Cheltenham Township shared updates regarding plans for the Enclave at Melrose Park
Ownership submitted a preliminary land development proposal to the township in February which calls for a Class 3 mixed-use development of commercial/retail
158 age-restricted units (134 townhomes and 24 flats)
additional improvements include approximately 45 acres of open space
According to a response to the Montgomery County Planning Commission’s review
the pending application is “for the Phase 1 approvals only and further pedestrianized and commercial development will be provided in greater detail in future phases related to the retail
and potential Township amenity components.”
From the Township Design section of the response:
The townhome layout has been revised to provide for 14-ft driveway openings for each lot
creating individual driveways for each lot
as opposed to the continuous flush curb along townhome blocks that was previously proposed
the redesign also provides more opportunities for street trees and supplemental plantings to be added along internal road networks
A waiver is no longer being sought for driveway widths.Although the plan as proposed exceeds zoning requirements for parking
additional on-street parking has been provided throughout the development at the request of the County
in an effort to increase efficiencies and maximize parking opportunities in the additional areas
a waiver for parking orientation is now required
If the Township would prefer not to grant a partial waiver for these new parking areas
the parking can be modified to comply (but will result in less additional parking than the County is seeking).Applicant disagrees that alley-access is advisable for any townhomes in the community
Alleys will significantly increase impervious on the site
are not consistent with the general residential vernacular throughout the Township
the plans have been modified to adjust several townhouse cluster locations to increase the number of townhouses facing onto landscaped greens across roadways rather than onto other townhouses
The plan also proposes “a 10-ft wide trail section to the western property limits to tie into existing cartways at the Tacony Creek floodplain
and extends new sidewalk along Ashmeade Road with a 10-ft trail extending to the County property limits
pedestrian crossing facilities are currently planned at the Tookany Creek Parkway and Ashmead Road intersection
A 20-ft wide easement is provided around the 10-ft Tookany Trail extension within the property on the southern portion of the property.”

has submitted preliminary land development plans for the Enclave at Melrose Park in Cheltenham Township
The club closed for good on Sunday
“It’s still a land development plan
They went through the zoning process and got the inspection
and now they’re moving forward,” Henry Sekawungu
the township’s director of building and zoning
told Glenside Local.” It’s a big project
We’re reviewing it for compliance across all committees before it heads to the board.”
The application calls for a Class 3 mixed-use development of commercial/retail
The waiver request below was included in their submission:
including 130 55+ housing units and assisted living facilities
JC Melrose Country Club purchased the property in 2004 then sold the property in 2021 to 7600 Tookany Creek Parkway CRCP, LLC, which is associated with BG Capital
More information about the land development plans can be found here
In related news, the forthcoming House of Magic at 101 S Easton Road has applied for an exterior LED sign ahead of their anticipated grand opening in April
“There’s an application that’s going through the process
They’re looking at a digital LED marquee sign,” Sekawungu said
Gratz College announced that it will depart the Mandel Education Campus in Melrose Park (7605 Old York Road) and lease a building located at 315 York Road in Jenkintown this summer
The 3,700 sf space will support the college’s staff and provide ample space for continued community programming in the Old York Road community
The new Gratz site will add valued operations to Jenkintown’s “Piazza on the Square” mixed use development
The agreement with Lindy Property Management Company also includes access to the adjacent “Uptown” event venue to maintain Gratz’s educational and cultural programs
“We are thrilled to remain firmly rooted in the Old York Road community,” Gratz President Zev Eleff said
“I hope Gratz will remain an anchor and incubator of Jewish wisdom for many years to come.”
“Carolyn and I are thrilled that Gratz College will be at The Piazza on the Square
our corporate office for Lindy Communities,” said Alan Lindy of Lindy Property Management Company
“Gratz College will enhance the vitality of Jenkintown
we are especially gratified that Gratz is joining The Piazza.”
The move to Jenkintown is a multiphase project
with a long-term goal to broaden the use of the space as a convener site for local Jewish nonprofits
The college is in early discussions with congregations and Jewish agencies on how to cultivate potential synergies and partnerships
Gratz will utilize the Jenkintown location to accommodate the college’s in- person staff and some weekly noncredit adult classes while renovations are made to the new Bala Cynwyd campus
Gratz has partnered with OZ Collaborative and Caritas Construction to reimagine the Main Line campus
Construction is slated to start in June 2025 and will be completed in early 2026
Gratz will continue selected operations in Bala Cynwyd
“This is an exciting time for Gratz College,” said David Brawer
Chair of Gratz College’s Board of Governors
“The moving of our campus to Bala Cynwyd and the leasing of our new site in Jenkintown will provide the College with opportunities to expand our programs and provide much needed meeting spaces for both the Main Line and Old York Road communities.”
Since purchasing the Bala Cynwyd campus
the college has onboarded daily learning opportunities and attracted more than 150 regular attendees under the supervision of Daniel Levitt
Director of the Daniel and Louise Cohen Adult Jewish Learning Program
the college was granted the required zoning relief by Lower Merion Township to construct a link building to connect the two existing buildings
The link better secures the campus with a single point of entry
Gratz was awarded a $150,000 security grant by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to furnish the link building
The 14,500 sf Bala Cynwyd campus will include a cafe
and a theater that will feature the Dimensions in Testimony Holocaust survivor interactive technology
the College has raised $4.5 million of a total $6 million capital project

announced that it has entered into a “strategic partnership” with the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia regarding the long-term future of the Mandell Education Campus at 7601 Old York Road
control of the 60,000 sf Ann Newman Building will be transferred to the Jewish Federation in July 2025
at which time the college will leave the building
the Federation has purchased Gratz’s equity stake in the Mandell Campus
Both sides declined to disclose the size of Gratz College’s equity stake
according to the Philadelphia Business Journal
The college is searching for a new space for administrative offices and programming near the Mandell Campus. The 28-acre campus also houses the Perelman Jewish Day School
the Jewish Federation will collaborate with remaining tenants and local stakeholders to develop a strategic plan that explores all options for maximizing the campus’s value and impact in supporting the local Jewish community.”
originally purchased in 1985 from the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart by a group led by Marcel Groen
was transferred to the Federation following a $2.1 million sale
Gratz College purchased the Levering Mill Tribute House in Bala Cynwyd for $1.8 million in July
“This partnership plays a crucial role in our broader strategy to sustain and invigorate Jewish life in Elkins Park and along the Old York Road corridor,” Michael Balaban
CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia
“We are proud to work with Gratz College on this initiative
By engaging closely with all agencies and stakeholders
we aim to ensure that the Mandell Campus continues to serve community interests effectively.”
moved from 10th Street and Tabor Road to Melrose Park and invested $3 million in constructing a dedicated building on the site
The school currently has around 500 students
certificate and continuing education for professionals
Gratz is renowned for its robust graduate programs in Education
and Antisemitism Studies,” the college said
“These programs leverage advanced online learning modalities
leaving much of the 60,000-square-foot Newman building underutilized.”
“This is an exciting period of growth for Gratz College
in ways that are significantly different from our work forty years ago,” said Gratz College President Zev Eleff
“We are eager to rightsize our physical plant and identify a new location that will continue to serve our Old York Road community.”
A mockup of the new playground equipment coming to Melrose Park in the historic Melrose Heights neighborhood
A rusting step on the playground at Melrose Park in the Melrose Heights Neighborhood
A worn down piece of play equipment sits in front of a trash can and a splash pad at Melrose Park
Melrose Park's playground and splash pad will get a $280,000 makeover in the coming months after a years-long collaboration with the historic Melrose Heights neighborhood
The equipment update is phase one of an effort to improve the park
Melrose Park will soon receive a more than a makeover, with a new playground and splash pad coming to the neighborhood park this fall
Columbia City Council approved the project during its Aug
It will include multiple new play structures for younger and older kids
a swing set with toddler and accessible seats
a Columbia city landscape architect and park planner
said the new equipment is part of an ongoing partnership with the Melrose Heights community to update the park
which has become a spot for neighbors to "meet and gather and socialize and play."
Joshua Shelton, the president of the Historic Melrose Heights Neighborhood Association
said the current playground has a few issues that residents have been advocating to improve
Much of the play equipment is old and rusted
The splash pad is also dated and requires a staff member to turn it on and off
which means it is sometimes forgotten and unusable — or results in wasted water
Shelton said the community has worked with the city to update the park since he moved to the neighborhood in 2016
he said communication with city staff has been consistent and helpful
City staff attended Melrose Heights meetings regularly and worked with community leaders to create a master plan for the park that addressed many of their concerns
The project will fix some of the residents' concerns with the park
lack of shade and the inefficient splash pad
But it will also incorporate a more modern type of play
Old playgrounds are very directional and obvious "because you go up a set of steps
over a bridge and down the slide," Martin said
The new playground will give children more choices and room to play
components that give children many more options to play on it
using their imagination to play on it in a number of different ways," Martin said
"We find that to be much better solution."
The new park will include climbing blocks surrounding what would typically be a simple slide
a chair that operates like a zip line and a small climbing tent that smaller children can hide under
"Families and children just flock to them," Martin said
The updated playground equipment is just phase one of the Melrose Park project
and Martin said that it is mostly because of budget restraints
Martin said the city finds funding in several different ways
including grants or capital improvement requests
These methods often require some flexibility with timing
Having a master plan is helpful for being prepared to propose a second phase of the project as soon as money is available
"We had enough funding to build the playground and splash pad
We're also implementing a walkway that would connect these elements along with some green space in the park," Martin said
"But the master plan that we developed included more components that once we have funding available
The first phase of improvements totaled $238,878 and was funded through the city's general fund
This cost is higher than what most playground companies quote on their websites
which typically range from $150,000 to $200,000 for higher-quality play sets
But Martin said construction industry costs are higher in general
and the price is comparable to other parks built by the city
He said it is also unique that the cost includes both a new playground and splash pad
as the equipment is usually done separately
Shelton said he thinks the park improvements are worth the cost
"I think the community has been advocating for a park for a really long time
and we're excited to get it," Shelton said
to the kind of next generation of neighbors that have a place to play on that's both kind of fun with
Martin said because the second phase is early in the process
but the project is far along in the planning process
It will include improving the basketball court to be more multi-use
adding shade over the playground equipment
and improving landscaping and site amenities
Melrose Heights community members will get to vote on the playground's colors in the coming weeks
and Martin said he expects the project to be completed in about two months
basketball courts and community garden are expected to stay open during construction
Shelton said he is looking forward to the park becoming an even better gathering spot for the diverse community — from young children and their parents to pet owners
a focus on parks is saying we're investing in our people," Shelton said
"We're investing in our citizens and their needs
So I think it's a great thing to spend money on parks."

CHELSEA – Families who are looking for a change of scenery or a place to take their children for a few minutes of outdoor playtime may explore the city’s new playground behind the Chelsea Community Center
City and county officials celebrated the opening of the playground at Melrose Park at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday
“This entire complex is something that we’ve been working on for several years
and it is such a great example of what can happen when you have partnership between a municipality and the county that it’s in,” Chelsea Mayor Tony Picklesimer said
“There’s no way we could do anything this size without the cooperation from the Shelby County Commission.”
The name “Melrose” in Melrose Park pays homage to Chelsea’s beginnings
“The historians around our area tell us that over a century ago
what we now call Chelsea was called Melrose,” Picklesimer said
“There was a train station here … a Melrose station here and then a Melrose station up the line somewhere
The railroad made the decision that one of them had to change their name
and this area we now call home was changed from Melrose to Chelsea in the early 20th century.”
Picklesimer commended City Engineer Keith Hager for his vision for and work on the playground project
said the Shelby County Commission was proud to be a part of the project
which gives residents another outlet for outdoor recreation
“We’re trying to grow outdoor activities,” Scroggins said
you’ve seen a lot of people outside doing things they’ve never done before
The recreation industry is booming right now.”
The county is also partnering with Chelsea on a community trails project
The playground at Melrose Park is situated behind the Chelsea Community Center
We want to create a place where families can come and spend time together,” Picklesimer said
“We welcome people from all over to come and enjoy this playground with their kids.”

Ron Serpico’s roots run deep into the soil of Melrose Park
His paternal grandparents moved to the near western suburb from Italy more than a century ago
and his mom moved there with her family when she was an infant
Ralph “Babe” Serpico and Josephine Luzzi were married at Our Lady of Mt
Carmel Church and raised four boys in the community
Ron was surrounded by nearly four dozen extended family members
“It was great growing up around so many aunts
the entire village was like one big family.”
Melrose Park was overwhelmingly Italian American when Ron was young
and he has fond memories of Neapolitan boarders sitting outside his grandmother’s home in their sweaters and ties
of bocce games played for glasses of homemade wine in her backyard
and of enormous parties at his dad’s house the Saturday of feast week
“My mom used to walk with the Branda candle house in the procession for as long as I could remember,” he explains
I’ve walked with the Branda family in the morning and at the front of the procession in the afternoon
Proviso East High School and Illinois State University before pursuing a law degree at DePaul University and going into practice back home
was the only significant time he spent living outside the village limits
His dad was a longtime Democratic committeeman
and it was only a matter of time before Ron followed in his footsteps
and I would go everywhere with him,” he explains
and I had the youth and the energy and the love of Melrose Park
and Ron immediately set to work making his vision for Melrose Park a reality
he helped usher his beloved village into the 21st century
Village Hall is now surrounded by the Guy C
Ralph “Babe” Serpico Athletic Field and Sam Cerniglia Memorial Park thanks to Ron’s initiative
He spearheaded the creation of a railroad overpass at 25th Avenue and rallied seven suburbs to execute an award-winning overhaul of the area water system
he privatized the village’s ambulance service
assuring that each ambulance arrives on the scene with a paramedic
“I think I’m most proud of that improvement
His dedication to the welfare of his constituents led him to create the Melrose Park Sports and Family Benefit Fund in 1997
the fund has donated more than $2 million to local youth and senior causes
nothing feels better than doing something that improves the lives of your residents,” Ron explains
Ron has overseen the transformation of hundreds of acres of abandoned industrial land
cleared the way for a cutting-edge renovation of the Al Piemonte Ford dealership
sparked the revival of the once-moribund Melrose Crossing shopping center
Menard’s and Tony’s Finer Foods to the village
“I’m proud of the growth and change we’ve brought to the village.”
His multifront efforts paid off when Governor Pat Quinn presented Melrose Park with his Hometown Award in 2013 and Chicago magazine named the village the best area for first-time home buyers in 2019
the Melrose Park family has grown to include a vibrant Mexican-American population
offering them jobs with the village and creating a Center for Integration and Development that teaches English as a second language to adults
provides legal aid and offers small-business assistance
and I see the Italian-American community when my grandparents were just starting out,” Ron observes
family-oriented and Catholic; they’ve braved discrimination and prejudice to make a better life for their kids; they’re doing jobs that no one else wants to do; and their kids and grandkids are going to college and joining the American mainstream
but I’m just as proud to be the mayor of my whole community
I want to celebrate all our victories and make Melrose Park a better place for us all to live.”
Everybody knows what mayors do
“We wear a lot of hats,” she says of the post she’s held since 2001
we do all the jobs that no one else does.”
freedom of information officer and chief local election official
She’s also more than happy to answer any questions that come her way
“I’ll be at the bank and someone will come up to me and say that they need a tree trimmed or a sidewalk fixed
Mary Ann is proud that Melrose Park employees are required to live in the village
“It gives us a real sense of investment in the community that we serve,” she says
“And it gives our residents great access because we shop at the same grocery stores and take our clothes to the same cleaners.”
Mary Ann’s paternal grandparents came to Melrose Park from Potenza
He and Carmella met during family visits in the summer
became pen pals and eventually fell in love
and my dad moved here to get married in 1950,” Mary Ann says
Her maternal grandmother began the family tradition of carrying a candle house in the Feast of Our Lady of Mt
and Mary Ann is honored to walk in her nonna’s footsteps as the annual act of devotion approaches its 100th anniversary
people always mention the feast,” she points out with pride
and her involvement with the Missionaries Sisters of St
A member of their Provincial Guild since 1993
she is a past president and longtime chair of the Dinner Dance and St
“Sister Michael was my kindergarten teacher
and she always wanted me to join the guild,” she explains
When Sam Pitassi was attending Proviso East High School in Maywood
it was a place of racial unrest and discord
The situation got so bad at one point school administrators asked police officers from Melrose Park and other western suburbs to patrol the halls
“I admired their commitment and resolve in keeping us safe,” Sam recalls
my uncle and godfather (Nick Perrino) was a police officer in Chicago in the 1960s
He inspired me to pursue law enforcement as a career.”
The son of Peter and Christine (nee Millonzi) Pitassi
Sam moved to Melrose Park with his family from the Grand Avenue Italian enclave in Chicago when he was 4
he earned an associate’s degree in police science at Triton College in 1972 and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Lewis University in 1974
He joined the Melrose Park Police Department that same year; married Rosa Ruotolo
in 1985; and steadily rose through the ranks until he was appointed chief in 2007
That position was upgraded to director in 2016
Sam finds it easy to relate to the younger officers under his command
“When they’re working on holidays and dealing with changing shifts in a job that tends to keep them away from their families
“I enjoy being able to provide guidance to fellow officers.”
That compassion earned him a letter of commendation from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve
a national organization that strengthens ties between employers and the military personnel who work for them
He also earned a special mayoral commendation in 2001 and the Man of the Year Award from the Flowers of Italy Club in 2008
As much as law enforcement has evolved in the 40 years since he entered the force
“Everything has changed when it comes to the economy
“One thing that will always be the same is our mission to keep the public safe.”
Sam is proud of the fact that his son has joined the force
and he’s equally proud to be able to protect the community he grew up in
and I plan on spending the rest of my life here
I’m going to work to make sure that this is the most professional department it can be.”
Growing up in Melrose Park
Rick Beltrame didn’t have to look very far to know which direction in life to head
Both his father and brother were police officers for the village
and he knew he wanted to serve and protect in one capacity or another
Holy Cross High School and Western Illinois University
where he earned a bachelor of science in social justice
he’s lived his entire life in Melrose Park
and when the call came from the Melrose Park Fire Department
which he looks back upon as the high point in his career
especially with my dad serving on the police force,” he says
“I never thought I would be in this position
and now I’m able to make decisions every day that help the community.”
Rick recalls his years as a fireman fondly
And they become your family for that one day,” he explains
The key to being a good fire chief is managing each firefighter differently
“You have to deal with those personalities to get the best work out of them: not the most
“You have to be able to get respect from your men so they will work for you and do their job.”
it was only a matter of time before the Our Lady of Mt
Carmel Feast Committee and Flowers of Italy honored him as Man of the Year
“It’s a fulfilling job where you help people who need help,” he says
“I feel lucky and blessed to be able to reach the position of fire chief in the village I’ve lived in my whole life.”
There is an electric charge that runs through Gary Marine every time he steps into the office
He has a hard time controlling his enthusiasm for his job and his love for his town and family
That electricity radiates from him as he goes out to the Public Works garage to check on a utility truck he’s bringing back to life
Melrose Park’s Director of Public Works was raised along with five brothers on Chicago’s West Side
He has lived in Melrose Park for 48 years and has spent 47 of those years married to the former Pamela Zito
met before World War II on a baseball field through friends
Mary played in the women’s professional baseball league that sprang up during World War II
“It’s funny how my wife and I met,” Gary says
my boss rented space at 31st and Lake where we would service the backhoes and end loaders
and every day she would come in and get a bottle of pop out of the machine and play with his two German shepherds.”
He finally got up the courage to ask the owner of the shop to introduce him to Pamela
she pulled next to me in a car on Lake Street and 19th Avenue
I’ll call you tonight,’ and we’ve been together ever since,” Gary says
who is a longtime friend of Pamela’s family
began to hear good things about her husband
“The mayor was aware of my background in construction,” Gary says
“One day he asked me if I would be interested in working for the village
I was hired first as lead building inspector in 2002 and then appointed Director of Public Works in 2007.”
he oversees the day-to-day operations of the Street
and is involved in the everyday maintenance of the village fleet
and I enjoy operating the equipment on special projects
“I’m proud to work for Mayor Serpico and serve my community
Peggy DiFazio is the driving force behind one of the premier events in the near western suburbs: the Taste of Melrose Park
the event took wing when Peggy was put in charge in 1997
She helms the Taste as the village’s Director of Special Events
getting the ball rolling in early February when she contacts vendors and reaches out to sponsors
“It takes about eight months to bring it all together,” she explains
with crafters and businesses also part of the mix
dressing rooms and homeland security,” she notes
and we always strive to provide the best entertainment.”
The event runs from Friday to Sunday over the Labor Day Weekend; this year’s event is slated for Sept
Four stages will showcase free entertainment
with the Rat Pack and the Jersey Girls performing on the main stage on Sept
a high-energy dance band with pyrotechnics and laser lights
A carnival for children 10 years and younger runs throughout the weekend
“There is no other festival like ours,” Peggy attests
family friendly community.” She laughs when she thinks about her long tenure with the event
But that’s just the start of Peggy’s involvement with the village
She also serves as Director of Senior Affairs
A lifelong resident whose ties to the village span six generations
she sees herself as part of a much larger extended family
“We have a lot of seniors whose children no longer live in Melrose Park,” says Peggy
and power of attorney for medical and financial matters.”
Her department recently introduced a new initiative aimed at veterans
who must navigate a challenging paper trail on the way to receiving the benefits they’ve earned
“They fought for our country and should be getting something back,” Peggy asserts
Michael Del Galdo first met Ron Serpico while working on Ron’s campaign for mayor in 1997
It’s clear Serpico saw something special in his young volunteer
he hired me as the law clerk for the village
I’ve been the law clerk and then attorney for Melrose Park since June of that year,” Mike recalls
“That was my first position after graduating from the DePaul College of Law
He was born in New York and lived in New Jersey before moving with his family to Illinois
He attended high school in Wheaton and earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Drake University in Des Moines
he interned for a congressman in Washington
“I’ve always been interested in politics and government,” he explains
As the founder and principal of the Del Galdo Law Group
he sits at the head of the third largest municipal law firm in the state
and I am proud that it all started in Melrose Park,” Mike says
and major corporations were moving out of state
Serpico changed the face of the village by convincing companies like Target and a Fortune 500 developer to invest and build in the community,” Mike explains
He toiled with the mayor for 10 years to pave the way for Costco to take over the property once occupied by the iconic Kiddieland Amusement Park
“The mayor has done a great job of staying ahead of the real estate market and convincing business to come to or stay in Melrose Park,” Mike says
“It has eased the tax burden on the individual residents.”
Mike takes pride in doing legal work that improves the lives of his fellow Melrose Parkers
“It’s great to have a lasting impact on the community
to be able to drive by something and tell your kids you had something to do with it,” he says
that I’m charged with turning into policy or law
Sandy Ciancio has been involved with the Flowers of Italy Club in Melrose Park since she was a child
He arrived in Melrose Park from Cosenza in 1966
Sandy works as director of an occupational health clinic and spends much of her free time at the club
where she serves as vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary
Her many responsibilities include organizing parties
Once open only to men of Calabrian descent
the club now welcomes all who have Italian ancestry and gears its activities to families and friends
Their facility on Lake Street has a full kitchen
Sandy is particularly proud of the scholarships the club bestows
“We extend these not just to members of the club but to the community at large,” she notes
She is currently working through the club with the mayor’s office and officials in Italy to forge a sister-city bond with Paola
the club is a “place where we can foster our culture and language for future generations
keeping the traditions and paesans together.”
Sacred Heart School Principal Barbara Ciconte
At a time when so many Catholic schools and churches are consolidating or closing
the Sacred Heart School in Melrose Park is thriving
At the heart of this educational rinascimento is Barbara Ciconte
she served as a teacher there for 14 years and as the principal for another 14
“My family connection with the school and parish goes all the way back to my grandparents,” she says
“He was the one who encouraged me to go back to school to get my master’s in administration at Dominican University
‘Whenever you go to meet someone to get help for the school
always say it is for the kids because how can you turn that down?’”
always trying to find out what we can get to help those who are in need
“We’re always looking to enhance our programs without raising tuition.”
the biggest reward is “seeing the kids with that ‘ah ha!’ moment
It’s also great when they want to come back and help
It shows that we have done something well.”
The Missionaries of St
Charles Borromeo have played a pivotal role in shaping Melrose Park for more than a century
the religious order of priests and nuns built two parishes
a provincial house and three convents in the village and neighboring Stone Park
Marissonia Daltoe has witnessed much of that history
making quite an impression on the future mayor’s brother Terry
who attended kindergarten under her tutelage
She lived at the provincial house in Melrose Park from 1978-89 and returned from 1999-present
serving as provincial superior for much of that time
she oversaw the Scalabrini Sisters in North America
She also worked closely with the local community to stage the sisters’ popular St
Born in the Brazilian town of Encantado to immigrant parents from Piemonte and the Veneto regions of Italy
she has served immigrant communities in Mexico
She even spent 1989-95 in Italy as superior general of the order
but Melrose Park still feels like home to her
“I was sent here because there was a need,” she says
“My family asks me if I want to return home (to Brazil)
Carmel Feast Procession Marshal Sebastian Lorenzo
There have been many milestones in the 127 years the parishioners of Our Lady of Mt
Carmel have celebrated their feast in honor of the Blessed Mother
carried candle houses and erected lawn shrines for generations
“My great-great-grandfather started the procession marshals in 1925
and he was the grand marshal until 1971,” says Sebastian Lorenzo
“My grandfather held that position from 1971-97 until he passed
all three have shared Sebastian’s first and last name
from great-great-grandfather to great-great grandson for 95 years
The semaphore system that was instituted in 1925 to stop and start the huge procession has given way to walkie-talkies
but the responsibility for keeping order remains the same
“It’s a sacred trust that every marshal takes very seriously,” Sebastian says
Sebastian has broken with tradition in one regard
His father expected him to take over the family’s lumber and millwork business
but Sebastian pursued a career as a firefighter instead
but now he says it was a great move on my part,” Sebastian shares
has afforded him the opportunity to also run a sign company and work as a real estate investor and developer
