UPDATE25 News reached out to the Texas Department of State Health services regarding the case of rubella
says there is no case of rubella or measles in the Mexia area
Deusen says a positive result to an antibody test was likely misreported by a parent to the district
The positive result is being attributed to a previous vaccination or infection
ORIGINALMexia ISD is addressing what the district thought was the first confirmed case of the measles here in Central Texas
25 News spoke to the state who said it was a false alarm due to miscommunication
BROADCAST TRANSCRIPT: The Mexia ISD first went to social media to break the news Thursday afternoon after announcing all classes would be closed Friday for cleaning
25 News talked to the state who said it was a false alarm due to miscommunication
But the superintendent says it was a confirmed case
turns out it's actually a case of German measles — also known as Rubella
The CDC defines this as a contagious disease caused by a virus
This is usually mild with symptoms such as a red rash appearing on the faces of children
sore throat and that rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
Our 25 News news team spoke with Chris Van Deusen with the Texas Department of State Health Services on why we’re seeing such an uptick of cases here in the state and why it’s important to get yourself vaccinated
“If you’re aware there’s a lot of measles and you only got one dose as a child or you were vaccinated a long time ago
like back in the 60's and it was a different vaccine back then and it didn’t work nearly as well
and that’s what’s recommended now that everyone get two doses
and that provides 97 percent immunity," Van Deusen said
there’s a very small chance that you would get it."
If you have any questions when it comes to getting the measles vaccines
no measles cases have been reported for the Central Texas area
the closest would be one confirmed case in Rockwall County
about an hour and a half north of the area

Texas (KXXV) — A Mexia man died Wednesday night following a standoff with local authorities
Police were dispatched to a residence at around 8 p.m
where officers encountered an armed subject in the 500 block of East Grayson Street
"The subject fired at responding officers striking the police vehicle — as officers exited their patrol vehicle they exchanged gun fire with the male subject who retreated to a nearby house and went inside

officers identified him as Darious Brewer of Mexia

"McLennan County SWAT approached the residence and called out for Mr
Brewer — once the SWAT team entered the residence they located Mr
It appeared he had sustained wounds from the shooting with police — he was pronounced dead at the scene
An autopsy has been requested and the Texas Rangers are actively working the Mexia Police Department on the investigation

Texas (KXXV) — Micah Kirven died last week after suffering cardiac arrest that originated from an asthma attack
Abraham Saldana is one of the many Central Texas neighbors that came to the final horn ceremony to honor the late Micah Kirven
"It's a different feeling because we are all so young and most of us have not experienced death
But it hits a little closer to home for him — he used to play football with Kirven in middle school during lunch hours
"To know that it's in your class and one of your friends — it's a different feeling," Saldana said
felt the same way as they saw Micah's coffin being carried by the football team
the family was at center field as they got to see their son
and we used to call each other coach because I used to have this little lisp," Saldana said
25 News' Marc Monroy spoke with many people in the surrounding neighborhoods
who say Micah was one of the kindest souls — even beyond the football field
"All my prayers go out to the family right now
because I know they're definitely having it the most hard out of all of us," Saldana said
"I hope that all of us get through this together."
the community will never forget his impact

Pilot Point notched an impressive 36-32 upset win over Mexia in Thursday's bi-district round playoff clash
The fourth-seeded Bearcats rallied to knock off the top-seeded Black Cats with help from a late 91-yard TD run by junior Hunter Newman

GRAND PRAIRIE — Pilot Point had its first winless season in program history last fall
But what a turnaround the 2024 season has been for the Bearcats under first-year coach Chad Worrell
Pilot Point made the playoffs as District 6-3A DI’s fourth-place team and notched a come-from-behind 36-32 win over top-seeded Mexia in the opening round Thursday night at the Gopher-Warrior Bowl
With his team down 26-23 in the fourth quarter
Hunter Newman scored on a 91-yard run to put Pilot Point ahead 30-26
The Bearcats then stopped Mexia on its own end of the field — the Blackcats failed to convert a fourth-and-2 from the 22 — and Pilot Point took over with 6:08 left
On a third-and-6 play on their next series at the Mexia 19
the Bearcats scored on a reverse from Luke Conner to Dylan Hamblin to lead 36-26 as the extra point was blocked
The Blackcats scored a touchdown with no time remaining to set the final margin
leaving the ecstatic Bearcats and their fans and coaches to celebrate a four-point upset victory
Pilot Point (4-7) took its first playoff win since 2020 with the triumph
Worrell said he liked how his team never quit
He also said the team had some issues defensively
but that coaches told the players at halftime that they were in the game and to keep plugging away
“I knew we were going to make some plays on defense
“And our offense made plays and we took control in the second half.”
He commended Newman not just on his long TD run but also for a run he made late in the game
that gave the Bearcats a first down that helped ice the game
“It was a great job by everybody — it’s completely a team effort,” Worrell said
The situation didn’t look promising for the Bearcats at the start of the second half as Mexia
scored on quarterback Braden Wilson’s 22-yard TD pass to wide receiver Kyran Bedford
That score gave the Blackcats a 26-15 lead with 8:07 left in the third quarter after a failed two-point conversion try
Ashton Williamson scored on a 39-yard run for Pilot Point to cut the lead to 26-21
and a two-point conversion — a Garrett Evans pass to Caden David — cut the Blackcats’ lead to 26-23
Pilot Point drove inside the Mexia 20 on its next possession
but an Evans pass was incomplete on a fourth-and-4 play from the Mexia 17 with 10 seconds to play in the third quarter
The Blackcats punted on their next possession
Mexia trailed 7-6 before retaking the lead on Kelan Collins’ 53-yard run
Wilson connected with tight end Adriano Mendoza on the two-point conversion to give Mexia a 14-7 lead
the Blackcats needed just one play to pad their lead as running back Jacques Cooper scored on a 51-yard run
The Bearcats scored two points on the point-after attempt as David returned a fumble to the end zone
and Mexia led 20-9 late in the first quarter
Pilot Point scored early in the second quarter on David’s 17-yard TD run
The two-point conversion failed after Mexia intercepted a pass to leave the Bearcats down 20-15
Pilot Point forced a turnover on downs on the Blackcats’ next possession and ran off much of the remaining time in the first half before an interception ended its scoring threat

Texas (KXXV) — "There have been no recent cases of Rubella in that area and also no cases of measles," said a spokesperson for state health leaders
"It's kinda sudden at the last minute," said Mexia parent Justiss Gibson
Gibson's children attend class in the Mexia school district
She said when she heard the school was closing down Friday due to a reported measles case there was more she wanted to know
"It kind of caught the parents off guard a little bit it didn't give us a chance to prepare ourselves before just actually deciding to close the school down they gave us a heads up that there could be a possibility before actually taking that action," said Gibson
Here's a timeline of events that took place within the past 24 hours
The Mexia ISD first went to social media to announce a confirmed case of measles and that all schools would be closed Friday for cleaning
But the State Health Department told 25News it was a false alarm
the district said it's a case of German measles -- known as Rubella
Then today The Texas Department of State Health Services gave us this statement:
"A child had a positive result on an antibody test that would show immunity from a previous vaccination or infection
Sounds like it got misreported to the parent
There have been no recent cases of Rubella in that area and also no cases of measles."
Gibson said when school is canceled it can shift a parent's schedule
then I can understand them shutting a school down
But it can be inconvenient for a parent who doesn't have a daycare lined up or babysitter for when the school is closed," said Gibson
A new leak sheds light on the ownership of an offshore account found in the Pandora Papers
Antonio Mexia, a former government official in Portugal and once CEO of the country’s largest energy company, kept $5.9 million in assets in a previously unknown offshore company, according to new reporting by Expresso
The revelations come as Mexia faces criminal cases on suspicion of corruption and other financial crimes related to his role as CEO of Energias de Portugal
Among the millions of documents published as part of the 2021 Pandora Papers investigation
a bank account statement dated in 2017 revealed the existence of an offshore company
the beneficiary of the funds invested in the company was unknown
ICIJ and Expresso obtained a leaked client portfolio presentation made in 2019 to Boreal Capital Management
a wealth management and fiduciary services company in Zurich
that identified Mexia as a beneficiary of Miamex Ventures
Account statements found by Expresso in the Pandora Papers reveal that in mid-2017 Miamex Ventures had $1.4 million in investment funds
$2.7 million in corporate bonds and $1.7 million in bank deposits
for a total market value of $5.9 million The documents analyzed by Expresso show that the funds were in an account managed by a Portuguese financial manager
He did not respond to Expresso’s request for comment
Mexia became a defendant in an investigation by the Portuguese public prosecutor’s office
which was later divided into three criminal cases
all on suspicion of corruption and other financial crimes related to his time as CEO of the energy company EDP between 2006 and 2020
Miamex was dissolved voluntarily on May 28
according to an announcement published by a British Virgin Islands newspaper
the public prosecutor’s office questioned Mexia as part of the case against him
Expresso reported Friday that the prosecutor did not know the offshore company existed and the information was not included in their case so far
Two of the three criminal investigations are expected to conclude soon
he declined to respond to Expresso’s request for comment
very powerful in the energy sector,” Expresso reporter and ICIJ member Micael Pereira said
“He was behind many of the decisions made in the last 15 or 20 years in Portugal in connection to one of the biggest sectors in the economy
“Because at this point we don’t know the origin of the money
the ongoing legal cases might be delayed until prosecutors get more information on this company,” Pereira added
The Pandora Papers was a 2021 ICIJ investigation of a trove of more than 11.9 million confidential files
The documents were leaked from 14 offshore services firms around the world that set up shell companies and other offshore nooks for their clients
billionaires and hundreds of heads of state
ICIJ led a team of more than 600 journalists from 150 news outlets that spent two years sifting through the documents
