After more than a decade of planning and over $100,000 in grants
the City of Mechanicville is putting its historic train station up for auction
once considered key to revitalizing the city’s downtown
will be sold to the highest bidder on Friday
dates back to the late 1800s and once connected passengers to Albany and Saratoga Springs
Despite restoration grants and clean-up work
the building was never fully rehabilitated
the depot is being sold to return the property to the tax rolls
While some residents and former committee members are frustrated by the move
city officials say they hope the site can still serve a productive purpose

Once thought to be restored with government grants
Growing up in Mechanicville, New York, we always heard or saw trains
There were train tracks in front and behind my house
and my grandmother would cross the street to get on the train at the train depot so she could go to work in Cohoes
The North Second Avenue depot was built in the late 1800s and once carried passengers to Albany
It closed in the late 1960s and has been boarded up and crumbling ever since
According to the Times Union, after years of planning and nearly $150,000 in grants
the Mechanicville City Council voted to auction off the historic train station instead of turning it into a museum
The auction is set for May 2nd with a starting bid of $30,000
The city bought the station in 2012 for just a dollar
once calling it a key part of their revitalization plans

William Connors, who led a 2006 revitalization committee, said he was upset by the decision, especially since no public input was allowed. Supervisor Tom Richardson said they managed some basic repairs, but funding dried up. Connors said poor leadership and a lack of vision have left the city squandering a major opportunity.
Sadly, the city couldn't revitalize the building and create a museum. That was the original plan, but unfortunately, that plan is dead. Now, for just a mere thirty thousand dollars, someone will most likely level it and make it into a parking lot or garage.

A Capital Region mother claims she and her family
were booted from a Price Chopper store following a dispute over a stocking cart
Destiney Whalen detailed the alleged incident, which happened at the Mechanicville Price Chopper on North Central Avenue, in a post on the “West Side News” Facebook group on Wednesday
and their baby were shopping when they encountered a U-boat cart—a long
narrow cart commonly used by retail employees to stock shelves—blocking the aisle
“Being the gentleman he is,” her boyfriend moved the cart to make room for her stroller to pass,” she recalled
a store manager became upset over the action
confronting them in an “aggressive” manner
“She was very happy to chase us down after she put her hair up and escort us out of the store at 5:30 p.m
while we were there for dinner and diapers,” Whalen said
She noted that a younger employee stocking shelves at the time apologized to her family
but she felt bad for workers who appeared uncomfortable with what was happening
“I can’t imagine kicking a family out of their local grocery store because they moved a U-boat,” Whalen wrote
She also expressed frustration that what was supposed to be a routine grocery run for dinner and diapers turned into a stressful ordeal in front of her child
“It takes a miserable and unhappy person to look at my baby in the stroller and insist we leave,” she said
