While my two-year old is not quite ready to watch Hocus Pocus
We decided to head to Tate Farms to try our hand at picking pumpkins
I’ve gone to Tate Farms Cotton Pickin’ Pumpkin before taking photos of my friend’s children
but tackling this place with my own toddler I knew I needed to have a strategy
(Here’s where all the experienced moms laugh maniacally.)
Tate Farms features the only dairy-go-round in North America
This one-of-a-kind carousel was built and shipped from Italy exclusively for Tate Farms
featuring farm-themed animals such as goats
Little Farmer Playground has been exclusively designed for Tate Farms by Little Tikes for hands-on play allowing little farmers to stimulate their imaginations and explore their surroundings
Featuring multiple climbers of varying difficulty,4 slides
and tunnels ultimate farm playground experience
The Little Farmer Playground features rubber mulch and seating around the perimeter
Little Farmer Playground is targeted for ages 7 and under
the owners have built an incredible new sensory barn
but the goal is to teach children all about agriculture
Having kids and even adults understand where food and clothes start out from is important
and I can speak from my husband’s experience
The animal barn had beautiful babydoll sheep
My kiddo loved to make the sounds at the animals
there are large sanitizing stations right there and restrooms that are right around the corner
Every year it’s amazing to see the artwork with the hay bales
I saw a dog that looked like a “Puppy Dog Pal”
These creative works of art are always a delight to everyone
If you have a child with a birthday in the month of October, you can have a party there! Rent space at their pavilion and get a three hour adorable party package. I saw a few when we were there and really thought that was a cool idea. Here’s more info on their Corporate Party and Event Rentals
my child would have spent all her time on those
when we went to Tate Farms during two major football games on TV
So I felt comfortable letting my child jump with one other kid on the pillow
They have a “big kid one” and a “little kid one.”
Just a short distance away is the little choo-choo corn train ride
The train looked great from far away to my toddler but not so much when it was time to go all aboard
The helper and driver makes sure everyone has a great time
it’s literally dried corn pieces in a giant box
You can get some great sensory play out of them
Hay Bale Maze and Pedal Cart Track is great to get the energy out
There is also a pumpkin cannon that you have to pay a little extra for
but who doesn’t want to see a pumpkin hurled in the air half-a-mile away
It seems like a perfect place for families of all ages to go and have a great time
I saw a woman in a wheelchair and asked her if she thought the farm was accessible
She replied that she thought so because she had been coming to the farm for the past 10 years
She did mention that a power wheelchair or someone pushing would be best
Sometimes the grass and pebbles would be hard to maneuver through if she didn’t have power
So the hayride to the pumpkin patch is included in your ticket
you will be charged for the pumpkins you pick at the patch
When we went it was $7 for any sized pumpkin
So when my two year old picked the world’s smallest pumpkin
I made up for it by picking a giant one that James could have lived in if the peach didn’t work out
Parent Pro-Tip #1: Don’t try to look cute with some shoes
Go for something with traction because that hay is slippery as all get out
It’s embarrassing to slip (and totally catch yourself) and have the whole wagon look at you like you almost broke a hip
carefully climb down and put your pumpkins in a wheelbarrow and take them to pay for them
I suggest you make this your last stop because you’re all going to be hot and sweaty and tired and cranky and… if you time it right
Parent Pro-Tip #2: I’ll also let you in on a secret
Because the little pumpkin my daughter picked was super tiny and the end was really brown and it looked like it wasn’t long for this world
That’s right you can find all of these items and more at Tate Farms
Remember how I said you would be hot and tired and cranky
Go for the food and remember that this is a once-a-season thing
I am not a football person so that’s didn’t factor into my timing
I did see they had a big screen TV under their lovely shaded pavillion so that football fans didn’t have you use data on their phones
make sure yours is charged up and has plenty of space
You can find the CUTEST places to snap a photo
As long as you can get your child to sit still long enough and not run toward the slide/swing/big pile of pumpkins
So if that is something your child would sit still for and you would pay an extra dollar for

Alabama - Storm clouds gathering to the west
school buses full of students from Meridianville Middle School lurched toward the back of the church
relieved that their children and grandchildren had survived the storms earlier Friday morning
followed to the Meridianville Church of Christ on U.S
a Madison County sheriff's deputy stood in the middle of the highway
trying to hurry pickup before the next waves of storms rolled through the northern part of the county
said she feared the storms expected to begin around mid-afternoon would be more destructive than the tornadoes of April 27
"It's just hotter,'' she said around 1:30 p.m
"It's just got that feel of it.''
She had been in her storm shelter when the storms rolled through around 10 a.m
"We were in the storm shelter when they called us from school,'' she said
"They said wait till it's safe to come on.''
"It was directly above our school,'' he said
'We were in school.'''
"Everybody was like freaking out,'' he said
"Some people were in the hallways.''
But there was "not much'' damage at the school
said some shingles were blown off Meridianville Elementary School
Austin Lucas noticed the roof had been blown off a restaurant
"One house is leveled in the subdivision,'' he said
"I thought it'd be a little (tornado)
Resha Andrews came by the church to pick up her daughter
Listening to her husband's weather radio at their home off Joe Quick Road in Hazel Green
she had been worried about her daughter's safety
"My husband is a retired fire marshal,'' she said
"We were listening to the weather radio
They said it was coming toward Meridianville Middle School
the radio announced that Meridianville had been given the all clear
it was decided that the students would be transported from the school to Meridianville Church of Christ
"Everything around the school is closed because of downed power lines,'' said Chad Brooks of the Madison County Sheriff's Department
"What we'll do is transfer children to the church
and the pick up spot will be at the church.''
the first of the buses came to the church parking
"I'm relieved and ready to get him
and ready for him to be with me,'' said Kandy Bentley
Then came the mother of a 2-year-old and an 11-year-old
"I'm good now,'' she said

AL (WAFF) - A member of a nearby utility crew went inside a home and woke up a family Monday morning when their house in Meridianville caught on fire
A bystander heard two explosions near the house at 360 Spencer Lakes Drive
three children and some pets were inside the home
Toney and Huntsville responded to fight the fire
Investigators are still trying to figure caused the two-story home to go up in flames
but thanks to two quick-thinking bystanders
Only a few family photos remain after a fire destroyed this home just after 7 a.m
including three children and the family's pets made it out without a scratch thanks to the bravery of two construction contractors
"By the grace of God I went this route," said Jonathan Hart
And when Jonathan Hart saw those flames he and his cousin Drew didn't hesitate to jump into action
"Instinct told us both as soon as we had saw it
we jumped out the car and I immediately ran up the stairs
I told my buddy Drew here to get on the phone immediately and call 911," said Hart
"We can't leave people in a home and it's burning
And neighbors say that call and their quick thinking made the difference
I mean he was persistent that he did not leave until every single person that was inside of that house was out including the pets," said Felesha Perry
Despite the acclaim from family members and neighbors
"I don't think it's so much as us being heroes..
it's just what any good-hearted person would do
Instincts would say there's most likely a family in there
while most everything was destroyed by the fire
the family's Christmas presents were untouched
Relatives and the American Red Cross are currently helping the family

RockHouse Alpaca Farm is located in Meridianville
and they have recently started allowing visitors
but I have been actively looking for ways to get my kids out of the house in outdoor environments this summer
and this excursion seemed to fit the bill quite nicely
We had a brief moment of uncertainty that we were in the right place (because we didn’t see a sign or any alpacas) but after a couple minutes
so they have to keep them safe from the traffic on the road
Make sure to bring cash or check to cover $10 per person as they do not accept any electronic forms of payment at the time of this review
Be aware that all members including children under two years old are counted
We were each given a cup of food/treats and began to approach the group of female alpacas
You should know – you will very much have a “face to face” experience
and I found that most of my kids were nose to nose
The farm has the alpacas split up in two different areas
The girls are in one pen and the boys in another
We found the girls to be very gentle and somewhat shy
They were curious and eager to get the treats at the beginning
they seemed to be content to find quieter places to graze
The boys were a bit more aggressive in getting treats and didn’t mind a bit of bumping and pushing to get what they were after
they even got a new fluffy bundle of alpaca joy…
The owners were available the whole time for questions and info on the alpacas as we moved around the property
Much of the area in their yard is covered with shade with established trees
but even though it was a very warm and humid day
we were offered an educational pamphlet and a coloring book featuring alpacas

Thirteen years of loving attention have had a major impact on Greenlawn Plantation in Meridianville
When purchasing the home in 2004 Robert Lipscomb and Ricky Motes saw the potential for creating a fresh renovation/restoration of a true Southern gem
Every aspect of the property inside and out has seen a total transformation
this antebellum beauty was built in 1850 by William Otey to impress his future bride Octavia
It was built on a central hall plan with two stories and nine rooms
The kitchen was located in a separate log cabin nearby
The still-standing original columns are large cedar trees cut down on the property and encased in a "cement" slurry
an outdoor covered entertaining kitchen and dining area and a massive home theater/man cave/Alabama game day retreat
Four of the six original fireplaces have been converted to gas and the original staircase is intact
The pine wood floors retain their character
On one side of the downstairs central hallway the rooms have become the master suite and on the opposite side is now the massive modern kitchen and dining room
Walls were painted deep colors that complement the amazing antiques that furnish the home
One of the upstairs bedrooms boasts a four-poster walnut bed sculpted from a tree harvested on the property
Custom cabinetry makes the best use of every available space
The plantation home has been modernized and made comfortable while retaining the original spirit and character of the 1850's
The wide central halls are now cozy parlors
Presently the home is a Christmas showcase
Every room is heavily adorned with Christmas trees of various types loaded with thousands of ornaments and lights
the comfortable atmosphere make Greenlawn Plantation a very cool space

Alabama – The first thing that becomes visible as cars approach the new $16 million Moores Mill Intermediate School on Walker Lane in Meridianville is the school's bright blue roof
school officials and elected officials converged under that roof on Monday evening as the school held its ribbon-cutting and open house
The air buzzed with excitement as parents and their children filed into the building
many coming straight from the nearby Lynn Fanning Elementary
where their students' younger siblings were preparing for their own first day of school on Tuesday
Parents and students seemed equally impressed by the new school
"I like it; it's really big and all the students can fit in it," said 9-year-old Evelyn Carter
who will start the fourth grade at Moores Mill on Tuesday
Evelyn will be coming over from Lynn Fanning
which will lose its fourth and fifth grades to Moores Mill
director of elementary education for Madison County Schools
said Lynn Fanning will be a K-3 school this year
Moores Mill will also be a new home to Hazel Green Elementary's fifth graders and Meridianville Middle's sixth graders
Hazel Green will be K-4 this year and Meridianville Middle will be a 7-8 school like Buckhorn Middle
which was built with a capacity for 800 students
wills start the year with about 625 students
is coming over from Hazel Green Elementary
When asked what part of the new school he liked best
said she thought the entire school turned out well
but said she appreciates the security of the front entrance
an employee at Nola Van Peursem Architects
which was designed by the Huntsville-based firm
builders and district officials got a lot of kudos at Monday's event for the speed with which the school was built
chief operations officer for the school district
said he was amazed that the school was completed in time for the school year
"I'm loving it; it looks like they did a really good job with it," Carter said
"My thought at the beginning of the summer was
'They'll never get this done in time.' But they did."
Madison County Superintendent David Copeland had similar sentiments during the ribbon cutting
"To get a school up in less than a year is unheard of," Copeland said
Board member Dan Nash told those present to go online and find Wilkerson's email address to send him a note of thanks
"He and his people have worked tremendously hard," Nash said
Copeland also praised Wilkerson and his staff for the new school
"This facility will meet our needs for years to come," Copeland said
