Mark Johnson: Facebook & Twitter Trent Magill: Facebook & Twitter Katie McGraw: Facebook & Twitter Phil Sakal: Facebook & Twitter A historic lake effect snow event unfolded across the snowbelt region south and east of Lake Erie beginning Thanksgiving Day and continuing into December 3rd A cold front brought the coldest air of the season to the region on Thanksgiving Day beginning a multi-day lake effect snow event The cold air interacted with above-normal Lake Erie water temperatures in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees to produce heavy snow bands Conditions were favorable for heavy lake effect snow due to the cold air and a fetch across Lake Erie that resulted in a single dominant band The band produced heavy snow with rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour bringing significant impacts to Lake and Ashtabula Counties in Ohio and Erie and Crawford Counties in Pennsylvania.  snowfall totals of around a foot were already being reported in Ashtabula County snowfall totals were approaching two and a half feet in Erie County Pennsylvania high-end reports were exceeding 3 feet of snow in peak areas of extreme Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania the flow across Lake Erie became more southwesterly pushing the heavy snow band north over Lake Erie and directing it towards Buffalo This brought a much-needed break to areas that received a tremendous amount of snow.    This was not the end of the heavy snowfall as lake effect snow bands moved back south on Sunday bringing another foot of snow to portions of Lake County Lake effect snow continued at times through December 3rd snowfall amounts ranged from 2 to 5 feet across the snowbelt of Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania A few of the highest snowfall totals include 63.2 inches in Saybrook Significant impacts were felt with this heavy lake effect snow storm including disrupting travel over the Holiday weekend Portions of Interstate 90 and Interstate 86 were shut down on November 29th The Pennsylvania National Guard was asked to assist during the storm and helped to rescue stranded motorists the weight of the snow damaged trees and bushes and even some property Reports of roofs collapsing have been received from Lake and Erie County where the heaviest snow fell snow and windy conditions resumed during the early morning hours of December 5th.   Observed storm total snow map from November 28 Values are interpolated from the below public information statement (PNS) Ohio — A growing group of Mentor-on-the-Lake residents is sharing their concerns over a proposal to replace the now-closed St Andrews Byzantine Catholic with a Dollar General Store within the next year Mentor-on-the-Lake homeowners like Earle Kurrass are concerned residents aren't being given a big enough voice in the decision-making process and believe the 1.6 square mile city already has plenty of small box retail space “Within four miles there’s over eight of them so we just feel that we’re being inundated with these Dollar General’s and we don’t see how that helps us," Kurrass said “It scares a lot of people and it scares our community because we have a developer that’s a big player that probably has a lot of money and we don’t know if they’re going to sue us if we try to stop this.” we know they’re trying to introduce fresh produce and they’re trying to introduce grocery store environments Mentor-on-the-Lake homeowner Tess Turi told News 5 that she's hoping residents will have more input on the proposal at the June 14 city council meeting Turi said residents still aren't sure if the sale of the church to the Dollar General developer is a done deal “When we seek information from our leadership clear answer is very hard to come by," Turi said While Mentor-on-the-Lake resident Susan Lenihan is worried if Dollar General builds in her community and fails the city could be left with a mess “I think they throw darts and see how many they can get to stick and they don’t all stay open," Lenihan said “Given the competition in the market you'd think something is going to go and they pull out of here after building that store and then we have a four-acre lot sitting empty again.” News 5 reached out to Dollar General Headquarters about the proposal and the company issued the following statement: Mentor-on-the-Lake Mayor Dave Eva responded immediately to our story and assured residents they will have input on the project which he said would ultimately be voted on by city council News 5 will follow up on this developing story Ohio — Cleanup is underway throughout Northeast Ohio from Thursday’s strong storms and one of the hardest-hit areas is Mentor on the Lake “You really couldn’t appreciate how much damage there was until the sun did shine again,” said Kathy Powaski The damage seemed to be heavily concentrated on that street “We saw that the storm was coming on the news we never thought it would be as bad as it was “I've lived here 50 years;
