Your hilariously snarky outbursts over the Ferrari radio made the fourth annual Miami Grand Prix memorable for audiences around the world
No offense, Oscar Piastri — the McLaren driver has won four of the six races with 16 more to go during the 2025 F1 season
The thing about this Miami race: Lando Norris finished nearly five seconds behind his teammate Piastri in second place — and 37 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell in third place
Any intrigue for a thrilling finish was gone like Piastri when he took the lead from reigning F1 champion Max Verstappen during the 14th lap — with 43 laps to go
That was until Hamilton jeered back and forth with race engineer Riccardo Adami when he had the pace to pass Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc with about 10 laps remaining
As Hamilton stewed behind Leclerc without instruction
Hamilton said: “This is not good teamwork — that’s all I can say.”
When Ferrari finally cleared Hamilton to pass after several laps
he snapped: “Have a tea break while you’re at it — C’mon.”
Ferrari informed Hamilton that Williams driver Carlos Sainz was 1.4 seconds behind him — get this — after he was asked to return his place back to Leclerc
“You want me to let him pass as well?” Hamilton shouted over the radio
lighthearted and reflective after the race
He said he was even happy with finishing in eighth place — if you can believe that from the seven-time F1 champion — while Leclerc finished seventh
And I'm not going to apologize for being a fighter,” Hamilton told USA TODAY Sports
“I'm not going to apologize for still wanting it
Hamilton said he wasn’t upset at Leclerc or Ferrari
His car simply isn’t performing how he’d prefer overall
but he felt it “really come alive” after getting onto medium tires
He was able to at least see a McLaren car in the distance
He thought he had some chance to contend for at least sixth place
right?” Hamilton said of his race comments
“I don’t know what you’re gonna write — whether I was disrespectful or whatever ...”
Insert a gif of Michael Scott from “The Office” with his “thank you” hands directed right at you
The Miami Grand Prix race would have ended without a climax if Hamilton’s sarcasm and wit didn’t carry the end of the race from an entertainment standpoint
The gap between Norris and Russell was so vast
Sky Sports analyst and former driver Martin Brundle said: “McLaren could’ve made another pit stop just for the fun of it
It’s also a measure of how difficult it is for Formula One to hold onto the American attention span
beyond the fans who already clamor for the sport
This is far from a Miami problem. The Miami race has become one of the best on the F1 calendar four years into a 10-year deal. An extension was announced this week for another 10 years of the Miami Grand Prix through 2041
F1’s presence in the United States runs through Miami — just like it does at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin
is the moments of pure entertainment are few and far in between
They’re easily digested on social media clips instead of a two-hour race
unless the novice fan has elevated to appointment viewer
Significant intrigue comes at the start of every race around Turn 1 where the pack fights mightily to get out in front
Some drivers might overtake their struggling counterparts after the formation line is set
Others will swap places after they pit once or twice during the race
and finished third in the Miami sprint race
But the pressure is mounting after his Grand Prix performances in his first season with Ferrari
and seventh again in Saudi Arabia before what unfolded in Miami
Leclerc and Ferrari appeared to all be at odds six races into being on the same side
The drama that unfolded was sports and reality TV at its finest
“I could have said way worse things on the radio
You hear some of the things other people said in the past,” Hamilton said
You got to understand that we're under a huge amount of pressure within the cars
You're never going to get the most peaceful messages in the heat of battle
Added Leclerc: “There’s no bad feelings with Lewis
All I understand is he wants to try and optimize just as much as I want to try and optimize the car potential.”
Ferrari trails first-place McLaren in the Constructors’ standings by 152 points
They’re also looking up at Mercedes and Red Bull
Hamilton is in seventh in the Drivers’ standings
Leclerc (53) and his 18-year-old Mercedes replacement Kimi Antonelli (48)
Hamilton’s elusive eighth title might still be elusive this season
But he’s striving for a chance to just compete at this point in his transition from Mercedes to Ferrari
“I truly believe that we fix some of the problems that we have with the car
we'll be back in the fight … It just can't come quick [enough],” Hamilton said
“I look forward to the time where maybe I can fight for a podium — and be nice.”
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- "Are they cheering for me?" asked Evander Holyfield, former heavyweight champion of the world, looking up from the ground floor of the Miami International Autodrome and into the tiered balconies above. That's where hundreds of Formula 1 fans were spending their Sunday afternoon
leaning over the railings and screaming down into the paddock below
hoping to grab the attention of the celebrities making their way toward the fourth edition of the Miami Grand Prix
I'm not young enough and cool enough for this crowd," the 62-year-old "Real Deal" said with a wink
a shake of his head and a point to a mob of people moving by him
swirling around someone hidden between them
"That guy" was Timothée Chalamet, the 29-year-old actor from "Dune" and the Bob Dylan biopic (not to mention College GameDay)
the very young crowd indeed roared for the very young star
But not even the Oscar nominee could generate the suddenly elevated level of high-pitched screams elicited by the sight of the even younger men on their way to work
As each race car driver emerged one by one from the F1 team HQs constructed on the field of Hard Rock Stadium and snaked through the crowd toward the garages where their machines were being prepared
the decibel level of the audible adulation unleashed upon them felt directly tied to their age
"It is good to be young and fast," observed Sir Jackie Stewart, 85, as he watched 25-year-old Lando Norris and McLaren handlers power by
"That's the proper way to describe Formula 1 right now: young and fast."
who on Friday became the youngest F1 racer to ever win a pole position
Antonelli won't turn 19 until the end of August
"I spent 15 years trying to get my kids to watch F1 with me on Sunday mornings and they were always like
it's boring and we want to sleep in!'" said Miami resident Oscar Martinez
his arms and legs stretched out over the seats of Section 301 in the upper deck of Hard Rock Stadium
watching a race on the giant TV screens inside the home of the Miami Dolphins as those seats were rattled by that race unfolding around the stadium
both dressed head to toe in McLaren papaya and riveted by the action outside
they come wake me up on Sunday mornings to watch F1 and these tickets were the only Christmas presents they wanted." He shouted the next sentence just loud enough so they could hear him

Never in F1's 75 years has the globe's most beloved form of motorsport been this cool in the United States and certainly has never grown this fast among the young
Americans have surged toward F1 since summer 2020
when everyone was stuck in their homes to wait out the COVID-19 pandemic and
like "Tiger King" and "Gilmore Girls" reruns
discovered the already-existing streaming series "Drive to Survive." Suddenly
a sport that had long been beloved by a devoted but niche and
gray-haired auto racing audience of dads (no offense
Martinez of Section 301) became a curiosity for millions who prior didn't know the difference between a safety car and the Safety Dance
Amid a global fanbase estimated at 750 million people, an estimated 42% is under the age of 35, the kind of numbers that make U.S.-based NASCAR and IndyCar green as a starting flag with envy
F1 claims that one out of every two American fans of its series started watching the sport within the past five years
it has more than 20 million new fans and that its fastest growing demographic is females between the ages of 16 and 24
It would be easy to write off all of those stats as fuzzy marketing math
spun by a sanctioning body eager to brag on itself
But anyone who spent time in the Miami International Autodrome grandstands on Sunday has plenty of instant anecdotal evidence to back those claims
Nate Saunders and Laurence Edmondson geek out about Formula One and the personalities behind it on "Unlapped," ESPN's weekly F1 podcast. Listen to 'Unlapped'
"The Formula 1 audience has become so much broader
but here in the United States it's been dramatic
but we are proud to be a part of that reason."
The 1980s and '90s were largely barren of Stateside F1 events
with Miami in the spring and trips to Austin
After recent years of noise about more American cities wanting their own Formula 1 weekends
it appears that this trio will be the lineup for the foreseeable future
The Circuit of the Americas in Austin has a contract with F1 through next season
Las Vegas has already signed on all the way through 2032
Judging from all of those young people leaning over the rails and all of those just-as-young people they were shouting at
And none show signs of finding something else to do anytime soon
As underlined -- very loudly -- when Piastri took his fourth win of the season and sixth GP victory in nine months
and the resulting cheers that went up from the grandstands inside Hard Rock Stadium momentarily matched the roar of the twenty 1,000-horsepower machines outside
"You can feel that energy, no doubt. I know that I do, and I'm certainly no youngster," Red Bull boss Christian Horner said on Friday when asked about the fountain of youth running through the paddock and the midways that surround it. He is the employer of Verstappen and his 24-year-old teammate, Yuki Tsunoda

and the biggest obstacle to a Miami Dolphins trade involving their Pro Bowl cornerback continues to be his contract
It's not just about the Dolphins having to deal with the cap ramifications associated with a Ramsey trade
it's about finding a trade partner willing to take on the veteran's contract
And it may get to the point where the Dolphins will have no choice but to agree to pay some of that salary to facilitate a trade
And while the circumstances are a bit different
they Dolphins have done this before — with quarterback Ryan Tannehill in 2019
When the organization set out to execute a complete rebuilding project — way beyond a simple reset — one of the decisions the Dolphins made was moving forward without their 2012 first-round pick after seven seasons
wasn't as simple as finding a team looking for a quarterback
The Dolphins eventually were able to trade Tannehill to help get him off their books in 2020
which would have been the final year of a four-year extension he signed in 2016
the Dolphins agreed to pay him a $5 million signing bonus to push his cap number to $18.4 million for that 2019 season and got a measly return from the Tennessee Titans
In exchange for Tannehill and a sixth-round pick
the Dolphins got a 2020 fourth-round selection along with a seventh-round choice
Ramsey is a lot more proven commodity as a player at this time than Tannehill was in 2019
but he's also older and actually is due to make more money than Tannehill was that year
The Dolphins already have paid Ramsey a $4 million bonus this offseason
and he's got $21 million more coming his way in 2025
which an acquiring team would fully absorb at this time barring an arrangement with Miami
finding a team willing to do that might be difficult
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay kind of suggested that when he spoke late last week about Ramsey and his potential interest in bringing him back to Southern California
“He is a total stud,” McVay told Adam Schein of SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio
“and you look at — obviously he has continued to play at a really high level
He and I have kept in great touch even since we ended up trading him to Miami
“And so there are a lot of layers when you’re talking about a player of his caliber
the compensation that they would be looking for in exchange for receiving a player of his magnitude
And so those conversations are ongoing as I’m sure they are with multiple teams
but we’re never gonna shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail.”
The Rams make perfect sense as a trade partner for the Dolphins because they have a need in the secondary
reached the second round of the playoffs last season and have a quarterback (Matthew Stafford) who probably has only a couple of years left
as it will be for any potential trade partner
will be the trade compensation and Ramsey's salary
with a team likely willing to give Miami more in exchange for Ramsey the more salary the Dolphins are willing to absorb
The Rams have a little more than $18 million of effective cap space
currently have a little under $11.7 million of effective cap space (includes space needed for draft class) and their 2025 cap clearly would benefit for any Ramsey trade occurring after June 1
the Dolphins would have to count $6.7 million for Ramsey
as opposed to more than $25 million if they traded him before June 1 (though $18.4 million would go against the 2026 cap)
Dolphins GM Chris Grier said there were discussions with other teams throughout the weekend about a Ramsey
Grier said the Dolphins won't necessarily wait until after June 1 to consummate a deal even if that would make the cap hit less painful
emphasizing he doesn't know when the right opportunity will surface
was asked point blank about how he would describe his relationship with Ramsey
and he sidestepped the question saying there was no purpose in talking about it and taking away attention from the draft picks

Mike McDaniel led the Miami Dolphins to the NFL playoffs in each of his first two seasons in charge of the team
They couldn't quite make it back to the postseason last year
The Dolphins posted an 8-9 record in 2024. They had an outside chance to make the postseason entering the season's final week, but a loss to the New York Jets guaranteed Miami would not earn the AFC's No
Miami spent the 2025 NFL offseason focused on retooling. They had a key loss on the offensive line, as veteran left tackle Terron Armstead decided to retire, and the team may end up trading its top cornerback Jalen Ramsey ahead of the season
the Dolphins' potential will also be based on how difficult their schedule is for the 2025 NFL season

Miami's final three opponents – the Chargers
Colts and Commanders – were determined based on the Dolphins' second-place finish in the AFC East last season
The NFL is set to reveal its 2025 schedule in full on Wednesday

New York Red Bulls - Game HighlightsWatch the Game Highlights from Inter Miami CF vs
Lionel Messi struck the emphatic final goal as Inter Miami snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 home win over the New York Red Bulls at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale
Messi found the net for the first tome in nearly a month with an unstoppable left-footed strike from the center of the box following a one-two with Telasco Segovia midway through the second half to make sure of a much-needed victory for Miami
It was Miami's first game since losing both legs of its Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal with the Vancouver Whitecaps to see its hopes dashed of a first continental title
In between, Javier Mascherano's side had also lost in MLS for the first time this season, 4-3 at FC Dallas
"I think that there is already a lot of frustration," Mascherano told reporters afterward
I think we learn if in the future the results are different
And the reality is that there are high expectations and I have no problem that the demands are high
And then we know what comes with the Club World Cup and Leagues Cup."
New York had allowed just nine goals in 10 matches before Miami put on an offensive show on Saturday, starting with Fafà Picault's opening goal in the ninth minute
Defender Marcelo Weigandt added a second on the half-hour mark before Luis Suárez found the net to end his nine-goal scoreless streak
"The return of Luis Suárez scoring makes us happy because we know that strikers live off the goal," Mascherano said
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting pulled a goal back for the Red Bulls shortly before halftime but Messi's team-leading ninth goal of the season in all competitions ensured it would prove no more than a consolation
The result left Miami fourth in the Eastern Conference
ahead of a trip to face Minnesota United in a week's time

Inter Miami’s clash with the New York Red Bulls was not yet half over, and Lionel Messi looked exhausted
Messi’s resilience epitomizes the task facing IMCF after their humbling ConcaChampions exit at the hands of the incredible Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday
the nadir of a bruising fortnight in which the previously undefeated Herons lost three straight games and saw their CCC dreams slip away
“We needed this victory after three defeats
and to have some very good feelings again,” head coach Javier Mascherano said in Spanish postgame
we had an effectiveness that we haven't had in several games
not just that we had a lot of [goalscoring] situations
"And then we attempted in the second half with the last post entries
they grew and they progressed on the field
and we were trying to avoid giving them the control of the game.”

What felt like a comfortable victory by full-time was perhaps not quite as easy as it looked
considering the intense emotions of their midweek heartbreak and the storm of doubt and criticism that followed the Whitecaps’ unexpectedly dominant dispatching of Messi & Co

“Sometimes public opinion is to analyze the results
We analyze more than the results: the content
“I understand that there's a lot of frustration
is the coaching staff and the players not being able to go to the final.”
“We've had a tough week. It was important to end the games that we've had – a ton of games – on a good note going into the couple off days that we're going to get before next week's road trip,” homegrown defender Noah Allen told MLS Season Pass after the final whistle
“So very important to get these three points that can sort our confidence back.”

Over the years, Champions Cup hangovers have become an infamous hazard for MLS sides who make deep runs. So every point, every positive result matters for Miami, particularly in light of their looming participation in the expanded Club World Cup on home soil this summer
and such high expectations for Messi & Friends
every setback provokes palpable disappointment
Yet when the dust settles after Matchday 11
the Herons will have 21 points from 10 league matches (6W-1L-3D) and sit just three points back of East leaders Columbus Crew with a game in hand
“We will try to continue to do our best. We will try to learn from our mistakes. And we will continue saying that this team can compete, and we are going to face anything that comes before us,” said Mascherano. “Today we're here to focus on MLS, trying to get to the top of this conference, and then we'll see what happens with Club World Cup, Leagues Cup
His popularity has had an enormous impact on Major League Soccer since he signed with Inter Miami in July 2023, capturing a growing television audience and inspiring record attendance everywhere he goes
With Messi's widespread appeal comes increased security risk for the face of MLS at every match
The unwanted impact of Messi's fame took center stage during Inter Miami's 4-1 win over New York Red Bulls on Saturday at Chase Stadium.

Few sports stars are as equipped to handle such a security breach
Throughout his famous career with Barcelona
Messi has faced the stressful situation countless times
When Messi arrived in the United States, Inter Miami hired a personal bodyguard for its captain. Yassine Cheuko went viral for his constant shadowing of Messi on and off the field
as well as the speed at which he ran onto the field to stop the threat of pitch invaders
Cheuko was banned from the sideline by MLS earlier this season
causing concerns over Messi's safety that were realized when the pitch invader reached him on Saturday
Messi's unexpected reaction in the heat of the moment drew a loud response from the Inter Miami crowd
The captain dismissed multiple security guards
ensuring the troublesome fan could snap a selfie with him before being dragged off the pitch and facing punishment for the poor behavior that interrupted the match

the heavens had opened again in the hours before Sunday’s race
While the showers had ceased as the start time approached – and the track was quickly drying – the teams would certainly be keeping an eye on the forecast for the 57-lap encounter
One change to the grid – which would be headed by polesitter Verstappen and second-placed Norris – saw Gasly move from P18 to the pit lane
due to the Alpine squad having changed the set-up of the car’s suspension whilst under parc ferme conditions
After a unique drivers’ parade earlier in the day in which all 20 drivers got behind the wheel of fully driveable LEGO big build cars
the field switched their focus to their usual challengers as the time for lights out neared
Once the cars had assembled on the grid and the tyre blankets were removed ahead of the expected one-stop event
it was revealed that most of the pack had opted for the medium compound
Verstappen led away from pole position as the Miami Grand Prix got underway
the five lights went out to get the Miami Grand Prix underway – and Verstappen initially got away smoothly
only to experience a slight lock-up into Turn 1 which encouraged Norris to get alongside the Red Bull
a moment of contact between the pair saw the Briton run across the apex into Turn 2 and drop a number of positions to end up in sixth
allowing Antonelli and Piastri through into second and third
The McLaren driver went on to report: “He forced me off”
Meanwhile there was trouble further back for Doohan
who made contact with the Racing Bulls of Lawson and picked up a puncture
The damage ultimately proved too much for Doohan to return to the pits
the Alpine stopping out on track which led to the deployment of a Virtual Safety Car
Shortly after the VSC period ended on Lap 4
Piastri was quick to make a move on Antonelli to snatch P2 while Norris grabbed P5 from Albon – both welcome sights for the McLaren pit wall
with Piastri subsequently starting to cut into Verstappen’s 1.5s lead
as Hamilton overtook Hadjar for 11th and Sainz took sixth from team mate Albon
It will be heavy if it hits,” Alonso was being told by his race engineer
had noted the Lap 1 incident between Verstappen and Norris before deciding that no further action was needed
with the same verdict being given to the Doohan and Lawson contact
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Pole-sitter Verstappen fends off attack from Norris who drops to P6 on the race start
Russell – who looked to be struggling with his hard tyres – Sainz
It did not take long for that to change again
as Norris soon gained another position by getting past Antonelli
There was heart-in-mouth moment for Alonso
who suffered a spin at the same corner where he crashed in Saturday’s Sprint – but fortunately managed to avoid the walls on this occasion
further tense scenes were playing out as Piastri set about trying to overtake Verstappen
with Verstappen told by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to “stay on the inside” and “make him work for it”
“It’s super slippery to drive,” Verstappen reported
After the papaya car was initially forced wide
Verstappen then out-braked himself and went wide in the process
which allowed Piastri to cut back through to become the new race leader
And just one lap later there was a sense of déjà vu for Verstappen as Norris closed in on the World Champion – but this time a move around the outside of Turn 1 did not work for the Briton
leading the McLaren team to coach him over the radio on how Piastri found a way past
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Piastri powers past Verstappen to take the lead
The battle got increasingly feisty by Lap 18
with Norris pushing Verstappen wide into Turn 11 to squeeze down the inside and take the position
The Briton subsequently handed the place back – having seemingly gone off the track when making the overtake – but then retook P2 later in the lap
became the first driver to pit on Lap 20 to switch from the medium to hard tyres – just as light drops of rain looked to be falling at the Miami International Autodrome
Would the intensity of this increase as the race progressed
a thrilling fight was playing out for 10th place between Ocon and Hamilton
with the Ferrari man eventually finding a way past the Haas to claim the final points-paying position
By Lap 24 the order ahead of Hamilton stood as Piastri
McLaren looked to be in a class of their own
with Piastri leading by eight seconds from Norris while the latter had built the same gap back to Verstappen in third – with the Mercedes pair getting closer to the Red Bull in fourth and fifth
Antonelli subsequently dived into the pits on Lap 26 – but experienced a slightly slow stop after having to wait for Sainz to go past in the pit lane
seemingly ruining the Italian’s chances of undercutting Verstappen
was warned that “possible light drops of rain” could fall in the next two laps
Verstappen could not keep the McLarens at bay
despite battling hard against both Piastri and Norris
The pit stops were soon coming in thick and fast
with Verstappen the first of the top three to stop for the hard tyres
But back on track Bearman was having mechanical problems
the Haas driver pulling off the track at Lap 29
resulting in a Virtual Safety Car being called
McLaren then called both drivers to pit in a double stack
allowing Piastri and Norris to reemerge in P1 and P2 respectively
while Russell benefitted from pitting under the VSC to take P3 from Verstappen
Others having a good phase of the race included the Williams team
with Albon picking off Antonelli for fifth while Sainz had grabbed seventh from former team mate Leclerc
But things were not going so well for Tsunoda
who had collected a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane
with the Kick Sauber driver told to retire the car after earlier complaining of engine issues
The Brazilian was ultimately unable to make it back to the pits and stopped on track
meaning that another Virtual Safety Car was deployed
an exciting battle played out between the two Ferrari cars and Sainz
with Leclerc trying to overtake for seventh – a move that he subsequently pulled off
with Hamilton then following through to move up into eighth
Sainz was involved in a scrap with former team mate Leclerc
A debate ensued over the radio at the Scuderia as Hamilton – running on the medium tyres in contrast to the hards on Leclerc’s car – suggested that he should be let by
leading the seven-time World Champion to comment that the situation was “not good teamwork” as he was kept behind
After further frustrated messages from Hamilton – who sarcastically told the team to “have a tea break while you are at it” amid a delay in making the call – the decision was eventually made to swap the cars
Lawson became the fourth retiree from the race
Piastri remained five seconds ahead of Norris in the lead – while Russell was a whole 27 seconds adrift in third
outlining the commanding performance of the McLarens
as Verstappen was on the chase in the fight for the final position on the podium
Albon was running in fifth ahead of Antonelli
with Hamilton and Leclerc still in seventh and eighth – and that situation was not settled yet
with Leclerc having significantly closed the gap to his team mate
Norris looked to be edging closer to Piastri as the Australian’s advantage came down to just over four seconds after lapping some backmarkers
Would a late-race showdown ensue between the two McLaren drivers
Hamilton made gains after starting from P12 on the grid
The stewards looked to be in for a busy evening post-race
having confirmed that they would investigate Sainz and Gasly for possible yellow flag infringements after the Grand Prix
But there was still plenty of action to be had out on track as the race entered its final five laps
with Norris again cutting Piastri’s lead down
with Hamilton having been unable to close in on Antonelli
the Briton was asked to swap positions back with Leclerc
Leclerc had been told of this before Hamilton
meaning that the seven-time World Champion had not known he was expected to yield
while Leclerc commented: “We’ll discuss after the race.” The drama was not over for Hamilton
who found himself being hunted down by the Williams of Sainz
A last-lap lunge from Sainz ultimately did not go in the Spaniard’s favour – and will also be investigated after the race
with Piastri crossing the line to clinch his fourth win of the season by 4.63s from Norris in a sublime day for McLaren
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Piastri crosses the line to take his third Grand Prix win in a row
Russell added to his tally of podium finishes by taking third
with Verstappen unable to close the gap in fourth
Albon followed in a strong fifth for Williams
ahead of the Mercedes of Antonelli in sixth and the Ferrari duo of Leclerc and Hamilton in seventh and eighth
Gasly and Hulkenberg in 11th through to 14th respectively
with Alonso and Stroll completing the classification in 15th and 16th places
A total of four drivers retired from the event
Bearman and Doohan all failed to make the chequered flag
Piastri has now increased his points tally to 131 at the top of the Drivers’ Championship
while Verstappen remains in third on 99 points
Norris and McLaren CEO Zak Brown were all smiles after a stunning performance from the team
"I won the race that I really wanted to," said Piastri
but Qualifying was probably one of my trickiest sessions of the year
To come away with a win still on Sunday is an impressive result
Obviously there was a bit of argy-bargy at Turn 1 which helped me out a little bit
and then I was aware enough to avoid Max coming through in Turn 1
From that point onwards I knew that I had a good pace advantage and clearly the car was unbelievable today."
After a week off, F1 will travel to Imola for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix from May 16-18. Head to the RACE HUB to find out how you can follow the action

Lewis Hamilton has reflected on the tense radio messages he made during the Miami Grand Prix
conceding that "I'm sure people didn't like certain comments" but emphasizing that they were said during a "frustrating" moment as Ferrari tried to maximise a lacklustre race
The seven-time World Champion endured a difficult weekend in Miami as he was consigned to a 12th-place starting spot on the grid and was left battling Esteban Ocon on the fringes of the top-10 with the hard compound tyre in the early stages of the race

A mid-race Virtual Safety Car transformed his race
as it allowed the Briton to make a pit stop without losing as much time compared with those ahead and he closed on team mate Charles Leclerc and the Williams of Carlos Sainz
He moved up a spot as Leclerc passed Sainz at Turn 1
and with the softer medium tyre looked quicker than his team mate and asked his Ferrari engineer to be allowed ahead
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Tense radio exchanges as Hamilton and Leclerc argue over Ferrari strategy
But it took several laps before Ferrari asked Leclerc to cede the spot having initially told both drivers to hold position
prompting several irate messages from Hamilton including one that suggested they could "have a tea break while you're at it"
Hamilton clarified that his comments were made in the heat of the moment and that his remarks would be discussed amongst the team
"I lost a lot of time behind Charles and in that moment for sure I was like
come on let's make a concise decision really quick
"I'm sure people didn't like certain comments but you've got to understand it was frustrating
people say way worse things than what I say
It was more sarcastic than anything and I'm not frustrated now
we'll have discussions and we'll keep pushing."
He added: "Let's not get emotional about it
Hamilton was unable to pull away from his team mate who was able to stay within DRS range and also began to complain about dirty air from following
‘In the heat of the moment it’s frustrating’ – Hamilton on tense radio calls in Miami
Hamilton eventually finished eighth after making contact with Sainz on the last lap as the Williams driver made a late lunge into the final hairpin
"For us to be battling them and struggling to beat them [Williams] just shows that we have a lot of performance to find," Hamilton said

"We're lacking performance in the car but I think we know where we are losing it
We've got some improvements to make to the car before we can unlock that performance but we won't give up
Leclerc was only able to finish one place higher in seventh
nearly a minute behind race winner Oscar Piastri during a race which saw only two brief Virtual Safety Cars as Ferrari's race pace was laid bare
we need to do better and we are in a difficult situation at the moment
I just hope we can turn that situation around as soon as possible."

As is often the case with Formula 1 sprint weekends
no driver strung together a truly complete run across all the relevant sessions - but this week's #1 came closest
and nailed the parts of the weekend that mattered most
How do the rankings work? The 20 drivers will be ranked in order of performance from best to worst on each grand prix weekend
This will be based on the full range of criteria
ranging from pace and racecraft to consistency and whether they made key mistakes
How close each driver got to delivering on the maximum performance potential of the car will be an essential consideration
It’s important to note both that this reflects performance across the entire weekend
cognisant of the fact that qualifying is effectively ‘lap 0’ of the race and key to laying the foundations to the race
and that it is not a ranking of the all-round qualities of each driver
It’s simply about how they performed on a given weekend
the ranking will fluctuate significantly from weekend to weekend
And with each of the 10 cars fundamentally having different performance potential and ‘luck’ (ie factors outside of a driver’s control) contributing to the way the weekend plays out
this ranking will also differ significantly from the overall results
Piastri would have ended the weekend with a sprint/grand prix double but for the mistimed safety car that cost him on Saturday
Want to quiz Edd about his rankings? You can do so on The Race Members' Club on Patreon. Head to this post
Right now there's 75% off your first month to celebrate F175
as he should have qualified better on both days and relied on Norris’s Turn 2 excursion to jump his team-mate in the grand prix
but what elevated his ranking was the intelligence with which he worked his way past Verstappen on Sunday
Verdict: Strengthened his championship credentials
Albon was unfortunate to lose an outstanding fourth place in the sprint to a safety-car delta infringement
but it was a fair cop even though the circumstances mean it doesn't dent his ranking as much as it would usually have done
qualifying performance with time lost in the chicane key to being outqualified by team-mate Carlos Sainz
beating the Ferraris and passing Antonelli along the way to take his second fifth place of the season - surviving a rub of wheels with Sainz on the first lap and opportunistically passing his team-mate again later in the first stint at a point when he wasn't expected to
Verdict: Another well-executed weekend.
Verstappen's pole position was another example of maxmising the second-best car and capitalising on the McLaren drivers slightly underdelivering
The sprint blank after finishing fourth on the road was not of his doing given Red Bull's unsafe release
while in the grand prix he was never going to be able to hang on to the lead ahead of the McLarens
Would have been third but for the timing of the VSC that let Russell jump him
with the only mild criticism a few moments in battle where he flirted with putting himself in harm's way
Verdict: Papered over the Red Bull cracks.
Fortune was on Norris's side in the sprint with the timing of the safety car turning second into first
He certainly had the pace to have won the grand prix from pole position
but his failure to maximise qualifying meant he ended up taking the risk around the outside of Verstappen in Turn 2 that led to him being forced onto the runoff
but Piastri was out of reach thanks to the time lost battling the Red Bull
Antonelli's rookie campaign had been impressive but without ever startling with his speed
He corrected that with a sensational sprint pole position
backed up by a close third in qualifying proper
Antonelli learning a big lesson at the start of the sprint when he tried to hang on around the outside of Piastri and fell back before being hit by Verstappen in the pits
although the timing of the safety car and tyre-management inexperience cost him in the grand prix
Verdict: A significant weekend in his rookie campaign
Ocon was the stronger Haas driver in Miami
although he wasn't able to translate that into a points finish
His sprint chances were compromised by a lock-up on his final qualifying lap
but he excelled by making Q3 for the main event
After slipping behind Tsunoda at the start
he defied competitive gravity in the first stint by hanging onto 10th ahead of Hamilton until lap 22
Hadjar's undercut relegated him to 12th in a car that didn't quite have the pace to fight back
admitting after qualifying that he lacked confidence with things "not clicking"
But he stuck to his task and was rewarded with race results that were ultimately as good as they were going to get for Mercedes
That this counts as a difficult weekend for him performance-wise is testament to the quality of his season so far
although he was a step behind Antonelli on qualifying pace
he breezed into Q2 and potentially had the pace to make the top 10 but for failing to improve on his final lap
which started to go awry when he had a big snap in Turn 2
He had a good race until an engine problem eliminated him
coming close to passing Hadjar in the first stint
The Racing Bulls car vied with the Haas for sixth-best in Miami
and Hadjar accordingly spent much of his weekend floating around the periphery of the points
His sprint qualifying ninth place was the standout moment
He rued missing out on denying the penalised Tsunoda the final point on Sunday by 0.168s
having lost just over a quarter of a second to him on the final lap
This was a step forward from Bahrain and Jeddah
although Hamilton still wasn't quite at the level of his team-mate
A well-timed switch to slicks in the sprint allowed him to take third place
while in the race the VSC and an opportunistic pass on Sainz left him behind Leclerc on a softer tyre
When Ferrari eventually waved him past Leclerc
so Hamilton dropped back behind late on.
Stroll's fifth place in the sprint owed much to a well-timed switch to slicks
He also produced a superb first racing lap to climb from 15th to 11th
having been denied a place in SQ2 by having to go round Verstappen approaching Turn 17
he was a step behind Alonso although finished close to him in the race in what proved to be the slowest car
This was one of those weekends where Bearman struggled to string everything together as effectively as his team-mate
although in the moments he did the pace was good
take a point in the sprint before a penalty for an unsafe release that was not of his making
so from the back row he was destined for a finish outside the points anyway before an engine failure eliminated him
but he didn't always deploy it when he needed it
His sprint qualifying performance was impressive
He should at least have made Q2 in qualifying proper
but for an error at the start of the lap that proved
but Sauber's puzzling decision not to take the free gift of a VSC pitstop after starting on hards compromised that
Miami proved to be a weak track for Alpine
although Gasly grabbed a fortuitous point in the sprint after four cars ahead were penalised - a reward for keeping it clean
He wasn't happy with the car in qualifying
meaning he was eliminated in Q1 while team-mate Doohan advanced
He started from the pitlane after suspension set-up changes and drove a decent race in a doomed cause.
This weekend was a microcosm of Doohan's season
While he attributed not getting a second lap in SQ1 to the release of his team-mate
he was ultimately responsible for the pushback required to avoid clipping the pitwall that cost him key places in the queue
He also put himself in a risky position at Turn 1 on Sunday
resulting in the collision with Lawson - although bad luck also played a part in his fate
Alonso starred in the sprint element of the weekend
putting the Aston Martin where it had no business to be in qualifying before being eliminated by the Lawson clash while on course for his first points of the season - something that could have been avoided had his push to take slicks earlier been heeded
That form was impossible to repeat in qualifying proper as rivals extracted more of their potential
but he blotted his copybook in the grand prix with an early spin
albeit one that didn't impact what was always going to be a lowly result.
Verdict: Unrewarded sprint heroics the highlight.
Even when you consider the fact he didn't have Red Bull's minor floor upgrade
He was unfortunate to be eliminated in SQ1 after not getting a final lap in
but was the first to switch to slicks and bagged sixth in the sprint after four cars were penalised
He was puzzled after producing what he felt was his best lap of the weekend in Q3 - as it was one that barely improved on his Q2 time
slipping to 10th thanks to Hamilton getting a cheap pitstop under the VSC
staying just far enough clear of Hadjar to hold the position when the five-second pitlane speeding penalty he carelessly acquired was applied
Verdict: Not close enough to Verstappen's pace
Leclerc was dissatisfied with Ferrari both in terms of the pace of its car and the way it managed team orders in the grand prix
but ultimately got pretty much everything he could out of the package
but while he was a passenger once he aquaplaned on a lap to the grid for the sprint
crashing in such circumstances even in terrible conditions has to cost him heavily
Verdict: Sprint disaster tanks his ranking
The sprint component of the weekend was a disaster for Sainz
with a lock-up on his final SQ2 lap leaving him down the grid
then a bad misjudgement in the chicane while chasing Stroll costing him points
Sainz qualifying well but losing ground at the start when Norris rejoined in front of him
rubbing wheels with Albon and picking up floor damage
The VSC timing meant he fell into the clutches of the Ferraris
with both jumping him at the restart - a late lunge on Hamilton at the final corner not enough to allow him to reclaim a place
but this was one of those weekends where things just didn't come together
Sprint qualifying would have been better but for a small mistake
with a points finish lost for causing the collision with Alonso
A sensor problem cost him power at the end of his Q1 lap
with sidepod damage sustained in the collision with Doohan at Turn 1 meaning his race was an exercise in battling on hoping for a miracle before he eventually retired his hobbled car

Formula One’s driver parade for the 2025 Miami Grand Prix will surely go down as one of the most memorable in the sport’s recent history
the drivers swapped the flatbed truck that usually takes them around the track to wave to the fans for full-size
“That was the most fun drivers’ parade we’ve ever had,” Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton said
“Some dirty driving from this one here (Gasly)
there’s quite a bit of Lego debris on the track,” Max Verstappen said
With liveries identical to those of their real-world counterparts
this was an ambitious project enacted as part of F1’s partnership with Lego
It was over a year in the making and required tons of bricks to assemble
The Athletic was granted access to Lego’s ‘big builds’ factory on the outskirts of Prague
Czechia (more widely known in English as the Czech Republic)
and even get a chance to jump into the cockpit
Just setting foot inside Lego’s factory is enough to bring childhood memories flooding back
offers a peek into Lego’s big projects for the future
Dotted around the central warehouse are many large-scale models that will be used at Lego theme parks
as well as its other top-secret big build projects
Builders sit at work stations with instructions and trays of bricks all around
It’s no different from how kids would build Lego sets
albeit with glue and hammers easily at their disposal
But taking up a considerable amount of the empty floor space here is a line of F1 cars
They’re being readied to take to the track ahead of the Miami Grand Prix
Each of the 10 teams has a full-scale F1 car that has been faithfully reconstructed — or
constructed — to look as close to the real-life thing as possible
This requires around 400,000 bricks per car
down to slightly different part shapes between each team’s cars
Some have skinnier sidepods or a larger sidepod undercut
while even team sponsors have had their logos replicated with the same level of prominence — the text spelled out using the smallest bricks available

Plans for F1 car big builds were first floated in early 2024
efforts were made to make the impossible possible
and all the F1 teams worked perfectly,” Smida said
it was a surprise how it was possible with so many companies.”
F1 teams are notoriously very secretive about their car designs
they were more than happy to share as much as possible to make them take accurate shape
This started with Lego’s new Speed Champions product
launched for 2025 featuring small car kits of all 10 teams
took these small models as a starting point to build into more complex life-size models
we transformed that into an upscaled build using our software
working very closely with our mechanical engineers and all the departments to make sure this would be a feasible thing,” he told The Athletic
Jurion worked with a team of 26 fellow designers and engineers on the project
I’d been asked to do some concepts for that particular thing
It was the first drivable car that Jurion had worked on for Lego
but not the first time the company had embarked on an ambitious big build for an automotive project
Lando Norris drove a Lego version of the McLaren P1 supercar around Silverstone
as this was constructed using specialized Tecnic bricks that typically strengthen structures by design
instead of the traditional and simple ‘Lego System’ bricks at play here
the F1 cars required a very different approach
the 400,000 bricks — weighing about a ton in total — were constructed around a steel frame that weighs another 500 kg
The building team at Kladno glued all the bricks together to provide extra strength
while the car itself was split into five different brick sections (cockpit
rear structure and the halo) to be brought together
“We had to really streamline the process because we have 10 of them,” said Jurion
we decided to have all of the components integrated into the chassis and then we would build the bricks around it.”
The fact that the cars have to be mobile also presented a challenge to Lego’s designers and engineers
making it far more complicated than a traditional
stationary build that might sit on show for people to admire instead of actually moving
you need to have an engine (an electric powertrain in this case),” said Smida
you need something to connect to the wheels — a gearbox and a differential
You need some steering (components) and the steering wheel.”
Smida said the group designed a special steering rack
as they needed one much smaller to fit into F1-sized cockpits compared to full-size road car Lego replicas
He also said Lego worked with a racing brake manufacturer to get brakes that would work sufficiently
Then came the challenge of getting the drivers — plural — into one car
As seen during the Miami parade lap on Sunday
the cockpits had to be big enough for both drivers from each team to sit inside the car
“We had to tweak it quite a lot to accommodate the second driver,” said Jurion
“We had to make them a little bit longer.”
The second driver sits behind the typical F1 cockpit seating position
both drivers have seat belts inside the cockpit
even though a decision was also taken to limit the cars to a speed of 12 miles per hour from what is provided by the powertrain
it took over 2,000 production hours spread across the Lego team in three weeks to construct each car
they were tested in an underground car park that was big enough to drive the cars around
ensuring they would be strong enough to get around the Miami lap
The electric powertrain provides a decent getaway
as Smida shows on an open expanse of floor in the Kladno factory
the cockpits also have a series of switches and buttons that can be used to turn the powertrain on and off
I couldn’t say no to a chance to get into the car and check it out firsthand — even if I wasn’t allowed to drive it
getting into the cockpit requires careful choreography
you step onto the sidepod — trusting my entire body weight on a mass of Lego bricks made me very tentative
but it held up just fine — before stepping onto the seat (thankfully not made out of Lego)
I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of F1 drivers squabbling over who would be allowed to drive and who would be forced to sit awkwardly in the space behind
the cars were packed up and shipped off to Miami
A special Lego garage was put into the fan area at the Hard Rock Stadium so everyone could look at the cars
Ferrari even took its replica into the F1 pit lane
But the fact these cars were fully drivable was kept under wraps by F1 until the parade itself began
to bring a little extra surprise for all the fans watching
What was evident from speaking with both Jurion and Smida was the immense pride they felt over the project
it was the perfect combination of his great passions in life
“Seeing them drive the cars will be amazing.”
The Miami GP powers a billion-dollar engine of entertainment
But some are still weighing whether the trade-offs are worth it
On a humid Sunday afternoon in 2022, a who’s who of Hollywood’s rolling credits, Silicon Valley tech tycoons and the internet’s favorite micro-celebrities sat comfortably in shaded trackside VIP suites as 20 cars jolted past. Formula One, America’s latest sporting obsession
had finally carved out a home in South Florida and it fit Miami’s over-the-top image
Four years into F1’s 20-year stay in the 305
the event has solidified itself as a place to see and be seen: everyone from Kardashians to A-list actors to sports stars has lined up for a joy ride around the turquoise circuit’s 19 corners
This Sunday’s race will be no different. But a few hundred feet outside Hard Rock Stadium’s walls sits a different side of Miami, one that isn’t even within city limits. And Hard Rock’s history is an example of how much stadiums can have an effect on the people who live near them in the US.
is a thriving African-American city – an economic haven for Black Miamians forced out of other neighborhoods as Miami built up and out
bring in $60,000 a year and more than 13% of the city’s 110,000 people live in poverty
While residents may not position themselves outside the stadium this Sunday
F1’s move to Miami Gardens followed a pattern: events that whiter and wealthier neighborhoods opposed – like the world’s largest hip-hop festival – ended up at Hard Rock Stadium
The Miami Grand Prix is just the latest example
F1 proposed a race in downtown Miami in 2018
just as the sport began to swell stateside
Residents in a majority-white neighborhood filed a cease-and-desist order citing traffic and noise concerns
The potential for an F1 grand prix down Biscayne Boulevard was quickly squashed by the city council
Organizers pivoted their sights to Miami Gardens
the largest predominantly Black neighborhood in Florida
historically redlined communities as a dumping ground for undesirable spectacles is routine across the US and is “the path of least resistance”
an associate professor at Florida State University who centers his research on how stadiums exacerbate environmental inequalities
“The decision doesn’t escape me that [the Miami GP] was proposed downtown and they said
Residents with addresses lining the stadium sued then-Miami-Dade County mayor Carlos Giménez, F1, Hard Rock Stadium and the Miami Dolphins for racial discrimination
led by former county commissioners Betty Ferguson and Barbara Jordan
raised similar arguments as downtown Miami homeowners
including traffic and public health concerns
“We really believe it’s environmental racism,” Ferguson said at the time
He recommended locals who had concerns stay inside their homes and wear earplugs
has measured air quality and noise across the circuit’s campus each year
The results show that noise and air pollution from 2022 to 2024 passed EPA and OSHA industry standards
“The air pollution figures are actually lower following the Miami GP than other events because we provide so many alternate transportation and ride-share options to reduce cars on the local roads,” a race spokesperson said
“That doesn’t mean that therefore there is no effect because they were unable to show noise pollution,” Kellison says
Despite locals saying they would continue to work within the political system for justice
haven’t posted since the inaugural grand prix
The Guardian spoke to a number of people who said they oppose the race
“The political system is probably not in [people who oppose the GP’s] favor right now,” Madeleine Orr
a sport ecologist who founded the Sport Ecology Group with Kellison
Over the past two years, Miami mayor Francis Suarez garnered backlash for attending the Miami GP
once with Florida’s wealthiest man and a second time with his private equity firm
Some of the same county commissioners who voted against F1’s presence in the community officially declared 4 May “Formula One Day” last year
One of those elected officials included Oliver Gilbert who
said: “It’s not a place to dump events that are toxic to people.”
Supporters make the economic impact argument: stadiums funnel money into the local community through job creation and tax revenue boosts
along with transforming cities into more livable and desirable spaces by bringing more efficient buildings and natural disaster prevention to neighborhoods
Hard Rock Stadium is a top employer in the city and the 2025 F1 race will credential 18,000 people
Fifteen locally owned restaurants will partner with the track
The first three years brought more than $1bn in economic impact and boosted bottom lines for the sport – the 2024 Miami race shattered F1’s viewership record
The F1 ruling body’s current environmental standards do not require circuits to think about a race’s impact on host communities
she believes the sport is working in good faith to consider how its presence could affect locals
Orr will join the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) University as a visiting sustainability professor this year
There have been efforts to make sure the race benefits the local community
Before Hard Rock started hosting the grand prix
the stadium and the event promoter outlined a set of conditions with the Miami-Dade County Commission
The Community Benefits Agreement requires F1 to host the race “in a manner that provides substantial economic and community benefits that directly support city residents and locally-owned businesses to participate in the event and promote the city as the first majority African-American city to host a Formula 1 race.” That means providing $5m in community funding and committing to noise mitigation
air quality monitoring and racing outside of school hours
“F1 in Schools” included opening the sport’s paddock to local students and interns for STEM programming
the partnership has settled into a rhythm of community engagement: hosting a “Business of F1 Community Workshop,” creating scholarships for students at Miami Gardens’ two local universities
handing out 1,500 free tickets per year for residents and diverting food waste to local food banks
The stadium lessened traffic concerns with a $17m investment in tunnels and pedestrian bridges
it has allocated a portion of parking revenues to a local neighborhood association
a Miami Gardens resident who moved to the area before the stadium was built
and focuses instead on the benefits the stadium has brought to the community
“It’s not like the [engines] that used to be loud,” Reyno said
Orr says bringing a grand prix to a city raises questions
we are going to necessarily have a carbon footprint,” she says
“But what are the exchanges we can have with the community
What kinds of tech transfer can we bring and then leave here
What kinds of solutions can be implemented at this place?”
But not everyone was convinced by the Community Benefits Agreement
Kellison says some questioned whether the agreement was “enough to compensate for the disruption that [the race] is going to cause
just quality of life for a weekend.” Two county commissioners voted against the agreement
Even before the starting lights go out on Sunday afternoon and engines screech to life
the stadium’s community efforts have righted its reputation
“Even given what I know and who I work with
I will probably side with residents on this,” she says
“I don’t know that I would want it in my backyard.”
“I think it’s important to recognize the fact that this is not just an isolated group of naysayers who are ‘not my backyard’ people and would oppose everything,” Kellison says. “If they’ve been talking about events at the stadium or around the stadium site for a number of years, a number of decades, perhaps they’re on to something.”
Calling in from his office on Florida State University’s campus, Kellison pauses and recalls a line he read once that stuck with him: “Race tracks aren’t meant to be in neighborhoods.”

Hear from McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
"It's a great feeling to have won the race today
Clearly the car was unbelievable today and we were able to use that pace advantage
That’s down to everyone here trackside and the whole team at the factory putting in an incredible amount of hard work to get us to where we are now
there’s lots of learnings to take away from the weekend but I’m very
“A good result for the team today and congratulations to Oscar on the victory
Max [Verstappen] put up a fight at the start and frustratingly I paid the price but that's just the way it can be in racing
The team have done an amazing job all weekend
the car has been beautiful with great pace and the double-shuffle pit stop was mega
I'll take all these positives and get my head down at the factory to focus on Imola in two weeks' time.”
Explore theMiami Collection“Today was an exceptional result for McLaren at the end of a remarkable weekend
followed by first and second again today in the Miami Grand Prix
which is a first for any team in a Sprint weekend
and we’re mindful that tomorrow is the anniversary of our first victory of this era
which was a fundamental milestone in the direction and development of our team
I would like to thank the people at McLaren who have designed
as well as our technical and commercial partners
and fans who are with us on this exciting journey
it was great to see the car performing so well during the race
taking the opportunities that came his way and displaying excellent pace
Lando was delayed in the mêlée at the start
recovering from sixth and then overtaking Max Verstappen later in the stint
but without this he was in strong contention for the win also
“This is a great foundation for the rest of the year
but we also know that maybe these were exceptional circumstances
and see where it takes us now the racing season moves back to Europe.”

Frederic Vasseur has defended Ferrari's Miami Grand Prix team orders calls and, although he accepted the frustration of drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton during the race
denied that there was any inertia in decision-making
When it became apparent Hamilton couldn't make any further inroads into the Italian after cutting the gap down by a couple of seconds
Leclerc was moved back into seventh place – although he closed in further
he ran out of time to challenge the Bologna-born teen
Both Ferrari drivers admitted to displeasure around the tactics, with Hamilton reckoning that the decisions were made too slowly and Leclerc feeling uneasy with the situation given the proximity of Carlos Sainz
Vasseur said that the call was made with team policy at the forefront
and that the team was trying to understand if the drivers behind were genuinely quicker or just helped by DRS assistance
"We have a general policy and we follow the policy," Vasseur explained
"The question is not to swap and to swap back if you don't get the guy who is in front of you
"The issue at this stage of the race is to understand if the car who is behind is faster than the car who is in the front
"[After the race] I had a discussion with Lewis and I can perfectly understand the frustration
We are asking them to let their team-mates go
"And I didn't see another team do it today
That is why we took the responsibility to do it because it's the policy of the team
we can argue that it would have been better to do it half a lap before or half a lap later
But when you are on the pitwall and you have to understand if the car who is behind is faster than the car in front just for DRS or not
It's always much easier to do it two hours later
And we had a discussion and it was much more relaxed."
Vasseur denied that the decision to swap drivers was too slow
stating that Ferrari was simply attempting to dissect the information in front of the engineers to make a definitive call
He also suggested that the delays in team radio broadcasts painted a slightly worse picture of the scenario
and that the discussions were interspersed with other information
first we have to understand that it's FOM who is managing the delay; it means that sometimes we are asking them something and you have it live half a lap later or one lap later
I already had the case in the past," the Frenchman added
"And then we have tons of information that we are discussing with them about the set-up of the car and so on
And it's not always easy to ask them to do it before Turn 11 or Turn 17
"You can always argue that it would have been better to do it half a lap before or half a lap later

The Miami Grand Prix has finished - but the classification could still change as two drivers have been called to see the stewards
Two F1 drivers have been summoned to see the stewards in Miami following the race
Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly will visit the stewards' room over alleged yellow flag infringements
Three virtual safety cars were deployed during the race for mechanical-related retirements
with the neutralisation forcing all cars to follow a time delta
Sainz and Gasly could be in trouble for failing to slow under the yellow flags
While he could be dealt a time penalty for an infringement
his points could be safe as Sainz classified 14 seconds ahead of Yuki Tsunoda
crossed the line in 13th and outside the points

Formula 1's teams were back at it this past weekend at the Miami Grand Prix
It was the first of three stops in the US and five in North America as F1 capitalizes on its current wave of popularity here
The sport evidently believes something is going right—it just announced a contract extension that will see the event remain on the calendar for another 16 years
The Miami race is among the latest of F1's new breed of Grands Prix
It was originally supposed to be more of a true street circuit like Baku or Singapore or Las Vegas
with a route that crossed over a bridge into South Beach
But the track is laid out around the various parking lots of Miami's Hard Rock Stadium
like a 21st-century version of the early '80s Caesars Palace Grands Prix or the now-defunct Sochi race that wound its way around Vladimir Putin's favorite sea-side theme park
Ticket prices appear to have come down a little now that the race is in its third year
but the "beach club" and Potemkin marina remain
even if they didn't look particularly busy on any of the overhead shots
Despite what looked like sparse attendance on Friday and Saturday
we're told that 275,000 people attended across the weekend
Some might find the Miami venue a little brash
And not just with F1—check out the F1 Academy race if you can
where we saw Doriene Pin demonstrate her considerable talent yet again
this time with extremely stiff competition from Alisha Palmowski
it is hard to reconcile a contract extension until 2041 for this parkinglot event when Spa-Francorchamps—not only the best track on the calendar but also one with decades of racing history—will have to alternate with other events
so there will be no Belgian Grand Prix in 2028 or 2030
This is particularly true as F1's own press release notes that 380,000 people went to the Belgian race weekend last year
It's hard to even think what F1 will look like as it goes into the 2040s
Formula E's exclusive rights to be the FIA's electric single-seater championship will have expired
In the meantime, the agitation from some corners to change the next set of technical regulations, which go into effect next year, seems to be done. Instead, we learned from The Race that all is not entirely well with F1's synthetic fuels
These are to be introduced next year as part of the sport's efforts to become carbon-neutral by 2030
with fears that these synthetic fuels could cost more than $1,000 per gallon—it's a good thing fuel is excluded from next year's cost cap
where a short race on Saturday morning replaces one of the practice sessions
It was delayed by a heavy downpour that saw Charles Leclerc's Ferrari wreck into the wall on its way to the grid
Ferrari—wearing a ghastly livery that looked too much like the Russian flag—got caught out by the timing of the rain
and Leclerc's intermediate tires were no match for the standing water he encountered and then aquaplaned upon
Mercedes' teenage phenom Kimi Antonelli scored his first pole position to start the sprint alongside McLaren's Oscar Piastri
who beat the youngster to the turn 1 apex at the start
Antonelli's day got worse when he had to call off a pit stop after Red Bull released Max Verstappen into his path in the pit lane
effectively performing a drive-through penalty as a result
Sprint races don't normally involve tire changes
the track dried to the point that slick tires were a much faster option
relinquishing the lead to his teammate Lando Norris
who went into the pits for dry tires of his own just as a crash brought out a safety car
With Piastri forced to circulate at a much slower pace behind the safety car
Norris had time to change his tires and remain in the lead until the end of the race
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton did well in the sprint
Hamilton was much closer to his Ferrari teammate Leclerc this weekend
which would perhaps be encouraging if not for the fact that Leclerc was also just slow
both Williams cars outqualified the Ferraris for the main race
although Carlos Sainz finished just behind the pair of them on Sunday
Rain canceled Sunday's F1 Academy race and threatened to interrupt or affect the main event. But the worst of it was some spray during the driver parade, which this time made use of some full-size Lego F1 cars
Max Verstappen had dragged his car to pole position for Sunday's race and kept his elbows out at turn 2 at the start to force Norris off at the apex
dropping the McLaren driver from second to sixth place
A virtual safety car interrupted the race as Alpine's Jack Doohan got wrecked
It was a terrible weekend for the Australian
who had his sprint-qualifying session ruined by his own team and is now almost certain to be replaced at the next race by Franco Colapinto
Piastri made rather quick work of Antonelli
then got past Verstappen to take the lead with a clinically precise move on lap 14
It took Norris a little longer to deal with the reigning World Champion
four laps in which Norris lost a second a lap to Piastri before he slotted into second place
From there, the pair of McLarens disappeared off into the distance. Last time, I wrote about how close the entire grid has become under this latest set of rules
The race in Miami bucked that trend as the McLaren showed much faster race pace than anyone else
thanks in large part to much higher track temperatures
who is getting the most out of his Mercedes every time he straps in
Russell was more than half a minute behind the orange-and-black cars at the checkered flag
Piastri now leads Norris in the championship by 16 points

MIAMI (AP) — As hundreds of migrants crowded into the Krome Detention Center in Miami on the edge of the Florida Everglades
a palpable fear of an uprising set in among its staff
“There are 1700 people here at Krome!!!!,” one U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement employee texted a co-worker last month
adding that even though it felt unsafe to walk around the facility nobody was willing to speak out
Barely 11,000 migrants were encountered at the U.S.-Mexican border in March
their lowest level in at least a decade and down from 96,035 in December 2024
Krome is just one of five facilities that ICE directly runs — the others are in Buffalo
Arizona and two in Texas — and can house detainees for more than 16 hours
ICE had orders to round up migrants with few options on where to send them
The vast majority of bed space is leased from local prisons
jails or privately run facilities that have strict limits on how many detainees they are contractually obligated to accept
As its concrete cellblocks began filling up
federal workers started documenting the worsening conditions in weekly reports for the Department of Homeland Security’s leadership
They worked their way up the chain through DHS’ Office of Immigration & Detention Ombudsman
an independent watchdog established by Congress during the first Trump administration to blunt the fallout from a string of scandals about treatment at detention facilities
The office went through four ombudsmen in two months as Trump officials surged arrests with no apparent plan on where to send them
when the office’s 100 staffers — including a case manager at Krome — were placed on administrative leave in what officials described as an effort to remove roadblocks to enforcement
“Rather than supporting law enforcement efforts
they often function as internal adversaries that slow down operations,” DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said
“We are practically kidnapped,” Osiris Vázquez
who was detained while driving home from a construction job near Miami
said he shared for two weeks a small room with some 80 men
the fetid-smelling bathrooms were left unattended and food was restricted to peanut butter sandwiches
no natural light,” recalled Vázquez in an interview
where he hadn’t set foot in almost a decade
he had to be hospitalized twice for a respiratory infection he says he caught at Krome
three detainees have died while in ICE custody — two of them at Krome
died after complaining to his wife about overcrowding and freezing conditions
legally with his wife in August under a humanitarian program for people fleeing the country’s war with Russia
He was sent to Krome after an arrest in south Florida for domestic violence and immediately got sick with a chest cold
After being monitored for a week with high blood pressure
he was taken to a hospital for seizure-like vomiting and shaking
An ICE report said he appeared intoxicated and unresponsive at times
Chernyak’s widow said that before her husband’s detention he was a “strong
her husband struggled to communicate with guards about his deteriorating health
but they ignored him,” said Oksana Tarasiuk in an interview
didn’t comment on specific allegations of mistreatment but said it adjusts its operations as needed to uphold its duty to treat individuals with dignity and respect
“These allegations are not in keeping with ICE policies
practices and standards of care,” the agency said
“ICE takes its commitment to promoting safe
humane environments for those in our custody very seriously.”
Krome has transferred out a number of detainees and conditions have improved
But that could just be shifting problems elsewhere in the migration detention system
at the Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami
correctional officers last week had to deploy flash bang grenades
pepper spray paint balls and stun rounds to quell an uprising by detainees
two people familiar with the matter told the AP
The incident occurred as a group of some 40 detainees waited almost eight hours to be admitted into the facility as jail officers miscounted the number of individuals handed over by ICE
who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly
would not confirm details of the incident but said that at no time was the public at risk
“That has put a massive strain over our staff,” said Kenny X
the president of the union representing workers at FDC Miami
“We are doing the job of two agencies in one building.”
Trump’s administration has yet to reveal his plans for mass deportations even as he seeks to eliminate legal status for 1 million migrants previously granted humanitarian parole or some other form of temporary protection
The latest ICE data suggests so-called removal of migrants is actually below levels at the end of the Biden administration
That means detentions are likely to rise and
the need to house all the detainees will get more urgent
Spending on new facilities is a boon for federal contractors
whose stock prices have surged since Trump’s election
But finding workers willing to carry out Trump’s policy remains a major challenge
Only a handful of applicants showed up at a recent hiring fair in Miami organized by Akima Global Services
a $2 billion federal contractor that staffs several immigrant detention centers
“Many of these facilities have been chronically understaffed for years,” said Michelle Brané
an immigration attorney and the last ombudsman during the Biden administration
“These are not easy jobs and they aren’t pleasant places to work.”
The facility was set up as essentially the nation’s first migrant detention center in the 1970s to process the large number of boat refugees fleeing Haiti
almost no migrants were detained for more than a few days
the facility was wracked by harrowing accounts of guards sexually assaulting or coercing sexual favors from female prisoners
the facility appeared to have turned a corner
with ICE even inviting the media to tour a first-of-its-kind mental health facility
The facility housed 740 men and one woman on March 31
which reflects only the midnight count on the last day of the month
That’s up 31% from just before Trump took office
ICE refused to disclose Krome’s current capacity because of security concerns
the ombudsman’s office has received more than 2,000 inmate complaints
Brané said she worries that detainee deaths
which started to rise during the Biden administration as arrests surged
could spike without anyone on the ground to investigate complaints of mistreatment
everything was just frozen and people were told to go home,” said Brané
you’re taking away the oversight and you’re increasing the number of people you’re detaining
a grassroots coalition of immigration activists and far-left groups organized a demonstration on the highway leading to Krome’s entrance calling for the closure of the center
some holding pictures of migrants “kidnapped” by ICE and signs that read “American Gulag
American Shame” and “Immigrants Make America Great.”
Huber Argueta-Perez said he saw many of those same conditions during his detention at Krome last month
was detained March 10 after dropping off his two American daughters at school in Miami
He spent nine days sleeping on the concrete floor of a small
He said he got feverishly sick from the cold but was repeatedly denied a sweater and medicines
AP writers Michael Sisak in New York and Rebecca Santana in Washington contributed to this report

This isn't a straight-up, one-for-one comparison of the two races. That would be too soon, unfair and, quite frankly, foolish. The equivalent to sizing up Oscar Piastri vs

Inter Miami CF is waiving Julian Gressel, clearing the way for the midfielder to head to Minnesota United FC
Gressel has long been reported to be heading out of South Florida
After making 32 league and playoff appearances during last year's Supporters' Shield-winning campaign
he has yet to see the field in a competitive match in 2025
and clearly didn't fit into the plans of manager Javier Mascherano
who succeeded Gerardo "Tata" Martino after last season
Gressel, the 2017 MLS Rookie of the Year, is a two-time MLS Cup winner, first with Atlanta United FC in 2018, and later with the Columbus Crew in 2023
He also was part of Altanta United FC's U.S
as well as the Vancouver Whitecaps Canadian Championship sides in 2022 and 2023
Miami is waiving Gressel as a cost-saving measure in the hope that another team would pick up a portion of the player's salary
which includes a guaranteed compensation for 2025 of $1.09 million
According to MLS's roster rules for 2025: "If a player with a guaranteed contract is waived
any interested MLS club will have 48 hours from the notice of Waivers to claim the player by notifying the League of the intention to claim the player and the amount of the player's Salary Budget Charge they wish to assume
The player will be awarded based on a number of factors
Waiver Order and which club is willing to absorb a Salary Budget Charge that is meaningfully higher than other clubs and at least $15,000 higher than Senior Minimum Salary."
GiveMeSport was the first to report that Gressel would be heading to the Loons
In a possibly related move, sources also tell ESPN that the Loons are also contemplating placing midfielder Hassani Dotson on the season-ending injury list
Dotson underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee in late March
Norris got a great start and was challenging Verstappen into the first couple of corners. But he got squeezed, ran wide and that allowed Piastri through. From there, the Australian picked off Antonelli and then Verstappen for the lead, built a huge gap and was imperious as he grabbed his third straight Grand Prix win
Norris dropped to sixth after that first lap moment
but quickly made his way back up through the field
He had to work hard to get past Verstappen
and by then his team mate had too big an advantage for Norris to overhaul
as they built the field by over half a minute
READ MORE: Norris concedes he 'paid the price' as he reflects on Lap 1 battle with Verstappen in Miami
"It's a great feeling to have won the race today
Max [Verstappen] put up a fight at the start and frustratingly I paid the price but that's just the way it can be in racing
I'll take all these positives and get my head down at the factory to focus on Imola in two weeks' time.”
“Today was an exceptional result for McLaren at the end of a remarkable weekend
but was powerless to hold the faster McLarens at bay
All of that contrived to drop him behind his team mate
Russell benefitting from a cheap stop after starting on the hard tyre
and managed to stay in front of the Dutchman to pick up yet another podium
"Ultimately the McLarens had a decent advantage over the rest of the field so congratulations to them
and we’re looking forward to the upcoming triple header in Europe
and it was nice to take my first Sprint pole position
I’m still gaining experience in terms of my race management
and I am sure that will continue to get better as the season progresses
I am now excited for the next race at Imola and my first ever home Grand Prix
I am sure the atmosphere and support will be incredible
so I am very much looking forward to the weekend there."
"Kimi meanwhile showed his talent this weekend but had a race where he will take away some good learnings
That is completely normal for a rookie driver
The race management will come as he continues to build his experience and we’re now looking forward to the upcoming triple-header in Europe
The next race will mark Kimi’s first ever home Grand Prix at Imola and I am sure he will be looking forward to that."
"Whilst George benefited from the Virtual Safety Car
Kimi lost out having stopped just before it came out
We had to box him to protect from Albon in the Williams who had the chance to deploy the undercut
Some traffic in the pit lane cost him and ultimately his pace on the Hard tyre consigned him to P6
It has still been another good weekend for Kimi though as he continues his development
"McLaren were the class of the field once again today and we are working hard to close that gap
we leave Miami pleased we have added more points to our tally compared to Red Bull and Ferrari
but knowing we have got work to do if we are to challenge at the very front each weekend
Hopefully we can make some gains in this area starting in Imola in two weeks’ time."
but found himself under pressure from Piastri
He kept pushing the Australian wide into Turn 1
but in the end out-braked himself and let the McLaren past

but got jumped by Russell in the pits courtesy of a VSC
he picked up a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane
and managed to put his foot down on the last few laps to pull a five-second gap to Hadjar behind to make sure he held on to the last point
“Yesterday I said that I would try my very best and I gave it everything that I could
but it ended up being a struggle out there
but in the end it was impossible to keep them behind
but of course that is part of racing and overall the pace wasn’t really there
We had nothing to lose so I was just trying to have a bit of fun on the track and it was cool to be out there racing
The race was unfortunately quite difficult for us in general and we ultimately lacked pace and struggled with the breaks
Every time that I tried to get close or push a bit more
It was really down to tyre management today and the track had quite high degradation
which is not our strong suit at the moment
We need a bit more performance to make sure we are more competitive
“It was unnecessary for me to be in that position with the time penalty and it made things a lot more difficult in the race for me and my old teammate certainly did nothing to make my life easier in those last few laps
I was pushing a lot and he kept coming back
It was tough to keep the five second gap but I had to do what I had to do and I maximised the pace
I am happy I was able to score points but again
it wasn’t just me and it is something we have to look at
it is tough to get the car in the place we want
but we will work towards it and make up for it in the future
I am feeling more confident in the car as the weeks go by and we will unlock it."
"We gave it everything today but well done to McLaren
they were in a different league so P4 and a double points finish is as good as we could get from an often chaotic Miami GP
Max put up a staunch defence of his lead and position in the opening stint
but the VSC gave others the opportunity to capitalise on Max’s earlier stop and ultimately cost him a podium finish
P10 for Yuki who did well to hold onto his point in the end
The race showed that we still have a lot of work to do on the car to find that ultimate race pace
We’ll take our learnings back to Milton Keynes and come back with everything we have for our 400th race in Imola in a couple of weeks time."
with their drivers swapping positions multiple times throughout the Grand Prix
and managed to pull off a good overtake on Antonelli to climb to fifth
That matched his best result of the season
and made up for the P4 he lost in yesterday’s Sprint
Sainz also scored after surviving some last-lap contact with Hamilton
"I’m glad I could reset and go again after yesterday
The car was quick and today was all about pure pace
I had a good rhythm all race and I’m very happy with the result
when you look at where we were 12 months ago
This shows all the progress we’ve made at Grove and now we’ve shown the world that we can race at the top
This won’t happen every race and we’ll definitely have to keep fighting
The operational misunderstanding of yesterday put us on the back-foot from the beginning as I had to start the race on a used compound
Avoiding Lando in Lap 1 when he rejoined the track unfortunately resulted in contact with Alex
which damaged my floor quite badly for the rest of the race
There was some miscommunication between our two sides of the garage that we will analyse internally
with the damage I had it was inevitable that I would end up losing positions
I did everything I could to hold on and stick with the cars ahead
today we had very good pace and the balance of the car is the best it’s felt since the start of the season
so we’ll try to take the positives and review everything as a team."
but I’m really pleased for the team with the result today
Given the setbacks we had yesterday morning
to come back fighting with both cars in the top ten in Qualifying
and to finish with both cars in the points is incredibly rewarding
It’s a long season and teams will bring updates so it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out over the next few races
but to score from five of the first six races is a different world to where we’ve been previously
I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the world class drivers we have
Alex and Carlos are really giving their all to this team and we are on a good pathway moving forwards."
Ferrari appeared to get themselves into a pickle in Miami
Hamilton climbed up through the field and had a cheap pit stop under the VSC
then found himself right on his team mate’s tail on different strategies
given he was on the faster mediums at the point - but the team only allowed it after three laps
leading to Leclerc asking to be let through
The team again allowed it but again after apparent delay
we’ve made some solid steps forward this weekend
and there are definitely learnings to take moving forward
but considering where we started it was a decent recovery
I’m starting to feel more at one with the car
and I’m as motivated as ever to be fighting at the front
but everyone is working incredibly hard behind the scenes and we’re hopeful of making progress in the coming races
We’ll just keep pushing and stay focused on the work ahead."
Lawson was tagged into a spin in the first corner by Doohan
which dropped the Kiwi racer to last and also damaged his floor
but ultimately retired thanks to that car damage
knowing Tsunoda ahead had a time penalty coming
He pushed and pushed late on to get within five seconds of the Red Bull
winding up losing out by just over a tenth of a second
"I’m not really happy with my driving today as I feel like I made some mistakes here and there
We did several laps on hard tyres after the pit stop and overall it was an enjoyable race as it was a Qualifying battle with Yuki
I knew I was still within the five second gap during the last lap as I had the gap difference live
We missed a point by just one-tenth and a half
I’m feeling confident heading to Imola next; I know the track well and I also won there in F2.”
A big gap opened up into turn one so I went in and was following whoever was in front of me and then felt a hit from the side
We took some big damage there and was holding out for some rain
It's a shame because the team have done a great job this weekend and the car has been fast
We'll reset ahead of the triple header
keep looking forwards and keep improving things."
It started with the fantastic reaction from the fans to our special livery
and it continued on track with a fast paced rollercoaster for Isack and Liam
then an incredible fight from P14 to P7 for Liam in the Sprint race
before a penalty stripped him of his points
Isack just missed the cut to Q3 by two hundredths of a second
before missing the final point today by just 0.1s to Yuki after a very strong race
Liam’s race however was ruined following a collision on lap 1
The good news is that our car and our drivers showed strong pace again this weekend even if the points didn’t come
We will keep learning and pushing as hard as we can and we can’t wait to back on track in Imola in a couple of weeks
Ocon could not convert his P9 grid slot into points in Miami
as he lost out to a recovering Hamilton midway through the race
parking up early on with what sounded like a PU problem
That was his first retirement of the season
to cap a difficult weekend for the rookie which saw him qualify in P20 twice
“It was a solid race on our side but unfortunately
we lacked a bit of pace to be fighting with the quicker guys in front
We didn’t get very lucky as we didn’t pit under VSC
had a couple of fights but they always ended the same way
I think overall it’s been a strong weekend from the team and we need to keep that going once we find a bit more performance in the car
there are some good learnings from this weekend
and some good expectations for the upcoming races
“It was going okay but I spent a good chunk of time in a DRS train
which obviously wasn’t ideal for the tyres
I think we had some pace but not enough to be in the points
and it’s unfortunate that we weren’t able to finish the race
I take away the positive that our pace and performance in the Sprint was competitive
we tried to go forwards as much as possible but we had a PU failure
Esteban’s first stint was okay – he was fighting against Hamilton pretty well and held him back for as long as he did
so he drove well – but we didn’t get our pit stop timing correct so we got undercut by Hadjar
That ruined it as in the second stint we couldn’t overtake him
we could’ve had P10 and that’s the really disappointing thing
sometimes we really nailed it; like in Q2 with Esteban
There’s plenty of things that we need to understand
today’s race pace and decision making because the pit stop didn’t work
so we need to learn as a team and then put it right in Imola.”
as he made contact with Lawson in Turn 1 on the opening lap
and he could not limp back to the pits – parking up near an escape road and bringing out a VSC
Gasly started from the pit lane after making some set-up changes overnight
but he could only recover to P13 at the flag
At least we are leaving Miami with one point following the Sprint Race yesterday
We knew that today’s race was going to be tricky after having had a couple of issues on the car which we tried to fix for today
I suppose we would have liked the rain to come during the race to give us a chance to fight but it did not come in the end
We need to do some analysis on the performance we had here as we have been faster in previous races
We have work to do between now and the next race in Imola.”
“It was a tough end to the weekend for my side of the garage
We were starting from the middle of the pack which always creates a challenge coming into the first few corners
We were squeezed going into Turn 1 and with nowhere to go we had contact with [Liam] Lawson
The damage was too much to make it back to the pitlane safely and we ultimately had to retire the car
especially in managing the difficult weather conditions
and I have felt comfortable in the car across the weekend
Our focus now shifts toward the next few races
We have the week ahead to reset and work to prepare for the upcoming triple-header as we head into the start of the European season.”
“We leave Miami disappointed where ultimately
we lacked performance to be competitive enough to fight for points
Although we did not come away from Miami empty-handed
Pierre was not happy with how the car felt in Qualifying and given his starting position we opted to make changes to his car and start from the pitlane
so in a conventional dry race we tried to make progress and pitted Pierre under the second VSC
Although we made up several positions ultimately it was only good enough for 13th
Jack’s race unfortunately ended on the first lap after contact with Lawson at Turn 1
We have some time now between races to understand where we can improve and come back with some more performance for the European triple-header starting in Imola.”
Hulkenberg started on the hard tyre and was the last man to pit
but going long did not lead to the hoped for Safety Car
He dropped down the order when he swapped to the mediums
Bortoleto did not – he was radioing to say his power unit was suffering issues when he was called to the pits to retire
having to park up off the track instead for his second DNF of the season
“It’s been a pretty clean race today and felt like one of the better ones this year
I managed to stay out of trouble at Turn One
In contrast to most of the other cars I was on a reverse strategy
starting with hard tyres to deliver a long first stint
We didn't take the opportunity of the first Virtual Safety Car to make a pit stop
which is something we need to review with the team
it feels like we’ve taken another step forward this weekend
With a bit more performance and improved car balance
we believe we can get closer to fighting for points
we’re now looking forward to starting the European part of the season.”
"It was a decent race up to the point we had to retire
and I felt we could’ve held that position to the end
The pace was what we expected—we were a bit behind Haas and RB but still in the mix
I started losing power on the straights in
and eventually the car just shut down completely
it looks like a fuel system issue that affected us
but I haven’t had time to analyse it with the team yet
especially as DNFs have been rare in my career
We can still take quite a few positive from the weekend—our single-lap performance and the pace we had before the issue are points on which we can build
We’ll look into everything we experienced this weekend
and come back stronger for the next one."
"Today’s race saw both our drivers get off the line well and deliver strong first stints
we had to retire Gabriel due to a technical issue—potentially related to the fuel system—though we’ll know more once we’ve had a proper look at the car
we may have benefited from boxing under the Virtual Safety Car
and that’s something we’ll need to analyse carefully
the team delivered two very clean pit stops—2.2 and 2.5 seconds—which is a real credit to the crew
and we’ll take the lessons forward as we prepare for the European leg of the season."
It was not to be for Aston Martin after a strong start to the weekend
Alonso’s day made worse by a spin in the early stages of the race as he lost the rear by himself
starting Alonso on the hard and Stroll the medium but to no avail
We didn't have the pace the whole weekend
We faced similar challenges today that we've had all season and couldn't capitalise on any chaos ahead of us
We need to get better and hopefully in Imola take a step forward."
"Difficult race for us today and very tricky conditions
We just simply lack pace - we've been slow all season so far and today wasn't any exception
With an uneventful race and no opportunities
it just shows how we're not competitive and need to look at improving the car in all areas."
"Today's results in the Miami Grand Prix are a reminder that we are simply lacking car performance
There were very few opportunities to progress from our starting positions and the race turned out to be a comfortable one-stop race for the entire field
It was important that we scored four points with Lance yesterday in the Sprint
but under normal dry conditions we don't have a car capable of competing for points right now
We need to continue to analyse where we can improve and work hard to be more competitive in Imola."
“It was a very straightforward race as far as the tyres were concerned
From the little data gathered over the weekend it had become clear that
despite bringing a trio of compounds one step softer than last year’s in order to create more strategy choices
it would probably still be a one-stop race and so it proved to be
There was very limited degradation on the C3 and the C4
in fact on the latter it was even less than expected
That explains why drivers who started on the Medium were able to extend their first stint to the halfway point of the race or even further
especially as the Virtual Safety Car made it easier for the leaders to switch to the Hard compound
"The low tyre degradation also contributed to the many battles
especially early on when drivers were able to push as hard as they wanted
It was a different scenario to the one we witnessed in Suzuka for example
The track characteristics here are very different
and it also demonstrates how difficult it is to have everything in place to produce the great show that the fans deserve to see.”
MIAMI LOWDOWN: All the key moments as McLaren and Antonelli shine
STRATEGY GUIDE: What are the tactical options for the Miami Grand Prix
Stella ‘surprised’ by McLaren advantage after 1-2 in Miami as he hails particular area of engineering 'excellence'
Max Verstappen admitted that his Miami Grand Prix was “a bit of a struggle” after slipping backwards from pole position to a final result of P4
with the Red Bull man conceding that he lacked paced in comparison to his rivals on a dominant day for McLaren
Having initially held the lead off the line
Verstappen faced a challenge from Lando Norris in Lap 1 before the Briton went wide
allowing Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri through in the process
the Australian then chased down Verstappen and eventually found a way past into P1
with a resurgent Norris soon following through to drop the World Champion down to third
A Virtual Safety Car period later in the race saw George Russell leapfrog Verstappen for third via a well-timed pit stop for the Mercedes driver and
while Verstappen tried to close in during the latter stages of the race
Asked after the race if he could take any solace from doing some damage limitation – given the commanding pace displayed by the McLaren cars – Verstappen responded: “Yeah
I mean I had nothing to lose so I just tried to have a bit of fun out there as well at the same time
AS IT HAPPENED: Follow all the action from the Miami GP as Piastri wins in dominant McLaren 1-2
“I said yesterday that I would try to do my very best and I think we did that today
but unfortunately [we] just didn’t have the pace
Verstappen admitted that he did not have the pace to keep up with the McLarens
so it was just quite a bit of a struggle out there
and then of course we got a bit unlucky with the VSC as well
Pushed on whether he was at all surprised by the significant gap to McLaren – with Piastri being a whopping 39 seconds up the road from Verstappen at the finish line – Verstappen suggested that the advantage can ebb and flow depending on the circuit

with Piastri securing his fourth victory of the season by 4.6 seconds ahead of Norris
attempted to pass Verstappen for the lead in the opening corner of the race but found himself hung out to dry on the outside of Turn 2 and dropped to fifth as Piastri moved up to third from fourth on the grid
Piastri passed Andrea Kimi Antonelli for second place on Lap 4
and Norris recovered to third place by Lap 9
Verstappen provided a defensive masterclass

Piastri said in a postrace interview he knew to avoid Verstappen at Turn 1
"I won the race that I really wanted to after a tricky day on Saturday," Piastri said
"To come away with a win is an impressive result
I was aware enough to avoid Max in Turn 1 and I knew I had a pace advantage
I was struggling on the hard tyres but I had built a gap
"Two years ago at Miami we were the slowest team
Now to have won the Grand Prix by over 35 seconds to third is an unbelievable result."
Norris said Verstappen put up a good fight as always: "I paid the price

- How Lego built life-size F1 cars for Miami GP driver parade
play400,000 bricks at 20 km/h - Meet Miami's amazing LEGO cars (1:40)Laurence Edmondson travelled to Prague
Czechia to see the Miami Grand Prix's amazing LEGO cars being built
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- It sounds like a 10-year-old's wildest dream: Take nearly 400,000 Lego bricks and build a life-size Formula 1 car capable of completing a lap of the Miami Grand Prix circuit
The ambitious idea came about last year as the Danish company's senior management was visiting its model production factory in Kladno
Tasked with dreaming up ideas to promote Lego's recently signed partnership with F1
the leadership team had its "what if?" moment
"We were talking and we were brainstorming together and saying
'What could we do with F1 that would be completely epic and beyond anything we've done before?'" Julia Goldin
chief product and marketing officer of the Lego Group
what about full-size cars and what about drivable cars?' So it took a while because
Senior designer Jonathan Jurion and engineering manager specialist Martin Šmida were given the task of making the vision a reality
The goal: accurately reproduce life-size versions of the latest range of Speed Champions Lego F1 cars that not only look faithful to the product on sale in shops but are also capable of completing a full 3.3-mile lap of the Miami International Autodrome during F1's traditional prerace drivers' parade
Lego has a long history of building accurate life-size models of various products for its parks
only one of its full-size cars had been drivable
even when held together with special construction glue
but also because a drivable car would require a steel-frame chassis
hydraulic brakes and a power steering system
And then there was another challenge presented by the Miami project: Only one car would be built per team
meaning each model would have to be big enough to accommodate two F1 drivers
Speaking to ESPN in Kladno earlier this year
Jurion held one of the Speed Champions models in the palm of his hand as he explained the process of scaling the 1/30th toy car up to a life-size construction
trying to remodel it so it fits two minifigures," he said
"Obviously a minifigure is not the same proportions as a human
"We then take that design and try to upscale it
so [the fully built life-size car] is a 30-times upscale of the original model you can buy in shops
design each part and try to make it look as faithful to that as possible."
Each life-size F1 car that Lego built for all 10 teams for the Miami drivers' parade is made up of 400,000 bricks. Hector Vivas/Getty ImageIn order to keep the build to the correct proportions while accommodating two drivers
the cockpit area was elongated so that one driver could sit between the legs of his teammate
(Who gets to sit up front in each car will be an interesting insight into the dynamics between teammates up and down the grid.)
"So we actually got inspired by an airplane design for two people
so they are sitting in tandem one behind the other," Jurion said
but we think that we tried to do the biggest space possible for them to be inside."
who was in charge of the construction of the car's mechanical underpinnings
is proud of an additional feature to make the ride slightly more comfortable for the driver at the controls
and because we don't know if the driver is smaller or taller
"These pedals have the possibility to move 10 centimeters back and 10 centimeters forward."
there was no instruction manual when the project first started
Jurion used special software to map out the assembly of the bricks in layers to create the right shapes to mimic F1 body parts while incorporating specific team sponsor names in Lego form
"We build bricks in the software as you would build bricks at home
gluing the bricks until we have these wonderful cars
on loan from the teams and F1 tire supplier Pirelli
are the only visible parts of the construction not made from genuine Lego bricks
Even the steering wheel has an outer casing assembled from Lego
complete with switches and dials to look like the real thing
The 400,000 bricks alone weigh 1,000 kilograms
including the chassis supporting the structure
that adds up to 1,500kg -- or just under two times the weight of a real F1 car
Šmida's primary responsibility was to make sure the finished cars were up to the task of completing the lap under their own power
The chassis not only had to be strong enough to support a ton of bricks (quite literally) but also house an electric motor and drivetrain capable of powering the whole construction to a maximum speed of just under 13 mph -- a number roughly in line with the speed of the flatbed truck used for standard driver parades at other circuits
the project required 3,000 hours of development time and a further 19,000 hours of assembly time to build all 10 cars
the models will go on a worldwide tour so both Lego and F1 fans can marvel at them
Perhaps the hardest task of all for Goldin and her leadership team is to think of a way to up the game for Lego's next F1 project
"That's the question that everybody is asking," Goldin said
one of the things that we pride ourselves on is to never let our imagination be in any way constrained by what is considered possible
It's always: Let's make the impossible possible
And I'm confident that the creativity of our teams will bring another

Lando Norris said Max Verstappen was "not racing very smart" at the Miami Grand Prix and suggested the reigning world champion destroyed his own race

They narrowly avoided colliding at one point
Oscar Piastri builds his lead over his teammate after an impressive fourth win of the season..
Norris had also run wide at the start while trying to pass Verstappen, a moment which allowed eventual race winner Oscar Piastri through
Norris later said when racing Verstappen it is either "crash or don't pass."
he said the Red Bull driver's aggressive approach to their battle was counterproductive
"It was fine," he said when asked about it
Piastri had managed to overtake Verstappen a few laps earlier
although he did not get a move done immediately
Norris closed the gap on Piastri after getting past Verstappen but never got close enough to challenge for the win
keeping Norris behind or passing Verstappen
Piastri said: "Both very different challenges
our two cars were clearly the best in the field by some margin
being his teammate now for a couple of years
it's clearly going to be a strong fight between Lando and I
Red Bull principal Christian Horner said the way Verstappen raced was "brave."
"I was actually surprised that Max was able to hold them back for circa 14 laps or 13
I thought it was a very brave display," he said
that may be a hurt to our own race because you're fighting hard
I thought he did an outstanding job to keep Oscar behind as long as he did and then Lando."
Alex Albon was left delighted with Williams' performance in Miami as a fifth-placed finish saw him bank more valuable points
while team mate Carlos Sainz was left frustrated despite his P9 result
With the Williams pair starting sixth and seventh
the team knew points were on the cards – but when their drivers clashed on the opening lap
In the end the car had more than enough pace to hold its own in the middle of the top 10
with Albon looking particularly quick after he got over some mechanical issues in the first stint
we were struggling with engine temperatures so [it] was just really important to get past Carlos and then we caught up the Mercs,” Albon said about the early stage of the race
I would even argue George [Russell] got a little lucky with the VSC
The two Williams drivers fought hard in Miami with Albon coming out on top
also just amazing to be able to see the podium – I had George and Max [Verstappen] in my vision
in front of me the whole race without a Safety Car
so yeah that is just testament to the progress we are making at Williams
Albon later even went so far as to joke that he’d never seen Verstappen from start to finish in a race “even in my Red Bull days.”
With Williams the only midfield team to score in Miami, there could have been much more to enjoy without the disappointment of the Sprint, when Albon finished fourth to earn five points. However, he picked up a time penalty for driving too slowly under the Safety Car
which dropped him down the order and out of the points
the Thai driver was keen to emphasize how well the car had performed across the entire weekend in Miami
“The car has been feeling quick all weekend
from the very first lap we drove around the track in FP1 I knew it would be a good weekend," he said
"It’s not going to be like this every weekend
It’s why yesterday [The Sprint] was so disappointing – because I thought we might not have a moment again to score points like that."
While Sainz didn’t quite have the same pace as Albon in the Grand Prix
after the duo swapped positions a handful of times in the early stages
he still came home ninth to bag a points finish of his own
But there were times where more could have been possible as the Spaniard was right on the tail of the two Ferraris and even made contact battling Lewis Hamilton on the final lap
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Albon and Sainz both complete overtaking moves on the same lap
but I was starting on a four-lap used tyre
when the others were on new tyres and I knew this was going to make me slower on the first stint and vulnerable,” he explained
"On top of that I picked up damage in Turn 3 with Alex at the start with slight contact
so I just made my first stint obviously very difficult with the used tyre and the damaged car
“Still tried to hold on for my life with faster cars around me
That gave a much shorter pit stop time to all the cars that stopped three laps later with the VSC
I was vulnerable again… That’s why I’m frustrated and why today I think we should have scored bigger points.”
Sainz was pleased to be fighting with the Ferrari and Mercedes cars on merit – even if he wound up finishing behind those two teams by the end
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Hamilton and Sainz bang wheels in last lap attack from the Spaniard on the Ferrari
He added: “Very happy and proud as a team to be fighting the top four cars
as also the Mercedes I felt like today we were almost quicker than them
There will be tracks where we might have this opportunity again and I want to be the first driver to maximise it
I think he [Hamilton] reacted a bit to my move
it caught him a bit by surprise and he started moving left during braking which if you apply the rulebook to the letter you cannot do that as that is moving under braking
everyone is going to be a bit on the limit.”

The Miami stewards did look at the last lap incident between Sainz and Hamilton but deemed no further action to be the result with both drivers taking a share of the blame – Hamilton for braking earlier and Sainz for not pulling out of the move when he hadn’t earned the right to the corner
Verstappen labels Miami Grand Prix ‘a struggle’ after slipping back to P4 as he reflects on gap to McLaren
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella was left smiling at the end of a dominant performance by his team
with Oscar Piastri winning the Miami Grand Prix from Lando Norris
With the team having already bagged a 1-2 in Saturday's Sprint
the pace the papaya squad displayed in the Grand Prix itself had the paddock talking
Piastri and Norris finished relatively close together with 4.6 seconds between the two team mates
but third-placed George Russell was over 33 seconds behind Norris
while Max Verstappen’s Red Bull – that had started on pole – was nearly 40 seconds adrift at the flag
That gap was by far the most dominant performance of the season from any team
and was gained after both Piastri and Norris had to climb back through the field in the early stages
“I'm a little surprised that the gap we had today is as big as we saw,” Stella said after Sunday's Grand Prix
“I thought that we could have had an advantage from a tyre management point of view but I didn't think that the tyre management would lead to this level of gap throughout the race
“One of the matters that still in Formula 1 looks like it's a little bit of a black art
I would say especially when it's hot there's another characteristic which I think works very well with our car
you can see that is relatively closed from a bodywork point of view because there's been also great engineering going into the cooling system
I think in these conditions we see the excellence of the engineering at McLaren has reached a point where it can make a difference to this kind of extent.”
During the early stages of the Miami Grand Prix eventual winner Piastri had to overtake Kimi Antonelli – which he did with relative ease – and Max Verstappen to climb into the lead
Norris had to pass even more cars to get to second after dropping to sixth on the opening lap
with the Briton's bold attempt to get past polesitter Verstappen at the start failing to give him the reward he was after
The 25-year-old conceded post race that he "paid the price" for the move and
McLaren's electric pace could have allowed him to lift at that moment and fight back later from a higher position
McLaren recorded a 1-2 in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix
Stella explained: “Let's say that considering the situation [on Lap 1]
it could have been better for Lando to just lift and make sure that he could keep the second position because the car
we see was very fast and he would certainly have passed Max like Oscar and
you have to approach with the mindset of reviewing where the opportunities lie
and I think in this case Lando could have been a little bit more patient
"But I quite like to see Lando aggressive
going for overtaking the lead of the race and sometimes it's just the matter of a fraction of a second
In this situation the stewards elected that there was no need to intervene but definitely the manoeuvre was quite at the limit.”
with Verstappen forcing both Piastri and then Norris to try and go around his outside into Turn 1
Stella did admit that Norris lost time in his fight – while Piastri made it past the Dutchman cleanly
Norris needed several goes and even had to give the place back at one point after overtaking off the track
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Norris comes out on top after epic battle with Verstappen for P2
This was the crucial period of the race where Piastri in free air was able to disappear up the road – leaving Norris too much to do once he did get into second place
the lap time or race time was lost because he needed to give back the position,” elaborated Stella
"It was fair to give back the position because when overtaking we exceeded the track limits so there's a few things that we need to improve
“Certainly there are things to improve even from Oscar's side
like if you look back at qualifying I think Oscar lost a little bit of rhythm from Q2 to Q3 so even in that case we have some opportunities
I think both drivers are very open to this kind of review

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla -- George Russell kept his podium finish at the Miami Grand Prix after a post-race Red Bull protest was thrown out by the stewards
Red Bull had claimed Russell broke yellow flag rules midway through the contest
On Lap 33, shortly after Gabriele Bortoleto's Sauber had stopped on track due to engine trouble
a radio message from Max Verstappen was played saying: "Check if George lifted
Drivers are required to slow their speed in cautionary periods
Verstappen ended up finishing behind Russell - in the closing stages
a message from race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase encouraged the four-time world champion to stay within five seconds of the Mercedes driver
In a visit to the stewards after the finish Red Bull attempted to argue that while Russell might have lifted off the throttle
he had not done so enough to alter his speed sufficiently and within the requirements of the rules
The stewards disagreed with their assessment
Their verdict read: "It was evident from the onboard footage as well as from telemetry that Car 63 lifted the throttle when passing the yellow flag zone
25 percent and this resulted in a reduction of torque of approx
30 percent." The verdict meant the order was unchanged
Oscar Piastri extended his lead at the top of the Formula 1 standings after leading home a dominant McLaren 1-2 in the Miami Grand Prix
which came after a titanic battle for the lead with Max Verstappen
The Dutchman led from pole having gone wheel-to-wheel with fellow front row starter Lando Norris through the opening turns
with the McLaren driver running off track and losing several spots
It fell to Piastri to launch a challenge and over the opening 14 laps he made several attempts to pass the reigning World Champion
eventually prevailing as Verstappen ran deep at Turn 1 after a robust defence
Norris also made his way through after several of his own attempts
and with the forecasted rain not materialising
Piastri managed the gap to claim a hat-trick of wins on the bounce

Williams duo keen to 'play with strategies' as they target strong result in Miami after impressive Qualifying
Red Bull have had their protest of George Russell rejected by the Stewards following the Miami Grand Prix
resulting in the Mercedes driver keeping his podium finish ahead of fourth-placed Max Verstappen
The Milton Keynes outfit submitted a protest earlier alleging that Russell had failed to slow under yellow flags
which if successful could have led to a penalty that would have promoted the Dutchman to P3 as he crossed the line 2.3s behind the Mercedes
When Ollie Bearman's Haas suffered a likely engine failure and became stranded on track
Russell elected to pit for fresh tyres under the beneficial conditions brought about by the Virtual Safety Car
and he ultimately returned to the track ahead of Verstappen in third
when Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto pulled off the road with power unit problems
another Virtual Safety Car was deployed with Verstappen – still behind Russell – asking his team to "check if George lifted
Russell narrowly finished ahead of Verstappen in Miami
Red Bull subsequently launched a protest into the Briton
claiming he failed to slow under yellow flags
after the Stewards met with representatives from both teams
they concluded that the matter should be rejected
told media prior to the outcome confirmation: "We felt that Russell has done something that is in breach of the regs as they are written
so that's why we put a protest in today
The regulations say there should be a reduction in speed
and that is why Max flagged it immediately from what he saw within the cockpit."
2025 Miami Grand Prix: Russell emerges from the pits ahead of Verstappen to take P3
The document explaining the Stewards’ decision outlined that Red Bull accepted Russell did lift the throttle
but believed this did not slow him down enough and therefore went against the regulations
It added that there is no specific wording around whether reducing speed in a yellow flag zone means the "absolute speed" or "the speed relative to the regular racing speed" in that specific part of the track
They concluded that Car 63 was "considerably slower than the regular racing speed" when the yellow flag was shown
rejecting the protest and labelling it as "not founded"
The outcome means that Verstappen stays in P4 for the Miami Grand Prix and is just six points ahead of Russell in the Drivers' Standings.
