to a website called "Dogequest."
That website reportedly was publishing the personal information of Tesla owners across the U.S
Musk said in the post that this destruction is "extreme domestic terrorism."
The question is this: Do the people at today's protest agree
“That seems to be a social media tactic used by both sides
not the list of which is the felon in charge," Bentz said
Someone owns a Tesla or has a lease on one – why should they be punished?" White said
Smith also asked our political insiders on Face the State about what kind of crime the violent protests really are
(WHP) — A group of cat advocates in Cumberland County is clawing for change
They argue that an ordinance threatens the lives of stray cats
they are arguing that people will be facing the consequences
while some in Mechanicsburg choose to care for the cats
others argue that doing so only creates more issues than it solves
You can't just have feral cats running around," said Rick Wigton
Neighbors say concerns are growing and so are the number of cats
"I go for walks frequently and I see them
but they seem to be multiplying," said Wigton
neuter and return feral cats in the area (TNR)
has received a written warning from police after getting a complaint
Webb said the police told her she violated the borough's animal code by feeding and sheltering what she calls "community cats." So
I can't do that!' That would be disgraceful
That's where the organizer of a cat advocacy group
Return (TNR) is a comprehensive strategy that includes spay
They get their left ear tips so trappers like me can identify if a cat has been spayed or neutered
And then it includes the caretakers being allowed to shelter and provide food and water for them," said Domen
after Mechanicsburg agreed to support a TNR program in 2022 to help slow the growth of the stray cat population
Domen said she asked the borough to update their animal code to reflect that
It's now two years later and that still hasn't happened
Domen said people like Webb could pay the price — an estimated six hundred dollars per cat
"The borough paid to have the 12 cats spayed and neutered — vaccinated — in March
they are essentially telling her to starve them
fine her if she continues to feed," said Domen
"I'm just asking them now to just finish what they started."
"I feel I've done the right thing
I'm going to continue to do this," said Webb
A Mechanicsburg council meeting will be held on Jan
While changes to the ordinance are not on the agenda for that night
many neighbors said they are hoping to go to make their voices heard
We've contacted the Mechanicsburg Borough manager
who said they could not comment at this time
