his American Legion hat's deep blue clear against the red of newly laid bricks
as he took photos of the dark black lettering engraved on the clay
On the the brick he's focusing on are his name and the names of his family members: men who served in various branches of the military and fought in war
Carnevale and other veterans and military families gathered Friday morning on Curtiss Parkway in Miami Springs to witness the unveiling of the city's new war memorial cenotaph — a tomb meant to commemorate people who are buried elsewhere
READ MORE: The Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs held its annual Military Appreciation Day at the Capitol
I think it's a beautiful monument and it makes you feel warm inside
I'm just proud to say that I was a member of the United States Army and I always will never forget it," Carnevale told WLRN
The newly remodeled monument was the brainchild of several members of the American Legion Post 32, based in Hialeah. The men wanted to repair and revamp the city's existing memorial, which was built in 1945 to honor fallen soldiers
After three years of fundraising by selling engraved bricks and benches, and with support from the Miami Springs community, the legionnaires were able to raise more than $30,000 for the project. Supplemented by a $150,000 appropriation from the Florida legislature sponsored by State Senator Bryan Avila
the project went from a simple maintenance endeavor to a complete overhaul of the memorial
When we talk about supporting our veterans
our community does it as a team," Avila said during the ceremony
but it's now surrounded by pillars and flags representing each branch of the U.S
Stone benches were erected around the monument
to turn the memorial into a community space where visitors can gather
it was not kept up the way it should have been
but they've done an amazing job of getting it back up," said Steven R
an Air Force veteran who sang the national anthem for the unveiling ceremony
a former Miami Springs councilman who was part of the legionnaire committee that pushed for the new memorial
said his group will continue to raise money selling bricks at the River Cities Festival later this month
Proceeds will go toward maintenance of the cenotaph and veterans organizations

Luis Carlos Almendarez-Gonzalez and his wife have been living in several different places
along with her son and several other children they have together
Miami Springs police said officers were called to the hotel Wednesday afternoon in reference to a disturbance
the hotel manager and a hotel employee told officers that the victim had ran up to them
holding his neck and telling them that his stepfather had “choked him out inside the room.” They confirmed that his neck was red
Officers then spoke to the victim who said his stepfather had grabbed him by the neck and choked him for a few seconds after the boy tried to grab some food stamp cards for his mother
Police said the victim’s mother told them she had left the room because she wanted to pack her things and change hotels to get away from her husband
but she forgot her food stamp card inside the room
the eldest child who was inside the room when the incident occurred was scared to speak about what happened
in fear of retaliation from Almendarez-Gonzalez
but confirmed that he saw Almendarez-Gonzalez placing his hands around the victim’s neck because of the food stamp cards
Police said Almendarez-Gonzalez admitted to getting into a verbal dispute with his wife and getting angry with her son for “disrespecting him,” but denied placing his hands around the boy’s neck
The boy’s age was not disclosed in the arrest report
and the name and exact address of the hotel were redacted
Almendarez-Gonzalez was arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and battery by strangulation
he remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where his bond had yet to be set
Miami International Airport conducted its full-scale triennial emergency preparedness exercise
in partnership with the Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Department and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office
The exercise fulfills a Federal Aviation Administration requirement for airports to conduct a simulated airfield emergency scenario every three years
to test and evaluate the airport’s emergency plan and its ability to respond to a major incident
I am so proud of the strong partnership and teamwork we saw on full display between MIA
and our local and federal partners at this year’s drill
The triennial drill is just one example of how MIA’s safety and security workforce trains and prepares constantly to keep our visitors and employees safe around the clock
In addition to fulfilling an FAA requirement
we will now be even more ready in the event of a real-life emergency
In addition to participation by multiple local and federal safety and security agencies
more than 100 student volunteers from Miami Springs Senior High School acted as passengers evacuating an aircraft because of a security incident onboard
Miami International Airport, America’s busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers is receiving an unprecedented investment of $9 billion in capital improvements and maintenance upgrades
MIA offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S
airport and is also the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida
generating business revenue of $118 billion and approximately 60 percent of all international visitors to Florida annually

Miami Springs is having one of those seasons that most programs can only dream about
the Golden Hawks have spent the past few seasons competing at a high level
Springs is reaching heights that even that 2019 team never reached
and capturing the HSBN March Madness Shootout tournament championship
“The boys came oiut and played well this week,” said Manager David Fanshawe
“We had some solid pitching performances
propelled us to winning the championship.”
Pitching was at the forefront in the title game
with Magdiel Estevez holding the Bulldogs offense down all night
allowing only three hits in six innings of work
Estevez gave up only one run and did not walk a batter
“Tonight we just ran into a pitcher who threw the ball extremely well,” said Bulldogs Manager Laz Fundora
and they showed why they deserve to be champions.”
The Hawks wasted no time taking control of the title game
and Estevez helped his own cause with a two-run single of his own
Estevez then threw five innings of one run ball
before providing offensive insurance with an RBI double in the Hawks half of the fifth
Andres Suarez had an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning
Estevez handed the ball off to Josiah Acosta
who threw a perfect inning to secure the championship game win
and have spent the entire year either first or second in the HSBN Miami Power Rankings
Their two losses were by a combined four runs
and Wednesday’s win avenged one of those losses
While the offense has been there at times for Springs
Fanshawe credits other areas of the game with sustaining the run they are on
“Pitching and defense has been the key to our success so far this season.”
The Hawks will try to make it back-to-back tournament titles next week
when they return from Spring Break to play in the GMAC tournament
They then will only have only one regular season week left until the district tournament playoffs start April 14th
“We are hoping to continue to play well and keep our momentum going into the GMAC next week
and then play well as we head into the playoffs,” said Fanshawe.”
the March Madness tournament was a mirror into how the Bulldogs up-and-down season has gone in 2025
They won two one-run games to make the title game
Fundora understands the value of playing the top competition
“This tournament was an excellent experience for our guys
I am very proud of our guys for the way they showed up and competed this week.”

– A 55-year-old man is facing a felony charge in South Florida for a bizarre impersonation scheme that left pizza customers getting a raw deal
Police said he ran “an elaborate scheme to defraud tourists staying in the hotels of Miami Springs” by pretending to be a well-known local pizza parlor
customers who thought they were ordering pies from Roman’s Pizzeria
were instead getting subpar slices from Jose Marti-Alvarez
Marti-Alvarez “distributed fake pizza flyers to hotel rooms” along Northwest 36th Street
advertising “Roman Pizzeria,” misleading visitors
the proprietor of the real Roman’s Pizzeria
who’s been cooking up pies for four decades
sometimes they (were sent) in a box with a piece of raw dough.”
“They just give it to them and by (the) time they realize it they’re gone anyway,” Roman said
Police said the fraud had been “ongoing for several years” and has caused “significant hardships” for the real Roman’s
“including complaints to the Better Business Bureau
“So sometimes they show up upset here to the store claiming ‘Where’s the food?” Roman said
“We have to explain to them that it’s not us.”
officers arrested Marti-Alvarez on a charge of organized scheme to defraud and booked him into jail early Monday morning
is also facing an aggravated battery charge “after fleeing from hotel staff in his vehicle and hitting a staff member” with the vehicle
Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer ordered Marti-Alvarez to stay away from the Days Inn at 4767 NW 36th St.
seeking to have the aggravated battery charge dismissed
read from an arrest report that states that he told officers that he “left the area fast and didn’t think he had hit her with the car because he understood he wasn’t supposed to be passing out the pizza flyers at the hotel.”
Glazer found probable cause to charge Marti-Alvarez with aggravated battery
His bond for the organized scheme to defraud charge was listed in jail records as “to be set.”
Marti-Alvarez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday evening

By CiberCuba Editorial Team
A coach of the Miami Springs Little League baseball team
is accused of possession of child pornography
Adrián Cotera, 37 years old, was arrested for possessing at least 20 videos of child pornography, after police received a cyber tip linking his IP address to the downloading of pornographic material involving minors, the Miami Springs Police Department reported in a statement on social media
The investigation was initiated following the alert received on February 21 by the police, who traced the suspicious activity to Cotera's residence in Miami Springs, where detectives discovered explicit material involving children that had been downloaded from his home
Cotera, who had no prior criminal record, was arrested on February 27 at his home and faces 20 counts of first-degree felonies for possession of child pornography
The officers found a weapon and several grams of cocaine in the house, according to the arrest report cited by media sources
for which he also faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance with a weapon
Cotera confessed to the crimes he is accused of
appeared before the Miami-Dade court on Friday
where Judge Mindy Glazer set a bail of $40,000 and ordered him to stay away from any minors
Cotera was serving as a volunteer coach for the Miami Springs Little League
In a statement released after the incident became known
expressed that the organization was aware of Cotera's arrest and made it clear that he is "no longer a volunteer coach for Miami Springs Little League."
"We are very proud of the work that the Miami Springs Police Department continues to do to keep our community safe," González emphasized
Parents of children who attended baseball training are very affected and concerned by the news. Alina Blanco, a resident of Miami Springs, told America TeVé: “That situation is really frightening
because 20 charges of child pornography are alarming; I have a small grandson and I saw that he is coach here
The police said that the investigation is still active and ongoing
The lead that led to Cotera's arrest was obtained through cybersecurity agencies monitoring dark web sites linked to the distribution of illegal material, experts stated to television networks

Despite pleas from two municipal mayors and the executive director of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities to defer the decision
the five Miami-Dade County commissioners on the policy council moved forward a proposal to put a five-year moratorium on any new annexation or incorporation applications of unincorporated industrial or commercially zoned areas to preserve tax funds and
Two pending annexation applications from Doral and one from Florida City will be exempt
Also exempt: an incorporation application in Northwest Dade
and any annexations of single family areas
This is only for commercial and industrial zones
“Why isn’t anybody talking about the residential areas
Because they cost more to service,” said Commissioner Kevin Cabrera
which now goes to the full commission for final approval
“They want to cherry pick the areas that produce revenue.”

“All these other people got their brass ring and they got their annexations rammed through
“We gotta be exempted from this ordinance and we gotta have an up or down vote.”
Miami Springs Mayor Maria Puente Mitchell asked for a deferral so the electeds in all 34 municipalities had “time to digest” the ordinance
“It came about very quickly and I don’t understand the rush.” She and others said there was no emergency
“It’s either a moratorium for all cities
or none at all,” Puente Mitchell said
Sweetwater Mayor Jose “Pepe” Diaz
once a county commissioner not too long ago
said he understood how the county works but asked for a deferral so that there could be more clarity and understanding of the ramifications
“We’re all good friends and we’re all trying to find solutions for our future,” Diaz said
asking the policy council not to “fast track” it
This has been on the agenda for a week,” said Commission and Council Chairman Anthony Rodriguez
“If you guys didn’t catch it ’til Friday
That could sound like the chairman is basically telling people to go through a gatekeeper
said all the proper notice had been made and that it was an emergency because of the budget shortfall the county could be facing for the next five years
in part due to the establishment of the constitutional offices
“It’s a financial emergency,” he said
mentioning an item that passed the commission meeting last week to hire a consultant that would identify efficiencies and cost savings in different departments
“We’re at a pivotal point in time with the constitutional offices being added,” Cabrera said
“If we continue to allow these areas that support these services

He cited a memo from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava dated last July that says the proposed annexations of industrial and commercial zones “create significant financial impact” that could lead to adjusted services
“And adjusted services means less services,” Cabrera said
Additionally, straw polls in both Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens indicated that a majority of the business owners and commercial property owners did not want to be annexed, Cabrera said. Business and property owners west of the MIA zone protested the proposed annexation into Virginia Gardens in January of 2023
“Why should we raise taxes on small businesses to fund government that is out of control,” Cabrera said
“It’s not those small business fault that your millage rate is through the roof
Why don’t you review your finances.”
a lot of these are land grabs,” Cabrera said
Tough talk from someone who is going to be vacating that seat soon for an ambassadorship to Panama
“A lot of people said they haven’t had time to digest this
Unless its an exclusively residential area
If you and all the lawyers and all the members and all the city attorneys
town attorneys can’t figure out eight pages in more than a week
Diaz I know has called everybody under the moon
For somebody who says he has a lot of experience in county government
that’s kind of concerning,” Cabrera said
“And when he talks about process… it seems he has short term memory
committee was waived and then he used his superpowers that is for emergencies related to Covid.”

“So if we want to talk about process
process was definitely not followed.”
He also reminded Diaz that he had voted in favor of two earlier moratoriums in 2005 and 2007
This is because of financial issues,” Cabrera said
“We are protecting the county taxpayer.”
He said the five year term was necessary because the future of the constitutional offices and their costs are still unknown
Commissioner Rene Garcia said he has always thought the county should all be incorporated and the county commission could just work on regional issues
But he supported the measure because of the uncertainty of future revenues and costs
a financial issue that we have that we don’t know what it’s going to look like,” Garcia said
