The body of a missing 4-year-old from Lawrence was recovered from the Merrimack River in Tewksbury Friday morning
Azriel Lopez had been missing for nearly two weeks when his body was found by an off-duty Massachusetts State Police lieutenant
according to the Middlesex district attorney’s office
The lieutenant was boating near the Trull Brook Golf Course around 9 a.m
Lopez was reported missing in the water near the Western Canal in Lowell at around 5:45 p.m
Police said preliminary indications suggested the boy was pulled by the current into the river
Local and state police mounted an extensive search of the river by boat and air, assisted by firefighters and dive teams
Agencies from several communities along the river
The State Police Marine Unit and Dive Team responded Friday morning and identified the body as Lopez’s
and Methuen police also assisted in the recovery of the body
The chief medical examiner’s office will determine the immediate cause of death
Days after their son went missing, Lopez’s family told Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra they knew he was likely dead
but they urged rescuers to continue the search for his body
because he’s my son,” said Carmen Fontanéz

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Emily Tow (North Kingstown
5-6 AE) took two wins versus Merrimack (7-24) on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at River View Field
The River Hawks collected an 11-5 victory in game one and a 5-1 win in game two versus the Warriors
"I think everything was on point," said Head Coach Jen Starek
"We looked very solid offensively and we stayed consistent."
The River Hawks recorded 12 stolen bases today
with Tow and Santiago each picking up three
throwing the full seven to strike out nine and take the win
Merrimack took the early lead in game one, generating a run from a passed ball. In the bottom of the first, however, Baumes got the River Hawks started with a double to right center before scoring on an error to erase the difference. Freshman Madi Wade (Hagerstown
Md.) then drilled a single to right to plate Santiago and would eventually score on a single up the middle by Tow to put the River Hawks on top
In the second, Merrimack recorded a run from a wild pitch to cut the difference to just one. The home team was quick to retaliate, though, as freshman Grace Stepp (Richboro
Pa.) walked and then quickly advanced to third on ground outs before scoring on a miscue to make it 4-2
A quiet top of the inning would lead to a four-hit third from the River Hawks
Fitzgerald and Santiago would all be credited with base hits to help increase the River Hawks' lead to 8-2
The Warriors answered back in the fourth with three runs
Hardy registered her team's lone hit in the bottom of the inning with a well-placed single through the left side ahead of a single through the left side by Stepp in the fifth
The Warriors were able to notch another hit in the sixth, but the River Hawks continued their offensive efforts. Santiago started the inning with a leadoff double to left and quickly made it home from a wild pitch. Tow tagged an RBI single, as freshman Taylor Dolan (Holbrook
To finish up the inning Stepp hit a textbook sac fly to center
allowing Tow to score and helping the River Hawks take the 11-5 decision
Game two was underway when the Warriors earned one hit in the top of the first. In the home half of the inning, freshman Avery Spinello-Branch (Lorton
Va.) walked and then advanced to second on a ground out
sending Spinello-Branch home to take the 1-0 lead
The Warriors evened the score in the second thanks to two hits
Neither side was able to break the 1-1 stalemate in the third
although the River Hawks totaled two base runners
The top of the fourth sparked the River Hawks' momentum
as DeCitise struck out two and retired the Warriors within three batters
DeCitise and Fitzgerald earned back-to-back base hits
UMass Lowell then collected two runs generated by a wild pitch and a ground out to go up
The top of the fifth was also a 1-2-3 inning
consisting of another two strikeouts for DeCitise
Tow and Neeld earned singles and then quickly scored on a wild pitch
as the ball drifted far beyond the Warriors' reach
A quiet top of the sixth followed for Merrimack before a solo hit from Neeld in the bottom of the inning
DeCitise would swiftly shut the Warriors down in the seventh
striking out the side to help UMass Lowell to a 5-1 win
The River Hawks are back home at River View Field on Friday
April 18 for a three-game America East series versus Binghamton starting at 1 p.m
The contest will be a dedication game for Morgan's Message

NY — Manhattan picked up its biggest win of conference play with a 79-75 triumph over first-place Merrimack (14-11
Manhattan was locked in on the defensive end early as it jumped out to a 9-3 lead after a three-point play for Will Sydnor at 15:42
Merrimack fired back with a 10–0 run to stake out a 13-9 lead
opening a 32-21 lead on a floater from Adam "Budd" Clark at 5:52
As Manhattan's defense regressed throughout the first half
the offense was able to get off clean looks against Merrimack's 2-3 zone
That included a smooth turnaround midrange jumper from Sydnor that closed to within three with just over 10 minutes left in the first
After trailing 42-33 at half, the Jaspers cut the deficit to five after back-to-back threes from Devin Dinkins
A Sean Trumper three at 6:56 mark of the second half extended Manhattan's lead to 67-56
The Jaspers then kicked into a whole other gear
launching an 11-0 run capped off by a string of four baskets
including two each from Robinson and Sydnor
with a fast-break slam from the freshman from the Bronx capping off the spectacle
After a free throw from Bryan Etumnu put Merrimack back up one with 3:41
Gilyard nailed a catch-and-shoot three from the wing to put Manhattan back up
A ferocious slam from Sydnor pushed the Jaspers advantage back out to six with 46 seconds left to give Manhattan enough separation late
Wesley Robinson (18 points and 12 rebounds) and Will Sydnor (19 points and 10 rebounds) both posted double doubles
Dinkins and Gilyard went 5-7 from three-point range as the pair accounted for all of the team's treys
Manhattan was plagued by 12 first half turnovers before only relinquishing four possessions in the second half
Manhattan's 46 points in the second half was the most points scored by any team against the Warriors in conference play
Merrimack ranks second in opponents points-per-game with 64.4
Manhattan posted a 44-28 advantage for points in the paint

as Cranston took a drop pass from Ivan Zivlak
firing on net and beating Svedebäck wide blocker-side to double the Warriors' advantage
- Just 1:29 later, the Friars found the equalizer on a breakout chance during the penalty kill, as a Graham Gamache pass banked off of Merrimack's Ty Daneault before finding the back of the net

Four days after voters approved a $2 million reduction to the Merrimack Valley School District’s budget for next year
board members clashed with their superintendent over who would have the final say over cuts
The conflict arose during a board meeting Monday when Superintendent Randy Wormald told the members that administrators would develop a plan for reductions and the board’s job would simply be to “approve” it
“The purview of the board is to approve the plan,” he said
“We contacted some other districts that went through this same thing
Some of them didn’t even ask for formal approval from the board but we feel that’s a necessary step as part of this process.”
Several board members bristled at Wormald’s description of the board’s role
“I just think that the process should be very different,” newly elected board member Tom Laliberte said
“I would love the opportunity to share what I’m thinking and the questions that I have
but I just feel like I’m being shut down right now.”
Wormald said he was relying upon the legal opinion of the district’s attorney
in describing the division of responsibilities
if I have word from legal counsel and your opinion,” Wormald said to Laliberte
“it’s my job to go with the word of legal counsel.”
He did not elaborate on the legal opinion during the meeting
nor did he respond to a request for clarification on Tuesday
O’Shaughnessy also did not respond to a request for comment
School board chair Tracy Bricchi said Monday that she would contact O’Shaughnessy to get more information
She had yet to reach him as of Tuesday morning
The process laid out by Wormald contrasts markedly with how the Pembroke school board proceeded last year in the wake of a $3 million reduction
administrators presented recommendations but left the final decision-making up to the board members
The board held several meetings in which it solicited feedback from the public
weighed programmatic decisions in public session
and discussed the elimination of specific positions in non-public session
The dispute over how to proceed comes as the board and administrators face questions about transparency. The district’s $2 million over-expenditure last school year, which was disclosed in January, was a frequent topic during last week’s annual meeting
Residents voted 267-250 at the annual meeting to set next year’s operating budget at $49.7 million
$2 million less than the $51.7 million the district had asked residents to approve
The approved budget is about $1 million more than the budget for the current school year but administrators say contracted salaries
benefits and special education costs have risen even further
the lead organizer behind last week’s vote
threatened to cut the budget in half next year if district didn’t become more transparent
“We need to know exactly where the dollars are going if you want our support,” she said
Bastarache and others filed a petition with the board Monday calling on the district to conduct a forensic audit of spending last year
While the district is in the process of engaging a firm to conduct a standard audit
it is not as involved as a forensic audit would entail
Part of the tension between Wormald and some members of the board and public revolves around the impact of the cuts
Wormald on Monday estimated the budget reduction would lead to the elimination of 15 to 20 positions
though he stressed that the number of people who would be laid off would likely be lower
due to retirements and the fact that some positions are currently unfilled
Laliberte questioned that number and said he had already found roughly $1 million the district could come up with that would not involve eliminating positions
including a $300,000 surplus in the district’s food service
He also proposed re-allocating money currently set aside for the district’s capital improvement projects
“I don’t think we need to lose 14 positions,” he said
And I think it would be wise to have a conversation and talk about some of these lines.”
Wormald and Bricchi directed Laliberte to send his ideas to Bricchi
and Wormald said administrators had already begun considering some of the possibilities Laliberte proposed
“We’re turning over every stone to look for ways that we can reduce the number of positions” to eliminate
“Because that’s the last thing that we want to do
Wormald said part of the logistical challenge was that administrators wanted to inform employees who could lose their jobs prior to their positions being discussed in a public board meeting
He said board members could have some say “around the fringes” at a board meeting on March 24 when administrators present the plan
employees on the list will have already been notified
“My concern right now is that as a board member I’m going to walk out here tonight and we won’t have any further say before people are told that their job might be on the line,” newly elected board member Stacie Jarvis said
