Greens leader Adam Bandt has clung onto his Melbourne seat as members internally clash on the direction of the party after the loss of Brisbane seats
Bandt looks set to maintain his position despite a 5.4 per cent swing to Labor in his seat
as the party reckons with the “devastating” losses of firebrand Griffith MP Max Chandler-Mather and his Brisbane colleague Stephen Bates

The Greens still hope to retain the Queensland seat of Ryan

disappointing party strategists who hoped an advantageous redistribution would hand them a seat they have been trying to win for over a decade
One source told this masthead that the possibility of winning one extra Senate seat was proof the minor party just needs to better define itself and advocate more on the climate
“There was inconsistent and confused messaging from within the party
and it stemmed from a disagreement between those who wanted a more moderate approach and those who wanted to be bolder,” the source said
“We need to be bolder; we need to be seen as an alternative.”

The party argues that the collapse of the Liberal vote in Queensland meant more people shifted to Labor

Labor volunteers from Khalil’s team who were not authorised to speak publicly said they believed the ALP would hold off Ratnam’s challenge
Ratnam said she remained hopeful as scrutineering continued but she acknowledged it would take time before a result was known
Khalil was leading Ratnam by 0.68 per cent – or about 1100 votes out of 125,000 eligible voters

May has an exciting spectacle in store for stargazers
Melbourne's skies are set to sparkle with a super bright meteor shower called Eta Aquarid, described as “the second best meteor shower of the year for Australian sky watchers” by astronomy experts
The annual meteor shower – which is formed from debris from Halley’s comet – will light up the sky above Australia this week
May 7. The Eta Aquarid shower is a fast-moving and notoriously unpredictable show, with their high speed also making them appear brighter to the naked eye.
If you're keen to see these scintillating sights for yourself
Melbourne stargazers will have their best chance at seeing the Eta Aquarids between 2am and 5.40am local time from Monday
The meteor shower is set to reach its maximum around 2am on May 7
The best way to see them is to scan the northern horizon near the point of the Aquarius constellation
You’ll know you’re looking in the right place if you're looking at a spot where there's not much else to see except Saturn
you'll need a cloud-free sky and quite a lot of patience
as meteor sightings can be quite sporadic.
Though the meteor shower is set to be visible from Melbourne from 1.30am onwards for the next couple of days
it’s set to peak in the few hours before dawn on Wednesday
May 7 – when between 20 and 30 meteors are expected to light up the sky each hour
So, we've got the opportunity to watch our skies light up with some serious starry action. You’ll want to set those alarms, rug up and head outside to an ideal stargazing spot
away from city lights. It's not every night that you get to bear witness to a 2000-year-old celestial show.

An affordable housing register is being touted as a way to offload thousands of unsold, empty apartments in Melbourne
providing homes for key workers and tracking tax incentives for developers
is in talks with the federal government to launch a platform designed to attract private investment in affordable housing on a larger scale
It says the initiative has been well-received by key Labor ministers
from Housing All Australians.Credit: Alex Coppel
The register would allow property owners to list available apartments at below-market rates for key workers
while also allowing governments to track developers’ commitments made in exchange for incentives
It could also help address the surplus of unsold apartments in Melbourne – which experts say is leading to a slowdown in future housing supply – by offering people tax breaks to buy them and ensuring they then comply with obligations to rent them out affordably
This masthead revealed that there are 8000 completed apartments in metropolitan Melbourne – or 17 per cent of units completed between 2020 and 2024 – that developers have been unable to sell
These unsold apartments include those in suburbs earmarked for greater housing density under the state government’s activity centre proposal
raising concerns that the surplus could hinder developers from meeting ambitious housing targets
has remained coy about whether it supports the initiative
as it continues to face pressure to provide targeted tax relief
said anyone who owned housing could be on the register as long as there was a commitment to lease it at below-market rents for a period of time
He said it could allow the Victorian government to provide and easily track concessions to developers to move the glut of unsold apartments across Melbourne
“It’s about unlocking new forms of investment to allow affordable housing to be driven by the private sector
but providing full transparency to all levels of government in terms of the obligations that’s agreed to when the original affordable housing commitment is made by the original developer and government,” he said
“If we collaborate with federal and state governments
we could use those concessions to unlock private sector investment.”
Pradolin said he wanted people to be able to search for properties on the register via real estate listing websites as well
He wants the register – which is backed by Property Exchange Australia – to be up and running by next year
He said his organisation was in talks with the federal government to roll out the register nationally and that it had been well received by the housing and treasury ministers’ offices
“We expect those talks to continue,” Pradolin said
Independent property advisory firm Charter Keck Cramer has backed the register
which has support from across the property and community housing industry
and agreed it could be used in Victoria to help offload a glut of unsold apartments
“It will be a central register that will streamline and help this process and [the] government would be silly not to seriously consider it,” executive director Richard Temlett said
“It’s a very pragmatic way of actually giving transparency and governance to the mechanism that the government needs to implement.”
He said the government could offer stamp duty or other tax exemptions on the condition that the properties were placed on the register and used as affordable housing
Economist Saul Eslake said the register would not be a silver bullet to fix the housing crisis
He thinks the register could be used effectively to track the commitments developers make to local governments in exchange for the rezoning of land and a subsequent increase in value
“If it provides some incentive to invest A) in new housing and B) housing that is more affordable than might otherwise be built
Eslake said the idea of offering tax exemptions for people who buy unsold stock and lease it at below-market rates was worth considering
he emphasised the need to carefully evaluate the overall cost of such incentives
He believes some of the failure to sell thousands of apartments could be due to the commercial difficulty of building apartments suitable for families with young children
The Victorian government did not answer questions about its positions on the affordable housing register nor the impact of the glut of unsold apartments on its housing targets
It also did not comment on whether it was considering extending tax breaks

There were swings toward Labor across the entire country
Several prominent Liberals have lost their seats

One of the many surprises of the night has been Hughes, an unexpected gain for Labor from the Liberal Party.
Most of the inner-city independents look to have held their seats. Coupled with Labor's victory in Bennelong, that means the Liberal Party continues to hold none of the seats overlooking Sydney Harbour, its former heartland.
At the start of the campaign the Liberal Party was hoping to pick up a swag of seats in Melbourne. They look to have gone backwards instead.
Keith Wolahan is in trouble in Menzies, and shadow housing minister Michael Sukkar has been defeated in Deakin.
Labor has made some serious gains in the Sunshine State.
The win in Peter Dutton's seat of Dickson will grab the headlines, but they've also picked up nearby seats like Petrie and Longman, as well as Bonner and Forde.
Labor has picked up the eastern suburbs seat of Sturt, defeating Liberal MP James Stevens.
That result means that Labor now holds every single seat in metropolitan Adela
Western Australia has swung to Labor more modestly than the other states, but remember, that comes after a massive statewide swing of 10.5 per cent at the last election in 2022.
The government looks to have gained another seat in the west too, Moore, while Independent Kate Chaney is on track to hold her beachside seat of Curtin.
The apple isle has been a stand-out for the government, recording easily the largest swings of the states.
And the Liberals have been wiped out. They've lost Braddon, and second-term MP Bridget Archer has also been defeated in the seat of Bass.
The Coalition was hoping it could gain at least one of the Top End's two seats but Labor looks to have retained both.
Bean has turned out to be the most interesting race in the ACT. Independent Jessie Price has come second on first preferences, and further counting will be needed to know the winner.
The other two seats in the territory have been held by Labor.

Over a thousand protesters turned up in Melbourne May 1 to speak out against sweeping federal changes that have been enacted since President Donald Trump took office earlier this year
The afternoon rally was hosted by multiple groups, including the Space Coast Progressive Alliance, Awake Brevard, Brevard Dems, Brevard Action Alliance, and Stop Moms For Liberty, in conjunction with #50501 events nationwide. Over 1,000 demonstrations and rallies were held in every state and abroad
most taking place May 1 — historically known as May Day or International Workers' Day
Throngs of people gathered at the base of the Melbourne Causeway as speakers like former Brevard School Board member Jennifer Jenkins warned about concerns including Project 2025 and low teacher pay
They then proceeded to march across the causeway
garnering cheers and honks from many passersby
"Florida has been the testing ground where they're banning books, silencing teachers, and rewriting history," Jenkins said to the crowd
Protests large and small have been cropping up around Brevard this year
drawing out those who don't want to silently accept the changes enacted by the Trump administration
Joseph Cortez hoisted a sign that read "Corruption so bad this introvert is here" as drivers rolled past on the causeway
He said issues such as misinformation and the economy motivated him to show up
I try to talk to people on the other side," Cortez said
"I've been told I should just be quiet and let things be
When I see this much hate and this much going wrong
one of the principal organizers of the May Day protest
said it's the biggest march of its kind he's seen in the county since Trump was reelected
Despite Brevard being a Republican-leaning county
people have continued to reach out to him and others about keeping the demonstrations going
"We want to keep it peaceful because there's a lot of hostility out there," McDow said
"We're showing a collective voice and it's really amazing."People are very concerned about Trump's authoritarian leadership style
But there's a lot of concern about the economy and the tariffs and how that's going to affect us."

Undecided seats can be sorted into several categories
the Australian Electoral Commission selected the incorrect final two candidates
and is slowly redoing this count with the correct two candidates
From the small number of votes that have been realigned
the ABC has estimates of what the two candidate vote will be when all current votes in that seat are realigned
This category applies to Greens leader Adam Bandt’s Melbourne
and he’s currently estimated to be trailing Labor’s Sarah Witty by an estimated 2,896 votes
The ABC says the sample of votes counted so far may be skewed against Bandt
Other seats in this category are Labor-held Fremantle, where a teal is estimated to be ahead by just 196 votes, Labor-held Bendigo (Nationals lead Labor by an estimated 1,285 votes) and Labor-held Bean (an independent leads Labor by an estimated 206 votes)
This election was a disaster for the Coalition
which Labor won by 61.2–38.8 at the 2022 election
Bradfield, Goldstein and Kooyong are teal independent vs Liberal contests
The Liberals have surged on postals in all three
and Liberal Tim Wilson will regain Goldstein if the remaining postals behave like current postals
The teals look better in Bradfield and Kooyong
Bullwinkel, Menzies and Longman are standard two-party contests
and is more likely than not to win the other two
once left-leaning absent votes start being counted
Calwell is currently undecided because both major parties’ primary votes slumped
It’s possible that an independent could win from third or fourth by getting ahead of the Liberals then using their preferences to beat Labor
In Monash and Flinders
but a teal independent is close behind Labor and may move ahead of Labor after preferences from the Greens and other minor candidates
The Liberals will probably defeat the teal if these are the final two
Ryan and Wills are Labor vs Greens contests
then beat the Liberal National Party on the other left party’s preferences
The Greens are just ahead of Labor in Ryan at the moment
Wills is a standard two-candidate contest that Labor is currently winning comfortably
Current national primary votes are 34.8% Labor (up 2.2% since 2022)
1.9% Trumpet of Patriots (down 2.3% on United Australia Pary’s 2022 vote)
7.6% independents (up 2.3%) and 5.6% others (up 0.5%)
The Coalition does best and the Greens do worst on early postals
which have been added since election night
Absent votes need to be posted back to their home electorate before they can be counted
the Greens do best and the Coalition does the worst
As the major parties’ primary votes are low, there are many seats where Labor and Coalition candidates will not be the final two. There are currently 28 “non-classic” seats
where one of the major parties did not make the final two
The electoral commission’s first priority is to determine which candidate has won every seat
they will conduct a second count in all non-classic seats between the Labor and Coalition candidates
we will have a final official two-party result
but this won’t happen for at least a few weeks
The ABC’s current estimate for the two-party vote is a Labor win by 55.0–45.0, while The Poll Bludger estimates a Labor win by 54.1–45.9. The electoral commission’s current figure of 54.7–45.3 to Labor excludes all non-classic seats

Iconic Star Wars characters are coming to life at Melbourne Museum – in LEGO form
Ryan “The Brickman” McNaught has a fantasy career that’s hard to top: judge of TV show LEGO Masters and certified LEGO professional
McNaught has channelled all his skill and passion into creating a “galaxy first” LEGO Star Wars exhibition at Melbourne Museum
This cinematic-scale exhibition – which took more than 25,000 hours to complete
using more than 8 million LEGO bricks – offers visitors the chance to see some iconic Star Wars characters
spaceships and landscapes re-created in LEGO
as well take part in hands-on LEGO activities
such as building LEGO starfighters and custom lightsabers
it’s a rare chance to get up close with the galaxy far
Visitors will find classic characters created by the LEGO master
Anyone who’s ever tried to construct a small-scale LEGO Star Wars set will know what a challenge it can be
so it’s easy to imagine the skill needed to build detailed versions of full-sized characters and spacecraft – some of which are as big as four metres high
and has plenty of favourites pieces he’s excited to show off
“Over the years I’ve always loved a ‘cutaway’ model where you can see the inside of something awesome
my favourite [pieces] are the characters,” he says
but making a face that looks like someone is hard – so hard that there aren’t many people that can do it at all
As well as Star Wars characters in LEGO form
with visitors getting the chance to build some LEGO sculptures of their own
There will be interactive elements and engaging experiences for fans of all ages
“I think [I’m most excited by] the interactive components of the exhibition where our models hopefully inspire people to make their own stuff,” McNaught says
then having it scanned and watching it fly around in combat out the window of a Star Destroyer.”
The scene inside LEGO Star Wars: The Exhibition resembles a Star Wars film set
full-scale lightsabers and realistic starships
building the LEGO Star Wars exhibition was a painstaking labour of love
collaborative effort to get the exhibition off the ground
“It’s far from only me; we have a dedicated team of 38 people who make it happen,” McNaught says
engineering and building – there’s so much work that’s gone into it
I’ve personally been working on this project pretty much nonstop – apart from filming LEGO Masters – for three years.”
Getting this project off the ground was no easy task
McNaught and the team needed a lead time of six months just to source the rare and unusual LEGO bricks required for these one-off builds
the skill needed was “way over the next level”
Ryan McNaught in the Millennium Falcon cockpit
“The thing with this exhibition is it is about firsts,” he says
“There’s a reason the majority of the models we have made have never been done before
and these models are pushing the limits of what LEGO can do
imagine making the first ever life-sized Princess Leia and not doing it justice?”
Despite the thousands of hours and millions of bricks taken to bring the exhibition to life
McNaught feels as if he hasn’t even scratched the surface of the Star Wars universe
“The Star Wars galaxy is so content-filled I could make another two of this exhibition with all new things
It’s fair to say that “The Brickman” loves his job
He get a lot of joy out of all that planning and building with LEGO
and is excited by the impact that exhibitions such as this can have on visitors
“Hopefully I’m inspiring a Sally or Johnny to take over from me one day.”
visitors can continue their adventure by exploring the main Melbourne Museum galleries
with general admission included in all tickets

Small group booed and yelled at Bunurong elder Uncle Mark Brown’s welcome and Victorian governor’s acknowledgement of country
A man is expected to be charged with offensive behaviour after a group including a “known neo-Nazi” booed and heckled during the welcome to country at Anzac Day dawn ceremonies in Melbourne and Perth.
A small group of people booed and yelled throughout the welcome delivered by Bunurong elder Uncle Mark Brown at the 5:30am service at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance.
“This morning, I’m here to welcome everyone to my father’s country,” Brown said, speaking over the shouts.

The co-chairs of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria
condemned the “racist attack” and praised Brown’s “strength and resolve”
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a long and proud history of serving and sacrifice for this Country,” they said in a statement
Victoria police said they interviewed a 26-year-old Kensington man for offensive behaviour and directed him to leave the Shrine of Remembrance
They intend to proceed with a summons and expect the man will be charged
Victoria police declined to confirm reports of the man’s identity
The booing was allegedly led by a “known neo-Nazi”

A Coalition government would divert more than 10% of annual government funding for Creative Australia to a single cultural project and unspecified broadcasting programs if elected at Saturday’s federal election
sustainable and connected communities” section contained a pledge to “redirect” $33.2m of Creative Australia’s annual funding of $312m “to Melbourne Jewish Arts Quarter and supporting broadcasting”
The quarter is a planned new centre celebrating Jewish arts
food and shopping in Elsternwick in Melbourne
A Coalition spokesperson did not clarify what “supporting broadcasting” referred to
Creative Australia had rescinded its commission to Sabsabi and his curator
Last month, Labor announced $18m for the new Jewish Arts Quarter
which will include a relocated Jewish Museum of Australia
a new Holocaust museum and redevelopment of the Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library
Within days, Chandler announced her party would match Labor’s pledge for the project, which sits in the federal electorate of Macnamara, a previously safe Labor seat held by MP Josh Burns since 2019 which is in a tough three-cornered contest this election
the Liberal party’s costings showed that pledge had now more than doubled to almost $44m
with the first tranche of $33.2m to be drawn from Creative Australia’s coffers in the 2025-26 financial year
“The Coalition prefers to fund art rather than arts bureaucracy,” a Coalition spokesperson said
“So we will redirect some funding from Creative Australia towards Coalition priorities in the arts.”
Labor’s arts minister, Tony Burke, harked backed to a previous Liberal government decision on arts funding, which saw $104.7m redirected from Creative Australia – then called the Australia Council – to a separate kitty, to be dispersed at the discretion of the then Liberal arts minister George Brandis.

Labor confirmed the $18m it had pledged to the Jewish Arts Quarter would be funded separately from the Creative Australia budget
condemned what amounted to a 10.65% cut to Creative Australia’s 2025-26 funding
“It is an absolute disgrace that the Liberals’ only plan for the arts is a big cut to funding,” she said
“The arts contribute $112bn to our economy and our artists and workers in the creative industries deserve better
“We know from the last time that they were in government the Liberals will cut arts funding and attack artistic freedom.”

‘All Zionists are terrorists’ allegedly chanted outside court where Tayeh was appearing on charges relating to the alleged use of the same phrase
A high-profile Melbourne burger chain founder has faced court accused of using “insulting words” at a pro-Palestine rally last year as police arrested two other protesters for the same alleged offence on Tuesday
Activist sources told Guardian Australia that an elderly man led chants of “All Zionists are terrorists” outside the Melbourne magistrates court on Tuesday in a crowd of about 60 protesters
The protesters were showing support for Hash Tayeh
who was appearing in court after being charged last month with allegedly using the phrase at a rally in May 2024
A Victoria police spokesperson said two men were arrested on Tuesday after a planned protest outside the Melbourne magistrates court
“Officers maintained a strong presence to keep the peace and ensure community safety,” the spokesperson said.
“Two men were allegedly observed chanting an insulting phrase.”
Police said the two men, a 79-year-old from Preston and a 48-year-old from Reservoir, were expected to be charged on summons with using insulting words.
In March, police charged Tayeh with four counts of “using insulting words in public” for allegedly uttering the phrase “All Zionists are terrorists” during a rally in May last year.
Outside court on Tuesday, Tayeh said “standing up for innocent men, women and children who are slaughtered in cold bold is not controversial”.
“I will stand for any people who are persecuted. Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, atheist and beyond. Because injustice against any is injustice against all,” he said.
“Silence is not an option. When innocent blood is shed, we are obligated to speak, to resist and to fight with every breath we have.”
He said his court case was a “platform to expose the truth”.
Police laid the charges against Tayeh under a section of the state’s Summary Offences Act which prohibits profane, indecent or obscene language.
The offence has a maximum penalty of two months’ imprisonment for the first offence and six months for three or more offences.
The phrase has been denounced by Jewish groups, including the Jewish Community Council of Victoria.
Tayeh is due to reappear in the Melbourne magistrates court on 24 June.

The Victorians were cruising towards victory after Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen slotted a one-pointer that appeared to put his side up by seven with five minutes to go.
Read moreHowever, referee Gerard Sutton called play back due to a penalty for an elbow on the Raiders’ Joe Tapine by Melbourne lock Trent Loiero – the ball-carrier in the preceding tackle – spotted by the bunker.
Bellamy said he was disappointed. “For the last couple of minutes, [there were] a couple of lapses in our discipline there [that] probably cost us,” he said. “It’s a pretty hard one to take.”
After the field goal, the Storm players had run back into their half in preparation for a Raiders kick-off but had to reassemble when the bunker informed Sutton of Loiero’s foul play.
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said the referees got it right, although he agreed going back in time to uncover penalties was contentious.
“I don’t think we can go back too many passages of play and want to have the bunker scrutinise something, but look, it was missed and picked up, so now we were fortunate,” he said.
Following the incident, Canberra fullback Kaeo Weekes scored a sensational chip and chase try that allowed Jamal Fogarty’s conversion to lock the scores up 18-18, then the Raiders claimed victory in golden point thanks to a penalty goal.
Loiero was again the guilty party – this time for a high tackle – and the Raiders taunted the Queenslander after Sutton blew his whistle.
Storm captain Cameron Munster said he told Loiero afterwards to learn from it.
“I’ve had the highs of highs and lows of lows, in those games you don’t want to be that guy that clips the guy on the chin, and they go for two in the penalty,” he said.
“It’s a crucial game, crucial point, I’ve been there, been in grand finals where I’ve done some silly stuff, so I’ve just gone up to him and said ‘mate, learn from it’.”

Loiero was forlorn at full-time, wandering off by himself after shaking hands with the euphoric Raiders.
But he was not alone in his ill-discipline. Earlier in the golden point period, the Storm had another chance to take the lead with possession deep in the Raiders territory, but prop Stefano Utoikamanu appeared to step on Canberra hooker Tom Starling while he got up to play the ball.
Utoikamanu was sent to the sin bin along with Raiders’ prop Josh Papali’i who rushed into the ensuing melee.
“To turn the ball over when you’ve got the ball 15 metres from their line, if he was in the wrong, well, [Utoikamanu] needs to pick his discipline up,” Bellamy said. “At the end of the day, you can’t be giving the ball away in those positions.”
The victory takes Canberra to second place, ahead of a top-of-the-table clash against Canterbury at GIO Stadium on Saturday.
Melbourne won the right to host the 1956 Olympic Games by one vote over Buenos Aires.
French long-distance runner Alain Mimoun had tasted Olympic defeat on the track three times at the hands of Czech Emil Zátopek. However, in the marathon, it was Mimoun who pulled away to record a comfortable victory. He waited at the finish line for Zátopek, his old friend and great rival, who trotted home in sixth place.
The U.S. basketball team, led by Bill Russell and K.C. Jones, put on the most dominant performance in Olympic history. They scored more than twice as many points as their opponents and won each of their games by at least 30 points.
Prior to 1956, the athletes in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies marched in alphabetical order by National Olympic Committees. However, in Melbourne, following a suggestion by a young Chinese apprentice carpenter living in Australia named John Ian Wing, the athletes entered the stadium together during the Closing Ceremony as a symbol of global unity.
This was the first time that the Games had been held in Oceania.
To allow for the equestrian sports to be held and to avoid the problem of quarantine for horses entering Australia, the Games took place in two different cities (Stockholm and Melbourne), in two different countries (Sweden and Australia), on two different continents (Europe and Oceania) and in two different seasons (June and November). This is the only time in the Games' hundred-year existence that the unity of time and place, as stipulated in the Charter, has not been observed.
The International Olympic Committee had great political success in managing to bring together the two Germanys (East and West) within a combined team (EUA) competing under a black, red and yellow flag with the Olympic rings, and with "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's IX Symphony as their anthem. This practice would take place for the following two editions of the Games.
The Soviet invasion of Hungary provoked protests from numerous Western countries, and some of them, such as Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands, withdrew from the Games. On another matter, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq refused to participate in protest of the Franco-British Suez intervention. And the People's Republic of China refused to participate because of the presence of the Republic of China (Taiwan). This conflict would take 28 years to be resolved.
In fencing, the electric foil was introduced, and in swimming, the semi-automatic, digital-display timing device appeared.

After three hours of impassioned pleas and dueling science among dozens of dentists
the Melbourne City Council voted early Wednesday to stop adding fluoride to the city's drinking water
the City Council decided to discontinue the practice
after more than 40 speakers at the marathon meeting that lasted into the wee hours of Wednesday
More: How do you feel about fluoride in your drinking water? Cast your vote
"This is the latest meeting we've ever had," said Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey
"This is something very important," he said
adding that new science and customers' lack of informed consent justifies the removal
Pros and cons of fluoridation: How do I know if my city water has fluoride in Florida? Cities that do, don't fluoridate
"They have a right to say 'no' to something," Alfrey said just before the vote
as one man in the audience waved a hand-held American flag
City Councilwoman Mimi Hanley was the dissenting vote
saying dental society members convinced her of its benefit
and they go to the dentist a lot more," Hanley said
"Fluoride in the water is not the silver bullet
it's not going to stop every single cavity."
"My main concern is that we didn't give people consent," Bassett said
"We really shouldn't give it to people that don't want it."
Melbourne has added fluoride to its water since 1966
Alfrey said adding fluoride to drinking water is a "practice
"More and more people don't want this in their water."
as well as a recent major court ruling that bolsters the "anti-fluoride" side of the debate
Community water fluoridation is the process of adjusting the amount of fluoride in drinking water to a level recommended for preventing cavities
but not at the levels recommend for preventing tooth decay
Supporters of adding fluoride to water say drinking fluoridated water helps keep teeth strong and reduces cavities
Detractors say it should be up to individual families whether they want to ingest water that has added fluoride
About a dozen or so dentists who spoke at the meeting disagreed that the science shows the risks of fluoride outweigh its benefits
"I've never seen severe dental fluorosis," she said of the tell-tale discoloration of young children's teeth from consuming too much fluoride
But she has seen lots of cavities in children who lack health care
we have a significant access-to-care issue," she said
Other dentists said they favor fluoride removal
cited peer-reviewed research that has found lower IQs in children who drink water with fluoride compared to those who don't
A European study found that children drinking water in areas with high levels of naturally occurring fluoride had lower IQs than other children
The levels of fluoride those children consumed was much higher than is used in community fluoridation
I can't fix cognitive impairment," Sheldon said
but no longer does because of newer science
Alfrey's move to remove fluoride is in line with a recommendation from Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who heads the Florida Department of Health. In November, Ladapo announced guidance recommending against community water fluoridation
saying there was a potential neuropsychiatric risk associated with fluoride exposure
The American Dental Association pushed back hard against Lapado's statements
Ladapo’s misinformed and dangerous comments regarding community water fluoridation,” said Brett Kessler
president of the American Dental Association
evidence-based science when making public policy decisions
Ladapo to call community water fluoridation ‘medical malpractice’ and call on all municipalities to end its practice is a dangerous statement that stands to harm the oral and overall health of all Floridians.”
Palm Bay voted earlier this month not to pursue repair the fluoridation machines at its water plants
There has been no added fluoride in the city's water since 2017
Brevard County stopped adding fluoride to its Mims treatment plant in 2021
The two private plants the county took over in Barefoot Bay and San Sebastian Woods never added the chemical to their water
In contrast, the Leesburg City Commission in December voted 3-2 to proceed with previously approved plans to begin adding fluoride to its drinking water
Stopping fluoridation of drinking water also has been bolstered by a recent groundbreaking federal court ruling. On Sept. 24, U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to regulate the “unreasonable risk” the court concluded that fluoridation of drinking water poses, ruling in favor of the nonprofit Food & Water Watch Inc
Chen ruled the evidence suggests that the department of Health and Human Service’s “optimal” level of drinking water fluoridation (0.7 milligrams per liter) poses an "unreasonable risk" of reduced IQ in children

Satellite Beach sent a website about the debate but has yet to take a position
according to Melbourne's meeting agenda documents
Indian Harbour Beach City Manager John Coffey had asked via email for Melbourne to hold off on the decision until his City Council can consider the matter
An effort that Alfrey — then a District 5 City Council member — helped push to stop adding fluoride to Melbourne water failed in November 2019 by a 4-3 vote
But all four supporters of fluoride at the time have since left the City Council

My wife and I frequently tackle the 17-hour journey between Texas and Australia
Our usual Qantas flight from Dallas to Melbourne is considered one of the longest in the world
After years of flying it in economy, my wife and I recently accumulated enough Qantas air miles to experience the long-haul flight in business class
which would typically cost thousands of dollars a seat
The dedicated business-class check-in and priority boarding meant our journey got off to a stress-free start
We also received a form similar to a hotel's room service card that allowed us to preorder breakfast
I checked boxes for my morning preferences and loved that I could confidently maximize precious sleep time without missing a meal
My wife and I had the middle pair of seats in our row in business class
where two seats occupied the space of four economy spots
Each pod featured a 16-inch HD screen loaded with hundreds of movies and TV shows
and enough space to store a small carry-on bag within arm's reach
we each had a fully reclining seat that would later transform into a proper bed
The multicourse dinner rivaled meals I've had at high-end restaurants
starting with a confit duck salad with tomato
The main course was a seasoned beef fillet served with corn purée
As someone who usually avoids sweet desserts
I enjoyed finishing my meal with a curated cheese selection paired with red wine
The food choices didn't stop with the main meals — business-class passengers had access to a dedicated self-service area with premium snacks
Flight attendants also regularly walked through the cabin to offer us water and light refreshments
ensuring we stayed well-hydrated during the long journey
I changed into my complimentary Qantas pajamas in the bathroom and returned to my pod to find it had been transformed into a comfortable sleeping space
The crew had laid out a thick mattress pad
and I had enough room to fully stretch out
Curling up in a bed was way nicer than contorting into increasingly uncomfortable positions while trying to nap upright in economy
For once, I was able to sleep on a plane with ease — and I did so for nine hours
Our business-class perks also continued on the ground
We were among the first passengers off the plane
and having priority-tagged luggage meant we got our bags quickly
We were in an Uber to our next destination within 30 minutes of landing
By upgrading to business class
our 17-hour journey transformed from an exhausting ordeal into a luxurious experience
Despite arriving in Melbourne at 5:30 a.m.
I stayed awake all day and didn't experience the foggy head and zombie-like state I always feel after long-haul flights
I attribute this lack of jetlag to getting a full night's worth of rest on the plane
Business class can feel out of reach for many travelers since one flight can cost thousands each way
But trying to use frequent-flyer and credit-card points to upgrade can be a great value — especially on long-haul routes like this
It'll be challenging to return to the economy cabin for my next trip
but I'm already saving points for our next business-class adventure
Wurundjeri elder Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin said she was informed by the club on Friday afternoon that she was no longer required to address the crowd before the match at AAMI Park.

The cancellation came after several people interrupted the Welcome to Country at a Melbourne dawn service
who has performed the welcome to country at Melbourne events for many years
and asked her to continue with her ceremony as originally planned
Two First Nations groups were also scheduled to perform
but after the confusion they all decided to cancel their performances
“We were all just dumbfounded,” Aunty Joy told Nine
We want to make them [realise] that this was wrong

we are not going to stand by and let our elders be disrespected,” Terrick told ABC News
The Storm later released a statement blaming a “miscommunication” for the cancellation

“There was a miscommunication of expectations regarding the use [of] welcome to country at Melbourne Storm events throughout the year,” the club said
“We acknowledge and accept the timing and miscommunication was not ideal and we have spoken to the groups concerned this afternoon.”
Storm coach Craig Bellamy said after the game he “didn’t know anything about that”
“That’s the first I’ve heard of that,” Bellamy said after the Storm beat Rabbitohs 24-16
The pre-match Anzac Day ceremony, including the welcome to country, was performed without a hitch earlier in the day at the MCG as Collingwood faced Essendon in their traditional AFL clash
Victoria is now home to Australia’s first centre dedicated to supporting people with cystic fibrosis – a significant development that demonstrates the states global leadership in life sciences
I grew up on the Gold Coast on Australia's east coast and loved it
But after living overseas for three years in Canada and London
my husband and I wanted to settle somewhere new when we returned to Australia
Although I loved a lot about my life in Melbourne
Here's what I loved about living there — plus
Melbourne is known for being one of the most multicultural cities in the world
I think the best one is the diversity of the food
You can find just about any cuisine in Melbourne. If you want to eat Ethiopian cuisine one night
The city is surrounded by top-notch wineries
so it's also easy to access mind-blowing libations
Melbourne is home to so many different galleries and theaters that it feels like the city has something for everyone
Likewise, if you're into sports, Melbourne is the place to be. The city hosts many world-class sporting events
from the Australian Open to major cricket matches
Its central business district is filled with hidden laneway boutiques
and quirky stores you'll find nowhere else
If you want to visit mainstream and big-name stores
Melbourne's bigger shopping centers have everything you need
there are open-air markets and farmers markets in most municipalities
The inner fashionista in me also loved the city's secondhand-shopping scene
I'd often spend weekends taking myself to one of the area's many vintage markets in search of treasures
Melbourne is dotted with beautiful parks in the heart of the central business district and surrounding areas
I always enjoyed wandering the tree-lined pathways through the Fitzroy Gardens or walking around the Royal Botanic Gardens
It felt special to be able to reconnect with nature amid the buzz of the cityscape
Melbourne is known for its unpredictable climate — so much so that its frequent "four seasons in one day" even inspired a song
It's not uncommon to experience drastic weather changes in the span of 24 hours — a warm
we had our heater running right up until mid-November — only a few weeks out from summer in Melbourne
Living in Melbourne
we had to get used to driving long distances across the huge city
The Greater Melbourne area is over 3,800 square miles — for context
and it can be time-consuming to visit friends and family just a few neighborhoods over
Our house was on the south side and my sister lived in a leafy inner suburb called Elwood
A trip to see her and my niece often took us up to an hour in the car
so each visit felt like quite a time commitment
but I still found its cost of living to be quite high
It's one of Australia's most expensive cities and placed in the top 50 most expensive cities in the world
based on Numbeo's most recent cost of living index
We couldn't afford a home in Melbourne unless we moved far from the city center and deep into the suburbs
We ended up moving to the small town of Bright
located in the foothills of the Australian Alps
but life is a lot easier and cheaper for us in our small town
A trippy thing happens when you fly to Australia
The monitors on the seat back in front of you display the location of your jet
Pretty soon the west coast of America disappears off the right side of the screen
and nothing immediately replaces it on the left side
It’s a wild realization that the place you’re visiting requires a direct jump over the largest puddle on the planet
but any qualms with that are washed away by what comes next: You cross the international date line and the equator at nearly the same time
From Wednesday to Friday and from winter to summer
it’s not just another day and another season — you’re transported to another world of golf.
Below is a synopsis of lessons learned at all three
If Kingston Heath were Scottish and not Australian
but I’m not sure it would leave you feeling different
your ball moves on the ground just like it does in July at Carnoustie
And like some of the links courses on Scotland’s eastern seaboard
that puts a ceiling on this course’s rank
There are no vistas or bodies of water to gaze over
It’s just grass and sand and brush and trees — all woven together in a way that reveals itself only once you’re on top of it
Kingston Heath is rather welcoming off the 1st tee
located just outside the clubhouse windows
The boundaries of each hole start to cinch inward
The preferred angles into its greens look one way on the tee and feel very different from the fairway.
It allows for bunkers to hide behind other bunkers
and for corners of the green to be much bigger (or smaller) than they appear
The difficulty of shots at Kingston Heath is not greater than what you’ll find elsewhere in the Sandbelt
but the result of this deceitful routing is your brain must be switched ON at all times
Four hours of maneuvers that leave you feeling accomplished if you can squeeze out something in the 70s or 80s.
The best opening hole and best hole (period) on our trip both took place at Victoria Golf Club
the course our entire group agreed was better than its rank of 96th-best in the world
There may not be a more tempting hole than Victoria’s 1st
parallel with the Magnolia Drive-esque entrance to the property.
Everyone can go for Victoria’s 1st green
You don’t if your typical ball flight is a draw
you also sneaky don’t want to hit a fade
The smartest play is something that rolls up just short and left of the green
but that requires a carry over perfectly placed fairway bunkers left
And anything that leaks out right will leave you with the most daunting approach in the game: a 40-yard bunker shot
it’s one of those handshakes with your future father-in-law who wants to remind you who is boss in this household.
The 1st at Victoria GC in Melbourne. 254-yard, downhill par-4. A handshake opener! Not exactly. Fairway asks for a draw, but the tiny green is accessible only with a fade. Hard pan bunkers don't offer much for spin.I love this hole so much. pic.twitter.com/gSYuvuhF2l
but it isn’t even the best on property
That distinction goes to Victoria’s 15th
a softly bending dogleg left that measures about 315 yards from the back tees
A mess of bunkers lines the left side of the fairway
which gets progressively thinner as you move toward the green
But the hole tells you a simple thing up front: play whatever you’d like off the tee
Going long bounds you into a low gully with tight lies
how short do you want to play it for safety off the tee
Our foursome took four different clubs off the tee
made three very different pars and one triple bogey
prepped us for Royal Melbourne’s West course — the crown jewel of Aussie golf — by referring to it as a baked-out Augusta National
And while most every comparison to ANGC feels irresponsible — and I held my doubts — this one doesn’t
Royal Melbourne does a lot of what Augusta National does
The movement of land isn’t quite as drastic
You play down these heaves of wide-open land on par-4s and then shoot back up them on par-3s
There isn’t a hole on property that feels like intermission
what Royal Melbourne offers you is endless variety
Which makes for a string of 18 holes you can immediately play back in your mind
And what the course asks in the process is: What kind of shots can you hit
You’re going to want them all out here
That’s what a top 10 course in the world should stand for

This move comes as the league aims to expand its international reach
despite challenges such as tariffs and concerns regarding player safety from the Players Association
the NFL has attempted to engage Australian audiences before but faced mixed reactions
the league has planned games in other international cities
the NFL's strategy heavily centers on revenue generation rather than player development in these regions
Concerns from the NFL Players Association highlight potential risks for player safety and health when competing in unfamiliar venues
The focus on international games raises questions about the balance between financial gain and the well-being of players
which some stakeholders argue could compromise player safety
As the NFL continues its push for global expansion
it may face increasing scrutiny over player welfare and the implications of playing in untested venues
Future international ventures will likely be closely monitored for their impact on the players and overall engagement with local audiences
While the NFL's international game strategy is driven by profit
it raises important questions about player health and safety
balancing these concerns with the financial benefits will be crucial for its long-term international success
