— Morishia Vershonda Robinson was killed in a crash early Saturday morning along Mechanicsville Turnpike in Henrico County
The 41-year-old Tappahannock woman was alone in the car when she died
"The preliminary investigation indicates that Ms
Robinson was driving eastbound on Mechanicsville Turnpike toward Hanover when she struck the guardrail on the right-hand side of the road
and collided with the jersey wall along the westbound lanes of Mechanicsville Turnpike," a Henrico police spokesperson said
"Speed and lack of a seatbelt are believed to be factors in this crash."
Police were called to the crash scene at about 2:20 a.m

Hanover baseball records final out in 6-2 win over Mechanicsville
Hanover County may well be the state's top locality for youth and high school baseball
Atlee is the reigning Class 4 state champion
Hanover has won five state titles in the last 12 years
Though Mechanicsville hasn't captured the ultimate prize since winning Group AAA championships in 1997 and 2001
the Mustangs regularly produce strong teams capable of contending with the best in Virginia
a couple hundred fans — about a third of them wearing Mechanicsville's purple and black
most of the rest clad in Hanover's powder blue — packed the stands and lined the fences down the first and third base lines to produce a charged atmosphere indicative of a county rich in baseball tradition
Virginia Tech commit Brady Elrod steals home in 6-2 win over county rival Mechanicsville
Elrod produced the game's standout highlight in the bottom of the fourth inning with the home team up 5-2
After rocking a line drive single to center and advancing to second when the center fielder made a diving attempt at a catch
Mustangs pitcher John Hamilton was delivering from the full windup
who has stolen home before in a summer league game but never in high school competition
The catcher had to bend down to apply the tag
Though the ball got there a step before Elrod did
he began his head-first dive as the pitch was delivered
swam his left hand around the catcher's glove
popped up and made the safe sign in unison with the umpire before storming toward the dugout and getting mobbed by his joyous teammates
prove me wrong I can't steal on you," said Elrod
who scored two runs on the night and swiped another bag in the bottom of the sixth after reaching on a perfectly placed bunt single down the third-base line
but I'm always going to be as aggressive as I can in the right situation
Will Hodges strikeout for Hanover baseball in 6-2 win over Mechanicsville
Mechanicsville (10-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning
a junior right hander with a low three-quarters delivery who started on the mound
said a couple mental mistakes on his part allowed the visitors to build that early lead
Jenkins smoked a 2-2 fastball over the left field wall for a solo shot to halve the deficit in the bottom of the first
and Hodges found his groove in the second frame
After Hamilton singled to right with one down
the next batter hit a sharp ground ball back to Hodges
who pivoted and threw to second to start a double play and retire the side
He proceeded to retire the next 10 hitters consecutively
and didn't allow another baserunner until the top of the sixth
and left the mound in the top of the seventh to a standing ovation from the home support
and reliever Bryce Krines sat down each of the three hitters he faced to shut the door in the seventh
"I just had to go out there giving it my best stuff
knowing they can't hit me," Hodges said when asked how he settled in after the two-run first
"I felt really good after (the double play in the second)
and throwing first pitch off-speed for strikes to keep them off balance."
Gabe Jenkins two-RBI single for Hanover baseball in 6-2 win over Mechanicsville
Hanover (9-2) broke the game open with a decisive four-run bottom of the third
Center fielder Jackson Millan and Elrod were both hit by pitches to chase Mustangs starter Ben Favreau and set the table for three-hole hitter Jenkins as the sun dipped below the tree line beyond the right field wall
A balk by Hamilton advanced Millan and Elrod to third and second base
who finished two-for-three with three RBIs
scorched a single back up the middle to score both runners and give Hanover a 3-2 lead
had to foul a few off," Jenkins said of that at-bat
The Hawks pushed two more across in the frame on a bases loaded single from second baseman Danny Kilgore to score Jenkins and designated hitter Gabe Corey
Jenkins has been the fulcrum in the middle of Hanover's lineup this season
The big third baseman is hitting .462 with five doubles
His faith has been the underlying factor driving his standout season
"I just want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ
I wouldn't even be on earth," Jenkins said
standing outside the Hawks dugout after the game as his teammates tidied up the field
Jenkins said rivalry games against Hanover County opposition such as Atlee and Mechanicsville are "just different."
it's unmatched," Jenkins said with a smile and nod to his teammates
"There's nothing like Hanover County baseball."

— A group of students at Mechanicsville High School is working to fund grief support for their peers and other children in the community who have experienced losses
The high school’s student council is doing so through their “Ville Fest” event
“Ville Fest is our biggest event here at Mechanicsville,” said Jillian Keener
junior vice president of the student council
The teens aim to raise $10,000 at the event to send 30 kids to a local children’s grief program called Comfort Zone Camp
“I have a number of friends who have lost someone who’s really close to them
This organization is really important for making sure they feel better and feel like they’re supported and connected,” senior vice president Drake Parrish said
feels especially connected to fundraising for this charity
and that there’s a place for these people to go
and there’s a feeling that you will feel so
so much better getting to talk to somebody and just have fun,” Hughes said
Hughes was touched to learn her peers voted to focus their annual fundraising efforts on this program
“Sometimes you don’t know if somebody has lost a loved one
To know that I walk around the school and see our posters and think
‘This is a camp for grieving children,’ is significant
One Purpose event will take place over seven hours at the high school on April 26
Community members can stop by anytime to donate
“It’s cool to see us come together for our friends and peers around us,” Keener said
As these students put the finishing touches on their months-long efforts
they express eagerness to see the impact they’ll make for their peers
“It just shows how much teenagers can come together.”

— Tyler Warren made the Atlee community proud Thursday night when he was selected 14th overall in the NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts
CBS 6’s Lane Casadonte took a look at the journey that led to hearing his name called on draft night
When he played for head coach Matt Gray at Atlee
He played multiple positions and contributed at each of them
Gray wasn't sure how to classify him into a single position
and Warren didn't know what to expect either
Warren signed to play at Penn State with no idea what his next five years would look like
it was exciting to play college football and have that opportunity
but I wasn't sure what I really wanted my career to look like
I was just kind of excited to have that opportunity
I was going to make the most of it," Warren said
Warren won the John Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end after his 2024-25 performance
He also owns nearly every Penn State record for that position
In an era where college athletes transfer regularly
Warren never thought about leaving State College
even though the competition at his position alone would have run others off
"So there were five NFL tight ends in that room when I got there
It was a grind to kind of get in the rotation
and I slowly worked my way up through the years until I was a starter," he said
"I think that's just kind of how I was raised
what my parents expected me to do is kind of stick it out and earn my way and trust the process."
The process transformed Warren into a first-round draft pick
It's something the Richmond area has not seen in five years and something the Atlee community has never experienced
and people you haven't seen for five or six years come back and start talking about Tyler
He came back to a basketball game and was an absolute professional about how he handled himself," Gray said
and they tell me people seeing them on the street or in the store
So it means a lot to kind of have that local support," Warren said
"Doing what you love is really cool to be able to do this and continue my career
Not a lot of people are lucky enough to keep playing football
it's rare that people get to continue their careers at this point."
In an age where some of his contemporaries are already making demands of their prospective new bosses
Warren is grateful for everything he's received and may possibly encounter
It might be refreshing to the pro community where he lands
but those who have known him in Mechanicsville are not surprised
Extremely talented and a guy that's going to be 100% team first," Gray said
"I always try to be the same person," Warren said
"I feel like I'm pretty much the same person I was when I stepped on campus as a freshman
you might have a little more notoriety at this point
My career is just about trying to treat people the way I'd like to be treated and treat everybody with respect
and not letting it change who you are and what got you to this point."

the staff of Story cannabis dispensary in Mechanicsville
announced they have rejected a contract offer from their employer and have voted to authorize a strike to push for higher pay
Today’s announcement empowers the union bargaining committee to call a strike at a time of their choosing
but workers are not yet on strike at this time
"We dedicate ourselves to this company and this community
and over the course of a year and a half of negotiations
Story has refused to hear us out on fair pay," said Michael Conklin
who has worked at the Mechanicsville Story location for almost two years
"That's why we voted to strike – because we deserve to have our voices heard in a growing industry
and we deserve to be able to provide for ourselves and our loved ones rather than a wage freeze."
